DIRTY SEXY MONEY
the first London Solo Show for the increasingly popular artist, Ben Allenart is proud to present… a newly regenerated area close to the British Museum which is fast becoming one of the most talked-about new art areas in the City. The gallery forms part of a row of traditional, individual shops just a short walk from Oxford Street and Tottenham Court Road.
Fans of Warhol-esque art will love up and coming artist Ben Allen, who created a stir with his solo exhibition DIRTY SEXY MONEY in London and Chelmsford this summer. The entire collection of 46 stunning new works based around today’s modern culture went on sale at the end of June, and was Ben’s biggest collection to date.
In Chelmsford, art lovers were lucky enough to be able to see the collection on show at the TURNER|BARNES|GALLERY at Boyton Hall Farm. DIRTY SEXY MONEY is an exhibition of work in seven individual collections which each reflect the diverse influences Ben has collected throughout his life. Ben has been inspired by everything from weather-swept billboards to the mass production of modern culture, and his work reveals layers of experiences and hidden suggestions, all creating a spontaneous and unpredictable collection.
It took Ben best part of a year of hiding himself away in his Brighton studio to create the collection, and it was unveiled to an appreciative audience in a gallery space on Store Street,
It’s all good, and it’s all natural There’s something about September that makes me think about nature. Whether it’s the crossover between summer (what we’ve had of one) and autumn, the renewal of the seasons, the falling leaves, it all seems very earthy. Beauty products are looking to natural rather than chemical ingredients to tempt us in, and we’ve found some gorgeous, luxury beauty products that conjure up the essence of coming autumn in a really rather beautiful way.
As part of the exhibition, Ben also collaborated with Katie Price on the Diamond Angel artwork which was auctioned to help raise money for The Vision Charity and Autism Independent UK in July.
Katie said; “My day in the studio with Ben was so much fun! I was amazed at the amount of preparation that goes into a piece of work. I was involved in the whole creation of the painting and then Ben and I hand pulled the screen together, which is actually very skilled. I loved it so much I took Harvey back the next day” Ben Allen’s reputation as a hot new artistic talent has been quietly growing on the art scene for the last few years, and after the success of the recent shows those in the know are eagerly awaiting news of his next project. www.turnerbarnesgallery.com

Must Listen! Antony and the Johnsons – Cut the World
It’s definitely one of those memorable musical phenomena – Antony Hegarty’s voice has been described as ‘haunting’, ‘beautiful’ and ‘ethereal’ so you can safely assume that any new album release isn’t going to resemble Nickelback or Slash in vocal style. In 2008, the Hercules & Love Affair song ‘Blind’ took on Antony’s painfully pretty vocals and turned them into something with a slightly dirtier, disco edge, and everybody seemed to love it…but Antony always seemed more than
a footstep outside his comfort zone, and he’s well and truly gone back to beautiful with ‘Cut The World’. The album is essentially a greatest hits collection (except for the title track) accompanied by orchestra, and there are some stunning new arrangements that totally justify the purchase of the album. It was recorded in Copenhagen in 2011 with the Danish National Chamber Orchestra and starts off with a seven minute spoken word piece that meanders around from one existential subject to another (have you ever wondered about Buddha as a mother?) The long, ‘wouldn’t the world be a nicer place if women ran it?’ monologue is definitely an acquired taste.
Have a Read...
Nineteen Eighty-Four ‘reviewed by Chris Moore’
To begin, I should state that this is one of my favourite novels ever. Nineteen Eighty-Four was written by George Orwell and was first published in 1949, and I got my hands on the ‘Penguin Modern Classics’ edition. The story depicts a dystopian vision of Britain, and it is ruled over by the totalitarian authority of Big Brother: the dictator-like government (and the first usage of the term invented by Orwell.) It concentrates on the protagonist named Winston Smith, who works at the Ministry of Truth for the tyrannical system with the task of rewriting the past in order to suit the party. Within the department, he is inundated with the latest news, including the advancements of the
Watch Marley Bob Marley’s musical (and cultural) shadow is so large that the man clearly needed an authoritative documentary portrait--and Marley steps in with all the right stuff to fill the role. Working with official rights to the music and access to Marley’s family and friends, Oscar-winning documentarian Kevin Macdonald creates a thorough account that hits the major points, not stinting on some of the less admirable aspects of Marley’s life (including his brood of children fathered with women other than his patient wife, Rita, whose presence indicates just how much she puts Marley’s legacy above his personal infidelities).
Especially interesting is the sketch of Bob Marley’s youth, as a mixed-race and socially ostracised child from Nine Mile who began to put together a reggae sound with a group of like-minded musicians in Jamaica in the late ‘50s and early ‘60s. That period comes to life, and the account of Marley’s ascent, while familiar from such sagas, has its share of offbeat incidents. His death, at age 36 in 1981, does not dominate the movie, but the music and the concert footage are more than enough to justify the movie’s existence, and Macdonald makes time to include thoughts about politics, ganja smoking, and religion. Probably one more for die-hard Marley fans but it will appeal to anyone with a curiosity about the man behind the legend.

