The perfect proportions of this house have been complemented by subtle, modern decorating, resulting in a pretty and above all comfortable home.

T

he house tucked along Jalan Yasin in Kembangan Estate, is as close as one can get to the perfect home for lovers of the great outdoors. Four storeys high, the house’s sleek glass and steel exterior with a rooftop garden hint at an interior that is very much nature inspired with plenty of greenery to boot.

The meandering stairwell lends a majestic touch and grandeur to this house.

Less is more works well in the main living room. Sleek modern furniture coupled with a light colour theme is a refreshing combination.

Glass stick-on murals are both a stylish alternative to space planning and practical in keeping off cooking fumes from the kitchen.

A dead corner is converted into a cosy sitting area. Throw cushions from Friven & Co.

The cheery orange back splash adds a modern vibe to this simple and spacious kitchen.

This was what the owners wanted – they have two children, a son in his early twenties and a daughter in her early thirties, who is based in China in a professional capacity. The couple in their early fifties are now enjoying a laid-back life and so it was essential that the home is comfortable and easy to run. They also entertain a lot, so there had to be plenty of rooms that worked for parties – a tricky combination at the best of times. James Teng, the interior designer at Inside Story who masterminded the project proceeded with sculpting its interiors starting from a magnificent open stairwell which spirals up to the rooftop. In keeping with a light and airy feel, the interior colour scheme features all blond marble floors and crisp white washed walls. Even the wood and steel balustrades are skeletal to ensure that the stairwell is filled with ample natural light. Aside from the last floor, which is where the rooftop garden is, each floor holds two bedrooms on either side. All bedrooms in the house are designed with an en-suite bathroom, walk-in closet and picture window, while the master suite on the second floor has an extended balcony with plenty of room to sit and enjoy the scenery.

An en-suite bathroom is made all the more cosy with interesting wall tiles. On the counter top: soap dispensers from Zone Denmark. Hand towels and bath towels, all from Friven & Co.

For commonly shared spaces such as the exercise room and kitchen, the designer has cleverly used stick-on murals on pull-out glass doors – a stylish alternative to plain sliding glass doors many would have used. The house’s modern and simplistic interior complements perfectly its outdoor landscaping. No space is wasted in this house. At the ground floor, the side of the house has been converted into an outdoor entertaining space by installing timber strip floors and awnings. There are bi walls but only vertical gardens

in this space, a testament to the owner’s love for greenery. A sizeable Koi pond housing the owner’s favourite pets, also sits amongst the luscious greenery. Above all, this house exudes a certain laidback air, with extremely comfortable nofuss furniture and soothing natural landscape to feast the eyes on at any time of the day.
