BIOMETRIC COMPANIES YOUR ONE-STOP SOLUTION TO ALL SECURITY CONCERNS

ecurity has been one of the major concerns in recent times. Security assurance continuously haunts individuals, organisations, and governments. Despite efforts by all these entities to secure their access control mechanisms, security breaches are rampant. Security is the biggest concern even for access control system manufacturers. Technological advancements have made our personal and work lives easier, but these have also brought many security issues. As a solution, techno-geeks came up with biometrics. Biometrics came into being with the emergence of computer technology, albeit slowly. That was in the 1990s. By 2000, biometrics became a part of everyday applications. From fingerprint sensors on your mobile phones, data security systems, fingerprint cards, face recognition, blue tooth, QR Codes, and what-not, biometrics is upheld as the most effective security system in public and private. When discrepancies were noted in manual tasks like daily attendance register, documents, and other routine work, identity card punching came into being. But security breaches and proxy punching issues began coming up, making the job more challenging for security solution providers. As they say, necessity is the mother of all inventions – security solution companies began to look for more powerful

technologies and systems to shield data and protect individuals, companies, and governments. And these are not just restricted to attendance or entry-gates. Every sector today predominantly uses biometrics for security. The most reliable security option now is biometric security systems. These are driving the access control security industry, and rightly so, as they are endeavouring to bring in more transparency. Biometrics are convenient and are known for accurate validation of personnel. Biometric authentication includes facial and iris recognition, fingerprint scans, vascular pattern recognition, biometric access terminals, CCTV surveillance, fire alarm detection, and suppression, building management systems, intrusion security, time/attendance systems, telecom, and other industrial solutions. It also recognises heartbeat, iris, face, vein, voice, and other factors with various biometric devices. Biometrics is the most effective tool in human resource (HR) management. Security solutions have come a long way and are still counting the miles to go. Who had ever imagined that one could unlock mobile phones with a fingerprint, click selfie photographs with hand gestures, swipe cards for transactions, and whatnot little things in personal and work life! But it is

happening, and the techno-geeks are simply unstoppable when it comes to innovations. The COVID-19 pandemic only accelerated the need and demand for biometrics. Well, we don’t have a shortage of technocrats who are over-working their grey cells, even as this edition goes for print. We chose a few biometric companies that went above and beyond to innovate gadgets and systems that were unimaginable some decades ago or were just a part of Sci-fi films. Read their exciting journey in our latest edition of Insights Success, Best of Five Biometric Companies in India. Also, please do read the interesting articles curated by our in-house writers. ecurity is one of the essential aspects of everyday life. It is given the utmost importance in every industrial or personal space. Keeping the data safe is the prime concern for industrialists. Likewise, keeping the home safe is the prime concern of every common man. A solution to these concerns is Biometric Security Solutions. One of the best ways to ensure security is using Biometrics solutions. As the advent of security solutions is booming, different solutions related to security are also evolving. Innovative solutions like facial recognition, fingerprint recognition, and digital mobile access card are heavily taking over the market when it comes to Biometric Security Space. One company that provides all these innovative biometric solutions is Suprema. Suprema is one of the world's top access control providers, including time and attendance management, and biometric security solutions. It offers an extensive portfolio of security devices, including biometric access control systems such as face and fingerprint recognition, mobile authentication systems, web-based access control, and HR management. With a worldwide sales network spanning over 140 countries, Suprema ranks among the top 50 security manufacturers and has the number one market share in biometric access control in the EMEA region. A Thoughtful Leader Shreyans Vasa is the Country Manager at Suprema India. He has extensive experience with a wide range of access control and security technology, including biometric devices, CCTV surveillance, fire alarm detection and suppression, building management systems, and intrusion security. He also has experience related to technology such as time/attendance systems, telecom, and other industrial solutions. He joined the Suprema India team in 2020,

