First Independence Bank partners with Operation HOPE for neighborhood credit score analysis to drive financial education and improvement

First Independence Bank (FIB) and Operation HOPE last week launched “a transformational partnership” with the goal of empowering people in Twin Cities and Detroit communities through financial coaching, debt counseling, financial education and awareness, and other community programs. The partnership launched with a June 7 “Hope Inside the Twin Cities” economic roundtable at the Neighborhood Development Center in St.

Smoke from more than 100 wildfires burning across Canada has been rolling into North American cities far from the flames. New York City and Detroit were both listed among the five most polluted cities in the world because of the fires on June 7, 2023. The smoke has triggered air quality alerts in several states in recent weeks.

We asked Chris Migliaccio, a toxicologist at the University of Montana who studies the impact of wildfire smoke on human health, about the health risks people can face when smoke blows in from distant wildfires.

What’s in wildfire smoke that’s a problem? When we talk about air quality, we often talk about PM2.5. That’s particulate matter 2.5 microns or smaller – small enough that it can travel deep into the lungs. Exposure to PM2.5 from smoke or other air pollution, such as vehicle emissions, can exacerbate health conditions like asthma and reduce lung function in ways that can worsen existing respiratory problems and even heart disease.

But the term PM2.5 only tells you about size, not composition – what is burning can make a significant

Why we need diverse books in schools

Ever since he was young, Marchánt Davis has always loved children’s media and the power it possesses.

Though his favorites were “Sesame Street” and “Reading Rainbow” — especially seeing himself represented on screen through LeVar Burton — he says he was “strangely” inspired by “Snow White.”

“It was always playing on TV,” says Davis, an actor, director, writer, and now author of “A Boy and His Mirror.” And it was this story that he wanted to repurpose for his own children’s book geared toward the current generation.

Thinking about the relationship kids have with their phones and what identity means, Davis wanted to create a story that spoke to people coming up in a world with Tik Tok, Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat.

Paul, and a June 9 “Hope Inside Detroit” welcome reception and fireside chat in Detroit.

“This initiative is a part of our ongoing commitment to positively impact the people and communities where we do business,” said Kenneth Kelly, chairman and CEO of First Independence Bank. “I couldn’t be more pleased to expand our partnership with Operation HOPE and provide new financial resources and education to people in the Twin

Cities and Detroit markets.”

The partnership with Operation HOPE will provide FIB with onsite financial coaches in both the Twin Cities and Detroit. It’s part of the bank’s community-based approach to financial wellness and provide additional education, insights, tools and resources that will improve people’s lives. Operation HOPE has similar partnerships with financial institutions in other markets.

“First Independence

Bank shares our passion and commitment to expand financial literacy in our communities and help consumers and businesses realize their dreams,” said John Hope Bryant, founder & CEO of Operation HOPE.

“When private institutions and community organizations work together to achieve common goals, everyone wins.”

But, mostly, Davis wrote the book hoping young Black boys would read it. Though he doesn’t believe any one thing will cure problems, he wants the book to be a step toward boys acknowledging their feelings and countering some of the toxic masculinity in the Black community.

Davis called back to what Sheryl Lee Ralph said in

her acceptance speech at the Critics Choice Awards: “When you look in the mirror, you gotta love what you see,” Davis quoted. “And so, I wrote a book in an effort to help kids look in the mirror and love what they see.” Though he hopes the book empowers young Black boys, they aren’t the sole audience Davis has in mind. “It’s a book for anybody who feels ‘other’ by the way they look, or anybody who has self-doubt,” Davis says. “It’s a book that I want kids to read and feel empowered, feel like they have agency.” The problem is that, around the country, books like Davis’ are being removed from

difference in the chemistry. In the northern Rockies, where I live, most fires are fueled by vegetation, but not all vegetation is the same. If the fire is in the wildland urban interface, manufactured fuels from homes and vehicles may also be burning, and that’s going to create its own toxic chemistry, as well. Chemists often talk about volatile organic compounds, (VOCs), carbon monoxide and PAHs, or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons produced when biomass and other matter burns having the potential to harm human health.

How does inhaling wildfire smoke harm human health?

If you have ever been around a campfire and got a blast of smoke in your face, you probably had some irritation. With exposure to wildfire smoke, you might get some irritation in the nose and throat and maybe some inflammation. If you’re healthy, your body for the most part will be able to handle it.

As with a lot of things, the dose makes the poison – almost anything can be harmful at a certain dose.

