G
OING to Bali to play golf can offer a special blend of culture, peace, quiet, simplicity, relaxation, gourmet living and more. Today, golfers from around the globe are marvelling at the tremendous value golfing holiday opportunities available. Most golf resorts have on-site accommodation or there are first-class hotels and resorts within walking distance. Now is an ideal time to starting planning your golfing holiday to Bali (mid-May to mid-October is the ideal time to play golf there). Inside Golf recently travelled to Bali, also known as the Land of the Gods, as your forecaddie to check out the golf scene. WHEN visiting Bali, a must play-andstay destination is the Pan Pacific Nirwana Bali Resort on Bali’s southwest coast. Built atop a sheer cliff along a sweeping coastline, the five-star accommodation offers breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean and Tanah Lot framed by a spectacular panorama of endless sea. Opened in 1997, the resort features an award-winning Greg Norman-designed championship golf course. Pan Pacific Nirwana Bali Resort offers a choice of outstanding amenities 8

combined with discrete and understated service.
Whether the wind is blowing or not, this is a challenging golf course.
With a wide range of exquisite Balinese rooms, specialty suites and exclusive villas, leisurely pursuits and pampering services are available at your doorstep.
From the Shark tees, the course stretches to 6220 metres (slope rating 146) and a manageable 5768m (slope 142) off the championship tees. From the women’s tees, it’s 4716m (slope 136).
The Inside Golf team spent a night at the resort and indulged in a sundowner followed by a sumptuous meal at Driftwood Restaurant – one of a number of spectacular eateries on offer. The resort is impressive and the course has improved over the past six months courtesy of new course superintendent Mike Mckenna. His agronomy experience stretches over 18 years and in seven countries. Since arriving from India in July last year, Mckenna has worked feverously to bring the course back to its original design. Nirwana Bail Golf Club is unique as the layout takes golfers on a roller-coaster ride through rice-terraced valleys, across streams, through jungle, over a beach and along stunning ocean cliffs. Nirwana Bali Golf Club is famous for its signature seventh hole – a dramatic par-3 over an ocean inlet to a well-guarded green with a distracting view of the famous Tanah Lot Temple resting on the rocky outcrop in the ocean. It’s a beauty, but the golf course is much more than a one-hole wonder. It is one of the most picturesque golf courses ever built in Asia.
The closing three holes are among the strongest in Bali as all have narrow streams guarding the approach. There is little doubt this is one of the most interesting and challenging golf courses. Add to this a 2500sqm Balinese-styled clubhouse with restaurant, locker room and pro shop facilities, Nirwana Bali is a truly top-class golfing experience. Nirwana Bali Golf Club Phone: +62 361 815 900 www.nirwanabaligolf.com Green fees: $125USD for Pan Pacific guests. $185USD (weekdays) and $195USD (weekend) for visiting golfers. Handara Golf & Resort Bali, a spectacular Peter Thomson, Mike Wolveridge and Ronald Fream designed golf course, is located in the lush central highlands. Situated 1400m above sea level, the picturesque surroundings give the resort an unrivalled backdrop of clear blue water lakes and equatorial rainforests. Little wonder it’s an award-winning golf getaway that attracts golfers from around the world. It’s been recognised as one of Asia’s most iconic courses and was ranked among the top-50 greatest golf courses in the world by an American magazine. In 2015, it won the best golf hotel in Indonesia by World Golf Awards. One of the resort’s unique characteristics is the year-round coolness of the fresh mountain air (14-24 °C), which makes for a comfortable round of golf. As for degree of difficulty, the course is a true test from the 6385m championship tees. From the men’s tees (5858m) and the women’s tees (5210m), it’s much more golfer friendly. The course has many memorable and demanding holes including the 398m par-4 third (index 1), which requires careful planning. The hole doglegs right and has a stream down the right that crosses and kisses the