Biometrics makes it virtually impossible for anyone to spoof identity and gain unauthorized access

following a decade-long career in team management. Shreyans has a Bachelor of Technology degree in Instrumentation and Control Engineering and a Mini MBA in Business Administration, Management, and Operations. Aspiring Ventures In the early 2000s, fingerprint recognition technology was the leading biometric solution. This technology requires complex algorithms for image processing, as well as custom hardware and software. Suprema had the competitiveness of the researchers fit for the task, so the company developed its fingerprint recognition algorithm. Based on this algorithm, Suprema took first place in the Asia of 2002 Fingerprint Verification Competition, and in 2004, it was ranked first in the world. Secure Services It offers a wide range of access terminals that accept every authentication option available, including RFID, PIN numbers, biometric options including facial and fingerprint recognition, and contactless mobile access using Bluetooth or QR codes. Suprema's BioStar 2 web-based security platform lets access control administrators manage every terminal and user, along with time and attendance, visitors, and more. In large and highly secured spaces, this is all backed by its CoreStation intelligent door controller, which is capable of linking multiple biometric terminals across a large area and efficiently servicing a vast number of people. Challenges – A part of Victory Suprema's first biometric access control terminal was BioStation, which was launched in 2006. There were many global innovations in the mobile phone industry during this time, including improvements in LCD screens, multimedia, WiFi communication, and more. Suprema further developed upon these new technologies and adapted them into BioStation, which revolutionized the access control industry with its color LCD display, fingerprint recognition, and more technologies, including design itself. It was a big hit! Fast-forward to 2021, and its highest-rated technology is Suprema's facial recognition and mobile access solutions. Facial recognition has had a reputation for having a 'onerace bias,' meaning that any facial recognition system would typically only be able to recognize people of the same ethnicity as its developer since that is what the AI is trained to 'see'. Suprema worked tirelessly to overcome this limitation. Now it is proud to say that its industry leading FaceStation F2 biometric terminal can recognize people of any ethnicity

There is also a growing demand for access control devices supporting multiple authentication methods

in any lighting conditions. This is a factor that has helped it to lead the biometric security solutions space in the global market. Together with face recognition, it is also looking at a big move in the mobile access area. Suprema has spun off the MOCA inc. as affiliate in 2019 to grow mobile access business, and MOCA has successfully made a quantum leap in the mobile access area. Suprema is always trying to give more valuable solutions and services to customers and facing challenges when trying to make this kind of effort work in the market. Sustaining the Pandemic Since many people no longer want to touch public access points such as door handles, RFID cards, etc., one knock on effect of the COVID-19 pandemic has been a rising interest in contactless access control. This has resulted in a plethora of new vendors entering the space to fill the demand. However, Suprema has been innovating and pioneering contactless access control for over ten years, specifically facial recognition. In this time, it has seen the market grow steadily thanks to advancements in technology, which increase accuracy and

user comfort. While the core technology itself is nothing new, Suprema believes that the pandemic has affected the public in a way that acceptance of facial recognition and other contactless access control have become much more common now. For some examples of Suprema's contactless devices, its FaceStation F2 facial recognition access control terminal is extremely fast — it can authenticate and grant access as people walk by without requiring each individual to stop and look at the camera. Suprema recently released XStation 2 and Airfob Patch, both very versatile mobile access devices that use Bluetooth and NFC technology to read digital access cards stored on a smartphone. This allows admins to send access cards in advance via email, and visitors can walk straight in — zero face-to-face contact required. Airfob Patch is also particularly easy to install — it can be attached to an existing RFID reader via an adhesive strip and requires no electrical plug or batteries.

There is also a growing demand for access control devices supporting multiple authentication methods

These are some of Suprema's contactless devices that have been selling very well during this pandemic period. There have also been significant technological advancements during the past couple of years. There are a lot of opportunities to be found in the growing sophistication of artificial intelligence and deep learning, both areas where Suprema has a core competence. Suprema believes it will become increasingly important in the future for systems to seamlessly support this kind of flexibility. Crisp Details In a world that is increasingly emphasizing both personal and corporate security, biometrics are definitely here to stay. However, if used incorrectly, such data can be used for ill purposes. New entrepreneurs need to consider how best to respect and secure the privacy and rights of those who — consensually or unwittingly — give up their biometric identifying information. Robust Future Suprema ranks first in global market share in the field of biometric readers. It believes that visual recognition technology will soon spill over into the security industry, with surveillance cameras featuring built-in AI capable of efficiently alerting people when it identifies smoke, intrusions, weapons, and other suspicious or dangerous activities. Essentially, Suprema envisions a future where access control and security are merged as one, with everything being controlled by cameras and AI. This means that Suprema will have to change its business model to take advantage of this market opportunity. Over the past 20 years, it has focused on access control and developed everything in-house. But now, it is looking to make partnerships that can help it build synergies. Suprema aims to develop its visual recognition algorithms to recognize faces and, for example, weapons, suspicious

