32 KITCHENS BEDROOMS LIVING Feeling Supported?
Hello! Happy Anniversary! I can’t believe it’s been a year! No, not Wills and Kate, Inspired. The first issue of the magazine hit the stands just about a year ago and we’re pleased to say we think this issue is the best ever. We were out on the streets last month with copies of Inspired and although we loved putting the wedding issue together, we realised that it put a lot of you gents off because you thought it was actually a wedding magazine. Thanks for all your valuable comments and feedback and you can be sure that we won’t be doing that again!

This issue is great if you’re thinking of getting fit – we have lots of fit kit for girls and boys, and I met up with Carly from Inspired by Carly and was put through my paces too…read about how I got on and I’ll keep you updated on my progress towards actually running some of this year’s Race for Life in June.

Essex and the Not-so-Single Girl I celebrated two anniversaries at the end of April. The first ever edition of Inspired was launched at the end of April 2011 – and a year with The Man, who I also met at the end of April. Such a lot has happened in the past year. We’ve been away together, had our first proper holiday and of course I’ve moved in with him. I’ve also gained a 15-year old ‘step’ son who loves nothing more than to come and stay over, eat all the fruit in the fruit bowl and then engage in spirited farting competitions with his dad while watching South Park. Boys, you’ve gotta love ‘em eh?
but only because we were trying to plan our second date around his shifts and realised that his next free day was the day of the Royal Wedding. So, I was a real girly and fluttered my eyelashes at him and asked if we could watch the wedding together. When I say watch, I mean I gawped at the dress and got a bit teary-eyed, and he kept looking at his watch and asking how long it was going on for. Fast forward a year and TV still plays quite a part in our relationship. We both love shouty telly – sit us in front of The Apprentice and
It was also Wills and Kate’s first anniversary at the end of April of course. The Man and I were actually talking weddings on our first ever date,
Take Tea on the Green Charming tea shop, Tea on the Green in Danbury has been given an Award of Excellence by The Tea Guild’s in their highly coveted Top Tea Place 2012 awards. The Tea Guild Top Tea Awards are a bit like the Michelin stars of the tea world and the judges were so impressed with the quality of the afternoon teas they were served at Tea on the Green that they awarded them very high marks in absolutely every category – which is why they ended up with an Award of Excellence. Irene Gorman, Head of The Tea Guild said: “Each year the standard of entrants for the awards continues to scale new heights, making the judges’ task of choosing those who achieve an Award of Excellence extremely challenging and this year’s competition was no exception. “This Award of Excellence to Tea on the Green was presented in recognition of consistently high standards of tea making and customer service, evident in the care and attention to detail with which afternoon tea was prepared and served.” Try it for yourself at Tea on the green, 3 Eves Corner, Danbury, Essex, CM3 4QF

we’re away. His taste in trashy TV is much worse than mine, though. Two words… Jeremy Kyle. Oh, my eyes! My ears! We’ve both had to compromise – I’ve moved away from a lot of my old social life, and I can’t just pop over to my mum’s for a gossip after work anymore. He doesn’t eat pizza for tea anywhere near as often as he used to and has had to get used to at least attempting to be a bit tidy. All in all, it’s been quite a year…here’s to the next one for Inspired AND us!

The Face of Essex 2012 Uppercut hair group’s Face of Essex competition attracted over 500 applicants from places as far away as South Africa and America, all looking for an outstanding opportunity that might just catapult them to fame and fortune. However, only a girl from Essex could claim the title! Thirty stunning girls took to the catwalk on Monday 2 April at the Brickyard for the glitzy grand final evening. The star-studded audience watched as Ruby Cooke, 19, from Romford beat 29 rival beauties to take the top spot. This was Ruby’s first attempt at modelling, after being entered into the competition by her workmates, and she now has plenty of photo

Sounds good... Electra Heart – Marina and the Diamonds I’m a late convert to Ms Marina Diamandis, better known as Marina and the Diamonds, and have only recently got into first album ‘The Family Jewels’ despite it having been around a couple of years already. Interviews with Marina hint at a poppier offering this time around, and also calls it a ‘concept album’ – the concept being that somewhere along the line, she’s most certainly had her heart broken! Electra Heart has been produced and co-written with Dr Luke and Greg Kurstin, and features various characters, or sides of a personality in tracks like Bubblegum Bitch and Homewrecker, as well as some bona fide break-up songs like Fear and Loathing or Lies.
On the down side, the first single, Primadonna, has been reviewed by the NME as ‘a giant guff of saccharine nothing’ so when it comes to writing about heartbreak, we can hazard a guess that she’s no Adele or Lana Del Rey. Still, if you like a bit of electronic pop with your broken heart, and you liked ‘The Family Jewels’ it’s probably worth a listen…

Must read this... Reiki For Dummies by Nina L. Paul PhD
Watch ...
I’ve got a list as long as my arm to get through as a very busy month has prevented me from catching up on any of my reading. But that didn’t stop me purchasing Reiki For Dummies by Nina L. Paul PhD. The book isn’t new – it’s actually a 2005 edition, but having been ‘trained’ in reiki in about 2002 and really not using it enough to warrant calling myself Reiki trained, I wanted to recap on some of the techniques I’d learned and maybe even learn a few more. The book is brilliant for dipping in and out of, and it did exactly what I wanted – refreshed my memory on which chakra does what, explain the symbols once again, and even gave me a few ideas on distance treatments. I even tried it out on my beloved the other day and I think he’s converted. Well worth a read if you’re simply interested in Reiki from an ‘I’d quite like to try that’ point of view, and not too simplistic for anyone who already has a bit of knowledge but just needs it refreshing. £8.44 from www.amazon.co.uk or £8.02 downloaded to Kindle.
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is not a gritty real life drama set in a council estate – it’s a stylised, film about a group of British pensioners who take up long term residence in a hotel in Jaipur in the belief that it is a retirement home. The hotel itself is, of course, run down but quite astonishing - Indian Raj architecture of the highest order, run by a slightly crazy young man with a great vision for the future. The film is full of cliches - the Indian call centre; the man returning to his childhood home; the racist old woman who hates black doctors; the mismatched couple; a couple of old imposters looking for romance... We have Delhi Belly; we have the exorbitant club serving pink gins; we have elephants on the street and mystic healers. Every shot shows bustle; bright markets; temples or the contrast of the shabby but peaceful courtyard in the hotel. There’s an overbearing Indian mother; a family of untouchables; a heavy dose of the class system and glorious sunsets. Most of the stories end well - sometimes improbably but it doesn’t matter. There is no pretence that this is real life - just two hours of comedy and sadness that somehow work well together, and with a cast that’s like a roll call of British acting behemoths. Dame Judi Dench, Dame Maggie Smith, Penelope Wilton, Bill Nighy, Dev Patel, what’s not to love?