Dramatic, angelic, and definitely one that requites actually listening to, rather than simply putting it on in the background while you read a book…
adopted language “Newspeak,” at one point hearing the boasting fact that the newer editions of Newspeak dictionaries are continuously getting smaller and smaller, which is great for the operations of Big Brother, because it potentially gets rid of words like “Freedom” “Liberty” and “Individual.” But Smith inwardly rebels, and in his quest for truth and individualism, he begins a secret love affair with a fellow-worker, Julia, but soon discovers what the true cost of freedom heart-breakingly entails. This novel holds up as a tour de force of a ‘rage against the machine’ type of imagination and exploration. Given the title and the date it was published, its potency and subversive nature has in no way been eroded by time. It is a mind-shatteringly brilliant masterpiece!
One of the things I definitely, absolutely didn’t want when I went into another relationship was to lose my social life. I’ve been married before, and that marriage became suffocating, with most of my friends and family on his ‘disapprove’ list and the only people we spent time with being each other, and two mutual married friends. Funnily enough, both couples have since divorced and my ex is now living with the female half of the other couple but that’s another column all by itself. I knew that once I’d extricated myself from that horrible, suffocating situation and got myself back on track, there was no way I was ever going to give up my new-found freedom, even if Johnny Depp came back on the market and appeared prostate at my feet declaring undying love. Which he didn’t.

Essex and the Not-so-Single Girl
So I threw myself into socialising as a singleton. I only ever met one man while I was on a girl’s night out, and he was a one-off as it was New Year’s Eve and everyone just wants someone to kiss at midnight, don’t they? But my girl’s nights out were full of fun and laughs, cocktails and wine, and usually resulted in Sundays where I did very little except watch Desperate Housewives on Sky Plus. Funnily enough, I also had two close male friends, who I would go and watch films with, eat pub grub and hang out with and bemoan my singledom to while they told me repeatedly “You’ll find someone” When I met Smut Boy, at first we were in separate towns and he became a part of my extended social life. Then he asked me to move in with him and on the one hand I thought “Yay!” but on the other hand I was scared that it would mean giving up the freedom I’d fought really hard for and loved. So now, after almost a year of living together, I can look back now and say it worked. I’ve given myself even more to keep up with, as I still love going to see the girls and boys and my family in my old town… but I’ve gained a whole new social circle where I live now, too. In the past couple of weeks I’ve somehow managed to end up drinking warm pink wine while sitting on a hay bale at an impromptu barbecue we gate crashed, and
singing along to ‘What’s new, Pussycat’ at Newmarket Nights after losing every single bet we put on the horses. Smut Boy’s friends and family are all lovely, but I’ve always thought it’s important to have separate interests as well as the things we do as a couple, and it works well. I can’t imagine for a minute he would enjoy one of our girls nights out dancing to cheesy 80s music. Although I do think he owes me one after the UFO conference…

KIMBERLY REVEALS BEST BODY SECRETS By ABBY KNIGHT
With rumours of a Girls Aloud reunion on the cards for November, plus a role in new family movie All Stars alongside Ugly Betty’s Ashley Jensen and a best- selling bath and body range, Abby Knight caught up with gorgeous Kimberley Walsh to talk workouts, make-up and how she stays looking good! How do you feel about the shape you’re in right now? “I have definitely noticed how easy it was to stay in shape when I was doing eight shows a week in Shrek! I also try to train at least once or twice a week as it allows me to eat what I want and not feel too guilty.” Do you think there’s more pressure to be slim in the public eye? “Of course there is, although I think it is important to remember that everyone has their own body shape and you really should embrace the good qualities and not fixate on the bad bits however much they bug you!” Which celeb do you think has the perfect body? “I think both J-Lo and Beyoncé have great figures.”
Take us through your typical daily diet
How much exercise do you do? What do you do? “I try to fit in two sessions with my trainer a week, although sometimes with my work schedule I can’t always do it. I like to go running and I do cardio/pump with my trainer.” You’ve said in the past you and Cheryl Cole work out together. What kind of exercise do you both do/enjoy? “We usually do a lot of resistance based toning exercise and some dance based cardio routines. It’s really good fun training with friends it makes it fun and it’s true you do spur each other on.”
so I knew I wanted to incorporate this in the range. My skincare range has been done with the company that make the Girls Aloud lashes, so I wanted to match the packaging so it’s easy for people to find in the shops when they go to look.” What is your favourite product in the range and why? “My favourite product changes daily - the shimmering body oil is great for a red carpet event or night out, the body lotion is perfect for everyday and the body scrub and body butter are ideal for those days you want to pamper yourself a bit.” Who do you think it’s made for?
What kind of gym outfits do you prefer? Tight and revealing or loose and baggy? “It’s got to be loose and baggy all the way for me!” Can you recommend any moves Inspired readers can try at home if they don’t like the gym? “There are lots of moves people can do at home. Lunges and squats are great for toning the legs and bum and these can be done anywhere. Dips are great for the arms and they can be done against the back of a chair, and sit ups can be done on any comfy floor. You just have to remember to do them regularly to get results.”
“I was eating a lot more protein including meat and fish as well as the right balance of carbs to get me through the shows, it was all about keeping energy levels up and I try to stick to it now, too.”
We love your new body care range. Did you have any particular theme when it came to choosing the ingredients and packaging?
What is your food weakness?
“I’ve always loved almond and coconut scents
“It’s got to be chocolate; I think it’s every girl’s weakness.”

