What kind of challenges has your company faced being in the medical devices business? There had been many challenges faced by the company during the pandemic.

a) Loss of Business: This is an obvious one, Complete stoppage of business during lockdown period till June. The elective surgeries had stopped both due to patient apprehensions and hospital bed allocations to COVID patients. Though post July, there had been some recovery of surgeries, though it would take a little more time for the complete recovery to take place. b) People: Retaining and motivating Talent during this time was essential, and at the same time ensuring team safety was of prime importance. c) Connecting with Surgeons: It has been a delicate balance of maintaining safety of employees while maintaining commitment towards helping surgeons treat their patients better. d) Logistics: Maintaining logistics consistency and stock in hand due to disrupted supply chains across the seas.

As one of the prominent medical device enablers, what steps have you taken towards tackling the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact, all the while safeguarding your employees and taking care of your clientele’s needs? As you have rightly pointed out, employee safety has been on our foremost priority. We had taken a number of steps during COVID Pandemic including: Digitalization of connect and reach to Surgeons: As physical channels of reach to the surgeons had been restricted, we had established digital reach to the surgeons opening up as one of the major channels of two-way communication for product, requirement support, technical assistance etc. Protocoled service: To service the surgeries at the hospitals, we had established strict protocols for staff safety compliance in terms of Safety Kits, sanitization, Sanitized Instrument Transfer, Vehicle Protocol for Implant, and Instrument Delivery, in Hospital Protocol for Safety, and Post Surgery Protocols etc. Digitalizing the logistics: to maintain uninterrupted supply despite disrupted supply chains. Digitalization of medical education: We have trained more than 3000 surgeons through Online Platforms during the Pandemic. This includes Young Surgeons, Mid Senior surgeons and even Specialization Trainings with the Most Renowned and Best Surgeons in the World.
Digital channels for patient education: As almost more than 80% patients have done a digital research before visiting doctors, Right Awareness to the Patients had been an important initiative taken by us. What advice would you like to give to the young entrepreneurs who are looking to enter in the medical devices and healthcare space? Well, the expansion in the Sector has just started and we have a long way to go. As young Entrepreneurs, the time is ripe to get into platforms that connect the continuum of care. Hence Heath Tech is going to play a very important role in future. The

The thing about medicines is that they cannot help you unless they are consumed properly. Often due to negligence or general forgetfulness on our part there can be a case of under dosage or over dosage. Especially when we consider the elderly, where pill burden is usually high as is the complexity of the medicinal schedule. Also, currently, it cannot be expected that someone is physically present all the time to help with medicines. There are a few devices available for this, however they are either too high end and

healthcare can be observed due to this pandemic. We witnessed a historic race to develop vaccines at an unprecedented pace. Doctors and medical workers were compelled to adopt telemedicine during the pandemic. Various wearables and electronic gadgets and apps introduced within the optimizing healthcare delivery during the difficult time of the pandemic, find their relevance and utility well beyond within the pandemic too. This has also enabled furtherance of the growth of data science and AI in healthcare. This rapid advancement in technology coupled with increased willingness to adopt the same by the medical fraternity and the public at large, opens up the possibility of more equitable distribution of the benefits of advances in health sciences. The pandemic has truly opened opportunities galore for healthtech. What kind of challenges has your company faced being in the medical devices business? Challenges have come in all shapes and sizes. From the most obvious and ridiculous ones to proper technical ones. One big challenge was the unavailability of information and resources. Typically, many electronic modules are available at a hobbyist level. The raw components used at large industrial level are only available in bulk and are typically custom made. Being somewhere in between these two extremes, the development process gets unduly lengthy and expensive. However, often these have appeared as lessons and we have marched forward to better and crazier challenges. Being in the medical devices space, how necessary do you think it is to align one’s business with the latest technological developments? One must keep innovating to avoid being obsolete. While it’s very important to stay updated and well versed with the technical developments, one has to be careful so as not get carried away. It's all about the problem being solved. During our incubation at IIM Bangalore, one of the things that we learnt from our mentors was that it’s not about the features of your product; it's all about the benefits that it brings to the user. As one of the prominent medical device enablers, what steps have you taken towards tackling the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact, all the while safeguarding your employees and taking care of your clientele’s needs? Like any other company, we worked from home and could not get the team together in office during the COVID peak. We made sure that the entire team could avail resources at

