In modern society, the human desire to develop meaningful connections and a sense of belonging has never been stronger, and yet for many, a sense of isolation prevails. HIGH NOTE Star soprano Measha BrueggergosmanLee returns to the stage in Opera Atelier’s production of Dido and Aeneas by Henry Purcell. First composed in the 1680s, it has all the markers of a timeless tale — broken hearts, evil schemes, an untimely death and haunting music, of course. GOODEE on them: Identical twins Byron and Dexter Peart run their home-focused company on the premise of good design, businessinclusivenesssustainability, andethicalpractices.

By David Kaufman Back in 2007, the identical twins Byron and Dexter Peart launched WANT Les Essentiels, an apparel and accessories brand whose mix of traditional craft and contemporary styling immediately made it one of Canada’s hottest labels. WANT shops opened across the country, along with a flagship store in New York City, and the brand achieved cult-like status by aesthetes in-the-know.Adecadelater, the Peart brothers pivoted and sold WANT, so they can concentrate on GOODEE, a curated marketplace purveying homeware and lifestyle products that are both sustainable and beautiful. “We’ve always focused on products that were not just sustainable but also built to last,” says Dexter. “GOODEE was born from a desire to bring amazing brands together that speak a similar language of sustainability [and truly caring] for the environment.” Featuring some 70 brands, GOODEE spans the spectrum, from eclectic furniture and sculptural baskets to chic garden tools and imaginative, functional kids’ stuff. And although intent on showcasing Canadian talent, the Pearts also want the company to be global. This means the brothers regularly go on trips around the world to find premium products to enhance the GOODEE label. But when not travelling, the twins happily immerse themselves in everything that is unique about their hometown. For starters, both used to live in Habitat 67, the iconic housing complex designed by Israeli-Canadian architect Moshe Safdie. For Dexter, who’s still a resident there, what’s most compelling about his city’s culinary scene is how truly local it is — Montréalers dining on food prepared by local chefs using ingredients from local suppliers. “They’re small and independent,” he notes, “and [everything] feels totally fresh — and totally Montréal.”

The brothers Peart share what they love about Montréal and the joys of dining out in their lively, lovely city.

“We have known the Olive’s founders, Dyan [Solomon] and Eric [Girard], for years and have become devoted patrons of this first-rate bakery, café and restaurant literally since the day it opened almost 25 years ago,” says Byron. “And as you can see from its buzzy crowd, we’re not the only ones who keep coming back.” Indeed. Patrons are happy to line up to experience the fresh sweet and savoury baked goods, including the delectable brioche à la canelle , as well as the always-in-demand artisanal sandwiches, such as the Pearts’ favourite Le Chicken Melt. 351 rue Saint-Paul ouest; oliveetgourmando.com

Tucked away in a nondescript building in the Saint-Henri neighbourhood, Gia is a gem of a restaurant and wine bar unlike any other in the city. The stylish yet inviting interior, the knowledgeable, friendly staff and the sophisticated food/ beverage menus all sum up to offer a lovely insider dining experience. And though decidedly plant-forward, the menu also serves up meat options, such as tartare de canard and saucisse d’agneau The wine list is as much a journey as the menu, boasting a carefully selected offering of organic, biodynamic and sustainable wines from Italy and beyond. 1025 rue Lenoir; giagiagia.com

Step into this local institution and you quickly feel like you’ve been transported to the Middle East. The cozy, welcoming vibe makes Damas ideal, whether it’s for a date night or a family gathering. The tasting menu is a tour de force of culinary delights. living room and bathroom, when used as a home-wide system, stylistic consistency is guaranteed, provided a living environment committed to contemporary design. Available in aluminum and three different colours (white, anthracite and titanium), the 29mm deep frame door is minimalist and works seamlessly with additional material combinations including lacquered finishes, decorative melamine, veneered finishes and glass. In the creation of the collection, Nichetto considered all elements of the design. The new handles are a stand-out feature with the curved tubular handle that outlines that door surface, turning function into form and reinforcing the design dedication.

INSPIRED BY AMERICAN PAINTER ELLSWORTH KELLY, ITALIAN architect Gio Ponti, and American large-scale contemporary artist Donald Judd, the Jeometrica system from Scavolini is the modernday answer to contemporary chic at home. Designed by Luca Nichetto, an Italian designer based in Stockholm, Jeometrica is an expressive furnishings system that highlights not only the sophistication of geometric design and the power of minimalistic multiples but relies on the excellence that is Scavolini’s industrial processing. And thanks to their constant research and development, this collection features new elements that highlight compositional silhouettes. Ideal for the kitchen, Jeometrica by Scavolini for simply stylish solutions.

The system is flexible, allowing for shelves, containers and small accessories to be added, removed and rearranged for complete freedom and the ultimate in versatility. To integrate seamlessly into everyday life, the wall panel is available in three shapes — round, teardrop and rectangular which can be customsized and installed vertically or horizontally to work with any space. To round out the space and collection, Nichetto designed accessories that further bring the contemporary design vision to life. The range includes chairs, stools, tables and lamps, which, when working alongside the shelves and visible solutions, creates a new expression of design for a sophisticated, cosmopolitan style.

Brandon Olsen and his wife Brittany bring luxury dining and ultimate comfort to their clients with an at-home fine dining business.

FOOD19HOUSE-MADEEVERYTHING Restaurant patrons, rejoice. Options are on the table for premium food products and full-service meals — right at home.

THIS PAGE: Chef Barbode Soudi prepares Persian delights for Sima, his in-home food business. Photo: Courtesy of Sima. OPPOSITE: Brunette founder Dave Rose helped evolve food retail through his e-commerce venture which offers everything from t-shirts to hot sauce from the country’s top restos.

FOOD20I

n the summer of 2021, Brandon Olsen had a secret. The year before, the Toronto-based chef had walked away from La Banane, in a highly publicized conflict with the restaurant’s partners, King Street Company. With no source of income, Olsen accepted a few gigs cooking privately for former clients but insisted on a social media embargo until he could fully commit to the endeavour. However, as is wont with hush-hush projects, Olsen’s eventually got found out. Through word-of-mouth, insiders learned they might be able to hire him for a fivecourse menu — say, tuna in brown butter, followed by seared foie gras with apricot and brioche, plus a raw bar and canapés — at their home or cottage. By summer’s end last year, requests had become more frequent.

One client commissioned Olsen for a party in August, then immediately booked another for Labour “BrittanyDay.said, ‘This could be a thing’ — dinner at home,” says Olsen, referring to his wife’s prediction. “It solves a lot of problems for people fighting for that 7:30 pm Friday reservation. No maître d is going to say, ‘It’s 8:45 pm. We need the table back at nine.’ There is no pressure to get coffee and the bill and leave.” It was in January of this year that the couple decided to stop being clandestine.

“There was no online platform to buy goods from restaurants. If you wanted a Joe Beef T-shirt, you had to get a reservation, go for dinner and get a busboy to fetch one from the basement.”