“Everyone, we all love to look after our skin and feel our best.” What is your best health secret? And do you have any hero make-up or skin care products you couldn’t live without? “I definitely try to drink lots of water - for so many reasons! I love Mac makeup, Benefit Bad Gal mascara and eyeliner; I get my skin care including moisturiser from Boots and Carita.” What are your top three tips for using the Body Care Range? 1. Rub the body scrub into slightly damp skin to get the best exfoliation. 2. Use the body oil on your arms and legs to create an instant glamorous glow. 3. Allow enough time to pamper yourself with all 4 products, they really complement each other, and will make you feel great for whatever the day throws at you! The Kimberley Walsh Bath and Body Care range in collaboration with Elegant Touch is priced from £7.75 and available exclusively at Superdrug.

Dispel the Myths about Hypnosis and Use it to your Advantage - By Claire Rich. There are many fears and misunderstandings about the use of hypnosis and hypnotherapy that are totally undeserved. The truth is hypnosis is a safe and reliable therapeutic technique which is centuries old. In fact, it has been around since as early as 3000 B.C. Hypnosis can be very useful for the temporary relief of stress and anxiety but not for much else. The really important part is the therapy which takes place whilst you are in the hypnotic state, known as ‘Hypnotherapy’. The Egyptians had knowledge of it and were using hypnotism - this is proven by hieroglyphics found on the tombs of that period. The Greeks and Mayas of South America understood it. Hindu Fakirs, Chinese Teachers of Religion, the Persian Magi, the Celtic Druids and African Witch Doctors also used it. Perhaps it goes back to prehistoric times, handed down by various rituals. The first Hypnotists soon became the first Witch Doctors, Wise Men, Shamans, and so on though their knowledge of the art was jealously guarded, thus shrouding it in mysticism and religion. Even to this day, its true nature seems like a bit of a mystery to most people. Another reason for the lack of knowledge is the inborn trait in humans to fear, ridicule or turn our noses up at that which we don’t understand. Indeed every science in the world has had to travel the same hard road from disbelief through to fear, to common acceptance.
Dispelling the Myths So let’s dispel some of the most common myths now because what actually happens is very normal and certainly non-magical... and we should all be using this powerful tool for our health, wellbeing and success! • There is no such thing as a ‘hypnotised feeling’. • You are fully conscious, alert and aware at all times. • You always retain complete control and can only be hypnotised if you want to be. • You cannot ‘get stuck’, this is quite impossible. • It is a totally natural state of mind that we all go in and out of every day of our lives. • You do not become unconscious or go to sleep. • You retain a full and accurate memory of everything that is said during hypnosis. • You can leave the hypnotic state whenever you wish. • You cannot ‘lose your mind’. • You don’t have to be relaxed for it to work you just have to want to be hypnotised. • It is definitely not connected with the occult in any way. • It is completely safe, natural and drug-free!
The Power of Hypnotherapy Hypnotherapy could help you get your subconscious mind working for you so that you can lead a richer life and achieve your goals easily feeling calm, confident and totally in control. If you’re smart, you will already be thinking about how Hypnotherapy could help you maximise your performance, wellbeing and success so that you can be the best you can be. If you’d like to find out how I could help you, then please call me now on (01245) 444105 to book your ‘Free Initial Consultation’ or visit www.clairerich-therapy.com / www.thewaytoaricherlife.com for more information. Until next time... remember to take time out to relax and unwind because life is all about enjoying the journey, not just getting to the destination. For 1 MONTH
Gym at Home – by Stuart Holroyd So how are you enjoying the (late) summer sunshine? I finally have a tan (although the only way you can tell is from my vest lines!) This month I want to talk about how to put together a home gym area on a tight budget. This is something I have actually done myself in the last two months so all the photos you see are of my own living room. That’s right, my living room is a gym, and yes I know that is very geeky!
The second thing that you need is a utility bench. Not the type that your dad had in the garage and only the spiders got a good workout from. I mean a decent bench with multiple positions and will go from full military position (right up) to a decline position. You also need to make sure that it will be able to hold enough weight for not only you but also your dumb bells. If you are quite strong these weights can be substantial and some cheaper made benches just won’t take it. Check that the weight limit on the bench is 200kg or more. The one you see in the photo cost only £85 (it was reduced by two thirds so save money by shopping around online.)
If you’d like an opportunity to sample personal training for yourself, simply go to our website www.inspiredessex.co.uk to enter your name, address and contact details, and tell us in less than 100 words why you need a personal trainer. GOOD LUCK!
Now the fourth and final piece is my favourite. It is my Dip/Pull-up station (see photo). I know Lee (Inspired owner) hates this piece of equipment as I tend to push him very hard on it! I got this one delivered to my door for £140, which is a huge reduction. Make sure there are two of you to put this together. I did mine on my own and not being the tallest bloke around, found it very hard.
The great thing about technology and leaps forward in manufacturing is that it brings the cost of our household items down. It also means that the expensive equipment that you see in flashy gyms is now a hell of a lot cheaper. I’ve put together a list of what you are going to need and the costs involved., if you want to give the home gym a go yourself. With all these bits strategically placed you will have a bench with more than enough positions to do almost any kind of exercise. You will have the right dumb bells to use with and without the bench and finally the dip/pull-up station to complete your training. Bodyweight training is the oldest and still one of the most effective styles of training around and with pull-ups, chin-ups, dips and press-ups you will get a great all over body workout.
The first thing you’ll need for is the right type of flooring, to protect your equipment and yourself. It’s is an essential but often overlooked part of the workout area. I’ve used jigsaw style mats - yes these are the same as children have in soft play areas except in grown up (boring) colours.
The third item you will need is dumb bells. They are just cast iron plates so it doesn’t really matter about the brand. if it says 5kg then it’s 5kg. Again, by shopping around I found these plates and bars for about £75 and that is more than enough weight to keep you going.
It’s easy to fit and cut into place - if I can do it anyone can! For me to fit out the whole living room area it cost about £75. My downstairs neighbour is very thankful for it!
12 PAGE | SEPTEMBER 2012 ISSUE 17 | www.Inspiredessex.co.uk
I worked out the other day that I can do over 150 exercises with this equipment and my clients use it too (just ask Lee). The whole gym cost me £375. If that sounds a lot, bear in mind that you can quite easily spend £100 on a nice meal out, and your health is priceless, so not a bad deal really! Please by all means get in touch if you have any questions, you will always get a reply to any email you send. The London 2012 Olympic Games has been a huge success, with Great Britain scooping an amazing 65 medals including 29 golds. It encouraged so many people to watch the event who otherwise aren’t usually spectators of sport, but even more exciting than that, it has inspired more to actually engage in a sport.
What are you waiting for?

