The main London Chinatown Chinese Association events take place in Trafalgar Square, Leicester Square and Chinatown. Chinese New Year 2013, the Year of the Snake, falls on 10 February. Chinese New Year is also known as the Spring Festival, and in premodern times it would signal to farmers in China that they must begin preparation for the sowing of their fields. After Christmas each year, the Christmas decorations come down in all the malls, and are quickly replaced with Chinese New Year decorations of lanterns, cherry blossoms, orange-trees and lots of red colour. In the lead-up to Chinese New Year distinct classical spring festival music is played in public places, most commonly the bowed stringed instrumental style.

The most important element of Chinese New Year is the reunion dinner which is held on the eve of the New Year. This is the time when all family members will come for a meal together in the parents or eldest brother’s home, or nowadays in restaurants as well. The reunion dinner spread is usually lavish, with multiple courses including dishes of chicken, pork and fish. In Malaysia, a dish called yee sang is the first to be served. Yee sang, also known as the Prosperity Toss, is a teochew-style raw fish salad, and everyone at the table will help to mix this salad with their chop sticks – with lots of noise, laughter and smiles. The tradition is that the higher you toss the salad, the more your fortunes will grow in the New Year.

Capricorn December 22 - January 20 It’s a busy month ahead, look for new work opportunities. Budgeting, save some money for new projects. Avoid looking for quick results, planning is the key.
Gift giving is an important component of Chinese New Year in Malaysia, with the most common gift amongst family, colleagues and business contacts being boxes of oranges, or live orange trees. Ang-poh – little red packets with new currency notes inside – are given to children single adults and the elderly, and for children this is often the most exciting part of the celebration. A child with many uncles and aunties can potentially collect a lot of money from their ang-poh gifts. The Chinese New Year festivities officially last for 15 days, culminating in Chap Goh Mei – meaning the 15th night. Chap Goh Mei is celebrated with a family meal, music, and decorations.

Spa Treats!
Decluttering your life – Dr Rohan Weerasinghe
With Valentine’s Day looming on the horizon, you might be looking for the ideal place to cosy up and enjoy a romantic break? Well, right on our doorstep is one of the nicest destination spas in the UK, Lifehouse in Thorpe-le-Soken. It’s no secret that I love this place and I jump at any opportunity to spend time there. I was lucky enough to go again recently, enjoying a gorgeous room in the Mulberry Wing, a delectable ESPA full body massage and a treat of a three course meal with one of the nicest bottles of wine I’ve tried in a long time. If you’re interested, it was the Rosé Pinot Grigio, and it was seriously tasty. I’m no wine connoisseur but it was fruity, not too sweet, and had a really crisp taste that complemented my meal perfectly. The latest news coming from Lifehouse is the introduction of the Nifty at Fifty package – a three, five or seven day retreat designed around one of the hottest new nutrition plans at the moment. To qualify you have to be, you guessed it, over 50. You’ll be spoiled with delicious Lifehouse food, and full use of the facilities, but on two days of your stay you will be on a reduced calorie menu. You’ll definitely be getting the special treatment, a personal consultation with Sue Davis, Lifehouse’s resident naturopath, and detailed questionnaires before and after your stay. Your fitness and even your posture are taken into account and you’ll practically bounce out of the spa after your stay! If that doesn’t appeal, or you’re not quite ready for an over-50 spa stay yet, why not take advantage of our great offer?
INSPIRED AND LIFEHOUSE OFFER

Are you thinking about de-cluttering? We’re coming into spring again and it’s the natural time to reassess our surroundings – and tha includes our mind! The cluttering of our physical world is nearly always a reflection of a cluttered mind. This can include many things general stress, worries about work, our children, our relationship, finances, our health and anything else that occupies us emotionally and mentally. This often leads to a sense of overwhelm or time not feeling there is enough time to manage things. So we then tend to leave things unfinished and the clutter starts to build. Here are five practical tips to help you de-clutter your mind and your home:
Mentally Decluttering Your Mind and Home 1. On a weekly basis you MUST take time to clear all the information and to-do lists from your head to paper (or a computer). Research has shown that your mind cannot fully focus on something if it has other distractions even sitting at a subconscious level. I recommend taking 30 minutes every Sunday evening to list on paper ideas, to-do’s, post-it notes – anything into one place. This will create a sense of relief and allow you to start to process and organize what has been floating around in your mind. 2. Have one main project for each year that inspires you. Something that you can work on so that each day, even just doing a small amount on it, you get motivated alongside some of the more mundane things. It could be writing a book, painting, working with a charity or starting a part time business – anything that inspires you. This will help you wake up each day with more purpose. 3. Choose THREE key “things” you want to get done each day that are a MUST. At least one of thee must include a activity that is linked to you major one year purpose. Look to tackle these three things early in the day so that you have a sense of achievement and create momentum. As learn to say NO to things that are not on your immediate list of important activities. 4. As things come up in the week that are less important simply write them in a journal or on scraps of paper or on your phone and at the end o f the week (Step 1), “download them mentally” to paper for review. 5. Once a quarter – do a physical de-clutter bringing everything into one place like a box or bin bag. I mean everything that is lying around the house. Then sort it and assign an action against each one.
A scent of spring
Treat your loved one with a yummy Chockablock ‘Rocky Road of Love’ heart this Valentine’s Day. It’s a scrumptious chunky heart-shaped block of milk chocolate, loaded with dark chocolate hearts, crunchy shortcake biscuit balls and mini marshmallows, and drizzled with lashings of dark chocolate. Find it in Tesco for a very deliciously affordable £4. And try not to scoff it yourself before 14th February!
Each of the Potters Crouch highly scented candles is hand mixed; hand poured; hand labelled and finished, using the finest quality natural ingredients and original perfumes created by an expert French perfumer exclusively for Potters Crouch candles.
Also from Tesco, a great selection of Valentines treats includes the Valentine’s Day Dine in for 2 Kit, £6. www.tesco.com
With a secret blend of wax, all candles burn for about 50 hours. Each candle is encased in a beautifully decorated tin, which is cleverly designed so that when the candle is lit, the tin becomes warm helping to ‘throw’ and release the fragrance into the room.
Emobox USB sticks aren’t usually very exciting or pretty, but this cute new range from Emobox is set to change all that! Emobox has launched a range of stylish, fashion USBs to revolutionise the drab world of memory sticks and slap on some colour and crystals.
We love the spring scents that Potters Crouch have sprung on us this year – Mandarin - During Chinese New Year Mandarin oranges are considered traditional symbols of abundance and good fortune. Sweet tangerine notes with a hint of orange blossom in this delicious smelling candle for an uplifting aroma.
Inspired by the approach of technology on the go, the designs gel with everyday lifestyle including the 8GB ‘Wallet Drive’ that fits in any wallet or ID card holder. ‘Little Bijou’ can even be worn as a necklace and ‘Memory Strap’ is so handy that it also fits snugly on the wrist.
Hyacinths and Bluebells are the sure mark of spring as they carpet woodland and garden alike. Bring the scent of Spring to your home all year round, with fresh green “bluebells in the woods” fragrance blending with the aromatic perfume of hyacinth blooms in this truly wonderful candle.

