Green Christmas A

re you dreaming of a green Christmas? I’m not talking about the kind with lots of money (well, what could that hurt?) or one without snow (the horror!). Rather, how about the kind that tosses materialism out on its “Grinchy” ear and instead welcomes back an era of quieter, simpler times? Yes, my friends, chestnuts really can roast by an open fire and a silent night is possible after all. So if you want to celebrate this year without sending your electrical meter zooming into a tailspin, ripping a hole in your wallet, or harboring stress in the bags that shouldn’t be under your eyes, then consider these tips for going green for the holidays! Cut the lights Not all of them, of course, but step back with purpose. If your house can be clearly seen from two blocks away, it’s time to unplug. Stand at the curb and look at the snaking miles of cords running across your festive façade and think, just for a moment, how great it would look to see bountiful greenery with velvety ribbons instead. Then, once you’re convinced, gather boughs of pine 6

or other evergreens if you have them nearby and wrap them with florists’ wire to hold them in shape. Add a festive red bow and you’ve got the perfect holiday home accessory. Even better, unlike the wires and bulbs, it’ll look beautiful both night and day! Deck the Halls …with a whole lot less! Few folks will deny the beauty in the shimmery, sparkling world that falls over Christmas like a blanket of snow, but you’d be surprised at how much stress it can bring on. The visual noise may excite the kids, but for adults it tends to push a subconscious panic button. Whether you have financial concerns, don’t like crowds, or aren’t looking forward to traveling or a visit with old Uncle Jack, there’s nothing quite like things that shine to remind you that the stress will soon come down the chimney with the elves. Toning down your decorations will not only ease your mind in a remarkable way – it’ll also save electricity and you’ll cut down on a lot of waste by the keeping plastic, foil, and packaging out of your home. So this year, instead of layering your tree with glass and tinsel, opt for strings of popcorn instead. Get the family together to thread the kernels and tie scraps of red and green fabric into bows at the tips of branches. Together, you’re guaranteed to create some memories that just don’t come in a box.

17 Dec:

You’re not thinking about money again are you? Well, maybe this time you’re not so far off. Gift cards are no longer considered thoughtless; in fact, they’re a great way to cut down on unnecessary waste. Personalize your gift by choosing one for their favorite store, or take it one charitable step further and give to a good cause in the recipient’s name. Eliminate the expense and waste of wrapping paper and do something really great for someone all in one fell swoop!

It’s amazing how going green will ease the stress on your wallet and on your mind, but it’s when you simplify the season that you’re getting back to what it’s really all about. There, hidden not too far beneath the lights and the traffic and the crowds, is the true meaning of Christmas.

On his first Memorial Day, he gave himself a spiked hairdo. We have no idea how he managed that, but he looked quite jaunty. This was after he had dragged my 5-pound wrist weights through the house and splashed around in the tub after my shower. We assume this must have all been in preparation for some hot date. Our other cats play with their cat toys, sleep in the cat bed, get high on catnip, and treat us with the proper balance of love and disdain, as cats do. Phoenix is much more complex than that. We gave him a stuffed mouse a couple of Christmases ago and it has become his best friend. He isn’t even interested in other toys, but he carries his buddy around incessantly. In fact, we eventually started just calling it Buddy and if we ask him where Buddy is, he goes and gets him. He puts him in windowsills, bathes him in the water dish, talks to him, and sleeps with him. When the hard drive on my computer went out last winter, we had a terrible time getting it up and running again. Even tech support couldn’t figure it out for a while. At one point, Phoenix jumped up on the desk, hit a button with his paw and suddenly the set-up screen was working! We figure he uses

A Season for Sharing in Fire Safety A Factsheet on Holiday Fire Prevention

E

ach year fires occurring during the holiday season claim the lives of over 400 Americans, injure 1,650 more, and cause over $990 million in damage.

According to the U. S. Fire Administration (USFA), there are simple life-saving steps you can take to ensure a safe and happy holiday. By following some of the outlined precautionary tips, individuals can greatly reduce their chances of becoming a holiday fire casualty.

PREVENTING CHRISTMAS TREE FIRES Special fire safety precautions need to be taken when keeping a live tree in the house. A burning tree can rapidly fill a room with fire and deadly gases.

SELECTING A TREE FOR THE HOLIDAY Needles on fresh trees should be green and hard to pull back from the branches, and the needle should not break if the tree has been freshly cut. The trunk should be sticky to the touch. Old trees can be identified by bouncing the tree trunk on the ground. If many needles fall off, the tree has been cut too long, has probably dried out, and is a fire hazard.

CARING FOR YOUR TREE Do not place your tree close to a heat source, including a fireplace or heat vent. The heat will dry out the tree, causing it to be more easily ignited by heat, flame or sparks. Be careful not to drop or flick cigarette ashes near a tree. Do not put your live tree up too early or leave it up for longer than two weeks. Keep the tree stand filled with water at all times.

DISPOSING OF YOUR TREE Never put tree branches or needles in a fireplace or woodburning stove. When the tree becomes dry, discard it promptly. The best way to dispose of your tree is by taking it to a recycling center or having it hauled away by a community pick-up service.

