I chose the wider, loose hood style as I feel this matches the fit of the ninja outfit. I then started developing the general silhouette of the outfit, so it would be visually different to a standard ninja outfit. I took inspiration from Altair's robes in the original Assassin's Creed, with extra fabric panels in the front and back. This adds more interest and I think will move well with the ninja while ding parkour and fighting.
I found it more challenging to work a hood into a traditional samurai outfit. I originally considered having just the hood and omitting the helmet but I feel this is an important part of the armour, both visually and practically.
I decided on using a hood under the traditional helmet as this blends the assassin costume with samurai armour.
I again tried different colour schemes for the armour. I feel the black with red details works well to match the ninja, showing they're related.
I tired different silhouettes for the samurai armour, either fully made up of the stitched panels or incorporating a plain metal chest plate.
For the main design I plan to use the fully panelled design as this is the most common style of armour. However, I will use a chest plate within my alternative concept designs as this gives more space to incorporate extra details.
swords
Within the game, players ca customise and upgrade weapons. For the katana, I plan for this to be within the colours of the handle wrapping and different tsuba (hand guards). The sword will initially be black and red to match the costumes, with a simple tsuba, but these can be upgraded to be more ornate.
hidden blade
I decided to take inspiration from the hidden blade design in Assassin's Creed 2 as this is set in 1476 - 1499 so relatively close to my chosen time period.
I like this simple leather and metal design as I feel it blends in well with the lacquered iron samurai armour. For the ninja I will also add leather hard wear details to tie this into the design.
