ALICE CATTEAU I’m Alice Catteau, a UK based illustrator originally from Hampshire. I enjoy creating contemporary illustrated work that is influenced by the natural world and the positive moments found within it. I work with a range of mediums including digital painting, traditional drawing, riso-printing and ceramics. I enjoy creating contemporary illustrated work that is influenced by the natural world and the positive moments found within it. As well as illustration, I’m engrossed in pop culture and musical theatre, and the narrative the characters tell. The value of presenting to an audience is a factor I often consider within my own work. My most recent project, ‘One For Sorrow’, explores English folklore that I grew up with as a child in the form of a children’s picture book. I aimed to show a magpie in a better light, from a thief to a philanthropist. I also wanted to modernize these stories by applying my contemporary style, as I often find a lot of folklore stories are lost due to the archaic style of illustrations that usually accompany it.

ALEX PEAKE Hi! I’m Alex, a freelance illustrator and animator from London. As an artist, I am intrigued by common place situations. I love the everyday but I’m also interested in subjects that make people feel uneasy. Through my work I want to raise awareness about current and cultural affairs. I’ve tackled subjects such as girls and puberty, boys and mental health and the hidden health workers in the NHS. During my degree, I have specifically focused on animation, which has included interviewing, recording and editing sound. Using my Ipad, I produce digitally rendered, bold and graphic illustrations, which are colourful and eye grabbing. My work is commercial. I have previously been commissioned by UNISON and Leap Films to create three short animations to raise awareness about the hidden health workers behind the scenes in the NHS–the porter, the medical receptionist and the cleaner. For my final project, I have focused on the insecurities felt by teenage boys- something that we don’t often hear about. My animation ‘It Must Be Normal’ is an animated interview that can be found on my Vimeo.

AMY ROSE PERKINS Hello, my name is Amy Rose Perkins, I am an illustrator from Hertfordshire. I have received a BA (Hons) in Illustration and a DipHE in Visual Communication from Arts University Bournemouth. Personally, I am fascinated by animals and nature and passionate about spreading the importance of conservation and pollution awareness; for my final major project, featured here, I created a non-fiction children’s book about ocean habitats and sea creatures for children 4 years and over. My book focuses on entertainment, sparking curiosity, excitement and joy through visually stimulating illustrations, encouraging learning and discovery from a young age. The style of my work incorporates vivid tones and rough, hand-rendered textures that I have scanned in. Using my graphics tablet and Adobe Photoshop, I can produce exciting illustrations with a collage feel, a style I believe is relevant and flexible to many different areas of industry

AARON MESNARD Hello! I’m Aaron Mesnard and I am an illustrator and animator. I like to create using pixel art, which has ties to video game imagery and often evokes nostalgia, however I also enjoy working in small and precise manners to create interesting visuals. I enjoy incorporating humour into my work, even if it is a subtle, simple detail on a character or background. There is a wide variety of subject matters I enjoy, including; Science Fiction, video games, Greek Mythology, and fairy tales. I would some day like to work in the video game industry as it has given a lot to me in terms of inspiration that I would like to give back to, and as well as this I would love to work hard to create interactive art for an audience to enjoy

AMY LEONARD I am a Freelance Illustrator currently based in the east of England. I create atmospheric and ethereal urban landscapes, taking inspiration from observations of the world around me. My work can be defined using expressive painting techniques to create an emotive sense of place. I am fascinated by often overlooked places, finding beauty in mundane urban settings. I like to tell the stories of these places as well as the people who reside in them. I am also interested in portraiture and conveying the essence of a person within a portrait. I am hugely influenced by film and visual storytelling, and how photography and cinematography can create a coherent world and characters within a contained space. I feel that my work fits into the editorial, adverting and publishing sectors.

