OUR MISSION

The mission of Inside the Orchestra is to bring orchestra music to young children in the greater Denver metropolitan community, cultivating music appreciation and enhancing their education through an engaging first-hand experience with the orchestra.

OUR VALUES INC RE A S E EQ U I T Y

Increase equity among metro Denver’s communities by

reducing barriers to the performing arts and ensuring that orchestra music is accessible, approachable, and enjoyable for all children.

R E S P E C T T HE C HI L DRE N

Respect the children we serve by providing relevant, authentic, engaging, and professional programming.

L IS TE N T O T HE C O MMU N ITY

Listen to the community and anticipate needs by soliciting and incorporating feedback from all stakeholders, including attendees, musicians, volunteers, and donors.

D E MON S T R AT E T HE IMP ORTA N C E

Demonstrate that the arts are important to community health and vitality by providing fair compensation to artists, promoting arts education, and cultivating a lifelong appreciation of the arts in young audiences.

MESSAGE FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR In this time of reflection, as we finish one season and move to the next, I think it’s important to share what we at Inside the Orchestra believe in. We believe in inclusiveness and equity. In the 2017-18 season, of the more than 21,000 people served by our programming, thousands received financial consideration, with more than half paying a reduced rate or nothing at all. In our school program, we prioritize high-need schools, and we do not require payment to bring our programs to a school. It is essential to our inclusivity goal to keep our programs available at little to no cost. We believe in every child’s innate ability to learn about the world around them, and our programming is created to engage and excite children – to get each child to listen and look at their communities and themselves in new ways. Our programs strive to honor the growing mind of each and every child, nurture their creative spirits, and open them up to a world of cultural vibrancy from the first downbeat to the very last note. We believe in listening. We like to ask questions – a lot of questions. And we don’t just file the answers away – your answers to our questions have defined some of the most fundamental aspects of our work in the last year. Through evaluation forms, focus groups, in-person conversations, and community outreach, our ears are open to the metro Denver community. Your voice is essential to our work. We believe that the arts matter. Not only do they matter to young minds and hearts, but they matter as part of the bottom line of a thriving economy. In Denver alone, the SCFD arts and culture community created 1.9 billion dollars in economic activity (through organization spending and spending of attendees), provided 11,820 jobs, and served 15 million attendees. That was just in 2017. We believe that the arts are critically important, and we demonstrate that through fair compensation, education, and decades of commitment to the arts community of metro Denver. As we look to the future seasons, we will continue to strive to listen, to share, to respect, and to make beautiful music for the families, schools, and children of metro Denver. Thank you for joining us.

Shelby Mattingly Executive Director

OUR MAIN PROGRAMS TIN Y TOTS

Designed for children six and under, Tiny Tots gives young ones the chance to interact with the conductor and musicians and learn about the instruments. The music selection, design, and scripting are geared to connect very young children with music – physically, emotionally, and mentally.

INSIDE THE ORCHESTRA FOR SCHOOLS An interactive program geared toward students in K-8th grade. The repertoire and scripting are designed to support and enhance school curricula. Programs are offered in English and bilingual (Spanish) formats, with the bilingual program featuring Latino composed and influenced music.

S OLOIS T P ROGRAM

Young soloists perform with the orchestra during the programs, demonstrating peer success to our young audiences. This serves as a valuable launch pad for future performance opportunities, giving soloists experience, confidence, and inspiration to pursue their talents.

FA MILY C ON CERTS

Designed to get families and children of all ages “inside the orchestra,” the family concerts incorporate components of our school and Tiny Tots programs.

INSIDE THE ORCHESTRA FOR ADULTS

Our one adult-focused event all year, this signature fundraiser raises money for our programs, while giving adults a chance to play, party, and step inside the orchestra.

“The entire performance was magical. My students were dancing, pretending to be the conductor, and were entranced by the music the entire time. You brought in humor, engagement from the children, and so many elements of art - opera, dance, and instrumental performances.”

“I cannot emphasize enough what an invaluable experience this was for our scholars. This was true enrichment-exposure and context to the arts that would otherwise be absent from our students’ lives.” “The look of pure wonder & complete awe of the musical sounds that my children have at tiny tots is something that I feel truly blessed to experience as a parent. A truly unique and special experience for our family every time!”