As our country’s obesity problem seems out of control, the Games will hopefully prove significant in stemming the growth, especially in our younger generation. In my area, I have already noticed more children out on bikes, playing football or tennis. The swimming pools are heaving too! London 2012 also introduced us to sports we may have never come across before. It has given us a wealth of choice – there’s something for everyone – so no excuses not to get out there and try something. It is hoped that role models like Jessica Ennis, Victoria Pendleton and Tom Daley will encourage our future hopefuls that with hard work, determination and passion, they can achieve their dreams. Apart from that, the healthy body image that they promote should inspire young adults to undertake some form of exercise or sport, if only to look and feel great!
Get a tummy like Jess! Did you watch the Olympics and hanker after a gorgeously toned tum like Jessica Ennis? Well, apparently getting a well-honed set of abs like that takes six days a week hard exercise (who knew?) but if you’re looking for a step in the right direction in your firm abs campaign, may we introduce Dr Ceuticals Tummy Tone?
With a little dedication and targeted exercise (you thought you’d got away with that, didn’t you) Tummy Tone should help you get a shapelier silhouette and flatter stomach, even if it’s unlikely to help you win a medal…
Available from leading Boots stores, Price £19.99 for 150ml www.drceuticals.co.uk
Dr Ceuticals Tummy Tone is just the prescription for us mere mortals doing battle with a wobbly waistline and can help bring out your killer abs from where they are hiding under your baggy gym t-shirt. It’s formulated with brown seaweed, proven to have slimming properties and it’s supposed to get right to work on the causes of retained fat. Tummy Tone is clinically proven to slim down the waistlines of mere mortals and reduce production of fat storing cells in just 28 days.

A family remedy. When Linda Russell developed what seemed like an innocuous looking red patch on her face, she had no idea that it would lead her to create a new, natural skincare product that would change her family’s life. The sore patch had grown and become so inflamed that it hurt to smile, and Linda tried everything to treat it, with no luck. Linda, co-founder of JooMo, said: “My existing skin care products seemed to hurt my face so I stopped using them. I went to the doctor and was prescribed steroid cream, but although they helped temporarily, they left my skin worse than ever. I went to Canada on business, and my face ached the whole time – I felt horribly self-conscious meeting people, like I did as a teenager when I had an outbreak of spots.” Linda’s was even prescribed prescribed antifungal tablets, which resulted in another rash, and eventually a hospital specialist diagnosed dermatitis and prescribed a long course of antibiotics, which wasn’t ideal.
Linda’s teenage twin sons, Sam and Kit, had both developed skin problems of their own and in utter desperation Linda spoke to Nick’s dad, also a doctor, who told Linda that the only effective advice he knew of was to stop using anything , including soap, and apply a warm sea salt solution instead. Linda and her sons all took his advice – and it worked! Nick and Linda started to look into the science of skin conditions, so-called ‘natural’ skin remedies and their ingredients. They were horrified that there was virtually nothing available to buy that didn’t contain unpleasant, synthetic ingredients. Linda said: “We decided it must be possible to develop an effective natural face wash which would not only help Sam and Kit’s skin, but would help all teenagers to get their healthy skin back too.” “So convinced were we of the dire need for this that when professional formulators and industry ‘experts’ told us it couldn’t be done, it just made us more determined.”
14 PAGE | SEPTEMBER 2012 ISSUE 17 | www.Inspiredessex.co.uk
Nick found that most skin problems can be cured and prevented from developing in the first place by simply cleansing the skin and restoring its natural environment. He also discovered that simple natural ingredients work better in synergy than they do individually. The SaponinJTM formulation was perfected with willing guinea pigs Sam and Kit’s help and the JooMo Face Wash cured Linda’s skin problem too, including the chronic eczema on her fingers. www.JooMo.coop

