to the 2024 edition of Inside Track Motorsport News’ Canadian Racing Guide (CRG) schedule issue. At its core, the piece is a handy ‘chasing racing’ planning guide that has just under 200 track and series schedules in one handy place.
Starting with the Canadian series, it then transitions to tracks in the different regions of the country. The CRG also includes karting schedules, as well as the major international series that are of interest to many Canadian racing fans.
Existing as a digital magazine, all of the ads are ‘hotlinked’ to the advertisers’ websites, making it easy for you to get even more information about a track, series or event, with just one click.
And more than just schedules, the CRG has several features and profiles that will be replaced throughout the season, giving readers and fans even more reasons to refer back to the flipbook on a regular basis. We expect all of the contributors from the printed pages of Inside Track Motorsport News to file pieces in the CRG.
For tracks that have supported the Canadian Racing Guide with ads, we’ve included – in large, black, bold letters – the words “SEE OUR AD ON PAGE…” in the heart of their schedules. Please check out these ads as they usually include more detailed information about the series’ or facilities’ big events, and weekly show highlights.
Thank you to all of the track promoters and owners who are participating in the CRG with ads. They truly make this issue possible. To show our support for them, we’re attempting to share their social media posts to our feeds, where possible. We ask you to consider their facilities and series when making your plans.
Where possible, we’ve included multi-day listings in the schedues. But if something is listed as a single day event and you suspect it might be more than one day, please go to the website under the track or series name, and confirm.
Confirming is also a good thing given that things change. So if you are planning to attend a race, please call the track or series and check their website first, before heading out.
As this issue goes to press, we encourage all the Canadian race car drivers, series and tracks to add editor@insidetracknews.com to your press release list. We regularly feature press releases on our website (InsideTrackNews.com) and consider them for publication in the printed magazine. LOOKING BACK JOHN MASSINGBERD
Almost40 years ago, I had a chance encounter with a guy at Cayuga Speedway during an ASA race… and we started a conversation. I soon learned that this man, named John Massingberd, was in the process of creating a TV show along with his partner Bruce Mehlenbacher.
I had known Bruce for many years as I had worked tech at his father’s track, Cayuga Dragway, back in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. The pair also formed Promark Motorsports International, along with Pro Trax Television and Dirt Trax Television.
All four companies were feeding a market that really needed and enjoyed the coverage. They reported on drag racing, stock car racing, sports cars, motorcycles, tractor pulls and snowmobiles.
John became the easily recognized cohost of the shows, and based on their TV success, they ventured out and expanded
into radio, launching Raceline Radio in 1993. Interestingly, it’s normally the reverse that happens; radio first, and if that goes well, the move to TV. Raceline Radio was a ‘must hear’ event for racers and fans all across the country.
BIG BIRD
‘Big Bird,’ as I called John, developed into one of the most knowledgeable and entertaining motorsports commentators in the country. His calm, laidback approach put all his guests at ease. He was also very proficient at getting that ‘inside scoop’ ahead of the print media of the day.
His insight and knowledge of the sport was legendary, and the news he dug up was often quoted and referenced by other media outlets. The term ‘laidback’ also applied to his physique! His shoulders were pulled back, and he carried himself very prominently.
John’s on-screen demeanor helped expand Snow Trax TV into the lucrative U.S. market. I still can’t believe that one of the American sports channels didn’t pick him up for their many racing broadcasts.
Along the way, John and Bruce connected with sports announcer Erik Tomas. Erik was highly recognizable in the Toronto market as the sports and news guy at FM 99.9 and AM 680. Erik had also done commentary for the Toronto Maple Leafs on Global Television and CHCH Hamilton.
The good news there, you ask? ET, as he’s known as, didn’t have to worry about the Leafs playoffs interfering with the racing season. I just had to say that!! I’ll let myself out!! Erik also did track announcing for the CART (IndyCar) races at the CNE, back in the ‘80s.
On Raceline Radio, Erik and John were able to interview some of the top names in the racing business. World class racers including Mario Andretti, Shirley Muldowney, John Force, Don Garlits, Rick Mears, Bobby Rahal, Tom Carnegie, Nigel Mansell, Al Unser Jr., Dale Earnhardt and Kenny Bernstein appeared on their show.
They also had top local racers share their stories. The three of them were easily recognized and were welcomed at racing venues all across the country.
At its peak, Raceline aired on stations in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary, Halifax, Hamilton, Niagara/Western New York State and in other markets. It’s scary to think just how wide their reach would have been if the internet was as active back then as it is today. The Raceline Radio era came to an end just last year when ET officially retired. It was a great 31-year run!
To give you an idea just how much respect these three racing experts have in the motorsport world, all are inducted members to the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame.
The Mehlenbacher Family was inducted in 1997. Erik Tomas became a member in 2018, and John was posthumously inducted as part of the Class of 2023. Massingberd and The Mehlenbacher Family were also inducted into the Canadian Drag Racing Hall of Fame, in 2023 and 2022, respectively.
Bruce Mehlenbacher’s Pro Mod Racing
Association (PMRA) has created The John Massingberd Memorial Award. Fittingly, this year’s honoree was none other than Erik Tomas. The award was presented during the Drag Strip Memories Show at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum located in the Hamilton International Airport last April.
Previous winners of the prestigious award include Carl Spiering, Fred and Betsy Smith, R.W. (Bob) Slack, Vern Christy, John Waldie, Tim Miller, Bruce Biegler, Harvey Silverthorn and Rob Potter.
Tragically, John died from ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) in 2008 at the young age of 54. His loss was felt by many people on both sides of the border.

