Publishers’ Note The recent Gulf oil spill has reminded us that planet Earth is a fragile place in which to live. We urge you to give to local Gulf families and communities who are making a difference now. Please visit www.gnof.org/ programs/gulf-coast-oil-spillfund/disaster-on-the-gulf-coast/ to help the oil clean-up process. While we have the technology to harness the Earth’s resources, we must also remember to take responsibility for our actions. Like during the Industrial Revolution, we are once again entering into a new era where energy can be controlled on a finer level, and the world is becoming a smaller place in which to live. We urge that everyone from corporate executives, to small business owners, and all who read this message start living more intelligently, more responsibly, more compassionately. In this issue, learn about the Logic of Brainstorms, Communicating with Nature, the art of energetic connection in Tantra, and much more. You, however, may not want to take part in this anti-brain conspiracy. You may see the intimate connection between brainstorms and personal meaning: that to make the meaning you intend to make, you must use more of your brain. I hope that you will vote for brainstorms. Tantra and the Art of Energetic Connecting By Meloney Hudson

nergetic connecting is an event that sparks and maintains an unobstructed flow of energy between two people. In an electrical connection a wire joins two sources and carries a current between them; connecting with another person likewise establishes an energetic bond so that a harmonious, healthy, mutually-empowering flow of personal energy is maintained. Energetic connecting enhances every kind of relationship with joy and love, from an incidental brush with a stranger to your deepest, most intimate partnerships. Energetic connecting could be the key to uniting individuals, communities, and nations.
skill they can learn. Tantra is the ideal source from which we can learn to connect with others. Tantra is based on ecstatic relationships established through the giving and receiving of energy. Though its history is shrouded in mystery, Tantra offers easy and accessible practices that can instantly improve how you connect with others and ultimately become the way you engage in relationships. Tantra and the Art of Energetic Connecting Tantra is a spiritual path that emerged in Asia about 500 CE, though archaeological evidence indicates that some Tantric practices may have been performed by Hindu yogis as early as 2500 BCE. With an amalgam of principles and practices originating in Hinduism and Buddhism, Tantra incorporates postures, breathing, mantras, meditation and other techniques that are used to expand consciousness and clear the body’s energetic pathways to establish a cosmic connection with Divine Spirit for a life of bliss that overflows with peace, joy, and love.
While a sincere smile, engaged eye contact, and an open, welcoming posture initiates a connection, a continuous flow of energetic exchange is the essence of a true connection of depth and meaning. Acknowledgement, acceptance, and appreciation create a vibration that can be sensed by others and often influences the turning on of that vibration in others. Transmitting and receiving this high vibration is the cornerstone of energetic connecting, which ensures a harmonious and meaningful experience. But unlike the Hindu and Buddhist philosophies, Tantra celebrates sexual energy and For some people, for whom energetically uses it as a fundamental tool for enlightenconnecting is an innate talent, their relation- ment. transformation and transcendence. Acknowledged as more than a physical drive to mate and procreate, sexual energy is valued for its life-force benefits and used to vitalize and purify the body to prepare it for spiritual union. Certain techniques harness life-force energy and transform it into healing energy that energizes the cells and dissolves obstructions developed through old wounding or trauma. The result is transcendence above limitation and negativity to higher realms of consciousness, health, and radiant, positive energy. In this clear state, union with the Divine energy of the Highest Power is easily established and maintained. Connecting with other people is a ritual practice for enlightenment, for they also serve as energetic vehicles of the Divine. Clearing the energy body for illumination is a serious endeavor, but there are three simple Tantric practices that you can perform at any time for heavenly connections here on earth: Acknowledging the Divine, Being Love, and Being Fully Present. The rewards include an expanded perspective of the members of our earth family and a soulful way to relate with them. Acknowledging the Divine Every person on the planet—the girl behind the checkout counter, the guy sleeping on the street, your favorite celebrity, your husband www.InsideLookNetwork.com
or wife, your children—is God/dess in the flesh. Tantra teaches us to see the divine in each person. The practice of seeing beyond another person’s clothing, personality and beliefs, and honoring her or him as a unique representative of the Highest Power is the first step to a positive connection and harmonious relating. The yogic greeting used in Tantra is Namaste, “I recognize the divine in you,” expressed with a reverential bow, with hands in prayer formation at the chest. This simple gesture immediately establishes a sacred connection. You don’t need to actually bow to everyone you meet, but a mental Namaste reminds you that the person before you is divine and worthy of honor. When we remember that everyone is divine, we’re less inclined to judge, criticize, or react negatively when our viewpoints and values differ; we’re more likely to appreciate both the ideas and the person delivering them. You wouldn’t get irritated by Buddha or Kwan Yin if they said something that you didn’t agree with. You’d listen, appreciate the value of their heavenly message, and respectfully share your perspective. Acknowledging that you yourself are divine is also essential. We must accept and appreciate ourselves as unique emanations of God/dess. Not until we love and honor ourselves can we truly love others. With self-love, we respect our own ideas and feelings as much as we do others’. We’re empowered to communicate honestly and dismiss the need for outside approval. We can maintain a healthy, clear, and positive energetic exchange with others. To acknowledge the divine in another person, establish conscious eye contact and really look into the eyes of the divine one before you. As windows to the soul, the eyes reveal the essence of a person, and your receptive gaze assures acknowledgement, acceptance, and appreciation. You will thus relate on the divine level to every person you encounter. If everyone were to adopt this practice, one day perhaps the words “foe,” “enemy,” and “bad guy” will disappear from our language. Being Love
