I, Joan tells the story of Joan of Arc as they listen to the voice of God and lead an army to defeat the English during the Hundred Years War. Driven by impatience and a need to fight for a bigger cause, they are successful in battle but eventually begin to threaten the new King who sent them to a battle already lost. By the end of the play, they are captured by the English and put on trial for heresy. They are forced to wear women’s clothing. The end of the play alludes to Joan’s execution by burning at the stake, an unjust end to a strong, empowering person.
