ith a population of 1.39 billion (139 crores) and an estimated 135 litre water consumption per capita per day, India lives in a highly water-stressed environment. Add to it the woes of water supply, wastewater issues, and climate changes impacting monsoon on which agriculture is majorly dependent.

TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE WATER MANAGEMENT

Around 60 % of India’s population relies upon agriculture and allied sectors. Industrial, developmental, and other projects like Smart City Mission add to the pressure on water resources. The demand for water in urban areas is on the rise every year. To meet the rising demand, water is transported from hundreds of kilometres, which is neither cost-efficient nor energy efficient. Most of the water used flows back into the ecosystem as wastewater. Besides, drinking water is mainly contaminated and not safe for drinking. This necessitates the treatment of water. Drinking water shortage and growing population have also increased the need for water treatment. Safe drinking water and reuse of wastewater will largely resolve the water scarcity issues. Be it drinking water or wastewater; the solution is the treatment of the water for facilitating sustainable living. Goal Six of the United Nations Sustainable Development

Sumita Sarkar Editor-in-Chief

sumita@insightssuccess.com

Goals (SDG) focuses on clean water and sanitation for all. While the government has been successful to a certain extent in supplying clean water, more needs to be done. Also, water conservation and sustainable water management could avert the global water crisis that is predicted to happen a decade from now. This calls for urgent steps towards water treatment to ensure conservation and economical use of water. Outbreaks of dengue, swine flu, and the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic only highlighted the criticality of hygiene, sanitation, and clean water. India’s practice of washing hands with clean water is now a global practice. While governments have taken initiatives to treat water and wastewater through their plants, sensing the rising need to aid in water treatment, private companies have pitched in. This has dramatically reduced the burden of government bodies. To make the projects energy-efficient, some companies also use solar power for operating their plants. We happened to learn about some crusaders of water

treatment plants and have featured them in our latest edition of Insights Success, India’s Best Water Treatment Companies to Watch, 2021. We are sure this edition will spark your interest in water management. Read on!

We at NJSEI as one family, have been collectively working together to exceed client’s expectations and achieve client advocacy

T

he COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 was nothing less than a global disaster. However, it came as a blessing in disguise for the environment. As factories, offices, schools, colleges, and other public places remained shut, less energy was consumed and less pollution generated. Amid the heart wrenching atmosphere of sickness and death due COVID-19 and mass unemployment caused due to lockdowns and reduced spending, we saw nature refreshing herself. Major water streams and rivers were less polluted due to reduced human industrial activity. The break helped the environment and wildlife to revive and imparted lessons for the humankind to watch their actions and take precautionary steps. However, for the past decade many industries in India have been on a mission to reduce and prevent water pollution in India through their ambitious wastewater treatment and recycling projects. One such organization setting milestones in Indian Water Sector is NJS Engineers India Pvt. Ltd. (NJSEI). NJSEI, a subsidiary of NJS Co. Ltd., Japan was established in 2007 with a vision of being a leading engineering consulting firm in India. We had an opportunity to interview Dr Uday G. Kelkar, Managing Director and CEO of NJSEI, for the latest edition of Insights Success – “India’s Best Water Treatment Companies to Watch-2021.” The company aims to provide conventional as well as innovative and cost-effective solutions to customers to mitigate environmental problems in India.

arlier as a kid have you heard stories from your grandmother about how they used to walk several kilometres to get water for daily household chores? You must have heard your mother shouting to close the water tap because there will be no water supply for the next two days. Water, a basic need was so tough to get, do you not think it is our responsibility to harvest water so the future generation should not waste time wandering in search of water.

MM 2021 | 15 | www.insightssuccess.in

Three fourth of our planet is filled with water, which is not entirely drinkable, reason being chemicals, dust, and salt in the water. Reports show that over 2 million people live in countries with adequate water supply. In such times when we know the water scarcity situation in the world it is foolishness to waste it.

Rain barrels

Water is so underrated in the world. It is literally the lifeline of living things. Imagine water getting exhausted like fossil fuels and other natural resources. Didn’t you get goosebumps for a second? Water, which we humans waste without pondering about its availability for future is unfortunate.

Rain saucer

This beautiful planet, where we live is not so fortunate for some regions. In some places the rain is incessant, and, in some places, it is difficult to survive because of no water. All over the world, there are still many places that face water shortage every other day. Here is when rainwater harvesting helps people survive. Imagine a world without water, how will humanity survive? How will anything survive? Water keeps every living being alive. No one can afford squandering water. Hence, rainwater harvesting is the best thing that should be done to save water. The understanding of using resources correctly should be the priority all over the world. In today’s time, water is transported from one place to another by several means to provide water to those who need. Apparently, the places with plenty of water sources provide water to the places with less sources of water. In the rural areas, you might have noticed wells or ponds to save the rainwater. It is like a ritual to dig ponds and wells in rural areas. It shows people coming together to find solutions in difficult situations.

It is the easiest way for saving rainwater that can be done by everyone. Placing a barrel beneath the flow of water or beneath a pipeline is easy and affordable.