other ‘Big Bird’ to match John. Speaking of ALS, researchers at Western University in London, Ontario recently announced a significant breakthrough that will hopefully lead to a potential cure for this dreaded disease.
Exciting news, but sadly, too late for John and many others.
‘Big Bird’ left a BIG impression on the racing community, and he is definitely missed by all of us. A really good guy, gone way too soon. IT

Q&A WITH MARIO ANDRETTI
Legendary racer talks about his family’s prospects for joining Formula One

Inside Track Motorsport News’s Jeff Pappone recently caught up with legendary racer Mario Andretti to talk about the progress – or the lack thereof – regarding efforts to get the Andretti name onto the Formula One grid.
Led by Michael Andretti’s formidable motorsports operations under the Andretti Global brand, the outfit applied to the sport’s governing Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile’s process to bring two new teams into F1 in 2026.
Although Andretti’s application passed muster with the FIA, F1’s owner, Liberty Media Corporation, rejected Andretti Global’s bid despite family’s Grand Prix history and the backing of General Motors by way of the Cadillac brand as an engine partner.
Formula One Management went as far as to say that the Andretti name would not bring value to the sport; nevertheless, Andretti Global continues to work to find a way onto the F1 grid.
Meanwhile, Andretti Global continues to work on expanding its reach in motorsport,
with Mario Andretti confirming that the outfit plans to be on the grid at Le Mans in 2025.
Question: F1, what’s the deal with that?
Mario Andretti: Well, Jeff, I wish I knew in that sense, because they’re keeping us in limbo. And that’s the biggest issue here. We’ve met and checked every box put in front of us and more. But we’ll keep trying –that’s what we do – it’s still open, it’s not a closed case. In fact, we were even told that by Liberty in one of the meetings and, and so, it’s ‘tell us what to do exactly,’ and we’ll go from there.
Q: And you have the Andretti name and Cadillac, and I don’t understand the opposition to it.
M.A.: I spoke to team principals and quite a few who spoke to me didn’t say that they’re against it. They put themselves in our position and you would be surprised the ones who actually have told me, personally, ‘we’re not against by any means.’ How could it be? I mean, down the road for God’s sakes, I think we bring in something substantial to the party here. An American team with all of the increased interest in North
America here. So, everybody benefits from this. If we feed that positive energy that’s there, I think it’s probably even good business, quite honestly. So, this is our life and it’s all we do, and we’ll just keep on going.
Q: I see Formula One rising in popularity in the United States, but I’m not sure it’s sustainable as it is now. There’s a strong argument to be made that F1 needs something to hook onto keep it sustainable… and the Andretti name and Cadillac are those things.
M.A.: Here’s the way I look at it: I know what I experienced in F1 and there is a national pride that you carry with you. We take a lot of things for granted, like for instance, we’re in our own country and the national anthem is played.
Of course, there’s respect in that, but it’s different when you’re on a top step in any country in the world outside the U. S. and your own national anthem is played on an international stage. I’ve said it over and over: I remember thinking ‘oh my goodness,’ whether I was in South Africa, or in Germany, or in Japan, or wherever – I won at least one race on five continents.

