WELCOME

CELEBRATE Inspirato CEO Brent Handler, the Handler family, and friends ring in the New Year on Inspirato’s New Year’s Eve cruise.

nathan hindman

THE THRILL OF A NEW EXPERIENCE ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING aspects of travel is the chance to experience something new. Trying something novel—such as scuba diving for the first time or flying in a seaplane to a remote island—brings a thrill that often stays with us long after we’ve returned home. In the past year, I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to travel with Inspirato to Paris, San Diego, and Los Cabos, to name just a few. My family and I also rung in 2019 on an Inspirato Only New Year’s Eve Caribbean Cruise. Celebrating the New Year with a spectacular fireworks show over St. Barts is a memory I won’t soon forget. As our club has grown, we’re thrilled to give Inspirato members exciting new ways to make memories in the world’s most extraordinary places, whether that means embarking on a one-of-a-kind Inspirato Only experience, staying in an Inspirato Collection home or hotel, or setting off on a completely customized Bespoke trip. You’ll find plenty of vacation inspiration in the pages of this magazine, our first-ever issue dedicated to the pursuit of adventure and experiential travel.

INSPIRATO.COM

Follow along as we explore five national park adventures not to be missed (p. 60), share authentic recipes from classic Southern eateries (p. 66), and explore how Inspirato makes it easy to enjoy authentic cultural experiences in countries like Zambia, Peru, and Italy (p. 50). Elsewhere, learn about the world’s emerging wine regions (p. 28), see why Inspirato Only cruises offer a boutique luxury experience like no other (p. 34), and choose your next adventure from our list of the top 19 must-see destinations for 2019 (p. 22). Wherever you vacation this year, I hope you get to experience the thrill of trying something new and fully immersing yourself in a destination. It’s one of life’s great joys. NEW YEAR’S CRUISE THROUGH THE CARIBBEAN ST. MARTIN TO ST. BARTS DECEMBER 2018

T

INSPIRATO MAGAZINE | SUMMER/FALL 2019

nathan hindman

his winter, Inspirato hosted 105 members and their guests for a bucketlist celebration to ring in the New Year: a megayacht cruise through the Caribbean. Embarking from Marigot on St. Martin aboard the award-winning SeaDream II, the cruise wound its way through four different territories over the course of a week, each with its own adventures: rum-tasting on St. Kitts, diving on Jost Van Dyke, a caviar and champagne splash on Virgin Gorda, and a trip to a secluded beach on St. Barts among them. A few members even got scuba certified on the trip. The cruise culminated in an incredible New Year’s celebration on the roof of the yacht in St. Barts, part of a two-night stay on the island. And though the cruise was a chance to ring in the start of 2019, a few members took the opportunity to celebrate occasions of their own: Two members celebrated their 50th birthdays on the cruise, and a couple renewed their wedding vows—complete with a friend who had become an ordained minister for the event—on Jost Van Dyke. The cruise provided a special opportunity for members from across the country to get to know one another. “We have members who met (on cruises) who have already booked future cruises together. It’s the other members who make the experiences and define that aspect of the club—we just provide the setting,” said Inspirato Experiences Lead Molly Jones. “Every time we do disembarkation there are a lot of hugs, and a lot of ‘Can’t wait to see you guys again.’”

FAMILY DAY AT THE ROCKIES

DENVER, COLORADO APRIL 2019

O

n a balmy spring evening, Inspirato members were treated to suite seats for the opening weekend of the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field in downtown Denver. A group of members and their guests enjoyed snacks and beverages at the first base line as a gold-hued sunset streaked the sky overhead. The annual family-friendly event provides an opportunity for Denver-area Inspirato members to meet, mingle, and make new friends. Among the highlights was a visit from the Rockies’ mascot, Dinger the Dinosaur—so named for the multitude of dinosaur bones that were found during the construction of Coors Field—who snapped photos with the kids. “Opening weekend is always a sure sign that spring has arrived,” said Inspirato Events and Experiences Lead Elizabeth Settambrino, who planned the outing, “and there’s no better way to celebrate spring than a night at the ballpark.” Inspirato also puts on an opening weekend event for the San Francisco Giants.

ver two days in April, Inspirato members from the Houston area were treated to complimentary cooking classes at the home of Chef Marcia Smart, a cooking teacher, recipe developer, and food writer. After arriving at Smart’s home, members were gifted an Inspirato apron and taken through some knife demos and tips to prepare for the class ahead. Members volunteered for the recipes they wanted to make, choosing from a variety of tasty offerings, including ciabatta bread with pesto, prosciutto, and goat cheese; sheet panroasted Arctic char with green beans and cherry tomatoes; and a berry-and-prosecco dessert with crushed meringue cookies and whipped cream. Guests were even able to pick their own herbs and lettuce from Smart’s garden. “I love the small, hands-on, and experiential types of events because members get to know one another and share their most memorable travel stories,” said Inspirato Events and Experiences Lead Lauren Marroquin, who planned the classes.

On rainy Derby Day, members were sitting pretty in Millionaires Row, where they enjoyed covered outdoor access for closer viewing of the excitement. uring a long weekend in May, eight Inspirato members gathered in the Windy City for an Inspirato Only epicurean experience. The highlight of the Chicago Michelin-Star Weekend was undoubtedly a visit to Alinea, the city’s only Michelin 3-star restaurant, where a theatrical and experimental 12-course tasting menu awaited. “Alinea is what most of our members came on the trip for,” said Inspirato Events and Experiences Lead Lauren Marroquin. “They had high expectations for the restaurant, and it completely surpassed them.” The group also dined at Michelin-starred eateries Smyth and EL ideas; hand-rolled truffles at Vosges Chocolate Factory; and cruised the Chicago River aboard a private yacht. The Thompson Chicago, located on the Magnificent Mile, made for a sophisticated home base. The program is set to run again in August 2019.

CORBETT’S TAKE

Inspirato’s Co-Founder Brian Corbett shares some of his favorite summer adventures with the club.

MAGNIFICENT CREATURES

The Corbetts saw an array of wildlife, including this cheetah and giraffe, on a South African safari with Inspirato.

SMILE WITH THE RISING SUN

ADVENTURE MEANS something different to every traveler. For some, boarding an international flight is an adventure. For others, an adventure means bungee jumping or landing on a glacier in a helicopter in New Zealand. Tasting exotic foods can even be adventurous, especially for kids. For my family, adventure means active days of intense exploration, paired with great meals and comfortable nights. Whether we’re embarking on an Inspirato Only cruise or staying in an Inspirato mountain home or beachfront hotel, we travel with the confidence of knowing that while we might push the envelope a little bit, we’ll also be taken care of, no matter what. Inspirato homes can be incredible platforms for shared adventures. My wife, two sons, good friends, and I just got back from Costa Rica, where we spent a week zip lining, tubing, boating, surfing—you name it, we did it. Each evening, we’d return to Cumbre del Rey, our Inspirato home, where the kids would swim in the pool while we adults enjoyed sunset cocktails. That’s the beauty of traveling with Inspirato—your trip planners ensure that your itinerary always matches your personal sense of adventure. They listen and then provide insider access to the places, people, and activities that would be hard for members to find on their own, especially in such an efficient manner. Two of my other favorite summertime adventures at Inspirato are cruises and safaris. Each summer, we launch cruises around the world, from the Inside Passage of Alaska to the coast of Spain paired with Morocco and Portugal.

top: greyson corbett; below: rachel corbett

These extended vacations usually include at least a week on the ship, as well as optional pre- and post-trip extensions. Our members typically love to explore a little bit before and after. One of my favorite moments happened on Father’s Day a few years ago, on a South African safari with Inspirato. Our guide surprised us with an early morning game drive that ended with a hike to a mountain peak, where my wife and I sat between our two sons and watched the sun rise over the plains and heard lions roar in the distance. It was an incredibly peaceful morning and capstone of a life-changing adventure. Pushing yourself outside your comfort zone on an adventure not only leads to tighter bonds, but more enriching experiences. Those are the memories that tend to last.

INSPIRATION | BEFORE YOU GO

BALI Rich in culture, spirituality, and joy, the island of Bali is ideal for travelers seeking more than just a beautiful beach. But rest assured— there are plenty of beautiful beaches. Not to mention ancient holy temples, impossibly green terraced rice paddies, active volcanoes, charming people, and delicious food. Take a look into the otherworldliness that is Bali with these recommendations. READ: BALI DAZE by Cat Wheeler

Jump off the beaten tourist path with expat author Cat Wheeler as she takes you along on her journey of putting down roots in Ubud. A long-term resident, Wheeler paints a complex, beguiling, and often humorous picture of Bali that is rarely seen. Read this if you value authentic cultural experiences. READ: FRAGRANT RICE:

Mexico is much more than beaches—it’s ancient archaeological gems, cobblestoned colonial towns, 16th-century cathedrals, and open-air markets. From eclectic Mexico City to magical San Miguel de Allende, the romantic highlands of central Mexico have a colorful nostalgia that has inspired many books and films into fruition.

by Judith Gille

by Johanna Angermeyer

This real-life story of one Seattle family’s impulsive purchase of a hot-pink hacienda in San Miguel de Allende provides a compassionate look into the relationship between two country’s cultures. Gille’s account of how her family becomes part of the local community in San Miguel is filled with insight, history, and charm.

It’s hard to believe this romantic tale is a true story. Author Johanna Angermeyer originally went to the Galapágos in an attempt to solve the mystery of her father’s tragic death. Her experience, though packed with danger, was so filled with joy and wonder that it led her to dream of living in the islands, just like her father.