Layer up and look the part this autumn - whatever the weather
Autumnal weather can be a bit mixed to say the least. Angela Poplett, Lakeside’s Personal Shopper, shares her top tips for staying stylish on days when blistering heat could quickly turn into torrential rain! “The key is to be prepared for every type of weather. Take lots of clothing options with you so that you can adapt your outfit quickly. “The easiest way to do this is to buy a big bag so you have plenty of space for lots of layers. Satchels are perfect and are really popular this season. My favourites can be found in Jones Bootmaker and House of Fraser at Lakeside, but Primark has some great value satchels, too. “Lots of thin layers are great because they’ll give you warmth but are also easy to carry around. Cotton trousers are a good option because they’re not only cool in the warm weather; they’ll dry quickly if you get caught in a rain shower. Wear them with a vest top or t-shirt and cardigan, plus a short mac or waterproof jacket. “Superdry at Lakeside stocks a wide range of waterproof jackets that fold up small and don’t weigh much in your bag. Or, check out Star by Julien MacDonald in Debenhams and Next at Lakeside for lovely macs. Always keep an umbrella in your bag, too. “All of these layers and sensible items might sound a bit unfashionable, but it’s easy to give Pilot. Tribal heart this outfit a modern day twist. Add a thin belt, print colour baggy a nice necklace and a patterned scarf (Oasis’s top, £19.99 Love Letters range features beautiful scarves) to personalise and lift the look.” For more fashion advice, book a free appointment with Lakeside’s Personal Shopper by visiting www.lakeside.uk.com or following Lakeside on Facebook (www.facebook.com/ lakeside). Lakeside is open from 10am - 10pm weekdays, 9am – 9pm Saturday and 11am – 5pm Sunday.

Inspired readers can claim a discount of 20% on all jewellery kits purchased in September - to receive 20% Off got to www.inspiredessex.co.uk
Every month we bring you a new design idea, an easy and inexpensive way to update an outfit or show you how to make a simple accessory. This month is all about basic jewellery making, we’ve got a great little project for when you have a few hours peace after the kids go back to school. Or you could even do this with older kids, if they love a bit of craft too. The kits are great for making special presents for friends or dare I say it ‘stocking fillers!!’ (Aaaargh I hear you cry... just thinking ahead!) The designs shown here are made using ‘tiger tail’, which comes in many colours, the most common of which is the matte silver. You can simply use it to thread on beads along a whole length or use crimps to hold your design in sections; this allows you to create many design variations. Elizabeth Mulholland has some really fantastic jewellery kits which are perfect for beginners. They all include good quality beads made from glass, gemstones and freshwater pearls, com-
plete with crimps, clasps, ear wires and head pins – and photographic instructions are also included in the kit. You only need basic tools; wire cutters, flat and round-nosed pliers. We have mini sets with all three included for £7.95 but you can get by with household pliers and cutters too, until you decide you love making jewellery so much that you want to get the proper kit! Once you’ve learned the basics you’ll be able to repair your favourite broken pieces or you can take old pieces apart and create new designs, which is really fun and stops you getting bored with your old jewellery. The designs shown have been designed by Elizabeth Mulholland of Bury St Edmunds. Elizabeth Mulholland is a small working studio, you’re welcome to pop in and see me on a Saturday, although week days are by appointment only.

Jewellery is a great way to create an extra income; it is great to sell by party plan or at craft fairs. We offer high discounts on the jewellery and you can set up a new business complete with display board, e-invitations and even a website so friends can purchase online…all from just £100 which generally you would make back within just two parties. Have a Beer! An ice cold beer is just what the doctor ordered when you’re enjoying a barbecue, lounging in a pub garden or on holiday – but did you know that quite apart from the feelgood benefits of a pint, there are actual health benefits too?
Beer can help prevent…. All sorts! There are beneficial nutrients in beer, including folate, a nutrient that can help protect against cancer and is known to prevent birth defects. Beer is also rich in B-vitamins. Other research has shown that beer can help you stave off kidney stones, gallstones and coronary artery disease. Results from some studies have also found that women who drank moderate amounts of beer had lower blood pressure than women who drank spirits or wine.
Beer and Bone Health Perhaps the most promising health benefit associated with beer consumption is its positive effect on your bones. Some types of beer contain a generous amount of a nutrient
called silicon, which helps strengthen your bones and can increase bone-mineral density and therefore reduce your risk of developing osteoporosis. Ales generally have more silicon than lagers do, and beers that have a lot of malt are higher in silicon too. Beers made from a lot of barley that are light in colour will give you the most boneprotecting bang for your buck.
The Bottom Line Although a cold one may not be just be a source of completely empty calories as popular belief would hold, this doesn’t mean that you should start drinking beer to improve your health if you don’t already. And before you get too excited, the fact that beer contains a nutri-
ent that benefits your bones doesn’t mean that you now have an excuse to down an entire sixpack and claim you’re doing it for your health. We all know that booze needs to be respected and consumed in moderation, and although moderate alcohol intake protects your bones, drinking too much alcohol can actually cause bone loss. Lastly, if you don’t drink alcohol, you can get silicon from fruits, vegetables and wholegrains, which we know are chock-full of other beneficial, disease-fighting nutrients. And don’t forget about the other bone-boosting nutrients: calcium and vitamin D. Cheers!

