A Fantastic Fall Is In Store
I
love fall in mid-Missouri: breaking out the sweatshirts, watching leaves twirl in a refreshingly cool breeze, getting the fireplace ready, and football on practically every channel. While change is certainly in the air, one constant remains — Joe Machens Dealerships and you, joining together in a commitment to community. Many thanks for helping to make our inaugural Radio-thon and 26th annual Labor Day weekend Sale-a-Thon for MDA huge successes. Because of your loyalty and patronage, we were able to donate thousands of dollars to assist families affected by muscular dystrophy. As the national vice president of the Muscular Dystrophy Association, I hold this organization near and dear to my heart, and I truly appreciate your support. A high-five also goes out to everyone who participated in last month’s Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Whether you joined Team Machens or another group, I applaud your efforts. The turnout was fantastic, and the funds raised will go a long way in the fight against breast cancer. I would also like to thank all of you who took part in the Joe Machens Ford Lincoln Drive 4 UR School event. Due to all of
your test drives, Ford Motor Co. donated nearly $6,000 to Columbia high schools. Jefferson City, you’re on deck — be sure to attend the Joe Machens Capital City Ford Lincoln fundraiser at Helias High School on Oct. 14. Get out and Drive 4 UR students! You owe it to yourself to experience the all-new 2012 Hyundai Azera, this month’s cover feature. A superb combination of sport, comfort and technology — along with class-leading fuel efficiency — the Azera is simply an amazing ride. Read more about it on Page M9, and take one for a spin at Joe Machens Hyundai. While you’re out and about, be sure to swing by our new Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz sites. Both facilities are nearing completion and should be ready for your car shopping before the end of the year. Again, thank you for partnering with Joe Machens Dealerships as we continue to help make a difference in people’s lives. Here’s to a great fall season, a victorious MU Homecoming game on Oct. 27, and a safe, happy Halloween. As always, I hope you enjoy this month’s issue of Machens Advantage. Feel free to let me know your thoughts. My door is always open.

Test Drive: 2012 Hyundai Azera
The Hyundai Azera
S

top. Don’t look at that window sticker. Just open up the driver’s side door of the Hyundai Azera and sit yourself down in that spacious, heated and cooled, leather-upholstered seat. Take in the wellappointed instrument panel. Engage the push-button start and listen to the soft hum of the engine. Enjoy the smooth ride, and feel the powerful response when you press the gas pedal. Luxurious? Absolutely. Expensive? No. The Azera exudes the quiet confidence of a high-dollar luxury sedan but at a surprisingly affordable price. The redesigned Azera incorporates Hyundai’s “fluidic sculpture” exterior design, which is undeniably attractive. The new grille suggests a bird in flight and the swept-back headlamps contribute to improved aerodynamics. A new 3.3-liter, direct-injection V-6 engine goes easy on fuel and earns the re-imagined sedan a respectable EPA rating of 29 miles per gallon on the highway. The Azera has appeal that cuts a wide demographic swath — from young families who will appreciate the heated and cooled back seat (and you know the kids are going to love that!) and
enormous 16.3-cubic-foot trunk, to empty nesters who are ready to treat themselves to a sedan that is loaded with extravagances such as the power rear sunshade, generous headroom and legroom, and Infinity sound system. Some features, such as the sunshade and a power tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel, come with the oh-soworth-it optional Technology Package. The Azera drives like a dream. This front-wheel-drive beauty has plenty of get-up-and-go and a SACHS Amplitude Selective Damping Suspension that smooths out the road’s rough spots. It hugs the road nicely through tight curves and makes quick, confident stops with nary a wiggle in the rear end. There’s a particular quiet that is typically associated with more expensive luxury cars, but the Azera has it, too. This car feels substantial and safe on the road, but to maximize safety, Hyundai has equipped its new Azera with nine airbags, impact-reducing front seats, a backup camera and rear parking sensors. With the redesigned Azera, Hyundai is once again proving that head-turning design and outstanding performance can also be affordable.

