f you thought Prince William County was just a sleepy commuter suburb, think again. In our second annual Guide to Prince William, we take a look at some of the places and things that make this sprawling 348-square-mile county of ours so special. On Pages 20 and 21, you’ll find reader photos of their favorite spots to get out in nature, from a stunning overlook atop Bull Run Mountain to the tidal shores of the Potomac River. On Page 4, we explore the old Lorton Correctional Complex along the county line, where remnants of the prison's past are now a backdrop to a thriving arts center. Then on Page 8, we tell you about a little-known astronomical gem atop Bull Run Mountain, where telescopes scan the heavens. There’s news you need to know, as well, like an update on the 95 Express Lanes coming next year and what you need to do to prepare. And on Page 10, we explore a new trend in the county, specialty breweries, where the beer flows along with good conversation.

DID YOU KNOW...?

We’re betting these pages contain a lot of information you didn’t know about the place we call home. Hope you enjoy reading. Kari Pugh | Editor kpugh@princewilliamtoday.com

GUIDE TO LORTON PRISON

FROM PRISON TO MASTERPIECE

id you know that D.C. music icon Chuck Brown, known as the godfather of go-go, learned to play guitar while doing a stint for murder at Lorton Correctional Complex? Brown, who gained national fame in the 1970s for his song “Bustin’ Loose,” was accused of shooting a man in what he claimed was self defense. He served eight years at Lorton, the sprawling old prison complex at the Prince William-Fairfax line – and there traded cigarettes for a guitar. Known in his later years for D.C. Lottery commercials, Brown died in

2012 at the age of 75. Today, all of Lorton’s prisoners are long gone, but the guard towers, old brick barracks and memories of escape sirens echoing through the night remain. Now, more than 100 years after the first D.C. prisoners arrived at the 1,155-acre prison complex near the Occoquan River, some of the buildings have new life as a center for the arts and some of the rolling green hills have been transformed into a vibrant park. But in the woods surrounding areas now known as the Lorton Workhouse

Lorton FROM PAGE 4

An old sign is still bolted to the prison walls, a reminder of the center’s past.

In 1997, Congress ordered Lorton to close by 2001 and send all prisoners to federal corrections facilities. In 2001, there were no more inmates at Lorton. Fairfax County bought most of the land – by then nearly 3,500 acres -- from D.C. and is still working to transform much of it into parks and historic sites. The Lorton Workhouse Arts Center, with six studio buildings, galleries and space for theater arts, opened in 2008. It is on the National Register of Historic Places. Nearby Laurel Hills Park contains another set of old brick prison buildings, and trails that lead to old warden homes, but today is a popular place for disc golf and fishing.

A guard tower stands watch over Laurel Hills Park, land that was once part of the Lorton prison complex.

Arts Center and Laurel Hill Park, people are still finding remnants of the land’s days as a prison – an old train car left rusting about half a mile down a trail, the occasional license plate embedded in the dirt, unexplained brick ruins that at some point served as walls. The earliest prisoners at Lorton arrived by barge in 1910 and lived first in tents, then in wooden buildings. In the 1920s, prisoners built the distinctive brick Colonial Revival brick buildings that still stand today. “The prisoners made the bricks, fired them in kilns on the nearby river and built the dormitories, mess hall and administration buildings,” according to a history published by the arts center. The prison served for many years as a working farm, with the aim of reforming prisoners so they could rejoin the community as productive citizens. In 1912, the reformatory opened a women’s workhouse, where five years later, women suffragists protesting for the right to vote were jailed – and forced food through a tube in their noses when they launched a hunger strike. Today, Building 9 contains a prison museum, with life-size figures of a nurse and doctor force-feeding a female prisoner. Lorton, then known as the workhouse, closed in 1968, but remained under the control of the D.C. government. In 1983, it reopened as a medium-security prison for D.C. inmates but was soon overcrowded and rife with corruption.

