W
ith the onset of Covid-19, businesses across various verticals have experienced disruption in their operations, nature, and distribution channels. he impact of COVID-19 has been devastating for not only the Indian commercial market, but one can see this phenomenon throughout the world. If we consider the personal and healthcare market, there was a panic situation initially with regards to availability of hygiene products such as hand sanitizers and disinfectants. Due to this situation, there was shortage for a brief period. Development of cheap, fake and harmful products entering the Indian market has resulted in supply of substandard products leading to various skin diseases due to the limited regulatory forces in effect. As a matter of fact, a hand sanitizer is expected to sanitize your hands while also protecting your skin. There are specific ingredients that formulate a good, non-toxic and safe hand sanitizer which is safe for skin and the environment as well. However, during this pandemic, certain manufacturers used banned / toxic chemicals only for the sake of flooding the market with harmful products and making selfish and fraudulent monetary gains. “We at Alliance Formulations condemn such unethical tendencies and strongly believe in our principles of providing products that are certified and developed through legal, and socially/ medically / environmentally acceptable means,” shares the team of Alliance World. A World of Possibilities Alliance Formulations is a subsidiary which is a part of Alliance World Group. It was established as RMGR
(RamdittaMal Ganga Ram) group, a multi-functional establishment in Gojra situated near Lyallpurin the year 1929 (undivided India). “We are RMGR’s torchbearers today, with a vision committed to advanced hygiene solutions through research and development via socially and environmentally acceptable means in the interest of users and stakeholders as well as society at large,” says the team of Alliance Formulations. Alliance Formulations has been manufacturing products for leading multinationals such as, ITC, Johnson & Johnson, Lonza, Schulke, and Sanosil to name a few. The company has its own brand Algard since 2004, that is extensive and caters to various industries, from hand sanitizers, surface disinfectants to aerial disinfectants. It also covers animal care products. Many of its disinfectants and hand sanitizers are CDSCO and DCGI approved as well as registered formulations with US. E.P.A, these being the highest Indian regulatory bodies for certification of healthcare products. The brand Algard is well received in the healthcare and

pharmaceutical sectors since 2004 and in November 2019, the products were developed and made available to general public to promote better hygiene. Recently their product 'W10 - Water Disinfectant' has been approved by FSSAI for use in packaged drinking water. Symbolic of Alliance World’s priorities with respect to its products and manufacturing practices, the company’s team has coined the acronym: ‘SHE’ which stands for ‘Safety, Health and Environment.’
Struggles of the World Taking the pandemic head on was nothing less than ‘Taking the bull by its horns’. But the team at Alliance Formulations managed the escalated requirements by making its disinfectants and hand sanitizers easily and widely available. “Our production team worked selflessly day & night in spite of the pandemic wreaking havoc worldwide,” says Mr. Anil Nagpal, a Partner in Alliance World. The company’s sales teams work closely with users and buyers to ensure that there are no gaps in
availability and people do not face shortage at any given point. Additionally, the company donated 21,000 bottles of hand sanitizers to the government for various hospitals and medical staff working selflessly during these tough times. Not just in 2020, but if considered, all these diseases like COVID-19, EBOLA, HIV, Influenza, Mildwest, etc., have entered our eco-system through animals. Alliance Formulations developed product lines to tackle such viruses at grassroot level by formulating
‘animal care disinfectant products’ that are being used in various breeding farms and dairies and preventing the viruses from coming in contact with humans at the very first stage. The company has managed to do all of this with the advent of various technological advancements. Incorporating new technologies in any industry is vital. With new situations arising every now and then, a business should adapt and evolve continually. Today, technology is not just limited to creating a new product, but it plays an equally important role for a business to introduce it in the market and make sure it has maximum outreach. At Alliance Formulations, working closely with world leaders like Sanosil and Dr. Schumacher, the company’s endeavor is to adopt new technologies and implement them for all its products for the safety and convenience of users. “To achieve maximum outreach, we have adopted new technologies to strengthen our supply chain and delivery,” shares Mr. Anil. The‘World’Leaders Taking over from his father Mr. O. P Nagpal in 1980, Founder and CEO of Alliance Formulations, Mr. Anil Nagpal is a champion in logistics and manufacturing. He steered the company towards new technologies, development and growth. To begin with, taking good care of the workers and staff was the top priority for Mr. Anil who believes in the power of 'Team Work'. His belief in the dictum - "If you want to achieve, work hard
Our e orts are also to keep everyone away from water borne diseases by providing clean drinking water, clean vegetables, by use of innovative technology transfer from Sanosil AG, Switzerland
...but if you want to grow, work along,” has taken Alliance Formulations to new heights. Under his leadership, the company stands as a leading powerhouse for research, development and manufacturing of hygiene products. Currently, as part of its growth strategy for marketing and modern practices, Alliance Formulations has brought in Ms. Garima Nagpal to join her father, Mr. Anil as their lead marketing executive. Ms. Garima has been instrumental in creating robust marketing strategies for group performance and also giving it a new approach and outlook in terms of branding and technology. During this pandemic she has led the company from the frontlines and has provided a fresh impetus. Advising young entrepreneurs, she says, “Focus on the way these products are manufactured, by committing themselves to high ethical benchmarks in developing safe and ethical products, which in my view is the core principle to be followed in any industry, and even more so in pharmaceuticals.” Complimenting the above quote Mr. Anil concludes,“To bring about a paradigm shift in the way these products are sold by adopting new technologies, working closely with users in order to make usage convenient and effective and also use I.T., to strengthen supply chain management which is important in a large country like ours, so that the products reach maximum people at optimal costs.”

