TOURNAMENT GALOP LOUIS MOREAU GOTTSCHALK

IN THE PERFORMANCE Louis Moreau Gottschalk was an American composer and pianist who was best known for his piano compositions and performances. He was well-known during his life in Europe where he spent most of his career. Tournament Galop is one of his lesser known pieces. Listen for the fast sounds of galloping horses. Run in place as you listen to this speedy piece.

TOY SYMPHONY LEOPOLD MOZART IN THE PERFORMANCE There is some debate about who actually composed this piece of music, but right now the best guess is Leopold Mozart. Leopold is the more famous Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's father. The Toy Symphony music includes parts for all sorts of toys, like bird whistles and ratchets, but in the program our musicians are going to get even more creative (and silly!) with the noise-makers they choose. Watch and listen to their silly sounds.

HAVE FUN WITH THE MUSIC You'll see our musicians make some silly sounds on their instruments during this piece. You and your little one(s) can make your own silly sounds at home by creating your own DIY instruments. THE FLYING TRAPEZE GEORGE LEYBOURNE GASTON LYLE

IN THE PERFORMANCE The Flying Trapeze, also called The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze, is a song about a real trapeze circus performer, Jules Léotard (yes, leotards were named after him!). It was composed in 1867, though it really became a hit in the 1900s. As you listen to this piece, pretend to balance on a tight-rope or balance beam like a circus performer.

HAVE FUN WITH THE MUSIC During The Flying Trapeze in Tiny Tots, young ones will be able to get on their feet and work on gross motor balance skills as they listen to the performance. Yoga is another wonderful gross motor activity for children as it combines physical skill practice with mindfulness and work on patience. Take it up a notch with these fun "circus yoga" poses.

NORWEGIAN DANCE EDVARD GRIEG IN THE PERFORMANCE Edvard Grieg is a Norwegian composer and pianist who used Norwegian folk music in his compositions. He is best-known for the Peer Gynt Suite, with famous pieces like Morning Mood and In the Hall of the Mountain King. Norwegian Dance is originally a piano piece written for two pianos, but during the Tiny Tots program, you'll hear a silly conversation between two very opposite instruments instead: the piccolo and the tuba. Pretend to play the piccolo or tuba along with the music as you listen.

HAVE FUN WITH THE MUSIC Color and cut out the piccolo in your activity book or find an extra copy here to print and color. You can pretend to play your piccolo along with the music as you listen to the piccolo (one of the highest instruments) have a conversation with the tuba (one of the lowest instruments).


PICKLES AND PEPPERS ADALINE SHEPHERD

IN THE PERFORMANCE Adaline Shepherd was an American composer. Even though she did not compose many pieces, the music she did write was popular. Her music was unknown for a some decades after she got married (even much of her family didn't know about it!), but become better known after her death. Pickles and Peppers is a rag, a style of music with bouncy, uneven rhythms. Dance along as you listen to this fun piece.

EMOTIONS MEDLEY VARIOUS COMPOSERS IN THE PERFORMANCE A medley is music that brings together many other pieces of music. You'll hear four pieces with very different moods during this medley: Sabre Dance by Aram Khatchaturian, The Happy Farmer by Robert Schumann, Symphony no. 7 by Ludwig van Beethoven, and Entry of the Gladiators by Julius Fucik. As you listen to this piece, make different faces that correspond to how the music feels: angry, happy, sad, and silly.

PANTALON AMY BEACH

IN THE PERFORMANCE Amy Beach was an American composer and pianist and was one of the first successful American female composers of symphonies and other large-scale music. She was also very well-known as a pianist and wrote many pieces for piano, including Pantalon which is from her piece called Children's Carnival. Children's Carnival is a 5-movement piano piece, with each movement featuring a different kid-friendly theme or image. Pantalon is meant to sound like a silly clown walking around whose pants keep falling off! As you listen, pretend to be a clown wearing silly pants.

MONTBELLO DRUMLINE IN THE PERFORMANCE Welcome the Montbello Drumline during this piece! A drumline is an ensemble of marching percussion instruments that are designed specifically to project sound to be used in very large spaces, indoors and outdoors. The Montbello Drumline is a group of high school students from the Montbello neighborhood. Montbello Drum Line promotes the growth and development of all members as musicians, leaders, and active members of Montbello, the Far Northeast region of Denver, and the Denver Metro community. Listen to and watch their upbeat percussion sounds!

HAVE FUN WITH THE MUSIC Check out this awesome video from Atlanta Drum Academy Drumline as they dedicate this show to the little kids on the drum line known as the minis and the duos, also called The Little Big Shots. Drum along with them at home!


LIVERY STABLE BLUES RAY LOPEZ

IN THE PERFORMANCE This piece was made famous in 1917 and was part of the first jazz record ever recorded. It was very successful and was possibly the first popular music release to sell a million copies. In the Tiny Tots performance, we'll hear our brass instruments perform this jazzy piece full of barn animal sounds. Listen for their animal sounds during the piece.

HAVE FUN WITH THE MUSIC Now that you've heard instruments sound like animals, see if you can guess the animal sounds in this video by Mr. Teach! Try copying the sounds after you hear them. If you have instruments at home, try making the animal sounds on an instrument.

CASTLE HOUSE RAG JAMES REESE EUROPE

IN THE PERFORMANCE James Reese Europe was an important musician and bandleader in New York City in the early 1900s. He formed the Clef Club, and organization that served to promote Black musicians as performers and composers. Due to his immense success, he was commissioned as a lieutenant for one of the most important army bands during WW1, made up of only Black musicians, that toured all over Europe. His Castle House Rag is a ragtime piece, a dance style of music. Play your own percussion instruments along with our musicians.

HUNGARIAN RHAPSODY FRANZ LISZT

IN THE PERFORMANCE Franz Liszt was a virtuosic pianist and composer, who was primarily famous during his lifetime as a pianist. Most of the music he composed was written for the piano, including his Hungarian Rhapsodies. The themes used during his 19 Hungarian Rhapsodies are Romanian and Hungarian folk songs. During this piece, play a fun game of freeze dance along with the orchestra - dance when the music is playing and freeze when it stops.

HAVE FUN WITH THE MUSIC Get outside with some chalk and start to learn the musical alphabet with this chalk piano activity from And Next Comes L. This activity can also be done indoors on a rainy day with any cardboard or paper you have lying around.

ON TOP OF SPAGHETTI

IN THE PERFORMANCE On Top of Spaghetti is set to the traditional American folk song On Top of Old Smokey. Like most folk songs, it's unclear exactly who first composed the song, but the first time it was written down was during the early 1900s. The lyrics for On Top of Spaghetti were set to the melody in 1963 and it reached all the way to #14 on the Billboard Hot 100. We'll be joined by Malcolm Ulbrick from Central City Opera during this silly piece.
