In memory of Medgar Evers
By Chuck Hobbs
During the Civil Rights Movement, Mississippi NAACP Field Secretary Medgar Evers was widely considered”Public Enemy #1” for the Ku Klux Klan and the Whites Citizens Councils that opposed his efforts to register Black Mississippi residents to vote.
Born in Decatur, Mississippi on July 2, 1925, Evers attended segregated public schools and after graduating from high school, enlisted in the United States Army where he eventually rose to the rank of sergeant
while fighting Nazi tyranny in the European Theater during World War II. Evers returned from the war and enrolled at Alcorn A&M College, which today is Alcorn State University, an HBCU in Lorman, Mississippi. During his senior year of college, Evers applied for a seat in the entering class of the University of Mississippi School of Law—but was denied admission. Undaunted, he began selling life insurance and was named the Field Secretary for the NAACP in 1954.
One of Evers’s first major acts was investigating the brutal lynching of Emmett Till, the 14-year old Chicago boy whose gruesome death for the alleged offense of being “uppity” towards a white woman became an international cause celebre. While Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam (below) were charged with Till’s death, they
were acquitted in less than an hour by an all white male jury.
Following the Bryant/ Milam acquittals, Evers shifted his focus to voter registration and legal integration. In the 1950′s, the overwhelming majority of Mississippi’s counties were Black but due to Jim Crow, the state maintained
Protect Minneapolis: Say No to expanding the slot and perimeter rule at DCA
By Lawrence Wright Guest Commentary
As a Minneapolis resident, I’m concerned about the proposed expansion of the slot and perimeter rule at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA). As it stands, this rule limits daily flights and their distance at DCA, maintaining fairness and connectivity across the nation, including at Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP). However, through the Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Act of 2023, some lawmakers want to change this rule for their benefit by creating additional direct flights that would undermine this system and take away from current flights, jeopardizing our city’s interests and the state’s commerce.
In 1966, the slot and perimeter rule was established to address concerns about capacity constraints, safety, and noise pollution out of DCA.
By limiting the number of flights and restricting nonstop destinations to within 1,250 miles, it sought to strike a balance between protecting the communities surrounding DCA, efficient air travel, and equal access to Washington D.C. It ensured that the nation’s capital
was accessible and able to serve the number of inbound and outbound flights daily.
Over time, this balance at DCA has successfully prevented local bottlenecks and nationwide travel disruptions while ensuring a level playing field across the country. It has also fostered healthy competition and facilitated commerce opportunities for cities like Minneapolis by prioritizing access to DCA for many major cities across the country. Through this, MSP has been able to develop into the renowned travel hub it is today. However, expanding the slot and perimeter rule could have detrimental effects on the city’s flight options, which could impede our city’s national and international connectivity. Prioritizing an increase of flights to other cities while decreasing the number of flights through MSP would negatively impact Minneapolis’s business and tourism sectors. This could lead to a significant blow to the nearly $16 billion in annual economic output generated by MSP. A potential decrease in commerce would slow down our state’s economic growth and diminish the city’s standing as a vibrant and thriving metropolis. Moreover, by
an apartheid political climate in which only five percent of voting age Blacks were registered and in most elections, fewer than one percent actually cast ballots.
In 1962, Evers took a second crack at the University of Mississippi, this time

NIL – The Game Changer
have greatly capitalized on this opportunity.
By Leahjean M. Denley, MBA
As college sports continue to evolve, the topic of name, image, and likeness [NIL] has become increasingly important. For decades, in addition to seeking financial compensation for their sweat equity, collegiate scholar-athletes have been fighting for the right to use their own name, image, and likeness. July 1, 2021, was a historic day for the lives of scholar-athletes competing in National Collegiate Athletic Association [NCAA] intercollegiate athletics. For the first time, scholar-athletes would have limitless opportunities to receive compensation for the use of their NIL for endorsements through traditional and social media, appearances, entrepreneurial activities, inkind deals, autographs and more, in accordance with NCAA guidelines. Many of the current top stars in college revenue and non-revenue sports
From the college coaches perspective, NIL is a hot topic that could simultaneously have positive and negative implications. High-major schools with larger budgets and well-established athletic programs see NIL as a major benefit that can help them attract top recruits and remain competitive. For the most part, coaches of these institutions believe that athletes should be able to capitalize on their own brand and make money from their persona as well as their success.
On the other hand, mid-major and low-major programs have concerns about what this could mean for the future of their programs. While most coaches are glad to see players compensated for their time and dedication to their craft, they are also worried that their programs will not be able to attract higher ranked or skilled recruits or retain players on their rosters to compete with high-major programs that have more resources.

Although we are seeing more parity as of late in the higher revenue Division 1 sports of football, men’s basketball, and
women’s basketball, due to the differences in facilities and the ability to offer opportunities for more lucrative deals to athletes, NIL could lead to an even wider gap between the haves and have-nots in college athletics. From the college and university perspective, some institutions have created programs and even positions within their athletic departments to manage the impact of NIL. Almost simultaneously as the NCAA was adopting and implementing NIL guidelines, as a proactive

Hapa kuna njia tatu ambazo
Capoeira alinibadilisha:
Ilinikumbusha safari yangu mwenyewe.

