Family Music Fest
About Us We firmly believe that introducing children to the arts at a young age strengthens not only that child but the community as well. In an effort to be inclusive of all children, we underwrite our concerts, thus providing an experience that is otherwise unavailable to many communities.
Our Main Programs
All of our programs get children literally inside the orchestra as they are seated on the floor and surrounded by our professional musicians. Performances include diverse music and feature opera singers from Central City Opera, modern dancers from Hannah Kahn Dance Company or Kim Robards Dance, and a student soloist.
Tiny Tots
Geared towards children ages 6 & under, their families, and schools, Tiny Tots seats the audience inside of a 30+ piece orchestra. Concerts are held in locations all around the Denver metro area, from Parker to Boulder and in between.
Inside the Orchestra for Schools
A 14+ piece orchestra outreach program for k-8 school children. Both the repertoire and approach to learning are designed to support and enhance the school curricula. Schools also receive in-depth follow-up sessions with our conductor.
Additional Programs
Inside the Orchestra offers programs for children with sensory processing disorders and adults with dementia through partnerships with the Autism Society and Alzheimers Association. We also have one exciting, adultsonly event a year, Inside the Orchestra for Adults. Learn more about it on our website or on page 10 of this program.

If you're early, feel free to take a walk around the room and check out the awesome vendors. The activities aren't open yet, but they'd love to tell you about what they do. Otherwise, grab a seat in the center of the musicians.
10:00 AM: Tiny Tots Performance
Enjoy the performance. Afterwords, feel free to go up to the musicians and say hi - they'll show you their instruments and talk about what they do. Just make sure you ask before touching an instrument.
10:45 AM-1:30 PM: Â Get Hands On!

Check out the schedule and maps on the next few pages to get yourself oriented, and then grab a seat for the Tiny Tots performance! We encourage movement throughout the Tiny Tots program. Feel free to let your little ones get up, dance, and participate in the interactive moments. Please be mindful of musicians and other attendees. Look in the program notes for the interactive elements that are highlighted in blue text. Have any questions, comments, or concerns? Find either a Tiny Tots volunteer in a white t-shirt or an Inside the Orchestra staff member in a red t-shirt and we'll be happy to help!

Conductors Tom Jensen, Music Director Celebrating his 31st season with Inside the Orchestra, Thomas H. Jensen, a seasoned conductor, musician, educator and voice talent, was hired to design and implement the Inside the Orchestra programs in 1985. Prior to that, he earned his degree in Music and Conducting from Hamline University in Minnesota and did his graduate work at Texas Christian University. He founded and served as Music Director of the Youth Orchestra of San Antonio, served as Music Director of the Twin City Institute for Talented Youth, Music Director of the Colorado Ballet and the Joffrey Ballet, and Guest Conductor of the Denver Chamber Orchestra, Royal Winnipeg Ballet, and Nashville Ballet. “Conductor Tom” loves to captivate audiences, young and old, with enthusiasm and flair.
Steven Aguiló-Arbues Associate Conductor and Director of School Pograms Steven Aguiló-Arbues enjoys his various roles as a conductor, vocal coach, recitalist, and répétiteur. He has served on the faculties and coaching staffs of Manhattan School of Music, Centro Studi Lirica (Italy), Metropolitan State University of Denver, and Crested Butte Music Festival. Mr. Aguiló-Arbues not only works with Inside the Orchestra as an associate conductor, but he is also the associate music director for The Renaissance Project Choir, performs regularly with the Central City Opera Ensemble Artists, and has been on Opera Colorado’s music staff since 2008. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Colorado (Boulder) and a Master of Music degree and Professional Studies Certificate from Manhattan School of Music. Mr. Aguiló-Arbues is also fluent in Spanish and English, helping him to communicate with countless students while educating them in music.