Generally, cells in the lungs called alveolar macrophages will pick up the

particulates and clear them out – at reasonable doses. It’s when the system gets overwhelmed that you can have a problem. One concern is that smoke can suppress macrophage function, altering it enough that you become more susceptible to respiratory infection. A colleague who looked at lag time in the effect of wildfire smoke exposure found an increase in influenza cases after a bad fire season. Studies in developing countries have also found increases in respiratory infections with people who are

Capoeira oo ah iska caabin hal abuur leh

Capoeira oo ah iska caabin hal abuur leh

Hordhac Saddex bilood ka hor, waxaan sameeyay xallinta sanadka cusub si aan ugu sii go’aansado mabaadi’da Capoeira ayaa i baray sidii hore. Ma aanan ogeyn in Capoeira uu ku dhufan doono hawo-mareenada

Waqooyiga Ameerika oo uu noqon doono hadalka magaalada. Chinwe

Oniah, oo ah arday deggan Oakland, California ayaa dhawaan soo saartay muuqaal qurux badan oo la yiraahdo

“Sababta Ameerikaanka Madow ee badan ay isku dayaan Capoeira”

Bandhigga Filimka San Francisco. Waan ku heshiin kari waayey. Markii aan baro dhalinyarada da’doodu u dhaxayso 5 - 12 qaabka farshaxanka waxaan ka tarjumayay sida Capoeira u bedelay nolosheyda qof dhalinyaro ah. Waxay ahayd iftiinka hagaya horumarkayga shaqsiyeed, hal-abuurnimo iyo xirfadeed. Xitaa waxaan sameeyay hees ku saabsan waxa noloshayda looga jeedo. (https:// azmeramusic.bandcamp.com/track/ know-justice-know-peace) Capoeira waa goob noo ogolaata in aan sare u qaadno awoodeena, bulshada dhexdeeda waxaa ka go’an in la dhayalsado jiritaankeena, gaar ahaan dadka Afro-faraca ah.

Asalka Capoeira, waxaa loogu dhawaaqaa Cah-poo-eh-rah, waa qaab faneedka dagaalka Afro-Brazil kaas oo maanta ah ifafaale caalami ah.

Iyadoo in ka badan 6 milyan oo xirfadleyaal ah oo la tiriyey, farsamadan ayaa lagu soo bandhigay fiidiyowyada muusiga madadaalada sida Little Wayne, taxanaha Hollywood, oo ka soo muuqday muuqaallo aan tiro lahayn sida Disney’s Rio. Waxaa laga yaabaa in mid ka mid ah ciyaaraha fiidyaha ee ugu caansan ee farsamada gacanta uu yahay Tekken, oo ay ku jiraan dagaalyahannada iyo jogadores (ciyaaryahan) Eddie iyo Christina. Marka dadka intooda badan ay arkaan Capoeira markii ugu horeysay, waxay u maleynayaan inay tahay qoob ka ciyaar.

In kasta oo Capoeira ay runtii ku lug leedahay dhaqdhaqaaqyo qurux badan oo dareere ah, qaar badani ma yaqaaniin taariikhdeeda hodanka ah iyo xorriyadda qoto dheer.

Taariikhda Capoeira Sannadkii 1888-kii, Brazil waxay ahayd waddankii ugu dambeeyay ee Ameerika ee baabi’iya addoonsiga, iyadoo ku dhawaad 400,000 oo qof la addoonsaday la keenay Mareykanka, ku dhawaad 4.9 milyan ayaa la sheegay in lagu tahriibiyay dekedaha Brazil.

Maaddaama dadka

addoonsiga ah aan loo oggolayn inay ku celceliyaan is-difaac, waxay u beddeleen dhaqdhaqaaqooda sida qoobka-ciyaarka, sidaas darteed Capoeira waxay ku dhalatay. Waxa la i baray Capoeira markii aan todobo jir ahaa, oo waxaan u arkaa inay tahay duco inaan wax baranayay, tabobarayay, iyo waxbaridda ilaa hadda. Waa kuwan saddex siyaabood oo Capoeira igu beddelay: 1. Waxa wanaajiyay xidhiidhka aan la leeyahay jidhkayga. Markii aan ahaa qof dhalinyaro ah oo leh tamar badan, oo sidoo kale goob joog u ahaa xanaaq badan iyo rabshado badan oo soo koraya, jidhkaygu wuxuu ahaa mid soo dhaweynaya isdhexgalka kasta. Waxay u baahneyd in tamartaas lagu sii daayo si wax soo saar leh, Capoeirana waxay ahayd meeshaas.

Ka imaatinka faqriga, halkaas oo si xun u isticmaalka mukhaadaraadka, guri la’aanta iyo shaqa la’aanta ay ahayd caadada, waxaan tababaray 3 saacadood maalintii, si aan u habeeyo dareenka isku dhafan ee habka la qabsiga. Natiijo ahaan, waxaan bartay sida loo qiimeeyo siinta jidhkayga wakhtiga uu u baahan yahay inuu nasto, dib u dejiyo, u fidiyo oo aan si xor ah isu muujiyo. Hadda waxaan u arkaa in ay tahay lagama maarmaan halkii aan ka ahaan lahaa waajibaad, mar walbana waxaan dareemaa fiicnaan ka dib markii aan helay dhaqdhaqaaq. Waxay i bartay inaan ku kalsoonaan karo jidhkayga si aan u ogaado sida loo dhaqaaqo, iyo sida looga jawaabo xaalad kasta oo la bixiyo. Intii aan ku jiray fasalka labaad ee Jaamacadda Southern California (USC) waxaan iska diiwaan geliyey fasalka Bortuqiisku shuruudda luuqadeyda wax yar ka dib waxaan fursad u helay inaan dibadda wax ku barto Brazil muddo hal bil ah. Si aan lacag ugu ururiyo tigidhka diyaaradda, waxaan go’aansaday in aan kelmadayda ku hadasho Capoeira, iyo March 1, 2015, waxaan sameeyay fiidiyoow kelmad lagu hadlo oo muuqaal ah oo la yiraahdo “Capoeira” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?