CHANTELLE NUTTALL I have always liked using my work to tell a story and during my studies at Arts University Bournemouth I have developed a love for creating and/or illustrating narratives aimed towards children. Wordless narratives are what I enjoy most. I believe that these narratives are the perfect way to introduce young children to reading and help them develop their creativity and imagination. I aim to create picture books that children can enjoy while encouraging them to be creative and imaginative. I mostly work digitally, however, I enjoy using a variety of textured brushes to emulate a traditional feel to my work. I am always open to new opportunities to develop my existing skills, learn new things and improve as an illustrator.
AMELIA BEST Amelia Best is a freelance Illustrator and Designer originally from a small village in The New Forest. She takes inspiration daily from her surroundings of nature and is usually found climbing trees and walking her dog, Murphy. She has always held a deep passion and exciting interest for visual design, yet during her studies at Arts University Bournemouth, she focused her interest within the children’s picture books sector. However, using her “exceptional colour palette” and a range of hand-made textures, Amelia combines these digitally to create lively and quirky illustrations for many uses, from editorial design to animation. Ability to create hand rendered typography alongside playful and fun illustrations ready for high-quality print. Also trained in various book binding techniques and web-ready gifs and animation. Amelia loves to work with narrative and has written and illustrated 3 children’s picture books over during her studies at AUB. Her most recent work titled The Air We Breathe was written and illustrated to educate children about the dangers of air pollution in our cities, and how planting trees can help to change our world

ALICIA OVENSTONE Hi, I’m Alicia and I am a contemporary illustrator based in Bournemouth. Originally from Chichester, I fell in love with my university town and don’t see myself ever going back home! I work digitally, almost exclusively on my iPad, and draw inspiration from fashion and femininity. I like my art to convey a lot of attitude and you’ll find that most of my work is composed of bright, bold colour. During my time at AUB, my creative practice has been mainly geared towards editorial illustration and I hope to be able to continue to create such work professionally. Upon leaving university, I have had significant interest in portrait commissions which has inspired me to invest in my first printer; I am in the process of starting up my own online store so that I may offer a variety of prints, whether they be specific designs or one off exclusive pieces. Keep an eye on my website for more!

BEATRICE SIMPKISS I am a freelance illustrator and designer based in Hertfordshire , I love creating children’s books, both fiction and non-fiction, As well as creating images suitable for travel and editorial illustrative purposes. I believe my work could be defined firstly, through bold colour and a combination of textures and secondly, through my inclusion of typography into my images. I feel illustrators often view text and typography as a separate entity to their illustrations, however I like to challenge this by using text as a visual and communicative tool. I am inspired by challenging the norms of the children’s picture book industry through making serious topics, such as mental health, visually dynamic and colourful.

CURTIS HANDSCOMBE I am a freelance illustrator based in London, England. I create narratives and illustrations based on important modern-day topical issues that I think need to be brought to people’s attention. I use an editorial style of illustrating because I find it the best way to communicate with the reader. My final major project at university was based on mental health and suicidal thoughts with a satirical based theme within the illustrations, because I often find that humour is the best way of coping with pain. Creating narratives to explain short and simple steps you can take to bettering your own mental health. Away from university I enjoy creating illustrations for products and making bespoke floral illustrations

ELOISE SWANN I am an Illustrator specialising in children’s books and surface pattern design. My ultimate inspiration is the natural world and I aim to incorporate natural forms into my lively, vibrant work. Working in digital mediums, as well as watercolour, I enjoy combining my interest in children’s book illustration and surface pattern design. I believe that it is important to celebrate nature and how it inspires me to create engaging, colourful work that can be used to delight my audience. For my most recent projects, I have experimented with my understanding of natural forms in patterns and I have utilised this to create energetic environments for children’s books. EMILY LARCOMBE My name is Emily Larcombe, I am an illustrator currently based in Dorset. My main focus is within children’s picture books. I enjoy character development, ink work and world creating. I’ve always been a lover of narrative and my biggest inspiration comes from classic fairy tales and folklore. Story telling has always been a passion of mine, I enjoy depicting elements of the impossible and placing them in my work. For my final major project I made a children's book about a witch named Willabelle who is moving to a new home far way. My intention was to combine magic into a real-life scenario for children to learn from and enjoy. Although I love making content for younger audiences, I also enjoy creating a more mature narrative and other forms of storytelling such as poems.