When Murdock London opened their first barbers store in Shoreditch in 2006, they brought the ‘old fashioned ‘male grooming experience back to life and gave discerning gents an alternative to the soulless same-old of unisex hairdressing salons. Murdock gives men the unbridled luxury of a traditional wet shave with all modern pampering extras you’d expect, like facials and hair styling. The décor is masculine and reminiscent of days gone by when barber shops were to be found on every high street. Now Murdock have gone one step further and launched their first body and skincare range with the aim of bringing a little masculine touch in to the world of pampering. The simple packaging has quirky old fashioned
images of quintessentially British sporting activities like rowing and fencing, plus the sartorial British bowler hat and pocket watch. 2012 has seen London not only host the Olympics but also our first ever Men’s Fashion Week and who’d have thought two very different events could pass a baton between each other. Men’s Fashion Week put men’s couture firmly on the map, highlighting that clothing and style is just as important to men now as it is to women. Britain is renowned for its style & the nation did not disappoint as fashion featured heavily throughout The Olympics. It was not only the British athletes’ Stella McCartney designed kit that impressed but the sport-chic style showcased by the supporters too. When you mention ‘sportswear’ people immediately think functional tracksuits and trainers but if this was a sport they’ll find themselves stuck at the preliminaries because fashion has stormed ahead to get gold and prove you no longer have to choose sport or style, the two support each other. The array of colour and designs of clothing that lit up the stadiums was amazing and showed just how easy it is to go from trackside to catwalk.
Team GB Stripe Polo, Next, £35
If like most men you have just three staple wardrobes; work wear, sportswear and casual wear, then be inspired by the triathlon and have a go at wearing all three at once. It not longer needs to be all or nothing so wave goodbye to your full kit, shirt, shorts & socks included and pair a stylish sports polo shirt with your trusty chinos or jeans instead. Sports inspired graphics are on tees and sweatshirts everywhere at the moment and allow you to show your support whilst looking dapper. Remember subtlety is just as effective. Chuck a blazer or leather jacket over your top to smarten up or if you want to look ultra sporty, team your chinos with a baseball style jacket or zip-up retro tracksuit top, as seen on that style icon Becks himself. Layering, over sizing and prints are on trend right now and can help create a relaxed look with not much effort at all. For once there are no rules, you are allowed to mix smart with casual and colours with prints. You are even allowed to wear your swim shorts as day shorts! In sport, colour is important. It is worn by athletes and players to differentiate teams and also by supporters to show unity and pride. But again you don’t have to wear the full sports strip to represent, you can just add these rec-
ognisable colours into your clothing choices. Coloured chinos and tees are an easy way to wear your favourite colours and are commonly available in Blue, Red, Maroon, Green and many other sport related colours. Don’t allow your footwear to let you down, trainers are no longer just for sport but for fashion too. Ensure you’re looking good from head to toe by teaming your trackside look with a pair of fresh trainers. Converse, Vans and Toms are all popular substitutes to your old faithfuls. You can smarten this look up by opting for a pair of boots or deck shoes instead. Simple swaps like this will help differentiate from when you’re pitch or picture ready. This sport influenced smart-casual look can be achieved by all and is sponsored by many stores and designers both high end and high street. Kit yourself out with a quick visit to Topman, Next and JD Sports, the smartest of the sports shops. Office and Sole Trader will ensure your feet step up to the mark and Fred Perry and Ralph Lauren will add some serious class to your look. So all that’s left to be said is ‘Get Ready, Get Set, GO!’

Cycle crazy
Keep the kids on track A mum from Saffron Walden has launched a new online business that will be music to the ears of any parent worried about taming tantrums in tetchy children. Helen Neale has already scooped a number of awards and acclaim in the parenting sector for her brilliant Kiddycharts - printable reward charts that you design yourself to tackle your child’s specific needs. At www.kiddycharts.com there are hundreds of colourful templates and themes to pick from, for every child and every challenge. From teeth brushing to toilet training, good manners to eating up their greens simply pick the behaviour you need to work on, and then upload your little one’s name and picture to truly personalise your reward charts. There are even chore charts for older children. Kiddycharts are the only reward charts recommended by parenting expert Sue Atkins, and they’re suitable for grandparents, child-minders and nannies as well as pre-school childcare settings such as nurseries. They are great for any children who might have extra
Have your little ones been inspired by the Olympics to get their bikes out and ride around like crazy things? Do you often have to nag them to wear their cycle helmets? The fully-moulded animal shaped child’s safety helmets come in three designs, are all fully compliant with British and European safety standard EN1078 CE, and tested and approved to meet German and US safety standards too. The interior shock-absorbent foam is moulded together with the outer shell, for sturdy, high-quality protection that will keep everyone happy. communication needs, using visual aids, and they are great for children diagnosed with autism. Helen came up with the idea for Kiddycharts when traditional reward charts seemed to have no effect at all on her own children. She explained: “KiddyCharts was inspired by my kids, for everyone. I wanted to create charts that were bright, fun, and showed the individuality of each child we have been blessed with. Every child is different, so every chart should be too. KiddyCharts and our loveable yellow star enable you to build your chart for that child’s challenges; using pictures from their life to help them understand the world.” Kiddycharts printable charts are available from £2.99 each and as little as 50p a chart when subscribing. Parents and carers can even download sample free charts from the website simply by registering. Let your Disney-obsessed little girls excel as a Princess on course to find the glass slipper, or kids who love to race around will enjoy being a racing car travelling round a track to get the winner’s cup!

