Thank You

With Gratitude We are proud to be at the helm of Inside Out, where we can be a part of the global conversation on the power of arts, advocacy, and representation. Our LGBTQ communities’ stories are thriving, and our artists continue to challenge attitudes and change lives around the world. And none of this would be possible without you! We’re proud to be Canada’s largest LGBT film festival, Toronto’s third largest film festival and the world’s third largest LGBT film festival. Being here is an honour, a privilege and a responsibility we take extremely seriously. Because that responsibility is to YOU –  our members, our audiences, our supporters – our beautiful and diverse communities. We are driven by our goal to bring you the very best in LGBTQ cinema each year, and with the 2017 festival we pushed ourselves further than ever. With a new investment in industry development, including hosting the world’s first LGBTQ-centred film financing event, we took steps to ensure the future of LGBTQ cinema and, in turn, the future of your festival. With an expansion of our youth programming, we took steps to develop our future audiences and foster a love and appreciation for LGBTQ cinema in the next generation. With our Inside Out for All initiative, we took steps toward creating a more accessible festival that reaches and engages all members of our communities. Your continued support is as much a part of the narrative of Inside Out as the work that we do everyday, and we are so grateful to have you on this journey with us. As we move towards our 30th anniversary in 2020, we want to express our deepest gratitude for everything you’ve done to bring us this far – and everything we’ve yet to do together. In gratitude,

Andria Wilson Executive Director

Andrew Murphy Director of Programming

What’s New in 2017

Panel for 195 Lewis, with Rae Leone Allen, Chanelle Aponte Pearson and CBC’s Jean Carter

Thanks to you, it’s been an incredible year. This year, Inside Out featured so many incredible stories, told by some of the most talented LGBTQ storytellers from across the world. You’ve been a big part of sharing these stories and amplifying their impact. With 20 Canadian premieres, 7 international and 5 world premieres, Inside Out has become a destination for contemporary LGBTQ film that is relevant, timely and critical viewing for all in our communities. The amazing documentaries Jewel’s Catch One, Chavela and The Untold Tales of Armistead Maupin shone a spotlight on vital LGBTQ histories and illuminated much about our past, showing us how one person can leave a lasting imprint on LGBTQ community and culture. 2

Two moving documentaries addressing hate –  specifically transphobia – Free CeCe and our Pride screening of The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnston serve as testaments to both the individual and collective strength of those who stand up to hate and lend a voice to those in our communities who are the most vulnerable to attack. Canadian Premieres such as the intensely compelling dramas God’s Own Country, After Louie, Tom of Finland and lesbian romance Signature Move were some of the most beloved by Toronto audiences, and have gone on to screen at other major festivals like Outfest LA and Frameline and win prestigious awards.

Trans Representation in Media panel, with Chase Joynt, Jen Richards and Tiq Milan

In June, Inside Out held the world’s first-ever LGBTQ Finance Forum to help create opportunities for our storytellers to develop their projects. This full day of presentations and one-on-one meetings featured seven Canadian producers with LGBTQ projects in development, matched with business executives who will help take the producers’ films from pitch to production. As another new development, Inside Out hosted new all-star panels to support those who are working in LGBTQ cinema and television. One panel discussed the current representation of transgender people in film and television – this inspired and thought-provoking conversation was led by three award-winning artists and activists. Another panel featured one of the foremost authorities in music supervision (Michael Perlmutter from The Handmaid’s Tale, Queer As Folk) and focused on the successes, challenges and opportunities for LGBTQ musicians and producers to bring music to queer film and television.

It is incredibly significant that the inaugural Inside Out Film Finance Forum has taken place. LGBTQ filmmakers often face very real barriers in getting their projects in front of executives and their films to the marketplace and events like this are key in facilitating greater engagement, support and guidance with the ultimate goal of enabling more LGBTQ filmmakers to have their voices heard. With your help, we’re investing in emerging artists and our future storytellers.

Tyler Oakley on the Rainbow Carpet

Our Toronto festival featured our first Youth Day that drew over 400 students from the Greater Toronto Area – highlights of the day included the young filmmakers panel discussion and an ETALK live interview with LGBTQ activist and YouTube personality, Tyler Oakley. But the most amazing experience that day was seeing the faces of LGBTQ youth light up when they came into a friendly and welcoming place just for them, where they could take photos with each other and some of their role models. As well, Inside Out’s own New Visions, an intergenerational filmmaking mentorship program, and In 4

Your Pocket, a program of short local works made using smartphone technology, screened work by local filmmakers to sold-out audiences.

Thank you for helping to bring the best in LGBTQ film from around the world to you and our many audiences  – and for ensuring that our LGBTQ stories can be told, shared with our communities and beyond, and help lead the way to our collective future.

Non-tokenized access is a huge, amazing thing that Inside Out was able to give me. People from marginalized communities may not have access to large budgets and networks, and it can be quite difficult to break into the film industry. Inside Out was able to help provide tools, knowledge and training to make those first steps possible. It’s so, so important for programs like New Visions and the BravoFACT pitch competition to exist.

This bursary fund was started by longtime supporter Neville Austin to allow more artists to attend the Toronto LGBT Film Festival. Neville’s generous gift provides invaluable experiences to filmmakers and audience members alike.

Bonello Bursary This year, former Inside Out board member Connie Bonello offered to help launch a new bursary fund with a matching gift of $1,500, to allow more women in film to attend the Toronto LGBT Film Festival, present their work and access professional networking opportunities. Nine female filmmakers were able to attend Inside Out with this support.