For Soudi, who’s eager to open his own restaurant, cooking for private patrons provides a way to forge a reputation with his target clientele while seeking investors and testing out menu ideas for Sima, a Persian restaurant named after his mother.

FOOD21

While hiring a chef to cook a fine-dining restaurant meal at one’s home may be for special occasions, the trend of restaurants dipping a toe into retail has also enabled patrons to experience other elements of luxury dining at home. During the stop-and-go of the last two years, savvy restaurateurs have diversified their revenue streams — takeout, delivery, meal kits, cocktails to-go, bottle shops, frozen meals, pizza subscriptions, etc. — to avoid reliance on dine-in service. “A lot of purchases during Covid-19 were emotionally driven,” notes Dave Rose, founder of Brunette, an online platform where Canadian restaurants sell everything from Au Pied de Cochon Old Style Maple Dijon Mustard to Joe Beef Thousand Island Mayonnaise to toques from St-Viateur Bagel. “People wanted to help restaurants.

Meanwhile, for Olsen, the idea of yet another restaurant — fundraising at least a million dollars of capital, staffing up during a labour crisis, dealing with landlords — is the last thing he wants at the moment.

“[Cooking for clients at home] is a perfect business for us right now. We don’t pay rent. We’re not sitting on inventory.” And it goes both ways. The dynamic pampers the diners too Olsen points out. “You get to have your own personal chef in your house. And it’s your house. You don’t have to dress up. You’re never going to get kicked out. It’s perfect for what our clients want.”

We saw the data.” In 2015, Rose — a veteran of the Montréal restaurant industry (Joe Beef, Liverpool House, Le Vin Papillon, Le Majestique) — had launched Smoke Show, a sauce-and-spice business. After a few years of growth, his old bosses from Joe Beef asked who was selling his products online. They were surprised to hear he was doing it himself. “They asked me to sell Joe Beef stuff. I said, ‘I don’t want to build your brand.’ Then a lightbulb went off,” says Rose. “There was no online platform to buy goods from restaurants. If you wanted a Joe Beef T-shirt, you had to get a reservation, go for dinner and get a busboy to fetch one from the basement.” Rose then launched Brunette in 2018. And when the pandemic hit, restaurateurs, desperate for revenue, began contacting him, looking to place their products on Brunette.

“I’ve cooked for 80 per cent of the wealthy of this city,” says Barbode Soudi. As the former chef de cuisine of Alo, one of Toronto’s most celebrated restaurants, Soudi is not exaggerating. “But I don’t know any of them. I have to kick down those doors to get into that circle. I thought that doing private dinners would be the bestTheway.”pop-up event circuit is great for entrepreneurs who want to build a brand, say, for a fried-chicken-sandwich business. But chefs can’t be serving up their tasting menus at a food truck rally. “Some people, they gravitate to pop-ups to test out a concept before opening a brickand-mortar,” says Soudi. “For me, [given] the demographic I’m appealing to, private dinners will be a better test.”

Branding their business Le Melon, they created an Instagram account. Within a month, Toronto Life magazine wrote an article about it. The next morning, their DMs were flooded with requests. By late May, there was enough demand that Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays were booked solid into November. “I think in-home dining is here to stay for the foreseeable future,” says Olsen. “It’s not to replace restaurants. It’s a nice addition to that.”

Since then, many owners have figured out how to sell retail directly through their own websites, but Brunette is still the one-stop shop where restaurant-goers buy gifts from a curated selection of brands. For some in the restaurant industry, however, luxury at-home dining isn’t about sales but about building an audience — that is, a specific one.

HOMING IN ON HEALTH

“They’re now asking for systems that filter air the way a plane does or for features like UV-protected windows. Even the paint used in their homes has to be healthy.”

In 2020, many of us scrambled to carve out space for a dedicated home office, and many realized too the necessity of an exercise studio at home during the pandemic.

This focus on healthy bodies and minds has also sparked a desire for more sophisticated home fitness facilities as well as spa-like amenities that provide therapeutic benefits. Homebuyers across the country are demonstrating a renewed regard for holistic wellness, according to Sotheby’s International Realty Canada Realtors®. Dismissing the basic treadmill setup, some homeowners in Montréal commissioned the construction of full-scale Pilates or barre environments that recreate the spacious, light-filled professional studios where they used to go. Communal versions of such facilities have also been popping up in local condos.

Creating a home that anticipates future health requirements involves two key strategies — ensuring that passageways are barrier-free to accommodate mobility devices down the road, and, for multi-storey houses, planning for an elevator. “You don’t necessarily need to put in an elevator until you’re ready for it, but it’s easier later on if you factor into your plans the space for it,” Dickson explains. As well, this looking-ahead perspective is a savvy financial game plan, says Dickson. “If you have aging-in-place in mind, your house will be worth more. But beyond just adding to your investment, it will help if, for instance, you suddenly have to care for a parent or you encounter a health setback of your own.”

Homeowners have become more wellness-focused, post-pandemic, opting for ramped-up home gyms and outdoor space for urban farming.

VICTORIA Given that many people flock to the capital of British Columbia for its balmy climate, it should come as no surprise that local wellness devotees are focusing on their homes’ outdoor space. Glynis MacLeod, Senior Vice President of Sales at Sotheby’s International Realty Canada and a multiple Gold MLS Award recipient, reports on the renewed appetite for urban farming. “Covid highlighted what people feel they really need, and now they’re growing their own greens. It’s a trend that has expanded to some condo buildings, which now have rooftop gardens with raised veggie planterManyboxes.”properties in Victoria are also incorporating environmental features that contribute to peace of mind. “Seeing the environment all around you on a daily basis is a reminder of how important it is to value it,” notes Sotheby’s International Realty Canada Sales Associate Kirsten MacLeod. She points to Dockside Green, a recent development with calming ponds and streams that flow between the buildings, utilizing recycled grey water from the condo units. It’s a big-picture approach to wellness that has been taken even further by some condominiums that now cater, not just to the residents but also to their pets. A few condo buildings have their own dog parks, according to Kirsten, as well as indoor dog washing stations. It’s a smart wellness-oriented strategy. As any dog owner will attest, a healthy, happy emotional support animal makes for a healthy, happy human.

“We’ve seen a few buildings where party or entertainment rooms not being used were converted into functional Pilates studios,” says Liza Kaufman. “Even now that professional studios have reopened, people don’t necessarily want to leave home to go to them.” And post-workout spa amenities are getting equal attention. One of her clients installed a Himalayan salt room, while others opted for an infrared sauna or hot and cold pools — all of which reportedly help alleviate inflammation.