v=Yx9KnkbxU-c) halkaas oo aan dib u milicsaday waxa ay farsamadani iiga dhigan tahay safarkayga bogsashada. Sida aad arki doonto, Capoeira waxa ay ku lug leedahay muusiga heesaha, ikhtiraacida qalab ka samaysan silig taayirka ah iyo madeira (qoryaha kaynta) si loo sameeyo qalabka garaaca wadnaha ee loo yaqaan berimbau, iyo dhaqdhaqaaqyada dabciya, xoojiya oo xoojiya jidhka. Hal-abuurkan iyo kartida ah in aan wax ka samayno waxba waa shay muhiim ah oo aan ku baaqayay intii aan noolaa oo dhan.

Mabaadi’da la bartay si fiican ayaa loo habeeyey oo lagu baray waxa ay ahaayeen aqoon-is-weydaarsiyo CaPoetic, kuwaas oo qaabeeya Habka CapoEthic ™ ee aan hadda baro hoggaamiyeyaasha iyo ardayda da ‘kasta leh si ay u hagaajiyaan xiriirka ay la leeyihiin maskaxdooda iyo jirkooda.

Muddadii aan ku jiray kulliyadda, waxaanu dhammaynay in ka badan 150 aqoon-is-weydaarsiyo gudaha iyo dibadda ah waxaana u adeegnay in ka badan 250 xubnood oo bulshada ah.

Waxaan hogaaminay aqoonis-weydaarsiyo hal-abuur leh oo CaPoetic ah ardayda gudaha iyo dibedda USC campus-ka iyo Los Angeles, Oakland, California, Salvador Bahia, Brazil iyo xitaa Bariga Jerusalem, iyo Ramallah, Falastiin.

2. Waxaan kordhiyey kalsoonida nafteyda iyo awoodda aan u leeyahay in aan dadka kale la xiriiro. Wadahadal ayaa ka jira Capoeiraisweydaarsiga tamarta kaas oo bogsiiya, muujiya oo sii qoto dheereeya xiriirka qofka la leeyahay naftiisa iyo kuwa kale. Fasalka capoeira, waxaan ku leenahay shaqo lammaane, markaa waxay ahayd inaan barto sida loo dhagaysto dadka kale.

Qayb ka mid ah dhaqanku waxay u baahan tahay inaad lammaane iska dhigto oo aad isha la yeelato qofka aad la ciyaarayso. Markay laad idinku soo tuuraan waa inaad ku jawaabtaan baxsasho ama laad kale, oo sidaas ayaad midba midka kale u hadlaysaa adiga oo aan waxba odhan. Waxaan bartay sida loo akhriyo luqadda jidhka waxaanan sidoo kale ogaaday in mararka qaarkood wadahadalka u dhexeeya laba jidh uu xitaa ka awood badnaan karo wada hadalka afka ah.

Tamartu way hadlaysaa, waxaana muhiim ah in lagu dhaqmo isedbinta halkii aad ka falcelin lahayd. Haddii qof si lama filaan ah

wejiga kaaga dhufto, ma waayi kartid degenaanshahaaga ama haddii kale loo arko qaan-gaarnimo iyo edeb hooseeya. Jawaabtaada waxay u baahan tahay in la hagaajiyo iyadoo la ilaalinayo wajigaaga markaad ciyaareyso. Had iyo jeer waxaa jira meel loogu talagalay koritaanka. Filimka aan jeclahay ee soo koraya wuxuu ahaa Kaliya The Strong, ma aha oo kaliya sababtoo ah dhawaaqa dhawaaqu waa faleebo muusigga Capoeira Hip Hop. Filimku wuxuu muujinayaa sida qaabkan farshaxanka, marka si dhab ah loo qaato, uu u bedeli karo nolosha.

Luis, oo hore uga soo qalin jabiyay dugsiga sare ee Lincoln, ayaa ku soo laabtay Miami oo ka soo baxay hawshiisii milatari ee Brazil isaga oo raadinaya fursado shaqo oo cusub; waxa uu soo booqdaa macalinkiisa fasalka 11aad ee cilmiga bulshada kaas oo ay dhacdo in uu baahi weyn u qabo in laga caawiyo soo jiidashada dareenka ardaydiisa. Waxa uu ku martiqaaday Luis inuu baro Capoeira laba iyo toban dhalinyaro ah oo ku lug leh nidaamka kuwaas oo ah “hoosta foosto” ee Lincoln.

