Summer 2016

Welcome to the first ever Summer Tiny Tots! The mission of Inside the Orchestra is to bring orchestra music to young children in the greater Denver metropolitan community, cultivating music appreciation and enhancing their education through an engaging first-hand experience with the orchestra.

About us

We firmly believe that exposing children to the arts at a young age strengthens not only that child but the community as well. Since for many, our concerts are their first exposure to orchestra music, we understand the importance of making it a positive and educational experience. In an effort to be inclusive of all children, Inside the Orchestra underwrites these concerts, thus providing an experience that is otherwise unavailable to many communities.

Our Programs

All of our programs get audiences literally inside the orchestra as they are seated on the floor and surrounded by our professional musicians. All programs include both classical and pop favorites and frequently feature opera singers, modern dancers, and a young student soloist. Tiny Tots Geared towards children ages 6 and under and their families and schools,Tiny Tots seats the audience inside of a 30+ piece orchestra. Programs are held in locations all around the Denver metro area, including Denver, Parker, Boulder, Lakewood, and Commerce City.

Inside the Orchestra for Schools A 14+ piece orchestra program for k-8 schools. Both the repertoire and approach to learning th Inside the Orchestra maintains are designed to support and enhance the school curricula. Schools also receive in-depth instruction sessions with our conductor. Family Concerts Family concerts are free for children of all ages and their families. They occur in venues around Denver, primarily throughout the summer months. Partnerships with Alzheimer's Association and The Autism Society Inside the Orchestra will be offering multi-generational programs for children with sensory processing disorders and adults with dementia.

Program Notes

Just A Closer Walk With Thee Just A Closer Walk is a traditional gospel song. Like many gospel songs, its original author is unknown, but it is believed to have been sung since as far back as the Civil War. Keep your eyes open for the strolling brass players! Waltz of the Flowers from The Nutcracker Op. 71 - Piotr Illyich Tchaikovsky One of the most famous ballets today, The Nutcracker tells the story of Clara, a young German girl, who dreams of fantastical stories after falling asleep on Christmas. Waltz of the Flowers is a movement from the second act of the ballet. In this scene, Clara dreams of beautiful flowers dancing a waltz. Caprice no. 24 for Solo Violin - Niccolo Paganini Caprice no. 24 is a particularly challenging piece for solo violin written by violin virtuoso Niccolo Paganini in the early 1800s. Listen for a variety of advanced techiniques and lots of fast notes! Swan Theme from Swan Lake - Piotr Illyich Tchaikovsky Though well-loved today, audiences didn't like the Swan Lake ballet when it first premiered. Tchaikovsky then decided to take the best parts of the ballet music and turn them into a "suite," a shorter set of musical highlights. Movement one of the suit is the Swan's Theme. This melody should evoke the large, but delicate feathers of a swan as it glides around a lake. Introduction from Also Sprach Zarathustra - Richard Strauss Also Sprach Zarathustra is a tone poem, a piece of music that illustrates or evokes a poem, story, painting, or some other non-music creation. The introduction of Also Sprach Zarathustra, also known as Sunrise, is most famous for its use in Stanley Kubrick's movie Space Odyssey. O Mio Babbino Caro from Gianni Schicchi - Giacchimo Puccini O Mio Babbino Caro is a soprano aria from the opera Gianni Schicchi. The title translates as "Oh My Beloved Father." Lauretta sings to her father about how much she is in love with her suitor Rinuccio, after tensions reach a breaking point between him and Rinuccio's family. A soprano from Central City Opera will join us in the performance of this piece. Elephant from Carnival of the Animals - Camille Saint-Saens Carnival of the Animals is a 14 movement piece that portrays a number of animals. Listen as the bass players imitate one of the biggest animals of them all: the elephant!

Continued Second Hungarian Rhapsody - Franz Liszt Hungarian Rhapsody no. 2 is from a set of 19 rhapsodies. It is inspired by the Hungarian national dance, the Czardas. It was originally written for piano, but then rewritten for orchestra because it was so popular. In the Hall of the Mountain King from the Peer Gynt Suite - Edvard Grieg In the Hall of the Mountain King was part of the original Peer Gynt play and was then extracted to be a part of the Peer Gynt Suite. The mountain king is a nasty troll who sings with this music when the main characters enters his lair. Nimrod from the Enigma Variations - Edward Elgar Each movement of the Enigma Variations is dedicated to one of Elgar's friends. Nimrod was named after Elgar's close friend, Augustus Jaeger, who worked as a music publisher and helped him through some of the most difficult times of his life. Elgar said that Jaeger was one of his greatest influences. Morning Mood from the Peer Gynt Suite - Edvard Grieg Morning Mood also originated in the Peer Gynt play and was taken to be used in the suite, This piece is meant to depict the rising sun. It can be heard regularly throughout pop culture, most notably in Bugs Bunny cartoons. Overture to Poet and Peasant - Franz von Suppé Poet and Peasant is one of von Suppé's earliest operettas. An operetta is a short and often humorous opera. Much of von Suppé's work has been forgotten, but his overtures are still regularly played and have been used many times in cartoons like Bugs Bunny and Popeye. Let it Go As many parents can attest, you'd have to be living under a rock to not know Let It Go. From Disney's 2013 movie Frozen, it has reached number 5 on Billboard's Top 100 songs and has earned both an Academy Award and a Grammy. Overture to William Tell - Giaochino Rossini Rossini wrote 39 operas throughout his life, and this is the overture to his first opera, William Tell. An overture is a piece of instrumental music that introduces an opera or a play. Thanks to its use in the Lone Ranger TV series in the 1950s, this overture is often associated with cowboys and the wild west.