TORONTO It’s regular exercise that has the biggest impact on our overall health, says Allan Consky, a Senior Vice President of Sales at Sotheby’s International Realty Canada. “That’s the bottom line.” And many of his clients would agree. Consky reports that cycling has eclipsed golf as the Bay Street crowd’s physical activity of choice, and while Toronto has many excellent biking trails, a lot of the pedalling is taking place from the convenience of home. “Back in the 2000s, even if it was a cold winter day, you would find 30 cyclists out on the routes. But now, in wintertime, everybody’s doing indoor training.” According to Consky, virtual workout platforms like Zwift, which allows cyclists to pedal through digital recreations of popular bike routes, have been impacting fitness in a major way. As a cyclist himself, Consky admits he’d be drawn to any property that includes a storage facility for a full-on collection of training, racing and commuting bikes. One owner who’s also a cyclist, he says, even installed a bike workshop in his basement, complete with a ramp to facilitate easy transport between floors.

EDMONTON Ron Dickson, a Senior Vice President of Sales at Sotheby’s International Realty Canada, has also noticed a marked increase in more elaborate home gyms being built in Edmonton — some of them with rubber flooring for better traction — as well as postworkout relaxation amenities. “And because we’re in Edmonton,” he notes, “people are pretty serious about their hot tubs.” The smartest way to boost long-term wellness in the home, however, is to incorporate aging-in-place features, according to Dickson. “Oftentimes, when people are selling, it’s because their home doesn’t suit their needs anymore. They would love to stay in the same place, but they just can’t.”

Luckily, some of those questions are ones you can design answers for. For example, in mountain towns including Sun Peaks and Canmore, Alberta, heated driveways to help with the snowfalls are growing in popularity. Homes in Canmore, (which is tucked in a valley and scales up a mountainside,) tend to be multi-level, so in-home elevators are common, as are main-floor master bedrooms.

In a community like Sun Peaks, a municipality built right onto a ski resort, the advantages are clear — a day by the lake watching baby turtles hatching on the banks, eagles nesting in the trees and a night of stargazing the Milky Way. Proximity to a hospital, an international airport, and a steady dose of green and blue-rated ski runs are also pluses, as is the neighbourhood called The Cottages and The Cabins, a fairytale-like enclave where Hallmark films its Christmas movies. (Yes, really.) But living in a community where going grocery shopping can be an endeavour and long Canadian winters fill driveways with fluffy snow, offer things to consider for people looking to buy property they can grow into.

the difference.

G etting older comes with changes, but in Canada, there have never before been as many options for aging in place in communities big, and small. For people who value an active lifestyle, and individuals who are looking to maintain their culturally plugged-in life well into retirement years, deciding on where to plant roots for the long-term comes with a few considerations — infrastructure, design and welcoming communities. “What am I going to do? Is it too isolated? What’s the community like? Is there good health-care? How am I going to get food? These are all things you’re going to want to ask yourself,” says Gianpiero Furfaro, managing broker for Sotheby’s International Realty Canada at Sun Peaks, British Columbia.

As more Canadians choose to in place, selecting community and making all

In Prince Edward County, Ontario, broker Iris Andrews says she’s seeing more design customizations geared toward future needs than ever before. Clients are looking at easily maneuverable kitchens with wide berths around islands, pullout pantries and appliances that can be adjusted by height. In bathrooms, says Andrews, slip-resistant tiles and textured hardwood belie heated floors, and walk-in showers now have devices like grab-bars already integrated to fit the aesthetic, in sleek, modern finishes. She says people are also designing right down to the doorknobs, installing lever door handles on interior doors for when turning doorknobs eventually becomes a challenge.

Another critical component to aging in place is staying active, says Chris Vincent, managing broker in Canmore, Alberta, which is surrounded by mountains. Ski teams at Norquay, a nearby resort, boast members in their 90s, and a neighbourhood like Spring Creek hosts active hiking and biking groups through its homeowners association and seniors’ facility. “That way, even if people are moving to the community when they’re newly retired, there’s a way for them to make friends,” he says. In Sun Peaks, Furfaro says he knows a local 70-something who paraglides and participates in Ironman competitions with his son. “Here, there’s an activity for everyone. People are happy and they want to do things, which keeps the mind sharp,” he says. “It makes you motivated to get out of the house and move.”

And while Prince Edward County offers waterfront property steps from the sprawling beaches of Sandbanks Provincial Park, Andrews says it’s the people that are the real draw. “We live in a community where there are lots of friends and neighbours who embrace small-town living. It takes you back to the days when you were growing up, when neighbours all really looked out for each other,” Andrews says. “In town at the grocery store, people will carry your bags out for you. The pharmacist knows you by name, will sort out all your pills for you and deliver them. You’re not forgotten living in a community like this. You’re a significant part of it. I think that’s a healthier way to age.”

Wainwright’s memoir clarifies which songs offer clues on how her discography foreshadows her biography. One such song is “Far Away,” which Wainwright released in 2005 and which, most recently, she has been regularly revisiting on the stage. The lyrics — “I have no children/I have no husband/I have no reason/To be alive/Oh, give me one… — foretold a child custody battle after the dissolution of her marriage to Brad Albetta, her former bassist and the father of her sons, Francis and Arcangelo. (They now have joint custody of the children.)

CELEBRITY26

BEING WAINWRIGHTMARTHA

In contrast, the lead single and title track of her most recent album, Love Will Be Reborn, was a sonic crystal ball. It was written during a dark time in her life, while the divorce litigation was going on, and yet, Wainwright’s optimism was apparent, as the song’s title suggests.

“There are songs on all my past records that talked about my difficult marriage, so that you could kind of see what was going to happen before it happened,” Wainwright says. “The songs got more and more telling of the difficulty. It got so that the lines of art imitating life and life imitating art were completely blurred.”

Out of the one-liners in her memoir, Stories I Might Regret Telling You, the Canadian-American singersongwriter Martha Wainwright claims that one particular selfobservation speaks volumes: “I’m less Sophia Loren and more Anna Magnani.” “I know it’s ridiculous to pair myself up with one of the greatest dramatic actresses in history,” Wainwright says, via Zoom, laughing while trying to explain the context of her text message. She’s speaking from the living room of her home in Montréal — a rambling Victorian house bought some 25 years ago by her late mother, Anna McGarrigle (of the famed sister folk duo Kate & Anna McGarrigle). It’s the birthplace of hundreds of songs written by her and her famous family, which includes her Aunt Anna, her brother, Rufus, and her father, Loudon Wainwright III. It is also where she first saw, on TV, Anna Magnani’s rage theatrics, subtitles and all. “In movies she was in, like L’Amore, I see myself as very Magnani-like, the way she openly and outwardly shows her franticism and intensity,” Wainwright says. “She had this reckless abandon to her…. [She] didn’t try to be in control of her emotions or her art. She just let it be wild. I never saw myself as Sophia Loren but [as] Anna Magnani, [who], while still beautiful, isn’t about being an ideal feminine archetype of sexuality. And neither am I.” Referencing her connection to the Italian actress isn’t that far off. Magnani, like Wainwright, never formally studied her craft. The actress was first a singer, and dubbed, in her salad days, the Edith Piaf of Italy, learning how to emote by performing heartbreaking, dark-humoured Roman folk songs à la Piaf. Wainwright herself recorded a brilliant collection of Piaf songs in 2009 on her all-French album, Sans fusils, ni souliers, à Paris: Martha Wainwright’s Piaf Record. Also of note is how Wainwright’s six-album, 25-years-plus career has garnered critical praise, same as Magnani’s movie scenes, with reviews like “unbridled” (The New York Times), “Herculean” (Toronto Star), “self-empowered” (Pitchfork) and “ahead of her time” (The Guardian). The observation from The Guardian can easily be applied to Wainwright’s songs, such as “BMFA.” Embraced more than a decade after it was recorded, “BMFA” was subsequently rediscovered when it was included in the soundtracks of HBO’s Emmy-winning series Big Little Lies and Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black. This lateto-be-embraced phenomenon is something Wainwright has since grown accustomed to, although, as her book chronicles in detail, it tormented her for years.