Luis waxa uu la kulmay iska caabin kaga yimi ardayda, maamulayaasha dugsiga iyo xubnaha bulshada, laakiin adkaysi iyo aragti wuu ka adkaaday.

Waxa uu qaataa qaar ka mid ah dhalinyarada ugu “dhaqan xun” wuxuuna siinayaa qalab lagu maareeyo cadhada, xalinta khilaafaadka, iyo xidhiidhada caafimaadka qaba taas oo ka dhigaysa xitaa xubnaha baandada ee iska soo horjeeda inay diyaar u yihiin inay wada shaqeeyaan, iyo ugu dambeyntii, sameeyaan waxaan qofna rumaysan inay suurtagal tahay - qalin jabinta dugsiga sare. Waan la dhacay filimka sababtoo ah in kasta oo aanan waligey ku lug lahayn koox burcad ah ama aan la xidhin, waxaan la halgamay xanaaqa koray.

3. Waxay igu xidhidhisay jaaliyad caalami ah oo Afro-diasporic ah oo ka bilaabatay Brazil. Horraantii 20kii waxa aan bilaabay in aan ka shaqeeyo dhaawacyada caruurnimada ee kakan markii aan go’aansaday in aan naftayda dib ugu celiyo qaabka farshaxanka Capoeira. Waxay i siisay bulshada iyo meel wanaagsan oo aan u baahanahay inaan ku bogsado siyaabo caafimaad leh.

Waqtigaas waxaan ku tababaray macalinka Afro-Faransiiska, Saracuru, anigoo sii maraya Capoeira Brasil Downtown LA, dugsi casri ah oo leh kooxo ka badan 6 wadan. Waxaan bilaabay inaan arko saameynta caalamiga ah ee Capoeira ay ku leedahay dadka waaweyn ee qaybaha kala duwan. Waxaan la kulmay dadyoowga madadaalada, waxbarashada, muusikada, kuwa aan faa’iido doonka ahayn, la-talinta gaarka ah, dawladda dhammaan kuwa tababaray Capoeira. Waxaan waydiiyay waxa u keenay fanka, tirooyin aan la soo koobi karayn ayaa sheegay in Capoeira ay siisay noloshooda macno badan, oo ay ka caawisay inay helaan waddo wanaagsan. Qaar waxay u ahayd bulshada kuwa soo jiidatay, qaarna waxay u ahayd layliga iyo madadaalada, kuwa kalena waxay u ahayd xidhiidh ruuxi ah.

Qof kastaa wuxuu lahaa sabab kale, laakiin dhammaan waxay lahaayeen aasaas isku mid ah; Capoeira iyaga bedelay. Waxay i xasuusisay safarkaygii. Markii aan booqday Brazil, waxa iga sii fogaaday waa in aan la kulmay, tababaray oo aan ka bartay

Capoeiristas feminist Black. Waxaa jiray haween ku tababaranayay oo wax ku biirinayay Capoeira ilaa iyo inta Capoeira ay jirtay, laakiin dukumentiyada iyo taariikhda mar walba taas kuuma muujin doonto. Markii aan buuxinayay deeqda Fanka ee Hal-abuurka iyo Waxqabadka Fulbright ee Salvador Bahia, Brazil (Fulbright) ee 2017, markii ugu horreysay waxaan la kulmay dumarka madow Capoeiristas kuwaas oo sidoo kale ahaa macalimiin jaamacadeed. Waxaan wax ku bartay

Mestra Janja iyo Mestra Paula Barreto, aasaasayaasha Machadka Nzingha ee

Daraasaadka Capoeira Angola (http:// nzinga.org.br) iyo macalimiin ka ah waaxda Cor da Bahia ee UFBA, Jaamacadda Federaalka ee Bahia.

Waxay ahayd indho fur iyo

noloshu mid xaqiijinaysa. Waa inaan aado ilaa Brazil si aan u barto aragtida Kimberly Crenshaw ee isgoysyada, taas oo ah waxa aan ku akhrino fasalka

