M
udhoney have been making music for over two decades, after forming in Seattle in 1988. During that time they have recorded nine studio albums with the latest, Vanishing Point, released this April. Although not gaining the same level of success, their early music carved the way for the grunge bands of the 90s such as Nirvana and Pearl Jam. mudhoneyonline.com
THE FRESH AND ONLYS
After forming in 2006, New York City’s indie-rockers The Virgins soon found themselves playing alongside the likes of Patti Smith, Sonic Youth and Lou Reed. Now signed to The Strokes’ Julian Casablancas’ label Cult Records, the band released second studio album Strike Gently earlier this year, full of smooth, disco tinged hits. returnfromthevoid.com

17th June | The Haunt Hailing from San Francisco, The Fresh and Onlys mirror the sound of Californian summers in their mix of jangly psychedelic surf guitars, with just a hint of romantic gloominess. Despite being one of many bands to emerge from the SF’s garage rock scene, they continue to be one of the best – catch them while you can at this rare Brighton appearance. thefreshandonlys.blogspot.com
Thanks to those Country Life butter adverts, 2009 saw John Lydon self-finance the reform of PiL , playing together live for the first time in 17 years. This has since led to their first album in 20 years, This is PiL, which was released last year to huge critical acclaim. 2013 is now set to be another unique year in PiL’s history with a huge worldwide tour, stopping by Brighton in June. pilofficial.com

LIVE PREVIEWS FRIENDS 16th July | Coalition, Brighton Brooklyn’s Friends were last in Brighton as part of 2012’s Great Escape Festival line-up, filling venues and generating queues outside to match. They make songs for dancing, with a tasty mix of bass-y disco, indie R&B and the unmistakable sass of finger-clicking 60s girlgroups, brought on by frontwoman Samantha Urbani. afriendszone.com
TWO GALLANTS 20th July | Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar, Brighton Folk-rock duo Two Gallants have been playing together as a band for over ten years since 2002, having grown up together in San Francisco. Through the years the pair have evolved their sound perfectly in synch; creating songs that alternate between the loud and the quiet, bursting with an eloquent honesty which is often reminiscent of southern folk. twogallants.com
THE BLACK ANGELS 25th June | The Haunt, Brighton The Black Angels much anticipated new release Indigo Meadow has the band taking a heavier approach than usual. The opening track sets the tone for the album; vintage fuzz, droning baselines, waves of disharmonic organ and 60 surf riffs, and although a different direction it still stays true to their haunted psychedelic sounds. Coming from the ‘Live music capital of the world’ Austin, Texas, seeing The Black Angels live is always a captivatingly mind expanding experience not to be missed, and we’re sure their appearance this June at the Haunt will be one of the best shows in Brighton this year. theblackangels.com

DVD RELEASES MAMA Released 17th June
T
his supernatural thriller is full of chills and perfectly-timed scares to have you jumping out of your seat. Two girls are discovered abandoned in a forest cabin following the death of both of their parents, surviving alone in the woods for five years. After they become fostered by their uncle and his girlfriend (Jessica Chastain) it soon becomes clear that they may not have been quite so alone, as a shadowy figure known as Mama begins to make her presence known to anyone standing between her and the girls.
CLOUD ATLAS
WRECK-IT RALPH
Released 1st July
Released 3rd June
Cloud Atlas weaves together six stories spanning across the past, present and future. Most impressive perhaps is the film’s costume and make-up effects which turns each of the lead actors (including Tom Hanks and Halle Berry) into several different characters, each unrecognisable from the next.
Game villain Ralph, voiced by John C. Reilly, thinks a hero role might fit him better and longs to be seen in a new light. Many of the film’s gamer references seem more for the adults who would remember the days of arcades, so you won’t be complaining about taking a few hours out of your day to watch with the kids.