Program Notes 20th Century Fox Theme - Newman (1901-1970) It's hard to have ever seen a movie and not know this iconic theme! Originally written in 1933, it didn't make it's permanent appearance at the beginning of each film until the debut of Star Wars in the 1970's and has been used ever since. This music sounds like "once upon a time" - the beginning of a story. Pas de Deux from the Nutcracker Suite - Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) Though it's become one of the most-attended holiday performances around, The Nutcraker was not a success when it was premiered! The Pas de Deux is a dance for the Sugar Plum Fairy and Prince Coqueluche. It is part of the entertainment for Clara in the kingdom of sweets as her reward for saving the Nutcraker and defeating the Mouse King. It occurs towards the end of the second act of the ballet. Children will learn about the musical scale. Sesame Street Theme Song - Joe Raposo (1937-1989) "Can You Tell Me How to Get to Sesame Street?" has been used as the show's theme song since it premiered in 1969 and is the oldest song in the show;s history. Know the words? Sing along with us! Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy from The Nutcracker Suite In the original ballet, the Dance of the Sugar Plus fairy features the solo ballerina. The choreographer wanted this music to sound like "drops of water shooting from a fountain." To make this happen, Tchaikovsky chose to compose the piece featuring the band newly invented celeste, which looks like a piano but sounds like bells. This is music that sounds breakable. Habanera from Carmen - Bizet (1838-1875) The Habanera is one of the most famous arias from Bizet's opera Carmen. Bizet actually adapted music by the composer Sebastiรกn Yradier for the Habanera because he incorrectly thought it was a traditional folk-tune though it had only actually been written 10 years prior! In this aria, the mezzo-soprano sings about love's fleeting nature. Central City Opera will be performing Carmet this summer - visit their website to get tickets! Fingal's Cave Oveture - Mendelssohn (1809-1847) Also known as The Hebrides, this overture was inspired by a trip Mendelssohn made to Fingal's Cave, an island cave, in Scotland. This piece is sometimes thought of as an early tone poem as it depicts a mood and sets a scene. Kids will be asked to make waves with their arms along with the music.
Also Sprach Zarathustra - Mendelssohn (1809-1847) The opening fanfare from Also Sprach Zarathustra, titled "Sunrise," is also an example of a tone poem. Also Sprach has been used in tv and movies, and is most famously known in pop culture for its use in Space Odyssey. Have your kids stand up and grow with the music by kneeling on the ground and standing up as the music gets louder. Sonata in E Major - Scarlatti Scarlatti spent much of his life as the court composer for the Portuguese and Spanish royal families. He wrote 555 keyboard sonatas during his lifetime. This one was scored for orchestra from centuries after his death. Kids will learn that a choreographer is like a puppeteer. La Virgen de la Macarena - Traditional This piece is a traditional Spanish song that was originally composed as church music, though it's nothing like the church music we hear today! Its popularity increased after it was made famous by the Mexican virtuoso trumpet player Raphael Mendez. Pay attention to the trumpet here! Symphony no. 5 and no. 9, Coriolan Overture - Beethoven (1770-1827) These three pieces by Beethoven will be used to show the different ways composers can start a piece of music. Symphony no. 5 starts out loud and sudden, Symph. no 9 begins slower and quieter, and the Coriolan Oveture sounds like someone playing peek-a-boo. Symphony in C - Bizet (1838-1875) Bizet wrote this symphony when he was only 17 years old as a student at the Paris Conservatoire. It was not premiered until 1935, 60 years after his death, and it was an immediate success. This music sounds like chasing your dog around the neighborhood after it has escaped- kids will pretend to look for the puppy. 1812 Overture - Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) This piece was composed by Tchaikovsky to commemorate Russia's victory against Napoleon in 1812. It is famously known for its final fanfare which has parts composed for actual cannons (sorry, we don't have cannons here with us today!). It is often played at outdoor concerts on the 4th of July to accompany fireworks. We'll get to skip to the end of the piece here, just like skipping over your veggies to dessert. Kids will get to march along. Main Theme from Star Wars- Williams (1937- ) The Main Theme is an iconic piece of music from the Star Wars score. John Williams was actually inspired by the 20th Century Fox Theme heard earlier and even wrote this piece in the same key!