fairway at driving distance. This hole is a test even for the best players. Another memorable hole is the 487m par-5 15th. A bunker in the heart of the fairway is modelled on the famous Principal’s Nose on the 16th of the Old Course at St Andrews. The 390m par-4 16th plays uphill to a difficult green while locals believe the 517m par-5 18th hole is the best finishing hole in Bali. Because of its tree-lined fairways, the parkland course requires accuracy from tee to green. The greens have subtle breaks and it’s important to try to keep the ball under the hole. What’s nice about Handara Golf and Resort Bali is that the golf course has an intimate charm that gives the feeling you have the place to yourself as each fairway and green is independent of each other. It’s a cart-only course and, as one of the oldest courses in Indonesia, the caddies come with plenty of experience. The comfortable clubhouse offers men’s and women’s locker rooms and sauna. A unique large Japanese bath occupies the men’s locker room. After a round, golfers can enjoy a quiet beverage on the deck overlooking the range and 18th hole. The Golf Café is open 6am-6pm. Kamandalu Restaurant offers Indonesian and international cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner and is open

holes” because there are waste bunkers running from tee to green. These holes have gently sculptured fairways set amongst a mature coconut grove where some palms, reaching as high as 35m, provide vertical definition to the holes. The 17th and 18th holes are eye-popping. The 17th is a par-3 (167m from the championship tee) to an island green reminiscent of the 17th at TPC Sawgrass in Florida. Usually, there’s plenty of discussion, banter and club swapping on the tee courtesy of the prevailing breeze off the ocean.
Bali National Golf Resort DAZZLING, striking and spectacular are just some of the words used to describe the Bali National Golf Resort. The resort certainly is impressive and one quickly runs out of superlatives when describing the facility. Originally designed in the late 1980s by Robin Nelson and Rodney Wright, the golf course underwent a major facelift in 2012. The new-look layout, which was crafted by Nelson Haworth Golf Course Architects, reopened in March 2014 to rave reviews and awards and the resort celebrated its second anniversary in grand style. “For Bali National, it’s been a fantastic journey over the past two years with a
plethora of accolades included being voted the third best-renovated course worldwide 2015, second best golf course in Indonesia 2016, third best clubhouse in Asia Pacific 2016 and top-10 best golf resort in Asia Pacific 2016,” general manager Mark Holland said. One of the major changes to the golf course was a switch in grasses away from 328 Bermuda to new paspalum fairways and tees and TifEagle greens. There isn’t a blade of grass out of place and the ball sits beautifully atop the grass inviting a clean strike. This scenic 6552m championship course features three distinctive environmental settings.
Creeks, canyons, cascading waterfalls, verdant native vegetation and even a temple complement the picturesque landscape. Another standout feature is the kaleidoscope of colour produced by the magnificent trees, garden shrubbery and flowers. The first part of the course plays inland, uphill and then down through tropical vegetation. The first nine holes unveil panoramic views of Nusa Dua, the Indian Ocean and distant islands and volcanoes. Things change noticeably on the back nine. Holes 10 to 16 are known as “bunker
The 18th doglegs left around a lake and water cross the fairway in front of the green. A waste bunker lines the water down the left. Make par on this picturesque finishing hole and you’ll be well satisfied as you head to the clubhouse for a well-earned beverage. At Bali National Golf Resort, the fairways are generous, even on the back nine where waste bunkers take up plenty of real estate. The other nice thing about the golf course is it’s not a ball thief. To lose a ball, you have to hit a very ordinary tee or approach shot. You must play this fabulous course and relax in its equally attractive Balinese yet ultra-modern clubhouse with wellappointed locker rooms, pro shop, Golfers’ Restaurant and Terrace overlooking the 18th green.