pable, loving vibration that uplifts, inspires, and energizes everyone around them. We’re attracted to them because their energy gives us feelings of acknowledgement, acceptance, and appreciation. Their bountiful love inspires our hearts to open and exchange love with them and others. To be love, open your heart and let your love flow with every encounter. Smile and intentionally beam your love energy to strangers, co-workers, and family, then watch them respond in kind. The next time you prepare for a confrontation, take off your boxing gloves and get into the ring with an open heart. Watch the other person’s defenses melt away. Watch him decide to cooperate. Love transcends our emotions and helps us remain in our hearts, enabling us to understand and accept, instead of react and blame. Loving compassion asks us to walk in another’s shoes and empathize with them so that we may offer solutions and support. By being love and a master of the transmission and reception of love, you become an ambassador of harmony and a role model for positive change on the planet.
To be fully present when engaging in conversation, look into the other person’s eyes, listen deeply, and care about what is being said. Practice balance so you can understand the other person’s viewpoint, and rise above judgment and your need to be right. Recognize the words of the other person as divine; after all, these words are being pronounced by the god/dess before you. Let go of your limited perceptions, and find joy in the beauty present in every person you encounter. Practice being fully present and watch conflict and disharmony disappear from your life. Witness the materialization of an abundance of gifts within your relationships. Conclusion
By incorporating these three simple steps from Tantra into your life, you will dramatically shift your paradigm of connecting. Energetic connecting makes every encounter a rich one that enhances your potential to grow as a human and spiritual being. Extraordinary Love The Seven Symphonies Part 2 By Kaushal Aras can render the composition back to us even when we doubt our own melody.” As we navigate through the ebb and flow of life, we need to be willing to accept the gifts from our friends, for doing so provides them with the gift of giving. No matter what level of success we achieve, we won’t do it by ourselves. We need others to help us along the way, and it becomes our loving responsibility to pay it forward. Love itself is never painful, it is meant to open our heart to bliss. It is our expectation that causes pain. Love without conditions. ~ Kaushal Aras Extraordinary Love is not simply an emotion, a feeling, or a body sensation. It is awareness, consciousness, and a way of Being. It is a conscious choice to love without conditions. You love another person simply for the sake of love, and not because of the attributes that they demonstrate, a special circumstance, or to fulfill your needs. One makes an extraordinary choice to love extraordinarily. In the context of everyday living and loving, I’ve observed seven different ways, seven different roles through which we relate to others with extraordinary love. These roles are: parent-child, friend-sibling, student-teacher, lover-beloved, man-community, husbandwife, and self-higher self. In my book, The Seven Symphonies of Extraordinary Love, I provide a blueprint for creating peace within and without. Incorporating this knowledge into our consciousness enables us to flavor every endeavor of life with harmony, peace, and happiness. 1. The Symphony of Unconditional Sacrifice (Parent–Child): Despite how grown up and successful we become, part of us always remains a little child in our parent’s eyes. They may not have had the right tools or know-how to express this unconditional love for us in a skillful manner, but a parent never stops loving their child. By opening our heart to our parents we remove the barriers to experience the extraordinary love they have for us.
3. The Symphony of Obedience (Student–Teacher): The covenant between a disciple and master requires respect and obedience. What follows is an awakening of knowledge. Humility allows wisdom to flow. Acknowledging our teacher’s greatness breaks down the walls of ignorance and ego. Obedience to the master removes any blocks that keep us from leading a life of our highest potential. The heart that is open to such love of obedience is magnanimous, understanding and compassionate towards all beings.
When love is extraordinary, it imparts its perfume to the entire universe. Such extraordinary love cannot be concealed once it has been awakened within our heart. ~ Kaushal Aras
4. The Symphony of True Romance (Lover–Beloved): True romance requires that one surrender completely to the agony and ecstasy of love. To feel the sweet pain and exultation of spirit is better than to feel no love at all. Extraordinary love in this context of true romance is a communion, a complete surrender, a dance, an art, a supreme expression of beauty. 5. The Symphony of Community and Humanity (Man–Community): Our individual significance as a human being doesn’t come from material successes but as a result of self-actualization. When we embody the true meaning of community and harmony in the core of our Being, we become intoxicated with love. Community means coming together in unity. Humanity, then, is the essence of oneness. Community love is accepting others with compassion.