Mestra Paula. Helitaanka inaad ku aragto

Capoeira iyada oo loo marayo muraayad dhedig madow ah markii ugu horeysay, waxay u beddeshay xiriirkayga farsamada. Su’aal aan wakhti lahayn ayaa ka soo baxday safarkaasCapoeira ma beddelaysaa caadooyinka bulshada, mise waxay ka tarjumaysaa oo kaliya caadooyinka bulshada ee jira? Wali ma garanayo jawaabta su’aashaas, laakiin waxaan arkay inay beddeshay fahamkayga awoodda. Waxaan arkaa haweenku inay sii wadaan inay iftiimiyaan waddada mustaqbalka bogsashada iyo caddaaladda, iyagoo doonaya inay wax ka qabtaan noocyada jinsiga, cunsuriyadda, iyo kala-soocidda ee kala qaybisa adduunkeena, halkii ay ka keeni lahaayeen isbeddel wanaagsan. Capoeira oo uu hoggaamiyo Black Feminist, haweenku waxay heleen fursad ay ku ciyaaraan berimbau, oo ay ka kooban yihiin inta badan bateria (Band), oo ay ku heesaan heeso xakameynaya xawaaraha ciyaarta iyada oo aan la carqaladayn ama kala goynin aabbanimada waxyeellada leh. Marka laga soo tago dhiirigelinta kaliya, Capoeiristas-ka dumarka madow waxay si firfircoon u abuuraan adduunyo cusub. Kuwa aan si ba’an ugu baahanahayadduun ay ka buuxaan korin, nafaqo, jilicsanaan, danqasho, iyo rabitaanka in lagu xisaabtamo murugada lagama maarmaanka u ah in la bogsiiyo. Waxaan la kulmay dumarka madowga ah ee ka socda Maraykanka sida quruxda badan ee Treneil, Miriam, oo soo abaabushay xafladii awoodsiinta haweenka ee sanadlaha ahayd ee ugu horeysay 2019 ee Atlanta, Georgia. Xarunta Xoreynta Gargaarka Mutual, waxaan goob joog ka ahaa meel qurux badan, jilicsan oo xurmo leh oo lagu beeray dhammaan dadka, yar iyo weyn, ragga iyo dumarka Capoeira si ay u yimaadaan sida ay yihiin, u ciyaara, qoob ka ciyaar, heeso, iyo oohin lagu hayo beeyo sax ah. ka qaybgalka bulshada, sida Dr. Irma u magacaabi lahaa. Hoggaaminta haweenka madow ee Capoeira waxay iga caawisay inaan arko sida ay haweenku run ahaantii u awood badan yihiin, markaan awoodno nafteena oo aan abuurno meelo geesino ah oo aan si fudud u ahaan karno. Dhacdadani waxay i xasuusisay in marka haweenku joogaan oo la taageero, adduunyo isbeddel wanaagsan la sameeyo. Dumarku waxay arkaan waxa inta badan aan la arki karin, sababtoo ah waxaan ku qasbanahay inaan ku noolnahay meel bannaan oo u dhaxaysa. Waxaan rajeynayaa inaan wax badan oo ku saabsan shaqadooda la wadaago qaybo soo socda.

Capoeira Maanta: Maanta, Brazil waxay

leedahay dadka ugu badan ee ka soo jeeda Afrika marka laga reebo Afrika. Marka loo eego Hagaha Adduunka ee dadka laga tirada badan yahay iyo dadka asaliga ah ee Brazil, in ka badan 48% dadku waxay leeyihiin awow Afrikaan ah.

Dunida xirfadleyaashu way sii korayaan, mar walbana way isbeddelaan marka qaabka farshaxanku sii socdo inuu horumariyo. Si la mid ah waxyaabaha kale ee dhaqanka Madow, muddo ka dib Capoeira waxaa loo qoondeeyey siyaabo kala duwan, laakiin waxa ay ahayd wax lagu farxo in la arko sida dadka madow, gaar ahaan dumarka madow ka dhigay farsamada ay iyagu leeyihiin.

Hababka aasaasiga ah ee lagu dhaqmo waxaa loo tixgeliyaa

Capoeira Angola (dhaqdhaqaaq tartiib tartiib ah), Goboleed (dhakhso badan, dhaqdhaqaaqyo acrobatic badan) iyo Contemporanea.

Mestre (master of Capoeira) waa mid leh waayo-aragnimo heer khabiir ah, muujiyay sida ay uga go’an tahay bulshadooda oo sii haya ixtiraam joogto ah ee hiddaha dhaqameed ee farsamadan muqadaska ah.

Waxay ka shaqeeyaan sidii ay u ilaalin lahaayeen taariikhda Capoeira iyaga oo u maraya waxbarashadooda, oo inta badan ku qotonta sheeko-hadal, waxayna sidoo kale si firfircoon kor ugu qaadaan bulshada iyada oo loo marayo mashaariicda isbeddelka bulshada. Securing the place of the Negro leagues in baseball history — One voice, one mission

The families of Negro League baseball players are calling for a national day of recognition and attention for the Negro Leagues, the Black ballplayers who were excluded because of race from Major League Baseball teams. The descendants have come together to form the Negro Leagues Family Alliance (NLFA), established in February.

NLFA is calling on Major League Baseball (MLB) to establish May 2 as annual “Negro League Day” in all 30 Major League Baseball parks across the nation, marking the day the first Negro League game was played. The contest that spring day pitted the Indianapolis ABCs and the Chicago Giants against each other.

