COVER STORY When describing St. Peter’s Square and St. Peter’s Basilica, awe-inspiring, breathtaking and monumental are just some of the adjectives that come to mind. Incidentally, that is exactly the effect that its numerous architects like Bramante, Michelangelo, Maderno and Bernini aimed for. Where the lavish basilica was erected from 1506 to 1626 once stood a much smaller church that had been built by the emperor Constantine around 320 to mark the burial site of the apostle St. Peter. It seems odd that an Egyptian obelisk stands in front of this Christian basilica but it has been put here for a very specific reason; for "the witness", as it is called, had once stood in the circus of Nero where St. Peter was crucified in 37 AD. If you are lucky enough to be in Rome during the Christmas season, be sure not to miss the magnificently decorated St. Peter’s Square with its life-size nativity scene and impressive Christmas tree.

EDITOR’S LETTER Dear READER You have picked the perfect time to visit Rome. The fall and winter season usually spoils us with mild weather, which is great for exploring the city, visiting the famous antique sites and experiencing Rome to its fullest. Now the market stalls are filled with colorful autumn fruits and vegetables, that also find there way onto restaurant menus - seasonal specialties like pumpkin, porcini mushrooms, artichokes, truffles, figs, radicchio or chestnuts are delicacies not to be missed. Apart from the delights of Roman cuisine, there are some truly unique shops in the city that showcase the talent and skill of uncompromising artisans devoted to their craft. This tradition that has been lost in many other cities around the world is still very much alive in Rome and the list of traditional craftsmen is constantly being invigorated by young, talented designers. In this edition of Insight Design Guide we present a carefully selected list of outstanding boutiques that offer traditional Italian products like leather goods and fashion. You will also find an array of little workshops for your Christmas and souvenir shopping. ROME: A FEAST FOR ALL YOUR SENSES IN THIS ISSUE OF IDG WE PROUDLY PRESENT ANDREA MORAES OF THE CANDLE STORE AND MARTA RATAJCZAK OF MARTA RAY, TWO WOMEN WHO HAVE TRANSFORMED THEIR CREATIVITY INTO SUCCESSFUL BUSINESSES AND WHO SHARE A PASSION FOR SUMPTUOUS COLORS AND HARMONIC LINES. WE ALSO TALKED TO ATTILIO PROIETTI OF MORIONDO E GARIGLIO TO GET AN INSIGHT INTO THE TASTE OF ROMAN CHOCoHOLICS.
MORIONDO E GARIGLIO, ATTILIO PROIETTI The story of Moriondo e Gariglio is linked to the historical period of the Risorgimento when a newly established Italian bourgeoisie discovered - and was able to afford - the luxurious treat of sweet chocolate. MORIONDO E GARIGLIO has a proud history of over 150 years. How did it all start? In 1850, two cousins, Agostino Moriondo & Francesco Gariglio, opened their little chocolate manufactory in Turin. The company name quickly became synonymous with mouthwatering chocolate delights and the shop was moved to Rome, the new capital of unified Italy.
a basket of dark chocolate filled with a silky cream. All of these varieties have been manufactured following the same recipes for over 100 years.
What were their first varieties? What are your typical flavors? Among our trademark chocolates are the Stella Oro which is a dark chocolate dome filled with a cream of milk chocolate and crunchy hazelnuts, the Menta Milano, a dark chocolate with mint crystals, and the Parisienne,
What chocolate flavors are typical for this time of the year? The most typical seasonal treat is the Marron Glacé, the glazed chestnut. It is the Roman's favorite flavor for autumn and Christmas.

THE CANDLE STORE, ANDREA MORAES As far back as she can remember, Andrea Moraes has been attracted to the warmth of a candlelight and the dancing shadows it creates. Twenty years ago, she turned this passion into her profession.
Andrea, what inspires THE MULTITUDE of colors and shapes in your workshop? My candles are a reflection of how I am feeling and what I am thinking about at the moment of their creation. Working with wax, playing with the different colors and scents is like a therapy for me, it relaxes me. Therefore, I draw my inspiration from my personal experiences. How is a crude block of wax transformed into an artistic design object? It all begins with the selection of raw materials: from the colors that ensure the maximum
12
INSIGHTDESIGNGUIDE.COM
brightness and shine, to the fragrances of the essential oils that spread a pleasant, never intrusive scent. I first create a block of colored layers of wax that is then carved and shaped, similar to the techniques of a sculptor. You say that lighting a candle is like a liturgy? What exactly do you mean by that? For me, lighting a candle is vital like breathing. It is a multisensory experience that creates a certain atmosphere and can be enjoyed at any moment; at dinner, while working or watching TV and of course when you invite friends and family. There is a perfect candle for every occasion and there should be no occasion without a candle.
MARTA RAY, MARTA RATAJCZAK Marta Ratajczak is a designer with a clear vision and an eye for the demands of modern, independent women. She presented her first collection in 2009 and quickly established Marta Ray as an upand-coming brand. Marta, in creating your own handbags you have embarked on an adventure that was an overnight success. How do you explain that? Well, you told me yourself that you immediately fell in love with one of my bags when you saw it in the store, being the kind of bag you have been wanting for a long time. Actually, I designed my first collection because I felt that my kind of bag, soft, versatile and with clear lines was not available on the market. Luckily, many women felt the same way and so I remained true to my approach ever since by giving women options that stimulate their own creativity. This concept continuous to resonate with my clientele.
Marta Ray is an evolving brand. Where are you taking it next? Currently, Marta Ray specializes in high-quality ballerinas and sandals at affordable prices that are available in various forms, types of leather, manufacturing techniques and an ever increasing palette of colors. The next step is to expand my line of shoes even further. After extensive research I have finally found the right kind of leather and the skilled craftsmen who can transform my designs into the exquisite footwear that my customers have come to expect of Marta Ray. The upcoming launch of my first summer collection will mark the beginning of this new challenge.

hidden spots Rome is a bustling city that can sometimes overwhelm you with its loudness and chaos. Those in the know appreciate its quieter spots that are veritable oases of beauty which they prefer to themselves. Now you can be in on it too. 1 Pozzo Corridor at Chiesa Il Gesù
Piazza del Gesù Mon-Sat 4pm-6pm, Sun 10am-12pm The corridor linking the church to the monastery is the impressive work of Baroque painter Andrea Pozzo. Seen from up close, the figures are strangely distorted and reveal the technique behind this false perspective, while from a certain viewpoint they create the perfect illusion of a much longer corridor. 2 Palazzo MATTEI
Via Michelangelo Caetani, 32 Just around the corner from Piazza Mattei and the enchanting Fontana delle Tartarughe in the Ghetto lies this early 17 th century palazzo with its two marvelous courtyards. The walls decorated with a rich mix of antique fragments and baroque stucco elements set the scene for numerous marble statues, busts and sarcophagi. Be sure not to miss the spectacularly decorated staircase! 3 GALLERIA SCIARRA
Connects Via Marco Minghetti and Piazza dell’ Oratorio This private covered courtyard near the Trevi fountain is open to the public during business hours and is one of the few examples of Art Nouveau in Rome. Meant as a "glorification of the woman" the paintings by Giuseppe Cellini represent the personified virtues of women and scenes from everyday life.