WATCH: EAT PRAY LOVE Starring Julia Roberts, this movie showcases Bali’s most amazing landscapes, from the pristine Padang Padang Beach to breathtaking rice terraces and the mystic monkey forest in Ubud. And if you’re interested in visiting a traditional healer while in Bali, this film gives some insight into that, too. Watch this on the plane to Bali.

The volcanic islands of the Galápagos are an ecological wonderland home to an array of wildlife not found anywhere else. The birthplace of Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution, this World Heritage Site still feels somewhat unspoiled by humans. QUESTIONS ANSWERED | T HE P E R F EC T S TAY

INSPIRATO INSIDER

Inspirato destination experts share their tips for a memorable trip—and favorite hidden gems.

Silvana Ek

Parago Bothe

MALLORCA, SPAIN

ROSEMARY BEACH, FLORIDA

Balearic Islands

Eden Gardens

FAVORITE HIDDEN GEM:

Eden Gardens—a beautiful park with a historic colonial mansion and moss-draped live oaks. It’s a great place to get away from crowds and a great alternative to a beach activity.

MOST RECOMMENDED ACTIVITY:

Definitely a bonfire on the beach. We set up beach chairs surrounding a fire pit and put tiki torches all around. Guests mingle with drinks by the water while watching the sunset, then enjoy a shrimp boil prepared right there at the beach. The rest of the evening is enjoyed by the fire, eating s’mores. It’s a great activity for families and adult groups alike.

MOST RECOMMENDED ACTIVITY:

Charter a boat for a day and see the island while sailing on the pristine turquoise waters of the Balearic Islands. Guests can snorkel and swim in a secluded cove, then have an exquisite lunch at a local seafood restaurant overlooking the water.

BEST WAY TO GET A TASTE OF THE LOCAL LIFE:

Visit the vineyards, enjoy tasting some of the best wines produced on this rare Mediterranean soil, and dine in the excellent local restaurants, which use fresh local products to produce the most amazing flavors in an atmosphere of charm and excellent service.

BEST WAY TO GET A TASTE OF THE LOCAL LIFE:

Spend time on Grayton Beach, where you are allowed to drive right on the sand. You have to be a resident to get a permit, so it’s very much a locals’ beach. After spending the day in the sun on Grayton Beach paddleboarding, surfing, kayaking, and socializing, you can head to Red Bar or Chiringo for happy hour.

TOP INTERACTION WITH GUESTS:

Truffle hunting with dogs in the countryside or shopping in the old town center of the city of Palma. FAVORITE HIDDEN GEM:

Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center and Museum, where you can walk back in time viewing artifacts from America’s first peoples. Just a 10-minute walk from the museum, you’ll find the amazing Escalante Pueblo ruins. The museum is one hour and 20 minutes south of Telluride and is on the way to Mesa Verde (which is just two hours from Telluride).

The St. John Petroglyphs—a collection of mysterious stone carvings thought to be connected to the Taino tribe, St. John’s original inhabitants. The carvings are believed to be representations of spiritual beings and have become the symbol of St. John, recognized throughout the surrounding islands.

MOST RECOMMENDED ACTIVITY:

Taking a helicopter tour to a small private island (there are dozens of options) where you can be dropped off for a halfor full-day adventure. Guests can choose to have lunch catered or to pack their own picnic. It’s a spectacular way to take in the beauty of the islands and turquoise water from above, as well as from the shores of an untouched beach.

MOST RECOMMENDED ACTIVITY:

Hiking the nearby mountain or river trails in the summer and cross-country skiing in the winter. Both activities give you the chance to slow down and experience the pristine beauty of the Telluride area away from any crowds.

BEST WAY TO GET A TASTE OF THE LOCAL LIFE:

Experiencing the Telluride Mountain Film Festival that takes place annually during Labor Day weekend. Locals, international writers, directors, artists, and musicians come together for an amazing festival event. In the wintertime, it would be checking out live music at the Sheridan Opera House and Club Red.

BEST WAY TO GET A TASTE OF THE LOCAL LIFE:

Carnival season is a huge part of Caribbean culture, and St. John is no exception. The St. John Festival is the island’s signature, monthlong celebration that takes place each year in June and July, showcasing local dance troupes and steel pan bands, colorful displays of arts and crafts, and an exciting mix of local foods.

TOP INTERACTION WITH GUESTS:

Taking families on my mushroom and geology tours in the summer. Nothing beats walking guests into a forest where they are unable to connect to their devices and seeing them really connect with nature. It’s especially rewarding with kids because I feel like I am helping them cultivate an interest in the outdoors and caring for the planet.

Turks and Caicos

LATIN AMERICA & THE CARIBBEAN ABACO, BAHAMAS

For the intrepid, the Galápagos Islands are a can’t-miss destination. This storied archipelago, a subject of fascination since Charles Darwin’s famous expedition in the 1830s, is one of the most richly biodiverse regions in the world. Superb wildlife-viewing—from aquatic iguanas to playful penguins—is the top draw of these isolated islands off the coast of Ecuador, and some of the best diving in the world can be found off their shores.

CARTAGENA, COLOMBIA

The pace of life slows way down in the Turks and Caicos Islands, hidden at the southern tip of the Bahamian Archipelago. This destination is off the radar of many travelers, making it an exclusively luxurious getaway. Home to the third-largest coral reef system, you’re sure to spot marine life—such as rays, turtles, dolphins, or even migrating humpback whales— while snorkeling or diving in the turquoise waters. Islandhop among the 40 islands and cays to find enchanting deserted beaches, traces of colonial relics, and charming seaside bars.

This walled colonial city by the sea feels like an openair museum—its winding cobblestone streets leading you to bougainvilleacovered plazas, monumental churches, and Old World palaces. Cartagena’s Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the city’s main attraction, showcasing beautifully preserved colonial architecture. It’s the perfect city to explore leisurely by foot, stopping at cafés along the way for arepas and fresh fruit smoothies, or ceviche and mojitos.

SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE, MEXICO

Named the “World’s Best City” two years in a row by Travel + Leisure, San Miguel de Allende showcases an intriguing side of Mexico many tourists have never experienced. Wander the 500-year-old city down cobblestone lanes—still traversed by the occasional burro lugging milk and firewood—past colorful stucco structures, art galleries, jazz clubs, and bistros. Try elote (grilled corn) on a shady bench in El Jardin, the city’s central plaza.

TORTOLA, BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS

This Caribbean gem is the largest of the British Virgin Islands and is regarded as the sailing capital of the world. Relax on Tortola’s white-sand beaches, go snorkeling at the site of the wreck of the RMS Rhone, and shop in Road Town, BVI’s capital. Plus, a quick ferry ride to neighboring Virgin Gorda offers a chance to see the famed Baths, volcanic rock outcroppings creating tranquil grottoes and tide pools.

UNITED STATES COASTAL MAINE

With even more miles of coastline than California—3,478, to be precise—the northernmost state in the contiguous U.S. offers loads of coastal adventures from hiking and biking to fishing and canoeing. Take in the historic lighthouses dotting the coast, and stop over in Portland, Maine’s capital, to enjoy fresh lobster—or even try catching your own. And swing by the shops of the historic Old Port District, full of nautical delights.

DUNTON HOT SPRINGS, COLORADO

Originally a mining town in the 1800s, Dunton Hot Springs has been described as a perfectly restored ghost town. Rustic yet luxurious, this hideaway in the San Juan Mountains is an all-inclusive retreat boasting nonsulfurous hot springs, a spa, and world-class sustainable dining. Right outside your cabin doors is a vast wilderness with opportunities for hiking, biking, horseback riding, heli-skiing, snowshoeing, climbing, and more. It’s an authentic Wild West experience with just the right amount of decadence.

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON

The largest city in the Pacific Northwest, Seattle boasts a thriving culinary scene and ample outdoor adventures only a short drive away. Hike beautiful Mt. Rainier National Park or kayak with orcas in the nearby San Juan Islands. Music lovers will appreciate the chance to see the birthplace of grunge—be sure to visit the Museum of Pop Culture, the second floor of which is entirely devoted to Nirvana and the rise of the influential genre.

SEDONA, ARIZONA

Sedona’s official tourism tagline is “The Most Beautiful City on Earth,” and we’re inclined to agree. With its sweeping views of grand red rock framing endless valleys of green pine, this small Arizona city is the perfect retreat for those in need of art, outdoor recreation, spas, and plentiful yoga classes. Be sure to catch a sunset in Red Rock National Park.

STOWE, VERMONT

When it comes to East Coast skiing, Stowe and its mountain resort are the premier spot for incredible runs. But this charming New England town has more to offer than just powder. Located at the base of Mount Mansfield, the highest peak in Vermont, this town boasts breweries, spas, and scenic trails. Bike down the Stowe Recreation Path or head to nearby Burlington for a tasty tour of Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Factory.

JUNEAU, ALASKA

The small Alaskan city of Juneau has an interesting claim to fame—it’s one of only two state capitals unconnected by road to the North American mainland (the other being Honolulu, Hawaii). But its isolation is exactly what makes it so appealing. Juneau is a popular cruise ship port surrounded by the Coast Mountains. If you’re a history buff, you’ll likely fall in love with the “City of 100 Spires.” Architectural wonders, sprawling green parks, and romance abound in this well-preserved medieval city. Prague will sweep you up in Old World charm while you enjoy modern attractions such as acclaimed restaurants, art museums, and cutting-edge shops speckled amid cobblestone streets and towering church spires.

LAKE COMO, ITALY

Like many of its eastern European neighbors, Montenegro keeps a relatively low profile. Probably not for long. Go to Sveti Stefan for its pinch-me scenery—sandy beaches that give way to the bathwater of the Adriatic Sea—and stay for the fresh seafood and rich heritage. Sveti Stefan, a 15thcentury village plopped on a peninsula just off the coast, offers an enticing mix of cobbled lanes, red-tiled roofs, and open-air piazzas.

