THINKING? I
n challenge, we thrive! We are natural problem-solving creatures. Without challenges and problems, we don’t grow or mature completely. So much so that if we are deprived of sufficient stimulation – if we don’t get to use our intelligence and problemsolving abilities – we suffer. Design thinking is an approach used for creative and practical problemsolving. The concept is derived heavily from the methods and processes that designers use, at the same time it has evolved from a range of different fields – including architecture, engineering, and business. Design thinking is unlike the traditional problem solving which is linear and structured. In the traditional problem-solving approach, the end user is the last to see the solution. Whereas, design thinking is a problemsolving tool in a very flexible, continuous, and divergent manner. This
approach has a human-centred core. In the design thinking approach, when you sit down to create a solution for a business need, the priority that you need to consider is what is the human need behind it? It is particularly usercentric, focusing first and foremost on humans, identifying people's needs and developing effective solutions to suit those needs. Another distinguishing factor about design thinking is that it is a ‘solutionbased’ approach to rather than a ‘problem-based’ approach. The solution-based thinking focuses on finding appropriate solutions; formulating something constructive to effectively tackle a certain problem. This is opposite to the ‘problem-based’ thinking which fixates on the obstacles and limitations. Design thinking is a five-step process; the steps are as follows explained with the help of an example of an online marketplace for lodging, like Airbnb:

Step 2 Analysing the interviews, you can now understand the actual needs that people need addressed. One way to do that is to identify the activities and verbs that the people mention while talking about the problem. After your analysis, formulate a problem statement.

For the example mentioned above, the problem statement could be something regarding affordable travelling accommodation and the lack there of.
Step 1 Conduct interviews with people to find out what they really care about. We need to empathise with their situation. For example, if you want to help travel enthusiasts, you might find they need to find hacks to support their hobby as it can get very expensive at times. Living in hotels every time is not something that everyone can afford, and tourist attractions are bound to have costlier accommodations. Later in the interview, you might want to dig a little deeper – look for personal stories and situations where things became difficult. Ideally, you re-do the process of the same problem with many people.

Step 3 At this step, you focus solely on your problem statement and try to come up with ideas that address it. The aim should not be to come up with a perfect idea, but rather to come up with multiple ideas. Sketch up your best ideas and show them to people you are trying to help so that you can get feedback. When it comes to helping travelenthusiasts, one of the best ideas would be to strike up an arrangement with natives of a travel destination who have spare, unused living space to rent out for a few days.
Step 4 Take a time to consider what you've learnt from your discussions about the various concepts. Ask yourself, “Would this idea function in the context of real people's lives?” Your solution could be a combination of your new original idea and an existing idea or concept. Sketch up a final solution and go build a prototype. For our example, talk to landlords and houseowners of popular travel destinations if they would be comfortable with this arrangement. Develop a software that can facilitate the same, keeping in mind the trust-factor between homeowners and travelenthusiasts as the top priority. Launch a prototype software.

Step 5 In the cases when people don’t like it, don’t defend your ideas. The primary objective is to help people, so you need to learn what works and what doesn’t. Feedback is great! Then go back to ideation and prototyping and apply what you’ve learned. Repeat this problem till you have a prototype that solves the real problem. For the above example, after launching the prototype software for everyone to try out, get continuous feedback from the users and troubleshoot through the problems that arise. Repeat this process if necessary, to come up with better solutions to help travel-enthusiasts.
Companies like Airbnb and CouchSurfing represent the solutions to the example mentioned above in the form of online marketplace for affordable lodgings and hospitality exchange services. The question now remains, what other creative and exciting solutions we can come up with to the problems existing in the world today, through the way of design thinking? - Aditya Umale

Be it any tool or software we teach our students to learn, experiment and master them. We make them understand what trend means in an industry and how it changes the Human interactive design. What challenges has your staff faced in the earlier days of the institute? What struggles is the staff going through now with respect to providing great learning experience to students? Initial stage, our counsellor was facing the minor issues of how we differ from other training programs. It has been addressed quickly. During the Pandemic in 2020, we had converted all our activities online. We were facing minor issues like internet connectivity, and students adapting to the online classes. Apart from that, we never face any other problems. What are the strategically driven plans that you are implementing to scale your design school/ institute in the year 2021? Currently we are conducting our programs online. This brought us many students from various countries including Australia, USA, Sweden, Portugal and more. Currently, we are focusing globally. So far, 800+ students successfully completed the UI UX Design program and got placed across the country. We also soon hope to get back our regular offline classes.

Although the basis of AI products is the same, it is the user experience that makes a difference. We focus our efforts on creating a seamless user experience, which helps brands with adoption and acceptance from their customer base. Voice has established itself as the future of user interface. Voice and AI is one industry that has come to the fore and is making drastic changes to the norm. When designing for Voice AI products, it is integral to understand that there might be apprehension of adoption from the end-user. So,
focused efforts on designing a touchpoint in a personalized and humanistic manner will improve the user's experience and help with trial and adoption. While Voice and AI are the future, AI Analytics has become a prevalent force that drives everything from eCommerce to Social Media. AI Analytics helps gain deep insights into customers and project variants for mapped and unmapped data, this helps companies better their user experience and instills trust in the customers. It is important to note that AI Analytics is usually designed for people on the go, so a mobile-first design is ideal. The data should be simplified and presented in an easy-to-understand manner. When designing for AI analytics, data visualization is a key factor that helps the users understand and comprehend the data. AI and Emotion are another up and comer in the field. This is a relatively newer division of AI which helps companies understand their users and their experience better. Although

Emotion AI products are integrated with the software to capture the user's emotions and analyze their journey. So, it is integral, the design is user focused. The data and analysis from this product can be used in the physical world to help create new experiences for retail and other stores. As we look forward to what the future of AI brings in terms of design and technology, we always look at a new product through a user's lens. Designing for AI is about creating solutions that are balanced and work well for the brand and its consumers.