“The inner person in me knew that deep

“I had to come to terms with the fact that some of my songs are sleepers,” she admits. Then, there are those “prediction songs,” she says. “Some are like tarot cards… because they predict what is going to happen to me before it even happens.”

The musical oeuvre of the acclaimed singer and songwriter takes a page — or three — from her own passionate life story.

Martha Wainwright takes onher life story, her hometown, her past and her future, her most recent album, Love Will Be Reborn, and her memoir, Stories I Might Regret Telling You Photo: Getty Images down, things were going to get better and a new love would show up, and it did. I ended up writing a love song for the second half of my life and then living it.” Sometime after her divorce was finalized, Wainwright met her current partner, Nicolas Deslis. During the height of the pandemic, the two worked closely together to keep Ursa open — Wainwright’s hybrid café/ cabaret/music venue in Montréal’s Mile End neighbourhood. All the while, she was also leading rooftop singalongs — livestreamed local events dedicated to healthcare workers. It was during one of these spontaneous concerts that Wainwright rendered a gripping version of “Message to Michael” (renamed “Message to Martha”), which was popularized by Dionne Warwick. The performance echoed Wainwright’s own associations with other empathic, gifted women who have the power to see and sing into the future. And it can be traced to the voices that filled the halls of the house where she grew up and where she still lives. Just like operatic soothsayers Maria Callas and Renata Tebaldi and rock and folk godmothers Patti Smith and Emmylou Harris, Wainwright made career choices that have entrenched her as an iconoclast whose art defines her life and vice versa. And much like those who have paved the road before her, Wainwright’s life story will need to be adapted for the silver screen. “A film is definitely in the cards,” she says. “In my dream scenario, Gaby Hoffmann and Maggie Gyllenhaal can play me at different stages of my life. I can play my mother, and Rufus can be played by that beautiful actor who played

[drummer] Ruben Stone,” she continues, referring to Riz Ahmed, who starred in the Oscar-winning film Sound of Metal Cinematic ambitions aside, Wainwright also plans on touring extensively. She’s heading to Europe in the fall, then back to North America to do special performances anchored on the chapters in her memoir, singing her songs, as well as her mom’s songs and some of her brother’s and father’s“There’ssongs.still so much to say with music and on-page, but I’m not in a rush, so I think I’m taking 2023 off to write,” Wainwright muses, noting too that she’s working on a new book — fiction this time. “I’m sharing the last 45 years of my life with everyone, so whatever comes next will need to be as meaningful.”

ARE THERE HARD AND FAST RULES FOR DESIGNING SPACES WHERE PEOPLE WILL GATHER? No hard and fast rules. In fact, we are looking to break with the “hard and fast” and innovate around the wealth of rich historic precedents to create wonderful contemporary responses. There are types of spaces that really do work to bring people together, like atriums that have spatial quality and are generous, and well-proportioned spaces with abundant natural light and views that connect to nature. Spaces with a well-choreographed flow that encourages easy interaction. Spaces where you can perch comfortably with great views — and have an espresso!

KPMB Architects’ Marianne McKenna envisions more-inclusive spaces for a post-pandemic future.

Space may not be the final frontier for architect Marianne McKenna, but it sure is something to be reckoned with. As the founding partner of Toronto-based KPMB Architects, McKenna has won awards, including the Officer of the Order of Canada, for designs that foster community and encourage a sense of belonging. Recent projects include the revitalized Massey Hall and Park Hyatt Toronto, and her firm is at work on a new performance space in Calgary. Architecture for a post-pandemic world, McKenna says, will need to consider distance and proximity, interaction and community, and movement and storytelling — all with an eye to providing proactive solutions to the challenges presented by the climate crisis and issues of diversity, equity and inclusion. We asked her what that scenario might look like.

There will be reverberations that include allowing for comfortable distancing, but most of all, I think the pandemic has made us aware of our most vulnerable populations and the need for inclusion. Post-pandemic space will focus on breaking down the thresholds of location, economic barriers, and the perceptual barrier of “Do I belong here?”

By Dick Snyder

Proximity is a real factor. No building stands alone in its environment, whether urban or landscape. And every piece of architecture must connect to place, drawing out the best of the environment, healing and restoring, and adding back to its context. The Royal Conservatory [in Toronto] was the inspiration to restore Philosopher’s Walk and, in turn, the lobbies make that pedestrian green route through the University of Toronto campus rich and welcoming. And other KPMB projects — like the Gardiner Museum, the Rotman School [of Management] and the National Ballet School — each extend well beyond the built fabric and their property lines to contribute to the context around them.

BUILDING COMMUNITY

It’s not about size. Small parks have big impacts on our communities.

W hen it comes to urban parks, excellence comes in all sizes. There’s no disputing the allure of Manhattan’s sprawling Central Park or Barcelona’s extensive Parc de la Ciutadella. But scratch the surface of urban centres around the world and you’ll find any number of pocket parks — some no more than a city block in size — that add character and a sense of community to their neighbourhoods. Often, the best pocket parks are fiercely protected local secrets. But with some gentle sleuthing, open hearts and an insider invitation graciously extended, a visitor may gain entrée to these urban gems.

A key trait of the vibrant mini-park is its sense of place. Take Montréal’s ruelles vertes — a labyrinth of widely divergent “green alleys” featuring, perhaps, a verdant patch of garden, an herb-planted metal tub, a colourful fence mural, tandemseating Adirondack chairs in bright pink, neon-hued squares painted on the ground for impromptu hopscotch…. No two ruelles vertes are alike. Run by resident-led committees, these 450-plus city parkettes take on the particular characteristics of their“Theneighbourhoods. ruelles and how they look are mostly left up to the residents because they’re seen as an extension of the backyards

“When the community takes part in the planning and implementation, they are more invested,” notes Duke. “Everyone has a passion, and when you touch that passion, you’ve got them engaged.”

Another factor essential to the success of the pocket park is community engagement.