The glittering crown jewel in northern Italy’s Lakes District is undoubtedly Lake Como. Tucked in the shadow of the snow-dusted Italian Alps, this serene body of water is a dreamy retreat with plenty of opportunity for adventure like rock climbing, vertical sailing, and boating. Make like the locals do and find a sunny patio in one of the charming lakefront towns to sip an Aperol Spritz and watch classic, wooden Riva yachts zip across the lake.

T

here’s something especially beautiful about exploring wineries in lesser-known regions. In recent years, extreme weather conditions such as fire and hail have challenged viticultural regions around the world, and turned unlikely locations into hotspots for winemaking. Here we examine four up-and-coming wine regions around the world that merit a visit, not just for the noteworthy wine they produce, but also for their picturesque settings, unique dining scenes, and the stories behind their once-unconventional wine cultures.

WAIHEKE ISLAND, NEW ZEALAND

A WAY OF LIFE

(left) Waiheke Island is home to familyrun vineyards where mainly French varieties flourish on clay soils. (right) Boutique wineries carefully sort grapes by hand before fermentation to ensure top quality.

Car-carrying ferries depart often from Auckland, taking visitors to this breathtaking vineyard-dotted island where boutique wineries and farm-to-table restaurants abound. The island is worthy of an overnight trip, or you may want to stay longer to fully absorb the relaxed culture. Te Motu Vineyard, focused on low-yielding vines and Bordeaux-style wines, is an emblem of the artisanal nature of winemaking on Waiheke. “There are so many things to love about this island. It’s a short boat ride from our biggest city, but it feels like another country,” said Te Motu’s manager Rory Dunleavy, whose father and uncle planted vines on Waiheke in the 1980s. They had stumbled into the Onetangi Valley’s very special terroir, where lower rainfalls and slightly warmer temperatures combine with rich clay soils, all ideal for producing ripe, healthy grapes. Waiheke celebrates winemaking as a way of life. “There’s a great sense of community amongst the vineyards and

29

winemakers,” Dunleavy said. “Finishing up a long hot day at the vineyard with a swim five minutes down the road at Onetangi beach makes for a pretty great work-life balance. Even when it’s busy through summer, it’s bloody hard not to relax here.” There’s an award-winning restaurant at Te Motu—don’t miss the local Waiheke oysters. You’ll also want to visit Stonyridge Vineyard, which specializes in organic Cabernet blends made following French traditions, and is nestled in a valley within an olive grove. Stonyridge offers healthy and fresh dining with a view at the relaxed Veranda Café, and their tasting lounge is open for trying wines and nibbling on olives. And don’t miss the recently renovated Tantalus Estate, featuring an impressive cellar where Bordeaux-style, rosé, and sparkling wines are aged. Tantalus also makes beer and has a light-filled restaurant emphasizing seasonality; other wineries are located within walking distance if you’re eager to explore further.

of Samuel Tinon, a Frenchman making award-winning wine in a cave without electricity. Also look to try wines by Zoltán Demeter, a former employee of Napa Valley’s Stags’ Leap who is making single-vineyard wines considered “first growth.” Visit Tokaj in early September to check out the annual Furmint Festival. For dining in Tokaj town, look to LaBor Bistro, which serves shareable small plates, as well as platters of Hungarian cheeses and the famed local mangalitsa pork. Gusteau offers beautifully composed dishes that reinterpret Hungarian classics and a highly acclaimed wine list in an elegant setting; the restaurant can also organize a bike tour among the Tokaj vineyards. If you fall in love with the (very good) cheeses in Hungary, you can stop by Zempléni Sajt creamery in Tarcal for a tasting.

RÍAS BAIXAS, SPAIN

TOKAJ, HUNGARY

Come to this corner of Northeastern Hungary to try dry wines, or regional icons like the sweet wine Aszù, which was lauded by royalty as early as the 16th century, and rare, limitedproduction Essencia wines. Tokaj wines are made principally with the grape Furmint, almost exclusively grown in this region. Tokaj is located a pleasant 2.5-hour drive or train ride from Budapest. En route, you’ll want to stop in the historic town of Eger, which was the farthest west that the Turks established rule—you can visit the 16th-century castle where the Hungarian army once defeated the encroaching Turks, and there are Turkish baths as well. It’s a place so steeped in history—including a very complicated period during the Yugoslav era, when agriculture and winemaking were collectivized—that it was awarded UNESCO Heritage status in 2001, but today’s Tokaj winemakers are definitely staking their claim in the current global wine scene. Tokaj’s cellars are often quite old, making them fascinating to tour and learn about the different, somewhat complicated, winemaking styles. It’s worth visiting the long-standing estate Dizsnókö, and the newer Royal Tokaji is a benchmark producer. You can try to get a tasting at the quirky boutique enterprise INSPIRATO MAGAZINE | SUMMER/FALL 2019

The lovely and underappreciated white grape Albariño is the focus of this gorgeous coastal region in Galicia, Northern Spain. While you may have tried Albariño in that spritzy summer wine Vinho Verde from neighboring Portugal, the boutique producers of Rías Baixas treat this indigenous variety with much greater seriousness. There are five subregions in the Rías Baixas D.O. (designated origin), and they all offer slightly different wine styles and terroirs. Throughout the sprawling region of Rías Baixas, you can find Albariño wine made sparkling, or light and fresh, or matured in oak, and even as a dessert wine made with botrytised grapes. Trying a local white wine alongside freshly caught Atlantic seafood, it’s easy to understand why the region has focused heavily on growing Albariño since the late 1980s—the wine’s aromatic, bright, lemony character pairs delightfully well alongside grilled octopus or steamed clams and scallops. Seafood is truly a way of life here. In the neighborhood of San Tomé, low tides see women known as mariscadoras coming out to the shoals with buckets to dig for shellfish by hand. Wineries in this region are often family-run and might not have official tasting rooms, so be sure to make an appointment. Some of the oldest wineries are housed in pazos, historic estates going back several centuries—two of note to visit are Pazo San Mauro and Pazo de Señorans. One

acclaimed winery worth checking out is Adega Pedralonga, a family-run biodynamically farmed estate founded in 1997. Pedralonga shows how Albariño can be vinified from a terroirfocused approach, resulting in wines that display the mineral and saline depth of the region’s granite soils. “As a huge fan of Albariño, I loved visiting Rías Baixas,” said Rick Fisher, the education director of the Washington D.C.-based Wine Scholar Guild and a self-professed Spanish wine scholar. “The region has breathtaking scenery, and it’s amazing to see how tradition and modernity work hand in hand to grow and harvest the grapes here.” The region offers traditional options like tapas and seafood eateries, and avant-garde dining, most notably the Michelin Guide-noted Casa Solla. The famed cathedral of Santiago de Compostela is a short train ride or drive from the northernmost part of Rías Baixas. There’s also a small but interesting Ethnographic Museum of Wine to visit in the charming town of Cambados, which is also the site of the annual Festival of Albariño, held the first week of the steamy month of August. Tasting rooms nestled into Red Rock countryside leave a remarkable impression in this unlikely spot for vineyards. One of Arizona’s three winegrowing regions, Verde Valley boasts an ideal climate for grapes thanks to a roaring river and high desert terrain, and offers visitors exciting and quirky boutique wineries with tasting rooms. Verde Valley is located about two hours from Phoenix and accessible via the Verde Canyon Railway. More adventurous travelers can kayak directly to some wineries. Take the Verde Valley Wine Trail to discover more than 20 wineries over the course of one to four days; it begins in beautiful Sedona and heads north, culminating in Jerome, where former Tool vocalist Maynard James Keenan makes small-batch cult wines under the Caduceus label. You can also opt to follow the Painted Valley Wine Trail, which features dozens of unique barrels hand-painted by local artists showcased in wineries. A few wineries not to miss: Burning Tree Cellars, Alcantara Vineyards, Page Springs Cellars, Oak Creek Vineyards, and Javelina Leap Vineyard. Caduceus founder Keenan is proud of his viticultural home base. “Arizona’s wine industry is poised to overtake several wine-producing states in economic impacts,” he said. “With $3.3 billion in measurable impacts in 2015, and nearly a half million in state tax generation, this can no longer be considered a ‘cottage’ or ‘boutique’ industry.”  INSPIRATO MAGAZINE | SUMMER/FALL 2019

YOU’VE NEVER CRUISED LIKE THIS BEFORE Forget stuffy, traditional cruises. See why Inspirato’s lineup of luxurious boutique cruises are a world apart. BY JORIE LARSEN

W

hen Inspirato member Lacey J. set out on her first Inspirato cruise, she wasn’t sure what to expect. She’d cruised in the past on larger ships but was curious to see how Inspirato did it differently. “The first one we did (with Inspirato) was Istanbul to Athens. I was kind of newer to cruising,” she said, “and I was really skeptical about it. Then we did it, and I loved it! “We love Inspirato, and we’ve traveled a lot with them, and the cruises are definitely the favorite thing that we’ve done,” said Lacey, who’s now gone on three Inspirato Only cruises (and has a fourth booked for 2020). In 2019, Inspirato Only experiences include seven cruises, which are sailing to diverse locales around the globe ranging from Europe’s Danube River to the Galápagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador. The 2020 Inspirato Only lineup promises to be just as enthralling, with six cruises zipping along to far-off places including Antarctica, Asia, the Mediterranean, the Rhine River, and more. ADVENTURE | C R UI SING

If you’ve never cruised with Inspirato before, here are three reasons why sailing with Inspirato Only offers a uniquely luxurious experience.