Par Azmera Hammouri-Davis Translation by M. Anwanyu, Lagos, Nigeria French Text
L’ Introduction
Cela m’a rappelé mon propre voyage.

Both the first and second level have near perfect lighting, setting a wonderful tone. Still, the second floor is much more alluring with its decor, and traditional low table, close to ground level seating.
It was a beautiful day out Tuesday, so I decided to check out the rooftop patio. Great views of downtown Minneapolis and Lyndale and Lake Street.
I was seated, and from there the good times kept rolling in.

The bartender from the first level, brought me up to speed on the multiple options of sake they offer. Their flights let you sample different sake expressions. And they even have sake cocktails.
Personally I’m a warm sake guy, and their sake was just what the doctor ordered. The drink slinger also recommended the crispy chicken bun, and what a recommendation it was! The Sriracha Hot Sauce mixed with the creamy avocado sauce. A perfectly balanced bun

The tuna bun, pickled sprouts, the delicious avocado sauce, and well-seasoned and seared ahi tuna, quite the treat. For some reason the bun from the tuna was not as sticky as the bun that came with the crispy chicken…. Must be a bun phenomenon.

in his drive-way as his wife, Myrlie, and children awaited his arrival on June 12, 1963—60 years ago today! In what would become an interesting historical coincidence, Evers returned to his home that fateful night only hours after President Kennedy had delivered a televised speech in which he addressed Ku Klux Klan violence against Dr. Martin Luther King and the SCLC in Birmingham, Alabama. As typical in the South during this era, Byron De La Beckwith was charged with murdering Evers—but was twice acquitted of the charge. In one of the uglier moments of Southern jurisprudence, Governor Barnett attended the first trial in 1964 and as Mrs. Myrlie Evers testified before the all white jury, he stopped and shook De La Beckwith’s hand for all to see; De La Beckwith would later be convicted in 1994 and spent the remainder of his miserable life in prison. overhauling meaningful legislation and creating entirely new routes for a select group of legislators who prefer direct flights, the expansion of the slot and perimeter rule would establish an unjust advantage for a few, while subverting the principles of fairness and equality that our country values. Instead, we should uphold our commitment to accountability and fairness while providing equal opportunities to connect with the nation’s capital. We should oppose the proposed expansion to safeguard the interests of our city and implore our elected officials to prioritize fairness and equal opportunities, rather than bowing down to the demands of a few lawmakers. Expanding the slot and perimeter rule would not only harm the economies of Minneapolis and our beloved state, but it would also establish an alarming precedent that could undermine fair practices in the future.

AT THE DEEP END
By Deja Elise
There are those times when one’s life is at a crossroads, where something that’s been comfortable for so long is simply not working. There comes a time when carpe diem is appropriate. Sometimes, what we want shows up in a different package than we expect. Such is the case with my next review for Pride Month, Deja Elise’s novel
At the Deep End.
30- year-old Abrianna (Bri) Davis is a high-powered attorney from Chicago. A hopeless romantic, Bri wants the total package of marriage and children. Having been strung along by her boyfriend Quinton for years with no hope of a marriage proposal in sight, she breaks up with him. With her married BFFs/law school alums Charisse, Kayla, and Sunny, they take off for a winter holiday in Miami. With sisterhood support, Bri is healing and ready to have a good time on the shores on Miami Beach.
While relaxing by the pool of their vacation condo, she meets 32-year-old Dorothy Divine (DeeDee) Renier, a WNBA player for the Los Angeles Sharks who has been sidelined with a knee injury and weighing her options as an entrepreneur. In addition to her bodily injury, DeeDee has suffered a breakup with her ex-girlfriend Tori.
Their chemistry is explosive, and for the bi-curious Bri, chemistry morphs into an intense, passionate, steamy affair within 48 hours. DeeDee makes her feel alive in a way
she hasn’t felt in a long time, and Bri has fallen hard and fast. But Quinton wants to reel Bri back into the same-old-same-old holding pattern. DeeDee needs closure from her ex, and she has a secret from her past. And then there’s that pesky issue of the long distance between Miami and Chicago…
This is the first installment in Elise’s At the Deep End series, and she grabs the reader right out of the starting blocks. While dealing with exes gives the story some angst, it’s moderated by a healthy dose of humor and camaraderie, especially between Bri and her BFFs. Overall, they

I appreciated Bri for recognizing when it was time to cut her losses and move on; like that saying goes, “What one man won’t do, another man will.” Of course, in this case it was another woman, and I look forward to reading more of Bri and DeeDee’s budding relationship.
At The Deep End is available through Amazon and Barnes and Noble.
Thank you, Deja, for bringing a fun read and more Black Love to Pride Month. Hat tip to sisterhood and carpe diem!