Sussex Nightstop is a community project responding to local youth homelessness. The project recruits, trains and supervises people from within the local community who have a spare room. Through its team of volunteer hosts the project provides accommodation across Brighton and Hove and in West Sussex within family homes. The project has been running in Brighton since winter 2010 and has provided just under 300 nights of accommodation to young people aged between 16 and 25. Some young people stay for just a few nights whilst other require a few weeks of stable accommodation before they are ready to move on to longer term accommodation. All young people referred on to the scheme are risk assessed and have a professional Housing, Youth or Social worker coordinating their placement. *Tony was living with his father. After an argument, his father asked him to leave home. Tony was 17 and at college with real plans for his future. He was placed with Nightstop until a place in longer term supported accommodation was found for him. The host commented that “it was obvious that Tony just needed to get settled so that he could get on with his studies, complete his exams and focus on his future which was to become an accountant.” *not his real name. We are currently looking for hosts to join our team, hosts receive in depth skills and knowledge based training and 24 hour support. Expenses are paid to hosts on the shorter placements and a rental payment and expenses are paid to hosts that sign up to longer term placements. ‘as a family we get so much from knowing we are making a difference to someone’ ‘It’s a pleasure to get to know these young people and feel you are learning from them’ ‘’having a young person stay is never quite like you imagined….its surprisingly enjoyable’ To find out more please check out our website www.sussexnightstop.org.uk or contact us on 07887492927

CHRISTMAS IN JULY
S
ummer might be a bummer – often in the UK anyway – but at least it’s warmer than winter. And we can hope at least for a few hot days, lazing about on the beach, making the most of the seaside heat... but whilst most people are grabbing every minute of the sun and thinking mostly about bikinis and pedicures, we’re knee deep in snow scenes, people dressed as elves and Christmas crackers. Working for an events company is like being stuck in some kind of strange holodeck. Or a tear in the space/ time continuum. Because whilst everyone is enjoying a particular season, we’re working two seasons ahead. Right now everyone is hoping for a bit of sun and looking forward to hitting the beach. In our office, it’s all about fake snow, massive icicles, Winter Wonderland and finding people who don’t mind dressing up as Santa. It’s an odd feeling – probably weirder than the obverse, where we spend winter dreaming up summer parties. That actually feels quite nice! It’s a form of escapism for us. But trying to imagine the cold and ice when all you desperately want is warmth and sun is more of a challenge.
We love what we do though, and Christmas gives us a chance to really play about and be big kids. Corporate parties can be a bit dry, but the silly season gives them a chance to dress up and be children again. Popular themes – apart from the beautiful and enduring Winter Wonderland – include classy looking themes like Narnia or Fire & Ice but we see a lot of daft stuff too, like Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, or Alice in Wonderland. Cirque themes are big too, with lots of performers and a slightly more risqué feel If it seems slightly weird that people plan so far ahead, it’s because of the availability of space. At no time in the events calendar are venues in greater demand – more businesses have Christmas parties than any other type of event all year – so finding a place to have your party can be hard. We take bookings for spaces in January for the next December. So if you’re the bod in charge of your Christmas party and you haven’t already booked, you’d better look sharp. HEALTH
HEALTH & WELLBEING Can an apple a day really keep the doctor away?
D
espite recent government awareness campaigns, it is estimated that only 15% of UK adults are getting their “five a day” intake of fruit and vegetables; on average we are managing to consume less than three portions. But how important for our health is it really? Well, there are some conflicting opinions on this but evidence suggests that getting your five a day could protect against strokes and some cancers and may even delay the development of cataracts in the eye and help improve bone health. It is not always easy to make a change for the better today when the potential health issues that could be prevented might be so far in the future, so I would rather focus on what upping your intake of fruit and veg can do for you now! Fruit and vegetables are a good source of dietary fibre and tend to contain carbohydrates that provide slowerrelease energy than starchy foods such as bread, pasta and potatoes (unfortunately spuds don’t count towards your five a day), which means healthier bowel function, feeling fuller for longer, better management of diabetes and maintenance of a healthier weight. They are also
a great source of vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals - essential for growth, repair and maintenance of a healthy immune system; some of these also act as antioxidants, protecting the body from free-radical damage that can cause diseases and may be involved in the ageing process. As a rule of thumb, dark green leafy vegetables and deeply-coloured fruits tend to contain the greatest concentrations of beneficial nutrients, but try to get as much variety as possible as that will ensure you get a good balance of different vitamins and minerals. Substituting some of the starchy foods in your diet for fruits and vegetables can only be a good thing but don’t neglect the other food groups in your quest to increase your fruit and veg intake – as well as the carbohydrates we also need a healthy balance of proteins fats and other vitamins and minerals that can be found in meat, fish, dairy, mushrooms, nuts and pulses!