ONLY FOR MEMBERS AND THEIR GUESTS

The program’s name drives the message home; the only other passengers on nearly all Inspirato Only cruises are members and their guests, which means sailing alongside an active, youthful, and spirited group of people. Some of the benefits to sailing on a members-only cruise are practical in nature. Inspirato gets to control the dress code aboard the ship, which means doing away with stuffy formal nights like traditional cruises, where passengers are required to wear tuxedos and long evening gowns. Most importantly, sailing alongside fellow club members helps foster a sense of camaraderie—on the ship, during shore excursions, and back at home once the cruise is over. Passengers form lasting friendships with fellow members from all over the world. INSPIRATO.COM

Inspirato’s cruise planners agree that the members-only mantra helps bring the club to life. “One of the biggest privileges is getting to witness what’s at the heart of the club—members connecting with other like-minded members, being able to meet friends that have the same goals and travel desires as you do,” said Molly Jones, experiences lead at Inspirato. “We see members that meet on one cruise sail together on another, and then book an Inspirato home together later on. “It’s certainly the best part of our job, seeing those relationships come to fruition,” said Jones.

CUSTOM ITINERARIES HANDCRAFTED BY EXPERTS

Behind each Inspirato Only cruise is a team of experts—led by Brian Corbett, Inspirato’s co-founder—who meticulously craft cruise itineraries. Corbett personally oversees the planning of every cruise and vets each port of call to ensure that it meets Inspirato’s vision for the experience. “When I’m out evaluating new experiences for Inspirato Only, I consider every detail

from our members’ perspectives,” said Corbett. Inspirato secures insider access members would be hardpressed to find elsewhere. During the upcoming Athens to Athens Cruise 2020, Inspirato received special permission from the Greek government to dock on Milos—a tiny isle that Condé Nast Traveler called the “secret Greek island of the summer.” Milos generally doesn’t permit cruise ships to visit. “We know our members have busy lives and vacation time is precious, so we appreciate efficiency in our itineraries and elegantly craft voyages that blend the must-see highlights along with unexpected treats that members can be among the first of their friends to experience,” said Corbett. Many cruises are also planned around the itineraries of large cruise liners, so members can enjoy ports nearly to themselves. For example, the Alaska Cruise 2019 includes stops in charming port towns such as Ketchikan, Skagway, and Sitka—all planned around the big cruises so club members can enjoy a more peaceful and authentic experience in these seaside Alaskan gems. Nearly every cruise also comes with optional pre- and posttrip excursions for members who wish to immerse themselves in a destination before or after their cruise. Inspirato arranges the hotel accommodations and detailed itineraries so members never have to lift a finger. One of the features of the Seine River Cruise pre-cruise program in fall 2019 is a private evening at the famous Palace of Versailles, after the gates have closed to the general public. Twenty-four Inspirato members and their guests will have the opportunity to enjoy a multicourse feast fit for royalty within the opulent palace. Sometimes, it’s about what’s not on the itinerary—in other words, the small surprises designed to delight guests. “We really pride ourselves on crafting a well-choreographed experience, so members know exactly what they’re getting into. Yet we also weave in little unexpected surprises throughout,” said Corbett. These little touches might be inviting world-class guest speakers, such as a Cuban historian or a European sommelier, to come aboard and interact with members and their guests.

36

In the Caribbean, Inspirato puts together a “caviar splash”—a tray of caviar and champagne served from a floating surfboard to members in the warm Caribbean Sea.

BOUTIQUE LUXURY SHIPS WITH FIVE-STAR AMENITIES

Inspirato sails on the highest caliber of boutique luxury ships outfitted with five-star amenities, including fine dining restaurants, spas, fitness centers, and pools. All are staffed with the industry’s most seasoned professionals—for example, on the SeaDream and Silversea vessels, the staff-to-passenger ratios are nearly 1:1. “We work with ships that have the highest staff-to-guest ratios in the industry and are recognized for service that goes above and beyond,” said Kylee Glaser, experiences director at Inspirato. The smaller ships that Inspirato Only favors can dock where the large cruise liners often cannot. Petite ships allow Inspirato passengers to visit more intimate ports and avoid the hustle and bustle of the large cruise docks. This is especially true in the Mediterranean Sea, where Inspirato Only regularly charters cruises, such as the Mediterranean Yacht Cruise in October 2019 and the Athens to Athens Cruise in July 2020. Inspirato Only cruises are also all-inclusive, so members are free to relax and enjoy time together without ever worrying about a bill. Custom shore excursions are often included with the price. One such shore excursion during the Danube River Cruise is a visit to a Viennese palace where members will be treated to a private performance of classical music composed by Mozart. Some of the vessels are designed to keep members comfortable even as they sail into the world’s most remote landscapes. One such vessel, the National Geographic Orion, will host members during the Antarctica Expedition 2020, a sold-out experience that Inspirato runs every two to four years. Inspirato members sail alongside a team of expert guides, experienced land and sea naturalists, and a National Geographic photographer, who lead engaging discussions along the voyage. “We make it possible to have confidence checking off those bucket-list items you never thought you could,” said Jones. 

elfie stick, step aside. The new trend in creating unforgettable travel pics is the personal travel photographer, who documents your trip and delivers gorgeous, high-quality photos—without you having to snap a shot. Societal norms are rapidly shifting around hiring a travel photographer; it’s now considered akin to hiring a photographer for a wedding. Fueling the trend: the growing recognition that the travel photos a pro takes are a different order of magnitude than the ones you can snap on the fly with your phone. Admit it: You probably struggle with photo fatigue, whether it’s rooted in roping in a stranger to take a group shot, contorting for a collective selfie, or resigning yourself to be the designated documenter. While those strategies may be good enough for a Facebook post or Instagram feed, the benefit of hiring a professional means you’re guaranteed to end up with genuine, timeless keepers—photos you will actually want to blow up, frame, and treasure. If this sounds more savvy than splurgy, Flytographer (basically Airbnb for travel photographers) will connect you with a professional, fully vetted photographer in over 275 cities worldwide. Or explore a more immersive experience with a private photographer who shadows your family all day to capture an intimate—and unforgettable—day-in-the-life. Inspirato talked to both Flytographer and Casie Zalud, an independent documentary family photographer, to explain why good vacation shots are worth every penny.

INSPIRATO MAGAZINE | SUMMER/FALL 2019

According to Flytographer founder Nicole Smith, a former Microsoft executive, the personal photographer movement coincides with the rise of people recognizing the value of experiences over “stuff.” “Our clients have found the most memorable mementos are professional-quality vacation photos,” Smith said. (Enjoy the relief of calling off the search for the perfect souvenir.) She discovered this firsthand, when the idea for Flytographer arose after a trip she took with her best friend to Paris six years ago. “The photos we had taken of ourselves and the ones we had asked strangers to snap were disappointing,” she said, “so we asked a friend living in the city to take some shots. We ended up with stunning images that captured the spirit of the trip.” She founded the company in 2013—as a side project. Since then, burgeoning demand has spurred aggressive growth, and the company keeps upscaling. Flytographer offers packages that range from 30 minutes to two hours: Prices start at $250 and go up to $650, with customers receiving a complete set of digital images within five days of the meeting. “Most people opt for 60 to 90 minutes,” she said, “because it does take a little time to warm up to the camera.” The success of companies such as Flytographer suggest that our best defense against visual overload may be discrimination. “With Pinterest, Facebook, and Instagram, we’ve become a much more visual world, and in particular, there’s been an explosion of visual storytelling,” Smith said. Our devices bombard us with images in our feeds, posts, texts, and emails. INSPIRATO.COM

And we are active participants in the scrum: One estimate from InfoTrends Worldwide is that we each take roughly 10 photos a day. The antidote? Seeking out professional photographers who can take extraordinary shots of what makes travel so special. If you opt for a private photographer such as Zalud, another perk of the experience is that she will capture the moments traditionally not thought of as camera-ready. A documentary photographer, Zalud aspires to bring the unscripted intimacy of real life into the frame—the private, fleeting exchanges that define your family’s unique constellation. Zalud “stays with your family and photographs everything from the littles having Cheerios in their PJs to sleigh ride dinners, ice skating, swimming, the wee one’s first days on skis, and anything else you plan.” To put the family at ease, Zalud puts in extra effort to establish rapport. She comes over for dinner with her clients the night before the shoot, befriends the kids, and familiarizes herself with the family dynamic. She aims for the vulnerable underbelly of family life, not just the cookie-cutter highlights. Zalud speaks of her favorite photos she’s caught: a very tall father carrying his son in his ski harness as if he were a suitcase, a boy’s first triumphant cycling ascent of a steep hill, a mother falling into a river as the rest of the family fishes. “I offer this because it’s what I myself crave—someone who can capture my family from the inside.” Her full-day rate, which starts at $2,100, includes an online slideshow—a digitally edited selection of the day’s highlights set to music. Whatever option you choose, your travel milestones will include everyone in the picture. And that means a collective sigh of relief for all involved (especially the moms). “Vacation photos allow the entire family to slow down and be more present,” Zalud said. People still harbor negative preconceptions about hiring a personal photographer, chalking it up to millennial narcissism, Smith said. “But it’s so much more than that. It’s for all the big life moments, from friend getaways, solo trips, proposals, honeymoons, to golden anniversaries and family reunions.” It’s less “Insta” gratification and more about what hangs for decades on your private walls. One bonus of booking a flytographer is they double as an informal local tour guide, sharing a treasury of tips on the best things to eat, see, and do, along with the INSPIRATO.COM

Flytographer’s tips to get the most out of your travel shoot: OPTIMIZE THE LIGHT

Flytographer comes close to insisting the shoots take place during the “golden hours” of dawn or twilight—the two times a day when the light is the most flattering. Morning is particularly conducive to good shots, said Smith, because most of the time there’s nobody else there (less potential for photo bombs). “Plus, one of my favorite parts of travel is getting to see a city ‘rustle’ awake,” she said.