6. The Symphony of Devotion (Husband–Wife): Devotional love is giving of self through thoughts, feelings, and deeds with complete surrender. This is the art of conscious loving with humility. INTRODUCTION TO THE SACRED MAYAN CALENDAR-COSMOLOGY AND THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING Part 3 of 6
Read each issue of Inside Look Magazine to study our complete special report on the Mayan Calendar.
By Farel Footman, Roses Light Dancing Based on the work of Carl Johan Calleman, Ph.D. www.calleman.com 10
www.InsideLookMagazine.com
www.InsideLookNetwork.com
“The Maya could never distinguish the World Tree from the Calendar, or the Calendar from the World Tree, they were inseparable...The World Tree created an orientation in space, while the Calendar created an orientation in time.” The Cosmology of the World Tree (34MCTC)
A
ccording to the Maya, the World Tree (figure 11) is what creates and maintains the Four Directions of the world and generates wave movements that ultimately control the destiny of human kind.
Figure 11. “The World Tree of the Maya in the center of the Four Directions. Native American traditions commonly endow the geographical directions with different spiritual qualities (as in the Medicine Wheel). Among the Maya the Four Directions were symbolized by directional deities, so-called Bacabs.”
“In the view of the ancient Maya, the Tree of Life, or Heart of Heaven, was the creator of everything (even though it may have needed to be activated by Hunab-Ku, or the One God, in the beyond). Before time existed, “there was only the incomprehensible divinity of Hunab-Ku, permeating the Heart of Heaven, which slumbered for seven eternities. Then by the power of his word Hunab-Ku thrilled the Heart of Heaven.” Inside Look Magazine Vol. 2, Issue 4
As noted above, “The Four Directions are associated with different energies and colors that give them different qualities. The Four Directions are related to the center of the world, called Yaxkin by the Maya. At first sight, this may not appear very different from the standard European view, but the meaning given to these directions is clearly different from what is common today. In the Native American view, the Four Directions embody spiritual qualities that influence human life differently depending on the reigning time cycle. The spiritual winds generated by the Four Directions, dominating different time cycles, are the very essence of the Mayan view, whereas in the typical European view the four directions are seen merely as a passive coordinate system applied to the earth.” 11
Each direction represented different spiritual qualities that we intuitively sense ourselves. We intuit, for example, that there are real differences between the eastern and western mentalities. The Mayan Calendar-Cosmology helps understand why we feel this way. Calleman states: “Yet organizing the world according to four directions associated with different qualities may sound natural to all of us. Most of us recognize at the very least, significant mental and spiritual differences between the directions of East and West. Whereas we see the East as having been dominated by collective structures and a meditative tendency, the West is seen as individualist, extroverted, and action-oriented. What is the background of these differences? Where is the line that separates East from West? Where, geographically speaking, is the center of the planetary Medicine Wheel? (See figure 12 below)
Table X (The Global Brain)
Here Calleman is using the Mayan Calendar to illustrate that our own personality or more importantly our ‘consciousness’ is shaped by where we live and by the dualistic or unitary nature of an Underworld. We are more connected to the planet than we may realize. “The model I have suggested based on the Four Directions—with a midline separating two global hemispheres—is consistent with the so-called Hermetic principle: as above, so below. The qualities of the Four Directions point to a number of parallels between the “global brain” of the planet and the human brain. Our two brain hemispheres, right and left, have different functions because they are microcosmic reflections of the Eastern and Western Hemispheres of the planet (See Table X above). 12
“The rational, action-oriented Western Hemisphere is a parallel to the left “male” brain hemisphere with its analytical thinking and centers for speech, calculation, and sequential logic. The meditative Eastern Hemisphere, on the other hand, parallels the right, intuitive, wholeness-oriented, “female” brain hemisphere, which is also the center for our spatial and artistic abilities. What this means is that the different mentalities we find typical for people from the East and West have ultimately been generated by the World Tree.” “It is important to point out that in the cosmology of the four directions, all the different parts of the global brain are needed, and each has a role to play in the integrated activity and balance of the large whole. To draw another parallel with the individual human brain, new creative thinking typically arises in an interaction between the two brain hemispheres, in which the right hemisphere generates the new ideas and the left hemisphere evaluates them. Unfortunately, the two hemispheres do not interact in this way. While the technology of the West has certainly been exported to the East, and much philosophy in the past few decades has gone from the East to the West, the two modes of thinking are as yet not integrated; they merely coexist…Fruitful creative interaction is hampered by the lack of a common framework, a recognition that the two modes of thought are generated by the same source. The cosmology of the World Tree and the calendar of ancient Mesoamerica could help such a holistic framework emerge. The thinking of modern humans is out of balance partly because it has shut out the original West.” ~