body movements, or smoke. As this requires crossing into a technology sector, it does not yet have much experience. The right partnerships will make all the difference. Industry Insights It is a huge market. According to a recent report by Emergen Research, the Biometrics-as-a-service global market size is predicted to surpass USD 6.4 billion by 2028. This encompasses not only building security but also mobile devices, etc. Nowadays, biometric authenticated secure mobile payments have become very popular, showing how much importance people place on personal security. Still, that's just the consumers and the individuals. While looking at larger organizations such as corporations, industrial complexes, or government buildings, security is paramount, and biometrics is king. The global pandemic has also undoubtedly had an impact on the industry. However, a report by Omdia revealed that revenues from biometric reader sales declined by 6.9% from 2019 to 2020, owing to the impact of COVID-19. These numbers include fingerprint readers. This should not be surprising when the rising interest in contactless access control is considered. However, sales of contactless facial recognition readers are still going strong — a fact Suprema can attest to. Safety being the Priority Biometric authentication access terminals, of course, strengthen security systems for the companies that install them. But they also offer a range of benefits for the people that pass through these access points, including staff, management, customers, and visitors. Facial recognition, for example, has become the gold standard for contactless identity verification, which has become very important during the pandemic. Suprema's FaceStation F2 can authenticate users super quickly as they walk past — when installed at a checkpoint with touchless turnstiles, visitors can pass through very quickly with zero physical contact required. On the other hand, you have fingerprint recognition, which offers the high level of security that biometric authentication has to offer, even while people are wearing masks or are otherwise covering their faces. And for those who require very high levels of security, it is possible to store biometric information on physical RFID cards or digital mobile access cards. Meaning, you could set up an access point to require all three types of identity verification: fingerprint, facial recognition, and a swipe of an RFID or mobile access card.

ith technology entering every part of contemporary life and our environment becoming increasingly computerized, safeguarding sensitive information becomes increasingly challenging. Passwords and keys were long thought to be sufficient for data security, but they now appear to be increasingly ineffective in the face of sophisticated hacker attacks. Passwords, in reality, are the weakest link in an organization's security strategy. This is because they are shareable, and even those with high entropy may be cracked using several approaches. Recent reports of network security breaches and identity thefts reinforce the necessity for a solid authentication technique in today's world. This has shifted the emphasis to biometric security, as it is the only effective method of proving an individual's identification. Biometric features are physical and behavioral characteristics that are intrinsic and unique to each individual and include fingerprints, face, iris, stride, voice, etc. As a result,

We have seen it is as the greatest opportunity and introduced plenty of products that suits various industries for various usages

biometric security systems can verify an individual's identification with high precision and reliability since biometric qualities are ingrained in the individual. One such excellent biometric company providing several solutions for safety is Cams Biometrics. Automation Revolutionizing

Home Security Space “H

ome Sweet Home!" – That's the thought which always comes to our mind whenever we think about or simply miss our home, whenever we are away from it. And in current times another thought follows the previous thought, immediately. Is our home safe enough for our family and our loved ones? In short, we know our home is sweet, it always has been, but we want to be sure that it is safe and will remain that way, either we are staying in it, or are away from it. But how to do it? Simple. How about a self-secured, automatically safe Smart Home? Exactly. Home Automation is the key to the 'Safety and Security' lock. Thus, let's have detailed insights into the home security space from the POV of revolutionary automation. Home Automation System is an interlinked network of electronic home appliances, and electronic home security devices, controlled and monitored centrally with the help of computers. If a thief breaches into any of our modern homes, what will he look for and for that where will he go? This is the first and foremost issue around which the entire home security system space is developed. On the other hand, in a normal day-to-day routine, how we can live comfortably, peacefully, and move around the house easily, is the central point around which home convenience/safety system is developed. Now, Home Automation using internet of things (IoT) connects convenience, safety and security systems (including all of their devices) seamlessly into a whole

