Hotel Kurrajong Canberra reopens
C
anberra travellers can now return to an era of old-world charm and elegance, with the recent reopening of the historic Hotel Kurrajong Canberra. Nestled among trees between Lake Burley Griffin and Capital Hill, the heritagelisted hotel that originally opened in 1926 is in Canberra’s parliamentary district, operated as a boarding house and more recently, a hotel school. In a joint venture between TFE Hotels and the National Roads & Motorist’s Association (NRMA), the pavilion-style hotel has been fully restored with a distinct art deco theme. Originally constructed as one of two hotels of equal walking distance from Old Parliament House, Hotel Kurrajong is part of the fabric of Australia’s political capital. It is most famous as post World War II Prime Minister Ben Chifley’s home in Canberra; he preferred the comfortable, down-toearth hotel to the Australian PM’s official residence, The Lodge. The restored Hotel Kurrajong has old world charm with a stylish and contemporary twist. Guests will be struck by the 1920’s-inspired decor and hospitality from the moment they arrive. The cosy fireplace, the Library that is full of historic literature and the collages of photographs from different periods along the hallways give guests a sense of the hotel’s history.
Hotel Kurrajong offers a premium dining experience at Chifley’s Bar & Grill, a quality-driven steakhouse and bar with the award-winning hatted chef Michael Chatto at the helm. Chatto has created a delicious menu with the use of fresh local produce, hand selected meats and more than 120 local and international wines. With a strong focus on premium beef, Chifley’s features a stand-alone steak menu, where customers can choose from 18 different cuts including David Blackmore Wagyu and Cape Grim Black Angus, each listed with its weight, origin and marble scores. Michael and his team will take inspiration from the 1920’s to create a unique experience for diners. Guests will be able to select cuts from the window to The Back Bench, a meat ageing room on display in the dining room, which spreads into a glassed-in terrace overlooking the hotel gardens.
The world’s most beautiful playground is calling. Play at Jack’s Point championship golf course then relax in luxury at The Rees Hotel Queenstown. Contact reservations@therees.co.nz for golf stay, play and dine packages.

The iconic hotel underwent a significant renovation to ensure it retains many of its historic architectural features including pavilions, deep verandas and courtyards. The hotel’s sophisticated design and chic furnishings also pay homage to its notable origins and design by the Commonwealth’s Chief Architect John Smith Murdoch in 1926; who was also responsible for the design of Old Parliament House. The hotel comprises 147 rooms, 26 of which are located in the heritage wing, four executive suites, four balcony rooms and eight terrace rooms. The hotel’s charming garden setting is keeping most of his original plantings that were established by Thomas Charles Weston, then the Superintendent of Parks and Gardens in Canberra. www.tfehotels.com
Quivira Golf Club Nicklaus opens
G
olf legend and course designer Jack Nicklaus has officially opened what may be the most majestic course on his resume, Quivira Golf Club, on the tip of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula. Numerous dignitaries, resort executives, international media and property owners gathered for an official ceremony on the dazzling 7,139-yard course, followed by a ceremonial tee off on the 12th hole with Ernesto Coppel Kelly, owner and developer of Quivira and Pueblo Bonito Resorts and Spas; Marcos Alberto Covarrubias Villasenor, Governor of the State of Baja California Sur; and Jack Nicklaus. Marked by huge windswept dunes, sheer granite cliffs and rolling desert foothills 10 minutes from downtown Cabo San Lucas, Quivira, the sixth Jack Nicklaus-designed course in Los Cabos, is a masterpiece poised to redefine the Cabo golf experience.
revered for its consistently sunny weather and unique mountaindesert-ocean ecosystem. In addition to its stunning panoramas and sharp drops from tee to fairway, Quivira offers players more oceanfront exposure than any other course in Los Cabos. All 18 holes feature panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, which swells with breaching whales during the winter months. Completing the experience at Quivira Golf Club is a stylish, thatched-roof clubhouse between the first tee and 18th green that offers a large rectangular bar, a casual steakhouse, and ample outdoor seating overlooking the sea. Beside the clubhouse is a spacious double-ended practice facility that parallels the ocean, as well as an elongated practice putting green and an expanded short-game practice area. Quivira Golf Club is accessible to guests of the four Pueblo Bonito Oceanfront Resorts and Spas in Los Cabos, and to owners of properties in Copala, Montecristo Estates Luxury Villas, and Novaispania Residences. Each of the Pueblo Bonito Resorts welcomes guests with lavish accommodations, unsurpassed service, fine dining and a host of on-site amenities. Complimentary shuttle service to and from Quivira Golf Club is included within the Quivira development.
“This is one of the great pieces of property in the world,” Nicklaus said. “We tried to create some excitement on the mountain and in the dunes, and I believe we’ve created a golf course that plays as spectacular as it looks.” The formal opening of Quivira marks a watershed moment in the history of golf development in Los Cabos, a destination

