Ocean Dunes unveils six new holes O cean Dunes on King Island last month opened six brandnew holes on the back nine to complement its front nine, which has been enjoyed by golfers from all over the world since October. The unveiling of the back nine holes will now give golfers the opportunity to play 18 holes on the spectacular coastal course. The stunning par-three tenth, which plays across 3 Rivers Bay, the 11th, 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th holes will all be available for play. Golfers will have the option of playing the three-hole loop of the 10th, 17th & 18th for a second time from different tees. The recent purchase and upgrade of the King Island Hotel—just 5 minutes from the course—by Ocean Dunes provides golfers and other visitors with a comfortable and convenient place to dine and bed down after a day’s golf or touring the Island. A golfer’s lounge, where players can relax with a beer or glass of wine in front of an open fire, will be a highlight of the revamped hotel. Graeme Grant, who has lived on King Island since 2013 designing and building the golf course, has been fighting the

The new 10th and 11th at Ocean Dunes elements for the past year with record low rainfall delaying plans to open the entire course in February. He is optimistic that, once open, golfers will be buoyed by the course’s condition, strategy and spectacle. “Even though we’ve had drought conditions to deal with, our greens, tees and green surrounds have remained in excellent condition and the response to the course from players has remained extremely positive,” Grant said. “A day of rain recently yielded 50 millimetres, which has brought about a remarkable recovery in the fine fescue fairways.” “What we’ve experienced has been much the same as the conditions leading up to The Open Championship every so often. It reminds me of Hoylake in 2006 where Tiger Woods said it was ‘golf as
it was meant to be played’, which is in tune with nature. Firm, fast conditions will always be part of Ocean Dunes and will set the scene for imaginative shot making.” “The exciting thing for us now is that we think the last two holes to be constructed, the 13th and 14th, are probably two of the most spectacular holes we have. The 13th is a drivable par-four and the 14th is a drop par-three of 110 metres, which in some winds might require a knockdown long iron.” Long-established air touring company Air Adventure (www.airadventure.com. au) operates charter flights to King Island, while Golf & Gourmet (www.golfgourmet.com.au) offer specialised tour packages.

Wrest Point International Masters in Hobart is well known as Australia’s best ‘week of golf’. The four-round tournament is played at both Royal Hobart and Tasmania golf clubs. Befitting its royal tag, Royal Hobart was in magnificent condition. Built on a bluff, Tasmania Golf Club has milliondollar views from most tees and the signature 3rd hole is reminiscent of the famed 18th hole at Pebble Beach.
There are 15 divisions based on age and handicap and playing with golfers your own age and standard is among the drawcards. All golfers play stableford with A grade golfers also eligible to compete for the best gross. Coolangatta Tweed’s Sue Christensen and Adrienne Naismith from Nudgee both scored 132 stableford points, the best of all the ladies. Melissa Weber from Redcliffe in Queensland carded a 72-hole total of 331 to edge out
In the men’s divisions, no player averaged better than their handicap for the four days. Mike Rayner from WA and Eric Johnson from Keperra (QLD) both scored 142 points to win their respective divisions. John O’Mara (Tasmania) Michael Tomlinson (Helensvale) both with 141 points and Glen Cahill (Foxhills) 140 points scored consistently to win their divisions. Known for its fun and festive
atmosphere, the 16th annual tournament got underway with a welcome dinner serving up fresh Tasmanian oysters and salmon and entertainment from comedy ventriloquist Darren Carr. With 90% of event participants choosing to stay at Wrest Point, the event is very social. At the end of each day’s play, golfers and partners convene for 19th Hole festivities and golf presentations. Away from the golf courses, Hobart International Tennis, the MONA museum and dining at Salamanca were popular activities. Straight after the Wrest Point Masters is the Barnbougle 4 Ball Challenge with a capacity field of 90 golfers again in attendance. Located on the north eastern
tip of Tasmania, Barnbougle is exposed to the elements and can serve up brutal winds, however for the fourth straight year players have been treated to benign conditions. Played as a team of two, the fourround tournament comprises best ball, ambrose and the final round of stableford aggregate event sets up for changes to the leaderboard. Maroochydore’s John and Lesley Gilbert finished half a shot ahead of Burleigh’s Bernie Dooney and Lyn Bansgrove to win the Mixed A grade. Janee and Travis Young from Oatlands in NSW won the Mixed B division. Brisbane’s Colin Wisemantel and Phil Gracie proved too strong in the Men’s Division while Latrobe’s Jenny Brooks final
round hole-in-one proved the difference in helping her and Gwen Clutterbuck (Oxley) hold off Janet Holland (Cronulla) and Leona Stewart (Virginia).
knights. The white team came from the clouds to secure victory, while team purple who lead into the final round finished last.
Morning golf followed by relaxing afternoons is the order of play at Barnbougle. A winery tour, tastings and a decadent lunch in the underground wine cellars at Pipers Brook Vineyard is a highlight of the trip.
Visit www.gogolfing.net.au to view the complete results for both tournaments and event photos.
There is also a novel team event where each pairing is placed in a team of 14 players. Teams are assigned a colour and encouraged to dress in that colour for the opening night. Weird and wonderful outfits have become a tradition and this year was no exception with green leprechauns, blue pencils and white
January is a great time to visit Tasmania. Long sunny days with temperatures in the mid 20’s is perfect for discovering the Apple Isle’s natural beauty, the great outdoors and of course its golf courses -- more courses per capita than any other state. The tradition continues in 2017 with the Wrest Point International Masters to run 22 to 27 January and Barnbougle 4 Ball from 28 January to 3 February 2017. •