HOLIDAY LIGHTS MAINTAIN YOUR HOLIDAY LIGHTS

CANDLE CARE AVOID USING LIT CANDLES

Inspect holiday lights each year for frayed wires, bare spots, gaps in the insulation, broken or cracked sockets, and excessive kinking or wear before putting them up. Use only lighting listed by an approved testing laboratory.

If you do use them, make sure they are in stable holders and place them where they cannot be easily knocked down. Never leave the house with candles burning.

DO NOT OVERLOAD ELECTRICAL OUTLETS Do not link more than three light strands, unless the directions indicate it is safe. Connect strings of lights to an extension cord before plugging the cord into the outlet. Make sure to periodically check the wires - they should not be warm to the touch.

DO NOT LEAVE HOLIDAY LIGHTS ON UNATTENDED

NEVER PUT LIT CANDLES ON A TREE Do not go near a Christmas tree with an open flame - candles, lighters or matches. Finally, as in every season, have working smoke alarms installed on every level of your home, test them monthly and keep them clean and equipped with fresh batteries at all times. Know when and how to call for help. And remember to practice your home escape plan.

HOLIDAY DECORATIONS USE ONLY NONFLAMMABLE DECORATIONS All decorations should be nonflammable or flame-retardant and placed away from heat vents.

NEVER PUT WRAPPING PAPER IN A FIREPLACE It can result in a very large fire, throwing off dangerous sparks and embers that may result in a chimney fire.

ARTIFICIAL CHRISTMAS TREES If you are using a metallic or artificial tree, make sure it is flame retardant.

t the start of my adult life, I had a choice to make. God gave me all the brains I would ever need to be successful. He also gave me an alcoholic mother who died before I graduated high school, and an early life spent in a series of relatives’ homes, the first tolerating me for the money my father sent, the second needing me to baby-sit my dying grandfather so she could continue working to pay off her house.

Education, once designed to make us more cognizant of the world around us, is now focused on learning just enough to command higher salaries. My four children are intelligent, literate, compassionate, aware human beings, and the earth is better for their presence. When I die, I will be uplifted knowing they carry on my belief in the importance of every individual and every act. No man is an island, and nothing occurs without consequence. We are all part of some greater whole which is diminished by the loss of every single thing, from a broken old man to a species of butterfly. If I didn’t believe this, I would end it all today.

I did not learn the value of caring from others. It sprang up inside me like a strange flower, a rose blooming in the desert, and shaped me for some purpose whose importance may never be revealed, at least to me. Call it an epiphany, or a miracle, but at the age of 17 I decided that the most important thing I could do with my Godgiven intelligence was to have children and raise them well. The Gift of

Channeled by Lexa Finley

Giving

Lexa received the following guidance from her spirit guides - spirits whose sole purpose is to help those of us on Earth along our path.

Giving is a large part of the human experience, offering one great can do this thing called life alone. (Sorry to burst your bubble if joy and sense of purpose. One reason we are here on Earth is you thought you could!) to learn to coexist. In order to do that, there has to be a great deal of give-and-take between one other. No single individual The gift of giving brings extremely large amounts of joy to both the giver and receiver. Here are a few guidelines: • Give because you want to, not because you feel you must. • Give without expectation of receiving back. • Give without needing validation. • Give because you see there is a need you can meet. • Give because you enjoy doing it. Everyone needs to give; it is an innate part of the human fiber. Giving is easy. Everyone also needs to receive. Receiving can be much harder because your ego can get in the way. There is a real gift in allowing yourself to receive something offered you: it provides another the opportunity to give and have joy. Despite popular belief, receiving can be a selfless act. Be aware that if you are giving with a grudge attached, you will not attract anything positive from that experience. You are all capable of manifesting anything you desire - you do not have to give in order to get what you want out of life. It is not a tradeoff. Just give because you enjoy it. By being in a place of joy, you attract the things you want and need. We are sure you have heard many stories of how someone selflessly gave in a way that changed a life for the better. What can you do to change a life today? How can you give selflessly to bring joy to another?

ot very surprisingly from this background the physicochemical conditions on our own particular planet in numerous ways also seem fine-tuned to, and more or less optimal for, the emergence of life. Because of the way the constants of nature are constrained by the Cosmic Tree of Life, they do not allow for life to emerge at just any location

This reasoning starkly highlights how decisive the choice of including, or not including, the tun and phi constants is for our perception of the nature of the universe. For those who include them, they become the basis of a new physics in which the design, plan and purpose of the universe to create life is a logical conclusion. For those who do not include them, it may be possible to continue to present life as an unplanned accident hinging on a number of constants that just “happened” to be right. This is what some cosmologists have done to explain the emergence of life in our particular universe. They have even resorted to suggesting that we are living in a “multiverse,” in which a zillion different universes with different constants have been generated at random. They claim that we just happen to live in the one that is favorable to life. Yet in this context such speculations testify to