COORDINATE YOUR LOOK

While you don’t have to go totally matchy-matchy, you don’t want the distraction of rampant pattern conflict either. Make sure your outfits fit well and have a consistent tone, both in terms of style and color choice. Formal outfits should be paired with formal—or let a casual look

set the entire tone. For colors, complementary tones work best. Play off each other’s choices through accenting your outfit with the primary color of your partner’s or the group’s. To make the clothing easy on the eye, contrast prints and patterns with solids, so the faces become the focal point.

PUT YOUR BEST FOOT FORWARD

There’s no detail too small when it comes to portraits, but unfortunately many people overlook their shoes. Scuffed shoes really do lower the vibe, so put some thought into your footwear—the shoes make the outfit. High heels are not always a good choice, not just because of the comfort factor but because they can be awkward on cobblestones, sand, or grass.

ADAPT TO YOUR ENVIRONMENT

Explore picking up on cues from your environment. Dress for the weather, for example, wearing earthy tones during autumn’s foliage or bright colors that will pop against snow. If you are in a rainy city with a preponderance of gray, you might want to have bold touches of color that will provide texture and contrast.

GO LIGHT

Try not to carry anything with you that you wouldn’t want in the photos. Backpacks, tote bags, and even purses can disrupt the lines of the body and add unnecessary bulk. That goes for pockets too—wallets, phones, and keys create unsightly bulges that your eye will be drawn to in the photo.

places to avoid. A perk of working with a documentary family photographer, on the other hand, is the chance to capture the less obvious, quirkier nuances of family life. With both models, many clients stay in touch with the photographers and become friends. So next time you take a trip, consider giving yourself and your dear ones the royal treatment: photos that will be your most treasured family heirlooms—and legacy. The right photos help us not remember but relive the magic of a place, the trajectory of our lives, and the beauty of our fellow travelers. 

ne of life’s simple pleasures is opening a bottle of wine at the end of a long day or workweek, when surrounded by friends, or right before diving into a good book. But have you ever thought about the journey wine takes before it gets to the bottle? For Inspirato members curious about the winemaking process, a one-of-a-kind, immersive experience awaits in Sonoma: a stay at Vintner’s Cottage. Vintner’s Cottage sits on the property of a family-owned winery: Blue Rock Vineyard. Blue Rock got its start as a winery in the 1800s run by Italian immigrants. Vintner’s Cottage itself was once the site of Villa Maria winery, but that operation was shuttered during Prohibition. In 1987, Kenny and Cheryl Kahn bought the property, which became the sustainability-focused winery that it is today. “It’s a true hidden gem, tucked into a breathtaking section of Alexander Valley. The grounds have an incredible history, dating back to the mid-1800s. The vineyards are speckled with gorgeous blue serpentine rock,” said Carla Jeffries, Blue Rock’s director of hospitality. “In fact, serpentine is used in much of the landscaping throughout the estate and in the walls of the home.” Serpentine rock—so named for the group of minerals that make it up—is both the winery’s namesake and California’s state rock. It plays a distinct role in California’s plant life, with 10 percent of the state’s native flora growing on serpentine soils. Yet what makes Blue Rock truly different, Jeffries said, is that walking through its gate is like being transported to a different place and time. “Time truly seems to stand still here. We like to say our guests are hugged—figuratively and literally—by the land,

and by those of us who are its stewards,” Jeffries said. “We’re passionate about this special place—the grapes we grow, the wines we craft, and the guests we meet.” Blue Rock is also about 15 minutes north of downtown Healdsburg, a charming Sonoma County stopover with a beautiful town square, art galleries, boutiques, antique shops, and farm-to-table restaurants. Inspirato members who have stayed at the historic home—a French stone cottage reminiscent of the European countryside, boasting its own private pool and a bocce ball court—have loved the opportunity to be in the midst of the action of a working vineyard. Member Michelle T. usually travels to Napa Valley for winetasting excursions, but she and her group opted for Sonoma on their recent trip for a new experience. Michelle had high praise for the home—“French country expertly crafted with luxury amenities”—and said the entire property has an air of magic about it. Her group also loved getting the chance to sit down with Blue Rock staff to learn more about the ins and outs of winemaking. “We spent two hours with our hosts by the fireplace learning the history of the vineyard and gaining insight to the complexity of the winemaking process, starting with the soil nurturing the grapevines,” she said. Another Inspirato member, Rebecca M., chose an off-season stay at Vintner’s Cottage for her first visit to wine country, and her first trip with Inspirato. “The cottage was quaint, beautifully decorated, very comfortable—absolutely amazing,” she said. “The grounds were breathtaking, even though we stayed there (at the) end of January, first of February.” She was particularly impressed with Alicia, the Inspirato Destination Concierge in Sonoma. “Our concierge, Alicia, really went above and beyond to ensure our trip was the best. She put together the perfect itinerary of restaurants, wineries, transportation, groceries, etc.,” Rebecca said. “She even made sure we had extra firewood, fresh chocolate chip cookies daily, and a bottle of Baby Blue wine from the winery sitting on the table.” And a trip to Vintner’s Cottage during the fall provides a special opportunity: getting to see the harvesting of the grapes up close, a treat for Inspirato member Bruce M. “We had the opportunity to join an early-morning harvest, and we enjoyed a truly exceptional farm-to-table lunch in a dining room built for that purpose, overlooking the vineyard through a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows,” he said. “Carla and the rest of the Blue Rock team were extraordinarily hospitable, and very accommodating.” Bruce also said he was perfectly happy to stay on the property in the evening—members have free rein to explore after the winery closes at 6 p.m.—and grill up some steaks, pairing them with Blue Rock wines. (He recommends the Best Barrel Cabernet Sauvignon.) Wine aficionado or not, any Inspirato member with an interest in the winemaking process should consider a stay at Vintner’s Cottage for their next trip to wine country. “My only regret is that our stay ended before we had a chance to try out the bocce lawn,” Bruce said, “but we’ll make a point of that the next time we stay here!” 

VENTURING FAR BEYOND the beaten path and immersing more deeply in local culture, experiential travel connects you with the soul of a place and its people. Whether constructing traditional crafts with native artisans or browsing markets for ingredients to prepare a regional dish with local chefs, this form of travel opens doors previously not on typical tourist itineraries, providing meaningful interactions with the people who make a destination so vibrant. Lingering longer than the trip itself, experiential travel has the potential to enrich your life through the creation of lasting memories, a trend leading discerning global citizens to seek deeper connections during their time spent abroad. Though many travelers yearn for these types of experiences, it may seem difficult to find trips that go beyond the superficial. But discovering the world this way can be as simple as narrowing down your interests and seeking them in a new place, whether that entails an exploratory look into a destination’s history, people, or culture.

INSPIRATO.COM

For travelers seeking an adventurous experience, journeys to remote destinations provide intimate access to seldom-trodden landscapes. Be it a kayaking journey among glaciers and icebergs in East Greenland or a hiking adventure through Jordan’s most ancient stretches, these trips provide the opportunity to connect with ancient and indigenous cultures harboring centuries of wisdom in some of the world’s most beautiful regions. This is true for gourmands, too, as connecting with a culture’s cuisine provides an inherently convivial experience, while aesthetes are sure to find commonality in traditional art forms depicting an area’s history. But perhaps the most experiential journey of all can be found on safari, where conservationists and locals share why the protection of our natural world is more vital now than ever. No matter your travel mode of choice, you’re sure to connect with the soul of these destinations during some of our favorite experiential journeys around the globe.

ASSIST CONSERVATION EFFORTS IN NORTHERN ZAMBIA

Though hard to reach, a safari in Zambia lands you at the root of one of the oldest conservation stories in Africa. Venturing beyond the popular South Luangwa National Park, a 3,490-square-mile wildlife sanctuary in the country’s eastern river valley, extend your journey to Liuwa Plain National Park, a seasonally flooded savannah in western Zambia where rare African animals flourish. Its waterways border Angola and are seemingly endless, a vast expanse where zebra and wildebeest tracks etch the floor like veins pumping lifeblood from the rooted islands. Marked by the upper Zambezi Floodplain and bounded by the Luambimba and Luanginga rivers, it’s one of the wildest places on earth, completely untouched by the crowds, paved roads, and pollution that modern development entails. First protected by King Lewanika of the Lozi tribe in the 1880s, a visit here first requires a series of charter flights until a helicopter finally delivers you to Time + Tide King Lewanika Lodge, the first and only permanent camp in the park. Although a country away, the Angolan Civil War reached Liuwa Plain before its end in 2002, spreading the practice of poaching and illegal trophy hunting in Zambia’s remote western lands. While almost every species was affected by the war, the lions of Liuwa Plain were nearly eliminated. Going beyond a typical safari, an experience here lends you the opportunity to learn firsthand from organizations like the Zambian Carnivore Programme, where a team of conservationists is working to encourage the protection of the country’s most iconic species. Join the team in the field to discover how they track and monitor animals like lions, hyenas, and cheetahs to ensure that their habitat remains a haven for their offspring to thrive.