CHRIS CHA I am Chris Cha, an illustrator and animator. I have a personal passion for film and comics: My influences include film noir, 60s-70s western comics, the works of Edgar Wright, Scott McCloud, and Studio Trigger. A principle that drives my work is the idea that visual narratives need to express the strength of unseen sensations, such as emotion, sensory experiences, time, et cetera. By exposing the unseen but internal forces, readers connect to characters and narrative in deeper and more natural ways than just the character’s dialogue and action. My work tends to focus on mental health and manifestations of inner conflict, which has given me ample practice in creating compositions with emotional contexts. In my Final Major Project of the AUB Illustration course, I made two projects, one a science fiction adventure animation involving a cat-person trapped in an alien mine, and the other a comic involving a man suffering from guilt and self-hate in a grocery store. In both cases, my main concern was using storyboards to create a highly empathetic atmosphere.

FRAN NICHOLSON I am a South West based illustrator with a keen interest in creating work that revolves around ideas found in Gothic and Folk Horror, in particular I enjoy exploring themes of the occult, local folklore and monsters, all through the use of anthropomorphic animals. I have found using anthropomorphic animals such as deer and dogs has helped to add an extra element of meaning to my narratives, and provides a way to challenge viewers perceptions. Creating narrative driven work is an important part of my practice and I especially enjoy working in the form of comics as this allows me to explore my narratives and the worlds I have created for them in depth.

GEORGE REYNOLDS I am an illustrator living in Dorset, England. I produce wordless narratives and illustrated sequences exploring modern issues that I feel are important and need to be brought to attention. I create my illustrations with the aim of encouraging the reader to reflect on the problem presented and question their own actions and influence. Pencil drawings have always been my preferred approach to illustration as I like to maintain a traditional method in my work. Presenting these drawings as a sequence came later in my development as an illustrator and added to my fascination with wordless narratives and the ability to tell a story without words. I try to make work that is intriguing, depicting imagined landscapes and compositions with cinematic qualities; patiently progressing to tell a story, allowing the reader to grasp the intended meaning. My final project at University presented the issue of pollution and explored a post-apocalyptic world with birds as the only surviving life.

As an avid enjoyer of the impressionist and post-impressionist eras, as well as having a deep appreciation for philosophy and media influenced by such. My work revolves around illustration and its ties to historical art as an expression my ever changing understanding of the surrounding world, in admiration for those who developed the visual languages that I am enamoured by. KIMBERLEY LAURA WALKER I am a contemporary Illustrator, Animator and Designer, based in Amersham, Buckinghamshire – a small town situated at the end of London’s Metropolitan Line. During my time studying BA (Hons) Illustration at the Arts University Bournemouth, I have refined my practice: the work I create often features graphic, organic shapes and vivid colour palettes. These are often inspired by my affiliation with the natural world, which is reflected in my work. Inspiration is forever a driving force of mine, I also find that metaphors, science, observation and conceptual thinking are fundamental influences to me. An impressive sense of visual clarity goes into my designs, ideal for editorial, advertising, and commercial illustration. I'm an illustrator based in the UK who's a massive anime/manga and it is my main inspiration for my illustrations. I love to create pixel illustrations using my Nintendo 3DS on a programme called Flipnote Studio, where I fully utilise their tools to create detailed, textured illustrations. For my PMP, I wanted to create 6 of my own characters that are based of an element of nature. The goal was to push myself out of the world fan art and use this project as a stepping stone for me to create more original content. I wanted to make these characters look unique and show off their own personal traits/powers to look engaging towards my viewers. Following up on this with my FMP, I made a 1 minute animation video, animating all of these characters into an anime inspired, opening sequence.

JASMINE PEARCE I’m a queer feminist illustrator who portrays themes of, music, body positivity, LGBT identities and mental health in my work. I use digital and traditional media to create detailed and playful images based on my own life experience but which also highlight relevant current events. The everyday life of imaginary marginalised characters is a recurring theme in my work, inspiration for this can come from anything from sketching people in a coffee shop to the lyrics of my favourite songs. My interest in indie and alternative music, independent films and regular habit of daydreaming feed into my work to produce narrative driven illustrative outcomes. Stylistically, my work is very line driven – which can be seen in the cartoon style I draw characters in. I also try to use limited colour palettes with a mixture of bright and subtle colours. I illustrate to visualise stories, but I also illustrate to visualise important messages for the viewer – whether that is portraying a perspective that is different to their own, or showing the viewer that they belong.