their residence. We faced a lot of logistic issues and it was very difficult to obtain electronic components. We utilized the lockdown to establish Inovocare eAcademy, an e-platform for continued medical education. We regularly interact and the platform is utilized for academically rich communication. We are also continuously experimenting with 3D printing, in order to try and reduce the cost and the time required at the development stage. What advice would you like to give to the young entrepreneurs who are looking to enter in the medical devices and healthcare space? It's like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get. Jokes aside, it's a bumpy ride and a long one, so get a good team. Happy hustling! How do you envision on sustaining your company’s competency in this ever-cutthroat business ecosystem? Where do you see your company in the next five years? The vision for Inovocare Healthsoft Solutions has always been of a multiple product company. The sector that we primarily look at is elderly care. Over the next few years, we plan to have strategic partnerships on multiple levels to scale up our operations. Apart from ensuring a solid product offering, we plan on continuous awareness and interaction programs with both the end users and the medical fraternity. On the longer run we see ourselves as a reputed Medtech company with multiple product offerings in the market in India and Overseas. 1. Digital Front Door The COVID-19 pandemic has proved the world that every country has something to teach and learn from its style of management. COVID-19 has accelerated the adoption of digital healthcare technologies by health care systems and organisations around the world. The ‘digital front door' has been the ‘only front door' for patients to access healthcare services in many countries. Outpatient hospital and general practitioner visits have been transformed around the world, with up to three-quarters of all consultations now taking place virtually. We do not expect the digital front door to close after the pandemic crisis has passed because patients and caregivers have accepted the ease and affordability of this form of treatment. Scaling and maintaining these digital interactions would be a major challenge for every health system now and in the postCOVID-19 period. 2. Clean and dirty sites In response to the pandemic, health systems around the world, including China, Spain, and the United States, have implemented stringent infection control measures, including the separation of COVID and nonCOVID patients in hospitals and nursing homes, to prevent the spread of the virus. 3. Hot and cold sites Some countries are developing hot and cold sites in response to the pandemic. Cold sites provide nonCOVID care to reduce infection risk, keep operations running smoothly without disrupting acute care, and free up space for elective procedures. To deliver the kind of new patient flows required by COVID-19, it will be critical to establish hot and cold sites. In several countries, public-private partnerships have been established to further increase public-sector capability in this manner. 4. Consolidated specialist programmes have been scaled up. The drastic increase in demand has exposed the lack of scale and centralisation of primary care and specialised facilities, which would be needed to ease every health system's transition into the post-COVID-19 modern reality. 5. Aged care services COVID-19 is especially dangerous to the elderly and controlling the virus's dissemination in long-term care facilities around the world has proven difficult. During this difficult period in the industry, a few countries have stood out by acting quickly to protect the lives of their senior citizens. COVID-19 also uncovered weaknesses in the management of health and care services. Many
states have recognised this oversight and are seeking steps. Traditionally, aged care providers have not been treated as a part of the health system. There is an immediate and growing need to engage in and successfully align aged care programmes with health systems in the post-COVID-19 modern reality. 6. Supply chain reliance and back-office transformation Aside from the health consequences of COVID-19, the virus is having a major commercial effect around the world, especially in the supply chain. The coronavirus has shown the flaws in offshore and “just in time” supply chains based on lean manufacturing values. Many countries have taken the lead in procuring Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and others, such as Russia, the United States, Germany, and Saudi Arabia, have had vital supply development moved within their territories. Furthermore, in some areas, local PPE supply chains have forged new partnerships between suppliers, colleges, and procurement experts, bypassing legislation, and bureaucracy. 7. Command centres In several nations, health services and institutions have understood the value of data-driven insights in strategic and organisational decision making. To handle treatment in a much more effective and reliable fashion, command centres similar to air traffic control systems are being created. 8. Agile workforce Healthcare systems and their suppliers found that their workforce preparation and implementation models had vulnerabilities during the response process. The workforce braced themselves for a "staff recession" due to physical, behavioural, and emotional fatigue, as well as to sustain operations in a post-COVID-19 modern reality. The workforce would need to evolve to become more adaptive, employ data-driven knowledge, and inspire their employees for the healthcare industry to survive the pandemic. Providers and policymakers would need to follow more flexible project management practises to support the post-COVID-19 emerging reality, allowing them to drive accelerated improvements and performance enhancement measures. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a worldwide influence in several aspects. Taking cues from the pandemic, it shall be wise for organizations, to ensure business community, maintain a healthy balance sheet and keep a more detailed track of expenses against revenue status to have a clear picture of the financial status of the organization and accordingly plan future goals.
Self-sufficiency in medical technology will continue to grow driven by an increase in the demand for locally produced goods. Looking at the pace of technological advancements and the induction of new-age technologies, I am sure, we will be able to improve our logistics infrastructure, strengthen our manufacturing sector, and be able to develop our own forecasting systems that will further accelerate the Indian healthcare sector.
