O UR M I S S I O N Our mission is to bring orchestra music to young children in the greater Denver metropolitan community, cultivating music appreciation and enhancing their education through an engaging first-hand experience with the orchestra.

O UR VA L U E S INCREASE EQUITY Increase equity among metro Denver’s communities by reducing barriers to the performing arts and ensuring that orchestra music is accessible, approachable, and enjoyable for all children. RESPECT THE CHILDREN Respect the children we serve by providing relevant, authentic, engaging, and professional programming. LISTEN TO THE COMMUNITY Listen to the community and anticipate needs by soliciting and incorporating feedback from all stakeholders, including attendees, musicians, volunteers, and donors. DEMONSTRATE THE IMPORTANCE Demonstrate that the arts are important to community health and vitality by providing fair compensation to artists, promoting arts education, and cultivating a lifelong appreciation of the arts in young audiences.

OUR CO M MITM E N T S

Music can be an extraordinarily powerful tool for connection and change. We are committed to living the values of diversity, equity, inclusion, and access. We are passionate about the world of the orchestra being a place for everyone. Reducing barriers to access, cultivating diverse audiences, electing and recruiting representational leadership, and creating spaces where people from all backgrounds and demographics have a voice in our work – are all key components of what we do. We understand that we have more work to do, and that our work will never be finished. We understand that the world of the orchestra has a history of exclusion. In working with the youngest members of our community, we especially have the opportunity – and the obligation – to make change. We believe it is on us to reinvent the orchestra experience for children and that, through this work, we can build a path for a more equitable future in the world of the orchestra. As we do this, we will not assume that the traditions of the orchestra are the right way forward. We will work for change by questioning and challenging the established assumptions and perceptions of the orchestral world. We know that orchestra music is only one tiny slice of a vast global landscape of artistic experiences. While we love the orchestra and believe deeply in all it has to offer, we reject the premise upheld by so many institutions throughout history that orchestra music is inherently superior to other art forms. We will continue to create space to celebrate and honor the arts and artists from diverse cultures. You can learn more about our programmatic agreements and policies on our website. M E SSAGE FR O M T H E E X E C UT I V E DI R E C T O R Wow. What a truly dramatic year at Inside the Orchestra. We welcomed thousands of little ones (and their adults) inside the orchestra – in a wider variety of ways than ever before. Through most of the season, school programs were flourishing, public concerts were running smoothly, and we were debuting our most elaborate Tiny Tots concert series ever – one that took over two years of planning to bring to life. Tiny Tots: Music of the World. You’ll see that program highlighted in a few pages. Then, of course, March arrived – and Inside the Orchestra was facing a dilemma unlike any in the organization’s history. Sudden limitations on public gatherings meant taking the kids to the orchestra — and the orchestra to the kids — was impossible. Sadly, the pandemic has pushed many of our fellow performing arts organizations to go dark during this time. We’ve chosen to do the opposite. You can learn more about the “Outside the Orchestra” initiative in a few pages as well. The impact of our virtual programming has been felt around the globe. In fact, we’ve heard from kids and adults all over the United States, in Australia, in France, and in dozens of other countries. The pandemic has stopped our in-person concerts, for the time being, but it’s also allowed our reach to go much further in new and unexpected ways. While the circumstances have changed, our mission has not. We will make sure we are bringing music to kids wherever they are because music education matters, now more than ever. And we will continue to figure out how to make music with and for kids, no matter what. Musically,

Shelby Mattingly Executive Director

Musical themes including Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, Music of the World, and Play with Music - Let’s Get Moving! “As a grandparent, this is EXACTLY the kind of experience I want to share with my grandchildren. Thanks bunches!” “I thought this was the best Tiny Tots performance we have been to. The diversity of performance and music was such an enriching experience and I know my children enjoyed it.” “I loved the 14yo singer, she was amazing! And my girls were starry-eyed watching her. I also loved the way that the different cultures were included in instruments, dancing, and singing - much more than just a footnote and instead really what it was all about... feeling, watching, and listing to all the music in a new way.”

