Winter 2016
Welcome to our 30th season! The mission of Inside the Orchestra is to bring orchestra music to young children in the greater Denver metropolitan community, cultivating music appreciation and enhancing their education through an engaging first-hand experience with the orchestra.
About us We firmly believe that exposing children to the arts at a young age strengthens not only that child but the community as well. Since for many, our concerts are their first exposure to orchestra music, we understand the importance of making it a positive and educational experience. Our unique format of surrounding the kids with musicians goes a long way to achieving these goals. We hire professional musicians who have expertise in their instruments as well as an ability to interact with our young audiences. In an effort to be inclusive of all children, ISO underwrites these concerts, thus providing an experience that is otherwise unavailable in many communities.
Our Programs All of our programs get audiences literally inside the orchestra as they are seated on the floor and surrounded by our professional musicians. All performances include both classical and pop favorites and feature opera singers from Central City Opera, modern dancers from Hannah Kahn Dance Company or Kim Robards Dance, and a young student soloist. Tiny Tots Geared towards children ages 6 and under and their families,Tiny Tots seats the audience inside of a 30+ piece orchestra. Concerts are held in locations all around the Denver metro area, including Denver, Parker, Boulder, Lakewood, and Commerce City. Inside the Orchestra for Schools A 14+ piece orchestra assembly for k-8 schools. Both the repertoire and approach to learning that Inside the Orchestra maintains are designed to support and enhance the school curricula. Schools also receive indepth instruction sessions with our conductor.

Program Notes Four Scottish Dances Op. 59- Malcolm Arnold Four Scottish Dances is a piece composed of four movements of "light music" inspired by Scottish country folk tunes. This first movement embodies a slow Scottish dance called a "strathspey" because it originates from the river valley (or strath) of the Spey River.
Waltz of the Flowers from The Nutcracker Op. 71 - Piotr Illyich Tchaikovsky The Nutcracker is a two act ballet that was premiered in St.Petersburg, Russia in 1892. One of the most famous ballets today, it tells the story of Clara, a young German girl, who dreams of fantastical stories on Christmas. Waltz of the Flowers is a movement from the second act of the ballet. In this scene, Clara dreams of beautiful flowers dancing a waltz.
O Mio Babbino Caro from Gianni Schicchi - Giacchimo Puccini O Mio Babbino Caro is a soprano aria from the opera Gianni Schicchi. The title translates as "Oh My Beloved Father." Lauretta sings to her father about how much she is in love with her suitor Rinuccio, after tensions reach a breaking point between him and Rinuccio's family. A soprano from Central City Opera will join us in the performance of this piece.
The Stars and Stripes Forever - John Phillip Sousa John Phillip Sousa is known as the march king, having written 137 marches. Stars and Stripes Forever is one of America’s most iconic marches, and in a congressional action, it was voted as the National March of the United States in 1987. This piece is in standard military march format, starting with a four bar introduction, followed by a dotted, playful melody. This section then leads intro the trio, an iconic piccolo melody that you’re sure to recognize, which is then finished off by a grandioso section.
Continued Swan Theme from the Swan Lake Suite - Piotr Illyich Tchaikovsky Though well-loved today, the Swan Lake ballet was a failure with audiences when it first premiered. Tchaikovsky, disapointed with this, decided to take the best parts of the ballet music and turn them into a "suite," a shorter set of highlights to be performed without dancers. In movement one of this suite, audiences hear the Swan's Theme. This melody, should evoke the large, but delicate feathers of a swan as it glides around a lake. Dancers from Kim Robards Dance will join our orchestra for this piece. Ballet of Unhatched Chicks in their Shells from Pictures at an Exhibition Composed by Modest Mussorgsky, Arranged by Maurice Ravel Pictures at an Exhibition, originally written for piano by Modest Mussorgksy but later orchestrated for full orchestra by Maurice Ravel, is a 16 movement piece based on the paintings of Viktor Hartman. Each movement is very short and is based entirely on one of Hartmans Paintings. During the Ballet of Unhatched Chicks, listeners hear tiny little chicks as they frantically try to break out of their shells. Barber of Seville Overture - Gioachino Rossini The Barber of Seville is a famous comic opera about an overzealous barber named Figaro who weasels himself into a complicated, yet hilarious, love triangle. It is known as one of the best comic operas of all time. Although an overture is intended to be played for the audience just before the opera starts in order to introduce them to the music, the Barber of Seville Overture doesn’t actually contain any of the music present in the opera. It instead contains music from two earlier Rossini operas. Music from Star Wars - John Williams Welcome to the movies! This Star Wars medley will take you from the Main Title music, to Princess Leia's theme, and through the Imperial March. Both Princess Leia’s Theme and the Imperial March are examples of a leitmotif. A leitmotif is a recurring melody that is associated with certain characters or themes in a story.