Down and Out Glamour The party is over. It seems this winter our inspiration is coming from the Wall Street Crash rather than the Jazz Age. The opulence we’ve been enjoying in our home décor makes way for a somewhat humbled version of decadence. This year we’ve been greedily embracing the high octane glamour that only Gatsby could inspire. From cocktail culture, to flapper dressers and art deco inspiration we have embraced the roaring twenties as enthusiastically as our American counterparts did at the time. But for the liquor-swiggers and the Charleston dancers came the Wall Street Crash and it seems this winter’s trend is history repeating itself.
This trend focuses on the austerity of recession and there are plenty of hardwearing materials and shades around - with luxury touches. The bright golds and shiny things that we’ve been adorning our living spaces with are pared down to a non-ostentatious dull palette of matte greys paired with rusty greens. Simple furniture in dark colours creates a melancholic appeal and but the plain background is lifted by extravagant and contradictory accessories – a faux-fur throw, a velvet cushion or a floral print. The key to getting this look perfectly on-trend and not just making your rooms look drab is to mismatch items of heritage and utility, lifting and darkness with little sparkles of days gone by.
Bringing the outdoors in runs very much through the heart of this trend; pulling in the inspiration of derelict but grand houses. Use wreaths of wild flowers to adorn walls and subtle animal prints on cushions and in frames adds a pretty touch to an otherwise austere room. The key to this trend is dressing down, while creating something dramatic with colour and personalising the whole thing with occasional glitzy accessories.

Is your home entertainment ‘in need of an update’ The days of a tired looking black plastic stack-stereo system sitting in the corner of a room, and fighting over who gets to watch what on the TV are long gone with the 21st century’s interactive entertainment systems. Some of them can beam your films and music from a smartphone to the TV; others can take care of your home security as well as give you an amazing sound quality while you’re watching Eastenders. The latest systems can look and sound a little confusing to the uninitiated though, so if you’re still struggling with changing your music from CD to MP3, we have some great upgrade ideas for you! We asked Alan Ainslie, manager of NaimNet to explain a bit about multi-room audio … and how the Naimnet system works. “Multi-room audio is not a new concept, but what makes Naim Audio’s NaimNet special is the sound quality and the superior flexibility the system provides.
“A user’s music is centrally stored on a server which has a maximum of six streams. In other words, the system is capable of playing six different musical choices in different rooms around the home. This means you can, for example, play a bedtime lullaby in your toddler’s room, while your teenage son listens to a bit of hip hop or grime in his bedroom and you relive your youth with some eighties cheese in the living room with no loss of quality or distortion. Of course the system can play the same soundtrack across the whole home with the benefit of perfect synchronisation so you will not experience any annoying time lag as you move from room to room.
“A certified installer can easily install the system using standard wiring, and you don’t have to have a big house either.”
“NaimNet will also automatically discover music stored on your iTunes or other computers, and what’s playing on other audio devices or DAB radios with internet connectivity, thus giving the user the option to stream music from these devices to anywhere in the home as well.
“It can also act as a whole-home control management system through which you can control residential lighting, heating and security systems – giving you ultimate control to run and personalise your home. If you already have a home management system installed, NaimNet seamlessly integrates with it, giving the added benefit of being able to enjoy music in legendary Naim quality!”
The system is easy to install if you know what you’re doing, says Alan.
“ As the system is custom designed for each home it is perfect for a modest home or a mansion, and can easily be scaled up to encompass more rooms as needs develop. It is controlled via NaimNet touch screen control pads or iPad and iPhone by downloading the designated app. The result is perfect music synchronisation to suit the needs of the owner.” It’s not just an entertainment system, either. The Naimnet system has other uses.
Beam me up, Twonky… By Rick Schwartz, Director Connected Home Services, Twonky If you haven’t heard about Twonky, the chances are you soon will. The Twonky app is set to revolutionise home entertainment. Getting Twonky in your home is even easier with the launch of myTwonky and mobile apps for Android and iOS. Just create a free Twonky account on my Twonky or through the Twonky Video mobile app, download Twonky 7.0, then connect to your personal media collection and set up your media feeds. “For now the best screen in your house is undoubtedly your 40 inch LCD TV,” says Rick, “ but we all store music, videos and photos on our smartphones. So what happens when your friends are coming round and you want to share an entertaining video you found on YouTube or the latest song release by your favourite band?
“To share these cool videos means crowding around your iPhone or setting up your laptop but wouldn’t it be better to share the video you found on the big TV screen? The free Twonky Beam app lets you do just that. Send any content you have on your phone or you’ve found on online channels like YouTube or Facebook to your TV at the touch of a button. There are no tangled cables or cumbersome docking station and the app works with Android or Apple technology so you can share content wherever you are with everyone, using Twonky as your remote.”
Say for transferring a film or music from a smartphone or another laptop – how would that work?

“To make it clear, Twonky doesn’t transfer media, it beams it. The app acts as a bridge between your devices to let you stream videos and photos to your TV from numerous devices including your smartphone and tablet. Twonky doesn’t move media from device to device in the process of beaming. That said, a web site called myTwonky lets you group your media for easy access. “Nowadays we have so much media and it is stored in many different places. Your photos are on Facebook, your music is on iTunes and you find videos online. With a myTwonky account it’s possible to put all your songs, photos and videos into one library. The technology lets people search for their media whatever device it is stored on, wherever they are in the house and you can stream it from one to another.”
What situations would Twonky be absolutely indispensable for? “You’ve just got back from the holiday of a lifetime – it’s inevitable that you want to share your holiday snaps with your family and friends and everyone is coming round for a show of your travels. Twonky is indispensible for situations where you want to share your photos, videos or music with a group of people. It’s easy to beam the photos to your TV so everyone can see them clearly. Don’t force your family or friends to crowd around a tiny smartphone screen; the best way to view video or photos is on the big screen so send the content there at the touch of a button.
“Better yet, Twonky is great for a party. You can use the queue function to prepare playlists to beam to your music system and once they are lined up you can keep dancing all night. If you don’t have a connected receiver, use a media player like Apple TV to connect to your sound system. Furthermore, although you’ll be controlling the party music from your smartphone, Twonky still enables you to search the Internet on it and take calls.
Simple guide to Twonky – all you need is TV, phone and your favourite video! 1. 2. 3.
“People no longer want to use their devices separately, so an application which connects all of your media is really useful. The notion of the ‘connected home’ is simple, once you have the tools in place to make it happen. The myTwonky site allows you to combine images and video from different mobile devices so with everything in one easy place you no longer need to scour the internet for individual videos or flick through reams of photos on your computer.”
What are the copyright issues (I know with things like iTunes you can have music authorised for several devices).