So, it depends how much the [residents] want to look after or develop them,” says tour guide Gabriela Blanco, a lifelong Montréaler who grew up playing in the ruelles with her friends. “Some are very laissez-faire, but the areas with a lot of families tend to have really nice ruelles because they’re a good place for community events and for kids to play in.” Many of the liveliest ruelles are located in the colourful Plateau-Mont-Royal neighbourhood, where they re-emerged, in 1995, and where some of their most active stewards are. “The community aspect plays a really big role, so the closer the neighbours are, the more developed the ruelle is likely to be and [to host] events,” saysAlthoughBlanco.

COMMUNITY BUILDING, ONE LOT AT A TIME

“Parks, green spaces, alleys — and even streets and parking lots — are personal to residents,” says Brenda Duke, who has been volunteering for the past decade in her neighbourhood, in Hamilton, Ontario.

“When they see it as ‘my park,’ they are more likely to play there, walk their dog there or use it to take a shortcut to their destination. This creates a sense of responsibility and ownership.” For a parkette to be successful, it’s important to recognize that it’s hyperlocal.

ruelles are public spaces — visitors and locals alike use them as walking routes — you could benefit from a local connection for insider information on, say, an upcoming block party or concert, or even a simple, quiet social get-together.

GROWING ENGAGEMENTCOMMUNITY

A mega park belongs to everyone — and no one in particular — which makes it logical for a city parks department to manage it. Small parks, on the other hand, have “community” built into their DNA and, as a result, they require residents to collaborate with urban planners, designers, architects and city officials. In some cases, the stakes are particularly high, as with the ongoing revitalization project in Chicago’s West Garfield Park neighbourhood, tasked with improving public safety and curtailing gun violence. To promote a sense of community through cultural and wellness programs, the city-sponsored project is currently involved in creating people-oriented spaces, including a plaza and a library, as well as converting a vacant lot into an outdoor roller-skating rink.

Tapped to helm the project was Studio Gang, an internationally positivesmallcollaborationcollaborativeyounglaunchedpinpointorganizedfirm’santi-violencecommunitythebasedarchitecture-and-urban-planningrenownedpracticeinChicago.Collaboratingwithresidentsandlocalstakeholders—leaders,outreachworkersandactivists—waskeytothestrategy.Tothatend,StudioGangresident-ledwalkingtourstocommunitypriorities.Italsoayouthleadershipprogramfordesignerstointroducethemtothedesignprocess.Thisside-by-side(insteadoftop-down)withlocalresidentsallowsparkstothinkbigandmakeaimpactontheirneighbourhoods.

“Each area is unique to the neighbourhood where it is located,” Duke points out. “Listening to the needs and desires of the community shows that their voice matters — ‘Let me tell you what we’d like. Don’t tell me what I need.’ ” For some communities, the priority could be a splash pad and playground for the children. Another neighbourhood may opt for a leash-free dog park, while another may prefer public art or a community garden with shared or private plots.

It’s this resident engagement that is likely to create ripple effects through the community. It may start with a park to entice neighbourhood citizens to stroll through, children in tow, alongside pet owners walking their dogs. And that rollerskating rink downtown? It could well spark the emergence of a generation of future civic leaders committed to developing their beloved community down the road.

As Blanco notes, a ruelle is “just a nice place for neighbours to have a drink together and catch up.”

Here in our physical realm, Lecavalier has positioned herself as one of the design field’s most exciting names. Since winning the Chloé Prize at the Hyères International Festival of Fashion and Photography in 2018, she was shortlisted, in 2019, for the illustrious LVMH Prize and was a finalist for the International Woolmark Prize in 2021. As well, Lecavalier is the first Canadian female-owned brand to show on the official Paris Fashion Week calendar (and she returned to participate this season). Lecavalier’s second time to show at the fabled fashion destination was the presentation of her label’s fall/winter 2022–23 collection. Named “Madeleine,” after her two grandmothers — both “extremely strong and independent women of their time,” she notes — the selection showcased sumptuous pieces crafted with a novel weaving technique and embellished with ribbon. work looks at the stories of my paternal grandmothers. My dad recently came into possession of a lot of family documents and photographs from the mid-nineteenth century to the 1970s. There is a diary my great-grandmother wrote in 1946. It follows her everyday life over a year. My grandmother, my great-grandmother, and my great-great-grandmother were part of a lot of historical events. For example, my great-great-grandmother was mostly likely witness to a hanging in 1885 of a group of eight Plains Cree warriors. She would have been quite young at the time and a lot of the children were brought out of the day schools or residential schools and forced to attend this execution. So, I’m trying to recount this ancestral/familial history, which includes these larger historical events, and give voice to their stories. Is your approach to film similar to your work in still photography? For example, are you looking to embody those stories through the various techniques — costume, location, performance — you’ve developed in your photography practice?

Yes, I’m taking a similar approach with creating these garments and props that give hints into the narratives. That’s important.

In one of the films, I’m playing myself in a way. Part of it starts where I’m based, just outside of Ottawa, in Québec, and then it transports me to Saskatchewan to a site in Cree Nation where my family is from. It’s a way for me to get in tune with their stories and rediscover this world where they’re from. So, it has this very dreamlike feeling, similar to the photographs. In a recent interview you talked about how your photographs are like resolved moments in a dreamscape, like a clearing in a fog. Has working in film shifted that? Maybe. Most times with my photographs, I have an initial idea, but I leave a lot to the day of photographing. What I do find different with film is that there is much more planning in terms of narrative. We’re looking at certain angles, different lenses, thinking about how one scene is going to lead to the next. And in a lot of my work there is this longing for connection. That’s maybe made more vulnerable in the films because as the subject, you feel more exposed.

Considering the intricate props and costumes that you create, is there a difference between that layering of narrative signals as compared to a more direct image? That’s just how I work. The initial idea might be quite simple, it might start with a pose, a material, a landscape. But there are things that I don’t always explain or haven’t yet explained. I’m inviting people in with my images to my mind and these vulnerabilities and questions that I’m exploring. I think that naturally evolves into creating these supporting elements that open the work to more questions. >

Everything I’ve done up to this point has reflected the stage of life that I’m in.

Your images are self-portraits but framed in the sense of a wanderer or explorer.

I’ve definitely shied away from using the term performance or performative… it just doesn’t feel true to who I am. But over time I’ve become more comfortable with the process of entering this performative world and that’s definitely changed how I see myself through the images. Even with that greater comfort level, though, it’s still about getting into the headspace where I’m really present in the moment with this narrative that I’m exploring and the emotions that I’m trying to convey. It’s tricky: it’s acting, but it’s also very real in terms of the personal thought process I’m going through.

Different people are going to look at images in different ways, so as much as I make my images around me exploring or discovering, you never know what triggers someone else’s interest as well.

