EFFICIENCY

USE DRYER BALLS

Using wool or rubber balls for your dryer can make your clothes dry faster by separating them and allowing more air to circulate. Wool balls can even soak up some moisture, which can cut down on drying time and save energy.

Ingredients:

2 cloves garlic

1 yellow onion

2 tbsp. olive oil

1 lb. ground beef

Pumpkin Chili

1 15oz. can kidney beans, drained

1 15oz. can black beans, drained

1 15oz. can petite diced tomatoes

1 15oz. can pumpkin purée

Directions:

1/2 6oz. can tomato paste

2 cups water

1 tbsp. chili powder

1/2 tsp. smoked paprika

1 tsp. ground cumin

1/4 tsp. garlic powder

1/2 tsp. onion powder

1/4 tsp. black pepper

Mince the garlic, dice the onion and add to a large pot with olive oil. Sauté over medium heat until the onions are tender (about 5 minutes). Add ground beef and continue to cook until the beef is browned and cooked through. Add the kidney beans, black beans, diced tomatoes, puréed pumpkin, tomato paste, water, chili powder, smoked paprika, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, pepper, and salt to the pot. Stir to combine. Place lid on top of the pot and allow the chili to simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Give the chili a taste and add salt if needed. Serve hot with your favorite toppings.

WHAT ARE THE SEVEN COOPERATIVE PRINCIPLES?

VOLUNTARY AND OPEN MEMBERSHIP

Cooperatives are voluntary organizations, open to all people able to use its services and willing to accept the responsibilities of membership, without gender, social, racial, political or religious discrimination.

DEMOCRATIC MEMBER CONTROL

Co-ops are controlled by their members — those who buy the goods or use the services of the co-op — who actively participate in setting policies and making decisions.

MEMBERS ECONOMIC PARTICIPATION

Members contribute equally to, and control, the capital of the cooperative. This benefits members in proportion to the business they conduct with the cooperative rather than on the capital invested.

AUTONOMY AND INDEPENDENCE

Cooperatives are autonomous, self-help organizations controlled by their members. If the co-op enters into agreements with other organizations or raises capital from external sources, it is done so based on terms that ensure control by the members and maintains the co-op’s autonomy.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND INFORMATION

Cooperatives provide education and training for members, trustees, managers and employees so they can contribute effectively to the development of their co-op. Members also inform others about the nature and benefits of cooperatives.

CONCERN FOR COMMUNITY

While focusing on member needs, cooperatives work for the sustainable development of communities through policies and programs accepted by the members.

COOPERATION AMONG COOPERATIVES

Co-ops serve members most effectively and strengthen the cooperative movement by working together through local, national, regional and international structures.

IN THIS YEAR ALONE DIXIE ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE:

Inspired and educated thousands of students through career fairs and safety demonstrations.

Helped raise over $44,000 and 7,000 lbs. of food for Heart of Alabama Food Bank. Provided $48,000 in scholarships for 15 high school students.
