OUR MISSION
Inside the Orchestra brings music to children, cultivating music appreciation and enhancing their education through engaging, interactive experiences with orchestral music.
OUR VALUES
• Increase equity among metro Denver’s communities by reducing barriers to the performing arts and ensuring that orchestra music is accessible, approachable, and enjoyable for all children.
• Respect the children we serve by providing relevant, authentic, engaging, and professional programming.
• Listen to the community and anticipate needs by soliciting and incorporating feedback from all stakeholders, including attendees, musicians, volunteers, and donors.
• Demonstrate that the arts are important to community health and vitality by providing fair compensation to artists, promoting arts education, and cultivating a lifelong appreciation of the arts in young audiences.
MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Dear Friends,
While we continued to be impacted by COVID during our 2021-22 fiscal year, we had much to celebrate, and we couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you!
Our talented musicians continued to make music and to bring the orchestra to students throughout the metro community, and thanks to our virtual programming, the world. Inside the Orchestra continued to adapt and we are particularly proud that throughout the pandemic, we NEVER stopped providing high quality musical programming for young people.
In August 2021, we returned to in-person Tiny Tots performances, with Let’s Be Silly, bringing live performances to more than 4,000 children and their families throughout the year. The winter season brought the rise of OMICRON, which meant we needed to focus on providing virtual content in order to keep everyone in our community as safe as possible. We were pleased to present virtual performances of Music of the World during the winter season, with a return to live performances of the production in the summer.
We also returned to classrooms, reaching more than 2,000 students with in-person programming. And we released new virtual content - the Virtual Resource Hub. This highly curated curriculum includes resources teachers can use as a full-year framework or they can pull out individual videos, lesson plans, activities and games to use in their classrooms. The Virtual Resource Hub continues to be free to schools throughout Colorado and around the world. All in all, Over 68,000 students from 13 different countries signed up for virtual programs in 21-22.
Thanks to the community, Inside the Orchestra remained fiscally sound throughout the pandemic. Because of you, our 2020 and 2021 fundraising campaigns were our highest ever and our fundraising event Through the Looking Glass, was the highest-grossing fundraising event we’ve ever had. We were also the grateful recipients of a variety of relief funding/build back grants from the state and federal government including a Colorado Arts Relief grant and a Shuttered Venue Operators grant.
As we look to the future seasons, we will continue to strive to listen, to share, to respect, and to bring musical experiences to families, schools, and children of metro Denver. We can’t wait to see you and your families this year as we come together to celebrate orchestral music. We simply couldn’t do what we do without you.
Thank you for your support!
Warmest Regards,
The Board of Directors - Inside the OrchestraCORE PROGRAMS SPOTLIGHT:
TINY TOTS RETURN IN PERSON
TINY TOTS
Experiential concerts for kids seven and under (and their adults). Attendees are seated on the floor and encircled by our 30+ piece orchestra. Music selection, program design, and scripting are all geared to connect young children with music - physically, emotionally, and mentally.
INSIDE THE ORCHESTRA FOR SCHOOLS
Interactive programming geared toward students in K-8th grade. The repertoire and scripting are designed to support and enhance school curricula. Programs are offered in English and bilingual (Spanish) formats, with the bilingual program featuring Hispanic composed and influenced music.
VIRTUAL CONTENT
Online resources for children in preschool-8th grade. Free resources include online musical games that explore instruments, musical concepts, and creation, themed playlists, stand-alone activities and expanded lesson plans. Additional in-depth platforms including Virtual Tiny Tots and Virtual Resource Hub platforms provide music educators with valuable resources to engage young learners at home and at school.
In February of 2020, we hosted our final live Tiny Tots performances before the pandemic shut the world down. After 18 long months of presenting Tiny Tots exclusively online, we returned to in-person Tiny Tots performances in August of 2021 with our Tiny Tots: Let’s Get Silly concert series. Audiences heard silly instrument sounds, explored emotions and made funny faces along with the music, played freeze dance with the orchestra, and were treated to performers from multiple partner organizations including Denver Center for the Performing Arts, Montbello Drumline, and Central City Opera.
Tiny Tots: Let’s Get Silly brought our Tiny Tots orchestra outdoors for the first time, with performances happening outside in public parks and green spaces, kicking off a new tradition of outdoor summer performances.
I absolutely love Tiny Tots. I worked at an elementary school in Denver years ago and would always volunteer to accompany the ECE classes, and I’m so grateful this opportunity is still available for my daughter. I love the creativity used to engage the kids with the music, the suggested activities, and the accessibility for the kids to be close to and see the instruments.
SPOTLIGHT: VIRTUAL CONTENT
In the fall of 2021, we released our Virtual Resource Hub, free to schools around Colorado and the whole world. The Virtual Resource Hub contains a variety of highly curated programs and resources for teachers to use with students in preschool through 6th grade, including:
• Virtual Curriculum: Organized into monthly topics and weekly lessons, teachers can use this resource as a full-year framework for music education or pull out individual videos, lesson plans, activities, or games to use in their classroom. Diversity and equity in composers, performers, and artistic styles are woven throughout the curriculum as students learn about the full, rich world of the orchestra.
• Virtual Tiny Tots: Eight unique program platforms with video performances, lesson plans, online games and offline activities all based on different themes.
• Composer Card Platform: Interact digitally with our custom Composer Card Deck, featuring diverse composers from the last 1000 years
• Additional Resources: A robust platform of educational and entertaining music games and themed playlists.

5 years ago, my 5yo and 4yo attended an Inside the Orchestra Tiny Tots performance. I have a picture of my 4yo daughter gazing up at the flautist and my 5yo chatting with the violins. Now, that 5yo has grown into a 5th grader who decided to take up violin this year, and the 4yo is a 4th grader who is playing flute in band. Thanks for making a difference!