I guess I’ve never found the right way to describe these characters or figures within my images. They’re me in a lot of ways — the ideas, thoughts, dreams, and questions that I’m trying to come to terms with or understand. But these figures also represent this other element in my head that’s kind of a guide, part of my spirit that is wandering and searching and seeking, and in a lot of ways is becoming stronger and more confident. Everything I’ve done up to this point has reflected the stage of life that I’m in. I don’t claim to know all of the answers; I’m someone who, like any human, is always growing and learning, and as I work more closely with historical narratives and look at how my family has survived under colonialism,

The emotion register is always there, particularly in the performative aspects of the work. You’ve said that you don’t consider yourself a performance artist.

I decided very early on that what is important is thinking about oneself. Everyone feels alone in that process of discovering who we are, but we’re all going through it for our whole lives. One of the beginning points for me was thinking about my family and that happened to be coming from two very distinct histories — one Indigenous, the other European. And I try not to be influenced by trends in the art world. We all absorb information in different ways, so I really try to work with something that is meaningful to me and hopefully that resonates with others. How do you balance the dreamlike propositions of your work versus hard realities?

there’s definitely more awareness that I’m bringing to my practice. I mean, we’re still facing significant challenges and it’s important to keep exploring that and talking about it. The evolving narrative around colonialism and Indigenous rights is in people’s minds more than ever before, particularly in the art world. Do you feel pressure to respond to that and what it means to deal with personal traumas and historical truths in a very public way?

43

For me, this dreamworld kind of goes back to kids’ books. I remember my parents, especially my mom, reading storybooks to me and feeling drawn into an imaginary world, a world that’s not yours, that you haven’t lived through, but that you are visualizing through these characters. I’m interested in taking someone to a place where there’s this beautiful panorama but also this difficult and upsetting history to consider. In some cases, the landscape provides this mood or feeling. It might not be directly looking at the historical moment that happened at this place, but it’s there. The landscape is just part of my thoughts. When I daydream, it’s about getting lost in places.

I try not to be influenced by trends in the art world.

An ancient art form is experiencing a renaissance. Born of the earth, kindled by fire and shaped by hand, ceramic art speaks to many aspects of the unpredictable state of the world we live in. It involves multiple intuitive, alchemical processes that require a certain level of performance — sculpting, throwing, shaping, firing and glazing — which makes it one the most dynamic art forms today. The practice of creating with clay, however, dates back millennia, evidenced by two noteworthy examples. Unearthed in 1925, in the Dolní Véstonice paleolithic site in the Czech Republic, the Moldavian Venus statuette was sculpted with clay and ground bone between 29,000 and 25,000 years ago and is the oldest known ceramic artifact in the world. The Terracotta Army (210–209 BCE), discovered in 1974 in northwest China, was comprised of 8,000-plus lifesize clay soldiers guarding the tomb of China’s first emperor. But in more recent art timelines, ceramics have endured a history of being overlooked, either dismissed as merely decorative, or viewed as anthropological and, consequently, relegated to history museums rather than exhibited in art galleries. One example is Pueblo pottery. Dating back AD 1050–1300, it is considered to be among the most highly developed of American Indian arts. Early Europeans arriving in the American Southwest banished the Pueblo pottery they excavated to anthropological museums and, instead, encouraged local artisans to churn out non-ceramic tchotchkes geared to the tourist trade. The HopiTewa potter Nampeyo (1860–1942), who lived on a Native American reservation in northeastern Arizona, took it upon herself to revive her people’s art. Studying the ceramics dug up by the Europeans, she utilized ancient techniques to fire and paint pottery and recreated traditional Hopi designs. Her works are now on exhibit in major art museums in the U.S. and Europe.

The perception that pottery isn’t artworthy shifted in the 20th century, when iconic artists like Picasso began exploring the art form. By the 2000s, ceramicists who later became cult figures emerged, including British potter Grayson Perry, who won the Turner Prize in 2003 for his autobiographical vases, and L.A.-based Sterling Ruby, who has collaborated with fashion designer Raf Simons. Then, multidisciplinary artists — like Kenyanborn Dame Magdalene Odundo and Chinese contemporary artist and activist Ai Weiwei — arrived on the scene, delving into ceramics in ways that transcended the concept of “applied” arts. When queried about the distinction between “fine-arts” and “craft” ceramics, Dennis Longchamps consulted his team at The Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery (CCGG), in Waterloo, Ontario. “There are no actual solid lines of demarcation, wherein one category starts and [another] ends,” says Longchamps, who is the CCGG’s executive director and chief curator. “For example, some people [would] argue that fine-arts ceramics explores concepts, such as politics, gender, race, religion…etc., while craft ceramics is purely functional or decorative. But craft ceramics [is not made within] a conceptual vacuum, either. The [aforementioned] concepts influence production, including the medium, design and price…. The décor for a plate can be conceptual, yet the form is functional. A sculptural teapot, while conceptual in form, is still a teapot, functional or not.”

It’s precisely this fluidity between conceptual and functional that makes ceramic art exciting. Ceramics are part of our daily lives, and when the art form posits challenging subjects, it’s easy to embrace them because the materials are so familiar.

installations that included basketballs floating in fish tanks, and his iconic playful Balloon animals in stainless steel. With the Banality series, he recreated — in oversized, three-dimensional porcelain renderings — everyday objects, such as kitschy collectibles, plush toys and, most famously, a life-size sculpture of pop star Michael Jackson and his chimp, Bubbles. Popples, an artwork from that series, was auctioned in April this year at Sotheby’s as part of the historic Macklowe Collection sale. In the auction catalogue, curator and art historian Nancy Spector, who has held positions at the Guggenheim and Brooklyn museums, describes how Koons created an enduring object, using the maudlin ornate Capodimonte porcelain for an old stuffed doll. “The Banality series offers a complex narrative that involves a kind of bait-andswitch for the viewer, who is at first seduced by odd but familiar forms, only to discover THIS PAGE (from top): Michael Jackson and Bubbles, 1988; porcelain. “I think that many people are striving to get in touch with their physical surroundings, and the idea of making something touchable is part of that.” that they are more polemical and more demanding at their core. They dare us to like them and then punish us when we do, despite Koons’ promises of delight and feigned innocence. This is why the sculptures, now more than three decades old, still retain their incredible shock value.” Created in 1988, Popples is number 1 from an edition of three plus one artist’s proof. At the Sotheby’s auction, it sold for US$3.9 million, almost twice the alreadyhigh estimate of $2 million. Of the recordbreaking price, Brooke Lampley — Sotheby’s Chairman and Worldwide Head of Sales for Global Fine Arts — said: “This was really a testament to the classics, the greats.” Although price cannot be the sole measure of value, the auction helped to validate the importance of ceramic art in the current market. Also of note about Popples and the rising popularity of ceramics is that many of the most-sought-after works have been created by living artists, which makes collecting them more egalitarian. “Ceramics has a history of tactility, which is one reason it is associated with accessibility,” explains Longchamps at CCGG. “I think that many people are striving to [be] in touch with their physical surroundings, and the idea of making something touchable is part of [the allure of ceramics]. As more and more of what [humans produce] is essentially conceptual, the concreteness of clay becomes more and more intriguing.” This past June, at the International Ceramic Art Fair in Toronto, art historian Anya Montiel spoke of how fortunate we are to be living in a time when we can connect, not just with art objects but also the artists themselves. “I spent the [pandemic] lockdown interviewing as many artists as I could,” says Montiel, who is a curator at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, in Washington, D.C. “[And] I was impressed that despite [these] times of uncertainty, artists continue to make works of beauty.”