Provided 27 in-person follow-up programming and mini-sessions, serving an additional 691 children. “Thank you for creating and making this wonderful program available to the low-income, underserved populations within our community.” “This program educated, engaged, entertained and enthralled the students.” “Our younger students were wide-eyed and mesmerized by the sudden changes in tones and the different sounds of instruments - the oboe playing a middle eastern piece, the kettle drums sound vibrating, the double bass player playing the high and low notes really close to them in a good natured way! For our older students I think the highlights were the beautiful dancing and movement of Maria and especially your Opera singer... They were searching for his/her voice and he blended in with the crowd as the anticipation built. When he did start singing - I saw collective students jaws drop - hearing opera maybe for the first time, He moved around the auditorium effortlessly and held the audience with Figaro! and his incredible vocal range. Bravissimo!”

SPOTLI G H T: MUSIC O F TH E W O R L D In February 2020, we presented Tiny Tots: Music of the World to 4,261 attendees at five different venues. The Music of the World program series was designed to give little ones the chance to engage with music, instruments, dance, and performances from cultures all over the globe. The repertoire featured music from 14 countries, and over 50 performers were involved in each production. By highlighting local artists through collaborations with each of these organizations/artists, kids from all over metro Denver got the opportunity to learn about, connect to, engage with music and art forms from around the world, as presented by local Colorado artists. Featured artists included Cleo Parker Robinson Dance, Margaret Ozaki Graves, Raquel Garcia, and Deepali Lindblom of Roshni.

S P O T LIGHT: O UT S I D E THE ORCH ESTR A On Monday, March 16, Inside the Orchestra rolled out the beginning of our “Outside the Orchestra” initiative. Outside the Orchestra’s digital content ranges widely, and includes no-prep-no-mess activities, themed playlists, performance videos, hands-on STEAM experiments, music games, and educational videos about the orchestra and its instruments — just to name a few. First, it was daily emails, full of digital content for parents and teachers to bring music and art to kids at home. Then it was bringing our entire 2021 season online in three languages, highlighting over thirty performers through virtual concert experiences, hosting virtual field trips and zoom sessions for kids in the US and Europe, providing expanded learning materials, and publishing activity books to be sent to homes and schools. It’s making a difference. Our music resources are being used by parents and teachers, at home and in school, across the country and across the globe. Our musicians are performing for and educating children in Colorado and across the country who are signed up for virtual Tiny Tots – and thousands of them are from underserved communities and are given access for free. Inside the Orchestra will continue to innovate in response to the pandemic, and we are dedicated to serving our mission - no matter what. Online programming usage globally, March - June 2020

Mubarak Agok and staff member Lauren Harrison

Through a partnership with DPS Schools and DPS CareerConnect, Inside the Orchestra was delighted to continue our internship program throughout the 19-20 season. CareerConnect is a comprehensive program that pairs industry-focused classroom instruction with work-based learning opportunities at the middle and high school level. Our six interns worked more than 600 hours collectively, on everything from marketing to donor stewardship, program design to video editing. We were honored to work with all of them. Special shout out to Mubarak for staying with Inside the Orchestra for two semesters, and to the summer interns - Yareli, Alek, Enzo, and Sophia - who did their entire internship online.

TESTIMONIALS “Overall one of the best organized events for kids in the Denver area…my daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed the songs, dances, info packet, multiple email communications prior to event, narrator during event, opportunity to talk to artists and try out instruments. This was my second Tiny Tots experience and they were both very different but I am excited to bring my daughter to another performance in a couple of months!”

“The music selections were great! Videos were entertaining and my kids were dancing around the kitchen like the kids on the screen! It was great!”

“Thank you for your incredible work. I loved music as a kid but never had experiences like this. I’m so glad to get to share music in this way with my child.”

“I sat on the floor with the classes and to see their eyes come alive with the first few notes of the sound of the Orchestra is a sight I will remember a long time. Teacher’s still talk about the program, telling me it has been the best they have had at our school.”

“It was well put together as a full program, captured and kept my children’s attention, increased their musical knowledge and appreciation, and they were following along with the movements and answering the questions out loud.”

“This was the best thing I’ve taken my children to.”