hoopla that’s with us now, there’s a lot of national pride, and of course, why wouldn’t Americans root for American team? And… we would try extra hard – if there’s anything left – to make us all proud. I mean that’s the whole idea, of course.
I think even from a business standpoint, that’s got to play and the teams that I’m talking to see that. But there’s something – an underlying current there that I don’t understand. But, again, we keep the faith, that’s all I can say.
Q: Canadians understand that pride idea completely because Gilles Villeneuve [and for some younger fans, Jacques Villeneuve] is the reason many became F1 fans, having a Canadian winning at that level.
M.A.: Absolutely. That becomes your national hero representing Canada on a world stage. I say F1 is the Olympics of motorsports and truly, truly international, even though IndyCar has more international drivers. It’s still ‘American’ if you will… but still F1 races all over the world.
And, by the way, we haven’t stopped working, either. Everything has been going on ‘flat out’ on both sides of the ocean to prepare and be ready. It’s not like they’d say one day that ‘you’re officially all set’ and we’d start over. No, no, no, no, we’ve kept going. We have much faith in the system that hopefully reason, proper reason will prevail, ultimately.
Q: I guess the other thing here is that
Michael, with Andretti Global that he’s built and the number of racing series he’s in, the businesses behind it, and the sponsors and the relationships he has, I mean, this should be golden.
M.A.: Wait until you hear Michael’s official gross overall when it becomes official, you won’t believe it. I am proud because he’s touching every box in the sport at the top levels – I can just leak to you that he’ll be at [the 24 Hours of ] Le Mans next year with a team.

I mean, but he’s everywhere and his ambition is to be at the top level in motorsports everywhere. Is something wrong with that? I don’t think so. I’m so, so proud because gives me life in the sport.
I want a home whenever I go to an F1 race. I’m currently invited, and people and teams are very, very kind. But I feel like it’s not my home. I feel like I’m in the way –maybe I’m taking over a seat that a sponsor should be having at their hospitality or some-
thing – and I want a home.
My whole life, anywhere I’ve gone, I’ve had a home at the track and at races because I had a team. And that’s what Michael provides for me when I go to any race where Michael is involved, I have a home. And now, I want a home in Formula One.
I think I’ve paid my dues in our sport to have earned that. And we don’t need any favours, we’ll earn it all the way.
Q: I think a lot of people would dispute that and say that you have a home in F1 whenever you want.
M.A.: Oh no, there’s no question, but I want my own home.
Q: And you’re not still driving the two-seater at IndyCar races?
M.A.: No, the reason is because of this. I’m staying clear because I want be where I need to be as part of this. Unless I can do them all, I don’t want to be just an Uber driver now and then, because I want to have my own car and set it up the way I want. That’s the way I’ve always thought about doing it because I don’t have any rules for me and they let me do what I want. I don’t want to just pop in there and then it’s just okay – I want to I want to be number one.

RILEY MERCER: YOUNG RACER, BIG DREAMS
Mercer won first Open Class feature, at Ohsweken Speedway, last season

