Thank You
With Gratitude Earlier this year, we proudly launched our 2018-2020 Strategic Plan – a vision driving Inside Out towards our 30th anniversary and to our future as Canada’s largest LGBTQ film festival and the home of LGBTQ filmmakers internationally. This plan is about innovation, sustainability and accessibility. It is a plan towards making Inside Out a safer space: a space to dream, to create and to connect. It is a plan to build a space for LGBTQ filmmakers and audiences to be their most authentic selves, together. As 2018 comes to its close, we are grateful for this opportunity to share with you some of the work that’s been done this year in support of the goals laid out in this plan – work that has only been made possible because of YOUR generous support. Your contributions remain vital to Inside Out’s operations and our dreams for the future. We do this work for you, with you, and because of you. Inside Out keeps evolving. Our second annual Finance Forum has proved we are becoming an incubator for queer talent. We welcomed more short and feature filmmakers than ever in 2018, representing landmark films covering a raft of stories from conscription (Kanarie), to conversion therapy (The Miseducation of Cameron Post), to gender identity (A Kid Like Jake), to hate crime survival (Love, Scott), to love lost (Malilia: The Farewall Flower). Many were presented as World, International and Canadian premieres that makes us so proud to do what we do and provide space for all of our community’s stories. We can’t wait to have you back with us next year at Inside Out.

Directors from the Local Heroes program
Thank you for making Inside Out a home for LGBTQ filmmakers and for our communities to see themselves onscreen. You’re helping LGBTQ filmmakers share some of the most impactful stories from around the world with more people in our communities. Thanks to you, this year we strengthened community access and involvement through our Inside Out for All initiatives – including a brand new Community VIP seating program aimed to give premium access to under-served LGBTQ audience members, an expanded free ticket program delivered through our Community Partners, as well as a full slate of Youth Day programming and the beloved free weekly matinees for youth and seniors. Our new Community Champions program enlisted the financial support of several organizations to boost these efforts and help engage and involve more people in our communities. We are grateful for the generous support of Pride and Remembrance Run, Rainbow Railroad, Prime Timers, and the 4
OPS Pride Network as founding supporters of this program. You have also helped us continue to make strides in elevating LGBTQ stories and storytellers within the film industry. This year, Inside Out has grown our support to filmmakers with our signature Finance Forum, providing the opportunity for more filmmakers to pitch their work to industry executives like Effie Brown (Project Greenlight, Dear White People) and Howard Rosenman (Call Me By Your Name). As well, our Pitch, Please! juried short film competition, our new RE:Focus Fund to support women and non-binary filmmakers, and our new Innovation Award are all helping more LGBTQ filmmakers bring their stories to life and get them out to the world.

You are investing in our LGBTQ youth to ensure they have access to positive stories, information and support. Through our Youth Day in Toronto and the Rainbow Youth Forum in Ottawa, Inside Out offers high school students the chance to meet with their peers and discuss issues that matter to them. This year, Youth Day and the Rainbow Youth Forum brought in over 1000 students to share a full day of programming – including a shorts program and a panel with young people in media – and they also had opportunities to share their stories with each other and talk about issues they encounter in their everyday lives. The isolation that many young people feel is still all too common, especially among underserved LGBTQ populations – and we believe this can be countered by engaging young people within their communities and offering them relevant, affirming resources. That’s why Inside Out will launch our new Online Catalogue in 2019 to make LGTBQ media arts resources available to educators and community partners across the province. With the recent rollback in sex education in Ontario schools, the timing in developing the Catalogue is even more urgent. Inside Out is committed to making engaging, diverse, multi-lingual LGBTQ resources that are accessible and free, on topics ranging from sexual and gender identity to bullying and self-esteem.
I brought 40 high school students to the youth screening of shorts and it was the highlight of their year! They were mesmerized by the crowd of other rainbow students and gushed about how amazing it felt to be in a room full of positive people and allies. You cannot know what an impact it has on youth to immerse them in their community and give them that gift. ALISON CARSON TEACHER FROM HALTON REGION