id you know there’s an observatory on the top of Bull Run Mountain, far from the bright lights of the rest of Northern Virginia, where stargazers enjoy clear views of the night’s sky? Hopewell Observatory is a small building with a roll-top roof where astronomy enthusiasts have been using telescopes to observe the stars for decades. The observatory was built about 30 years ago by some members of the National Capital Astronomers, the oldest astronomy club in the area. “Members of the local astronomy club … started looking for a place to put an observatory that was not too far from the Beltway,” said Guy Brandenburg, president of the group that operates Hopewell Observatory. Their search led them to a spot off the beaten path, tucked away on about 4 acres on a ridge of Bull Run Mountain. The closest intersection to the observatory is a Bull Run Mountain Road and Waterfall Road. An access road, normally locked, leads star seekers off Bull Run Mountain Road to the observatory. Though founded by some of the National Capital Astronomers mem-

bers, the observatory is independent from the club and is not an official club project, Brandenburg said. The observatory is operated by a group of 11 people, just two of whom work professionally in astronomy, Brandenburg said. For most, like Brandenburg, a retired math teacher, astronomy is more of a hobby. “We members use the facilities as the weather and our schedules permit,” he said. The observatory has four telescopes, two inside the observatory and two outside. There’s a 14-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope, a 6-inch refractor, a 10-inch Newtonian telescope and a 13-inch Wright-Newtonian telescope, which Brandenburg describes as a “an unusual catadioptroc scope” made by group member and telescope owner Bob Bolster. The observatory is normally closed to the general public, but opens its doors for events about twice a year, Brandenburg said. The next open house is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 18, beginning around sundown. All are welcome at the open house, but parking is limited. For more information or directions, call the observatory at 703-7542317.

id you know a growing number of breweries are popping up in the Prince William County area? Craft breweries have been a growing trend across the country in recent years, and a law passed by the General Assembly in 2012 made it easier for breweries to operate in Virginia. The law enabled breweries to obtain ABC licenses to operate more like wineries and sell the beer they make on site. In 2013, Bad Wolf Brewery became the first brewery in Manassas when it opened at 9776 Center St. “In Manassas we were really well-received,” said Claire Ainsworth, an assistant brewer at Bad Wolf Brewery. “The city was very welcoming to us and when we first opened, we were running out of beer in 45 minutes. The joke in the community is that our bar is kind of like Cheers. Everyone knows you.” Bad Wolf, founded by Sarah and Jeremy Meyers in 2012, is a small, 1.5-barrel brewery that features a rotating selection of more than 75 different beers. “It’s never the same thing twice,” Ainsworth said. Business has been good since the brewery officially opened last year, and the company plans a second location in the near future, Ainsworth said. Across the street, at 9436 Center Point Lane in Manassas, Heritage Brewing Co. celebrated its grand opening on Dec. 31, 2013. The brewery produces both 20-barrel hand-crafted batches and half-barrel artisanal batches of specialty beer, according to its website.

In Gainesville, Tin Cannon Brewery has applied to become the first ABC-licensed brewery in Prince William County. Co-owners Aaron Ludwig and John Hilkert said they hope to open in November in an industrial warehouse at 7679 Limestone Drive in Gainesville, which they are renovating. Bad Wolf Brewery Both Ludwig and Hilkis hosting a fall fesert have been brewing at tival, featuring beer home for years. After Ludfrom several local wig received a book about breweries, Oct. 5 opening a craft brewery from 2 to 7 p.m. in for Christmas a few years the Cavalry Village ago, they decided to try Parking lot, 9776 Center St., Manasopening their business. sas. Admission is “We just started thinkfree and they’ll be ing we could actually do selling $5 pints. this,” Ludwig said. The brewery, named in a tongue-in-cheek ode to the area’s past, plans to feature a menu of three flagship beers and three rotating selections, which will be available in pints and half-pints to drink on site and growlers to take home. Hilkert said he normally prefers more unusual beers and Ludwig tends to prefer more traditional selections, so they think together they’ll be able to offer something that appeals to everyone. On the other end of the county, Jonathan Groner and Tim Hoke are developing plans to open Heroic Aleworks in Woodbridge. Groner and Hoke are gathering interested investors and finding a site for their planned brewery, they said. They’re also developing a list of beers based on a superhero theme. “More than anything else we’re trying to have a little fun with this,” said Hoke. “We were trying to come up with something that would set us apart from other breweries, and we came up with the idea of having different personalities for each of our beers,” Groner said. The two said they have been interested in brewing for a long time and, in recent months, started working on making a business out of their hobby. “It’s just one of those things where you brew your own beer and start sharing with friends and family and it turns out you’re good at it,” Hoke said. Right now, craft beer lovers in the Woodbridge area have to go to Manassas, Fredericksburg or Alexandria to find locally brewed beers. Hoke and Groner said they’re hoping Heroic Aleworks can Excluding fill that void and add to the craft brewery community in Northern Virginia. “The great thing about the craft beer community it’s a really collegial group,” Hoke said. “It’s not competitive in the way you might think it would be. If you have questions, you can call on any of the other brewers locally and they’ll help you out. It’s that kind of community.”