Love Rug How’s this for a perfect Valentine’s gift? Is your beloved always complaining about cold feet? Warm them up with a Love Rug - a brilliant gift idea for anyone who likes to snuggle up on the sofa with a book and a cup of hot chocolate. This fab blanket with sleeves means you can read, use a laptop, change channels on the TV remote or munch on snacks while still keeping toasty and warm. The blanket is big enough for a proper cover up and the sleeves are nice and loose to allow for bulky clothes and ease of movement.
Daffodil and Narcissus – Wordsworth made sure that the golden daffodil would never be forgotten. Here fresh green notes from the white narcissus are combined with the floral jasmine for a lovely fresh scent. All three are available from www.potterscrouchcandles.co.uk price £8.50
It has a handy pouch pocket for a remote, mobile phone, book or glasses. And if you’re really lucky, someone might let you share it… www.forherfromyou.co.uk £26.95

out. The Oxfordians have refined and darkened their sound for ‘Holy Fire’, with post-punk legends Flood and Alan Moulder on production. The early months are always good for indie albums, before pop juggernaut grinds into gear. Could this be the album they’re capable of?
Bullet for My Valentine – Temper Temper
50 Cent – Street King Immortal
Interview Hub’s music guru Anthony Pearce takes a look at some of the albums that should be causing a stir in February.
Johnny Marr – The Messenger The Smiths guitar legend has been in more bands than you can shake a Rickenbacker at: The Pretenders, Electronic, The The, Modest Mouse and, most recently, Wakefield outfit The Cribs. Still, he’s never released a solo album. But 31 years after forming The Smiths with Morrissey, it’s set for release. Expect his trademark jingle-jangles and moody, Durutti Column-like atmospherics.
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Push The Sky Away
Dr Dre and Eminem join Curtis Jackson as executive producers on the Harlem gangster rapper’s fifth studio album. And, as has been the norm for his last four records, there’s a whole cast of guest producers – and, if the confirmed tracks are anything to go by, guest rappers and singers. Bizarrely Maroon 5’s Adam Levine appears on ‘My Life’, also featuring Eminem. Don’t expect any huge departure lyrically, but with Dre’s ‘Detox’ seemingly shelved forever, at least there’ the promise of a Dre track of two.
The mega-selling Welsh emo band return with their fourth album, ‘Temper Temper’, and the first since 2010’s ‘Fever’. Released under RCA Records, and once more produced by Don Gilmore, it will feature the single, and title track, released way back in October. The last two albums have gone top five – and they’ll quietly be expecting the same from this one.
Eeels – Wonderful, Glorious
Foals – Holy Fire
The 15th Bad Seeds album, out this month, is the follow-up to 2008’s ‘Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!’ and the first not to feature founding member Mick Harvey. Recorded at La Fabriquie, a live-in

Eels return with their 10th album and the follow-up to 2010’s ‘Tomorrow Morning’. The Mark Oliver Everett-led band have featured on more soundtracks than Hans Zimmer – so expect to be hearing them at the cinema, even if you miss this early February release. Mark Oliver Everett, better known as E, handles production as per usual. ANTHEA TURNER GETS CRAFTY BY ABBY KNIGHT The nation’s perfect housewife, TV presenter Anthea Turner, who recently took part in ITV’S Dancing On Ice reveals her anti-ageing beauty secrets, what’s in her make-up bag right now and why crafting is her way of chilling out! Your skin is fab, what do you do to keep it looking so good? I have a typical English complexion, very fine which always reflects how I’m feeling – so if I’m tired or worried it shows – but if I’m happy and relaxed it tends to look good. It means I’m forced to look after it with a good routine and lashings of moisturiser. What are your skin must-buys? I’m a bit of Gemini, I try lots of things and have different products to suit how my skin is at that moment. I love the Skinceuticals anti-ageing range, it’s very tech-y and they have brilliant treatments for eyes. I also like Aveda products and Liz Earle’s Naturally Active range but I’ll also slap on the E45 if I think my skin needs it. Do you have a morning beauty routine? Yes, I combine it with a bit or thinking ahead for the day. I use a facial wash and a moisturiser with a SPF30, even in winter. What’s in your make-up bag right now? Mineral foundation, I love it and would never go back to liquid version. I love Bare Minerals, it just gives your skin such a flawless finish and doesn’t sit in any of the wrinkles. I’m also a big MAC and Bobbi Brown fan, I like soft, natural looking colours, I think they are more flattering as you get older. How many lip glosses do you own? Too many to count, I find them in just about every coat pocket, in my bag, in the car. I love the Buxom range, they do a whole load of really good colours. You’ve said you worry about lines around your eyes? Would you try cosmetic surgery? I have tried Botox and it does work fabulously well but not for my eyes yet but never say never.
Do you think women feel under pressure to stay looking young? I do but it’s not really fair, I think women have to make a huge amount of effort to stay looking good and most succeed, I hate the way the media shows some of our favourite stars in unflattering moments, it might just have been a bad day, I think it’s mean! Which celeb do you think looks fab for her age? It has to be Madonna, she looks so fit too and has an amazing body. Michelle Pfeiffer still looks great and I saw Jane Seymour on TV the other day and she just doesn’t seem to age at all! Who’s your favourite stylist? I go to Lino at Daniel Galvin, he looks after some serious A-listers and he’s been my stylist for years. Have you ever changed your style? No, not really, it’s been a bit shorter or a longer version of the same choppy style but it really suits my curly hair, I have to have layers for it to work, in fact I’m going there next week. Do you find time to cook healthily? I do make time, I think what you eat really does show in the way you skin and the rest of you looks. I worked on a Canadian food TV network for two years and discovered that if you can read you can cook and the more you do, the better you get. My favourite thing to cook is a big roast with lots of steamed veggies. Chocolate or chips? What can’t you say no to? I love them both but I only eat dark chocolate now, it’s very intense so you can’t eat as much but the taste is divine. You look in great shape, how do you stay fit? I’ve always been fairly motivated when it comes to fitness. I’m never going to run a marathon but I do have a personal trainer and run quite a bit. I also have a Power Plate at home which is brilliant for toning. And I’ve started training for Dancing On Ice which is
already helping to shape up muscles I didn’t think I had. Spa or gym? Where you would go to chill out. I love spas, I go to Champneys whenever I can, the Thalassotherapy pool there is fab. And I make time for a regular massage. I also have manicures and pedicure treatments, I’ve had acrylic nails for over 10 years now and I love the way they look. Do you take any supplements? Yes, I take them as a bit of an insurance policy especially if I’ve been running around and don’t think I’ve eaten as well I should. I have a Collagen Gold drink which is great for my skin and hair and an omega 3 supplements for my joints, I also take a multivitamin. A doctor friend once told me I must have very expensive wee but I think it’s worth it to feel healthy. You’ve got a pretty hectic schedule with the new Great Britain Crafting project coming up, what do you do to relax? I do something creative. Ever since my Blue Peter days, I’ve loved making and creating things which is why I’m so excited about heading up the Great Britain Crafting show. Crafting is a great way to escape and to relax and it’s really social too if you get together for classes. And it’s so nice bringing home something you’ve made yourself. Everyone should try it! “