Car Care
Does Your Car Make The Grade?
T
he school year is well under way and whether you’re driving your own kids to band practice or carpooling with other neighborhood families, a properly maintained vehicle is the safest, most dependable way to go. “When your passengers are your children and their classmates, making sure your car gets more than a passing grade is extra important,” says Rich White, executive director of the Car Care Council. “A preventive maintenance checkup with necessary repairs performed will give parents peace of mind as their children travel to and from school.” To make sure your car gets high marks for safety and dependability, the Car Care Council recommends a 21st-century tuneup be performed to make sure the following systems are

in proper working order: battery, charging and starting; engine mechanical; power train control; fuel; ignition; and emissions. In addition, the following items should be in peak condition for carpool season: tires and tire pressure; brakes; hoses and belts; air filters; wipers; exterior and interior lighting; and fluid levels, including engine oil, power steering, transmission, brake, windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant. The Car Care Council also suggests that all vehicles have a roadside emergency kit on hand that includes items such as flares, a first-aid kit, a tire-changing jack, a tire-pressure gauge, jumper cables and a blanket. In addition, store important telephone numbers in the glove box or in a cellphone in case of a breakdown or emergency.

HELPFUL ADVICE FOR AUTO OWNERS Top Seller
Q: A:
What is the best-selling car of all time?
The No. 1 selling vehicle of all time is the Toyota Corolla. To date, more than 39 million Corollas have been sold worldwide. Billed as an inexpensive, fuelefficient sedan, it’s long been a consumer favorite, and has undergone 10 generations of model upgrades since it first went into production in 1966. Today’s version is loaded with fun, and gets more than 35 mpg. Stop by Joe Machens Toyota today and see why the Corolla remains so popular.
Power Up
Q: A:
Can you tell me what is meant by a vehicle’s “powertrain”?
The powertrain is the core of a car’s energy production and distribution to key components, allowing it to move and gain momentum. It’s comprised of three separate units: the engine, drive axle and transmission. The engine provides the energy for movement, which in turn is transferred to the transmission. The transmission intensifies the input power and conveys it to the drive axle for torque to spin the wheels. There are different levels and specifications of powertrains, depending on the vehicle’s purpose. Your Joe Machens sales representative can help you choose the one that best meets your needs.
Tire Trivia
Q: A:
I recently bought a new set of tires at Joe Machens. What happens to the old ones?
The majority of our tires head off for re-use. There are currently more than 100 new products that contain recycled tire rubber, including playground cover, soil additives, flooring and construction materials. Here are some additional scrap tire figures from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency: ▲ Generated annually: 290 million ▲ Used for fuel: 130 million ▲ Used in civil engineering projects: 56 million ▲ Used in ground-cover applications: 28 million ▲ Exported outside of the United States: 9 million ▲ Punched/stamped into new products: 7 million
Commercial Zone
Q: A:
How many commercials do you run each year?
In 2011, Joe Machens Dealerships aired more than a half million television and radio ads for our 11 vehicle franchises. That’s nearly one per minute, every hour, of every day. That number will surely rise with the arrival of Joe Machens Volkswagen.