Ballet Central
The Ballet Central tour includes performances at the Lowry in Salford Quays and the Linbury Studio Theatre at the Royal Opera House, but it’s performing in her home county that’s going to prove particularly exciting for Leanne Sanders, 18, from Harlow, who is training to be a professional dancer at Central School of Ballet (CSB) in London. Students on the final year of their three year BA (Hons) degree course join Ballet Central to get touring experience before they graduate, and Ballet Central dancers also help with all aspects of staging, from technical lighting to wardrobe. There is something for all dance enthusiasts from Classical Ballet, including the Pas De Trois from Swan Lake Act 1, to vibrant Contemporary works, Jazz and Spanish dances as well as a narrative ballet. And there’s the excitement of seeing new works performed for the first time. “We’re also delighted to be performing a new ballet called Circle of 5, which echoes the ideals and themes of the Olympics” said William Glassman, Ballet Central’s Artistic Director.
Another highlight of Ballet Central is the music, much of which has been created by Composer in Residence Philip Feeney who also performs live on the tour.

If you read last month’s Inspired, you’ll know all about Carly Humphreys-Surry. The Braintree-based personal trainer, who I ‘met’ over Twitter last year, invited me over for a session before Christmas, and we’ve never quite managed to synchronise diaries…until recently, that is. If I’m honest, there could have been a touch of scaredy-cat about my procrastination. I’m not the fittest of bunnies, and the thought of being put through my paces by a super-fit personal trainer made me feel more than a little bit of trepidation. But I needn’t have worried. Carly took me to her studio in Braintree, based in a converted garage, and we got talking about my goals. She’s instantly likeable, and there’s nothing remotely sergeant-majorish about
I’ve been Inspired by Carly her. I admitted that my own gym journey had come to an abrupt end when I’d moved house last year, and I hadn’t done much other than the occasional swim and a bit of walking since about September. Carly took me for a brisk walk outside to warm up and chat – then decided that as one of my goals was to improve my time when I run (OK, when I walk) Race for Life in June, she’d test my fitness by seeing how long it took me to walk/jog/run 1.5 miles on the treadmill. We never did find out as I accidentally pulled the emergency stop cord out at 20 minutes, while I was swinging my arms a little bit too enthusiastically. Carly seems to think I was doing OK though, and 20 minutes on the treadmill was quite a workout anyway…!
Sarah’s new “get fit” plan begins!
Carly is qualified to teach Power Plate and ViPR as well as other fitness disciplines, and so I tested out both. The ViPR is deceptively simple to use, but I could definitely feel its effects the following day. The Power Plate is also simple but effective – anyone who tells you that using a Power Plate is exercise with no effort should try one and see if that changes their mind!. I went away feeling as if I’d done a good session – and Carly promised to let me have a plan of action so that I could get started on my fitness journey. I also want to reduce my blood pressure, although it’s not unhealthily high, it’s crept up in the last couple of years – and get my resting heart rate down. I’ll let you know how I get on! www.inspiredbycarly.co.uk
Inspired Essex’ very own Editor Sarah Clark joined me for an Initial Consultation as she has decided she wants to get fitter for 2012. By incorporating some exercise in her daily life, she will not only improve her health, but also reduce stress levels. As part of the consultation, we “walked & talked” in the fresh air (I like to take every opportunity to be outside if the British weather allows), discussed her lifestyle, work commitments & reasons for wanting to exercise. Then we agreed realistic goals that Sarah could undertake in her own time. As one of her targets is to improve her time for the “Race for Life”, we carried out a brief cardiovascular fitness test to use as a starting point for her to work from. I also introduced her to the importance of resistance training – she experienced some good vibes on the Power-Plate and “cut some shapes” with a ViPR. She was a very willing and able participant – I think she surprised herself! By using the services of a personal trainer, Sarah now has 3 defined SMART goals to work towards. I have structured a program she can utilise from home.....but that doesn’t mean I won’t be checking up on her at regular intervals. Lets’ see how she gets on – over to you Sarah! Best of luck. Carly (Inspired by Carly) For more information on Personal Training with me, either as a one-off Initial Consultation or ongoing, please visit www.inspiredbycarly.co.uk

Specs Appeal for Girls Spectacles are becoming a familiar sight on the red carpet as A-list celebrities choose to make bold fashion statements, but how do you find the best eyewear shape to suit your style? Nicole Kidman, Leona Lewis, Katy Perry and Anne Hathaway have all been snapped wearing glasses recently. “There are so many styles, shapes and colours,” said Debbie Bathgate, lens product manager at leading eyewear manufacturer Rodenstock. “Anyone can find a pair of frames that complements their face shape and personality. We’re now seeing more people choose to have two or three frames for different occasions and outfits.”