Addressing the Pandemic Scenario The pandemic has disrupted both large organization and the start-up/MSME ecosystem in India. The impact will certainly be long-lasting and may have grave recursions unless the macroeconomic policies are forged in a way to stimulate the consumer purchase cycle. Though there has been a major drop in FMCG, since most companies are focusing on the essential items, it would take time before the market resurrects the demand for “non-essential” items as well. Since Megamorph has been covered under the essential commodities list, it has been trying to work with minimum disruption to ensure uninterrupted supply to its customers and partners. The company has seen the demand sore for certain products which are needed to keep the frontline worker safe and secure and it has ensured that supplies are received by them on time. Hygiene and Sanitization I
t is an understatement to say that 2020 has been a lifechanging year for most industries. Covid-19 has transformed most businesses irreversibly, mostly for the worse. However, it has provided tremendous tailwinds to the disinfectants business, which has seen a global boost in sales with a wider customer base that understands the critical importance of good hygiene and sanitation, both for home and workplace. Moreover, this broader customer base is here to stay as individuals care more about personal hygiene and companies get more serious about incorporating effective sanitation measures as a long term practice and as part of their regular SOPs.
Hygiene as Part of the Daily Routine is Here to Stay One of the many positive long-term behavioural changes generated by this pandemic is an increased focus and attention to hygiene – of oneself as well as one’s environment. While hand-washing was always touted as an essential part of one’s routine, now hand disinfection with sanitizer as well as disinfection of surfaces (floors, work desks, high touch point areas) is of paramount importance and a part of daily protocols. People will also take greater care to wear masks when sick, for fear of infecting others. The Importance of an Effective Disinfection Strategy for UnLockdown UnLockdown has brought with it many challenges, and one of the most arduous, besides the problem of widespread testing, has been that of protecting the population from Covid-19 transmission as people get back on the roads, buses, trains and into office buildings. Let’s say that every individual is exposed to contamination from approximately 100 potential carriers of infection during a commute. The medium of contamination can be shoes, clothes and hands. So if this contamination collected on mediums during transit is not eliminated at the doorstep of an office, each person entering will be exposed to not only the contamination of the 100 potential carriers in that workspace, but also to the additional 100 potential carriers that each of their colleagues were exposed to during the