PREPARE FAMILIAL CUISINE IN SOUTHERN ITALY

In an idyllic region where fresh burrata and mozzarella are as plentiful as picturesque cottages and stunning Baroque palaces, it’s easy to see why the heel of Italy’s boot is experiencing an uptick in tourism. Bordered by the Adriatic Sea to the east and the Ionian Sea to the south, the region extends from the verdant Umbra Forest to the southern Salento Peninsula, forming one of Europe’s most ethereal coastal landscapes. Whether strolling ancient whitewashed towns like Lecce or staying in a conical stone trulli hut in the heart of Alberobello, immerse yourself in the cultural traditions of Southern Italy during a cooking experience at DireFareGustare, where chefs Mara Battista and Marina Saponari unveil the area’s culinary customs in a sun-soaked farmhouse engulfed by olive groves. Housed in Masseria San Pietro, near the cliffside town of Polignano a Mare, the classes impart generations of recipes passed down from the two chefs’ families, and during an afternoon cooking demonstration, you can learn the intricacies of the region’s plant-centric dishes like how to bake fresh focaccia or prepare light-and-airy ricotta mousse with decadent cotto di fichi (fig syrup). Perhaps the most experiential portion of the class is when students learn the art of hand-rolling orecchiette, one of the region’s most famous pastas. This dish, named for its resemblance to a little ear, is made with a labor of love, as generations often join to handroll the pasta, sharing stories and recipes to safeguard the family’s ancestral practice for generations to come. Believed to have origins as far back as the 12th century BC, the chefs pair the storied pasta with Puglia’s extra virgin olive oils, regional cheeses like pallone di gravina and canestrato, and organic Pugliese wines made from susumaniello, an ancient red wine grape grown in Salice Salentino and Brindisi, creating one of the rarest wines in the world.

Meet with locals like Paulus Larsen, the mayor of Tiniteqilaaq who was born in a traditional sod house, to discover how the region is adjusting to the mounting pressures of climate change. Recalling a colder time when long-tusked narwhals were abundant in the region, the Sermilik Fjord hasn’t frozen in the last decade, though Larsen and his neighbors still subsist on a hunting lifestyle: seal, narwhal, and polar bear. Though younger generations are less interested in the hunting traditions that once formed the basis of life in East Greenland, fishing is now taking root, an activity that can be done even in winter, when the land is completely covered by snow and the northern lights dance beneath a full moon that never sets.

Where mirrored mountain views engulf the horizon and humpback whales skim the surface of the vast Arctic Ocean, East Greenland awes as one of the world’s most isolated wildernesses. Swallowed by prominent peaks, an experiential journey here begins in summer, when kayaking adventures offer access to glassy waters set below unspoiled snowcapped mountains. Beginning in Tasiilaq—a town of only 3,000 residents that is cut off from the rest of the world from November to February when the sun rests low in the sky and a rise and fall of light are all but absent—venture to surrounding villages like Tiniteqilaaq, a diminutive hamlet dotted with red, yellow, and white wooden cabins. A gateway to remote areas like the Johan Petersen Fjord, kayaking trips near the village offer views of the Hahn glacier and glimmering Greenland ice sheet, where outcrops near the Helheim glacier harbor tucked-away

PRACTICE INDIGENOUS ART FORMS IN THE ANDES MOUNTAINS OF PERU

From the dawn of the Incan Empire in the early 1400s, the indigenous Quechua culture has flourished in the high-altitude realms of the vast Andes Mountains in Peru. Taking refuge in Cusco—once considered the navel of the world in Quechuan culture—the town now offers access to stunning treks up the rainbow-hued Vinicunca mountain and visits to storied Machu Picchu, an ancient Incan citadel looming above the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Though the region’s natural landscapes and ancient sites offer a window into the mysterious culture of the Incas, few art forms provide more insight into the culture than textiles woven on a backstrap loom, a practice that offered a means for the Quechua to memorialize their lives in weavings. Serving as social status symbols for the oratorical culture, textile traditions became a way to identify a person’s village of origin and life experience. Today, textiles are just as important as they were centuries ago, a belief that led indigenous Quechua master weaver Nilda Callañaupa Alvarez to open the Centro de Tejedoras de Chinchero, a weaving center set 30 minutes outside of Cusco. Built to empower artisans in 10 communities within the region, nearly 40 women and 30 girls meet every week in the open-air courtyard to practice natural dyeing techniques and ancestral Incan textile designs, such as ñawi awapa, the traditional ribbon of Chinchero that depicts an all-seeing eye of protection. A pioneer of her craft, learn from Alvarez during a custom textile workshop. During the process of making your own weaving, Alvarez can share how she and her fellow weavers resurrected sustainable natural dyeing practices by surveying Quechua elders to salvage the names and regional origins of dyes, delivering every color of the rainbow.

TRACE A CULTURAL ROUTE IN JORDAN

prolific empires, discover how Jordan’s cultural traditions are as vibrant today as they were centuries ago. Taking you to rural villages where Bedouin camps are the only refuge near old shepherd trails and over spectacular canyons, the Jordan Trail is a chance to explore the country’s diverse landscapes and discover the country’s reverential history. The route encompasses Byzantine ruins, the vast canyon of Wadi Mujib, the Crusader castle Kerak, Dana Biosphere Reserve, biblical sites like the purported birthplace of the prophet Elijah, and the striking rock formations and remote sandy plains of Wadi Rum. The journey culminates in a backdoor entrance to the Rose City, where hikers are rewarded for their efforts with the first glimpse of the spires of Petra’s famed monastery, one of the many temples and tombs the ancient Nabateans carved into stone over 2,000 years ago. 

Tracing the ancient King’s Highway on the eastern rim of Jordan’s Great Rift Valley, the Jordan Trail runs for 400 miles from the Fertile Crescent in the north to the Arabian Desert and the Red Sea in the south. Taking over 40 days to complete— the route touches four biospheres and 52 villages and is split into eight sections—the Jordan Trail weaves through a land both the Romans and Nabatean architects of Petra once used for trade. NATIONAL PARK

ADVENTURES DISCOVER OUR PICKS FOR CAN’T-MISS EXCURSIONS—FROM ICONIC HIKES TO SECRET HOT SPRINGS—IN AMERICA’S MOST INCREDIBLE PARKS.

AMERICA’S FIRST NATIONAL park opened to the public in 1872 under President Ulysses S. Grant. At that time, a period of unprecedented westward expansion meant that more Americans than ever were setting off into our country’s vast wilderness— and threatening to permanently alter these precious ecosystems. Impassioned conservationists championed the idea of a national park system to protect our most remarkable landscapes before it was too late, and thus, in 1916, the modern National Park Service was born. More than a century later, in 2018, a total of 318 million visitors set foot inside a park operated by the National Park Service. The national parks are open to—and belong to—all of us, beckoning adventurers from around the world. INSPIRATO MAGAZINE | SUMMER/FALL 2019

Even as the parks attract record-setting numbers of visitors, there are plenty of corners to explore, pockets where you can still feel like the first-ever explorer of a captivating landscape. That’s the eternal promise of the national park system, which documentarian Ken Burns once dubbed “America’s Best Idea.” I’ve always been a fervent fan of our national parks, dating back to my childhood when my parents would take the family on weeks-long road trips, trying to visit as many parks as possible in one cross-country swoop. As an adult, I’ve come to cherish our public lands even more as wild, sacred spaces that represent the best version of our collective humanity—one in which we act as gentle stewards and respectful observers who leave no trace. There’s always an adventure to be had in our national parks. Here are a few of my favorites. »

Seesunrise the HALEAKALĀ NATIONAL PARK

ONE OF THE LAST PLACES on United States soil to witness the sunrise each morning takes place in Haleakalā National Park on Maui. It’s worth the wait. A massive volcanic crater (which last blew its top 500 years ago), Haleakalā is the highest point on Maui at 10,023 feet above sea level. It’s surrounded by a cinder desert landscape that makes the island’s sugar-sand beaches and swaying palm trees feel like a distant memory. With a lack of light or environmental pollution, it’s an ideal vantage point to witness the sun crest above the horizon. That’s just what I did on a work trip one September day last fall with my colleagues, when our alarms sounded at 2:30 a.m. for a bleary wake-up call and we shuffled onto a tour bus for the 90-minute winding drive to the summit. We joined a small group of onlookers gathered in anticipation, facing out toward the inky blackness. As my eyes adjusted to the dark, I could make out the outlines of the vast crater that loomed before me; everyone adopted hushed, reverent tones. The sunrise happened so gradually that it was almost imperceptible: the faintest hint of red warming up on the horizon. The show had begun, and the crowd fell silent. Haleakalā means “house of the sun” in Hawaiian. According to Hawaiian lore, the demigod Maui trapped the sun atop Haleakalā in order to make the day longer. It was certainly the longest sunrise I’ve ever witnessed, with time seeming to slow down enough to witness the orb lift higher in the sky inch by inch. Sunsets on Maui are grand and spectacular, painted across the sky with neon pinks and purples in a way that makes them impossible to ignore. The island’s sunrises have a more dignified beauty, a quieter subtlety that rewards the patient viewer.

Relax in a secret hot spring YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK

INSIDE YELLOWSTONE National Park, there’s always something threatening to boil over. Perched atop a volcanic caldera, the park bubbles with more than 10,000 boiling mud pots, hissing steam vents, colorful hot springs, and geysers that rocket through the air like uncorked champagne. These smoking geothermal features—and the telltale sulfuric smell they carry—only enhance the park’s otherworldly atmosphere. Although Yellowstone is home to the largest concentration of geysers in the world, they don't add much in the way of aquatic recreation. It's illegal to bathe in hot springs within the park's boundaries, and for good reason: In certain spots, water can reach temperatures up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. However, I discovered there is one spot within the park where you can freely soak (rangers allow swimming in bodies of water fed by runoff from hydrothermal features). Just across the Wyoming-Montana border, near the park’s northern entrance and Mammoth Hot Springs, the hydrothermal Boiling River meets the refreshingly cold waters of the Gardner River. This mix of temperatures is just right for a long soak to soothe weary muscles. Tucked in the northwest corner of the park, the hot springs felt a little bit like a secret. We trekked down a rocky, half-mile trail from the parking lot to reach the river, grateful for sturdy water shoes. The hot springs area was cordoned off from the cool river by an improvised rock barrier, cobbled together over time by previous visitors. As we floated alongside a dozen other bathers, my husband and I chatted with a colorful cast of rotating characters, including an oil executive who owned a ranch in nearby Jackson Hole and a friendly pair of free-spirited European backpackers making their way across the States. The occasional brave teen leapt over the rocky barrier into the freezing waters of the Gardner River, shrieking. As daylight waned and the air temperature dropped, we found ourselves enveloped in rising steam, a subtle reminder of the powerful forces at work below Yellowstone.