Montiel references in particular the work of multidisciplinary Kahnyen’kehàka artist Santee Smith, of the Turtle Clan from Six Nations in Grand River, Ontario. Trained as a dancer, Smith incorporates performance into her pottery. Her art, notes Montiel, moves beyond boundaries with its scale — to wit, the large, intentionally cracked vessel gracing the entry courtyard of the Gardiner Museum, in Toronto — and also across time, acknowledging intergenerational tradition as well as the present day. Interested in ceramic art? Montiel’s advice: “Buy from living artists. [Develop] relationships with artists in your community, not for show but to be a good neighbour.”

In keeping with the Ace Hotel chain’s hip take on “lifestyle” common areas, the sunken lobby at Ace Sydney has plenty of vintage-vibe seating to urge socializing.

If the phrase “hotel lobby” does little to stir the emotions, there’s a good reason. With the exception of iconic stays, like the Park Hyatt Tokyo with its 41st-floor city views and marble-clad grand dames Plaza Athénée in Paris and Raffles in Singapore, most hotel lobbies have more in common with transit hubs than palaces. They’re places you pass through to, perhaps, pick up a coffee or directions on your way to somewhere else. As the first place you see upon arrival, however, the hotel lobby has a role that goes far beyond offering a venue to meet, have a drink or scroll through your phone while waiting for your taxi. It sets the tone for a guest’s entire experience, instantly establishing a vibe. Increasingly, as hotels seek to entice with exceptional features and personalized experiences, the lobby is becoming a destination unto itself. At the Ace, lobbies are typically furnished with comfy leather sofas, funky antiques and potted plants, cultivating a mood akin to a craft coffee bar. Since the Ace’s launch in Seattle, in 1999, the format has proved both popular and influential, spawning 10 locations and countless imitators, each one putting its own spin on the concept. At Reykjavik’s new Edition hotel, guests are greeted by a giant slab of black volcanic rock, strewn with Icelandic sheepskins and doubling as a seating area, while a projection of the northern lights dances across one wall. At the recently opened Maybourne Riviera, near Monaco, the hotel does away with a reception desk altogether, furnishing its light-flooded white lobby instead with showstopping art by Louise Bourgeois and Le Corbusier, a tightly curated library of art and design books, and sweeping Mediterranean views. In Toronto, The Drake Hotel’s new five-storey Modern Wing features 32 chic art-filled rooms and a lobby that feels more like a hip neighbourhood cocktail bar than the entrance to a hotel. “The lobby is very intimate in size and feel, so when we fill the space with art and objects that are conversation starters, strangers and neighbours are able to

This intimate approach to design, Lo says, extends to the hotel staff, who endeavour to connect with every guest to enhance the personalized experience. Entering the hotel through a revolving door with brass grillwork that recalls grand hotels of another era, guests find themselves in a space much like a living room — plush fabrics, handwoven rugs and an eclectic mix of vintage furniture. Dominated by a brick-clad fireplace and with artwork by Canadian artists Stephanie Temma Hier, Malik McKoy and Saimaiyu Akesuk, the Drake’s lobby proffers a stylish respite from the hustle and bustle of Queen Street West outside, with or without the house’s signature absinthe frappé cocktails in hand. “The intimate scale and idiosyncratic personality of the Drake lobby set it apart from others,” says Anwar Mekhayech, a co-founding partner of DesignAgency and the lobby’s lead designer. “It’s curated >

Other furnishings — like the massive teak-backed sofa that looks like it’s straight out of someone’s 1970s rumpus room — were sourced at antiques fairs in the U.S. “The furniture groupings are residential in scale, evoking the comforts of home, and the side and coffee tables are arranged within arm’s reach, offering a convenient place to rest a glass,” Mekhayech notes. “Lighting is also key. An eclectic mix of table and floor lamps creates an affable ambience.” All of these elements combine to give the lobby a comforting nostalgic feel layered with unexpected accents to create a sense of fun.

Meanwhile, in Richmond, B.C., Versante, a new boutique hotel, is taking its lobby in a distinctly different direction, with a space designed to appeal to one kind of traveller in particular — the social media influencer. “[Versante] celebrates everything the social media community has to offer,” says designer Adèle Rankin of Vancouver-based CHIL Interior Design. “As a society, we are now more interested than ever before in what other people are doing, how they look, what they are consuming and where they are going. In the ever-expanding outlets [where] people choose to display their lives, even areas like lobbies are now a backdrop to modern-day popularity.”

As designer Mekhayech puts it: “A hotel is your home away from home — even if your home is just around the corner. That’s not a new concept, but today we want our homes to comfortably function as an office, a social space and a retreat. The same is true for hotels. If you give people a fun place to gather, an inspiring place to work, a quiet spot to enjoy a cup of coffee or an engaging milieu to have a cocktail and people-watch, they will return again and again.”

To this end, Versante’s lobby is filled with contemporary art and sculptural modern furniture and accented with bright reflective materials and subtle nods to Asian heritage — all intended to be catnip for jet-setting Instagrammers. DESERT MODERN

TRAVEL61

From arcology to mid-century modern, this American Southwest destination offers plenty of design appeal.

OPPOSITE PAGE (from top) :: Arcosanti —designed to reimagine urbanism and inspire a different way of living. Photo: Alamy. Kick back and relax at the the Hotel Valley Ho. Photo: courtesy of Hotel Valley Ho. Scottsdale, Arizona, is long known for top-rate golf courses, premium hotels and high-end boutique shops. But if only for its architectural marvels, this resort city in the desert is worth making a trip south.

At Arcosanti — described as a “prototype arcology” — architecture and ecology meet in an ongoing, one-of-akind experiment. Built on a high desert mesa, it’s meant to be a compact, walkable community where every building is multifunctional and energy usage is minimized.

Of course, no visit to Scottsdale could be complete without a pilgrimage to Taliesin West, Frank Lloyd Wright’s winter home, built in 1937. The UNESCO World Heritage site was constructed with cement and stone, using Wright’s self-described “desert masonry” technique. Here, visitors can view, and even sit on, furniture that had been designed by the architect and his “Fellows.” These apprentices of the Taliesin Fellowship, established in Wisconsin by Wright and his wife Olgivanna, spent the winter months in Taliesin West (Soleri and Varney also apprenticed with Wright).

“There’s a lot of spinoffs of younger architects and architects just retiring that have really helped define the aesthetics and architecture of the Sonoran Desert, [all of them] inspired by, first, organic architecture, which is Frank Lloyd Wright, and then arcology, which is Solari.”