Rigby and Peller are well known for their super-luxurious underwear, so if you want to create the perfect shape under your posh frock, you should be in very safe hands. To prove that they really know what they’re doing when it comes to styling, they asked four of their fitting room staff to model pieces from the latest Rigby and Peller collections. We think you’ll agree that the results speak for themselves! Miguelle has lovely long legs, which were boosted by a pair of high waisted Spanx Slim Cognito briefs and a Marie Jo Avero moulded strapless bra. The effect was a touch of sophisticated 1950s glamour. Rowan is blessed with a gorgeous hourglass figure, and to enhance this she’s wearing a PrimaDonna Madison balcony bra and brief set which silhouetted her figure instead of hiding her assets.
Sophie was left feeling stunning after accentuating her cleavage with a plunge bra, which worked to draw down the eye and give the illusion of a more rounded bust. Sophie said, “I felt sexy wearing the Simone Perele Celeste plunge bra as I knew the bits I wanted covered were not on show”
Nikki modelled some stunning bridal lingerie - making sure she felt sexy as well as comfortable and well-supported. Strapless and low backed designs are increasingly popular, and this Lejaby crystal basque works well under any shaped dress while also giving great uplift to show off your décolletage. The lace body also gives smooth lines. Perfect!

The Jean dream I hate buying jeans. It’s just one of those fashion expeditions I put off until my favourite pair are practically threadbare, because it doesn’t matter how hard I try, I can never seem to get a pair to fit properly. Too short in the leg, too tight on the bum, too loose on the waist, and in some styles, one colour fits and the other doesn’t. That’s why we asked the fashion guru at Lakeside about how to find the perfect style to flatter you… Lakeside actually put on an event dedicated to helping shoppers of all shapes and sizes find their perfect pair, from 30th March to 1st April. The Jean Genie stylists helped male and female shoppers of all ages – and it was completely free of charge.
Finding the perfect pair Finding the perfect of jeans… if you’re tall pair of jeans… if you’re worried about Finding the right length is key, so keep a look out for brands that do a longer leg length. A jean your bum that is too short is a huge fashion no-no – never be tempted to risk it! Lighter shades work well, but be careful not to go too pale. Go for low rise if you want to balance out long legs and a short body. Try skinny styles or get totally on trend with the 70s flare.
16 PAGE | MAY 2012 ISSUE 13 | www.Inspiredessex.co.uk
Avoid pockets, these add bulk. Use pattern wisely. Steer clear of embellishment on the back pockets as this will draw attention to the area. Make sure that any fading is accentuating the positives, not highlighting those not-so-good bits.
Ladies Fashion
Bootcut or kick flare are great styles to balance out a bigger bum. Stretch denim works well and if your legs are good you can try a skinny jean or straight leg.
Finding the perfect pair of jeans… if you’re worried about your tum The first thing to do is draw the eye away from the problem area. If your bum is an asset then pockets on the back of your jeans, with or without embellishment, will draw the eye to this area. Keep it simple. Clean lines and a darker denim work best. The right underwear will work wonders and will hold you in, in all the right places!
A bootcut jean works well as it balances out the body and draws the eye to the lower leg. The flare is also a great style to try. A tapered leg or skinny jean will tend to emphasise a top heavy figure so should be avoided.
If you find a pair of jeans that fit well at the top but are too long in the leg, don’t forget you can easily have them taken up. Always remember that any alterations need to be done in the same thread colour as the original seams.
Finding the perfect pair of jeans… if you’re shorter than average
If you’re under 5ft 3, you can check out the petite ranges in many Lakeside shops. Petite jeans will be more in proportion for your height and smaller frame.
Always make sure your jeans are almost to the floor – either in heels or flats. This will serve to lengthen the leg.
Lakeside is open from 10am – 10pm weekdays, 9am – 9pm every Saturday and from 11am – 5pm on Sundays.
A higher waist will add more length overall. If you wear a shorter top, you will balance out your body.

Top Tips for Shapewear Shape wear has become a must-have item in most women’s wardrobes over the last few years. Blame Bridget Jones for bringing the big knickers to everyone’s attention – and shape wear is much, much better now than it was in the dark days of the late 90s when big pants were first on show. Today’s shape wear is more effective, much more comfortable and dare we say it, sexy too? Patricia Eve from Harrogate (the UK’s sole distributor for Miraclesuit, Naomi & Nicole and Body Wrap knows her stuff when we’re talking shape wear. She has some top tips for a good fit…
Dynamic Stretch Control - Hi-Waist Brief
1. Always buy nude shape wear if you are going to be wearing it under white clothes. It will not show though whereas white underwear will. 2. Always buy shape wear in your regular dress size. If you buy a piece in a size down you will struggle to get into it as well as creating unsightly bulges where it is too tight. A good piece of shape wear will smooth and flatten in your regular size.
miracleSuit waist Cincher
3. Invest in some staple pieces like the Miraclesuit Hi-waist briefs. These can be worn under skirts, trousers and dresses and can be worn every day to keep your figure looking sleek and smooth.
Body Wrap Slip dress MiracleSuit Hi Waist Boy Shorts
4. Enjoy your underwear, even if it is shape wear. The new Body Wrap Sheer iridescent Collection makes you feel a million dollars under your clothes and with built in control panels makes you look just as good on top! 5. Choose the right piece for the area you are trying to correct. For instance if it is your thighs only, you don’t need to buy hi-waisted garments. If you are looking to drop a dress size round your waist, go for a strong control piece like the waist cincher from Miraclesuit. Ask your stockist if you can try them on and if you are buying for a special occasion, take the outfit with you so you can see the overall effect. www.patricia-eve.co.uk

