COVER STORY The cover features one of the most recognizable buildings in the world, the Roman Colosseum or Coliseum. It was built between 72 AD and 80 AD during the reign of two emperors of the Flavian dynasty, Vespasian and his son Titus. Therefore, it was referred to as the Flavian Amphitheatre. It is 48 m (157 ft) high, covers an area of 2 ha (5 ac) and provided room for 55.000 spectators. The name Colosseum is believed to derive from a colossal statue of the emperor Nero which was the only feature that survived the demolition of Nero’s palace Domus Aurea. The statue remained standing well into the medieval era and became the iconic symbol of the permanence of Rome. In 2007, the Colosseum was chosen as one of the new seven wonders of the world. If you want to take an inexpensive and authentic souvenir of the Colosseum back home just go through your pocket change and look for the Italian version of the five-cent Euro coin.

EDITOR’S LETTER Dear TRAVELER Shopping in Rome is exciting throughout the year but it is specially rewarding once the summer sales start. Who doesn’t love a little "caccia al tesoro", a scavenger hunt for the most unique pieces at unbeatable prices? The city centre is a paradise for passionate shoppers and offers high-end fashion as well as low cost international brands. But remember, you are in Rome! Wouldn’t you rather buy something that you cannot find anywhere else? A unique souvenir in the best sense of the word that captures the spirit of the city and its history and embodies the Italian art of living and joy for beauty and style at the same time. How about some shoes handmade to cater to your personal taste? A handbag that was made by young Italian designers? A unique piece of jewellery that one of the many artisanal goldsmiths in Rome crafted in their atelier? The possibilities are endless, for Rome is a vibrant city where traditional craftsmanship, innovative techniques and new design ideas go hand in hand. Last but not least, we want to let you in on a well-kept little secret. The most interesting shops are not to be found in the major streets of Rome that are overcrowded with backpackers trotting from one sight to the next but in the hidden alleys that are much quieter and romantic and will awe you with hidden architectural gems. If you want to experience Rome to the fullest take those little streets and make the city your own. We wish you fun and happy shopping! Sincerely, Insight Design Guide

ROME: THROUGH THE ARTISTS' EYES IN THIS ISSUE OF IDG WE PROUDLY PRESENT FEDERICO MONDELLO OF MONDELLIANI EYEWEAR WHO GOES THROUGH GREAT LENGHTS TO create TRULY UNIQUE FRAMES. ALSO, KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR ELENA SAGRESTI AND HER ART GALLERY ROMA WITH A ONE OF A KIND CURATED COLlECTION.
FEDERICO MONDELLO MONDELLIANI
designing and manufacturing its own collections and became the go-to address for luxury eyewear. When I joined the business 10 years ago and added my vision (pun intended) to the enterprise, Mondelliani was born. What is the creative concept behind your brand? In short, it’s the strong synthesis of vibrant yet harmonic colors, elegance and quality.
Mondelliani stands for style and quality, tradition and innovation, bound together by an innate sensibility for color. They offer artisanal hand-made eyewear as well as a fresh line of more affordable quality glasses combined with world-class quality, being in partnership with Zeiss, a global leader in the production of spectacle lenses and optical products. Federico, you were born into a family with passion for unique eyewear and an exclusive sense of style and quality. How did the Mondello family business evolve into the Mondelliani brand? Everything began some 50 years ago in Via del Pellegrino, where my grandfather and father had an optician store. My mother and father travelled to France and the USA to find the most exclusive brands and soon the family name became a synonym for stylish, high-quality eyewear that attracted famous actors, writers and artists. My family started