THERE is a new kid on the block in Bali and it’s uniquely different. The “block” in this instance is on the most southern coastline along dramatic cliffs rising from the Indian Ocean and the “kid” is Bukit Pandawa Golf & Country Club. What’s different is Bukit Pandawa G&CC is an 18-hole, championship par-3 golf course and it’s next to the scenic beaches on the Bukit peninsula. Built atop the limestone landscape, Bukit Pandawa G&CC weaves its way from elevated ridges to ocean cliff edges and features spectacular views over the Indian Ocean. capital, embraced the contours and characteristics of a site that was rife with rock outcroppings, architectural ruins and sea views. Indeed, the ocean is visible from 15 holes and many have architectural ruins as a backdrop. Waterfalls, lakes or terraced rice paddies complement other holes and all are subject to the wind. “When the breeze is up, and it almost always is, there’s a good chance you’ll use every club in the bag – even driver,” said Stephen Banks, general manager of Bukit Pandawa G&CC. One standout hole is the 135m 13th, which is framed by three bunkers and features curved stonewalls in the foreground and a traditional Balinese kulkul tower in the background. Wall-to-wall Seashore Paspalum grass ensures excellent year-round playing conditions. The 18 par-3 holes play from 107 to 223m and, collectively, stretch to 2767m from the back tees. Given how short the par-54 layout is compared to standard 18-hole setups, it’s ideal for short-stay visitors and families. “So often, a golfer might pass on the opportunity to play on vacation or during a business trip because it can burn a large portion of the day,” Banks said. “But here, that’s not an issue. A round takes no more than a couple hours to complete.” To round out the total golf experience, a 3000sq/m clubhouse inspired by the ancient temples and towers of Bali has been constructed. The exclusive venue also features a swimming pool, a fully-stocked pro shop and restaurant/café with an upstairs perch, which offers spectacular views of the ocean and the golf course.

SITUATED 16 kilometres from the airport, the Bali Beach Golf Course is receiving lots of attention these days, particularly with the influx of visiting golfers looking for a departure from the norm. For example, they have something called Beer on the Green (that must appeal to Australians, right?) Then there is sunset golf where you pay to play nine holes, but can play as many as you can before the light fades. The well laid-out nine-hole golf course has seven par-4s, one par-5 and one par-3 and is set in an environment of mature trees and water features. In recent years, it’s been given a facelift with the introduction of lakes, mounding and features including newly designed and constructed greens all of which add to the aesthetic beauty of the layout.
Other amenities on the property include a practice chipping and putting green, smaller snack shacks between holes and spacious men’s and women’s locker rooms
The greens, which are well bunkered, provide a good putting surface without severe undulations, however, there are a few subtle breaks to keep the golfers honest.
Located just 10 minutes from Nusa Dua and 45 minutes from Denpasar International Airport, the first-class golf course is centrally located among
There is another invisible hazard – the wind. It does come into play, especially on the par-3 2nd hole where club selection is crucial.
The Bali Beach Golf Course certainly challenges golfers of all skill levels. It provides golfers with enough variety and challenges to enjoy a game of golf without leaving you frustrated. For high handicappers, there are plenty of bailout options and lay-up areas to ensure you stay out of trouble. Of course, the better player will need to be sharp, creative and accurate in order to play to his or handicap. At Bali Beach Golf Course, there is a team of well-trained caddies available to help you negotiate your way around the golf course. The pro shop has a wide range of top brand golf equipment and accessories. After a round, golfers can retreat to the luxurious male and female locker rooms before heading for the Sector Bar, restaurant or lounge. The restaurant’s extensive menu offers a selection of Western and Asian cuisine and has magnificent views overlooking the course. The verandah, too, is a popular spot for golfers to meet before tee off or after the round. Attached to the golf course is the practice green – a wide, grassy area that provides additional space of any type of event. It’s the perfect spot for weddings, gala dinners and special functions and it can cater for up to 2000 guests. Bali Beach Golf Course offers stay-andplay packages as well. BALI’S MUST PLAY GOLF COURSE
Bukit Pandawa Golf & Country Club Opened in October 2016, Bukit Pandawa Golf & Country Club is the latest addition to Bali’s growing collection of world-class golf courses. Situated on a limestone cliff-top overlooking the world-famous surf breaks of Bukit Peninsula, the singular venue offers 18 championship caliber par-3 golf holes, many of which are back-dropped by rustic architectural relics and spectacular views of the Indian Ocean, with a clubhouse inspired by the many grand temples Bali is renowned for. The club is the centerpiece of an expansive development that will eventually include several 5-star hotels, including a Waldorf Astoria, Mandarin Oriental and Swissôtel.