OCTOBER 2021 | 19 | www.insightssuccess.in

called 'User Home Interface' and gives us – the owner - its full/partial access and control. Home Convenience/Safety System: Earliest Home Automation began with the introduction of human labour-saving machines like self-sufficient gas or electric-powered home appliances. They became commonplace by 1900 because of the widening electric energy/power distribution, thus paving way for sewing machines (by 1790), water heaters (by 1889), washing machines (by 1904), refrigerators (by 1913), dishwashers (by 1917), cloth dryers (by 1937). In 1975, X10 – the first-ever home automation network technology (electronic device's communication protocol) was developed for general purposes. For signalling and control, the system uses electric power transmission cabling. The signals include short radiofrequency surges of digital data. By 1978, X10 products came equipped with a lamp module, an appliance module and a command console of 16 channels. It was followed by the first X10 timer: a wall switch module. Today, Home Convenience/Safety System may include energy- (ventilation, heating, lighting, air-conditioning) controlling and monitoring devices, labour-reducing home appliances, lifestyle and entertainment devices, life-saving home appliances, smart kitchen appliances, and so on… Home Security System: With each passing day, home security systems are evolving to provide failsafe home security solutions along with stateof-the-art features like keyless doors, remote-controlled and monitored devices etc. Starting earliest by 1853, the simple burglar/intruder alarm was electrified and popularised by Edwin Holmes, who bought the patent from Reverend Augustus Russell Pope of Somerville, Massachusetts, the original inventor of the first ever such a device. And over the last century and a half, the invention was amplified by generations of innovators and businessmen giving us today's modern home security system. And for the past few years market competition led to in-synced digital, internet-based gadgets being affordable for common people. Nowadays, we always imagine a smart home as digitally secure. But smart doesn't mean only convenience, safety and security. In the term 'smart home', the word smart refers

to the system which uses Internet of Things (IoT) and ICT or information and communication technologies, remains aware of the state of all of its devices, along with being reliable, convenient, real-time, and user-friendly. This revolution is furthered by today's tech giants who along with established market players in the home security business, are developing novel more in-synced, more up-todate, professional security devices, applications, and systems. Today's best home security systems contain quality hardware that is easy to install and maintain. The hardware includes Computer/s, I/O devices (microphones, speakers, keypads etc.), Storage Drives, Batteries, Inverters, Modems, Routers, TV-box, Wi-fi box, Touchscreen security panels, Cameras or Recording devices, Sensors (static or motion), Alarms, Switches, cables, connectors, display monitors/signs etc. The hardware may be wired or wireless depending on the make and cost. The software includes mobile apps, Computer OS, other device application software, and complete user-interface software etc. Home User Interface: It can also be called Smart Hub, Central Hub or Central Control Unit. It is the set of static or portable hardware (Computers, Smartphones, Laptops, Tabs etc.) along with the pre-installed system or/and application software. Many of these systems, devices are using the latest biometric technologies like fingerprint/face/iris/retina/palm/voice/gesture scanners/sensors/detectors, thus making the whole experience comfortable. With the advent of AI, Robotics, Machine Learning technologies, home automation and security space are getting revolutionised beyond our imagination. Soon, the day is not far and when we will think about our home, we will be sure that it's a place that is not only sweet but also smart, secure, and automatically safe. In short, the thought about our home will give us a serene feeling of not only 'Home Sweet Home' but that of 'Home Smart Home'.