Figure 12. Calleman locates the World Tree or Invisible Cross hypothetically at longitude 12 East. Notice that it extends from central Africa in the nation of Gabon and up through Rome, Germany and Sweden. By comparing historical events during odd and even numbered baktuns (one baktun equals 394 years) of the Great Cycle or National Underworld, Calleman finds that a definite pulse oscillates along the planetary midline created by the World Tree or Invisible Cross. This pulse comes from the earth’s core.
Calleman found that each kind of polarity affects a particular part of our brain creating the various states of consciousness, and hence, each part of the globe reacts like a brain. Thus, what Calleman uncovers is that we are directly affected by our planet because our consciousness shifts in correspondence with the shifts in Light created by the World Tree.
Communicating With Nature Channeled by Lexa Finley
Lexa received the following guidance from her spirit guides - spirits whose sole purpose is to help those of us on Earth along our path.
W
e are so happy to have the opportunity to share with you how to connect with nature and why this is so important to human growth. As the world of technology has evolved, people find less time to spend outdoors. Movies, games, and social media networks are extremely stimulating and have been slowly taking the place of enjoying nature. Do you ever think, “I’ll walk to the store to pick up what I need”? What would that be like? People are much healthier when they are moving their bodies, especially if they are outdoors. Being outside brings an entirely different vibration to what you are doing. It opens your mind and clears your heart. It takes away the structure of having a roof over your head and opens a clearer path to the spiritual world. To get the most of the human experience, the spirit must learn to incorporate fully into the body. Being outdoors and communing with nature is very grounding; it helps the spirit seat itself fully into the body and helps you to realize that your spirit is a part of your body. Feeling that connection helps you use the spirit and the body together to create great things and understand the goodness of nature and spirit. When you are grounded it is easy to stay on task, remember where you parked your car, and be more aware of what is going on around you.
Feel how good it feels to be connected to such a huge source of endless unconditionally loving energy. Listen to what the earth has to say to you and ask what you can do to help her. • Plant something! Preferably something you can eat. Playing in the dirt without gloves on, planting a seed, watering, watching it grow and then fortifying your body with what you created is an absolutely stellar way to feel the connection of body and spirit. Here’s a sample of how face reading works… Let’s take one feature – the nose – and describe some of its personality implications. Because the nose is how we take in air, which provides the energy to sustain life, it is perhaps the most important feature on a person’s face. The nose gives insights about how people support themselves and others. The nose not only indicates the amount of energy available to a person, but also shows their work style and how they handle money.
Face reading (Physiognomy) shows us how understanding the structure of the face and its accompanying features reveals a person’s personality style. Face reading can also tell us how people like to solve problems, deal with stress, their openness, their intimacy needs and even their basic honesty. The face is a living record of an individual’s life and, like personality, it is formed by both inherited For example, people with a concave or “ski genetics and how a person responds to life jump” nose work almost entirely from feelings – the more extreme the concavity the stronger experiences. the personality traits. Becoming a dynamic communicator is not just defined by mastery of a verbal style or a well-rehearsed procedure; it also requires the capability to immediately read the face and body language of your audience. What we are discovering in today’s world is that with the stress we all encounter on a daily basis, it is paramount that we learn to take care of ourselves. The airlines have it right – you must put your own oxygen mask on first before helping those in the seat next to you. If you don’t, there will be no one to help the child or the person in need beside you. It runs counter to how most of us were raised. Yet when we know how to fill our own containers, it gives us a lot more to offer the world around us. Our gifts are more fully and easily expressed. The other interesting fact about this is that when you feel good and energized it makes you more effective and often more efficient. Have you ever noticed that when you are tired or frazzled you make more mistakes? Research has shown this to be true across all professions, not to mention our private lives. There are distinct skills in how to listen to your inner wisdom that can be taught and learned. I have been gathering these skills from many different sources for a number of years. At first, I primarily taught healthcare professionals. But today more and more people are realizing the importance of these abilities. So how do we learn the skills of staying full and energized? Can anyone learn these? Absolutely! First, allow yourself to slow down and take your attention inward. Look at what’s going on inside of you. You may need to partially or fully close your eyes. Awaken the Shaman Within
By Linda Star Wolf
(Excerpted from “Shamanic Breathwork: Journeying Beyond the Limits of the Self,” by Linda Star Wolf, published by Inner Traditions / Bear & Company, December 2009, ISBN: 978-1-59143-106-0)
Have you recently had a wake-up call in your personal life? Do you recognize that, on a planetary level, there are signs all around that we need to heal ourselves and change the outer conditions of our world? Amidst continuing violations of civil rights, accelerating conflicts among nations, and severe economic issues, humanity is experiencing a collective time of crisis. Never on our planet have we needed to awaken our consciousness more than now. Many healers and teachers are awakening to the healing power of shamanic consciousness and are discovering ways to synthesize the timeless wisdom of the ancients, as well 18
as more contemporary philosophies. The Shamanic Breathwork™ Process merges the older Scorpio mysteries of death and rebirth with newer downloads from the Aquarian energies of peace, love, and inner wisdom. We are now being called to embrace and unite these two paradigms, incorporating both of their gifts into our present-day lives. This approach of both/and, rather than either/ or, honors ancient traditions, yet also honors the path of direct experience that is governed by the heart’s wisdom. We are becoming co-creators in the now and, as present-day shamanic beings, helping to envision and invent the future, rather than becoming a