Beyond Covid-19
commute, effectively exposing each individual to 10,000 potential carriers of infection. However, if each individual goes through a disinfection process before entry, during which his clothes, shoes and hands (mediums) are disinfected, then the contamination gathered during transit is eliminated at the doorstep of the office, which means that each individual is now exposed to just the 100 potential carriers that are in the workspace, and not the contamination of all the potential carriers in transit. This process thereby reduces risk of infection by 100x. This example clearly demonstrates the critical importance of an effective disinfection strategy as people re-enter workspaces and public spaces in UnLockdown. Product Quality Checks are Critical One of the unfortunate side-effects of the massive boom in the disinfectants industry, especially in India, is the rise of spurious manufacturers who have opportunistically into manufacturing sanitizers and other disinfectants without proper licenses. In fact, in a recent raid reported by mainstream media, nearly 50% of 122 hand sanitizers tested were found to not match label specifications and 5 were found to contain toxic methanol. With adulterated sanitizers flooding the market and driving down prices of this product, which has now become a commodity, genuine manufacturers cannot compete at these low prices with good-quality products that cost more to manufacture. Ultimately, it is consumers who suffer when faced with poor quality products that are injurious to health. As more people take to this business for short-term gain, it is essential for customers to carefully check that the manufacturers have genuine licenses in order to trust the quality of the products they are purchasing. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Devendra Mohnot is a metallurgical engineer with an MBA by education and has nearly 50 years of experience in several industries - pharmaceuticals, diamond manufacturing, tea manufacturing, and spring manufacturing. He is the Founder and Managing Director of Antrix Hygiene Limited, which has 25 years of expertise in the infection control industry with 1,000+ hospital and pharmaceutical customers. Antrix Hygiene exclusively launched and built Henkel Ecolab's healthcare business in India and its customers include Asian Heart, Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani, Bhatia Hospital, Jaslok, MIOT, JIPMER Puducherry, Lakeshore, Sree Chitra Medical Institute, SGPGI Lucknow, Novartis, Zydus Cadilla, Sanofi, Emcure, Wockhardt, Intas, Sandoz, Chiron, and IPCA, among others. Covid-19 is here to stay, at least for the short-term, and in order to stay protected while resuming some semblance of normal life, all workspaces will need to rely on the services of infection control specialists. It will be the role of these specialists to evaluate infection risks, propose specialized solutions and products that are both effective and safe for human health, and educate end users about proper usage of these products for optimum results. It is every individual’s greatest hope that a Covid-19 vaccine will soon be released that will make the world go back to what it was before this fateful year. However, such a reversal will not be easy, even with a vaccine. We believe there will be some permanent and lasting changes to human behaviour, workplace design, and most importantly, to personal awareness of sanitation and disinfection. It has taken a pandemic for us to realize the importance of good hygiene but let’s hope at least this lesson will outlive the pandemic!

way forward for India’s economic development. Many businesses will struggle, some may even die. But as with economic adversities of the past, new industries will emerge bringing with it renewed hope of recovery. Eventually, things will go back to normal. Just that we’ll have to change the definition of normal.” Adapting With Technological Changes Technology is rising fast, costs are falling, and new designs are being rolled out constantly. If enterprises haven’t been systematically adapting to new technology, the growth of a business is compromised. Today human touch and technology go hand-in-hand. T
he scared don’t need evidence of the supernatural. They quite naturally believe iteven if nothing of the kind exists. That’s the thing about Fear. Besides being a four-letter word, some read it as the acronym for “False Evidence Appearing Real”. Concerning the argument between chemical and eco-friendly (read natural) disinfectants, this acronym could be true to a large extent. The Covid-19 pandemic has put in us more than the fear of God. To continue our existence at all costs, first, it was that we need to disinfect, and then it was that the disinfectant ought to be eco-friendly only. Confused and scared as we are, most of us simply go with the best talker who talks (and cons) us out of our monies and in most cases hands us stuff that either way, doesn’t do its job! Today we give you a list of to-dos and arguments that can be put forth to state your point, and go with the best option. Believe in an authority Governments worldwide have set standards for disinfectants, be they chemical-based or plant-based. Read these carefully and if they suffice your needs, go for them. Remember to go ONLY with the certified brands as they have test reports to back their claims. Untested brands may have high decibel promos re-costs and output but in most cases could fall way short on various parameters that matter. It’s in times of the Covid-19 pandemic that one should stick to the tried and tested, and avoid the trial and error approach. Errors in these times could cost a bomb whose explosion may take years to get over because it’s about LIFE. Believe in the existing Chemical or natural, believe in that which has been around because by being around it has proved its worth. Also, established brands are known to have set patterns of developing products which go through extensive trials to prove their efficacy. Be it testing times like the present or times in the past when new products could be introduced at leisure, they are said to follow a set timetested way of releasing products. Incidentally, the same applies to disinfectants be they chemical-based or nature-based. The harshest chemical is also a product of nature For those who hold the eco-friendly tag close to their hearts, a question. Where do chemicals come from? Like everything else, most chemicals going into disinfectants either are plant extracts or have other
www.insightssuccess.in
“earthy” origins like those that go into eco-friendly disinfectants. On the contrary, it is possible that some chemicals like Pyrethroids, a pesticide derived from compounds synthesized out of chrysanthemums is used extensively in green-pesticides could be more harmful though its effects become visible only slowly. Studies on animals show evidence of damage to their neurological, immune and reproductive systems and are said to have contaminated streams and rivers in the US at concentrations that can kill small creatures vital for the survival of fish and aquatic life. Eco-friendly can sometimes be as bad for the ecology! Eco-friendly can sometimes mean that the harmful chemicals in them are either not mentioned or purposefully obfuscated, or are kept to the minimum to show its “wonderful” effects. In a time when their effect wears out or they become less potent than required, they might be tempted to up the quantity of harmful chemicals. This continuous addition over time can lead to ecological disasters when they get mixed with water and enter our water streams for potable uses. Assess your needs and find other ways of disinfecting The Covid-19 is one of the best examples of where not to go overboard. Disinfectants and cleaners being used extensively without a care or caution, there is every possibility that one may become the casualty of overuse of disinfectant rather than the pandemic itself. People staying at home or away from crowds continue to be safe in the absence of active involvement or closeness with carriers and may not need any disinfectant, chemicals or plantbased. Against this, if people start to procure so-called “eco-friendly” and use it extensively, they could end-up with skin problems instead. It thus makes sense to first know one’s exact needs and then actively go with the most known brand. It does make sense to take down the details of the chemicals used and enquire with the dealers and suppliers of the exact nature of the chemicals used. Eco-friendly may not be the same as chemical-free! The Covid-19 pandemic has seen the most prolific and extensive use of disinfects in the shortest time in the history of humanity. It has also shown that where pressing demand exists, unscrupulous suppliers will get in and sell anything while labelling it “eco-friendly” In these times, it makes sense to use “chemical-free” nature-based disinfectants that use plant and animal extracts that do not disturb, harm or alter plants and animals in any material ways while giving out products that are safe to humans and the environment – despite the size and type of usage.