JASMINE ROGERS Gorilla boy and Butterfly Girl was the name of my fist book. Complete with small hand cut and stapled pages, and surprisingly meticulous illustrations coloured with an array of glittery gel pens. While this book will sit firmly in a box of all my other childhood masterpieces and not shining on a shelf, the fact still remains that I have always loved creating characters and telling stories. Inspiration for me nowadays comes a little less from kid’s films of the noughties and more from my love of people-watching, nature admiring or finding fun in seemingly mundane day to day activities. All of which is as unique as it is plentiful, around my home here in Bristol. As for my tools of choice, I generally reach for Procreate or occasionally brush markers layered with coloured pencils. Either way, I love to draw with a relative sense of detail that holds elements of subtle texture while still looking crisp and clean. I hope that my future sees me dive into the world of picture book illustration, however as long as I strive for the work I make to be informative, encouraging, inspiring or imaginative, I would consider that a goal complete. My main desire has simply always been that through my own imagination, I can inspire that same kind of imagination in others, adults and children alike.

JULIE STONE I’m an illustrator originally from Austin, Texas, though I’ve absolutely loved making Bournemouth my new home. My practice has found its place in the editorial field, as through the course I found myself most drawn to the visual language of editorial illustration, which often utilizes the power of metaphor and symbolism. I believe the clean and elegant linework and simple yet bright colour palettes I use lend themselves well to the sector. I also find the challenge of solving complex visual problems to answer a brief with a relatively short turnaround to be extremely motivating and conducive to my process as a creative. Themes that I enjoy illustrating include wellbeing and lifestyle, current events, social issues, and science. I’m also inspired by historical Japanese woodblock prints, the natural world, and vintage science fiction.

KATIE GREEN Hi – I’m Katie! I am a freelance illustrator and animator who loves to create interesting narratives – from far off lands to distant futures, I adore a good story that longs to be told. Reality is too mundane for my liking, and stepping into a daring adventure with my work seems to fill that void. And what is any tale without its heroes and villains? Character design is something I have always admired in comic books and animation. I endeavour to make interesting characters to fill my strange worlds, whether it is an overly confident dwarf who thinks himself to be the greatest detective in all the land (although clearly he isn’t), or an evil wizard cat who is clearly hiding something (probably a body). Clearly humour and wit is something I strive to capture in my work – what’s life without a little whimsy? I put a lot of heart into my illustrations, as silly as they may be, so that people will enjoy them as much as I enjoy creating them. So call me your typical nerd, should you wish – it’s what I do best.

LAUREN STEPHENSON I am Lauren, an illustrator based in my studio in Bournemouth; the beach inspires me regularly. I opened my business in 2019 from my bedroom whilst studying at AUB I use a variety of media and I showcase my work in various sizes. Driven around social and environmental issues I enjoy using bright colours and texture in my images. During my final year of university, I developed a publication promoting self-confidence and self-care. This work was created in light of the promotion of pseudoscientific hygiene products specifically targeted at women, regardless of any evidence of success, and in some cases where these products could actually be unsafe. This marketplace has its roots in the shame women experience if they do not abide by the constantly shifting standards of beauty normalised within celebrity endorsements and the body image culture of today. The ideal aim for this project was to create a fun visually accessible counterbalance to this culture order to educate, create debate and inform both boys and girls, women and men. This project has begun gaining recognition including the piece “Be Free!” was a finalist for the Talenthouse competition to Celebrate Women’s History Month and the “Pussy Products” was Curated by The Dots on their Curated People, Project and Today page. Additionally, I received an Adobe Certified Associate in Visual Design demonstrating my proficiency in using programmes. I’m always happy to apply the experience and skills I have obtained throughout my life and career to an interesting project, especially one that involves creative problem solving and innovative thinking I hope that my artworks can connect emotionally to people to bring them happiness to a home!

