DAY 2 – TRACKS 23 MAY 2019 TRACK 4: WOOD AND HEALTH 13.20-14.50
Among the benefits of building with wood, indoor climate and health are often believed to be affected positively. But what does the research say? This track will include presentations on whether these assumptions are built on real facts and experiences. Moderator: Carsten Rode, Professor in Building Physics, Technical University of Denmark CONTROLLING THE INDOOR ENVIRONMENT USING WOOD – THE EFFECT OF INTERIOR CLIMATE ON HUMAN’S HEALTH AND WELL-BEING The properties of wood can be used to passively influence or control the interior environment of a building, which can then influence comfort and health. Mark Hughes shares his studies on how the amount of wood, the orientation of the exposed surface, the species and whether it is coated or not all play an important role in determining the magnitude of the effect Mark Hughes, Professor Wood Technology, Aalto University (FI) DO WOODEN BUILDING MATERIALS AFFECT INDOOR AIR QUALITY? Indoors human wellbeing is not only affected by the climatic conditions but also by the concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOC). Sources of these VOCs might be building materials, furniture, human activities or the outside air. For wood products, this is of fundamental importance, as wood as an organic material can contain a number of substances that are volatile under normal conditions - the typical smell of pine wood is one of them. My presentation will cover regulations for construction products as well as on indoor air quality and how wood materials perform in this context. Dr. Martin Ohlmeyer, Head of Unit Human Health and Consumer Protection, Thünen Institute of Wood Research (DE) WOOD AND HEALTH FROM AN ARCHITEC’S PERSPECTIVE Pi Ekblom is an Architect and Responsible for Development of Wood at White Architects. Her focus is in the field of wood as an ecological material, with benefits in human health, architectural design and building processes. On “Build In Wood” she will focus on the health aspects of wood and how it affects the people experiencing the architecture based on studies and experiences from White Architects’ many wood projects. DAY 2 – TRACKS 23 MAY 2019 TRACK 5: LIFE OF WOOD 13.20-14.50
Durability is a key consideration in the use of wood in construction and the lack thereof has often been cited as one of the ”disadvantages” of wood. However, should a wood construction fail, perhaps it is more related to the way it was built than the material itself. This track introduces you to solutions if problems should arise. It also introduces you to another perspective, how wood develops on outdoor facades and why that might not be a bad thing. Moderator: Mikael Koch, Director, Træinformation THE RISK OF BIODETERIORATION OF MODERN TIMBER CONSTRUCTIONS - INCREASED AWARENESS, KNOWLEDGE AND RISK MANAGEMENT SHOWN BY THE EXAMPLE OF TIMBER FACADES Building in wood is fantastical, but it demands that the risk for biodeterioration must be taken into consideration during the whole planning period. Architects and builders must be able to identify the main causal agency in any instance and sharpen the risk awareness. Modern building technics, modern combinations of material and timber products may result in unexpected rise of moisture damages inside the constructions. The risk for biodeterioration of wood will be shown by the example of wooden facades. Angela Steinfurth, Vice Director, Goritas & Master of science (M. Sc.) Wood science and technology, Dipl.-Holzwirt NATURAL WEATHERING COLORS OF WOOD FACADES DEVELOPED IN DANISH CLIMATE The interactions of building and façade design, wood quality, climate and microfungi will over time develop the color finishes of unpainted wood facades in processes collectively referred to as weathering. This lecture discusses the weathering colors of the wood facades at Lisbjerg Bakke north of Århus and the combined showroom and outdoor wood weathering laboratory to be constructed at Superwood Headquartes in Hampen. Majbrit Hirche, Architect, Ph.D.

DAY 2 – TRACKS 23 MAY 2019 TRACK 6: FOREST & DOCUMENTATION 13.20-14.50
Wood is a renewable resource that plays an important role in meeting UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. In this track, following questions will be elaborated on: What is the status of the forest areas in Denmark and around the world? What role does certification of the wood play and what should we consider while choosing material? Moderator: Rob Marsh, Head of Sustainability, C.F. Møller USING TIMBER AND ITS CIRCULARITY Timber is a renewable material with low environmental impact that captures, recycles and sequestrates large amounts of CO2 pollution . Timber buildings in the circular economy can lock greenhouse gasses away for centuries, supporting long term aims for carbon neutrality. Rob Marsh, Head of Sustainability, C.F. Møller CURRENT CONDITIONS OF THE SUSTAINABILITY OF DANISH FORESTS AND DOCUMENTATION OF WOOD RESOURCES Hear about the current conditions of the Danish forests and how the sustainability is measured. Vivian Kvist Johannsen will also go through different documentation approaches and provide a crucial understanding of what to take into account when choosing between different wood products as a construction material. Vivian Kvist Johannsen, Head of Division at University of Copenhagen of Forest, Nature and Biomass ASSURANCE OF LEGAL AND SUSTAINABLE FOREST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES There is an increasing focus on legal and sustainable timber supply chains in the building sector. Michael K Jakobsen will talk about how businesses can avoid risks in their timber supply chains and establish responsible sourcing practices that meet market demands by implementing due diligence practices and through sourcing of certified timber products. Michael K Jakobsen, Customer Relations Manager, Nepcon