BOOSTING EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT AND BUSINESS GROWTH WITH INCLUSIVE DIVERSITY
M
odern businesses are no longer bound by geographical and regional limits. In such a world where age, race, religion, nationality or sexuality are mere attributes, and not limitations, it is critical for businesses to focus on diversity at the workplace. As an organization, it is important to hire quality talent that improves output, employee satisfaction and revenue generation. A diverse workforce which transcends boundaries is the logical first step to achieve business objectives. Having great engagement and diversity at the workplace can boost a company’s market reputation and profitability. Modern business leaders are aware of the trends and don’t hesitate in creating policies or taking initiatives which foster workplace engagement and diversity. Let’s take a look at some ways in which a cultural shift towards diversity can drive business growth: Inclusive not just diverse In any conventional large business or organization, employees from different ethnic, religious or social backgrounds work together. However, more often than not, the mere presence of diversity is not capable of driving engagement and this is where inclusiveness gains prominence. The purpose of diversity is automatically defeated if the organization sets rules and processes that discourage diverse expressions. Thus, it is important to provide support to your employees in a way that they are encouraged to maintain individuality even while working towards common business goals. Removing language barriers, providing infrastructure that supports differentlyabled employees or new mothers are some of the things that companies are doing to support diversity. Celebrating religious and ethnic diversity An organization has the same religion and ethnicity as each of its employees. Hence, an inclusive organization can boost employee experience and engagement by celebrating and honouring the diversity it has. For instance, you can celebrate different religious festivals or practices, create cafeteria menus that consider all sensibilities, etc.

Employees working in organizations that identify and honour individual sensibilities are easier to retain. Give everyone an equal voice and opportunity No matter where your company is located or which group forms the majority of employees (assuming there is one such majority group), as a business leader, it is important to treat everyone equally and give them an equal opportunity to grow. Great companies let their employees know that they are valued, respected and are crucial to the organization’s plans irrespective of their diversity. Employee engagement in such organizations is boosted by the constant support and freedom given to them in terms of sharing inputs and feedback. In many cases, employees from minority groups or genders become afraid of expressing their opinions or disagreements due to fears of persecution. They might be afraid of complaining against discrimination due to the fear of losing their jobs, thus, remaining disconnected and adversely affecting the engagement at workplace. Age diversity One of the common problems faced by modern businesses is the lack of age diversity. Being young and educated, start-up founders are well versed with the need to hire people from different ethnic, religious or regional groups. They also pay adequate attention to gender diversity and maintaining a healthy male/female ratio in the workplace. However, there may be a lack of focus on age diversity. More often than not, you will see that most employees of an organization belong to the same age bracket. While this might make interaction easier and more informal among the workforce, it also greatly diminishes the scope of insights and market understanding that age diversity can bring in. For instance, Generation X has different sensibilities than millennials and vice versa. Having a multi-generation workforce helps in creating different buyer personas based on the inputs from the teams, helping the company create better products and services.