Even when my work does get darker, I always try to include elements of fantasy and whimsy in order to enrich the worlds I explore through my practice. I enjoy exploring emotion through illustration and like to create narratives that are driven and shaped by the character’s feelings and personal experience. This element is added to through my use of soft watercolour washes and bleeds which are produced both digitally and traditionally.

LYDIA BINGHAM I am an illustrator currently based in Bournemouth. My work centres around bold colour choices and strong line work, with women predominately being the main focus of my illustrations. My work takes inspiration from hearing stories based on real life, and sometimes touching on more personal ones. I am particularly inspired by the female form. During my three years at university, I have tried to find a consistent style within my work, and have leaned towards fashion illustration/ editorial style, which is evident in my illustrations, and is where I believe my work best fits in industry. My final project conveyed the story of my unique twin relationship through a wordless narrative. I particularly focused on character emotions which was shown through the use of strong colour choices, shadows and lines.

LOTTE CASSIDY I am an illustrator and animator from London. I am interested in both documentary and abstract animation and how they can work together, finding the strangeness in the ordinary. I am inspired by photographers and film makers that capture a sense of place through characters and their environments. I am interested in reportage illustration and how these observations and interactions can evoke a narrative. I enjoy exaggerating the absurdity of these everyday encounters to make weird and wonderful images. A consistent element of my practice are my dog illustrations. I found I was able to translate my visual language into clay as it has an unexpected nature, making the dog legs as weird and wonky as possible.

MARY HART I’m Mary Flora Hart, a UK based digital illustrator originally from North London. I enjoy creating immersive scenes bursting with unexpected details, whether that be reportage illustrations or imaginary worlds. Alongside illustration, I’m passionate about music, particularly within the genres of hip-hop and RnB. I love immersing myself within the culture and my work often signifies this. I also have a keen interest for travelling and tackling feminist and environmental issues, I hope to continue drawing and working within all of these themes in the future. My project Flora, a short concertina exploring music genres through psychedelic floral environments, has recently been long-listed for the World Illustration Awards 2020 and within my final major project at AUB I chose to continue down this overgrown route but with modern everyday scenes to create a collection called Urban Eden. Each of the images from this collection measure over 4 meters long to capture all the details and also with the intention of being printing as murals, possibly in offices to encourage green initiatives.

MATTIE KNAPMAN As an illustrator and graphic designer, I am fascinated by the concept of escapism and expression of the mind, which bleeds into my passion for art. Artistic expression, whether its through illustration, graphic design, animation or music enables me to channel a wild and creative imagination into something that hopefully speaks to people. I specialise in digital illustrations that largely utilise fluorescent colour schemes but am also heavily immersed in producing graphically designed content and promotional work within the music industry. take pride in my willingness to participate in manners of work or styles that I have not engaged with before, as I am always searching for different content and lessons to inform my practise and improve my abilities and knowledge as a creator. For my final project I followed this conviction and attempted to make my first ever animated film called ‘The Wizard’ which can be found on my YouTube. This served as an exploration into world building, editing and sound design as I also produced the music from scratch.

MOLLY O'CONNOR Hi! I’m Molly, an illustrator from the West Midlands. I enjoy creating illustrations aimed at children, typically non-fiction as I love the idea of taking information and converting it into visually exciting illustrations and spreads to engage and educate. It would be nice to think that my illustrations/ work may have been the reason a child took an interest in a certain topic or hobby. I typically use Procreate and love adding textures on top to add subtle depth. For my Final Major Project I created a non-fiction book in the style/layout of a scrapbook based all around dogs. In the hopes of educating children on the different breeds to help them understand that dogs aren’t just a gift at Christmas, but that they are quite a lot of hard work and need different amounts of food, exercise and care. I made the book with the aim that it would help not only the children, but the parents figure out which dog would be best to join their family.