passive byproduct of it. Shamanic consciousness calls upon all of our inner energies and wisdom, as well as those of the collective consciousness, archetypal forces, power animals, spiritual guides, and God/Goddess to illuminate the highest path. In the Shamanic Breathwork™ process we consciously create the alchemical sacred space to allow an individual’s soul to resonate with his or her core truth. From this place of soul resonance, the person is able to follow that inner truth, blending it with higher energies and forces, in the quest to connect to the natural and spirit worlds. www.InsideLookNetwork.com
The time to heal is now, the time to remember who we really are is now, and the time to take our creative healing vision back to our communities is now. The motivation for awakening the shaman within is to bring more depth and richness into our lives, and to be able to shift from outer authority to the inner wisdom of the individual soul’s journey. The impetus to awaken the inner shaman is to discover who we really are and to explore the bigger questions in life, such as, “What are we here to do?” My personal answer to this question is that we are here to live a much bigger story than the one we have been unconsciously playing out in the past. To live a bigger story from a spiritual perspective requires not only a call, but a willingness to awaken to the bigger picture of who we really are. Sometimes there is a vague sense that there is something larger—a longing for connection and remembering our deeper purpose. This is our first phase of awakening and often occurs in response to a trauma or disappointment, such as addiction, divorce, illness, loss of a career, or a mental or spiritual crisis. Sometimes we are more proactive in our spiritual search to discover who we are beyond ego, but in my experience, it’s rare. In this age of consumerism it has become our nature to stay distracted and hide out in our comfort zone. Most of us become proactive in our need for change only after turbulent times awaken our longing for something more. Having to deal with critical issues pushes us to awaken to the deeper aspects of the soul’s true path. Traditional psychotherapy serves a specific purpose and is sometimes an important aspect of our journey, but it is definitely not the whole journey. Often it puts us back in the box, a process somewhat akin to trying to put a baby back in the womb. For many of us, staying rooted in traditional therapy is just a postponement of facing and embracing our deeper spiritual issues. On some level it feels safer and more comfortable to stay asleep and disconnected by being a couch potato, compulsively watching TV, engaging in addictive behavior, losing ourselves in relationships, or otherwise engaging in activities that dull the mind and numb consciousness. In order to awaken our inner shaman, we need a crack in our outer armor and a willingness to step outside the box. We need to know that there is something going on beneath everything. We need to resonate with that deep wellspring of knowledge that flows within us. If we can consider this possibility, then we are ready for the amazing discovery of our true nature. Inside Look Magazine Vol. 2, Issue 4
When this happens, we send a spiritual message to the universe saying, “I am ready to surrender to something beyond my human ego.” In this way, we open to divine assistance from God, Goddess, a Higher Power, or whatever we envision as being sacred and capable of transforming our lives. When we communicate this willingness and readiness to the Great Mystery and what we hold as sacred, we are saying that we are willing to transform and be receptive to something bigger than our smaller, everyday personas. We are calling in the collective, eternal wisdom of the Divine and moving from I to We.
begin to see coincidental resonances—in books, on TV, and in conversations in our everyday lives. These synchronistic events hold within them the visible reassurance that our inner shaman has heard our call.
When we surrender in this way, we find that synchronistic things begin to happen in our lives according to divine providence. We can trust that we are experiencing energetic attunements with the universe when we