Language diversity The diversity of language is inextricably linked to cultural and regional diversity. People speaking different languages at the workplace automatically make the atmosphere conducive to engagement and broadening of cultural understanding as well as sensitization. Employees coming from different backgrounds get to better understand their colleagues from other communities, regions and nationalities and their needs. This cultivates mutual tolerance, respect and flexibility among the employees compared to organizations that lack such diversity. How diversity benefits a business There are numerous benefits of having a diverse workforce that go far beyond employee engagement and experience. For instance, a broader perspective and understanding of the target markets. Employees will have different opinions and inputs and can collectively help the business in understanding the customers and establishing a stronger rapport with them. A multi-lingual workforce could help in communicating with people from different states in their regional languages and delivering superior customer experience. This is something we have already seen in the telecom sector and other pan India service provider organizations. The superior audience connect helps in boosting brand loyalty and turnover for the organization. In the post-pandemic world, inclusivity is the only way forward for businesses. Brands that adopt diversity to improve their workplace engagement will also succeed faster in the markets that they operate in. www.insightssuccess.in

Tech-driven Customer Engagement

fter numerous disruptions due to COVID-19 and deliberations on how to normalize the situation, consumer concerns, and operational challenges continue to persist. In such a scenario, brands are revamping customer experience and other parameters to enhance their connection with the customers in order to cater to their needs. In a crisis, the support and services provided by a company can do wonders for the trust and loyalty that the brand has among its customers. The time is ripe for business leaders to take it upon themselves to identify and adapt to the current and future demands, as preferences have changed due to the pandemic. Processes, costs, and approaches that worked in the past will now become obsolete and technology is going to play a key role in business operations. There are certain fundamental changes that one can make to business processes and help develop a customer-centric brand strategy even in a labour heavy industry such as construction and home renovation. • Caring about customers: During a crisis, customers need greater support in terms of information and guidance through the various stages of their journey with the brand. This becomes even more critical when they are with a lengthy, high-value proposition such as the construction of a house. Modern construction companies are undertaking a lot of technology-based innovations and creating new features to streamline projects and address client concerns. For instance, there are home construction and development companies which have integrated with technology to enhance customer experience. • Information sharing: In this era of digital communication, there is no compulsion for customers to be physically present for updates or to communicate with a brand. The entire designing and construction planning is done virtually and the designs, 3-D renderings of the proposed building as well as project development status can be shared via digital tools.
until recent years. However, things are now bound to change with the entry of technology-driven home construction start-ups which have rapidly earned a name in the market through their innovative and customer-centric practices. They facilitate digital planning, cost estimation, project paperwork, contracting, and various other processes digitally thereby saving time and effort. This makes construction a seamless and hassle-free experience for homeowners. • Transparency: Unorganized home construction operators have been quite a challenge for homeowners due to factors such as lack of transparency and timely communication. Quite often there are budget over-runs due to excessive material consumption or labour costs as the projects linger beyond estimated timelines. There is no accountability of materials and homeowners need to personally be present at the construction site to monitor. However, technologydriven construction platforms create a near accurate cost, time, and material consumption estimates and keep the clients in the loop. This ensures timely completion of the project and precise cost estimation. • Simplification of processes: Legal compliances, paperwork, utility connections, payments, and various other processes that make homeowners run from pillar to post are being digitized today. Customers can therefore undertake documentation digitally and make payments online. Focusing on customer needs and providing solutions that can help reform a traditional industry like home construction in improving customer experience is the way forward. In a pandemic situation like today, these steps can enable consumers to safely order and receive services as per their preference without needing to repeatedly venture outside the safety of their homes. Customer-centric digital transformation is the future and companies that adapt to this new normal will find greater market relevance in the years ahead!
• Innovation: The Indian home construction industry has traditionally been an unorganized sector. While there are many entities in the real-estate sector, the small- scale house construction sector didn’t see such corporate consolidation www.insightssuccess.in
