Downed Line Safety Tips

When driving, obstacles in the road can make conditions hazardous. It is important to always keep a close eye on the road, especially if you spot a downed line. When a power line breaks, falls and comes in contact with the ground, it can be deadly. Always assume a downed power line is live and avoid it and anything that comes in contact with it.

KNOW THE FACTS

• Downed power lines can energize the ground up to 35 feet away!

• Never drive over downed power lines or through water that might be in contact with them. The water will likely be energized.

• If you see a downed power line, call 911 immediately to report it. They will inform the appropriate utility.

KNOW

WHAT

TO DO

If your vehicle comes in contact with a downed power line while you are inside, stay in the car. Remain calm and call 911. Do not touch the vehicle's frame or any other metal surface.

IF THE VEHICLE CATCHES FIRE:

Open the door without touching the metal door frame

Jump out of the vehicle with both feet together so both feet land at the same time

Do not walk! Shuffle away carefully so that both feet are in constant contact with each other and with the ground.