The family members that makeup NLFA represent ten Negro League players: Dennis Biddle, Bill Foster, Rube Foster, Josh Gibson, Pete Hill, Buck Leonard, Fran Matthews, Ted “Double Duty” Radcliffe, Norman Thomas

“Turkey” Stearnes and Ron “Schoolboy” Teasley, who is 96 years old. Teasley was drafted by Major League Baseball’s Brooklyn Dodgers in 1948 after playing for the New York Cubans of the Negro League. His daughter, Lydia Teasley, is a member of NLFA.

Another member of the group is Sean Gibson, great-grandson of Josh Gibson, who lived from Dec. 21, 1911 to Jan. 20, 1947. Gibson was a phenomenal catcher, whose career was primarily in the Negro Leagues. Gibson is considered among the best power hitters and catchers in baseball history. In 1972, he became just the second Negro League player to be inducted in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. The alliance’s reasons for organizing are “to preserve the legacy of the Negro League and help grow the game in America’s inner-cities.”

Vanessa Rose, granddaughter of Turkey Stearnes, who played outfield for several Negro League teams (starting with the

Nashville Giants in 1920

and ending with the Chicago American Giants in 1938) is quoted as saying, “we aim to provide resources, education and opportunities to create a unified community through the beautiful game of baseball.

“Our distinct personal connections to the Negro Leagues allow us to offer a voice rooted in ancestry that will inspire others to strive to achieve and maximize their potential,” she said of the Family Alliance’s mission, a goal of wrapping education, advocacy and inspiration in a long-ignored history lesson.

Additional initiatives from the alliance are to set up a website of historical information on the Negro Leagues and to participate in the Reviving Baseball in the Inner City (RBI) program.

A side story, according to Bill Ladson of Major League Baseball: “The date was July 25, 1966. [Ted] Williams [of the Boston Red Sox] entered the Hall of Fame. That day [he was inducted] and made a speech that still resonates

around the baseball world. He used his induction speech as an opportunity to speak on behalf of Negro League players. He felt that stars like Satchel Paige and Josh Gibson had largely been overlooked and should be in Cooperstown. Williams knew about their talents, as he competed against Negro Leaguers during barnstorming games starting in the early ’40s, when Major League Baseball was still segregated.

“I hope that someday, the names of Satchel Paige and Josh Gibson can … be added to the symbol of the great Negro League players that are not here only because they were not given a chance,” Williams told the crowd that day.

Finally, a new book has just been released with an intriguing title, “Pete Hill: Black Baseball’s First Superstar,” by Bob Luke. It comes highly recommended by Hill’s great-nephew, Ron Hill. He has written on the book’s back cover liner notes, “A forgotten ball player comes to life in Bob Luke’s book.” Hill started playing

East Team, 1948 Negro league East–West All-Star Game, Comiskey Park, Chicago, Illinois. Back row: Lester Lockett, Monte Irvin, Rufus Lewis, Henry Miller, Luke Easter, Robert Griffith, Pat Scantlebury, Wilmer Fields, Bill Cash, Vic Harris and manager Jose Fernandez. Front row: Buck Leonard, Bob Harvey, Marvin Barker, Frank Austin, Pee Wee Buts, Minnie Minoso, Luis Marquez, Louis Louden, Bob Romby, Junior Gilliam.

at 17 and had a baseball career as an outfielder and manager that spanned 1889 to 1920. I strongly recommend the book.

The NLFA reports there were 130 Negro League teams, 3,500 players and of them, 50 players are still alive. Fans should call, write and nag owners of Major League Baseball parks in their area to set up Negro League Baseball Day

every May 2, starting in 2023. The players changed America–we owe it to them to remember that. For further information about the Negro Leagues Family Alliance, contact Sean L. Christians love to ignore the separation of church and state

It’s June, which means that across America, it’s Gay Pride Month! Due to the culture wars that began in earnest with Republican Pat Buchanan in the 1990’s, and only worsened with the rise of former President Donald Trump’s bigoted MAGA movement and his acolyte turned adversary, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, hardly a day goes by when some member of the LGBTQ community isn’t attacked—or some Fortune 500 company, like Budweiser, Disney, and Target, is targeted by self-proclaimed “Christian soldiers” marching off to war.

To begin today’s Hobbservations, in my humble estimation, many of Western Civilization’s historical miseries occurred because one group’s religious practices compelled the belief that their god ordained them with all authority to regulate the lands, lives, livelihoods, and love interests of another group.

Consider: When one thinks about the historical subjugation

of women, one needs to look no further than the religious roots of Western Civilization. Whether it was women being deemed the property of their fathers and husbands in the Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions, or, women being iced out from employment opportunities (including as faith leaders); women being unable to vote or serve on juries, or, women being unable to obtain credit cards well into the 1970’s, many of the lawmakers who made such rules par for the course did so because they believed that the Torah, Bible, or Qur’an fully instructed on the role of women— which was to be subservient in almost every way to men.

When we think about the bloody Crusades during the Middle Ages, hundreds of thousands of Christians and Muslims died all because the Papists in Europe believed that the “Holy Land,” lands that encompassed Jerusalem in Palestine, belonged to them and not to the Islamic and Arabic peoples who inhabited the area during that time span.