Research on LGBTQ representation shows there is a lack of diversity of representation both in mainstream and within the ‘niche’ of LGBTQ media – and that there is much work to be done.
filmmakers, made possible by a generous $25,000 lead gift from Martha McCain. This fund is further supported by individual members and community partners.
The simple truth is that not everyone in our communities has equal access to storytelling through film. Inside Out aims to offer strategic points of intervention to help support the stories of those who historically have been under-represented and help ensure more of their stories get shared with our communities and beyond.
In line with Inside Out’s strategic goal of developing industry support for LGBTQ filmmakers, this year the Fund was used to bring 22 LGBTQ women and non-binary filmmakers to the Festival to share their work and participate in networking, programming and professional development opportunities. The fund is also aimed at creating grants for LGBTQ women and non-binary filmmakers to start, finish or close the gap on their film projects.
As one key example, this year we launched the RE:Focus Fund targeting women and non-binary 6

I applaud the initiative of Inside Out to create a future of greater inclusion and representation for The LGBTQ community in film. With the Re:Focus Fund, Inside Out is helping more LGBTQ voices to be heard. I’m very proud to support their efforts. MARTHA MCCAIN
It was refreshing to participate in a pitch event where we didn’t have to explain the LGBTQ element of the project… where this was not seen as a weakness but an inherent and integral strength. Producer Effie Brown meets with filmmakers in the Finance Forum

Canadian Juried Awards 2018 Canadian Jury Members: Roisin Geraghty, Andrew Gurza, David Ninh Best Canadian Feature ($2,000) (Narrative or Documentary) Sponsored by Entertainment Partners Canada
Love, Scott Directed by Laura Marie Wayne Jury Statement Capturing true intimacy in a subtle and understated way is a very difficult thing to achieve in factual filmmaking. Yet this empathetic film realized this delicate balance with grace and poise. It captured both the trauma and triumph of its character’s journey in a respectful, loving and nuanced way, and exemplified great trust, affection and deference between director and protagonist. We were floored, and truly emotional after watching it. It’s hard to imagine any audience not feeling the same. For its presentation of a beautiful, complex character for the screen, and it’s highly creative and original rendering of the documentary form, the jury are delighted to present the award for Best Canadian Feature to Laura Marie Wayne’s Love, Scott. Emerging Canadian Artist ($2,500 cash, $5,000 equipment rental) Sponsored by RBC Royal Bank & William F. White International

Jury Statement This beautiful, gem of a short spotlighting the bond between a grandchild and her ailing grandmother was filled with moments of deep vulnerability that truly touched all three of us on the jury. As both generations of women reveal themselves in the most intimate way, we were left with an emotional portrait of love, care, and empathy that was transcendent – with the granddaughter’s transgender identity beautifully revealed with unspoken words. We’re very proud to award Luis De Filippis’s deeply artistic For Nonna Anna with the Emerging Canadian Artist Award and look forward to seeing more from this filmmaker.
International Juried Awards 2018 International Jury Members: Trish Bendix, Sarah-Tai Black, Rod Thomas Best First Feature ($2,500)
Retablo (Peru) Directed by Alvaro Delgado Aparicio Jury Statement The jurors were unanimous in praise of the colorful, heartbreaking storytelling of this year’s first feature winner. Set in a part of the world rarely depicted on screen, the powerful tragic drama about family and cultural homophobia and punishment surprised us with its stunning detail, profound performances, and unexpected twist on a coming-of-age narrative. We are proud to present the award for Best First Feature to Alvaro Delgado Aparicio’s Retablo.
This film was made with love for the queer community so it’s really rewarding to be acknowledged by our community. I’m floored. Thank you so much. SCOT T JONES STAR OF LOVE, SCOT T
Awards Inside Out Special Award for Innovation This new $10,000 cash award targets a filmmaker who, in their feature film, demonstrates innovation and a commitment to authentic and positive representation of LGBTQ people. This award was established through Inside Out’s Strategic Innovation Fund, from a generous bequest made by the late James Stewart.
Bixa Travesty (Brazil) Directed by Kiko Goifman & Claudia Priscilla Jury Statement Inside Out’s first Special Award for Innovation goes to a piece that embodies innovation in both its subject matter and presentation. Documenting the life and career of a fierce gender re-defining performance artist, the piece effortlessly explores their work, life and relationships. Stylistically brilliant and factually rich, the piece spotlights the true heart of its subject, seamlessly blending the music and backstory into a captivating narrative that is challenging and provocative but also extremely touching. We’re extremely proud to present the Inside Out Special Award for Innovation to Kiko Goifman and Claudia Pricilla’s Bixa Travesty.