Wright’s influence on the architecture in the region is apparent. The last stop on my tour with Bailey is, by my request, the Chase Bank branch at the corner of 44th Street and Camelback Road, in Phoenix. As it turns out, the building and mushroomlike structures surrounding it were designed by Frank Henry, who was inspired by Wright to go into the architectural field and who later taught at Taliesin West.

“I think [the two sites] helped define the Arizona schools,” says Martin-Malikian.

Cosanti, where Soleri had his studio, is “unique in the way it was constructed,” notes Liz Martin-Malikian, CEO and executive director of the non-profit Cosanti Foundation. There is a working foundry, a ceramics studio and jewellery studio, and the offices of the foundation. “There’s a lot of activity…and [art] making, and it’s all informed by this notion of slip casting [a ceramic-forming technique], which Soleri perfected,” says Martin-Malikian.

Earlier on my trip, I had marvelled at the shapes and textures of two Soleri sites — Cosanti in Paradise Valley, and Arcosanti, halfway between Phoenix and Sedona, in the city of Cordes Junction.

“Mid-century architecture — a lot of people don’t know how amazing it is and how prevalent it is here,” says Ace Bailey, who owns Ultimate Art Cultural Tours, in Scottsdale. I’m on a private tour with Bailey, who’s driving through downtown Scottsdale, and her enthusiasm for local history and architectural sights is evident. The tour starts at Hotel Valley Ho, designed by architect Edward Varney. Originally built in 1956, the historic midcentury modern property reopened in 2005 following an extensive US$80-million renovation. “This hotel is such a fabulous example of architecture that was built for the environment,” enthuses Bailey. “That Sonoran sun is vicious. If you do just a six-inch overhang on a structure, you are helping protect the building from heat, from the effects of the sun [on] artwork and fabric and everything else.”

Ducking raindrops, I make a beeline for the Finnish-style dry sauna, which is set apart from all the cabins but just a quick walk away, on the trail. Warmed to the core, I relish a rare luxurious moment of solitude with no distractions, and silently take in views of the forest all around me. By afternoon, the weather has cleared, and we decide to hike an hour-long loop on the grounds — a total of 15 kilometres of marked trails. It’s soon apparent that we’re not strolling through your average park. I startle from the unfamiliar calls of some unidentifiable woodland creature, and lurch from a snake whipping across our path. My senses feel on high alert. If the experience here is an invitation to reconnect with nature, we do just that. It’s a concept that clearly resonates. Arcana’s cabins are booked up many months in advance, but more will soon be on the way. Snyder gives me the scoop that Arcana will soon announce its first expansion site — 30-plus cabins, on a magical (and, yes, still-secret) site in Ontario, within driving distance of Toronto. When it’s time to head back to the city bustle, I can’t say I’m ready to brave the untamed backcountry next time. But I’d happily return here to dabble, gently, in the landscape that awaits.

Note: The safety of birds is a priority at Arcana. A pattern of plus signs — anticollision window markers by Feather Friendly — adorns the cabins’ stainless steel exteriors.

OPPOSITE PAGE: Nestled amongst the trees, hiding in plain sight, is the best place to escape in Ontario — Arcana. THIS PAGE: From the natural building elements to the neutral palette, fitting into the seren surroundings is key to the entire Arcana experience. Designed for immersion, the silence speaks volumes about travel today. Photos: courtesy of Arcana. retreat, Arcana is tailor-made for stressed city dwellers in desperate need of wellness in the wild but not eager to rough it with spartan tents and camping bags. “This is an on-ramp to nature for people who live in urban environments,” Arcana co-founder Felicia Snyder explains later. “You’re coming to, more or less, surrender yourself to Arcana.” It’s a stylish entry point for those who enjoy hot showers. With a few clicks on a digital keypad, we unlock our hideaway, a 275-square-foot cabin resembling a minimalist hotel room with an interior of smooth, blond wood. It’s outfitted with everything one might require to hide out for a weekend — a snug bed, an equipped kitchenette and a bathroom with a rainforest shower. The shower is kitted out with Sangre de Fruta’s luxe botanical toiletries, the cedar-rich scent, Garden of Earthly Delights, another nod to nature. Even our compact fridge comes stashed with chef-calibre meals, including white bean cassoulet with striploin steaks ready to grill on our own outdoor fire pit. The seasonally articulated dishes are an optional add-on, offered through Arcana’s new partnership with Bruce Wine Bar (located in the town of Thornbury, northwest of Toronto), so guests need not worry about schlepping groceries (hardly a meditative way to start a weekend).

GROUP DYNAMIC

Drawing from diverse disciplines, artist collectives create impactful works that range from immersive digital environments to provocative statements on current world issues. By David Jager

TEAMLAB teamlab.art An arts collective based in Tokyo, teamLAB enlists interdisciplinary artists alongside animators and scientists to create immersive art experiences. Their current show, “Every Wall Is a Door,” is on view at the new Superblue Miami experiential art venue. In one room, visitors are engulfed in a digitally projected environment where undulating white filaments of light respond to motion.

98END NOTE

The four Austrian artists at Gelitin generate works that run the gamut from art brut to parody and savage performance. They became the stuff of legend with The B-thing, in 2000, when they replaced a window on the 91st floor of the World Trade Center with a temporary wooden balcony. A more recent Gelitin endeavour is the green monster sculpture MYX, whipping its tentacles in the courtyard of a school in Vienna.

THE PLUMB theplumb.ca In Toronto, where art-making space is at a premium, the plumb offers 2,000 square feet of it, run by 15 artists as a DIY collective. Their current show, Only Reliable Narrators , examines how storytelling mediums, such as film and video, collectively structure truth. The collective’s new lightbox installation series — “Face Not Recognized #2” — documents the challenges of using facial recognition technology. ARRAY arraystudiosbelfast.com Belfast-based Array Collective won the 2021 Turner Prize for their recreation of a sibin , an illicit Irish drinking den. Array mines the rich and fractious terrain of Northern Irish identity via costumed rallies, actions and group exhibits that address a wide range of social issues. The collective elevates under-represented voices through pointed wit and sly subversion. BERNADETTE CORPORATION bernadettecorporation.com Positioned at the juncture of fashion, performance and art, Bernadette Corporation addresses issues of globalism, the hyper-commercialization of the art world, and feminine identity. It’s run by artist co-founders and friends Bernadette Van Huy and Rita Ackermann, who have recently released In Person , a collaborative book of glossy photographs chronicling a post-pandemic girls’ night out. COOKING SECTIONS cooking-sections.com Exploring food, Alon Schwabe and Daniel Fernándes Pascual have delved into irrigation issues in Sicily and soil rights in Ukraine, but it was their show, “Salmon: A Red Herring,” that won them acclaim. Their installation detailing the grisly ecological costs of farmed salmon, was compelling enough to get all four Tate locations in Britain to change their menus.