The Sat Nag
Micro Robot
One for the boys, who will think The Sat Nag is the greatest in-car invention since the Sat Nav. Press the button on the front and a patronising woman’s voice will come out with one of a host of hysterical Sat Nav-type commands. Expect to hear:
This Meccano Spykee Micro Robot is a 6 inch high, radio controlled, tiny bit of genius! How something so small can do so much, only the clever people at Meccano know. The robot’s powerful tracks take on most surfaces; two directional controls spin and move Spykee Robot forward, while cool lights and awesome sound effects add to the effect.
• “I know you’re a man, but it’s been 35 minutes now, so can you please admit you’re lost and ask someone the way?” • “In 100 metres turn left. No right, err, no left. Sorry, I never can tell my left from my right”.
Smart Swipe Buying stuff online is great - but typing in credit card info can be a chore. Name? Address? Card number? Expiry date? Shoe size? Favourite member of JLS? It’s enough to drive you crackers. Worse still, cyber crooks are becoming increasingly devious in their attempts to snaffle your details. That’s why you need the ultra-secure SmartSwipe.
• “In 100 meters I’m going to talk to you in that special voice, which should let you know you’ve upset me in some way that is bound to be your fault”.
Set to totally revolutionise the way you shop online, this ground breaking USB gadget reads, encrypts and transmits your personal credit card data directly to the online payment page. Simply swipe your card and click ‘confirm’ via the onscreen purchase wizard – no typing required.
Specifications: • 2 directional controls - forward and spin. • 4 special effects buttons. • Sound effects (siren, lightsabre whooshing and deck-scratching). • Spykee’s head and base lights up – awesome in a darkened room. • Rubber treads on the base.
There are a few ‘not in front of the children’ comments and not everyone will see the joke. but it’s only a little bit rude. This anti-compass has a holographic screen, highlighting the important roads such as Whiny Lane, Backseat Drive and Earache Avenue. Every car should have one.
System requirements: • Operating System: Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 (32 or 64-bit) • Browser: Internet Explorer 6 or higher; Firefox 3.6 or higher • Requires Internet Connection • 1 available USB port.

Fresh Air!
The Orb Clock is more than just a funky looking time piece, it’s an alarm clock, sleep aid and a timer all in one. Wake up to one of six natural soundtracks, ranging from bubbling waterfalls to the peaceful sounds of the jungle at night, or turn the volume down and use the same sounds to help you drift quietly off to sleep.
The air on a plane is always a bit stale – well that’s hardly surprising given that there’s usually 300 people on board, all squashed into a narrow metal tube - even the most sophisticated aircraft filters are going to have a hard time clearing the air of all their associated allergen, germs and more.
As well as a plethora of peaceful sounds, the orb clock also puts on a soothing light show to help you relax before bedtime, and comes with a 3.3 metres projection clock which, when activated, displays the time in giant numbers on the ceiling for five seconds. As if that wasn’t enough, it also comes complete with a timer, calendar and temperature gauge to help you get your sleeping conditions absolutely perfect. Price: £12.95 www.gadgets.co.uk

Specsavers Gok Wan Fashion tips Specsavers’ style guru Gok Wan is best known as an expert on what to wear to flatter different body shapes but, when it comes to faces, he also knows how important it is to select specs that complement your best features and reflect your personality. The GW by Gok Wan collection, available exclusively at Specsavers, has something for everyone. The trick is to understand how to make the most of your best features and play down your least favourite by using a combination of colour and shape. The first step is to understand the theory before starting to improvise and create your own look. Here are Gok Wan’s six styling secrets to help you choose the perfect pair of specs:
Fit Specs come in many shapes and sizes, and really change the way they look on your face. If your frames are higher than the line of your eyebrows then they probably don’t fit properly. The lower edge should not sit on your cheeks, even when you smile. Consider the width of your frames – if they are too narrow they will make your eyes look close together and any wider than the width of your face at the temples may distort your face shape.
Face shape Make sure you choose specs to suit the shape of your face – frames should be the opposite shape to your face, so if you have a round face you’ll suit an angular frame. A rectangular Face is balanced by wide frames with a strong brow line at the top. As long as your frames fit correctly and suit your prescription and lifestyle, it’s ok to bend the rules and create a style that suits your personality.
Hair The colour, style and length of your hair will give the next clue to finding your perfect glasses. Dark frames look delicious against dark hair and flashes of gold or silver also look gorgeous against a dark background. Dark frames can provide a fabulous contrast for blonde hair and can also make a real style statement with short hair. Light frames keep the focus firmly on the hair, so if your hairstyle is your key feature, it’s best to go for a lighter coloured glasses or maybe something rimless. You can use frames with colours to complement skin tone and hair colour. Green-toned frames look fantastic with red hair and tortoiseshell is just fabulous against auburn hair. Blue tinted specs are beautiful with silver-grey locks.
Skin and eyes Colour is critical and specs should complement your skin tone or eye colour. Gold, tortoiseshell and bright colours can look fantastic against darker skin tones. Silver and black frames work well with darker skin and eyes but can also make a big statement with lighter skin tones. Soft browns look fabulous with paler skin tones, as do burgundy or pink frames, while blues, greens and purples can really highlight blue eyes. Also, think about the position of your eyes. A thin or clear bridge can add width between close-set eyes and a coloured bridge will make wide-set eyes appear closer together. Frames can showcase your finest qualities. If you want to draw attention to your eyes, choose glam glasses with a bit of bling on the arms, or a flash of colour to complement your eyes.
26 PAGE | MAY 2012 ISSUE 13 | www.Inspiredessex.co.uk
Nose Long noses suit a lower bridge and a thick plastic frame, while shorter noses can be balanced with a high bridge or a frame with a thicker brow line. Very wide, narrow or broken noses may need a metal frame with adjustable nose pads. A nose with a naturally low bridge will be flatter on the face, so try on plenty of glasses to get a good fit.
Personality Style is about more than just following trends – it’s an expression of your personality and your specs should be no exception. Once you’ve mastered the basics of styling, you can start using glasses to express your mood. For instance, there are days when I want something that shrieks confidence, so I choose bold statement specs that ooze attitude. Big, 60’s presidentialstyle glasses continue to be a huge hit, with plenty of people who don’t even need to wear specs adopting the geek chic look. Whatever the mood or occasion, your glasses should enhance your look. Don’t be afraid to experiment but remember that some frames will always suit your face, features and colouring better than others. Use the rules to your advantage but be ready to break them when the time - and the look - is right. For me, glasses are just another part of my wardrobe, which is why I have created GW by Gok Wan, for Specsavers. www.specsavers.co.uk