Remember, hiring a Personal Trainer may only be a short term investment i.e. to prepare for a wedding, but the knowledge will stay with you forever.
Now you have got over the first month blues, when everyone thinks about shedding those excess pounds & shifting the inches – but also by now you might find your New Year Resolutions starting to fade… A lot of people assume that a Personal Trainer may be out of their price range, however many of us offer a variety of packages to suit all budgets. Personal Training to most fitness professionals really is a vocation, & we want to help as many people as possible to achieve their goals. Here are 3 great reasons to hire a Personal Trainer;
RESULTS – Generally, the best way to get results is through 1-to-1 or small group training. A Personal Trainer will tailor your sessions specifically to enable you to achieve your goals & maximise the effectiveness of each workout.
the equipment & carry out exercises safely & effectively so that when you do train on your own, you will be much more confident. Finally, c) training with a Personal Trainer will keep you motivated & focussed on your goals! Personal Training sessions are available with Inspired by Carly. Email me carly@inspiredbycarly.co.uk or visit the website for current offers. www.inspiredbycarly.co.uk
MOTIVATION – If you aren’t comfortable using a gym as you feel unsure as to how to use the equipment effectively, then you aren’t going to have the motivation to attend on a regular basis. Therefore, you will not get the results you want! Personal Trainers a) make you accountable as you will have made an appointment with them so will be more likely to attend the session than go straight home after work, b) we will show you how to use
Happy New You – by Alex Cover That’s want most people want for 2013. Many of us resolve to change our lives from a stressful life with no work-life balance to one of discipline, weight loss, calorie counting and goal setting. On average this ‘good will’ lasts a mere 27 days...and often leads to such despondence we decide not bother setting goals anymore. Roll on another year, ultimately resulting in the same habits, wellbeing and circumstances. Well if you broke your resolutions before January was out, and you’d like to get back on track, read on... When coaching my patients on meeting their health goals for 2013 this first thing I do is ask them to assess where they are in life right now. Knowing how balanced your life is now helps us reflect on what really needs to change and then we can prioritise that change in manageable chunks. So here goes... below is the wheel of life. Grab a pen and mark in every section out of 10 (best), 0 (worse) how satisfied/happy/complete you feel you are in the categories below. Then shade the sections from the centre outwards to see how big the piece of pie is in each area of your life.

a priority. So if you have decided, know what you ‘why’ is and have used your resourcefulness to overcome your obstacles it’s time to set some realistic goals. What can you achieve with the time you have?
Surprised? Most people are. If you’ve found yourself with a little circle in the middle and 1 large piece of pie in 1 area you are not alone and it is safe to say your life may not be balanced. So what’s next? Answer the following questions: What do you really want to change and why? If your ‘why’ isn’t big enough your motivation will be low, so maybe you need a different goal. What’s stopped you before? If time and money wasn’t an issue how could you overcome this obstacle? Often ‘no time’ and ‘no money’ are excuses for your goal being a wish rather than

Visualise how it looks and feels to have met your goal. This cements it into your subconscious making each step easier. Is it your perfect body, your new home, your perfect relationship? Be specific as the more specific you are the better your outcome will be and watch for that little voice that says ‘you can’t’. Who in your life has mastered this area and can help you? Now write down what can you do today and each day to bring you closer to your goal? You’d be surprised how 1 step a day soon adds up to 50. Is it 50 sit ups, a walk in the park, saving £5 a day instead of buying coffee? Some days you will slip so be nice to yourself. Lastly what will you do to reward yourself as you achieve your goal and how will you celebrate when you have what you want? And remember enjoy the journey and the results will come! All our beliefs, experiences and programming are stored here and have a powerful affect on how we live our lives. The way we feel depends on whether our thoughts are positive and healthy or negative and toxic. Our thoughts are governed by our belief system, programming, personality type, life experiences and other contributory factors. They determine whether we feel positive, happy and relaxed or stressed, frustrated and fed up.
With Christmas now long forgotten, it is always a good time to reflect upon those New Year Resolutions you made and see how well you are doing sticking to them. So many people have good intentions to give up smoking, drink less alcohol, eat healthily, lose weight, exercise and get fit.... so why do even the most strong willed of us so frequently end up giving in and failing so early on. Well that is what I am going to talk about today because the secret to you maximising your performance, wellbeing and success is your mindset. When you change your mind, you really do change your life and achieve your goals easily. The subconscious mind is the control room of everything. Nothing happens unless your subconscious mind is programmed correctly. So that explains why you can want to do something so badly and yet when you try, you fail miserably time after time. The frustrating thing is that the more your conscious mind comes up with ways to help you, the more your subconscious mind resists regardless of whether the changes you are seeking to make are actually for your benefit. No-one could disagree that being fitter, healthier and happier isn’t better for us. But you see the subconscious mind isn’t logical. It will not assess whether something you have learnt is good or bad, right or wrong. It will simply protect that programming regardless because any programme that is accepted into the subconscious mind is considered to be for your benefit and therefore essential to your survival – so it must be protected no matter what.
The New Year can be a time when we are reminded that our life isn’t exactly as we would like it to be. It is a time when people tend to reflect upon what they have achieved and what they would still like to achieve in the future. Some feel negative, frustrated and overwhelmed by life whilst others are ready for the next challenge and are keen to set new goals whilst continuing to work towards existing ones. One thing is for sure, any stress creates an imbalance in the mind and body and affects our overall health, wellbeing, happiness and success. Work stress, career instability, financial concerns, family pressures, relationship difficulties, separation and divorce, loss and bereavement, difficult work/life balance are all factors which can take a considerable toll on our health and weaken our immune system. In fact, according to the World Health Organisation, stress is the number one illness and disease of the 21st Century. Stress is literally the barrier between what we are and what we can be. It damages your mind and body often without you even realising!
The good news is Hypnotherapy can help you overcome problems and difficulties and achieve your goals easily. You just have to be genuinely committed and motivated to change your life for the better. Because remember as powerful as Hypnotherapy is, us Hypnotherapists cannot make anyone do anything that they don’t want to do. Hypnosis is a totally natural state of mind that we all go in and out of on a daily basis, and you always remain totally alert, aware and in control at all times. The Hypnotherapist simply works with you as a guide to help you get from where you are to where you want to be in the easiest way possible. The secret is to get the subconscious and conscious parts of your mind working together so you can achieve your goals and be the best you can be. This in turn reduces stress levels and helps you to manage normal every day stress better going forward. We all need a sense of purpose and reason to get up in the morning regardless of who we are, how old we are or how driven we may be. It is human nature. So whether you are failing miserably in achieving your goals or just want to get there even faster, give me a call on (01245) 444105 and book your ‘Free Initial Consultation’ now. If you’re smart you can make this year even better than the last. You have the power to change your mind and live the life you deserve, and Hypnotherapy really could help you. Until next time, I wish you a belated happy new year and hope to have the pleasure of helping you find the way to a richer life! Claire

As a hair stylist, it’s important that I stay one step ahead of fashion so that I can give my clients the most up to the minute looks. I worked backstage at London Fashion Week in September so I saw first hand what the major designers were putting forward for Spring / Summer 2013, and from this I was able to predict what key hair trends we will all be sporting in 2013. One of the major trends will be for deep side partings. I love experimenting with this look, my clients are often really surprised by how much of a change to their look it can make when I simply shift their parting to one side. If you want to follow this trend, imagine a line running from the natural arch of your eyebrow to your temple and start your parting at this point for a look that will be perfectly in balance with your features. Waves will also be a key style this year. Whether it’s exaggerating your natural waves, or transforming naturally straight hair into voluptuous curls, this year we’ll all be embracing this look. You can get the look by using heated rollers or curling tongs. The key is to avoid frizz, so always prep the hair with a smoothing serum and finish with a shine spray. The look should be loose and not too ‘set’ so don’t overdo the hair spray. Braids will be big news next year, particularly little plait accents, carefully placed throughout the hair. They can add a really feminine edge to a simple hairstyle and add extra interest and intricacy. From French plaits to fishtails and Dutch braids, there are lots of options to choose from. For a quick and easy nod towards the 2013 trends, simply tie your hair into a low ponytail. They are so easy to do - the key is to keep them sleek, smooth and unfussy for a minimalist look. This year the focus will also be on hair accessories. From hair jewels and fresh flowers to ribbons, scarves and hats, it’s about adding that extra touch to your look.