Plans to open in November and expects to be open

The track, operated by the Northern Virginia BMX Parents Association, generally hosts two practices a week and local and national races on most Saturdays during its operating season. “It’s open to all ages. We have everyone from little ones, 3-year-olds on their first two-wheeler, to people in their 70s,” said Jennifer Helmick, president of the Northern Virginia BMX Parents Association. Helmick said her two sons have ridden at the track for years and she’s been known to ride there as well. The track is open to riders of all skill levels, from novices to experts, Helmick said, and parents and adult riders are always on hand to help beginners when the track is open. The BMX track opened in May 2000 and was operated by the Prince William Park Authority through 2008. That year, a budget shortfall led the park authority to propose closing the track in 2009. That’s when the Northern Virginia BMX Parents Association, a non-profit group whose members had volunteered at the track for years, stepped in. The group signed an agreement with the park authority to take over operations of the track, at its own expense. In April 2013, the Prince William Board of County Supervisors approved a new memorandum of understanding between the county and the non-profit group that will allow the group to continue operating the track, still owned by the county’s parks department, through 2016. “We’re a purely volunteer organization made of parents and riders who maintain the track,” Helmick said. The local BMX group is sanctioned by part of the larger USA BMX group, the world’s largest non-profit BMX racing group. According to that group’s rules, riders must be a member of the organization to race at the NOVA BMX track. Helmick said a rider’s first visit to the BMX track is free, and after that riders have to join USA BMX for $60 a year. The local track charges a $5 fee for practices, usually held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 p.m. to dusk, and a $10 fee for local races, held on Saturdays. Riders are required to wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants and full-face masks to ride at the track. The track can lend a fullface mask to new riders who don’t have one, Helmick said. According to USA BMX, the sport, whose name is short for bicycle motocross, began in the late 1960s or early 1970s in Southern California. Over the years, the sport, which involves racing and performing jumps and tricks on bicycles, gained popularity. In 2008 BMX became an Olympic sport, which sparked more interest in BMX racing, Helmick said. “It gives the kids something to strive for,” she said. For more information about NOVA BMX, including a schedule of upcoming practices and races, visit www.novabmx. org.

Did you know the state’s most visited attractions are shopping malls in Northern Virginia? In 2013, Tysons Corner Mall ranked the most frequently visited attraction in Virginia, while Potomac Mills mall in Woodbridge came in second, according to the Virginia Tourism Corp. But there’s also history and natural beauty on the top 10 list – including Manassas National Battlefield Park, which ranked ninth last year. Plenty of other Northern Virginia attractions are in the top 25, including the National Air and Space Museum’s Udvar Hazy Center at Dulles, Mount Vernon, Arlington National Cemetery and the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria. id you know Prince William County kids will soon have several new places to play? New playgrounds, sports fields and hiking trails are in the works across the county thanks in part to the Board of Supervisors’ decision earlier this year to spend about $14 million in remaining funds from the 2006 park bond referendum. The board heard from lots of parents and youth sports coaches last spring who said there just aren’t enough baseball, softball, soccer and lacrosse fields to keep up with the county’s growing population. In response, county officials are planning to build new artificial turf fields at six county middle schools, open three new parks -- in Triangle, Catharpin and Gainesville -and install lights and restrooms at several others. New turf fields Prince William County will take a step toward catching up with other Northern Virginia communities with the addition of artificial turf fields at six local middle schools. For games such as lacrosse and soccer artificial turf is preferred because it never develops ruts or bare spots, doesn’t need mowing and can be played on year-round. Installing the fields at the middle schools allows both school teams and youth sports leagues to use them, something not possible at most high schools, where demand for field time by school teams is higher. Saunders and Gainesville middle schools will be the first to receive their new turf fields, scheduled to be open later this fall. Additional turf fields will later be installed at the following middle schools: Benton, Godwin, Graham Park and Woodbridge.

New parks The county will also add a few new parks over the next few years, including: FULLER HEIGHTS PARK IN TRIANGLE. The park is located near Fuller Heights and Old Triangle roads. It’s being planned to include four lighted Little League baseball fields, a multi-purpose rectangular field, a playground and walking trail. Phase I of the project – the first lighted baseball field – will open in October. OCCOQUAN RIVERFRONT PARK. Occoquan’s Mill Street, currently lined with quaint shops and restaurants, will soon boast a new area to stroll along the Occoquan Reservoir, enjoy a picnic and (eventually) take in an outdoor performance. The site, where Mill Street currently ends, is now home to a decommissioned water-treatment plant. Work is set to begin in a few months on the park’s initial features, which will include a riverfront walking trail, picnic areas and a planned outdoor amphitheater. ROLLINS FORD PARK. Planning is also in the works for a new soccer complex at Rollins Ford and Vint Hill roads in Brentsville. The new park is designed to have five soccer fields, a playground and trails. The first field will open in the fall of 2015. The entire complex is scheduled to be complete by spring 2016.

