the thatch The known history of this site starts long ago with St Endelienta, daughter of King Brychan of Brycheiniog (Brecon, South Wales). She came across the Bristol Channel to Croyde in the latter part of the fifth century to spread the teachings of Celtic Christianity to the pre-Saxon people living here at the time. Reputedly the god-daughter of King Arthur she became a most revered lady and monks later established a Priory here to honour her. The area gained religious importance due to the “Holy or Lady Well” that Endelienta blessed and this became a site of pilgrimage through the middle ages. Monks living at the Priory would have had to produce their own food and drink and the construction of the Thatched Barn was probably undertaken for them to store farm implements and produce, as well as to brew beer and no doubt to consume a little too - away from the watchful eyes of the Prior. Today the Thatched Barn Inn, known locally as the Thatch is one of the most popular Inns in the West-country; with a world-wide reputation for fine ales, wines and good wholesome food served in a friendly atmosphere of warm hospitality. Family owned and managed since 1985 we are now celebrating twenty five great years involvement with this special pub. There have been many changes and improvements over that time with the addition of Billy Budds next door and more recently with the acquisition of The Priory where everything started long ago. We are very proud to be part of this long history and we welcome you to The Thatch ~ Croyde's Famous Freehouse.
food Our policy is to use locally sourced products and ingredients wherever possible. We source our beef from local Westcountry suppliers. Fresh fish comes from Westcountry suppliers with a policy of sustainability. The eggs are free range and our milk is from local farms. We are proud of our delicious food and we appreciate the confidence you have put in us by choosing to eat here. If you feel that we have let you down in any way please ask to speak to a manager. Cosy Rooms from £30 per person We now offer lovely Bed & Breakfast in seventeen cosy rooms situated under the Thatch and at our three other locations within a few steps of the front door. Its the perfect base for your visit to Croyde; and with rooms ranging from Standard to Superior there is something for everyone. Rooms at Billy Budds are accessed through the lovely beer garden that links the two pubs together; all have been recently refurbished. Crosscombe Cottage is located just over the road from the Thatch and benefits from being on the ground floor with parking right outside. Lastly the old Priory has recently been restored to a high standard and offers four Superior rooms quietly tucked away behind Crosscombe.