Vintage Bride – by Hayley Knott
THE DREAM - Since I was a little girl I have always dreamed about my wedding, there are countless photos of me dressed up from the fancy dress box with veils and petticoats dancing around like a princess. That is what girls do. We dream with an unlimited budget and ferocious imagination. The common ideal is to mirror the childhood idols of the story book princesses and marry your knight in shining armour in a grand old castle. Unfortunately when reality hits and you finally grow up, you find out that whatever the likes of Jessie J might say, everything has a price tag, and it does matter! Compromises have to be made. However, I was adamant that I would match my reality as close to my dream as possible.
THE FINER DETAIL – Organising a wedding is not a walk in the park. I underestimated how much there is to do! One of the best things I found that helped was going to wedding fairs, you get a chance to see hundreds of ideas and get loads of inspiration. I would suggest taking along someone who can rein you in and steer you away from everything that sparkles. It was at a wedding fair that I met my florist Megan, from The Willows Flowers. She has such a creative flair and showed me endless examples of vintage inspired arrangements. I also fell in love with the vintage lace accessories by Charlotte at Rags Ribbons and Riches. Have a shop around and do your homework because there are so many talented artisans to make your day magical!

very popular at the moment and there are plenty of suppliers creating beautiful wedding decorations, flowers and accessories. There was so much choice. The first thing I wanted to make sure was that I picked the right setting, so I looked high and low. It seemed I sent off for every wedding brochure going. We decided on Greenwoods Hotel which is a stunning 17th century manor house with a beautiful outside gazebo licensed for weddings. It has a wonderful grand staircase and loads of original features that the photographer just loved!

The Perfect Wedding Dress
– Sassi Holford
Looking for the perfect wedding dress? Well, who better to ask for advice than a designer? We asked Sassi Holford what to look for when you’re on the hunt for the ideal big day outfit… “When you start looking for your dress less is definitely more – only make appointments with the two or three designers whose signature you really feel reflects your personality. During each appointment do not try on too many dresses. Buying a wedding dress is a unique experience and you cannot treat it like buying any other dress. You get a tingle when you try on your first wedding dress and if you try on 48, anything after the fourth is just not going to give you that tingle and you’ll start viewing them as disappointing and stop seeing the dresses in perspective. My consultants guide their clients, asking questions about preferences, aspirations and about the wedding day so that they can gather all the design elements that complement the bride. This process will usually produce two or three flattering dress styles, and then the consultant will work with the bride to choose the style and uniquely accessorise it to produce the perfect gown.

Alternatively, one or two of the chosen styles can provide the shape and detailing for a bespoke design. In terms of shape, here are some golden rules for choosing the right shape of dress for your figure.
Wide hips Avoid horizontal seams across the widest part of the hip, as they will only add more width.
Full bust: You can balance a bigger bust by wearing an A-Line or ball gown skirt shape to create a perfect hourglass
Small bust: Try a sweetheart neckline, plunge or halterneck style to create more curves.
Petite: If you have a small frame, steer clear of very heavy fabrics or bulky designs that will swamp you. Try an empire line as this will work to lengthen you visually. Sassi Holford, www.sassiholford.com , 020 75841532

Rachel Evans Celebrity Stylist Rachel Evans Celebrity Stylist and Founder of MOE, www.makeoveressex.com gives her top tips for brides and grooms do`s and don`t of wedding fashion. “It’s wedding season and ploughing your way through the ton of rules can be daunting, so here’s some dos and don’ts to point you in the right direction.” I used to work with a well-known couture designer on London’s prestigious Sloane Street, and helped many brides choose their dream bridal gown, after initial consultations, followed by fabric and design choices, then all the fittings. I had the pleasure of helping brides make the right choice to walk down the aisle for the opening chapter - the start of the rest of their lives. So here are my Rachel`s MOE tips.
THE dress Brides should choose a gown which you love and feel instinctively is right. Wear the gown, and don’t let the gown wear you. Look at your own style and scour the latest bridal fashions, but remember, overly fashionable gowns will look dated in years to come. Classic gowns will look just that – classic. Your personality should be allowed to shine through, not drowned in swathes of fabric or hidden under a loo-roll puff ball type dress. • Romantica gowns are a hit for 2013, but do ask what your style statement should be. • Vintage lace looks great on Kate Moss, but is it really you ? • Corset laced up at the back gowns look great on some women, with a bodice front, but is it right for your body shape. • Pear shapes should steer clear of puffball gowns. Cinderella looked great in hers, but will you, if you are a size 14 upwards. • Summer brides can choose lighter fabrics. Do think of your season and don’t make the mistake of choosing a gown that doesn’t factor in the weather or climate.
For the Groom? Grooms – will you go tux, formal or semi-formal ? Even the most die-hard tee shirt and jeans guy wants to look cool and James Bond stylish on his big day. A good three piece suit will never go out of style and looks effortlessly put-together even when you get groovy on the dance floor and ditch the jacket. 20 PAGE |
All gents cut a dashing figure in a tux. If you love movies and dream of walking your bride down the aisle after the vows, looking like a movie star then opt for a formal tuxedo. A daring white tux, a la Bogart in Casablanca makes a bold style statement for grooms. If your personality is more James Bond classic man, or effortlessly cool, then opt for a three piece tailored suit. If you opt for a semi- formal suit then think of a fun pocket silk square which complements you tie. Garden parties and beach bashes call for a downward gear shift in formality, and may require an edge of spontaneity. But in the UK, church weddings and registry office do allow for making a well-planned, polished and grand entrance. So grooms - your wedding palette may be buffed up with a knit not silk tie. The bride’s gown may be a simple Jackie Onassis shift dress, with a fun headpiece.
Accessories. • Brides – don’t overdo the jewellery, and think hard about whether you really need that crystal bling. If you have a simple silk and chiffon fabric with attention to details like buttons, then go for minimal jewellery. • Grooms - Whether you are wearing a classic suit tie or a tux bow tie, you can add humour or charm with cufflinks. Diamond, Onyx. Platinum, yellow gold or brass ? Make a bold statement or an understated elegant touch. Wedding shoes. Brides and grooms can buy their Holy Grail wedding shoes from designers like Christian Louboutin, Gina, Jimmy Choo or Manolo Blahnik. Remember, weddings involve lots of walking, standing and dancing so for brides, if you favour flats normally, opt for a kitten heel instead. Heel height is important if you don’t want to tower over your man in the wedding photos. Platforms are good as they take off a couple of inches of heel height, so are comfortable and elegant. Grooms may wish to break in their wedding shoes, to avoid blisters and be able to enjoy all those memorable romantic dance floor moments with your bride. Wear them a few times at home, when around the house, to break in the leather around the ankles. Put them back in the box, to avoid any spillage or damage.
FEBRUARY 2012 ISSUE 22 | www.Inspiredessex.co.uk
Body Shape Body shapes do and can change in the run up to your big day. Fitness - if you are on a fitness make over in the run up to your big day, do allow for this and discuss during gown or suit consultations. If buying off the peg or couture made to measure, you will need to allow for any possible alterations both ways, weight loss or gain.
Be Yourself Don’t invest in a beauty, fitness or style make over which changes the essence of who you really are. Your husband to be fell in love with you, not your version of who you think you could be. Do consult make over stylists like myself, who offer gentle beauty routines, fitness advice and make up tips getting bridal-ready for your aislewalk big day.
Getting Kodak moment ready. Both bride and groom should be tweaked to perfection, not re-invented, and should be what celebs call “camera-ready”. Haircuts or trims for men, hair colouring for brides are obvious. But pay attention to details like teeth and visit the dentist for teeth whitening if you smoke. Book months in advance well any bridal or groom pampering sessions to de-stress in the final few weeks prior to the big day. • Brides - No facial peels or colonic irrigation less than two months before the wedding. You don’t want to do a Samantha in Sex & The City, and turn up with red raw flesh staring back at the groom and guests. • Grooms - facial hair, goatees and shaving cuts are unsightly and uncomfortable for your bride. Do you really still need that “Movember” moustache or goatee? It’s your day. Remember that and your day will be the best it can be. Going on a date If you’re unsure of how to dress for a special date, Angela Poplett, Lakeside’s Personal Shopper, has some words of wisdom that’ll have you looking hot, hot, hot!
you chair-bound before the night’s even begun. For comfortable but stunning shoes head to Office or pick up a pair from the NineWest range at House of Fraser and Debenhams.”
“If you’re going on a first or second date, it’s probably best to dress a bit conservatively. After all, you don’t want to scare him off before the date’s even begun! It’s fine to be flirtatious with your outfit, just make sure that’s it’s not too much. The same rule applies to how much cleavage you have on show.
“Most importantly for any date, make sure you work with your best assets. If you’ve got fantastic legs don’t cover them up by wearing trousers, opt for a skirt or dress. If you’ve got an hourglass figure, show off your waist by wearing a fitted dress and a waist belt in a contrasting colour. Look in H&M or Oasis for thin coloured belts that’ll be absolutely perfect.
“If your relationship’s a few years down the line though, you might want to boost the cleavage a bit and rekindle that all important spice. Jane Norman and Forever 21 at Lakeside have some sexy little dresses that’ll be absolutely perfect for the occasion. “If you can, find out where your date will be; it could be a disaster if you dress for the wrong kind of venue. If he’s determined to keep it a complete surprise, it’s best to err on the side of caution. He might decide to take you dancing so wear high heels but not skyscrapers that’ll have
“When it comes to underwear, there’s no better time that Valentine’s to go for something really sexy. It’s one of the only days of the year when you’ll actually be dressing for your man instead of for yourself so you can afford to push the boat out a bit. Debenhams, House of Fraser and BHS all stock beautiful 50s-inspired lingerie by Gossard. If you’re blonde go for the sets in nude; if you’re brunette or a redhead opt for the black with a nude background instead.