When one thinks about the rise of Zionism in the 19th Century, and the implementation of a new Israel carved out of Muslim Palestine following World War II, one must acknowledge that the subsequent decades of fighting

When one thinks of “Christian” Europe’s colonial conquests in Africa, one must acknowledge that the purported desire to “baptize” Black people that they deemed “savages” due to their Islamic or traditional faiths, was really an excuse to rape and pillage the land for its material resources such as gold, diamonds, ivory, and later oil— all the while kidnapping tens of millions of Black people to enslave in the “New World” in the Western Hemisphere.

And speaking of that “New World,” when one thinks of the Christian colonizers and their purported “Manifest Destiny,” their theory that God the Father, Son, and Holy spirit wanted his European children to forcibly take all of the lands from the Atlantic to the Pacific from the indigenous people who had been their for millennia earlier, one must acknowledge that the genocide of those people—and the multiple trails of tears left en route to small reservations— was done because some socalled Christians swore that God almighty told them to do so!

Plus, when students find books they’re interested in, they read more, and it creates conversation and opens up topics for discussion.

My faith and academic training are the reasons why, in all humility, I realize that Christians should never throw stones at other religions and their purported atrocities, because our so-called Brothers and Sisters in the faith, from time immemorial, have been blood thirsty and oft times, pure evil!

Such is why I refuse to join in with the modern day Christian purveyors of evil, those who talk Jesus with their mouths, but are hot for Satan in their hearts! The ones that oppose abortion on one hand, but applaud police officers who kill unarmed citizens of color!

In its “Banned in the USA” report, PEN America collected book bans in states around the country between July 1, 2021, and June 30, 2022.

The analysis found that bans occurred in 138 school districts across 32 states, and these districts represent 5,049 schools with a combined enrollment of nearly 4 million students.

You see, my faith and my academic training have taught me, more than anything else, to be careful about assigning MY personal values upon the next person or group of people. I do so because in all of my personal talks and meditations with God, He has only told me to love my fellow human beings—not judge, condemn, or cast anyone else aside based upon some arrogant belief that I am the arbiter of His beliefs and justice on Earth.

saw less than 50, some states racked up over 100, with Texas topping the list at 801 bans. But it’s not just about history books. For Black and Brown kids, it’s about seeing yourself represented in history, in a book, but also in the daily experiences that children face.

“We want our kids — and we want every kid — to be able to see the experiences of Black children in the books that they read because it makes every person more relatable,” says Derrick Ramsey, co-founder of the nonprofit Young, Black & Lit. “If you can see that person, a Black student, doing a science project through a book, then that’s exciting to any student who wants to get into science.” Davis says there’s more power in variety than singularity because there is so much more to learn.

“It’s a very dangerous act to not allow children and people the experience of reading a variety of different texts because that’s what informs us about the world. That’s what helps us build our ideas and thoughts around what we believe,” Davis says. “If we are showing kids a singular thing, then I think we’re alienating them and we’re manipulating them.”

The Message a Book Ban Sends Banning these books sends a message — both to Black students and their nonBlack peers.

“It sends a message to Black students that their history doesn’t matter, that it’s not important,” Lester says. “Then, for white students, that it’s not important for them to learn about it or that their history is more important — which are not good messages to be sent.”

And their non-Black peers are also harmed because they end up learning a lopsided view of history that ignores huge swaths of the American narrative, Richmond says.

“They won’t have the opportunity to really grapple with our shared past,” Richmond says, “to read primary sources, to ask probing questions, and to engage in thoughtful discussion and build empathy.

Acknowledging past harm and our current inequitable society is the first step in creating real, long-term, sustainable change.” Of the banned books studied by PEN America, they were most likely to have BOOKS 7

LGBTQ+ content (41%) or characters of color (40%). Among the top reasons for book bans were titles having to do with race or racism (21%), and titles with themes of rights or activism (10%). When thinking about these book bans, Davis thinks there are some important questions to ask those doing the banning: What do you

want? What do you want Black children to feel by removing those books? What does removing them actually do?

“I’m just like, ‘Why?’” Davis says. “What’s your intention? What are you saying to the kids about that book, specifically?”

For Ramsey, the message is clear: “Your history doesn’t matter. Your experiences don’t matter. Who you are doesn’t matter.” It’s a challenging space for a child who is already trying to find their path in the country and in the world.

Plus, it’s not just

talking about Black history or Asian history, Ramsey says, it’s American history. “Education should be the space where you can learn about everything and anything that you want. There should be no limits to the creativity of the ideas and the dreams that you inspire into every child,” Ramsey says. “This really takes away a lot of that opportunity to see what you could be, even if you hadn’t thought about it before.”

Pride: I’m So (Not) Over You

wounds over a breakup with his boyfriend, aspiring psychologist Hudson Rivers.