Flooring for Nurseries Will you choose a carpet or hard floor when you’re decorating baby’s room? Well, the choice is yours but here are the pros and cons of both.
Cover it up… How about these brightly-coloured rugs for children’s rooms?
Carpets
Hard Floors
If you go for carpet, it helps with sound insulation; it also helps keep the room warm and when the little one starts to crawl it will be much more comfortable on their knees and joints. A decent non-slip carpet can be safer than a harder floor, and if you’re worried about dust and allergens, as long as you keep the carpet clean there’s no need to worry. Deeper pile carpets can actually trap allergens until they are vacuumed up.
Most laminate floors are easy to clean and maintain, look good and are long-lasting. Although the anti-allergy properties of hard floor may be over-sold, don’t let that put you off as a daily routine is all you need to keep the allergens down.
Carpet looks pretty too, and if colour-coordination is what you’re after, there are so many shades to choose from that the room will look just-so. Choose an easy-to-clean carpet and you can deal with baby’s ‘little accidents’ as and when they happen.
This hand-tufted woollen Peacock rug just invites you to sink your toes into its lovely deep pile. Measures 70cmx120cm Price: £85 - www.berryred.co.uk
Hard floors work well if there’s also a pet in residence. If you have a dog or a cat who just loves to investigate what’s going on in baby’s room, a hard floor might make it easy to get rid of the hair they tend to leave behind after a visit, which is important if your child has asthma or a pet allergy. Of course, you can still co-ordinate a child’s room even if you choose the hard-floored option. Go for a brightly coloured rug, choosing a high quality, deep pile, non-slip and non-allergic, 100% wool rug to make the best of both worlds.
It’s a bit more pricey but we love it - celebrate all things London with the Michelle Mason rug in 100% wool - in fact you’ll probably be stealing it to show off in the living room! Measures: 120cm x 180cm. Price: £350 - www.giftedpenguin.co.uk

Home style
Always in the Kitchen
One of the sure fire ways to perk up a home is to spruce up the kitchen. There are so many ways you can brighten up a tired kitchen - anything from adding some well-chosen accessories and sexy gadgets to a complete redecoration and new fitted units. We spoke to Kevin Miles, Managing Director of Spazio Design, the latest specialist kitchen showroom in Chelmsford, and asked him what’s going on in the kitchen in 2012…
If you’re looking for stylish units with staying power, it’s all about minimalism right now but Kevin predicts that trends may be changing in the near future. “High gloss, flat-fronted, handless cupboards are still very much in demand for their minimal outline, but routed designs might be making a comeback in the next few years. “
Design detail
The Bluetones are back!
So what about the overall design and look of kitchens to come?
If you’re stuck for a theme, blue is the way to go, according to Kevin. “Blue tones are definitely seeing a comeback in the kitchen, particularly platinum blues like the Alno Vetrina glass door, and petrol blues.
“Big banks of tall units incorporating storage and a row of three or four appliances at waist level is a look that has endured because from a design point of view it looks fantastic and it’s practical, too.
“Beiges and greys continue to be popular, and for classic staying power creams and whites are always well-liked. Paler wood tones such as acacia wood or cocobolo and heavily veined woods are definitely coming to the fore, too.”
“Cooks like the convenience of having an oven, microwave, warming drawer and coffee machine at a convenient height, without cluttering up the worktop with freestanding machines. Manufacturers have designed these appliances so that the fascias match and the handles line up exactly and it’s a very appealing solution.” People are thinking about the extras that make

up a kitchen as part of the bigger picture, and built-in appliances have to make the grade too, all fitting in with an overall theme as well as being reliable. Kevin elaborates, “Features that used to be quite elitist are now becoming much more accessible. Customers are asking for pyrolitic (selfclean) ovens, and induction hobs rather than gas for their cleanliness, speed and streamlined looks. Also, there are many more brands of boiling water and filtered water taps available at reasonable cost and people like the idea of ditching their kettle. “Stainless steel appliances are still selling well and some manufacturers are offering easyclean versions with anti-fingerprint finishes. One example of this is Falmec’s Fasteel cooker hoods.
What about the Worktops The cause of many a domestic disagreement when it comes to kitchen design, worktops are a vital part of the look and feel of any kitchen – and if you choose the wrong ones they can look dated and worn out very quickly. Kevin’s advice

is to go for solid surface materials such as Corian and Silestone Quartz, which have been around for many years, are well-liked and will continue to be sought-after. He adds, “ Thin worktops, even down to 13mm, are in vogue and homeowners are also keen on integrated sinks in a material that matches the worktop. Flexible, focal-point taps with a spray spout option are a great addition to the sink area.

“We have definitely seen the demise of the tiled splash back to finish off walls– the more usual specification now is either a glass splash back or a 100ml up stand in the same material as the worktop.” For more advice of making your kitchen work for you – speak to the experts! Whirlpool As Kevin Miles mentioned, appliances are essential in today’s modern kitchen. To celebrate 100 years of innovation, Whirlpool has launched a Limited Edition version of its iconic MAX Microwave. It’s perfect for time saving as it has a steam and a crisp function as well as swanky ambient lighting and a sleek design which fits into really awkwardly shaped kitchens, with a curved back that means it fits directly into tricky corners. www.whirlpool.co.uk
Andrew Langford, marketing manager at Second Nature, said “The new Milbourne suits a range of settings - from country style through to modern.

Kitchen Windows For a funky finish to a new kitchen, or a great way to make an existing kitchen look a bit more modern, have you thought about adding some sartorial style with shutters? They look fabulous, give you added privacy and better security, minimise heat loss, and reduce noise and draughts. Oh, and while they are at it, they look great too. Shutters can also work well with awkwardlyshaped windows. These fine examples are from Just Shutters, a Hampshire-based firm who have just made their range available to Essex customers for the first time this May. The gorgeous kitchen shutters here are made from linden wood, stained to match the frame around the kitchen cupboards. A home visit to advise on styles, measure up and fitting are all included in the price, and all Just Shutters products have a lifetime guarantee. Price: £425 per sq metre. www.justshutters.co.uk