Menace Male Grooming Experience By Levent Yildizgoren Menace male grooming is a salon just for men, owned and run by Matthew Norris and his team. Matt’s journey has been very interesting. Matt is a graphic design and photography graduate, who worked in the City as an investment banker for years but then completely changed direction. He now puts all of his considerable passion and energy into Menace Male Grooming. It’s definitely the customer service experience that impressed me the most. Well, and the back, neck head message and facial I received, not forgetting the cut-throat shave… At Menace the service is delivered without any rush and taking care of every detail. Menace Male Grooming also gives advice to teenagers about how to shave and how to deal with acne. MENACE was the first ever male only salon in Essex. Matt Norris says; “Male grooming salons have been popular in London for years and the male grooming industry has been growing steadily, but I still knew it was a risk opening the first one in Essex. However, men in Essex have
embraced the concept and I am thrilled to now be compared to salons across the country and own the best male grooming salon in the UK!” The salon was voted the Best Male Grooming Salon in the UK 2011 and Matt was also named the Essex Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2010. The salon is even a regular backdrop for ITV2 hit ‘The Only Way is Essex’, and recently styled the headlining acts at V Festival 2012. Treatments on offer include Cut-Throat Shaves, Facials, Massage, Sports Massage, Indian Head Massage, Hot Stones Massage, Waxing, Botox, Ear Candles, non chemical skin peels, Maintenance Manicures and Pedicures. They even offer ear and nostril hair removal. Haircuts are on offer too for both men and boys.
I would certainly go back to the Menace for more. I experienced their ‘Massage, facial and shave’ package and it was amazing. Bathroom trends for 2013 Want to know what’s going to be super-hot in the world of bathrooms in 2013? Or how to get the best bathroom you can for your money/ we asked Better Bathrooms for some ideas. “The influence of nature is becoming highly recognised within the bathroom, with an influx of outdoor materials including wood and stone quickly making their way into the space. In
recognising this design trends, materials now used within the bathroom are naturally inspired with wood proving the most popular, weather real or faux, incorporating this increasing in furniture options. “Tiles will take centre stage throughout 2013, whether on walls, floors, splash backs or the inside of shower enclosures. Large tiles and those which emulate other materials, especially
wood, will prove most popular helping create texture and depth without overpowering the space. “Wood effect tiles give all the beauty of a natural wooden floor, whilst boasting all the added benefits of the tile. Porcelain tiles will overall remain top, with their unbeatable durability perfect for the bathrooms high traffic and pressured environment.”
Saving money in the bathroom “Purchasing your suite on the web is a great way to save, with online retailers offering more competitive prices than the high street. By sourcing direct from the manufacturer to eliminate the middle man, Better Bathrooms can pass these great savings on to the consumer, guaranteeing the best value. “When it comes to budget suites, try investing in practical products; as those which offer a multitude of functions cost less than buying

items separately, whilst also helping maximise space. Take combination units for example, bringing together a basin, toilet and storage facilities into one handy item; saving cash and space. “Shower baths are another innovative purchase, combining a luxurious bathing experience and spacious shower into one gives the very best of both whilst eliminating unnecessary purchases.
The Bathroom Styler App, developed for iPad and Internet takes all the hassle out of bathroom design, and as an added bonus it also makes it fun! This innovative and completely free app lets you indulge your creative streak and play with thousands of different bathroom design combinations from the comfort of your own home before speaking to a bathroom retailer and making your final decision.
“Always plan what you want beforehand to trim costs, as blind shopping leads to impulse buying. Finally try doing it yourself. Installation is the biggest chunk of any budget therefore getting stuck in with your fittings means more cash to play with.” www.betterbathrooms.com

Then send your shortlist to family and friends for their input and post them on social media platforms such as Facebook and Pinterest for feedback. Colourful kitchens are the way to go!
Forget austerity style living, brighten up your kitchen with a splash of colour. For 2013 kitchens are taking on a fresher look with accents of colour, textured surfaces and clever designs accommodating the kitchen as a major living area, according to industry experts Kitchens International. As one of the top independent kitchen designers and retailers in the UK and based across Scotland, Kitchens International are seeing customers becoming bolder in their choices yet retaining style and quality. Light, space, splashes of colour and textured surfaces are just some of the key trends in kitchen design for 2013 according to industry experts Kitchens International. The muted conservatism of recent years are giving way to more bold designs with high tech fixtures, clever designs and the use of more natural materials, especially glass.
34 PAGE |
Wood veneer and heavy textured furniture is also in and creates a very tactile and softer look which blends well with furnishings and the interiors of the rest of the house. Kitchens International award winning Designer Kieron Bell says: “Favoured designs for 2013 will still be for the more minimalist look with a huge array of handle-less units available as well as linear designs. The traditional base and wall units are fading with designs evolving into the living areas and floating units, open shelving and more ‘living’ type furniture becoming the norm. Dining tables or seating areas are being incorporated into the actual kitchen design allowing kitchen designers to have a greater influence on the whole living area design. “Kitchens evolve in terms of design rather than dramatic change but the trend is for a bolder look as the cautious conservatism is being slowly left behind.”
FEBRUARY 2012 ISSUE 22 | www.Inspiredessex.co.uk
For traditional kitchens the look for 2013 is of a combination of painted and timber finishes again lightening the look and avoiding over-fussy designs. Wood, as a natural and sustainable material, provides a relaxed and calm interior. Worktops are veering away from granite and reconstituted finishes such as Silestone and ECO by Cosetine are becoming far more available. www.kitchensinternational.co.uk If you’re thinking of doing some kitchen updating, German kitchen manufacturer Leicht is embracing colour with door materials and bright accessories for its 2013 range. Leicht’s 2013 range of kitchens features great splashes of retro colours, new wood effect materials and some great hi-tech accessories to give your kitchen a brighter and more functional look. It’s all about block colours and using bright