My work specialises in wordless narrative comic books for all ages, with themes of anthropomorphism to create humour and a strong narrative. NATASHA DUDLEY Hello! I’m Natasha and I’m an illustrator currently living in Surrey. I recently completed my BA (Hons) Illustration degree at Arts University Bournemouth. I particularly enjoy illustrating for children’s books and for pattern design on products but have always enjoyed creating in different ways and trying out different things. I love illustrating different subject matters such as animals, food items, portraiture and more. The illustrations I create I like to make them playful, expressive (in the characters) and colourful to engage all readers and to appeal to them. I have illustrated 3 children’s book during my time at Arts University Bournemouth. For my most recent Final-Major Project, I illustrated a children’s book about a ring-doughnut who is looking for a middle like his other doughnut friends, but eventually comes to realise that it’s who he is and accepts himself. The story has a humorous puzzle element with the doughnut trying on different middles from different food items but it also holds an important message of self-acceptance for young children which I think is important for them growing up

MEGAN MARETT I am an illustrator from Guernsey, Channel Islands with a love for creating bold and intricate illustrations exploring pop culture and the world around me. I take a lot of inspiration from my love of films and I enjoy creating references to some of my favourite movie characters in my work. Creating relatable and empathetic work is an important part of my process and think that the most successful images I produce portray an emotion or reaction to aspects of growing up in the digital world we live in. My work is not intended to be taken too seriously, I like to be playful with my subject matter and inject humour and sarcasm where possible, through grotesque character details, animation or type. Being multi-disciplined is important to me, so I frequently explore animation and type and combine them to give my work more depth and diversity. I have had my work published in G_IRL Zine and ZONE Guernsey. I have been part of The Gum Chewer exhibition at Revolution, Bournemouth and the ZONE 4 launch exhibition in St James Concert Hall, Guernsey. I have completed commissions for films, music and family events and individual clients, each showing a different style of how I can adapt my work to suit different briefs

MOESHA KELLAWAY In true stereotypical illustrator style, I can often be found tote bag in hand with my sketchbook and a handful of drawing tools rattling around inside and possibly with a pencil in my hair. Whilst I’m a sucker for a 4B pencil and dotted pages, Procreate is typically alongside them in my tools of choice. Drawing inspiration from my childhood growing up in Somerset, my love of nature, people watching and exploring the outdoors, many of my illustrations contain a playful use of shapes, colours and characters - with a mix of detail, humour and sometimes anthropomorphism. Whilst I am captivated by picture books and animation, I hope that the illustrations and work I create is imaginative and inspiring, no matter the format it’s found in.

I used to be a graphic designed before I started to do illustration which gave me a love for cleaner graphic looks with my more painted looking illustrations. I enjoy working with more realistic (border-lining gritty) looking illustrations that show darker and underrepresented topics. I love fairy tales and magical/fantasy topics and often include magical elements into my images. Comics are something I have been obsessed with for years and have started making myself. In them I enjoy more naturalistic approaches to portray human life and emotion. I am quite politically active and enjoy making art interpreting the world around me. My illustrations would probably be classified as more editorial/ comic/graphic design/narrative driven. I work digitally with photoshop and illustrator to create my illustrations.

SHAYE DAVIDSON I am in the main, a traditional illustrator using elements of digital colouring and collaging; and primarily I am interested in the conceptual process of visualising written narrative. As shown in my work I am particularly interested in how sciencefiction novels and short stories have been envisioned into contemporary media. Within my illustrative process, I focus on the separation of foreground and layers, deriving compilations of eclectic mediums to highlight an often distorted but coherent unification of character and background. I enjoy the unrehearsed working process of traditional illustration in creating interesting qualities for textures and drawing and how it can often support a certain narrative of its own.

TASMIN READER When creating adventures with whimsical and fun animal characters I’m passionate about the use of traditional materials such as oil paint and ink. My last project was a children’s book called ‘Bathtime’ which was about a lion who does not want to go into the bath. He decides to after some convincing and goes on an underwater adventure. The book uses simple phases such as ‘splash’ and ‘ok’ as it is an early learner’s book. I like to use experimental mark making to create artwork which is expressive. For example, I would sometimes use salt which changed the flow of the ink suggesting the underwater setting and for the splashes physically splashed the paper.