Asa young boy, Riley Mercer loved to watch Sprint Cars at Ohsweken Speedway and wondered how he could become one of those drivers.
His dad Robert Mercer, an open-wheel race car driver, told Riley that he needed to start with go karts and drive them as hard as he could, as often as he could – hence, the seed was planted.
Riley’s journey started about eight years ago, with a Junior Sprint kart at Ohsweken and Tillsonburg’s Little Middleton Speedway.
This was not Robert’s first rodeo; he knew that Riley needed good equipment, plus extra engines and parts, to have a chance. Riley started in the Junior Division and was a natural; he won many races, including a couple of Dash For Cash victories.
Riley is a smooth and focused driver, who watches the cars in front of him and makes calculated decisions; he learns from other drivers’ moves and finds the holes to make a pass. He also has a calm and relaxed demeaner, always keeping his cool.
After about four years in the Junior Division, Riley met the age requirements to move up to the Box Stock class.
He was quite young in the big boys and girls class but quickly got control of the power; he knew the track, how and where to drive, and found victory lane on many occasions. There was only one position that Riley wanted and that was first.
It was sometimes hairy watching this young racer on the track. The drivers battle inches apart; when they tangle, they go for one heck of a ride.
Riley has had his share of wild rides, but always shakes it off and straps back into his five-point harness in pursuit of the checkered flag.
Last year, Riley experimented in two divisions at two tracks. He ran his Box Stock class, with his usual top-five finishes, in fields that sometimes totaled 20 karts on the track at the same time – talk about action!
He was also starting to practice in the Open Class, with 500cc motorcycle engines and drivers ranging from 14 to 50-years-old, some of them racing full-sized Sprint Cars. The learning curve is virtually 90-degrees – the power has tripled and karts are constantly sideways through the corners, with wheel-to-wheel action; if you haven’t seen it, it’s worth watching this choreographed dance on wet clay.
Last year had its thrills and spills, with Riley learning from each incident. By the end of the season, he won his first feature in the Open Class at Ohsweken.
Looking ahead to this season, Riley and his dad are prepping two
Open Class karts to go racing with; he’s looking forward to the challenges it will bring.
While he knows that the support of his parents is so important, he says that great sponsors are a key component to success.
Riley works with all of his sponsors personally and would like to thank the following companies for their support: Grand River Power Sports in Cainsville has been incredible, with the Kawasaki 450 engines and technical support; The Norbruis Group has been a multi-year sponsor with continuous growing support, insuring a dream; and Anthrafilter Media & Coal of Brantford. There’s also B.C.W. Lumber and Plywood, who have been Riley’s sponsor since the very beginning.

MIATA CANADA CUP OPENER A SUCCESS

inaugural races for CASC-OR’s new Miata Canada Cup took place on June 1-2 at Shannonville Motorsport Park, where two dozen Mazda Miata’s and their drivers arrived at the track for what turned out to be a highly successful debut.
CASC-OR decided to start the new specstyle series for 2024 after the turnouts for Calabogie Motorsports Park’s Miata Challenge series and SCCA events in the U.S. caught their attention. There was a market for a regional Miata series in Canada and it just needed a platform.
The initial response following the Miata Canada Cup announcement was overwhelming, with the club receiving phone calls from across the country and south of the border. While the cars race at speeds similar to the GT5 class in the Pirelli Grand Touring Sprints, their versatility, drivability and cost are all benefits that appeal to drivers with various levels of experience.
CASC-OR Race Director Pat Cyr says that the Mazda Miata is a momentum-driven car that’s all about technique and honing skills, while piloting a vehicle that’s less powerful. He says that, while it’s introductory-level in some aspects, it’s an incredibly fun car to drive for anyone.
“If you’re on a budget to race or an unlimited budget, there are people from all walks of that spectrum who are actually competing in the car because they understand how fun it is,” said Cyr. “You can be
an incredibly experienced person, even with some pro experience, or someone who’s just getting started off...it appeals to every walk.”
Cyr says there was a consensus for what would be considered successful for the car count and that the 24 cars in the paddock almost doubled those hopes for opening weekend. He says there were no complaints related to the Miata Canada Cup and that, on a scale of one to ten, he’d rate it as an 11 for how well everything went.
The field that took the green flag at Shannonville included the likes of Owen Clarke, who races full-time in the FEL Emzone Radical Cup Canada, and CASC-OR President Ted Michalos, who bought a couple of Miata’s before the season. There was also a large contingent of drivers who race in the Calabogie series, including Geoff Johnston, Kevin Conty and Taylor Mahon.
Cyr says that he’s looking forward to watching drivers who’ve never raced at some of the tracks on the schedule. The improvement from race one to race three, at Shannonville, is something that stood out to him.
“From the Saturday afternoon, (the drivers) who have a lot of experience running different tracks, they basically all spread each other out over the 24 entries;
there were pockets of two or three cars, then (standalone cars),” said Cyr. “When it came down to the last race on Sunday, the pockets were considerably tighter; you had four-five-six-seven-eight cars running against each other...the fun part for me is to see the development of the drivers who are going to get better in their skills.”
Martin Langeveldt swept the three races at Shannonville, with Matthew Gidman finishing runner-up each time. Clarke, Johnston and Matt White each recorded top-fives in the opening races.
The series will return to action during the BARC weekend at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (CTMP) on July 27-28; they’ll then compete at Calabogie on August 16-18, before concluding their season on October 5-6 at the Celebration of Motorsport at CTMP. IT