Al fresco extras One of the most annoying things about barbecues and picnics has to be the constant presence of little buzzing things, often with a sting attached. If, like the poor afflicted among us, you’re attractive to all mozzies within a five mile radius, repel the critters with one of these Gelert Citronella Candles from Surfdome. They are lovely and environmentally friendly, biodegradable, and presented in a bamboo holder. They should keeps mosquitos and midges away – and spare you the itchy rash the morning after! These Easycamp blankets from Surfdome are so cute that when the weather isn’t up to a picnic, you can get them out in the living room and have a carpet picnic instead. “To bed out or not to bed out…” - by Grant Whitaker
The snow drops and hyacinths have long disappeared. Your daffodils and tulips are hanging on for dear life. Your primroses are looking tired and you’re itching to get out and replace all your winter/spring displays. It’s time to reacquaint yourselves with the joys of summer bedding. But there’s a nagging doubt in the back of your mind – is it too early and will the late frosts ruin my hard work?
Those who argue that the start of May is too early to begin planting summer bedding do have a point. A sharp late frost can undo all your hard work in one night. But the earlier you start your displays, the better they are going to look through the year. And with a little extra effort to prevent a catastrophe, bedding out now is not as kamikaze as you think. He who dares wins! Hanging baskets are a doddle to look after. Once made, they can be kept in the greenhouse or, if the weather looks like it might drop below 5ºC, left outside in the day and brought into the house or shed in the evening. This isn’t totally practical but your neighbours will be green with envy when you have a great looking basket hanging proudly by your front door at the end of May!
moving the pots as close to the house as possible will offer some protection from the cold. As you are planting out nice and early, remember that your plants are going to need that extra bit of oomph to see them through the whole season. Be sure to add water retaining crystals or gels, use good compost, stock up on liquid feed and dead head whenever possible.
Go on, I dare you… get cracking!
The same theory applies to your patio pots and containers. If they’re too heavy to move however, you can cover them with a horticultural fleece. This is a material that you place over the plant to give extra protection against frost whilst also allowing the plants to breathe. If you don’t have any, you could use some old net curtains or some sacking. If you have none of these items handy, then by Photos by: www.chiotsRun.com www.Inspiredessex.co.uk | MAY 2012 ISSUE 13 | PAGE 37

Everybody loves an Italian Ask most people what their favourite type of food is and it’s quite likely that Italian will feature high up on the list. Pasta, risotto, the famous Mediterranean cooking and plenty of olive oil makes Italian healthy, delicious and versatile.
Herby meatballs in a garlic and chilli tomato sauce Makes 20 meatballs, enough for four • • • •
450g minced beef 120g breadcrumbs 4 tbsp each parsley, coriander and chives chopped, plus extra to garnish 1 egg, beaten
• 4 tbsp sunflower oil
For the sauce • • • • • •
1 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp Very Lazy Garlic 1 tsp Very Lazy Chilli 2 tins chopped tomatoes 1 tsp fresh thyme, chopped 1 chicken stock cube, crumbled
Pan-fried Citrus Trout with Basil Trout is a great alternative to salmon and other oily fish. Not only is it low in fat, and rich in Omega oils and other essential nutrients, trout is also less expensive than a lot of fish being priced more competitively. For more ideas: www.britishtrout.co.uk Serves 4 The clean taste of oranges and lemons and the aromatic scent of basil combine beautifully in this recipe to create a light and tangy sauce for trout fillets
Ingredients • • • • • • • • • •
4 trout fillets, each about 200g/7oz 2 lemons 3 oranges 105ml/7 tbsp olive oil 45ml/3 tbsp plain (all-purpose) flour 25g/1oz/2 tbsp butter 5ml/1 tsp soft light brown sugar 15g/1⁄2 oz/1⁄2 cup fresh basil leaves salt and ground black pepper
Method: 1. In a large bowl mix together the beef, breadcrumbs, herbs, egg, ½ a teaspoon of salt and some black pepper. Use your hands to form into meatball shapes. 2. Heat up the olive oil in a large sauté pan, for which you have a lid, and sear the meatballs well on all sides, until golden, about 5 minutes. Remove from the pan and set aside. Remove the oil and wipe the pan clean.
3. Place the oil, Very Lazy Garlic and Very Lazy Chilli in the pan and cook for 2 minutes. Add the tomatoes, thyme and stock cube and cook for 5 minutes on a high heat. Add the meatballs back to the pan and simmer gently, covered, for 5 minutes, or until cooked through. Serve sprinkled with extra herbs. Very Lazy ingredients are available in supermarkets everywhere – for stockists go to www.verylazy.com
Method: 1. Arrange the trout fillets in the base of a non-metallic shallow dish. Grate the rind from one lemon and two of the oranges, then squeeze these fruits and pour the combined juices into a jug (pitcher). Slice the remaining fruits and reserve to use as a garnish. 2. Add 75ml/5 tbsp of the oil to the citrus juices. Beat with a fork and pour over the fish. Cover and leave to marinate in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours. 3. Preheat the oven to 150ºC/300ºF/Gas 2. Using a fish slice or metal spatula, carefully remove the trout from the marinade. Season the fish and coat each in flour. 4. Heat the remaining oil in a frying pan and add the fish. Fry for 2–3 minutes on each side until cooked, then transfer to a plate and keep hot in the oven. 5. Add the butter and the marinade to the pan and heat gently, stirring until the butter has melted. Season with salt and pepper, then stir in the sugar. Continue cooking gently for 4–5 minutes until the sauce has thickened slightly.
6 Finely shred half the basil leaves and add them to the pan. Pour the sauce over the fish and garnish with the remaining basil and the orange and lemon slices.
Cook’s Tip Basil leaves bruise easily, so they should always be shredded by hand or used whole rather than cut with a knife.