The team at Radium Box understands that lack of proper knowledge regarding the new technology will boost the passion regarding the exploration of new verticals of revenue generation. Organized Offerings Radium Box began with a clear goal to educate clients on the growing importance of Aadhaar and digital signature for their identity and access management with consistent branding. Radium Box has developed a support system that considers the variety of India, its multilingual culture, and its inadequate computer skills. The organization offers yearround training and support through social media platforms, calls, remote desks, mobile applications, and so on for both residents and small businesspeople. First of all, Radium Box offers them the appropriate biometric brand or USB PKI Tokens. Then, if customers are unable to pay at once, it offers them EMI options. Finally, with a readily accessible support crew, it assists them all year round in their language. In addition, Radium Box also supplies the Unit Trust of India with the free distribution of PAN and DSC Centres – allowing its customers to start their business with zero investment – since it neither charges nor requests deposits in advance. In addition, the firm produces STQL Certified Biometric Devices of all kinds intended for Aadhar registration and authentication. In one spot, it offers all types of biometric and digital signature services. Multiple Challenges There were multiple challenges as this field was very new for India and was a risky venture to choose as there were very few samples available to learn its marketing. Also, Ravi believes the biggest challenge Radium Box as a company faced was in hiring the right talent in the very beginning. Now the current challenge is to bring in investors so that its services can become more reachable. Striving through the Pandemic Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Radium Box is confronted with issues connected to prompt delivery. Since many courier firms did not work, delivery of the merchandise to clients was problematic in time. The

company had registrations/contracts with various courier providers to tackle these difficulties. Before any shipping, the shipment possibilities were checked online from a single portal, and the products were dispatched accordingly. The location was delivered as fast as possible. In addition, remote work posed many challenges for the company. However, even before the pandemic, few of its team members worked from home; radium Box easily accepted to remain relevant and competitive in changes. There were many roles and obligations for all employees at home, and the firm guaranteed that the team members were trained with minimal resources to provide the essential expertise. In addition, the Radium Box team was able to keep up with advancements in the digital industry, such as Zoom or Google meetings. Advice to Follow "I advise that entrepreneurs must be persistent (in all aspects of their life) and enjoy the journey putting all their passion into their innovations or whatever they are doing. Results will follow," says Ravi. "As practical advice, I have always been a big fan of selftaught learning. It was the vast internet that prepared me for this challenge, in my case at least. I also believe in another powerful concept, never stop learning, and always remain curious - you can learn from everybody. You should invest in yourself and your education, especially from the main references in every field," adds Ravi. Thinking Ahead Radium Box intends to introduce eSigning software with Aadhar OTP authentication software shortly, which may be used easily by ordinary individuals to sign documents like an affidavit and wills. In addition, these tools might be valuable for legal documentation certification. The company seeks to remove false documents and to legalize the will and other documents. Industry know-how During the forecasts, the market growth is predicted to be mainly driven by significant reasons. Reasons such as expansion in the e-passport program, backed by the government, and extensive usage of criminal identification. The recent outbreak of COVID-19 is also a growing push for the biometric services sector without contact.

HOW ARE

ENSURING CUSTOMER SAFETY?

I

n today's digital world, where a consumer's daily routine is becoming an online map, where clients are more and more vulnerable to getting cheated, conned or scammed, customer safety and security is of paramount importance for most businesses, public/private institutions and service providers.

recognition in real-time but also asks for additional authentication via smartphone, allowing the drivers to make the entry/exit into their vehicles without key fobs. Further, to prevent driver fatigue and distraction, many automakers are using biometric technologies like facial recognition, eye tracking, etc.

Many of the companies and organisations are ready to invest a substantial part of their budget for the cause. Many such entities have already deployed a variety of security measures and safety mechanisms into their system.

Banking and Financial: As banking and financial services become digital, fin-techs and banks are incorporating stricter checking protocols to reduce fraud, irregularities, forgeries and increasing transactional security to enhance customer safety and service experience.

One such accurate, trusted, reliable, secure and safe mechanism is Biometrics. The word is a combination of two distinct words and concepts; Biology, which refers to Humans, and Metric, meaning measurement. Thus, the word Biometric means Measurement of Human Biology or physiology with an automated system. But it measures more than biology. It also measures a person's behavioural traits/characteristics to provide better identification and verification. Now, let's examine how biometric services are ensuring customer safety across different sectors. Automotive Sector: Biometric Gadgets like iris/retina/fingerprint scanners might become the standard security feature that will not only lock/unlock and starts a vehicle but will also probably operate it in the future. There are already ongoing developments for biometric security equipped vehicles, using a multi-factor authentication prototype that, not only uses facial

As a result, biometric tech has become a foundational paradigm of online financial portals for access/payment cards, ATMs, multi-transactional kiosks, and a strategic element of financial service security platforms. Customer preference is further driving the trend. Some banks are using voice authentication to check and verify customers' identities. Some others are allowing facial recognition for accessing mobile banking apps. For advanced security, some banks are even using finger vein reader tech instead of passwords or PINs. Using biometrics, all types of payment card frauds can be reduced. Healthcare Sector: Biometric data could allow faster patient identification and tracking in emergency situations, preventing patient fraud and mistaken prescriptions, protecting patient privacy, their health information from unauthorised access.