The courses all offer special day membership packages that showcase not only their golf course, but most importantly their club’s sense of community and great kiwi hospitality. Offerings are not limited to the resort or city courses. There are options from the championship resort style of Clearwater Golf Club, the historic Christchurch Golf Club, recently remodelled Harewood and Russley courses to the more rural retreat of Methven or Hororata. Each package is a little bit unique and might include a farm experience, jet boat trips, meals or a few beverages. All packages offered unlimited golf on the chosen day as a base item. The central booking system ensures that visitors are met and greeted like long lost club members. This is not a green fee deal service. Clearwater Golf Club – Christchurch
Christchurch and CANGOLF New Zealand is the most popular international destination for Australian golfers and the Canterbury region has the most golf courses in the country. With the Christchurch International Airport having direct flights from most major Australian cities on a choice of carriers it makes sense for visitors to consider Christchurch when planning your next golf adventure. Of course, one problem golfers face
everywhere is securing a sequence of tee times at a selection of courses over a range of dates to suit their tour schedule. This inevitably involves the group leader in multiple phone calls, a trail of emails and a lot of frustration. Many choose to use an agency but this can prove time consuming. When that special airfare reaches your mailbox do you risk making a booking and then finding everything is booked for a tournament, or maintenance?
With these thoughts in mind the major golf courses in Christchurch city, along with the amazing rural clubs of the Canterbury region have joined forces and worked together to create a single booking site for visitors who can instantly secure a tee time at multiple courses rather than having to rely on a trail of emails or phone calls. The new CANGOLF ™ service is web based (with phone assistance if required) and can be accessed at www.cangolf.nz .
If you’ve been delegated the task of organising your new group golf trip then CANGOLF ™ could be your saviour. Canterbury is spectacular from the Southern Alps to the ocean with some of the country’s best wineries on the doorstep as an added benefit. A central office is available as a backup for those who prefer to deal over the phone, and the office team can also assist with suggestions on transport and accommodation options. The service will be progressively upgraded during 2017 as more course offerings are created. The mighty The signature 5th hole at Murray Downs Golf & Country Club
If you love high-quality golf in an absolutely serene setting, then Murray Downs Golf and Country Club, near Swan Hill, is golf at its absolute best. Widely acclaimed by golfers as the Murray River’s finest course, Murray Downs has always been a favourite of the Inside Golf team.
Murray Downs
M
urray Downs Golf and Country Club proudly boasts The Number 1 Golf Course on the Murray River. Located 5 minutes over the bridge from Swan Hill on the New South Wales side, it should be number 1 on your golf course bucket list. The course has been consistently voted in the top resort courses around Australia and a previous winner of the Victorian PGA course of the year. Nationally, it is in the Top 50 Courses within Australia and is one of the country’s finest resort courses. The 6197m course is in striking contrast to the spectacular surrounding Mallee plains. It’s both beautiful and challenging, with a dramatic backdrop of river gums, artfully formed lakes and some very tricky signature holes, notably the par-3 5th, featuring a long water carry over the green, making it difficult for those who choose to risk it and hit straight for the green. 22

Tee times are available seven days a week, with services including golf carts, pro shop, equipment hire and a beverage cart for that welcome break.
The Resort The Murray Downs Resort is located opposite the 16th fairway allowing you to be out your door and on the first tee within minutes.