Inside Look Magazine November/December

how complicated modern science has become, and how far it has strayed from actual empirical observations, in its ambition to uphold the dogma of nondesign. It also becomes clear that the randomism of modern science is a reflection of its predominant antitheistic ideology. While anyone is entitled to…what we could call an atheist religion, I see no particular reason that this particular ideology should be allowed to monopolize science and present itself as the only possible truth when in fact it does not foster clarity or simplicity… 121 For the universe to be able to generate life, the constants of nature need to have relationships to one another within very narrow ranges, which ultimately are subordinated to the space-time organization provided by the Cosmic Tree of Life. We can be certain that many other constants than those already mentioned are also constrained by the space-time organization of the Cosmic Tree of Life. We are here only beginning to formulate a theory of everything about the physical reality in mathematical terms. What is important to note for our purposes however is that, by definition, such a theory must be a description of a universe with life and not one of dead matter. This incidentally is also the only kind of universe that anyone has ever known to exist.” 122 ~

“At closer inspection we may realize that many, if not most, of the conditions that make the Earth a hospitable planet are consequences of its distance to the Sun, which gives it a temperature that is suitable for higher life. It has been estimated that if the Earth’s distance from the Sun was only 5 percent shorter, it would have become a choking greenhouse, and if it were 1 percent farther away, it would have suffered eternal glaciations. 12 Why then is it that the Earth is able to do this delicate rope walk? Why is it located at exactly the right distance from the sun for it to thrive? This is again related to the tun as a basic constant of nature inherent in the space-time organization of the cosmic Tree of Life. We may understand the emergence of optimal conditions for life on Earth in terms of Kepler’s third law. According to this law, the distance of a planet from the Sun, and thus by implication its habitability, depends on its period of revolution around the Sun. For the Earth, this period of revolution is 365.2422 days. This period is close to the tun (and it is very noteworthy that the year slowly approaches the value of 360 days), 13 a constant that, as we saw earlier on the galactic level, the constants of the forces of nature have been fine-tuned to. On the level of the solar system, we are able to see the effects of this finetuning in a new and more precise way because of the immediate sensitivity of the habitability of our planet to the strengths of these forces.

in the solar system. Instead they are constrained so that all the conditions are optimal for life to emerge on a planet with a tun orbit, since there, on a local level, its polar axis reproduces the Cosmic Tree of Life. In orbits other than the tun orbit, the conditions for biological evolution to higher levels will not be at hand. Earth is hospitable to life because the constants of the four forces of nature, as well as the tun constant, were defined by the space-time organization of the Cosmic Tree of Life at the big bang. Earth also has an orbit whose rate of revolution is defined by this tun constant. This shows that the purpose of the universe to generate life existed from its very beginning with a focus on manifesting this exactly on planets with a tun orbit. Our own particular Earth was “tagged” for life because of its tun orbit, and life has not appeared here because of a series of innumerable randomly occurring events.

Five Wishes: How Answering One Simple Question Can Make Your Dreams Come True Gay Hendricks is an internationally famous author, seminar leader, web entrepreneur, and filmmaker. He is the author of more than 20 books, including the national bestseller Conscious Loving and the founder of the Spiritual Cinema Circle. He resides with his wife, author and seminar leader Kathlyn Hendricks, in Ojai, California. INISIDE LOOK MAGAZINE: Five Wishes describes a conversation that changed your life. Who was it with and what happened? GAY HENDRICKS: It was a brief conversation at a party I didn’t even want to be at. I went to the party with Kathlyn, who would later become my wife (now 27 years into a great marriage that probably would not have occurred had I not gone to the party). I met a man named Ed Steinbrecher, who seemed about as uncomfortable at the party as I was. We decided not to engage in any small talk, so he asked me a question that definitely qualified as Big Talk. ILM: Five Wishes has a question in it that you say everyone should ask themselves. What is it? GH: Ed asked me to imagine that I was on my deathbed and that someone asked me, “Was your life a total success?” If it wasn’t, what was the one thing you wish had happened that would have made it a success. ILM: Why is the book called Five Wishes? GH: Ed said that everybody had the capacity to make five wishes come true, and now that I’ve had all five of mine come true, I think he’s right. Maybe we can make 50 come true, but start with your five biggest ones.

HUMAN DESIGN REVEALS

‘DNA OF YOUR TRUE NATURE’ “When people recognize their Human Design, they often say it is like looking in the looking glass for the person they have always wanted to find.”

Your soul, about to embark on its journey, is curious. The messenger smiles: “This is your design for life -- all you need to know about yourself for the years ahead is here.” If only life were as simple as being handed all the answers at birth! Yet this imagined scene explains the essence of Human Design -- a new system that breaks down and details the DNA of your true nature. This system is, in my mind, the successor to astrology because it works in a similar way -- making a calculation based on birth data -- and yet it takes self-knowledge to the next level of understanding. It produces a “life chart” -- a literal map of your inner-being -- but instead of creating a one-size-fits-all star sign, it pinpoints your precise make-up, the secret ingredients of your own individuality. Whereas a Pisces is a Pisces and a Taurean is a Taurean, your Human Design creates a personality blueprint as unique as a fingerprint. It is not primarily predictive; instead, it shows you how to be the author of your own destiny. It is an inward guide that unravels the human conundrum of who you are; a compass that both reunites and realigns us with our truest selves. Inside Look Magazine November/December
