T
he Chasing the Sun golf tournament is arguably the rarest and most unique golf event on the planet.
Contested from April 5-14, 2018, this Australian golfing adventure is played on the world’s longest golf course, which stretches from Ceduna in South Australia to Kalgoorlie in Western Australia. That’s 1365kms of travel. Along the way, you play 18 holes of golf on some of the most unique golf holes in the world. You’ll experience some of Australia’s famous outback hospitality and see amazing scenery. Course manager Alf Caputo said the tournament attracts golfers from every state in Australia along with many from overseas. “It’s a very simple tournament, all self-drive with both Caravan and Motel accommodation pre-booked for the golfers. The tournament rewards not only open women’s and men’s winners, but also the nett handicap winners in both categories,” he says. “We commence the tournament at the Ceduna golf course on Saturday, April 5 with a champagne breakfast to toast the sunrise. Then after a week of fun, golf and friendship we toast the setting sun at the magnificent Kalgoorlie Golf Course. The golfers have finally caught up with the sun.” All the holes on Nullarbor Links feature their own unique name relating to their area, like, Dingo’s Den, Border Kangaroo, Eagles Nest and Skylab. During the tournament, golfers experience a fantastic Australian farm stay and are hosted by third-generation Australian farmers, Debbie and Poggie Kloock. Golfers will shear some sheep, view fantastic historic farm machinery, taste some delicious, freshlycaught whiting and enjoy a real bush dance.
“As the golfers venture west, we spot the whales and the beautiful cliffs of the Great Australian Bight. Then we continue west and pass the beautiful Eucla beaches, meeting the lonely pirate who many years ago buried a treasure on the beach. He will show you where you find the gold. The next morning it’s back into golf, trying to win the $10,000 hole-in-one at Brumby’s Run at Madura. As the group move further west we experience an evening of traditional indigenous dance with Norseman’s Ngadju people, this is a fantastic night at the Norseman golf club. “Next morning, it’s off to Australia’s gold capital, Kalgoorlie. Here the golfers can visit the largest gold mine in the southern hemisphere, and play an 18-hole Ambrose event. Finally, on Saturday night, we have the final presentation dinner and our final toast to the setting sun.” It’s an amazing week of golf fun and friendship! More: www.nullarborlinks.com •

GOLDEN OLDIES FOUR-COURSE CHALLENGE Golfers at the Christchurch Golden Oldies Four Course Challenge in April 2018 can expect to enjoy golf on four very different and challenging courses around the Canterbury region. We asked the golf pro at each of the four courses to share their favourite hole and some tips for the unsuspecting golfer.
Anthony Doyle, Christchurch Golf Club Feature hole: 13 (Land’s End) Par: 5 Black tee: 485m Blue tee: 448m Australian women’s coach, Ian Triggs some years ago selected this hole as one of his signature holes in golf and a very challenging one at the Christchurch Colf Club. It’s a long par-5 with out of bounds on the right hand side all the way to the green and the end also features out of bounds to the left of the green creating one of the narrowest approach shots on the course. The green itself presents a challenge – with a two-metre elevation and false front, unlucky golfers will find the ball rolling back to their feet if not precise with the third shot. To add to the challenges, Christchurch’s prevailing easterly wind makes an already difficult hole even longer with a strong shot into the wind off the tee and down the fairway. Anthony’s advice – you’ll need a precision game with the right club selection for each shot to score well on this hole.

While Augustine Fong, a local golfer, won the Ladies A Division with a +4 in the second round and also won the Golf & Gourmet Hole-in-One Ladies nearest the pin.
Club. President Jacques Coulson, and Club Captain George Geupy worked tirelessly to ensure everything went smoothly. New innovations at this year’s tournament included a Pro vs Amateur 9-hole exhibition, with past European Tour player Jean Louis Guepy and local golf pro Gianne Sacilloto joined with amateurs Gordon Claney and Ian Frost to show the crowd golf shots us normal folk simply dream of.
The friendly atmosphere, wonderful food and camaraderie certainly make this an event to note in any golfer’s diary. The course is owned and operated privately by Dino Sacilloto and his family, in conjunction with the La Ouenghi Golf
The La Ouenghi Club also introduced a hole-in-one event after competition play where all players could try their luck, with the prize (sponsored by Golf & Gourmet) a Murray River Magic trip during 2018. The golf was good but the major prize

However it should be noted that Jean Marie Duffau from the Port Vila Club, Vanuatu did make an Ace on the last day of the tournament, and then did it again two days later at Tina, a course in Noumea, that features two overocean carries. Another innovation was a putting competition where teams of two Senior Open players competed against teams of two local juniors. The juniors won the prizes hands down. Gianni runs a junior program in this small, but community-minded, operation that would be the envy of many Australian clubs. It was a delight to see these young people so dedicated

hat makes Pebble Beach special is its unrivalled location, wound around cliffs overlooking the thundering Pacific Ocean, serenaded by the roar of waves crashing on rocks beneath. “If I had only one more round to play, I would choose to play at Pebble Beach,” says legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus. “I loved this course from the first time I saw it. It’s possibly the best in the world.” Jack knows a good course when he sees one, so who could argue with him? With holes like the par-three 7th, which at 106-yards rivals even the Postage Stamp at Royal Troon and the 17th at TPC Sawgrass, for the title of golf’s most famous short hole, Pebble Beach has the power to awe and inspire. The walk up the 18th hole is second only to that of the final hole of the Old Course at St Andrews, which resounds with history and the whisper of golf’s greatest triumphs.