TEE off on a ‘Remarkable’ New Zealand golf tour
Queenstown Golf Club
I
t’s the little things that make a big difference in golf. Whether it’s choosing a certain grip for your putter, the right ball for your swing speed or the best coach to hone your skills. The same applies when it comes to golf travel. Little things matter, and dealing with a ground-based tour agent means you get local information first hand. Somebody on the other end of the phone that you can trust to get things done when you’re trying to organise a party of people and ensure you get to see the best of what NZ has to

offer, whether it’s golf courses, restaurants or sightseeing. Remarkable Golf Tours (RGT) was established in Queenstown in 2007 to provide a range of golf services for visitors to New Zealand and have arranged tours for thousands of golfers from all corners of the globe. Starting with one vehicle for running daily transfers between local hotels and golf courses, RGT have expanded their vehicle fleet to cater to a range of group sizes from couples to large touring parties. Regardless of party size,
the service remains focussed on the finer details of planning that ensure a seamless golf trip. Naturally, choosing a great destination to golf in is a pretty important choice to make and when it comes to New Zealand, it simply doesn’t get better than Queenstown. The views alone are worth the airfare and the courses showcase the scenery beautifully. Whether it’s the sweeping views of Queenstown Bay from Queenstown Golf Club, The Remarkables Mountain range and Lake Wakatipu
from Jacks Point or the hilly surrounds of Arrowtown from The Hills, Millbrook or Arrowtown Golf Club, golfers have always got great views to take in. Aside from the views, it’s the also changes in style of each course that really intrigues. Each course feels very different than the last and golfers won’t feel like they play two courses even remotely similar in Queenstown. There are plenty of golf destinations that boast more courses but the variety from one to the next and the varying challenges sees groups returning to Queenstown year after year to rediscover what makes it so special for golfing. There are certainly standout courses like Jacks Point that really inspire with its stunning views and rugged, natural beauty but each course has its own charm and often the club courses silently impress even the golfing purists. Another attraction is the world-class food and wine on offer, an area where Queenstown continues to raise the bar year upon year. Central Otago established itself as a premier Pinot Noir producing region years ago but has now regarded as one of NZ’s top destinations for dining. Everything from Asian street-style food to fine NZ meats, seafood and hearty pub meals are on offer and visitors would be disappointed to find a meal less than excellent wherever they go in Queenstown. However large or small your group is, take the opportunity to contact Remarkable Golf Tours to see what they can offer you for a memorable golf trip to New Zealand. Bathurst Golf Club
The many colours of the
NSW Central West
From Mudgee to Wellington, to Orange, Bathurst and Parkes, The NSW’s Central Western region boasts some of the country’s finest regional golf courses and world-class wineries. This month, we explore this amazing region from a golfer’s and traveller’s perspective.
Bathurst Golf Club
One of the jewels in the crown of the Central West, The Bathurst Golf Course is just 2.5 hours from Sydney and 3.5 hours from Canberra. The club boasts an 18-hole championship course that has previously hosted a NSW Open, Australian Junior Championships and interstate series as well as numerous state and regional events. The course features smallish, but lightning-fast greens coupled with lush South African and Santa Ana
couch fairways that meander through a beautiful tree-lined setting framed by strategic creeks and dams. The course provides a pleasant experience for the social golfer from the forward tees, but with a slope rating of 136 from the back tees even the most discerning golfer will enjoy the challenge provided.
AAA-rated professional Matthew Barrett can organise your booking and any extras you may need on the day. The club has a fully-licensed bar and features the Birdie & Eagle Bistro that is open for lunch 7 days a week and dinner from Wednesday
to Saturday. Golfing and food packages can be tailored to your group’s needs.
While in Bathurst, drive around the world famous Mt Panorama race track or visit one of the emerging local wineries. The club can also put you in touch with the Bathurst Motor Inn, The Governor Macquarie Motor Inn, Charlotte St apartments or the Big 4 tourist park for any accommodation needs while you are in town. Membership is open and convenient payment options including monthly direct debits are on offer.