shades to their best advantage, rather than going overboard. Less is more, so use these colours as accents in blocks or areas and combines it with natural colours. The pretty Silestone Chrome Quartz in a contrasting light grey also features metallic shells and glassy crystals. Or go green with Compac Apple which also has a polished finish and features tiny mirror flecks that catch the light and brighten the ambience. Another Diet! No Cook up comfort foods that won’t make you fat The December and January months have a way transforming daily routines and before you know it, you have spent all your time shopping, cooking, attending and planning parties and more importantly, indulging yourself with holiday treats. Now it is February there is no time for exercise to tighten the diet regiment. The important thing to remember in such a case is that you can easily reverse the damage to your weight and health by following a few simple tips once the holidays and the January blues are over.
health supporting. If your health is at risk while you are on the diet, that should be a big red flag.
January kicks off every year with the usual abundance of New Year’s resolutions, diet commercials and advertisements to help you get fit and lose weight for the New Year.
Does the diet promote FAST weight loss? The faster you lose weight, the more your body wants to return to its higher weight again. When you lose weight more slowly, you give your body a chance to adjust to its lower weight. You’ll be more likely to maintain weight loss if it is slow rather than fast. It’s all about keeping the weight off.
Spring rolls around, and we are supposed to worry about the upcoming swimsuit season. Summer gets here and we are inundated with how to get rid of belly fat. During the months of November and December, we get mixed messages of yummy holiday recipes along with all those tips on how not to gain weight over the holidays. It’s like the movie Groundhog Day, except that it’s the same year after year. There’s really nothing new. Fad diets get repackaged and renamed, but they are still the same old fad diets that have been around for decades. Let’s face it. Fad diets don’t work in the long run. If they did, very few people would be overweight or obese. As you are bombarded with diet commercials, advertisements, billboards and other weight loss propaganda, try to have a critical eye. Don’t be a victim of the fad diet industry. Here are some points to consider before investing in a weight loss venture: Is this a diet you can do forever? This is the biggest question you should ask yourself. If you can’t do it forever, then the weight you lose will most likely be temporary. Is this diet program health supporting? In other words, if you have to take shots, drink supplements, take loads of vitamins and get your vital signs checked, then this diet is not

Does the diet restrict a lot of foods? Is there a long list of foods to avoid? Any good nutritionist will tell you that all foods can fit into a healthy diet. No one learns balance or moderation when they practice food restriction. When you restrict certain foods, the risk of desiring them more and binging on these foods increases dramatically.
Cook up comfort foods that won’t make you fat Try these simple steps to lighten your favourite filling foods, and transform a diet disaster dish into a healthy guilt-free indulgence.

layer will cut calories. And top with a ower-cal cheese sauce made with low-fat spread, skimmed milk and reduced-fat mature cheddar cheese. Before: 802 cals | After: 468 cals
Fish & chips Trade frozen battered or bread-crumbed fish and oven chips (they’ve usually been fried first) for homemade. Oven-bake a fresh or frozen haddock, cod or omega-3-rich salmon fillet in foil with herbs, black pepper and lemon juice. Cut scrubbed potatoes into wedges (leave skins for more fibre), brush with vegetable oil and bake. Before: 542 cals | After: 274 cals
Sausage & mash Check the nutrition panel of sausages before buying – premium brands often have more calories and fat than cheaper ones. Reduced-fat bangers are usually the best, but grill, don’t fry. Make mash with sweet potatoes (or use half regular and half sweet). Sweet potato has a lower GI, so keeps you fuller for longer. For extra comfort, swap salty onion gravy for reducedsugar baked beans – they’re packed with hunger-busting protein. Before: 576 cals | After: 456 cals
Shepherd’s pie Dry fry extra-lean mince with onions and garlic, then add canned tomatoes, tomato purée, reduced-salt stock and frozen peas for a fibre and vitamin fix. For a lower-calorie topping, mash carrots, sweet potatoes and regular spuds together – you’ll also get a boost of antioxidant beta-carotene, which the body uses to make skin-friendly vitamin A. Before: 731 cals | After: 400 cals
Swapping cream-based soups for hearty homemade vegetable soups means you can control the salt and fat in them. Add barley, lentils and beans, too – they’re loaded with filling protein and cholesterol-lowering soluble fibre. Can’t be bothered to make your own? Then give shop-bought ones a fibre and vitamin boost by adding frozen peas or sweetcorn, or canned lentils and beans. Before: 174 cals | After: 156 cals

Choose lower-fat chicken over lamb, but don’t dismiss other red meats – lean beef has just five per cent fat. Finally, don’tuse the meat juices for gravy, and use reduced-salt stock. Before: 643 cals | After: 513 cals

Going Veggie -
by Karin Ridgers
Going vegetarian had such a huge impact on my life – benefits that you rarely hear about. I mean you read all of the time that vegetarians suffer less heart disease, cancers, stokes – less food poisoning etc. For me as a 20 something it just felt right. And as the years go by I realize that I can pretty much eat what I want now too without putting on weight. People comment all of the time on how shiny my hair is, how my skin looks young and even how my eyes sparkle. Super comments as I feel “you are what you eat!” Knowing that nothing has suffered for my plate helps me feel happy and when I went vegetarian it felt right and suddenly everything made sense. I felt as I had woken up. This led to me feeling much more confident and then I started my lifelong ambition to become an actress and a presenter….. So going veggie gave me the oomph to follow my dream and this led to me thinking that we could really do with a veggie TV programme. However all of the TV stations didn’t agree! I thought – well that’s it…. Everyone has said no…… I can’t do it… I can’t get a TV programme off of the ground. And then I thought … “what would Tony Robbins do?”….. And he would say “how can I do it?”…. So I thought of the internet. You have to remember that when I first had this idea not many people had emails, there was no Facebook and no You Tube! So I had this dream and no technology to support it.

And now I am running and building VeggieVision TV - and there are some really exciting things in the pipeline – check us out and sign up for my ezine too. We have people filming for us all over the world – Hollywood, Paris, Thailand – even Essex! I have chatted to and filmed with some amazing people including, Brian May, Joanna Lumley, Heather Mills, Jasmine Harman, Anthea Turner, Wendy Turner Webster and more. I kept on going and at times it was really tough. Anyone with a passion, dream or business will say that same and now it’s a rather exciting with the latest for VeggieVision …. Although you will have to drop me a line to keep in touch to find out more as it is top secret at the moment! I love it – Going Veggie has really improved my life in so many ways and it is very easy too. If you feel that now is the right time for you to step up and go veggie then here are 5 simple steps that will help….
FEBRUARY 2012 ISSUE 22 | www.Inspiredessex.co.uk
• Decide and then go for it. Some say it’s the easiest and kindest way to live and eat. First, why do you want to go vegetarian and vegan? Animals? Health? Environmental issues? What ever the answer write it down and put it somewhere you can see it. • Check out ingredients to avoid: Gelatine, whey powder, animal rennet cheese and more. And don’t worry! This is not too difficult to get the hang of, and remember your personal note – why you have decided to cut out animal products in the first place. • Go through your cupboards, fridge, and freezer and decide the best way forward for any non vegetarian products that you have. Maybe you would prefer to give them to someone who needs them? • Check out for The Vegetarian Society and Vegan Society symbol as well as supermarkets own vegetarian approved food. • Have a browse through your local health shop and speak to the manager, check out Holland and Barrett for loads of veggie goodies too.

