Summer 2017

Welcome to Tiny Tots! We encourage movement throughout the program! Feel free to let your little ones get up, dance, and participate in the interactive moments. Please be mindful of musicians and other attendees. Look in the program notes for the interactive elements that are highlighted in blue text. Have any questions, comments, or concerns? Find either a Tiny Tots volunteer in a white t-shirt or an Inside the Orchestra staff member in a red t-shirt and we'll be happy to help!

About Us Inside the Orchestra is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We firmly believe that introducing children to the arts at a young age strengthens not only that child but the community as well. In an effort to be inclusive of all children, we underwrite our concerts, thus providing an experience that is otherwise unavailable to many communities.

Our Main Programs All of our programs get children literally inside the orchestra as they are seated on the floor and surrounded by our professional musicians. Programs include diverse music and feature guest artists from multiple other cultural organizations.

Tiny Tots

Geared towards children ages 6 & under, their families, and schools, Tiny Tots seats the audience inside of a 30+ piece orchestra. Concerts are held in locations all around the Denver metro area, from Parker to Boulder and in between.

Inside the Orchestra for Schools

A 14+ piece orchestra outreach program for k-8 school children. Both the repertoire and approach to learning are designed to support and enhance the school curricula. Schools also receive in-depth follow-up sessions with our conductor.

Additional Programs

Inside the Orchestra offers programs for children with sensory processing disorders and adults with dementia through partnerships with the Autism Society and Alzheimers Association. We also have one exciting, adultsonly event a year, Inside the Orchestra for Adults. Learn more about it on our website or on page 10 of this program.

Program Notes Star Wars: Main Theme - John Williams (1941- ) The Main Theme is an iconic piece of music from the Star Wars score. When it was premiered in 1977, it made it all the way up to no. 10 on the Billboard Top 100 Chart. Sesame Street Theme Song - Joe Raposo (1937-1989) "Can You Tell Me How to Get to Sesame Street?" has been used as the show's theme song since it premiered in 1969 and is the oldest song in the show's history. Sing along with us! Need the lyrics? Turn the page. Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy - Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) In the original ballet, this piece features a solo ballerina. The choreographer wanted this music to sound like "drops of water shooting from a fountain," so Tchaikovsky chose to feature the newly invented celeste which looks like a piano but sounds like bells. This is music that sounds breakable. Hedwig's Theme from Harry Potter - John Williams (1941- ) Though it's called Hedwig's Theme, this piece is more commonly known as the iconic opening theme from Harry Potter. It has been used in the soundtracks of all of the films and is synonymous with Harry Potter. Symphony in C - Georges Bizet (1838-1875) Bizet wrote this symphony when he was only 17 years old as a student at the Paris Conservatoire. It was not premiered until 1935, 60 years after his death, and it was an immediate success. This music sounds like chasing your dog around the neighborhood after it has escaped- kids will pretend to look for the puppy. Nimrod from the Enigma Variations - Edward Elgar (1856-1934) Each movement of the Enigma Variations is dedicated to one of Elgar's friends. Nimrod was written Augustus Jaeger, who was a music publisher that helped Elgar through some of the most difficult times of his life. Torreador from Carmen - Georges Bizet (1838-1875) The Toreador Song is a popular aria from the opera Carmen. In this aria, a bullfighter named Escamillo describes the various feats he has accomplished in the bullring and sings about all the fame and fortune that come with it. This piece will feature a performer from Central City Opera. La Virgen de la Macarena - Traditional This piece is a traditional Spanish song that was originally composed as church music. Its popularity increased after it was made famous by the Mexican virtuoso Raphael Mendez. Get ready for the trumpet here!

Sonata in E Major - Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757) Scarlatti spent much of his life as the court composer for the Portuguese and Spanish royal families. He wrote 555 keyboard sonatas during his lifetime. This one was scored for orchestra centuries after his death. Kids will learn that a choreographer is like a puppeteer. Also Sprach Zarathustra - Richard Strauss (1864-1929) The opening fanfare from Also Sprach Zarathustra, titled "Sunrise," is also an example of a tone poem. Also Sprach has been used in tv and movies, and is most famously known in pop culture for its use in Space Odyssey. Have your kids stand up and grow with the music by kneeling on the ground and standing up as the music gets louder. Cinderella Waltz - Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) The Cinderella Suite that this waltz comes from is based on the music from Prokofiev's ballet Cinderella, written in the early 1940s. This ballet was so popular that Prokofiev arranged three suites for orchestra and three for piano based off of its music. Kids can swing like a swing to this music. Dance of the Knights from Romeo and Juliet - Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) Dance of the Knights was written in 1935 as part of the Romeo and Juliet ballet. It is also known as "Montagues and Capulets," and depicts the struggles of the two famous warring families. Kids can stomp like giants with the music- adults, stay seated to allow clear sight-lines for the children. Can-Can from Orpheus in the Underworld - Jacques Offenbach (1819-80) Orpheus in the Underworld is a satirical/comic opera based on the Greek story of Orpheus and Eurydice. The Infernal Gallop, known as the CanCan is a famous excerpt of music from this opera and has been used across throughout other music and pop culture. Kids will be encouraged to raise their hands into the air or lay on their backs and kick-up into the air. I Wanna Be Like You - Sherman Brothers I Want to Be Like You is one of the Jungle Book's, and Disney's, most iconic songs. When writing the piece, the Sherman Brothers said they were aiming for a jazz sound with a Dixieland style melody. Have your kid(s) get up and dance! William Tell Overture - Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868) Rossini wrote 39 operas throughout his life, and this is the overture to his first opera, William Tell. An overture is a piece of instrumental music that introduces an opera or a play. Thanks to its use in the Lone Ranger TV series in the 1950s, this overture is often associated with cowboys and the wild west. Kids can pretend to ride their horses off into the sunset.
