Brighton • Hove • Worthing • And growing...
As summer continues we look forward to some of the region’s best outdoor events taking place in the coming months, and hope the sun continues to shine for the likes of Brighton & Hove Pride and the Worthing International Birdman Festival. With the recent heat wave, and the fact that we endured the wettest July ever this time last year, the unpredictability of the Great British weather has become our chief inspiration for this issue’s fashion pages, helping us to select some chic pieces to keep you stylish come rain or shine. We also have our usual previews of live music and theatre productions not to be missed, a look at new film releases coming soon to the cinema plus some great and informative pieces on health and wellbeing. Special thanks to Torso Vertical for designing our front cover this issue – one of our best ever, we think. As always we’d love to hear what you think of our magazine; Send questions and comments to: info@insidemagazine.co.uk or via Twitter @InsideMagazine. With a perpetual uniqueness which sees them ever evolving musically, they have the ability to send you dreamily into a fantasyland of childlike lullaby with one song, and bring you back down to harsh, honest reality in the next. cocorosiemusic.com

KING KHAN AND THE SHRINES
20th August | The Haunt
2nd September | The Haunt

Formed of Ripley Johnson of Wooden Shjips and his partner Sanae Yamada, the pair create deep dark hazy songs, combining fuzzy guitars with heavy keyboard and drum machines. moonduo.org
The supreme genius of King Khan and The Shrines has been felt since the band formed in 1999, and continues 14 years and 6 records later – 7 if you include their greatest hits release. Khan as the electrifying frontman is known for his high-energy performance style, and with a raucous mix of 60 garage-rock and psychedelic soul their Brighton show is not to be missed. kingkhanmusic.com

FOOD & DRINK What to eat when on the street... There’s a new kid in town each Friday lunchtime at the Bright-helm Gardens near Brighton station, as the small grassy park becomes home to a variety of food popup stalls, serving local goodness to hungry bellies. Kim Chandler is a regular visitor of the foodies paradise, and tells us about some of the market’s highlights.
I
have attended Street Diner most weeks, and eaten a variety of lovely food from local favourites such as Troll’s Pantry, Yum Yum Ninja, Very Good Food, Sultan’s Delight and on my recent visit on guest spot #2, Tina the supper club queen ‘Cantina’. Serving up a healthy ‘lunch box’ of rice filled tomatoes and various yummy salads, and incredible aubergine bruschettas with tahini, tomatoes, egg and herb sauce topped with petite violet flowers. I sampled the potato fritatta with curried carrots and a beetroot topping. Delicious. The choice of food is brilliant; from spicy sweet vegetable dosas to hot-as-hell pulled pork burrito’s from Dead Good Burritos, juicy halloumi and chorizo burgers to sugary lemon gluten free gazelles. Go alone unless you want serious food envy!
The Street Diner food market is open every Friday 11am3pm, (Aim to get there before 2pm - when they begin to sell out) and brings together all sorts of local food sellers, enthusiasts and eaters, a brilliant way to get involved in the Sussex food scene. Please remember to forget your pack lunch on a Friday and head down to support local food producers instead!
Street Diner runs every Friday in the Bright-helm gardens between 11am and 3pm. Look out also for the special bank holiday edition on Monday 26th August. You can follow them on Twitter @StreetDiner and via Facebook.com/streetdinerbrighton for more information and to find out which food venders will be there each week, including information on weekly guest spots. HEALTH
HEALTH & WELLBEING Steps for a simpler day
O
ur days seem to get faster & faster and filled with more and more distractions. This is a huge point of stress for a lot of people and can make the difference to whether we are sick or healthy. So, is it possible to simplify our days? It is, but as with all habits, they can be hard to break so doing it in steps can make it easier.
1. Know What’s Important. The simple version of simplifying is “Identify what’s important, and eliminate the rest.” Not always possible I appreciate that, but having an understanding of what is actually really important to you helps keep things in perspective. 2. Say No to Extra Commitments. Now that you’ve identified what’s important, you need to start saying “No” so that you can create space and make time for the things that are on your important list. List and evaluate your commitments (professional and personal), and say No to at least one. It just takes a call or email. 3. Limit Tasks. Each morning, list your 1-3 most important tasks. List other tasks you’d like to do. Say no to some of them. See if you can limit your list to 5-7 tasks per day. Limiting your tasks helps you focus. Acknowledge you’re not going to get everything
done in one day. 4. Do not get distracted! When are you going to do your most important work? Schedule it with a block of time and become unavailable. Close the Internet, hold all calls. Just do the most important task, then the next one. Everything else WILL wait. 5. Slow Down. We spend our lives rushing around like lunatics. Slow down. Life won’t collapse if you aren’t rushing from task to task, email to email. You can pause; take a moment to breathe before moving on. 6. Stop multi-tasking! One task at a time, with full focus on that task. You will find that you will get more done in less time if you concentrate on each task and there will be fewer mistakes .7. Batch smaller tasks together. Emails, paperwork, the little things at the bottom of your task list, shouldn’t get in the way of your important tasks. But they still need to be done. It’s best to do these later in the day, when your energy is lower and you’ve done the important tasks for the day, do them in one go. Don’t let the small tasks get in the way of the big ones. HEALTH
HEALTH & WELLBEING Stay hay fever free this summer
A
re you suffering with itchy, watery eyes, sneezing and a runny nose this summer? It could be hay fever, even if you’ve never had it before. With Brighton sitting at number 10 in the list of UK hay fever hotspots it is no wonder that so many of us are suffering this year! Why are so many people affected? A late spring has meant that the tree pollen has been delayed long enough to coincide with the summer grass pollen season, leading to higher than usual pollen levels during the worst period for the majority of hay fever sufferers. There is also evidence to show that pollens can be carried deeper into the lungs and stick more easily to the nose lining if they are attached to particles from diesel exhausts. Add to that a nice sea breeze to blow the pollen around and you have the perfect recipe for hay fever! So, what is hay fever? It is an allergic reaction to the pollen entering your system, in which your immune system mistakenly identifies it as a harmful pathogen, such as a virus. In an attempt to prevent the spread of this perceived threat, the body releases chemicals including histamines, which cause localised inflammation and
congestion in the affected tissues and an increase in mucus production, leading to symptoms similar to the common cold. How can the symptoms be relieved? In terms of medication, antihistamines inhibit histamine release in the body, reducing the severity of the symptoms. Steroid nasal sprays are aAnother popular choice and can be used together with antihistamines; they reduce local inflammation in the nose so work very well for nasal symptoms. Other methods of controlling hay fever include staying indoors when the pollen count is high, showering and washing your hair when returning from long periods outdoors, and drying laundry inside rather than outside. Garlic contains natural antihistamines and foods rich in omega-3 are known to have antiinflammatory properties. Finally, many people swear by a spoonful of local honey a day and although the evidence to support this remedy is lacking, it makes a nice alternative to sugar in your green or black tea, both of which contain anti-oxidants that can help reduce the inflammation of hay fever!
