STATEMENT OF ACTIVITIES

25 3

OUR MISSION The mission of Inside the Orchestra is to bring orchestra music to young children in the greater Denver metropolitan community, cultivating music appreciation and enhancing their education through an engaging ďŹ rsthand experience with the orchestra.

4

OUR VAL UE S INCREASE EQUITY Increase equity among metro Denver’s communities by reducing barriers to the performing arts and ensuring that orchestra music is accessible, approachable, and enjoyable for all children. RESPECT THE CHILDREN Respect the children we serve by providing relevant, authentic, engaging, and professional programming. LISTEN TO THE COMMUNITY Listen to the community and anticipate needs by soliciting and incorporating feedback from all stakeholders, including attendees, musicians, volunteers, and donors. DEMONSTRATE THE IMPORTANCE Demonstrate that the arts are important to community health and vitality by providing fair compensation to artists, promoting arts education, and cultivating a lifelong appreciation of the arts in young audiences.

M E SSAGE FR O M T H E E X E C UT I V E DI R E C T O R What a wonderful year! We were delighted to welcome 23,500 inside the orchestra. At Tiny Tots, we explored the world of animals in the fall, took a musical journey through the seasons in the winter, and blasted off into outer space in the spring. We welcomed new guest artists into our programming, expanded our homeschool offerings, and brought more bilingual programs into metro Denver schools than ever before. We also expanded our programming into smaller group sessions, getting kids hands-on with instruments and exploring the science of sound in classrooms. Inside the Orchestra is unique to Colorado – and one-of-a-kind in the country – as the only professional orchestra focusing solely on serving the needs of children. Because of that focus on children’s programming, we spend a lot of time exploring how kids learn, how they connect with their environment, and how best to engage with their innate desire to discover the world around them. We work to keep our programs responsive to the communities we serve, and create an environment that is engaging, educational, experiential, and fun! We are passionate about the world of the orchestra being a place for everyone. Working to cultivate spaces where all children feel welcomed, seen, and heard are key components of every Inside the Orchestra program. We strive to put the needs of children first – and take down barriers that can exist between the audience and the orchestra. We are grateful to be a part of the Colorado community, to bring musical adventures to children (and their grownups) all throughout the metro area. We have so very much in store for the coming seasons, and we can’t wait to share it all with you. Musically,

Shelby Mattingly Executive Director 6

CORE PROGR AM S TINY TOTS Experiential concerts for kids six and under (and their adults!). Attendees are seated on the floor and encircled by our 30+ piece orchestra. Music selection, program design, and scripting are all geared to connect young children with music – physically, emotionally, and mentally. INSIDE THE ORCHESTRA FOR SCHOOLS Interactive programming geared toward students in K-8th grade. The repertoire and scripting are designed to support and enhance school curricula. Programs are offered in English and bilingual (Spanish) formats, with the bilingual program featuring Latino composed and influenced music. HOMESCHOOL CONCERTS All-age programs for homeschool students and their families. Children are encouraged to think creatively, musicians will give short demonstrations, and students will get to think critically and creatively about the music.

Musical themes from animals to changing seasons, holidays to outer space! “My child loved the live music as well as the free environment to move, get up, look all around, and experience the music in a physical way.” “Thank you! We love, love Tiny Tots!!! Thank you for bringing the music alive. It makes such an impression.” “Every single person affiliated with this group was kind, efficient and pleasant…I was blown away with the kindness of all involved even before we entered the concert.”

and for homeschool students

Continued expansion of bilingual programming, which is now provided regularly in Adams, Arapahoe, and Denver counties Provided in-person follow-up programming and mini-sessions at 12 schools/venues, serving an additional 738 children

“I am so grateful for the programming you provide. It is a true blessing to the students (and to the staff). I’m certain that your availability is limited by resources, both human and financial, but I would wish that you could/would/can/ will serve even more schools, especially our neediest, most disadvantaged schools.

9

ADDITIONAL PROGRAMMING SENSORY FRIENDLY PROGRAMS Immersive concerts that are modified to ensure there are no startling noises or visually over stimulating components. FAMILY CONCERTS Programs get families and children of all ages “inside the orchestra.” The family concerts incorporate components of our school and Tiny Tots programs and are designed for all ages. STUDENT SOLOISTS Young soloists perform with the orchestra during select programs, demonstrating peer success to our young attendees. FOLLOW UP PROGRAMS AND MINI SESSIONS Students explore the science of sound, get handson at instrument petting zoos, learn how to conduct an orchestra, and adventure through music of the world.

10

PA RTY WITH A P URP O S E Over 300 superheroes joined us to activate their powers to provide music programs to metro Denver children.