I’M SO (NOT) OVER YOU

By Kosoko Jackson

Yes, I own it; I enjoy a good romantic comedy. One of my all-time favorites is the movie Think Like a Man; I can watch it over and over again. Hence, when I was searching for a book to review for Pride Month, I came across one that combines Black Love, SGL (same-gender love), and comedy: Kosoko Jackson’s I’m

So (Not) Over You. Kian Andrews is a 23-year-old college graduate and journalist from middleclass roots in North Carolina. He is currently living in Boston, seeking employment in his field but not finding it. He’s smart, with the curiosity of a journalist and usually able to read people. At the same time, he can be neurotic and secondguessing himself in true dramaqueen fashion. At this point in time, he has been licking his

Unexpectedly, Hudson approaches Kian with a proposition. Coming from a Black family in Atlanta with deep pockets of old money, Hudson wants a huge favor: to have Kian meet his parents (who have never met Kian) and pretend they are still together, which morphs into attendance at his cousin’s posh wedding.

In return, Hudson will connect Kian with a bigwig in the journalism field that he knows. Simple transaction? Yeah, right. Unresolved feelings for your ex? Check. Potential to have this scheme blow up in your face?

Well… Told via the firstperson narrative of Kian, Jackson has done an excellent job in combining the romance tropes of second-chance, fishout-of-water, and opposites (socioeconomically) attract, which he overlays with the humor, comedy, and pathos I expect in a rom-com. The fact that the main characters are two brothas is icing on the cake. I appreciated the scene between Kian and Hudson’s grandmother Johanneh, which gives the reader a poignant look into the history behind the wealth and status of the Rivers

family business. And as with all romance novels, as Kian falls in love with Hudson all over again, this one has a satisfying happilyever-after.

Hat tip to Jackson for his attention to details that point up the glaring differences between the daily lives of the uber-wealthy Riverses and those of Kian and his friends/family.

I’m So (Not) Over You is available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and his website kosokojackson.com. (author photo credit to Sara Nicole Lemon)

Heartiest thanks, Kosoko, for a welcome addition to Pride Month and your amazing literary voice. Love wins again!

cooking on open fires in homes.

The stress of an inflammatory response can also exacerbate existing health problems. Being exposed to wood smoke won’t independently cause someone to have a heart attack, but if they have underlying risk factors, such as significant plaque buildup, the added stress can increase the risk.

Researchers are also studying potential effects on the

brain and nervous system from inhaled particulate matter.

When smoke blows over long distances, does its toxicity change? We know that the chemistry of wildfire smoke changes. The longer it’s in the atmosphere, the more the chemistry will be altered by ultraviolet light, but we still have a lot to learn.

Researchers have found that there seems to be a higher level of oxidation, so oxidants and free radicals are being generated the longer smoke is in the air. The specific health effects aren’t

yet clear, but there’s some indication that more exposure leads to greater health effects.

The supposition is that more free radicals are generated the longer smoke is exposed to UV light, so there’s a greater potential for health harm. A lot of that, again, comes down to dose.

Chances are, if you’re a healthy individual, going for a bike ride or a hike in light haze won’t be a big deal, and your body will be able to recover.

If you’re doing that every day for a month in wildfire smoke, however, that raises more concerns. I’ve worked on studies with residents at Seeley Lake in Montana who were

exposed to hazardous levels of PM2.5 from wildfire smoke for 49 days in 2017. We found a decrease in lung function a year later. No one was on oxygen, but there was a significant drop. This is a relatively new area of research, and there’s still a lot we’re learning, especially with the increase in wildfire activity as the planet warms.

What precautions can people take to reduce their risk from wildfire smoke? If there is smoke in the air, you want to decrease your exposure.

Can you completely

avoid the smoke? Not unless you’re in a hermetically sealed home. The PM levels aren’t much different indoors and out unless you have a really good HVAC system, such as those with MERV 15 or better filters. But going inside decreases your activity, so your breathing rate is slower and the amount of smoke you’re inhaling is likely lower. We also tend to advise people that if you’re in a susceptible group, such as those with asthma, create a safe space at home and in the office with a high-level standalone air filtration system to create a space with cleaner air. Some masks can

help. It doesn’t hurt to have a high-quality N95 mask. Just wearing a cloth mask won’t do much, though. Most states have air quality monitors that can give you a sense of how bad the air quality is, so check those sites and act accordingly. Clay Target League is the largest youth clay target shooting sport program in the world. The League offers trap, skeet, sporting clays, and 5-stand leagues to secondary and post-secondary schools across the country. The League is the only 100% school-approved clay target shooting sport program in America and the League’s co-ed and adaptive nature are key attractions to schools nationwide. The League is fully Title IX compliant with both male and female athletes competing on the same team. Additionally, it’s an ‘adaptive’ sport, which allows students with physical disabilities to take part. The League’s priorities are safety, fun, and marksmanship – in that order. The League is the safest sport in school, with not one reported injury since the inception of the League in 2001. Each athlete must complete firearm safety certification before participation.