Stunning golf in historic Sri Lanka
of the Cinnamon Group but including the very special Shangri La Resort & Spa at Hambantota and a traditional hills Guesthouse Hotel at Nuwara Eliya. Transport is provided by private air conditioned coach with a local English speaking guide.
S
ri Lanka is a land of contrasts which many visitors find difficult to comprehend. Having been decimated by 27 years of civil war the nation is now very definitely on the front foot. Industry is coming back to the island nation, tourism is projected to deliver prosperity to many parts of its diverse population and new hotels are being built. The people of Sri Lanka welcome visitors, they will always assist with directions, offer advice on places to visit, local festivals and especially about cricket. Golf & Gourmet founder, Fred Sparksman recently visited Sri Lanka as part of a delegation from the International Association of Golf Tour
Operators and has designed a tour which visits the four major golf courses, but includes history, culture, nature and time to explore. Golf in Sri Lanka stems from the days of the “Britishers”, a colloquial term for the days of the Raj, where the servicemen built golf courses for their rest and recreation. Nuwara Eliya set among tea plantations in the Central Highlands was Founded in 1895 by a soldier of the Gordon Highlanders and still maintains many of the traditions of that era. Royal Colombo is the second-oldest Royal Golf Club outside the British Isles opened by Governor Sir Joseph West Ridgeway over 130 years ago. Both courses offer caddies rather than carts, following tradition of the 19th century. Newer courses, like
Victoria, near the city of Kandy is set in a rural landscape with changing elevations, expansive wildlife and edged by jungle. A feature is each foursome also has a ball spotter and caddies with a limited supply of carts. The Shangri La Course which, was built after the tsunami, has carts and caddies at this ocean-side location adjacent to the wonderful Shangri La Resort. Dining in Sri Lanka is a special treat. The local curries are more delicate than others of the sub continent and make excellent use of local produce. Often dining is smorgasbord style so all tastes and diets are taken care of and the array of cuisine displayed is stunning. Accommodation is provided in excellent 4.5 or 5 star hotels primarily being part
Non golfers are well catered for with a cooking school, nature walks, Botanical Garden inspections and gemstone and textile shopping and demonstrations all adding to the experiences of Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is known for gemstones including some of the world’s best sapphires, herbs and spices are very much part of daily life with natural remedies explained at a visit to a spice garden. Visit an elephant orphanage and tea plantation as well as The Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, so important to the Buddhist Faith. There is so much more to visiting Sri Lanka, an emerging destination on both the tourism and golfing calendar so join Golf & Gourmet in February 2018 and experience this island nation. As well as the group departure, Golf & Gourmet also offers packages for two or more people to travel on dates of their choice. More: www.golfgourmet.com.au

Social Group - Southern Highlands Tour, Sydney
Recently we organized a tour with Lee at Great Golf Getaways for our group of twenty golfers to South West Sydney and the Southern Highlands. This is one of many that Lee has organised for us over the years, all running perfectly without a hiccup. The Tour included all of our golf, carts, accommodation, breakfasts and a lunch on day one. When we arrived at the courses all the carts were waiting for us and the NTPs were all set out as well. All tour members arrange their payments with Lee which makes the job of the organiser very easy. It is Lee’s initiative that has helped us on many occasions, like organising early breakfast and giving suggested travel times. We look forward to many more tours with Great Golf Getaways. -- D. Grunseit (Nostril Social Club, Sydney)
Corporate Group Tour – Tasmania
International Visitors Mornington Peninsula Tour, Victoria We would certainly recommend GGG to anyone planning a golfing trip. On the golf side, the courses arranged for us were excellent and our golfing experiences were top notch. Your efforts and consideration when we had to make so many changes went above and beyond and we are most appreciative of your efforts. It was wonderful to meet you personally and have the contact with you throughout. Your dining recommendations were great. But I do have to say that it is you, personally, who made the whole process so comfortable, it is easy when you feel like you are dealing with a friend. Thank you again, I am sure we will be back. --Pat & Mary (New Zealand)
Hi Lee, What a buzz. Even with our two-hour delay in flying out of Sydney the boys had a great three days and enjoyed every aspect of the trip. From the golf to the accommodation to the great meals and easy transfers everything ran so smoothly. Two of the new players have come back to me and stated that they had been on a number of golf trips but this one by far was the best in all aspects and could not believe the value for money that they received. Thank you for organising the trip, really appreciated. --G Payne (Sydney) Contact Great Golf Getaways to assist you in planning your next tour and enjoy a hassle-free and memorable golfing experience.