Rain saucer is basically an umbrella placed upside-down to collect rainwater. It is connected with a pipe which can be directed wherever necessary. Sometimes, it is placed underground with only the rain saucer above the ground to collect the water. Underground tanks Underground tanks are made by digging into the ground. It is then cemented to avoid infiltration. Water is obtained through pipes and the top of the underground tank is sealed. It is beneficial also because the sun does not reach underground, which resists the water from getting evaporated. Trenches Trenches is one of the famous techniques used for irrigation purpose. When it rains, the flowing water is directed towards farms by making trenches or excavation in the ground. By applying these ways, we can save a whole lot of water. It is a smart way to live and to think about coming times.

Let’s take a peek into the ways to preserve rainwater. Dams Dams are the most well-known source of rainwater harvesting. Dams are built for three major reasons—providing water to draught areas, irrigation, and hydro power plants. The saved water is further distributed for domestic use.

very organization and individual are nowadays looking for ways which would make things energy efficient and contribute to a greener environment. They are looking for ways which would help them to become more energy efficient. One such way is to reduce the expenses of a wastewater treatment plant. As per research, around 2% of the total electricity production in the US is consumed by wastewater and water treatment. It is expected that increasing levels of treatment and maintenance will cause the increase of operational costs from 30% to 40% over the subsequent 20 years. Energy consumption in wastewater treatment plants can be reduced in many ways. This can provide various benefits and contribute towards water conservation. Even if a plant is operating at its best, companies can benefit in various ways by following the below-mentioned strategies to reduce their carbon footprint: Upgrading Pump Stations A major portion of energy usage is attributed to different pump stations used in different communities and companies. Older pumps were designed in such a way that they would operate at a single speed and on/ off cycling. Nowadays, the pump/ motor, drive combinations provide more efficiency over a wide range of flows. Companies can upgrade older pumps to ensure long-lasting operation and maintenance savings. They can also use inexpensive and more reliable variable frequency drives so that they can match pump speeds to flow rates, in turn, reducing energy needs. Optimizing Aeration Over 50% of annual electricity usage is attributed to the aeration system in an activated sludge wastewater treatment plant. Companies can upgrade the blowers and air distribution systems components with variable frequency drives and install dissolved oxygen control systems. This MM 2021 | 29 | www.insightssuccess.in

can optimize aeration and can decrease the blower’s electricity consumption. It is essential to replace high aging blowers with single high-efficiency turbo blower, which has a wide range of operation and can be controlled based on dissolved oxygen. If a corporation has an ageing diffuser system, they will replace the diffuser grid with new finepore or ultra-fine-pore diffusers. This will improve oxygen transfer efficiency and reduce the amount of air needed for treatment. Improving Sludge Management Processes which handle solids consume over 20% of the wastewater treatment facility. Various stages ranging from pumping and disposing of solid requires energy at every step. Companies can save energy and money through minimizing transported water and solids and can also utilize biogas for the production of electricity and for heating water. Recovering and Recycling Essential Nutrients Phosphorus is an important component in fertilizers. If any company is planning to remove biological phosphorus, they may consider the feasibility of creating a commercial grade fertilizer, which is marketable. This will help in transforming a necessary operational cost into a new source of revenue for the utility. It will also improve the sidestream performance of the plant because it will reduce phosphorus loading in the recycle streams. Judiciously Utilizing Disinfection Companies can eliminate costly and hazardous chemicals by replacing their chlorine disinfection with an ultraviolet (UV) light disinfection system. It is difficult to manufacture and transport chlorine and dichlorination chemicals since they are expensive and energy intensive. UV disinfection systems use minimal energy, and another safety benefit is the decommissioning of hazardous chlorine disinfection systems.

high-efficiency T-8 fixtures, which contribute towards energy savings. Maximizing Gravity Gravity is a beautiful gift of nature which can be used by companies to make process improvements in wastewater treatment plants. Organizations can keep a proper track of how their plant transports flow. They should consider whether they are properly utilizing gravitational forces. This will assist them to configure and let gravity, instead of electric motors, to get the job done. Automating Operations There are many databases and information systems available nowadays, which can provide companies with real-time data on the treatment processes in any plant. These databases automate the operations of any plant or also allow the operator remote control of the plant. This system can assist in monitoring equipment and in alerting the operator of emerging issues. With proper planning and integration, these databases can provide the operators with a variety of hands-on and hands-free control. This assists the operators in performing other duties. With continuous monitoring and trending of various processes and equipment, companies can get a clear idea about the periods when energy usage can be reduced, or peak energy loads can be taken care of. The strategies mentioned above can play an important role in managing various procedures at any wastewater treatment plant, and in reducing costs efficiently.

Upgradation of Lighting and HVAC Systems Large wastewater treatment facilities consume a significant amount of energy because of various functions such as lighting, heating, cooling of enclosed spaces, and so on. In case companies have old T-12 fluorescent lighting fixtures in their plants, they may consider replacing these with new