Big Mike’s Breakfast is a popular inclusion for groups at Pacific Heights Holiday Apartments
Pacific Heights Holiday Apartments / Munn Tower House Merimbula Join the growing number of golfers experiencing the fantastic golf packages provided by Mike McGuire and Yumi Yoshida at the centrally located Pacific Heights Holiday Apartments, only 350 metres from Merimbula’s coffee precinct and restaurant strip. All packages provided by Pacific Heights include motorised carts, green fees, and accommodation you can choose one of the advertised packages or Mike will quote on personalised packages. For groups of four or more, Big Mike’s Breakfast is provided outdoors in the BBQ
area adjacent to the swimming pool area. The lake and village views are spectacular, as the sun rises in the East and Mike personally cooks up a storm on the BBQs; bacon, eggs, sausages, fried tomatoes, toast, tea or coffee and plenty of choice on the cereal table, with a little fruit thrown in are all inclusive in Big Mike’s Breakfast. Being a single-figure golfer for 40 years, Mike knows what the avid golfer wants; local knowledge, the weather forecast, the latest copy of Inside Golf on the coffee table, complimentary cold beers in the fridge greets you on arrival, with ample parking and 20 units available.
But don’t just take our word for it. Check out these reviews from a pair of recent guests: “Myself and four mates came down for a golf weekend and it was superb. The owner Mike greeted us after our first round of golf at Bega, thoughtfully putting some beers into the fridge (complimentary). Rooms great, views brilliant. Service magnificent. We had a great cooked breakfast and it was quiet. I would definitely stay here again and would highly recommend it.” And... “Went to Pacific Heights with friends for a golfing weekend from Canberra. Very easy to get to, only 2 hours from Canberra.
Excellent accommodation - roomy and very well set up, great hospitality from Mike (including excellent breakfasts by the pool), and Mike did a super job of organising our golf at 3 local courses. Highly recommended.“ Pacific Heights caters for larger groups as well as the husband and wife couple enjoying Merimbula and the Sapphire Coast. Their units are two and threebedroom apartments all with en-suites for each bedroom, which is great for the golfing groups. Tura Beach Country Club
Tura Beach’s 18-Hole Championship Golf Course has, over an extended period, been a mainstay in the Top 100 Public Courses in Australia. Renowned for its brilliant design and unparalleled scenery, it was Australia’s first Dedicated
Golf Course Community. Hosting the celebrated Bega Cheese Pro-Am and Rated No.1 by playing professionals on the country NSW Pro-Am circuit, Tura Beach Country Club is the true golf gem of the far south coast of NSW. With its inspiring views over the Sapphire Coast and adjoining headlands, the Course weaves its way down to and along the beach and back through mature eucalyptus forest. Designed by Peter Thomson and Michael Wolveridge, the course abounds with memorable holes. The daunting water carry on the Par 3 (181m) 5th and split fairway on the 6th are just two examples. But it’s perhaps the classical “risk and reward” par 5’s that
are most memorable; all six of them, each with its own unique bunkering and water challenges. So while visiting the area, don’t miss the opportunity of playing this unique and challenging course. Its reputation is growing daily and, with the clubhouse renowned for its “Million Dollar Views”, it’s fast becoming one of the most popular golfing and tourist destinations on the NSW coast. RACV Royal Pines Resort RACV Royal Pines Resort operates the Gold Coast’s only 27-hole composite golf course where golfers can take in all the benefits of resort living while enjoying a first-class golfing experience. Three distinct nine-hole layouts offer a truly unique golf course experience and promises to challenge a golfer from tee to green.
As the permanent home to the RACV Ladies Masters and many other prestigious golf tournaments including the Australian PGA Championship, RACV Royal Pines Resort is the home of championship golf in Queensland. The Resort’s courses have and will continue to inspire, motivate and challenge the very best in golfers with a major refurbishment currently taking place. Nine holes of the tournament course were redeveloped in 2014 and open for play in the 2014 Australian PGA Championship; with a second nine holes undergoing redevelopment in 2015, ensuring 18 of the 27 immaculately conditioned holes remain open for general play on a year-round basis. The golf course refurbishment will see every green complex, surrounds and landing areas redesigned. Significantly, every bunker will also be replaced to ensure the redevelopment not only brings the course up to modernday championship standards, but retains the ability to cater for players of all ability. Originally designed by Japanese course architect Tomojiro Maruyama, the current stunning transformation is in the hands of famous Australian golfer Graham Marsh. The nine-hole layout on the western side of the resort was also designed by Marsh in 2004. One thing you can count on at Royal Pines is that the golf course is always in immaculate condition. The tropical conditions are conducive to lush fairways, true greens and