David Beckham’s Car Sale £500,000 Of Fame Up For Grabs
Famous soccer star David Beckham is allegedly clearing out his wide collection of cars as his family spends more and more time in L.A. The British football legend is having a massive clear-out of his garages at the infamous ‘Beckingham’ Palace, the home purchased by Posh and Becks in 1999, which is seldom used by the family as they inhabit America full-time. Beckham’s esteemed collection of vehicles consists of two Bentleys, a BMW 645, a Range Rover Sport and a Lamborghini Gallardo worth £170,000, alongside three Harley-Davidson motorbikes. Each one of Beckham’s prize vehicles is worth a packet and in perfect, hardly- used condition. The Value of the vehicles all together easily exceeds half a million pounds, however the grand total could be worth a lot more, considering the connection to the Beckham family.
The Historical facts support this, when Beckham sold his black Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet (complete with custom squad number, 23, stitched into the seats) he yielded £140,000 at auction last year, more than double the purchase price, so considering the fan-base around the player, this little collection could fetch a lot more than expected.

Researchers at the university have converted an electrical car into a mobile laboratory, the “DriveLAB” has satellite navigation functions, night time driving systems and intelligent speed adaptations. Participants concentration, stress levels and driving habits can be captured via intelligent optical wear that can track eye motion and driving habits.
The sat-nav would also utilise local landmarks as cues for users driving in unfamiliar locations. Professor of intelligent transport systems, Phil Blythe of Newcastle University, stated: “For many older people, particularly those living alone or in rural areas, driving is essential for maintaining their independence, giving them the freedom to get out and about without having to rely on others.” If the ability of elderly drivers can be augmented then there should be no question of driving competence in elderly drivers, backed up by Michelle Mitchell of Age UK, who said: “Ability, not age, should determine how safe someone is on the road”.

DriveLAB Developing Driving Aids For Elderly Motorists
Research at Newcastle University is going towards the development of driving aids to help extend the stay of elderly motorists on our roads. Many elderly motorists give up driving as it becomes increasingly difficult with degenerative sight, hearing and reaction times. Many members of the elderly community feel isolated by the lack of independent transportation, and thus the project could reap considerable benefits towards the quality of life of the elderly in the UK. The research is part of a £12 million pound SiDE (Social Inclusion through the Digital Economy) Project, fronted by Newcastle University, which looks at the use of technology to improve peoples lives.
One of the main developments of the research materialised into a bespoke sat-nav which was able to help drivers find a route they were comfortable with, (i.e. avoiding right turns, due to lack of confidence making right turns and judging on coming traffic).

Pets
TOP TIPS FROM 4PAWS: Fleas & Ticks - Make sure you check your dog daily for fleas and ticks to help stop any infestations in your home and on your pooch. If you do find any, treat them as soon as possible along with your home and pets beds to stop any further infestation. Just treating your dog will not stop fleas from coming back as they also lay their eggs in areas like pet beds, sofas and carpets. Ask your vet for the best products.
Grass Seeds – These can cause a lot of problems if not caught at the right time. Here are some signs you can look out for.

FOUR PAWS…
Hair: If large seeds are in the hair behind dogs’ ears, there may be no sign of a problem other than matted hair.
Ear:
A seed in the ear canal may cause your pet to shake his head, scratch at the ear, rub his ear on the floor, or hold his head at a slightly tilted angle.
Eye: A seed between the eye and the
Nose:
A seed in the nose may cause the animal to sneeze, paw at the nose, and may result in some nasal discharge.
Skin: A pet may chew at an area where seeds have become attached to the skin, and one or more of the following could happen: 1. The pet could remove the seeds. 2. The seeds attach to the gums, tongue, and mouth. 3.
The seeds are swallowed. If swallowed, they may stick to the back of the throat near the tonsils and cause inflammation and swelling. Pets with seeds in this area may cough, retch, or gag, and have difficulty eating and swallowing.
4. The seeds burrow deeper into the skin. If this occurs, swelling abscesses, and open draining sores may result.
Feet: A pet may limp on the affected paw,

“We met up with Tyra and her new family and are pleased to inform everyone that she is settled and like a different dog, so loving and content. We are asking that people do consider rescue dogs from your local rescue centre first; there are so many animal that need new loving homes and have been placed in rescue centres through no fault of their own.”
Four Paws has recently been joined by voluntary trainee Wendy Hunt, who needs more model dogs to train on – if you’re interested, the salon gives a 25% discount on all grooming services she carries out.
Four paws dog grooming salon in Lindsell, near Dunmow, has been established since Oct 2009 and has built up a fantastic reputation. The salon offers bathing, blow drying, brush outs, de-shedding, clipping, trimming, Handstripping, ear cleaning/plucking, anal gland expression, claw clipping and even nail painting with specialised canine nail paints.
This could cause ulcers on the cornea and even vision loss.
Four paws also works with the Danaher Animal Home in Wethersfield, Essex, keeping their Facebook page updated regularly with details of animals that need a home. Just click on the Facebook icon at www.4pawsdogsalon. co.uk. “We recently helped to rehome a beautiful mastiff called Tyra from Tendering Council. Tyra was found walking around Jaywick and seemed as though she had been used as a breeding machine. Luckily for Tyra she was rehomed after we sent out an urgent appeal to friends and customers as Tyra was due to be put to sleep by 5:10pm that evening if she was not rehomed.
Salon owner and manager, Emma Gooding has 17 years dog grooming experience and loves her job. She says, “Dog grooming is such a rewarding job which makes it so much more enjoyable. I just love ensuring that customers are having their requirements met and to see both the dog and owner happy with the end result. I have had customers ask me to cut a Mohican on the dogs head and paint nails”.