IT’S A FAMILY AFFAIR FOR THE BAKERS
IMSA: Dean And Sam Baker Team Up For Michelin Pilot Challenge Campaign

Canada (SCCC) TCR champion Dean Baker will return to IMSA, where he’ll join forces with his son Sam to run five races in the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge (MPC). The team’s first event will be at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on June 7-9.
The elder Baker won last year’s TCR championship on the strength of four wins, all coming at his home track of Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (CTMP).
The Bowmanville, ON driver opened the season with one podium in two races at CTMP and will now shift efforts south of the border, where there’s a specific motivation behind the move.
“The goal really was just to get in the car with my son,” said Baker. “It’s always been sort of a dream or a hope that someday we’d be able to race together. So, Michelin Pilot gives us that opportunity to get in the car together; share the car, share the pain, share the fun of it, and do it together.”
The team is scheduled to compete in five MPC races; June 7-9 at Mid-Ohio, June 20-23 at Watkins Glen International, July 12-14 at CTMP, August 23-25 at VIRginia International Raceway, and October 9-12 at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta.
Baker says the new campaign will make for a very busy summer. He says there’s a
lot of infrastructure that comes into play with endurance racing, such as driver changes, live pit stops and green flag pit stops. His team also decided to prepare a second car because of the difference in set-up between sprint and endurance racing.
Baker has 35-plus years of racing experience, including a few seasons running LMP3 in the IMSA VP Racing SportsCar Challenge (formerly IMSA Prototype Challenge). While his Baker Racing team will field the MPC ride, they’ll get some help from MLT Motorsports, one of his former teams in LMP3. MLT will assist with some of the race strategies and pit stops.
AVOIDING THE MISTAKES
“They have the personnel and they know the IMSA systems and procedures,” said Baker. “There’s a saying in IMSA that the team that makes the fewest mistakes has the best chance of winning and it’s very true, penalties hurt. So, working with a team that has that experience goes a long way to help us avoid making those mistakes and learning the hard way.”
Baker is looking forward to see how his team stacks up against the competition in a bigger environment. He says they’ve grown and learned a lot, and that he feels more prepared to race in IMSA now than in the past.
Dean is also looking forward to watch Sam grow and see if this can lead him somewhere down the road. Sam works for FEL Motorsports, making it impossible to race together as teammates in the SCCC.
“That’s really the biggest reason for not continuing to run in FEL, otherwise we would be more than happy to run in FEL,” said Dean. “We love the series; it’s great people, great venues, but selfishly, it’s my dream to race with my son, so we have to go to IMSA to do it.”
While Baker won’t defend his TCR championship, he could still run the Labour Day Sprints races at CTMP, depending on how the MPC season goes.
“It’s expensive and you can get yourself spread too thin; burnout people, your crew, everyone gets a little bit tired,” said Baker. “In addition to the five races, we have five test days, which are almost like events on their own…it compounds very quickly when you start putting in the amount of time and effort from everybody. We’ll see, it’s very much a wait and see basis, if we can make it back we certainly will.”
Even if he doesn’t return to FEL this season, he’ll still come by to support the series as much as possible. In the meantime, Dean will now have the opportunity to fulfill a dream, when he races together with Sam for the first time at Mid-Ohio. IT