BMW Voted World’s Best Car Manufacturer In Travel Magazine Poll
B
MW has been named World’s Best Car Manufacturer by the readers of Frequent Business Traveler, an online publication written for and by affluent frequent business travelers.
The Frequent Business Traveler GlobeRunner Awards recognize the world’s best travel companies, including airline, hotel, car rental agencies and travel websites. “BMW has been singled out by the road warrior readers of Frequent Business
Traveler as the best car manufacturer in the world,” says Jonathan Spira, editorial director of Frequent Business Traveler. “Their very selective preferences and extensive patronage of hotels, airlines and everything travel-related make their votes particularly meaningful.” The publication’s editorial team of experienced travel journalists nominated companies for the awards in more than 20 categories. Readers cast almost 50,000 votes during online voting from March 1 through May 15. Winners will receive a personalized award; in addition, a donation will be made in each winner’s name to the PKD Foundation, an organization dedicated to discovering treatments and a cure for polycystic kidney disease, which claimed the life of Frequent Business Traveler co-founder Greg Spira. Coverage of the awards, and the complete list of GlobeRunner award winners, is available online at www.frequentbusinesstraveler.com.
Mazda Doubles Production Of SKYACTIV Engines
M
azda Corp., headquartered in Hiroshima, Japan, has announced it is increasing production of SKYACTIV® engines in October. Current production is 400,000 units for global distribution; production will increase to 800,000 units. In the United States, the 2012 Mazda3 and 2013 CX-5 feature SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter gasoline engines. SKYACTIV technology is the brand’s proprietary engineering and development of fuel-efficient, performanceoriented vehicles as a result of lightweight and redesigned engines, transmission, chassis and body structures. Using SKYACTIV technology, Mazda plans to increase fuel efficiency by 30 percent for all its vehicles offered globally by 2015 (when compared to 2008 figures). This will correspond to a 23 percent reduction in fuel consumption and subsequently lower carbon dioxide output. In the United States, the refreshed 2012 Mazda3 with SKYACTIV technology was launched in the fall of 2011, followed by the all-new

2013 CX-5 in February. The all-new 2014 Mazda6 will be the next vehicle to feature SKYACTIV technology and is expected to go on sale early next year. “The addition of SKYACTIV technology into our U.S. lineup has only further bolstered Mazda’s sales and reputation within the industry and, most importantly, among consumers,” says Jim O’Sullivan, president and CEO, Mazda North American Operations. “Mazda3 has always been a stellar performer and when coupled with CX-5, more than 55 percent of sales in June consisted of SKYACTIV vehicles. SKYACTIV technology works. The awards on safety, design and engineering are testament to that, and something we all are very proud of.” Available as a compact sedan or hatchback, the 2012 Mazda3, when equipped with SKYACTIV technology, starts at $18,700. With the SKYACTIVDrive six-speed automatic, the Mazda3 sedan offers fuel economy at 40 miles per gallon on the highway. A similarly
equipped hatchback returns 39 mpg on the highway, class-leading economy when compared to compact five-doors. Mazda3 also was named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The 2013 CX-5 compact SUV is the first Mazda to receive the full suite of SKYACTIV technologies and, as one of the lightest vehicles in its segment, boasts best-in-class combined fuel economy at 29 mpg for front-wheel-drive models and 28 mpg for all-wheel-drive models. CX-5 also features the highest highway fuel economy of any SUV sold in North America — including hybrids — at 35 mpg. Also an IIHS Top Safety Pick, the CX-5 starts at $20,995.

Happiness... IS A NEW VEHICLE FROM JOE MACHENS
“I found this truck on the Joe Machens eBay site and drove in from Springfield, Ill., to purchase it. My salesman, Jason Lane at Machens Vandiver, made the whole experience simple and enjoyable.” — Gina Bond
Pat Homan is a longtime customer of Joe Machens Ford Lincoln. That’s because her late husband, Wray, was a “hall of fame” salesman there for 28 years. These days, Pat turns to family friend Russell Hoskins for her vehicle needs. Russell is a 14-year veteran of the dealership. The two are pictured above with Pat’s latest purchase, a 2010 Lincoln MKS. The Homan legacy lives on at the store: Pat and Wray’s daughter, Edie, has been a JMFL administrative assistant since 2003. “Nathan Akpan, our salesman at Joe Machens Toyota, was friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. He is the best sales person we have ever had and we couldn’t be happier with our 2012 Camry Hybrid.” — Mr. & Mrs. Richard Hanson
“I was looking for a fuel-efficient and fun vehicle. Rob Chen at Joe Machens Hyundai was super to work with when I bought my 2012 Veloster. I loved the car and service so much, I got my wife to trade for a 2013 Sonata. We are now a Hyundai family.” — Randy & Stephanie Grunau