Business
Get the crowds in – by Sarah Brockwell One of the great things about the city of Chelmsford is its shops. With over 60 independent shops in Chelmsford high street alone, shoppers are spoilt for choice with both retail parks and shopping centres to choose from. So, if you are a shop owner how can you encourage shoppers into your establishment? We asked Sarah Brockwell, Principal of sarahBee marketing for some inspiration. Sarah told us, “Most shops display a SALE sign for a good proportion of the year these days, and it’s no longer the enticement to the public it used to be. Shop owners need to use canny marketing ideas to get shoppers inside….and spending.”
Let’s start with the basics. • Windows, doors and threshold should be clean and inviting • The main sign should look the part (no peeling paint) • If any staff smoke, don’t let them stand out the front of the shop. If you have a window display, make it into a feature which will encourage people to come back time and again. You can do this by having a ‘deal of the week or month’ where you dedicate a part of your frontage to a special promotion. ‘Manager’s Specials’ are good for this. Always try and make your display relevant. This year you can use ideas like the Olympics and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee as relevant themes. Colour coding can work well – where every item that you have in your window is a complimentary colour. One month red, one month blue… see where we’re going with this!?
All these ideas are great for getting people to look in the window but how do you entice them over the threshold? Sarah, of course, has some ideas. “My retail clients all agree that shoppers love to get something for nothing” she explains. “If you own a shop then you need to think a little outside of the box in terms of marketing.”
Here are some marketing ideas for different retail sectors: • • • • • • •
Hair and Beauty – hold free demonstrations inside your shop - things like ‘how to create the perfect up-do or a themed make-up demonstration. Clothing – team up with other retailers to organize a fashion show or run a modelling competition Food Shops – get the staff outside offering free tasters – everyone loves a freebie! Shoe Shops – hold a shoe-recycling day where people bring in old shoes and get a discount on a new pair. Homeware, Hardware and Electrical – hold an ‘Ask the Expert Day’ where shoppers can come in and speak to your in-house expert for advice on things like how to wire a plug or wallpaper a wall Furniture and Interiors – again, offering an in-house expert such as an interior designer works well – maybe team up with a DIY shop to offer discounts to each other’s customers Newsagents and Bookshops – you could run a competition for the best photos taken locally. Choose 12 and turn them into a charity calendar which you sell in your shop.
Probably the most important rule for the success of a shop is customer service. Good service is rewarded with happy customers. Outstanding service will result in excellent customer loyalty. Poor service will generally guarantee that the customer never returns!
Finally, for female shoppers: The Laws of Clothes Shopping: - If you like it, they won’t have it in your size. - If you like it and it fits, you can’t afford it. - If you like it, it fits and you can afford it, it will fall apart the first time you wear it. - If the shoe fits, it’s ugly. Be Inspired
Essex Mum of the Year Remember our Mum of the Year competition in the March issue of Inspired? Well, Tricia Sharpe from Billericay does – she was the lucky winner. Nominated by her daughter Erin, Uppercut Hair Group chose Tricia to be their Mum of the Year and rewarded her with a luxury VIP makeover. Erin sent in a heartfelt email telling us all about Tricia’s involvement in the local community, which she throws herself into, while also running her own business and organising charity events.
Tricia runs her own business, Boing Theraputic Trampolining, which combines trampolining with occupational therapy for people with physical or mental disabilities. In addition, she runs a trampoline club called Recoil Twisters and organises charity events such as a celebrity golf days. She has also been chosen to be an Olympic Torch bearer – does this lady ever sit still?
at their Brentwood Salon. She was treated to the brand new, exclusive 3D colour technique before having a re-style and blow dry carried out by top stylist Kelsey Dowling, and a makeup session with professional makeup artist Lisa Palmer, while she relaxed with a glass of wine, something she rarely has time to do.
Although a single parent, Tricia always found time to care for her three children, who obviously love her dearly. Erin summed it up by saying, “In our eyes, she is Mum of the Year this year, and every year before it!”

and thank Liz in person, saying “We all remember Geoff very well and it’s great to hear the concert was such a success. It’s so kind of Liz to think of us, we really appreciate their generosity and will put the money to good use providing complimentary therapies for patients having treatment on the unit.” Pictured: Liz Clarke (far left) with Lisa Villiers, Paula Northfield and Jo Wootton (Chemotherapy nurses)
Local mum, Kate Haynes, visited the unit with her 22 month old daughter Ellie to say a huge thank you to the staff for all they did when Ellie was born 10 weeks early, as well as present some new equipment for the unit funded by Lakeside Shopping Centre’s Heart of the Community campaign . When Kate heard about the campaign, which makes regular donations of £500 to local charities, she immediately nominated the Neonatal Unit and was delighted when her nomination was accepted. Kate explains her motivation, saying “Ellie weighed just 2lb when she was born and spent 7 weeks on the neonatal unit. The team looked after us and provided an incredible level of care. Through nominating the unit for the Heart of the Community campaign, I’ve been able to give something back, say ‘thank you’ and help them support other local families like us.”
Talent night gives cancer care unit fund a boost Staff on the cancer care unit at Broomfield Hospital have been given a big helping hand to offer complimentary therapies for patients thanks to an extraordinary donation of over £3,000 from a young patient. Emma Turner, a year 12 pupil at Maltings Academy in Witham, wanted to do something memorable to say thank you for the care she has received on the unit so she enlisted the help of some talented friends to organise a fundraising night of music, dance and entertainment.
Liz visited the unit to present her donation to staff. Lisa Villiers, Oncology CNS and Unit Manager, was there to receive the donation

Sophie Scott, Marketing Manager at Lakeside, said: “The team at Broomfield Hospital do a wonderful job caring for local families and it’s an honour to be able to support them. This kind of donation is the reason that Heart of the Community was started; to allow local people to let us know who they’d like us to support so that we can make the most difference in our community.” For further information about the Heart of the Community campaign and to download a nomination form, please visitwww.lakeside. uk.com/About-Us/Corporate-Responsibility/ Heart-Of-The-Community Staff on the unit were joined by Kate and Ellie Haynes, as well as Rebecca Wheeler, PR Coordinator at Lakeside Shopping Centre
Emma explained: “I have a lot of friends who are involved in performing arts so we thought it would be fun to organise a variety show for everyone to perform in. We only expected to raise a few hundred pounds so we’re really pleased to have raised so much and I know it will be put to good use here.” Receiving the donation, Lisa Villiers, Macmillan Oncology CNS, who said: “We use much of our charitable funds to pay for complimentary therapies such as reflexology to ensure our patients are as comfortable as possible while they are being treated, so this wonderful donation will really help us. We’d all like to say a huge thank you to Emma and her family and friends for all their hard work organising the variety show, it really is a fantastic achievement and we’re really grateful for their support.” Emma (centre) brings some friends along to present her donation to staff at the cancer care unit