Hike to the top of Half Dome

WHEN YOU’RE INSIDE Yosemite National Park, Half Dome—the towering granite monolith that rises nearly 5,000 feet above the valley floor—is unavoidable. It’s everywhere: plastered on souvenir T-shirts, emblazoned on mugs in the campground general store, and lurking in the background of all your scenic valley photos. In the late 1870s, early settler Josiah Whitney proclaimed that Half Dome was “perfectly inaccessible.” It didn’t take long for hikers to prove him wrong. Today, while many parkgoers choose to appreciate Half Dome from afar, roughly 300 lucky hikers get to set foot on the rock face itself each day from late May to early October. That’s because the hike to the top of Half Dome is protected by a permit system. Each March,

INSPIRATO.COM

would-be hikers sign up for the Half Dome permit lottery, hoping to be one of the chosen few who are allowed to summit. One summer holiday weekend a few years ago— after scoring permits in the lottery—my hiking party set out in the pre-dawn hours, sporting headlamps to light the way. The Half Dome Trail leads trekkers to the top of the dome on a 14- to 16-mile round-trip course, taking around 12 hours to complete. On the way up, the trail wends past gorgeous waterfalls (Vernal and Nevada Falls), flattens out for a brief reprieve in Little Yosemite Valley, and then switchbacks up to the base of the dome. The length of the hike isn’t what makes it such an adventure. The final pitch is what hikers from all over the world make the pilgrimage to Yosemite for.

63

The last quarter-mile of the hike spikes sharply upward, where braided metal cables—drilled into the rock by park rangers in 1919—needle up the spine of Half Dome, enabling hikers to make the final ascent without technical rock climbing equipment. It’s not an excursion for the faint of heart, or the acrophobic. Staring up at the steep cables rising in front of me, I had a moment of wanting to sit this part out. It seemed too treacherous. I sought opinions from some of the hikers who just stepped off the cables; one woman smiled and said cheerily, “Tough, but doable!” So up we went. It took us roughly 30 minutes to navigate the cables to the top, using our upper bodies to pull ourselves up each gravity-defying step. The cables aren’t a one-way street; hikers going both directions squeeze past one another within the 36-inch corridor. I clung to one side, willing myself not to focus on the downhill slope just inches beyond. At the top, the view of the valley was surreal, and the sense of shared accomplishment palpable. Hikers toasted to their good fortune with fizzy beers, melting trail mix, and in my case, a surprise marriage proposal. I said yes— but requested the ring remain inside its velvet box until we made it safely back down the cables.

NEAR NASHVILLE, 80-foot waterfall, and TENNESSEE yet another munching on leaves high up in a tree. Up at dawn for a scenic drive along the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail through old-growth forest, we spotted another black bear high up in the treetops, watching our car curiously. We had quickly learned that in the Great Smoky Mountains, if you want to see a bear, look up. The best bear sighting was our last one. We planned to take in the sunset atop Clingman’s Dome—the highest point in the park at 6,643 feet. As we strode up the half-mile paved path leading to the observation tower, we heard a rustling in the bushes off the trail. Careful to keep our distance, we watched quietly as a mother and her two small cubs noshed on grasses. Seeing the black bear family up close was a pinch-me moment and a reminder of just how special these national parks are.

ONE OF THE MOST exhilarating parts of venturing into the wilderness is the chance to see wildlife. In Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which straddles the border of North Carolina and Tennessee, you’d be hard-pressed to spend a long weekend and not catch a glimpse of one of the park’s most famous residents: the black bear. When my husband and I visited during a long spring weekend, we were on a mission to see as many of the species Ursus americanus as we could. We’d come to the right place: The park is home to a population of nearly 1,500 black bears. As we rode bicycles on an 11-mile loop around Cades Cove on our first morning, we breezed past historic settlers’ cabins, old churches, and a photogenic gristmill. That’s when we spotted our first of the weekend—a mother and her two cubs about a football field away, marching through a meadow and paying us no mind. On a dusk hike to Laurel Falls later that day, we spotted a black bear boulder-hopping in the riverbed beneath the

Tour historic cliff dwellings

MESA VERDE NATIONAL PARK NEAR TELLURIDE, COLORADO

LOCATED 60 MILES southwest of Telluride, Mesa Verde is one of the most unusual national parks in the entire country, the sole park dedicated to the activity of humans. A crown jewel in the Four Corners area, the park protects nearly 5,000 known archaeological sites, including 600 cliff dwellings, built by the Ancestral Pueblo people who lived there for more than 700 years, from roughly 600 to 1300 CE. It’s the largest archaeological preserve in the United States. The cliff dwellings are a relic from another era, constructed ingeniously with sandstone, mortar, and wooden beams beneath the overhangs of grassy mesas. The marvel is that these archaeological sites aren’t preserved under glass to be observed from a distance—visitors are encouraged to explore the sites on ranger-guided tours and learn firsthand how the Ancestral Pueblo people transitioned from semi-nomadic hunter-gatherers to a flourishing agrarian society. The tours sell out fast—and can only be purchased in person up to two days prior—so I was thrilled to nab a spot for the two largest cliff dwelling tours one busy summer holiday weekend. Cliff Palace is the perfect place to start. It’s the park’s largest dwelling, a veritable apartment complex with 150 rooms sprawling across four stories and 23 kivas (subterranean rooms used for meetings and religious ceremonies). The small tour group set out from the Cliff Palace Overlook on a short dusty trail that sloped downward toward the mesa. Throughout the tour, we climbed 100 vertical feet on a series of five rickety wooden ladders. It’s easy to imagine the once-bustling scene: men, women, and children scampering up to the top of the mesa to tend to their squash and bean crops. But it’s the Balcony House tour that offers the biggest adventure in the park. The tour starts with a climb up a 32-foot wooden ladder that prompted the children in the group to squeal with delight and a few parents to murmur nervously. Later, we dropped to our hands and knees to crawl through a 12-foot-long, 18-inch-wide tunnel between homes. In order to exit, we clambered up a 60-foot open rock face, where grooves have been worn into the stone to form a natural staircase. Though it’s often overshadowed by the larger parks nearby (Rocky Mountain, Zion, and Grand Canyon, to name a few), Mesa Verde is well worth the stop.  Jorie Larsen, Senior Copywriter at Inspirato, is making her way through America’s national parks; so far, she has visited 26 of the 61 protected areas.

Nashville

HOT CHICKEN, BARBEQUE, “meat and threes”—Nashville’s foodie roots may traditionally have been battered and fried, but today’s trailblazers are bucking the trend by testing out different techniques around every corner. Music City’s food scene is a constant churn of both innovation and failure. It’s a place where anybody can make it—or at least try something bold and inventive—in part due to the massive influx of both new residents and tourists with evolved taste buds acquired from living in such metropolises as New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago. In fact, upward of 250 new restaurants have opened in Nashville in the past two years alone. But with the steady rise of rents, many of these restaurants make it only a year before shutting their doors and moving on to the next endeavor (R.I.P. Kuchnia & Keller, and Lulu), so if you see something new and buzzworthy, go now because this might be your only shot. Chefs who have survived Nashville’s exponential growth include James Beard winner Tandy Wilson, who has been at the forefront of the culinary movement since opening City House in 2007; his Sunday Supper is an ever-rotating showcase of his panache for creating flavorful, Southern-infused, Italian-inspired items like lamb sugo with grits, spinach and pecorino, and the wildly popular belly ham pizza with a cracked egg on top. Chefs like Florida expat Philip Krajeck followed in Wilson’s footsteps with Rolf & Daughters, using many ingredients that require a dictionary to decipher and capitalizing on the craze of using whole-animal butchery and seasonal ingredients. Other newcomers like Vivek Surti with his slam-dunk Tailor—in which the Tennessee-born, Indian-American chef features a South Asian-style dinner party consisting of eight to 10 dishes with optional drink pairings four nights a week—tested concepts over the course of a decade via hosting supper clubs before launching a brickand-mortar location in 2018 to instant success. Others like Trey Cioccia, however, have been entrenched in the Nashville restaurant scene their entire careers. The Mount Juliet-born chef worked in the kitchen at the Hermitage Hotel’s Oak Room before opening The Farm House, a mix of Southern fare and Italian cuisine as a nod to his family’s Sicilian roots, in 2013. Cioccia grew up helping out on his family’s nearby 100acre farm and places emphasis on sourcing his meat and produce from within Tennessee; his cheese all comes from just a couple of hours away in Kentucky. Four years after his farm-to-table eatery debuted, Cioccia opened the Black Rabbit in Printer’s Alley, a swanky cocktail lounge in a historic 1890s building with a Roaring ’20s vibe, a tome for a bourbon menu, and decadent bites designed to be shared like the now-famous rabbit rolls.