Yosemite Springtime in

s the weather begins to warm and the snow begins to melt, springtime becomes the most picturesque time to visit Yosemite and the surrounding areas of the Sierra National Forest. The Yosemite Valley comes to life with an abundance of wildflowers and waterfalls, and Inside Look decided to make this our spring getaway destination to discover more about one of the world’s most awe-inspiring wonders, as well as the ecoconscious Tenaya Lodge.
Quick Fact The park is 1,189 square miles, approximately the size of Rhode Island, containing thousands of lakes, ponds, and streams. Mostly known for its magnificent waterfalls, granite cliffs, and Giant Sequoia groves, Yosemite is a natural heaven teeming with abundant beauty. “The Bachelor” and “Three Graces” found in the Mariposa Grove

Whether taking an early morning hike to the Mariposa Grove to contemplate the growth of the famous giant Sequoias, or driving to an overlook to view a photographer’s paradise of the Yosemite Valley, Half Dome and other natural rock formations, the Sierras are overwhelmingly breathtaking everywhere you look. If you’re planning a photography trip, make your plans, and then
plan on extending them for a couple of days. John Muir explained the photographer’s mind when he said, “When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the universe.” This is how Yosemite makes you feel, as you try to focus on just one of the many gifts that nature so abundantly gives here.
“When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the universe.” - John Muir History In 1861, Galen Clark first entered the Mariposa Grove and was so impressed that he spent the rest of his life guiding visitors among these giants and urging for their preservation. In 1864, Abraham Lincoln paused during the Civil War to set aside the Mariposa Grove and Yosemite Valley as a protected state reserve “for the pleasuring of the people.” Along with John Muir, Galen Clark was instrumental in Yosemite’s preservation, and it was him that the Galen Clark Tree was named for, now a living memorial which bears his name. Clark lived to see Yosemite National Park established in 1890, when Muir and his Sierra Club continued to lobby the government and influential people for its creation, and the grove was incorporated into the park in 1906.

