PROGRAM NOTES The final bolded sentence in each section indicates the interactive learning element for each piece during the program.

LA VIRGEN DE LA MACARENA - ANDREA GIUFFREDI During bullfighting exhibitions, matadors would pray to La Virgen de la Macarena, a saint, to provide them safety and victory. This melody was made famous by Mexican trumpet virtuoso Rafael Méndez. The version played today is Giuffredi’s unique jazz take on the tune. Andrea Giuffredi is an extremely well-known Italian jazz trumpeter who continues to play to audiences all around the world. Listen to the shining sounds of the trumpet.

ROMANIAN FOLK DANCES - BÉLA BARTÓK Béla Bartók is one of history’s most famous ethnomusicologists (a researcher of folk music). Bartók went to the most remote parts of Hungary to record traditional folk melodies with an Edison phonograph. Romanian Folk Dances is based on several folk melodies including: Dance with Sticks, Romanian Polka, and On the Spot (a dance where participants stamp their foot in one spot). Jump at different speeds along with the music as it changes tempo.

EL CONDOR PASA – DANIEL ALOMÍA ROBLES

Though the origins of the song El Condor Pasa, The Condor Passes, date back to the age of the Incas, the popular form of the melody we hear today was composed in 1913 by Daniel Alomía Robles. In this piece, the Andean condor stands as a symbol of freedom in a conflict between a Peruvian miner and his European boss. Turn your fingers into rain and pretend you’re in the rainforests of Peru.

MANGOES - TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO FOLK TUNE The first ever recorded Calypso song was the Lovey String Band’s “Magoes Vert” produced in 1912. The song was based on the popular Trinidadian-Creole children’s song known familiarly as “Mangoes”. The nursery rhyme’s singer wants to earn a penny to buy mangoes and dreams of all the different kinds of mangoes she hopes will be saved for her at the mango stand. Dance and groove to this island tune.

AH SI MON MOINE VOULAIT DANSER - CANADIAN FOLK SONG The title translates to “If only my monk would dance [with me]!” This lively song is one of French-speaking Canada’s most well known tunes. In this song, a girl repeatedly asks a monk to dance with her, offering to gift him with new articles of clothing in exchange. It is implied that the monk refuses to dance. Spin like a top to this silly piece.

SCOTTISH FANTASY, MOVEMENT 1 - MAX BRUCH Though Max Bruch was German born and raised, he was entranced by Scotland's rolling hills, lush landscapes, and romantic poets. Scottish musical elements can be found in many famous symphonies, but Bruch incorporated full Scottish folk melodies into this piece. The original title of Bruch’s Scottish fantasy is actually “Fantasy for Violin with Orchestra and Harp, with the Free Use of Scottish Folk Melodies.” Pretend to play the violin like a concertmaster.

APPALACHIAN SPRING - AARON COPLAND Aaron Copland is an American composer and known for creating a distinctive American voice in music. To this day, Copland’s endearing and specific compositional style is known to have defined the American spirit in music. Copland incorporated various Shaker hymns into this piece including the now well-known tune, “Simple Gifts”. Watch as dancers from Cleo Parker Robinson Dance join the orchestra.

SEKSTUR/SIX TOUR FROM VENDYSSEL - DANISH STRING QUARTET A “six tour” is a lively Danish dance that closely resembles an Irish jig. This work highlights the “chop” technique; the chop is a percussive effect created by striking and stopping the bow on the string . Dance along with the orchestra.

CALIFORNIA - EL JAVI (LOCAL MUSICIAN) De Colores is a traditional Spanish-language folk song. It is most associated with Mexican folklore and it's believed to have been sung in the Americas since 1600, though some of the melodies likely started in Spain even earlier than that. The lyrics express the bright colors all around us in nature. Use your bodies to show what sound waves look like.

SCUTTLE BUTTIN' - STEVIE RAY VAUGHN, FEATURING LIONEL YOUNG The tune “Scuttle Buttin’” is a guitar showpiece that highlighted Stevie Ray Vaughn’s lightning fast speed guitar chops and signature style. The tune is built around a standard 12 bar blues progression. Jam along with Lionel Young on the electric guitar.

RUSSIAN SAILOR’S DANCE – REINHOLD GLIÈRE Russian Sailors’ Dance is the best-known excerpt from the 1927 ballet, The Red Poppy. The piece is based on the popular Russian folk tune titled Yablochka, which means little apple. This arrangement has a series of variations on Glière’s theme that pick up speed and intensity. Move your body to the tempo of the music, from slow to fast.