Savannah is a rare destination that offers both urban culture and a beach experience within a 20-minute drive. Due east of Savannah’s heart, Tybee Island provides a very different vibe with an abundance of seafood caught daily from the Atlantic and kick-back-and-relax settings like A-J’s Dockside Restaurant and the Deck Beach Bar & Kitchen. For the ultimate afternoon of relaxation, the Wyld Dock Bar—a waterfront hangout with lawn games galore—on Isle of Hope brings in diners and drinkers by the droves, particularly on balmy weekend afternoons. A meal in Savannah is more or less an excuse to enjoy a world-class cocktail, a stark difference from when Gen. James Oglethorpe founded Georgia’s First City as a dry town back in 1733. Lounges like the Artillery, a modernday speakeasy occupying a former armory, have helped raise that bar with their nods to classic Savannah cocktails like Chatham Artillery Punch, which was allegedly dreamed up in the late 1700s when George Washington came to town and is served here in a regal, gilded pineapple chalice. The downtown Historic District has an opencup policy, meaning many restaurants and bars will send you on your way with a drink in hand, so you can sip your sweet tea-infused libation while meandering around the 22 public squares dramatically cloaked in weeping layers of Spanish moss, spouting fountains, and monuments aplenty. Most noteworthy on the fine-dining front is The Grey, whose chef-partner Mashama Bailey recently took the top prize for Best Chef in the Southeast at the 2019 James Beard Foundation awards ceremony. Bailey, a transplant from the Bronx, and coowner Johno Morisano, opened The Grey inside an abandoned Greyhound bus terminal in 2014 that had sat empty for decades, spending millions of dollars to unearth its original splendor and adding many Art Deco details of their own to make the restaurant authentic to its 1938 origins. Her fare combines Southern, African, and European influences to produce dishes in four categories—pantry, water, dirt, and pasture—like the signature Yard Bird, a roasted chicken dressed up with peas, radishes, and cream sherry; there’s also a small selection of oysters that rotates nightly. Bailey also appeared on an episode of Netflix’s Chef’s Table, cementing her status as one of the South’s newest celebrity chefs. Don’t have time for a full-on dinner at The Grey? The duo also has a more casual offshoot, The Grey Market, downtown in the style of a New York bodega and lunch counter.

SAVANNAH IS A RARE DESTINATION THAT OFFERS BOTH URBAN CULTURE AND A BEACH EXPERIENCE

Collins Quarter

savannaH DECIDEDLY SMALLER THAN NASHVILLE, Savannah’s food scene is no less worthy, thanks to establishments like the Australian-style café the Collins Quarter and its gastropub sister restaurant, the Fitzroy. This pair of design-forward concepts place equal emphasis on food, ambiance, and the physical space within which it’s all served. It’s no big surprise that every dining establishment in Savannah seems to have been taken straight from the pages of a high-end glossy magazine; after all, this is the city that birthed the internationally acclaimed Savannah College of Art and Design, a popular university among both undergrad and graduate students pursuing careers in architecture, interior design, and other creative fields. Similarly, an increasingly social media-focused world has helped such new spots as Little Duck Diner and Rhett to thrive by making every vignette—from the tile to the table settings to the plating of the dishes—an Instagramworthy moment. Perhaps the most photographed stop of them all, though, is Leopold’s Ice Cream, an old-fashioned parlor right on Savannah’s main drag, Broughton Street, that’s been pulling in ice cream lovers by the masses since 1919.

CHARLESTON’S MODERN-DAY food scene is an explosion of flavors inspired by the French, Spanish, Native Americans, and Afro-Caribbeans who inherited the earth beneath the swampy, oceanic landscape that flows into the Atlantic on the Eastern Seaboard of the United States. This South Carolina region at large lays claim to several foods unique to the area, the most revered of which is the lowcountry boil, a one-pot combo of shrimp, sausage, corn, and potatoes that was initially conceptualized by a National Guardsman who needed to feed all the men in his unit in a seamless manner. Lowcountry boils are typically held in summer months when ingredients are plentiful, and each chef adds his or her own special ingredient—good luck finding out the secret sauce! Poogan’s Porch is a Charleston icon that truly showcases the lowcountry cuisine, but for those looking for a more authentic, bare-bones experience, check out Bowens Island Restaurant’s Frogmore Stew,

which was the original name for this dish. Oyster season runs September through April, though roasts are also popular pastimes in the cooler months, especially from the holidays through late winter. Restaurants like Folly Beach’s The Washout, and Saltwater Cowboys in Mount Pleasant, hold weekly roasts during oyster season with specials on both buckets of oysters and beers. Of course, you can never go wrong with Husk, arguably one of the city’s finest establishments that’s been going strong for a decade. First launched by Charlestonian Sean Brock, the philosophy of the restaurant will remain timeless: Only Southern ingredients are allowed to come through the door. Reverence for the history and roots of the cuisine reign supreme, and dishes that reflect heirloom varieties of both plants and animals grace the menu. Husk’s inaugural location opened in 2010; it now has a trio of outposts in Nashville, Savannah, and Greenville, South Carolina, as well. Willie Mae’s Scotch House

THE SMELLS OF BEIGNETS waft through the streets of New Orleans, no matter what part of town you’re exploring, and while Café du Monde made the beignet a household name, locals swear that if the line there is too long, Café Beignet, which flies below the radar, is every bit as delicious. Southern Louisiana was settled by the French in the 1800s; as such, New Orleans’ food scene is heavily influenced by Creole flavors, and the complementary Cajun cuisine was born out of rural cooking, centering on ingredients early settlers could gather from the land and the sea. Muffulettas and po’ boy sandwiches both hail from here, the latter of which can be sampled in various forms at Parkway Bakery & Tavern, in business since 1911. Red beans and rice are also a staple New Orleans dish, thanks to the Caribbean people who have long called the city home. Many restaurants will offer this simple combination on their menus, though Willie Mae’s Scotch House in the historic Treme is the place to try it; the no-frills restaurant has been serving up soul food since 1957, and its namesake, Willie Mae Seaton herself, was honored with the James Beard Award for “America’s Classic Restaurant for the Southern Region” back in 2005. Food halls also have been on the uptick, an easy way to showcase the diversity of New Orleans food all under one roof, so you can try a little bit of everything. Near the Marigny and Bywater districts, St. Roch Market has become a destination among epicures with its eclectic smattering of cuisine ranging from Mediterranean and Mexican to oysters and a vegetarian juice bar with salads and healthy bowls. Of course, if you want to try New Orleans’ famed bananas Fosters, you can’t beat Brennan’s, where the dish originated nearly 70 years ago, and Commander’s Palace is known for its three-martini lunches, Saturday jazz brunch, and traditional “Nawlins” cuisine dating back to 1893 when it first opened. New Orleans has the perfect perch right off the Gulf of Mexico to indulge in fruits of the sea and, fittingly, boasts some of the best seafood east of the Mississippi. Think gumbo, turtle soup, jambalaya, shrimp, and oyster sandwiches—all of which can be sampled at establishments like GW Fins. An avid scuba diver and lionfish spearfishermen, chef-owner Tenney Flynn is considered one of the nation’s foremost seafood experts, and he brings that knowledge to his kitchen by purchasing only whole fish, which are then broken down in-house. The menu is printed fresh every afternoon and created surrounding the fish accepted that day. Many of Flynn’s signature recipes will be featured in his upcoming cookbook The Deep End of Flavor, out in August 2019. 

IT’S A BOY!

A VAIL MOUNTAINTOP GENDER REVEAL WHEN INSPIRATO MEMBER Marin Hamilton found out she was pregnant with her fourth child, she and her husband, Jesse, were trying to come up with a creative way to announce the pregnancy. “We thought it would be fun (to include our kids), since they’re old enough—they’re 8, 10, and 12,” Hamilton said. “And when I started thinking of those ideas, I was thinking of the timeline we would find out the sex of the baby, and it fell right in line with our spring break plans, when we were staying at Solaris in Vail.” Then inspiration struck: Because the family was going to be skiing, Marin figured that nothing could top a gender reveal on one of the resort’s peaks. “I’ve skied since I was 2, and (Jesse) has skied his whole life, and our kids have too,” Hamilton said. “So I started to (research) things I could do at the top of the mountain, that wouldn’t hurt anybody or hurt the mountain, and I found these INSPIRATO MAGAZINE | SUMMER/FALL 2019

little powder cannons.” So Marin bought three of each: three “girl” cannons and three “boy” cannons. When the Hamiltons arrived at Inspirato’s Solaris property in Vail, they informed their Destination Concierge of their plan, and loaded up two bags: one with blue-powder cannons and one with pink. They gave the envelope with the baby’s gender to Inspirato staff, who then handed them the correct bags to take up the mountain. “Everybody was so sweet and excited for us, and excited to find out once we knew,” Marin said. “Then we took (the bags) up, and that was our first run of the day! We went over to Avanti, because it has such pretty views, and we had good friends with us who took pictures and filmed the video.” When they were ready, Marin, Jesse, and their kids stood in a line at the top of the run, cannons aimed. As they fired them off, blue

powder exploded into the sky—and Marin was speechless. Due to a similarity in the pregnancies, she thought she was having a girl. “I was shocked,” Marin said. “I thought I was having a girl, and I think my daughter thought we were having a girl. We didn’t care—we’re thrilled, and thrilled to be having a boy … but I was stunned … I couldn’t talk for a few minutes afterward,” Marin said. “I think my husband thought it was a girl, too.” Marin credits Inspirato with helping her execute the idea, and for being so accommodating. “Everyone who knew about it was so nice and congratulatory—from the concierges and lounge staff, to the ski valet—and they all made it really exciting,” she said. “We were thrilled … and it was a beautiful day. It was just a fun, special thing to do with the kids.” —MARIN HAMILTON, AS TOLD TO CORTNI DIETZ