TORONTO MOTORSPORTS PARK AT 70
Since1954, Toronto Motorsports Park
has been a major venue for drag racing in Ontario. The 2024 season marks the 70th anniversary of the legendary multi-purpose racing facility.
“We’re very proud of our track’s history and its future,” said TMP owner Uli Bieri. “We have so many experiences and great events available for people who love cars and racing. With 2024 being the 70th anniversary of the track, it’s a very special milestone and we’re excited to celebrate it all season long.”
The dragstrip at TMP started as a ‘Sunday only’ operation, in 1954, on an abandoned World War II airstrip. In the early days, the drag racers shared the asphalt runways with airplanes. The track was founded by the Mehlenbacher family. They gave way to John and Sharon Fletcher, who operated the facility for many years.
And for the past 25 seasons, Uli Bieri has been at the ownership helm. The fact that
all of them are inductees to the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame speaks to the importance of the track and its decades of success.
In its 70 years, the track has been known by several names, including Kohler Drag Strip, Kohler Superboss Dragway, Cayuga 1320 Dragway, Dragway Park, and Toronto Motorsports Park. The track has played host to many of the biggest names in drag racing, including ‘Big Daddy’ Don Garlits, Shirley Muldowney (who earned her NHRA Top Fuel license at Dragway Park), Don ‘The Snake’ Prudhomme, Tom ‘The Mongoose’ McEwen, and ‘The First Lady of Motorsports,’ Linda Vaughn, to name a few.
Major changes started to take place after former professional race car driver Uli Bieri purchased the facility in 1998. Recognizing the need for a road racing course in the ‘Golden Horseshoe’ region, Bieri acted upon his lifelong ambition to build a 3-kilometre road course.
Working with the late Roger Peart, of ASN Canada, they designed a track that would appeal to a wide variety of road racing enthusiasts, a course where experts and novices could all enjoy their high-performance vehicles and motorcycles in a safe and affordable environment.
This addition diversified the facility and opened the doors to numerous new possibilities that are still being realized today.
By 2001 several million dollars had been invested to upgrade the drag racing facility to national event standards. This included the track surface and length, concrete guardrails, timing system and lighting. Bieri then constructed an impressive three-storey, air-conditioned luxury VIP/Control Tower which houses a media room, classrooms and private suites.
The facility’s name was changed to Toronto Motorsports Park. Collaborating with the late Bill Bader Sr., the President of the IHRA, plans were set in motion for TMP to host an

IHRA National Event. The inaugural IHRA ACDelco Canadian Nationals took place in 2002 and ran for several years, attracting capacity crowds to TMP.
After that – and after a 10-year absence – the track returned to NHRA sanctioning, once again aligning Canada’s oldest drag racing facility with the world’s largest motorsports sanctioning body.
In 2010 Toronto Motorsports held its first Canadian Nitro Nationals, the largest independently produced motorsports entertainment event in Canada. Still a ‘must attend’ event, the Nitro Nationals takes place every year on the Canada Day long weekend. The incredible event features Nitro Funny Cars, NHRA Top Fuel Dragsters, Jet Trucks, Jet Dragsters, Alcohol Funny Cars, a Wheel Standing Firetruck and more.
The 2024 Nitro Nationals event takes place on June 28, 29 & 30 and will be the most spectacular to date, given that it will be the the centrepice event of the track’s 70th anniversary season.
Over the years, the upgrades and improvements have continued, creating a multi-purpose racing facility that plays host to many races and events throughout the year, including major international drag racing events, weekly race programs, training sessions, test and tunes, open lapping, track rentals, VIP Suites, racing experiences (exotic cars, drag racing and F2000 cars), team building and other corporate and charity events.

YOUNG RACER PROFILE: AUSTIN SEBURN
Second-year driver spent the winter competing in the southeastern US