Too Much Car Technology Can Be Good For You www.automotiveblog.co.uk
Thanks to modern manufacturing techniques, cars are getting lighter and, accordingly, more fuel efficient. Conversely and perversely cars are also getting heavier because of the amount of technology they now carry; and what we see on cars today is just the tip of the iceberg.
will wirelessly monitor the drivers heart rate and respiration by way of a clever seat. Any suspicion of sleepiness will trigger an alarm. The only worry about this is, let’s say for the sake of delicacy, other emotions. Perhaps the car will deploy a virtual bucket of cold water.
It is a truth universally acknowledged that Geeks now rule the Earth and they have determined that what we need in our lives today is even more techno gadgets on our motors. It will soon be impossible to print handbooks for cars because they will be so thick that they will make War and Peace look like a convenient light read. There is even a rumour that printed material will be replaced by a Stephen Hawking recording – because he is the only one who really understands this stuff – to explain each new toy as the driver attempts to deploy it.
It has been reported that 2015 will see the first car with gesture recognition; and you thought you already knew all the motoring gestures. Even earlier there is the possibility of voice recognition. To an extent this is already here as some of you will have already tried to give basic Bluetooth or sat-nav instructions to an automaton that appears to speak a language unknown to man. Nevertheless improvements are coming which means talking to your car will be the norm. Expect worried glances in car parks.
Some of the more eye-catching examples are only two or three years away. Right now some cars will warn the driver if drowsiness is suspected because of lane drifting or similar. This is a great idea especially for long distance travellers. Technology just around the corner
Remember those old fashioned cigarette lighters in cars? In these healthier days they have morphed into handy 12v sockets for operating or charging stuff. Even better would be the chance to remove this old device altogether and charge gadgets wirelessly.
Place your gadget in the convenient container adjacent to the driving seat and charging will begin automatically. Now that’s handy. Still under development is something that any stressed-out dad is going to thank the gods for and who will be happy to cough up any amount of option cost to get it on the car. Noise cancelling headrests! Surrounding noise will automatically generate anti-noise signals. This is the one that will make the discovery of sliced bread slide anonymously into history. Squalling kids in the back, mothers-in-law – goodness gracious, the number of reasons why all cars should have this is beyond counting. It’s true too: this high tech solution for the seeker of a quiet life does exist and is even now being perfected. There is a whole raft of new automotive technology on its way to a new car near you. All the above and much more will be available sooner than you think. There is an argument that says that cars are getting too complicated and there is merit in that; but lots of us like a bit of high-tech and will look forward to some exciting new innovations. As long as they make sense and make a contribution to safety and convenience, what’s the problem?
What’s The Best Option – New Or Used Cars? www.automotiveblog.co.uk
Buying a car is one of those great moments in life. They are expensive enough to merit some serious pondering before parting with the hard-earned moolah, but generate enormous pleasure and satisfaction to the lucky new owners. In short, cars are great.
not have to trek across the land seeking your heart‘s desire. It will be bristling with all the latest technology. Multi-media this and touch screen that are only a pencil tick away and the car will be as safe as the latest regulations require.
The problem is that most of us only have a
A new car will be more fuel efficient and kinder
finite amount of money to spend on what is, in effect, a luxury purchase. Should one push the boat out and go for a new car, or maybe cannily buy a used vehicle and save a bit? There are advantages to both.
to the environment and small cuddly animals. Your gerbil will love you for it and your wallet will be grateful for the variety of finance or lease agreements available. There is no doubt that a new car ticks all the boxes. But wait. Don’t new cars depreciate? Don’t they lose the most value in the first couple of years of their life? Some cars will lose as much as forty percent of their value as soon as they leave the forecourt. This is an important consideration.
Buying new means that the happy purchaser can have a car that is made to order, like a bespoke suit. Specifications can be fiddled with and colour combinations discussed. Options lists can be pored over to make the new car as unique as possible. A new car hasn’t had any accidents, hasn’t been stolen and won’t require a check for outstanding finance. There will be no wear and tear and no suspicious stains to ponder over. It will have a full length warranty and you will
For the most part a quality used car from a reputable source will already have lost most of that first hit of depreciation. Certainly there will be signs of use but a careful inspection and selection of cars with a full service history should show clearly that the vehicle is in good order. Remember, 30,000 miles on the clock is nothing these days. It may well be that you can’t find exactly the car for you but the choice of used cars on the market at any one time should mean you could well come close to that ideal specification without too much trouble. These days the latest number plate only lasts six months so it all comes down to a personal decision. New or used? Either way there is plenty of choice.
A used car might be preferable. For a start your money will go further. A more upmarket motor will be available for the same (or less) money than that new vehicle you covet. It might not have the very latest gadgets on board but it may well be better appointed for comfort and smoothness of ride. www.Inspiredessex.co.uk |

