Introduction
Silence: The Sound of Me is an AUB 2nd year dance production that I had the privilege of working on. The main concept for the costumes was the colour white – representing nothingness, blankness, silence and emptiness. My own experiences with silence helped to shape my designs - being a quaker, silence is something that we view as positive. Nevertheless, I still wanted to consider every person’s unique relationship with noise. From this, I worked on the silhouette, textures and details with the help of my team. As a dance performance, there are no characters or plot so it’s quite abstract – I had to think outside of the box a lot which I thoroughly enjoyed. I also had to collaborate with many people, which was a challenge I was happy to take on. The white on its own ended up looking quite flat, so I added in orange details throughout. The costumes were realised using a combination of altering sourced garments and making from scratch. Due to the nature of a dance performance, the costumes were constantly evolving and changing, even up until the day of the first show.