It’sbeen a busy several months for Wainfleet, ON’s Austin Seburn, a 12-year-old driver who started the year racing against some notable names in the U.S. in just his second season of competition.
Seburn first became interested in racing while playing with Hot Wheels at four-yearsold, before the interest shifted to watching old NASCAR races on YouTube. He also watched his brother race and kept asking to get behind-the-wheel himself.
“I just said to my mom and dad, ‘hey, can I race?’ and they avoided it like it was the black plague,” said Seburn. “They said ‘no’ a lot and, one day, we went to Merrittville (Speedway) and I said ‘Hey, can I race?’ and they thought about it and here I am now.”
Although his brother decided to switch sports, Austin remained motivated to be more successful than his sibling. Nicknamed ‘The Hurricane’ when he was a toddler, since he wouldn’t sit still, the young racer is well travelled early in his career.
Seburn started racing a flat kart at Merrittville and Flamboro speedways last season, winning several races before getting the opportunity to test a bandolero at Florence Motor Speedway last fall.
He returned to race at the South Carolina track a few weeks later and caught the attention of Kyle Beattie, the CEO of Sprint Kart Enterprises (SKE).
Following a test session in North Carolina, SKE signed a deal with Seburn that saw him race winged karts in the US southeast this past winter, while also racing a Legend car at Auburndale and Citrus County speedways, in the lead-up to Daytona Speedweeks.
The amount of events and selection of vehicles is a big difference that draws Seburn towards racing in the US versus Canada; he finds the competition to be a bigger challenge as well, which helps him learn more.
HARD TO WIN IN THE US
“When you go there, you race a lot, you probably won’t win… the competition’s way too difficult because they grow up on it,” said Seburn. “It feels like a whole different racing world. There are more people there who race, and they’re a lot harder (to beat).”
Seburn got the opportunity to race against the kids of NASCAR Cup Series stars, such as Brexton Busch, Keelan Harvick and Brooklyn Newman.
While he admits that it’s hard not to get carried away by those names, he remembers that they’re just kids as well and not to think of them having a different skill level.
Racing in the US has also given Seburn the opportunity to meet current and former Cup Series drivers, such as Kyle Busch, Clint Bowyer and Dale Earnhardt Jr. He got to meet his hero, Jeff Gordon, at a seminar in Amelia Island, FL, where he spent some time
standing with Gordon’s group outside the venue. Seburn told Gordon that he’ll drive for him one day.
Seburn’s first US win came on the Easter weekend, in a Box Stock, at North Carolina’s HorsePower Park.
He says it felt really good to lead the pack for the first time in six months and to do so against drivers who are competitive at Millbridge Speedway, where he raced regularly. Despite the physical nature of the race, he was able to focus on the task at hand.
“First there was a heat and I got bumped around, pushed, and got into the infield, and I got very upset,” said Seburn. “But I had to control myself; by the time the race happened, I controlled myself down enough to just focus on getting the lead and I did that.”
Seburn will race locally this summer at Ohsweken Speedway and Tillsonburg’s Little Middleton Speedway; he’ll also join the Great Lakes Legends Series for a few races and will spend time practicing at Flamboro Speedway. He’s especially looking forward to the Ohsweken Northern Micro Sprint Nationals here in Canada.
In August, Austin will return to the US for a two-week midwest tour, racing in Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin.
His future goal is to race in the NASCAR Truck Series; if he reaches that level, his next goal would be to advance to the NASCAR Cup Series. IT

Event was the highlight of Toronto Motorsport Park’s 70th Anniversary season
CAYUGA, ON – On Sunday, June 30, Toronto Motorsports Park played host to the 2024 edition of its annual Canadian Nitro Nationals. The Canada Day Weekend spectacular is a ‘must see’ event for drag racing fans in the region.
Despite some weather challenges, this year’s Nitro Nationals didn’t disappoint. One of the highlights was the evening run between the two Paton Racing Nitro Funny cars, featuring Jeff Chatterson and Todd Paton. In the Sunday evening head-to-head between the two, Chatterson went 304 mph and clipped the wall near the top end. Fortunately, there was little damage to his car.
Additionally, there was a full schedule of other classes and vehicles, including Neale Armstrong’s jet car, Pro Mods, Junior Dragsters, vintage drag cars and more.

INDY 500 PACE CARS OVER THE YEARS
The obvious, the weird and the ‘hard to believe’ for more than a century at The Brickyard

Thisyear’s race on the US May long weekend marked the 108th running of the Indianapolis 500, an event that is very steeped in tradition. Aside from the marching bands, the brick track surface, and the drinking of milk by the race’s winners, the cars that have ceremoniously paced the 33 starters, and their drivers, are also a big part of the Indy tradition.
While cars from General Motors have been used for more than the last 20 years, it was not always so. And from the first 500 in 1911, cars in this elite and exclusive group have been varied… and not always predictable. Usually, the winning bidder, each year, presented its most powerful car for the job. But there have been exceptions, and
some are real head-scratchers.
How about a Chevrolet in 1948? Or a Nash Ambassador for 1948? Both were six-cylinder cars with top speeds of 75, maybe 80 mph. The race cars were good for 120-125 mph then.
In the automotive dark ages of the 1980s, a Pontiac Fiero paced the field in 1984, and a Chrysler LeBaron was enlisted for the job in 1987.
Along the way, there have even been some pace vehicles that were not even cars, such as the Oldsmobile Bravada (in 2001) and a Chevy SSR (in 2003). The former was an SUV, and the latter a small pick-up.
But by and large, Indy’s pace cars have been the most powerful and performance-oriented cars of the day. These have
included Stutz, Duesenbergs, Packards, a V-12 Cadillac and Lincolns, in the early years.
Later, the task went to cars like the Chrysler 300, Ford Mustangs, a turbocharged Buick Century, and a Pontiac Trans-Am. Since 2004, a Chevy Camaro or Corvette has been the pace car for the Indy 500.