Business
Weatherproofing your business In light of the recent bad weather, the advice for all businesses is to plan well ahead to avoid being caught out. Small businesses in particular can be vulnerable to the effects of bad weather, which can disrupt deliveries, trigger heating and power failures and make it difficult for employees to get to work. Business readiness isn’t just about planning for major emergencies. It’s about planning for the disruptions that can occur every day, such as traffic problems and illness. The cost to businesses can run into millions of pounds, with small businesses employing a handful of staff often among the hardest hit. Businesses of all sizes have to be as flexible as possible: * Make your business or services available online - heavy snow before Christmas 2010 stopped many customers getting to the shops. However, those businesses with an online service still managed to maintain their retail sales. Do you advertise your services via a website? Do you give your customers the option to buy products online?
* Avoid short-termism - as a retailer, could you be stocking certain products in readiness of bad weather or unforeseen events? For instance, consider building up stocks of wet weather items - such as wellington boots and rain coats - in the middle of summer. Others may want to consider working with UK-based or local suppliers so that seasonal items can be bought and sold in much shorter time frames. Are there any other products or services that will be in demand in a particular season or month? * Ensure you’re insured - at a basic level, business buildings insurance will protect your premises against risks such as flooding or fire. If you rent your premises, this will be the responsibility of your landlord, so be sure to double-check that it is in place. You may also want to consider business interruption cover or consequential loss cover to make up for any money lost if you are unable to trade as a result of flooding or closure. Stock cover could also insure your stock independently of the contents of the building.
* Remote IT access - flexibility can be extended to your workforce too. Giving employees the tools to work from home means that the number of working days lost can be minimised. Make sure employees are either given a home laptop or remote IT access so they can log in wherever they are. Remote email access, video conferencing and secure document exchanges can allow employees to remain in secure contact with each other away from the office. * Implement a ‘bad weather policy’ - it may help to create a ‘bad weather policy’ that covers employee and employer responsibilities, remuneration, roles that can be carried out from home and any IT support that may be required in the event of adverse weather affecting travel. Having a policy in place could pre-emept any employee queries or grievances. sorce: www.bird-luckin.co.uk
Do I need a fire alarm? And what type – by Paul Field If you run an organisation and have a premises, then the old news* is that you must carry out a fire risk assessment. Why? The regulatory reform order (RRO) Fire Safety Act 2005 changed the way things used to work, prior to this act a fire officer would issue a certificate to the organisation and this used to last until the building was altered or other changes were made, with the advent of the RRO the law was changed, from that date the Responsible Person (RP) for the organisation now has to carry out the Fire Risk Assessment (FRA). Who is the RP? This is generally the boss of the organisation using the building and not the landlord, if you are a manager and been passed the health and safety responsibility then you need to make sure you are up to speed on this as you may be deemed the RP. The government has produced guides on DIY FRA’s and these can be downloaded from the communities.gov.uk/fire . The FRA may require you to install a fire alarm with automatic detection, the key to this is making sure that you install the right type for the risk that has been identified, your FRA should provide you with types of coverage such as L1, L2, L3, L4 & L5, all of which impact 44 PAGE |
on the amount of smoke and heat devices that you need in your premises and are key to getting comparative prices. Types of Fire Alarm The document which proscribes the requirements for fire alarms is BS5839 part 1 for commercial premises and part 6 for domestic premises. Professional help If you need help with your FRA then you can use a professional fire risk assessor, who can carry out the FRA for you, just make sure that you check them out, are they qualified and do they have adequate insurance for the advice? The same applies to the Fire Alarm company, make sure that they are third party accredited** to BAFE SP203 or LPS1014 WFP Fire and Security is a specialist in offers professional fire risk assessments along with Fire Alarms, extinguishers, Intruder systems, CCTV and Access Control, the business is based in Stock near Billericay, covering East Anglia, London and the Home Counties. European Parliament has voted for a unified patent scheme which will allow inventors to register their innovation with a single European Union (EU) authority. In the present system they need to register their innovations with each of the 27 member states. The new law will be introduced in 2014. Also, according to the new rules application can be made in one of the three languages, English, French and German. Currently Spain and Italy are outside the new regime as they are opposed to the new rules. The new rules mean innovators will save thousands of pounds in patent translation
costs. This may sound like a bad news for the translation industry and it probably is for translation companies who are patent translation specialists. However it is definitely a good news for the industry as this will support innovation. I personally welcome this new deal. Michel Barnier, the European Commissioner for Internal Market and Services said: “the figures speak for themselves. In the US in 2011, 224,000 patents were granted, in China 172,000, while here in Europe only 62,000
Small businesses display cautious optimism for 2013
Although the optimism is good news for businesses, the FSB said that growth would remain slow in 2013 with small firms and households under pressure from increasing energy prices and inflation.
Small businesses are more confident heading into the New Year than they were this time last year, research from the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has found.
Almost two thirds of respondents said that weak domestic economy was hindering business growth, with consumer demand, fuel costs and access to finance also important factors.
According to a quarterly report from the FSB, small business confidence dropped to -5.6 in the last three months of 2012 - a fall of 1.1 points from the third quarter. While the index remains in negative figures, confidence shows an improvement of 18.8 points compared to the final quarter of 2011 - just as the economy entered a double-dip recession.
European patents were delivered.” The current figure to apply for an EU patent is around £36,000. With the new rules in place EU patents will cost 80% less and this will encourage innovators and innovation in general. And in the long run translation companies will benefit among other industries. www.yildizgoren.wordpress.com Twitter : @yildizgoren www.ttcltd.com Direct Line: 01245 216933
Other findings revealed that: * fewer firms applied for finance in the quarter although a higher proportion were successful - just under half of loan applications were accepted, up from 42.8 per cent in the third quarter. * investment is a priority for around a third of firms in the coming year, helped by the recent
announcement of a tenfold increase in the tax-free annual investment allowance (AIA) to £250,000. National chairman for the FSB, John Walker, said: “There’s no doubt that it is still a tough environment and the Autumn Statement highlighted that it’s going to be tougher for longer. However, small firms want to get on, grow their business and invest.” “However, there is still more to do - especially around accessing finance”, he added. The FSB now wants the Government to address the need for a new business bank to improve competition in the sector and promote alternative sources of finance particularly as many businesses bring forward their investment plans. sorce: www.bird-luckin.co.uk
New Job, New Challenge? Local Co-operative Society, Chelmsford Star is currently on its annual recruitment drive to fill vacancies within its governance structure. Now in its 146th Year with an annual turnover in excess of £90m, the society is one of Mid- Essex’s biggest employers, with a workforce of over 800. The strategy and way forward for this ambitious organisation is determined by a non executive board of 10 Directors, all of whom are voted into their position by the membership. These Directors come from a variety of background; some are employed in commerce, industry or the commerce sector, whilst others are now retired. However, they all have two things in common – a belief in Co-operative
Principles and a desire to work together for the benefit of all Members and the community. They meet monthly in the evening with the Chief Executive Officer, whose role is to guide and advise the Directors before implementing agreed policies. All Directors give at least three hours a week to their position and receive regular training. If you have enthusiasm and experience in matters that could benefit other members, customers or the communities in which it serves then you may be just what the Society is currently looking for. For those that may wish to be involved at a slightly lower tier initially, there are elected places available on both the Membership Committee and Members’ Council.
So, if you need a fresh challenge, believe in the ethics of the Co-operative and are people minded this could be a rewarding option. Why not find out more by contacting the Society for more details or reserve a place at the ‘Meet the Directors’ evening on Tuesday 26th February in the ‘quadrant’ department store, Chelmsford. Doors open at 6.30pm for a 7pm start. Simply ring Rita Knott on 01245 216914 or visit our website www.chelmsfordstar.coop for more details.

Improve Productivity at Work
Between constant meetings, phone calls and emails, staying productive at work can be a challenge. However, the odds of staying productive can be greatly improved by taking some simple steps to lighten your workload.
work. In addition, by starting your day with the most important task, you will increase your productivity and get your day off to a good start.
the email. These seemingly tiny activities during the day can quickly add up to large amounts of time that not only cause your day to slip away but also distract you from
Adam Gurian, president of Timex offers the following tips for workers to make the most of their time at work.
5
Stand up for your phone calls—It is amazing that the simple act of standing during a phone call will actually help shorten the call, thus saving you time. If you are standing you are less likely to be involved in idle chatting and you will get to the point of the conversation faster.
completing your current task. If you are focused on a project, tell yourself that you will not check your email for a set amount of time, so that you get through your activity.
1
Act immediately on phone messages—If you can accomplish a task in just a few minutes, do it. It is one less thing on your to do list and you will have that immediate sense of accomplishment. If you let too many small activities pile up, you will be playing catch up the rest of the day.
2
Get a head-start on tomorrow by preparing before you leave the office today –The simple task of writing a to-do list is one of the most efficient ways of keeping track of your daily work requirements. By writing out a list for tomorrow before you leave the office at night, you will have an immediate head-start on your next day and be ready for your new priorities.
3
Don’t sit at your desk all day—It is important to get up, walk around the office and take a few minutes for a ‘mental break.’ These short breaks will reinvigorate you and help you be more productive in the long term.
4
Organize your tasks—By arranging your workday so that you tackle your most important priorities together, you will save time, be more efficient and ultimately produce higher quality 48 PAGE |
6
Stick to a schedule –If a meeting is scheduled for an hour, do everything possible to keep it to an hour. Once meetings start running long, it directly impacts the rest of your schedule for the day, while also impacting your co-workers. A series of meetings that run long will have a snowball effect throughout the day. Also, if you are not required to be at a meeting and you have a more pressing deadline, do not feel guilty about missing the meeting.
7
Learn to say no –While everyone wants to be a good team player at work, saying no is sometimes the right thing to do. If you are not the best person for an activity, or if you have other pending deadlines, it is OK to turn down a project. However, it is always beneficial to have an alternate solution or suggestion, so that your co-workers have a clear vision of what they will need to do to help move their projects forward.
8
Don’t let email take over your day— We are all so accustomed to email that as soon as we see a new email in our inbox we instinctively click it on, respond and focus on the content of
FEBRUARY 2012 ISSUE 22 | www.Inspiredessex.co.uk
9
Don’t take advantage of Facebook in the office—Social media is a part of all of our daily lives. However, to save time you must have the discipline to not spend large parts of your day seeing what your friends thought of the latest movie release or what they had for dinner last night. Many companies are moving towards banning Facebook in the office, as it is becoming a drain on the workday. If you are allowed on Facebook during the day, be sure to use it as a ‘break’ for just a few minutes, because if it becomes a regular habit, it can easily take over your day and impact the work needed to get done.
10
Use Technology—There are amazing tools that you can use in the office to make you more productive and ultimately save time during the workday. Use GoogleDocs to collaborate with colleagues on documents. Use calendar planning tools to sync up your schedules with colleagues. Use Skype for video conferencing so that you can potentially reduce the need to travel for meetings. Also, work with your IT team to see if they have suggestions on which new technologies can be used to save time. They can be a tremendous resource not only to you but to the entire organization.