Get Secured

Food and Beverages Industry: Today, F&B suppliers have a global presence with staff running into thousands. In such a scenario, they could use biometric technology to monitor remotely all the employee-related allowances and permissions in accordance with levels, minimizing the cross-contamination risks, as different staff members can be permitted to access different levels, prohibiting certain production lines to certain employees. It could also prevent unauthorised entry/exit. Facial recognition technology is being used by some worldrenowned F&B chains to enhance the walk-in customer experience. Hospitality Industry: Hospitality Industry always wants to give their customer a world-class experience through personalised catering and tailor-made services. Thus, they are using Biometric techs such as facial recognition for check-ins, check-outs, favourite rooms, foods, preferred tastes, and other customer priorities. Retail Sector: For retailers, biometrics is proving to be a go-to-technology for in-house theft reduction, in-store advertisement, and on-site promotional targeting, billing/payment getaways. For e.g., security cameras can be used not only to detect shoplifters and frauds but also to track shoppers' movements, shopping engagement, ads effectiveness, brand loyalty, and so on. Border Control: Although, fingerprint scanners are the favourite of Border Custom Officials, due to their high false acceptance/rejection ratio, many countries including the US, Canada, UK, and Thailand, are looking for iris/retina and facial recognition as viable alternatives.

Law Enforcement Agencies (LEA): For LEAs biometrics is an old ally. Fingerprints and DNA matching are the two most widely used, and most reliable and popular techniques to date. Portable devices which can scan suspects fingerprints quickly and then instantly compare them to AFIS (Automated Fingerprint Identification System) are Law Enforcement officers' best buddies. Today, facial scanning and surveillance system is used city-wide, in suspects, criminal, victim, witness identification, tracking and tracing. From large-scale facial recognition of urban masses to lie-detecting (neuro-biometric) of hardened criminals/terrorists, biometric is LEAs' trusted friend. Education: Using both biometrics and AI, today's schools and universities are tightening their security to ensure student/staff safety. The combo is also being used for admissions, enrolment, granting access/permission, checking for cheating in examinations, and offering performance reports and certificates and conducting online tests and giving appropriate results. If the proposed metaverse becomes a reality, we will soon see a future where biometric services would have been evolved to unprecedented levels, where today's modernities like swiping credit cards, punching passwords, even pressing fingers on scanners or holding eyes/faces/palms to the sensors will look like outdated concepts. Even if many of us will be a little slow in embracing biometrics technology, it will embrace the future or rather is already embracing the future whole-heartedly. So, if you don't want your customers to get scammed, get secure and soon.

With their unobtrusive nature, the self-serving Auto Kiosks at airport terminals are also being used as database (of fingerprint, iris/retina, facial scans) collection points by defence departments, to identify cross-border criminals and terrorists. Also, biometrics as an identification tool could be the best replacement for lost/misplaced/falsified passports.

Simplifying Access Control Systems Dynamically

T

he biometric space is evolving speedily. The advent of the pandemic has also given it a push because of contact-free security solutions. The demand for sensorbased tech-savvy biometric security solutions is expanding with each passing day. The use of a cloud-based control platform, which allows smartphone, or access cards to unlock doors, is heavily in demand. One company that counts in giving ace level biometric services is Spintly. The company provides biometric verification solutions using two-factor authentication on the user’s smartphone. Rohin Parkar, Co-founder and CEO of Spintly, sheds some light on how the firm works and how it is finding innovative solutions to add up to the biometric service space. Following are the highlights of the interview. Please describe us about Spintly in detail. Spintly is a cloud-based access control platform that allows users to unlock doors with smartphones, wearable devices, or access cards. The current access control systems in the market use primitive technology, which was developed decades ago. Existing