New playgrounds New playground equipment is being installed this month at James S. Long Park in Haymarket and Andrew Leitch Park in Dale City. Both will include separate play areas designed for younger kids (2- to 5-year-olds) and older kids (5- to 15-year olds). Both will also include simulated rock climbing walls and other physically challenging features designed to hold kids’ interest, said Brent Hevner, spokesman for the county’s parks and recreation department. “They are built to encourage both physical and cognitive development and allow children to explore various means of interacting with the environment,” Hevner said. Construction on both new playgrounds began in mid-September and both are expected to be open soon.

New features Veterans Memorial Park saw the opening of two new lighted football fields this year. The fields were also re-graded and feature Bermuda grass (the premier natural surface for a football field). Catharpin Park received lights at two baseball fields, bringing the total number of lighted fields in the park up to five. Other parks receiving more field lighting soon include Nokesville Park, Fairmont Park, Hellwig Park and Cloverdale Park.

id you know that the Interstate 95 Express Lanes are set to open early next year? There’s been a lot of debate about what the lanes will mean in terms of traffic relief, but one thing is certain: You’ll need an EZ Pass Flex transponder if you want to ride the new lanes without paying the tolls, which, during rush hour, could be as high as $24 a trip. Transurban, the Australian company building the Express Lanes, recently published what it believes will be the toll rates for the new roadways. According to Transurban spokesman Mike McGurk, toll amounts will fluctuate with the traffic and there will be no limit to how much drivers might have to pay. The goal of the lanes is to keep traffic flowing at 65 miles per hour, and tolls will tick higher and higher as the lanes clog with cars. “Tolls can go as high as they need to to keep the traffic moving,” McGurk said in a recent interview. “It really depends on what’s going on out there.” Toll-setting involves computers and complicated algorithms, but electronic signs posted at Express Lane entrances will alert drivers to the current rates, which will “lock in” for each tolled portion of the road, McGurk said. The entire 29-mile stretch of tolled lanes will be broken into two “decision points,” which allow different toll rates to be charged for each portion of the lanes. So, say you get on the Express Lanes heading north at Va. 610 in Stafford. The rate of toll you will pay per mile will be displayed near the lanes’ entrances so you can decide if you’re willing to pay. Drivers heading toward Washington will hit another “decision point” just before Heller Road in Fairfax County. There, additional signs will display the rate for the remaining 13 miles of the Express

GUIDE TO JIFFY LUBE LIVE

Jiffy Lube Live in Bristow drawns hundreds of thousands of people per year. JIFFY LUBE

BIG NAME MUSIC IN OUR BACKYARD Aileen Streng astreng@princewilliamtoday.com

Barack Obama chose it for a Northern Virginia rally in 2008 when he was running for president, or that several high schools in Prince William and Fauquier counties hold their graduations there. Naysayers were not pleased when the amphitheater, owned and operated by Live Nation, was renamed Jiffy Lube Live in 2010 due to the new business agreements with Jiffy Lube Washington Area Co-op. Nor were they pleased when in February 2011 it initiated a no-tailgating policy in its parking lots before and after concerts, citing safety concerns. The following year, Jiffy Lube Live stepped back from that, allowing tailgating but with a lengthy set of rules posted

on its website. But the popular concert venue hasn’t missed a beat. Over the years, the amphitheater has hosted summer concerts by Jimmy Buffet, Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, Brad Paisley, Rascal Flats, James Taylor, Pearl Jam, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Aerosmith, Ozzy Osbourne, Judas Priest, Green Day and many more. It has also hosted OzzFest, WMZQFest, Mayhem Festival, Farm Aid and plenty of others. We locals might complain about the traffic created by the concerts, but Jiffy Lube Live does bring the biggest names in music to Prince William County’s backyard.

id you know Jiffy Lube Live, formerly the Nissan Pavilion, opened in 1995 with a performance by The Village People? Or that the hard rock band Kiss recorded its 2004 concert there for its live album “Rock the Nation Live!” Did you know the Bristow amphitheater is where the late saxophonist from the Dave Mathews Band, LeRoi Moore, gave his last performance in 2008? The outdoor amphitheater, one of the largest music performance venues in the Washington area, can seat 25,000 with 15,000 on the lawn and 10,000 in reserved seats.
