PROGRAM NOTES

The final bolded sentence in each section indicates the interactive learning element for each piece during the program. HUAPANGO - JOSÉ PABLO MONCAYO

Moncayo was a percussionist and conductor who only wrote a small number of compositions. Huapango is his most famous composition. A huapango is a type of Mexican dance and Moncayo used three different traditional dances in his composition and to inspire his own original melodies in the piece. Listen to all the sounds the orchestra can make.

SERENADE FOR STRINGS - PYOTR ILYICH TCHAIKOVSKY

Tchaikovsky was a Russian Romantic composer who wrote many famous symphonies, concerti, and ballets. This piece was inspired by Mozart, his idol. The second movement is a waltz, which means it has three beats per measure. Listen to the string family.

EGMONT OVERTURE - LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN

Beethoven was asked to write incidental music for a German play called Egmont. Incidental music is any music that's used in the background of a movie or play to support the plot. Egmont Overture is the first piece of music and sets the scene for the dramatic play to come. Listen to the woodwind and brass families. Vibrate your body when the music is playing and freeze when it's not.

NOLA - FELIX ARNDT

Arndt was an American pianist and composer who wrote popular music in the early 1900s. He wrote Nola for his wife as an engagement gift. It is his most famous piece and the first piece considered part of the "novelty piano" genre of music - simple piano music that was often put onto piano rolls that were played in bars and restaurants. Listen to the xylophone from the percussion family.

IF YOU'RE HAPPY AND YOU KNOW IT

This is a popular children's song and its origins are unknown though it has been widely recorded and performed since about 1960. Sing along with the orchestra.

FLUTE CONCERTINO - CÉCILE CHAMINADE

Chaminade was a French composer, the first woman composer to be awarded the Légion d'Honneur. She is best-known for this flute concerto. It was commissioned by the Paris Conservatoire for students to learn as a graduation piece and has remained one of the most important flute concertos. Listen to the difference between high and low sounds.

DE COLORES

De Colores is a traditional Spanish-language folk song. It is most associated with Mexican folklore and it's believed to have been sung in the Americas since 1600, though some of the melodies likely started in Spain even earlier than that. The lyrics express the bright colors all around us in nature. Use your bodies to show what sound waves look like.

THE ROARER MARCH - HORACE WESTON

Horace Weston is known as one of the best banjo players of all time. He was born in Connecticut in 1825, which meant that he was born free during a time when African Americans were still enslaved around much of the country. He travelled around the world playing banjo. He composed only a few pieces of music which are not commonly performed. In fact, this might be the first time The Roarer March has been arranged and performed by an orchestra since his death. Use your bodies to show the different dynamics in the music.

IT DON'T MEAN A THING - DUKE ELLINGTON

Composed by Duke Ellington, this piece is now accepted as a legendary jazz standard. Ellington and his jazz orchestra performed it regularly during intermissions in Chicago and recorded it many times. Listen to instruments around the orchestra use mutes to change their sounds.

WILLIAM TELL OVERTURE - GIOACHINO ROSSINI

The Overture to the opera William Tell is often the backdrop for movie scenes, TV shows, and commercials that include portrayals of the American West, though Rossini's opera William Tell is not about that at all. You won't believe your eyes and ears as we use DIY instruments and toys to perform the Finale section of this piece.