systems require a massive amount of wiring and a large number of controllers. Almost 70% of the cost of access control systems goes into wiring, controllers, and labor. We have developed the world’s first fully wireless access control system, allowing access control readers to communicate with each other over a wireless mesh technology. Hence, it eliminates the need for wiring and bulky controllers. This saves the cost in terms of hardware and saves a tremendous amount of time and effort, which goes into laying down the cables and wires. Being a cloud-based system allows easy integration with other software, which your company may be using. What made you venture into the field of biometric services? The idea for Spintly was born in a building management room full of door controllers, fire alarm panels, lighting control panels, and many wires to connect all systems. The hardware was occupying an entire room in the building, and cables ran all across the building floors. I, along with Malcolm D’souza, conceptualized a controller-less and fully wireless building automation

platform. It would allow all devices like access control readers, smoke detectors, lights, etc., to communicate over a mesh network allowing these devices to make their own decisions. Thus, Spintly was developed as a unified wireless platform for building automation. We decided to focus on the physical security aspect of the buildings and made a complete end-toend solution for access control. What kind of offerings does Spintly provide to its clients? We make hardware devices like wireless smart locks, readers, and edge gateways that communicate with the Spintly cloud platforms. It brings affordable access control to every door. We also offer cloud-based software modules for access control, time and attendance, and contactless visitor management. What kind of challenges have you faced while entering the biometric services sector? The biometric services sector is crowded with manufacturers from China and Korea, and other countries. Selling hardware in an already crowded market was a challenge. Competing with these existing products on price was not worth it. So, we decided to focus on software and

Co-founder and CEO technology. We used our key differentiators, wireless mesh technology and cloud software, to enter the biometric access control space. How was Spintly affected in these pandemic times, and what were the steps you took to curb the damages while helping your clients and maintaining the safety of your employees? One of the significant challenges we faced when COVID-19 struck India was when our business got adversely affected due to the lockdown. We quickly were able to change our messaging to a contact-less system and attract customer attention. But for 2-3 months, going without revenues was a difficult phase in the business. Every start-up faces challenges of having a good cash flow so it can stay afloat towards becoming profitable. One of the other challenges we faced was the lack of a manufacturing ecosystem due to prolonged dependency on China. So, we are building an infrastructure and capability ground-up that will enable us to deliver our products in the future.

What would you like to advise the young generation of entrepreneurs and enthusiasts who want to venture into the field of biometric services? For any entrepreneurs trying to enter into the biometric field or any other business, it is essential that they identify the crucial problem in the industry that can be effectively solved. We should also focus on having a key differentiator either in technology, software, or business model. And in general, every entrepreneur should have big dreams and a passion for learning and solving problems. Where do you envision Spintly in the long run, and what are your future goals? How do you plan to embrace the changes happening in your industry? Our vision is to build a world more intelligent and more straightforward by providing a frictionless access control experience to users. We want to make the building smarter with our fully wireless mesh platform for intelligent building devices.

Visionary Leader Rohin started his career as a scientist working for Bhabha Atomic Research Centre and then worked in the USA for 12 years at Motorola, Nokia, Broadcom and RF DSP. He returned to India in 2017 intending to build a company that would develop technology-based products to solve critical problems in the building automation space. Rohin is a visionary leader with extensive experience in technology, hardware, and product development. Rohin Co-founded Spintly in Sep2017 intending to develop innovative wireless products and technologies for the IoT (Internet of Things) market. Rohin launched a fully wireless access control IoT Platform that allows users to unlock doors with their smartphones. The Spintly technology helps reduce more than 70% of the wired infrastructure cost needed for building automation. This has created a paradigm shift in the access control a n d b u i l d i n g au to m at i o n wo r l d globally.

The industry is changing at a rapid pace. The only way to stay ahead of the curve is to keep innovating. And we do this by participating in various organizations that define new technology standards and hiring smart people who can keep working on new technologies. What is the current industrial scenario of the biometric services sector? The current scenario is highly affected by the COVID-19 Pandemic. The biometric industry has been heavily influenced by this pandemic. The use of fingerprint-based biometric devices was completely halted throughout the pandemic, and we see this trend continuing. Demand for face recognition based biometric solutions has increased. New ways of providing biometrics solutions have emerged. One of them is giving biometric solutions using smartphones.