Quick Fact
Although the road to the Mariposa Grove is closed until mid-late May, it is only a two mile hike from the park’s south entrance, making Tenaya Lodge the ideal place to stay for a visit to this area.
Tenaya Lodge at Dusk
Nestled just two miles from the south entrance of Yosemite National Park, Tenaya Lodge at Yosemite offers easy access to Yosemite’s most alluring attractions and all of the conveniences and services expected of a luxury resort property… and they care. Owned and operated by one of the world’s leading hospitality and food service providers, Delaware North Companies, Tenaya Lodge has implemented the GreenPath® program to ensure environmental responsibility in the area.
Tenaya Lodge Delux Room
To experience Yosemite’s waterfalls and magnificent wildflowers, guests must visit the area after the peak runoff begins in April and before the summer heat leaves the waterfalls dry. Those wishing to experience the assortment of wildflowers must take advantage of the much shorter viewing window, as the flowers are only in bloom from late February to May.

When talking with staff members, from food servers to managers, and everyone in between, you get the feeling that everyone truly believes in what they’re doing. The Green Path program isn’t just a corporate policy set in place to jump on the “green” bandwagon, but truly a program that other corporations can follow to be environmentally responsible. Green tip from Tenaya Say goodbye to sticky notes! Next time you need to jot a note or leave yourself a reminder to drop off expense reports, head to the computer before grabbing a pen and sticky note.
Novell GroupWise, Delaware North’s preferred e-mail provider, has several tools that can help you stay organized and on top of your day-to-day tasks. For example, let’s say you need to remember to call a colleague at 2:30. Rather than jot a note and stick it on your phone, set up a time delayed e-mail. These e-mails can be sent to oneself at a specific time. For this example, you may set it up to arrive at 2:15. However, emails can be scheduled hours, days and weeks in advance to help ensure you never forget to do something again. To set up a time-delayed e-mail, use the following steps: 1. Open a new e-mail. 2. Set yourself as both the sender and recipient. 3. Type the appropriate message in the message field. 4. Select the “Send Options” tab. 5. In the right column there is a “Delay Delivery” feature which will enable associates to select the day and time the e-mail will be delivered. 6. Send. The benefits of time-delayed e-mails include reduced paper waste, cost savings and less clutter in one’s office space. 30

Geology 101 10 million years ago, the Sierra Nevada started to be uplifted by the vertical movement along the Sierra fault, tilting and increasing the gradient of western-flowing streams. The streams consequently ran faster, cutting their valleys more quickly.

About 15,000 years ago marked the end of a two million year period of glaciations, when the major excavation and shaping of Yosemite Valley and other canyons in the area took place. The results were the creation of the long, deep valleys we see today.

Waterfalls The ebb and flow of seasons are greatly reflected in the waterfalls of Yosemite. Fed from snow fields, waterfalls can be found foaming from the sheer cliffs. Perhaps the most prominent of the Yosemite Valley waterfalls is Bridalveil Fall, which is the waterfall seen from the Tunnel View viewpoint at the east end of the Wawona Tunnel. When photographing this waterfall up close, make sure to bring a waterproof jacket and protect your gear, as a light wind may blow the brisk water heavily onto the viewpoint from the valley floor. Wet or dry, it’s definitely worth it to walk the trail to the falls for another amazing view.

El Capitan, a 3000 foot monolith that watches over Yosemite Valley, is one of the most popular rock climbing destinations in the world because of its diverse range of climbing routes. Climbers can be seen from below year-round making their way toward the sky, appearing as ants on a log.
Quick Fact Granite domes such as Sentinel Dome and Half Dome (right) rise 3,000 and 4,800 feet (910 and 1,500 m), respectively, above the valley floor. Yosemite Valley makes up only one percent of the park area, but this is where most travelers arrive and stay.

The Ahwahnee Hotel is not to be missed when visiting the Yosemite Valley. Reminiscent of an era gone by, the hotel still retains its majestic environment, boasting large gathering halls, and fireplaces. Its architectural design is simple, yet still impressive by today’s standards, as it blends in with the natural surroundings. Yosemite Falls and Glacier point can be viewed from its windows. Visiting the Dining Hall is a breathtaking experience in itself, as is contemplating the famous Christmas parties from the past with Ansel Adams and friends. ~
Quick Fact The Ahwahnee Hotel opened in 1927 and was designated a Natural Historic Landmark in 1987. The Ahwahnee has been the destination of royalty and presidents, and even served as a US Navy hospital during World War II. Photos: Mike Williams