Lakelands Golf Club Situated in the heart of the Gold Coast, less than 10 minutes from Broadbeach and 15 minutes from Surfers Paradise, Lakelands Golf Club is Jack Nicklaus’ first signature course designed in Australia. Lakelands Golf Club combines the traditions of Golf and Hospitality by providing its members, guests and visitors with the environment, facilities and services that satisfy their golf, social and business needs and interests. Opened in 1997, Lakelands Golf Club has gained a reputation for “The Best Serving the Best” providing standards and facilities second to none on the Gold Coast. Multiple tee positions make the course user-friendly yet challenging, whatever the standard of golf you play. Nicklaus has used bunkering extensively in his strategic design and water features on many of the course’s 18 holes.
Lakelands Golf Club Beyond the magnificent clubhouse, it is the course that shines. After 21 years, the Thomson Wolveridge design still holds its own as one of the finest links-style designs in the country. The design duo had a tight vision for the way links golf should be played and this layout is a testament to those values. It is ranked by Australian golfing legend Peter Senior as “one of the best championship courses you’ll play.” Recently voted #1 Gold Coast Golf Course in Golf Australia’s Top 100 Public Courses, Links Hope Island consistently rates above its peers. Not only is the

layout carefully mastered, the daily conditioning and playability lends ample homage to design philosophies.
Links Restaurant and Bar stocks a full selection of beverages and a tasty array of freshly-prepared dishes daily.
With the Golf Pilot GPS system on board every cart, the experience on course is just as sophisticated. The first of its type in Australia, the Golf Pilot GPS system provides accurate distances from the tee to fairway bunkers, hazards and out-ofbounds including the lay-up distance to any hazard at a glance.
The club welcomes visitors and there are plenty of opportunities for both corporate and social golfers to enjoy one of Australia’s favourite golf clubs.
On return to the clubhouse, visitors can relive their round on the Legend’s Terrace overlooking the Aquatic Driving Range.

