FACTS ABOUT THE GAMES WHAT IS IT? The World Police and Fire Games is a biennial athletic event, open to active and retired law-enforcement and fire-service personnel throughout the world.

OPENING CEREMONIES: Friday, June 26, at 6 p.m. Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium in Washington. Gates open at 4 p.m. CLOSING CEREMONIES: Sunday, July 5, at 6 p.m. at the Wolf Trap National Park. Gates open at 4 p.m. ATHLETES VILLAGE: Reston Town Center TICKETS: Admission is free to all spectators at all events. SPORTS: The games include 61 sports for men and women. In addition to traditional sports such as baseball, basketball, soccer, golf, tennis and swimming, the Games include less well-known sports such as firefighter stair climb, police K9, dragon-boat racing, darts, dodgeball and ultimatefirefighter.

ATHLETES: More than 9,000 athletes had registered as of June 2. Athletes are expected from more than 60 countries and all 50 states.

HISTORY: The first World Police & Fire Games was held in 1985 in San Jose, Calif., with subsequent events taking place every two years. Canada will host in 2017 in Montreal, followed by Chengdu, China, in 2019.

ELIGIBILITY: Most sports include different age divisions for men and women. Athletes can enter more than one event, and there is no age limit.

ECONOMIC IMPACT: The Games are expected to generate $60 million to $80 million for the region.

VENUES: There are a total of 53 venues, most in Fairfax County. George Mason University will host 10 events, with Fairfax high schools hosting many more.