Parkes Golf Club With many clubs to choose from along NSW’s famed Newell Highway, the undulating par-71 Parkes Golf Club is one of the best of the bunch. With five par-3s, nine par-4s and four par-5s, all of which provide different challenges from tee to green, every club
in your bag will get a workout. The par-5s at Parkes are the feature of the club, ranging from 474 to 522 metres. The 522m 16th, for example, requires a long drive to split the trees, and a good degree of course management. But there are many holes that stand out at Parkes, especially the opening trio. The 190m par-3 first runs from an elevated tee to a medium-sized green that is protected by two large trees in front. The 475m par-5 second tempts players to go for the green in two towards a green that has ‘dead’ ground for the last 30 metres. The 389m par-4 third is rated number 2 on the course, but is generally regarded as the hardest hole with a slight dogleg to the left from its championship plates to an uphill, undulating green. The fairway is well protected by trees on both sides.
All three form part of a strong front-nine that is generally in its pinnacle condition during the autumn and spring weather. The back-nine features a pair of contrasting par-3s: The 148m 11th, which has two bunkers guarding the green in front, and the 160m 15th—which is the toughest par-3 on the course. The kikuyu grass fairways at Parkes are very lush, and players will need to adjust their game to account for less run. Meanwhile, the smallish greens on the course demand accurate shotmaking to ensure a good score. Good guidance: Kieran at the famed 13th hole
By BILL COLHOUN
A
TRIP to the US Masters at Augusta is on the must-do list of every golfer, so to go with the friendly and experienced Great Events Tours, hosted by Aussie PGA pro Kieran McMahon, is literally the dream come true. This is a once-in-a-lifetime trip, so choosing a tour operator that offers a fully-hosted tour, limited number of tour members and guaranteed tickets, is a decision not to be taken lightly. McMahon, an award-winning golf coach and Australian PGA Member, has been hosting golf tours for the past 15 years, including the past four US Masters. These unique tours of the US Masters are limited (a maximum of 12 tour attendees in 2015) and a stack of testimonials to attest its success. “The 2015 Masters Tour exceeded all

my expectations,” says Robert (2015 Tour). “Great Events were ultra-professional in booking my tour and Kieran was ultraprofessional in delivering it. The 10-day tour gave me time to relax in luxury before the high energy of the Masters week. Watching Jordan Spieth up close marching to victory at the most beautiful course I could ever imagine still gives me goosebumps.”

Great Events, Australia’s leading sports tour operator for over 30 years, gives clients the confidence to book tours domestically and internationally, knowing they are in experienced hands to enjoy the sports adventure of a lifetime.
The seven or 10-day Great Events Masters Tour coordinates the perfect mix of the world’s best sporting event with the experience of southern hospitality.
Masters Tour clients benefit from McMahon’s intimate knowledge of the quirky conditions for visitors to Augusta. He will not only show you how to get a front-row “reserved” seat at key holes but also host private access to quality food and

It is succinctly summed up by McMahon, when he says: “I will host you from the Airport, to the best viewing points on Augusta National, guide your swing as you play some of the best local private courses and even show you the outstanding restaurants and nightspots as Augusta comes alive Masters week.”
McMahon is on hand from the time you arrive at the Airport to escort you to your accommodation at the four-star Home2suites by Hilton – only 10 minutes from Augusta National, to meet tour members, relax and soak up the true atmosphere of the Masters. On Tuesday it’s on course for a Masters
practice day, so take a camera and get photos of your favourite players. Kieran will give you a tour of the 18 holes pointing out the best spectator positions and the odd historical facts and figures.
Wednesday is the Par-3 Tournament and Practice Day. Watch the world’s best players fine-tune their game on course, and try to skip their golf ball across the lake at the famous 16th hole. See golf’s legends like Nicklaus, Palmer and Player with other past champions and favourites in a relaxed and fun environment. On Thursday, inspired by your taste of the Masters, it’s golf at Woodside Plantation – just over the river in South Carolina. Warm up on the range or enjoy a short-game clinic with Kieran prior to play. Test your game among the pines, lakes and native flora on this award-winning course. Then a gourmet lunch in the clubhouse and back to the hotel to watch round one of the Masters.

Bali’s golfing treasures runs all along the right. The green drops away from left front to right rear, has a very narrow opening and is defended on the right by a massive bunker that extends 35 metres back down the right side of the fairway and on the left by another bunker.
The par-3 sixth is aptly named The Bunker because it’s an “island green” surrounded by sand. At 163m off the back tee box, careful club selection is paramount but once on the green your job is not over as the many undulations will require concentration to get your putt close to the hole. Holes 14, 15 and 16 have been dubbed Bali’s own version of “Amen Corner”.

Over the past few months, Inside Golf has featured some of the top Bali courses and activities for golfers and their partners to explore.
A quick glance at the limestone cliffs, with its dramatic drop to the surf and beach below, is enough to throw any new visitor into a state of geographical shock.
One of our favourite courses is New Kuta Golf Resort on the island’s southwest rim.
The layout ranks among Asia’s best and most imposing courtesy of its long narrow undulating fairways, challenging rough and testing greens.

The trio of holes follow the cliff’s edge some 65 metres above the pounding surf where surfers bob in the ocean like corks as they await the next big wave. You’ll have a difficult time forgetting the par-3 15th – the course’s signature hole. It’s here where golfers take advantage of the “halfway house” to refresh and take in the spectacular views of the sweeping bay.
If you haven’t warmed up by the time you reach the 523m par-5 second hole, you will have by the time you finish playing this demanding hole, which weaves left to right and is undulating.