hen it comes to playing golf in New Zealand, it simply doesn’t get better than Queenstown. The views alone are worth the airfare and the courses showcase the scenery beautifully. Whether it’s the sweeping views of Queenstown Bay from Queenstown Golf Club, The Remarkables Mountain Range and Lake Wakatipu from Jacks Point or the hilly surrounds of Arrowtown from The Hills, Millbrook or Arrowtown Golf Club, golfers have always got great views to take in. Aside from the views, it’s the also
changes in style of each course that really intrigues. Each course feels very different than the last and golfers won’t feel like they play two courses even remotely similar in Queenstown. There are plenty of golf destinations that boast more courses but the variety from one to the next and the varying challenges sees groups returning to Queenstown year after year to rediscover what makes it so special for golfing. There are certainly standout courses like Jacks Point that really inspire with its stunning views and rugged, natural beauty but each course has its own charm and often the club courses silently
impress even the golfing purists. Another attraction is the world-class food and wine on offer, an area where Queenstown continues to raise the bar year upon year. Central Otago established itself as a premier Pinot Noir producing region years ago but has now regarded as one of NZ’s top destinations for dining. Everything from Asian street-style food to fine NZ meats, seafood and hearty pub meals are on offer and visitors would be disappointed to find a meal less than excellent wherever they go in Queenstown. When it comes to golf travel, choosing
a Golf Tour Operator can be just as important as the destination. Just like in golf—where it’s the little things that matter, like choosing the right ball, grip, shaft, etc-- little things make a huge difference in a golf trip, and dealing with a ground-based tour agent means you get local information first hand. Somebody on the other end of the phone that you can trust to get things done when you’re trying to organise a party of people and ensure you get to see the best of what NZ has to offer, whether it’s golf courses, restaurants or sightseeing. Remarkable Golf Tours (RGT) was established in Queenstown in 2007 to provide a range of golf services for visitors to New Zealand and have arranged tours for thousands of golfers from all corners of the globe. Starting with one vehicle for running daily transfers between local hotels and golf courses, RGT have expanded their vehicle fleet to cater to a range of group sizes from couples to large touring parties. Regardless of party size, the service remains focussed on the finer details of planning that ensure a seamless golf trip. However large or small your group is, take the opportunity to contact Remarkable Golf Tours to see what they can offer you for a memorable golf trip to New Zealand. Cathedrals, churches and golf tours: Architectural grandeur or just ‘ABC’? Peter McCarthy
P
utting aside religious beliefs and principles, there is no denying that the world’s religions are responsible for some of the most magnificent and inspiring architectural feats in history. As centrepieces for their respected faiths, The Pantheon and St Peter’s Basilica in Rome, the Temple of Confucius in China,
Lotus Temple, Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Mahabodhi Temple and Sri Harmandir Sahib in India, the Masjid al-Haram mosque in Saudia Arabia and the Great Synagogue in Budapest are undeniably magnificent constructions. But what place do these monuments have on a golf tour? Go Golfing aspires to taking golfers to the world’s most alluring golf, cultural and sightseeing
destinations and indeed some of the most iconic tourist attractions are places of religious significance. Diplomatically, Go Golfing’s tour brochures steer clear of religious or political spin, so I was taken a little off guard by a recent inquirer whose first question was how many cathedrals are visited on the 2015 tour to Spain and Portugal. Why? He hated churches. Before our conversation I thought ABC were just the first three letters of the alphabet but I was quickly educated that they stand for Another Bloody Cathedral. It seems a previous ‘non golf’ European tour had more than its share of cathedral visits and he was hell bent on making sure he didn’t sign up for more of the same.

By the time he was killed by a Barcelona tram in 1926, he’d been working on the Sagradia Familia for 43 years. By all accounts he was a nightmare for the builders as he preferred dimensional scale models to architectural plans, and just added details as they were conceived in his brain. It was interesting that Gaudi was only

That said, the cathedrals in Spain are distinctly different and the Sagradia Familia (translated The Holy Family) in Barcelona is well worth a visit. This enormous Catholic Church in Barcelona, designed by renowned Antoni Gaudi is a tribute to the weird and wonderful imagination of this architectural genius.
known to have been attracted to one woman, a teacher, but his affections were not reciprocated, leaving him plenty of time to concentrate on his buildings. Not sure if married life would have allowed him the same dedication to his craft. Gaudi as a young man took pride in his appearance but this changed radically as he aged. At the time of the accident that caused his death, he was taken for a beggar and only given rudimentary care which didn’t augur well for his longevity. Eventually he was recognized, but it was too late and he was buried in the same church where he had spent the majority of his life. The work was slow on the church as
money was always very tight and it was still a long way from completion at the time of his death in 1926. In fact the Sagradia Familia is due for completion in 2026. The Go Golfing Spain and Portugal Mediterranean Golf Tour has a small taste of cathedrals and a huge dollop of golf. The best courses of continental Europe are featured - Oitavos Dunes, Penha Longa and Finca Cortesin among the highlights. Cooking classes were a highlight of previous tours and you will experience the flavours of the region, both wine and food. Spain remains the world’s #1 golf tourism destination in terms of visitors and indeed Portugal was just voted best golf
destination at the World Golf Awards. The early bird prices are extended to Inside Golf readers until 20 February 2015.