Duesenberg in 1923, and Louis Chevrolet in 1926, although he drove a Chrysler. George Mason, the president of Nash, drove one of his Ambassadors in 1947 before the company merged with Hudson to become American Motors.

CHARLES CHAYNE: A BIG BUICK

Looking back at all the vehicles that have paced the Indy 500, few were larger than the Buick Series 80 four-door convertible that paced the 1939 edition of the Greatest Spectacle in Racing.
The car was powered by a 320-cubic inch, 141-horsepower, straight eight (cylinder) motor. At the time, it was the largest engine in the Buick lineup. And every bit of that power was needed to push the 4930-pound car around the track.
Charles Chayne was the driver of this pace car. While not a household name, Chayne was head of the division’s engineering team from 1936 until 1951 and was responsible for some of Buick’s innovations at the time, including the steering wheel horn ring, power seats, and tinted glass. Chayne was also a devoted car collector and restorer. Some of his projects included the restoration of a 1912 Simplex, early Buicks, and a Hispano-Suiza.
He also purchased one of the seven Bugatti Royales, a two-door open car which he found in a New York salvage yard, in
1943, with a blown engine. A huge car with a 12-liter engine, he paid $75 for the $43,000 ‘when-new’ car.
He spent a few years returning the car to the road and then donated the Royale, one of the world’s greatest classics, to the Henry Ford Museum in 1958. Auction prices of other Royales in recent years have been in the double-digit millions.

Continental in 1946. William Clay Ford, also a son of Edsel, drove a Ford in 1953 and a Torino in 1968 while owner of the Detroit Lions NFL team. But his brother Benson Ford paced the Indy three times, in 1950 with a Mercury, 1964 with a Mustang, and 1966 with Mercury Comet Cyclone.
Carl Fisher, the entrepreneur who conceived and developed the Lincoln Highway, raised the financing and headed up the building of the Speedway in 1909 but didn’t have the big race until two years later. He also drove a Stoddard-Dayton, a Stutz, and a Packard to pace the 1911 through 1915 Indy 500 races.
The majority of Indy pace cars were driven by former IndyCar racers, starting with Barney Oldfield in 1920.
F1 RACERS HAVE PACED THE 500
Also, Brickyard vets like Wilbur Shaw, Sam Hanks, and Jim Rathman paced the 500. Formula One drivers such as Jackie Stewart drove a Mustang in 1979, and Emerson Fittipaldi drove a Corvette in 2008.
There have also been several personalities from the world of entertainment who have driven the pace car, in recent decades. Some of these are logical, like actor James Garner, who did some actual racing. He paced the 1975 (Buick), 1977 (Oldsmobile), and 1985 (Oldsmobile) 500s. Jay Leno is not a racer, but he knows his way around cars, and drove a Monte Carlo in 1999.
Disgraced Tour de France bicycle racer Lance Armstong (a Corvette in 2006), model Ellen Irwin Mellencamp (an Oldsmobile Bravada in 2001), restaurateur and television personality Guy Fieri (a Corvette in 2001) and TV newscaster Robin Roberts (a Camaro in 2010) have also led the field at Indy.
Fortunately – some would say – sanity has returned to the driver’s seat of the Indy 500 pace car. In the interests of safety and race cohesion, the pace lap driver has not driven the pace car during caution periods of the race.
In the last few years, that honour has gone to former drivers Don Bailey, Duke Nalon and Johnny Rutherford. For the past seven years, Sarah Fisher has driven the pace car, both at the start of the race and during caution periods. Fisher, who has driven karts, Sprint Cars, and Midgets –and who was an IndyCar driver for several seasons, including nine 500s – was at the wheel of the Corvette ZO6 in 2023. IT