ELENA SAGRESTI, ART GALLERY ROMA International artist Elena Sagresti has left her hometown of Piacenza 30 years ago to study art in the UK and France. She went on to live in the USA, Israel and several countries of the Far East. Two years ago she returned to Italy to open two art galleries in Rome where she features works of different artists as well as her own. If you feel inspired you can sign up online for one of her art classes. What makes Rome the perfect place for your Art Galleries? Simply because it is the most beautiful, historical and stimulating place in the world. The weather is perfect, you find Italy’s best fruits and vegetables here and you get a delicious cappuccino for only 1 € - if you don’t sit down ;-) What more do you want as inspiration for beautiful artwork?
Why did you decide to come back to Italy? Having lived abroad in so many different cultures I have developed a kind of love-hate relationship with my home country. I had always toyed with the idea of coming back and as British nobleman Baron Rothschild put it: "the time to buy is when there's blood in the streets". So this seemed the perfect moment for me to start a new venture here in Rome.
ART GALLERY ROMA CATERS TO ART LOVERS ALL AROUND THE GLOBE. HOW DOES THAT WORK? The possibility of buying directly from the artists makes original art available for everyone, without sacrificing the quality. We offer authentic, unique oil paintings for an exclusively affordable price, making it possible to buy it either in person or online with a free worldwide shipping option. By simply sending us a photo, our customers can also commission a painting that will be delivered to their doorstep in 30 days. We try to make a difference by offering the best quality and service for the best price. INSIGHTDESIGNGUIDE.COM

Mawlana is an exceptional store for many reasons. It is the only shop presented in this guide that does not sell products made in Italy, yet it perfectly represents the spirit of traditional craft and contemporary design. It is a family business founded in 1820 that had a shop in the oldest covered market in the world - the Al-Medina Souq in Aleppo, Syria. In 2011 the family moved to Istanbul where they design and produce silk, cashmere, fur and woolen scarves and stoles. Since they draw a lot of inspiration from Italian fashion it was a natural step to open this shop in 2016. So finally Rome boasts its own lavish bazar offering you not only exquisite scarves and stoles but also baby cashmere sweaters, hand made pillow covers and an exclusive collection of hand crafted jewelry.

Luca is a true Roman. His childhood playground was the Piazza in front of the Pantheon where he used to ride his scooter. The area was much different then. The restaurants that now bustle with tourists housed a variety of vendors from the mushroom market to the butcher who advertized his merchandise by hanging a pig in front of his shop. It was probably that urban atmosphere that inspired Luca's contemporary look. Luca's love for "everything vintage" finds it’s expression in every detail of his trendy boutique and the "British/Dandy" style of clothes you will find here. Luca sees his shop as the extension of his wardrobe and choses outfits and accessories with the same care and diligence that he would exert for himself. After 30 years of experience with international fashion retail business he decided to focus on promoting Italian design and craftsmanship and to offer his clients a handpicked list of designers that focus on individuality and exclusivity rather than on big brand names. His watches, glasses and bracelets with maritime details will complement your look.

HIDDEN SpOTS Rome is a bustling city that can sometimes overwhelm you with its loudness and chaos. Those in the know appreciate its quieter spots that are veritable oases of beauty and like to keep it to themselves. Now you can be in on it too. 1 The courtyard of Il Museo Nazionale di palazzo Venezia
This 15th century palazzo stands in one of the busiest squares in Rome and yet, once you have stepped inside, the unsettling noise of the traffic in Piazza Venezia will fade to the background and you will be able to sit down, inhale and relax.
2 Il passetto del Biscione
Just a few meters from Campo de' Fiori there is a semihidden passage that connects Piazza del Biscione with Via di Grottapinta. The Roman saying "andare a cercare Maria per Roma", "to look for Mary all over Rome" is linked to the passetto, as the devotees of the sacred image of the Madonna of Divine Providence had to engage in a complicated search among the narrow streets of the historic center to find this well hidden passage.
3 The courtyard of Il Chiostro del bramante - via arco della pace 5
Next to Piazza Navona, you can find this extraordinary example of Renaissance architecture by Donato Bramante. It is now a museum that hosts various exhibitions but the courtyard is accessible to the public without a fee.