Make sure your TV is internet-ready or use a tiny and portable Apple TV Download the Twonky Beam app for free using your smartphone or tablet Touch the right-hand side of the screen and swipe to the left to view the Beam controls. Touch ‘Display Devices’ where your TV should be listed. For example, to send video to the ‘kitchen TV’ click on this device. Use Twonky Beam to browse the Internet and select a video, image or song. The beam button will appear over it Just press beam to enjoy it on the TV screen!
(You can also queue up videos to watch by turning on the ‘Beam Queue’ function and the ‘My Media’ button lets you beam content from your mobile device to another device such as a laptop) www.twonky.com
“Not every video you find online will be ‘beamable’ through Twonky but there are no copyright issues. Beaming is like streaming so it doesn’t make any copies of content; it’s just a different way of letting you view it.”

Looking Good
The Garden
Autumn is the new Summer - by Grant Whitaker
Well it’s official. That was the worst summer on record. Festivals washed out, camping trips ruined and countless weddings with tearful brides. And, if your garden’s anything like mine, one of the worst Summer bedding displays I can remember. But all is not lost! With the kids back to school and Christmas fast approaching, rip out those summer displays and turn Autumn into the new Summer in your garden. Start with your hanging baskets. The earlier you can plant these up with Winter pansies, violas, and the new varieties of Winter trailing pansies and violas, the better the display will be in the deepest, darkest dormant months when the plants aren’t growing. People often make the mistake of planting up their Winter baskets at the end of November and expecting the plants to grow and flower. The truth is at this time of year the plants are dormant and won’t grow until it warms up in the Spring.
For patio pots and tubs, I like to use a balanced mix of evergreen shrubs, plants with interesting berries and bright splashes of winter flowering bedding. Try mixing compact Hebes with Christmas Cherry (Solanum) with bold winter flowering Cyclamen to catch the eye. If you’re trying to save a bit of money and can’t be bothered to plant up your tubs with bedding and shrubs this Winter, now is the perfect time to plant Spring bulbs. It seems crazy to be thinking about Daffodils and Tulips in September, but the earlier they’re in, the better they’ll be.
BRING IN THIS ADVERT TO RECEIVE A
You’ll have the pick of the crop at your local garden centre and you can be sure they’ll be fresh as a daisy! If the pots are near the house or you have window boxes, there are now plenty of highly scented Daffodils to choose from. Not only do these give you long-lasting blooms, they have the most amazing strong fragrance, which wouldn’t be out of place on a warm August afternoon in the middle of summer.

Pork tenderloin with British veg in a creamy tarragon & cider sauce. - By Simon Jury
A trip to the local supermarket can prove difficult when you like to buy local or even just British produce. Things seems to be improving though and trying to buy what’s in season can itself inspire your dinner. I had already got my mind set on pork tenderloin for dinner and after walking round the veg section I picked up some British peas, curly kale and shitake mushrooms. A pass by the herb section and fresh tarragon goes in the trolley and that’s the catalyst for dinner, Pork with peas, curly kale & shitake mushrooms in a creamy tarragon & cider sauce.
Ingredients (serves 3):
Once the meat is ready, take it out of the oven and leave to rest. Put the stock back on the heat and bring to a simmer, adding half of the tarragon. Add the peas, kale and mushrooms and heat through for about 2-3 minutes. It may seem like there is too much veg but the kale will wilt and reduce in size. Add the cream and allow to thicken, adding more cream if required, on a medium heat. Add the remainder of the tarragon and remove from the heat. Slice the pork tenderloin and serve in a deep dish with the veg and creamy sauce in a deep plate or pasta dish.
Tip: for added flavour, use a glug of cider in the pan once the pork is browned off before placing it in the oven.

Salt & pepper to season Sweat off the chopped shallots in a tablespoon of oil in a deep frying pan or wok, on a low heat. Just as the shallots start to brown add the cider and pork stock and reduce by about half. While this is reducing trim the tenderloin, removing any excess fat and sinew. Once the stock has reduced, take off the heat and sear the pork tenderloin in a pan with a little seasoning. Once nicely browned all round, cook in the oven on gas mark 6 for about 20 minutes. This should be nice and pink in the middle.

Unquestionably, Volkswagen have always made good cars. Even those that were bad were good, if you can understand that. The last Beetle was a case in point. Not a bad car by any means but not great either. A case of form over function, perhaps. The original car has a long history. First designed by no less a luminary than Dr Ferdinand Porsche at the behest of a certain Herr Hitler, the car was an instant success when introduced in 1938. An air-cooled rear-mounted engine (just like a you-know-what) powered this people’s car. Massively popular in its time and going through many and various iterations, the car’s popularity declined as the motor industry became increasingly modernised and production faltered and stopped around the world; first in Europe and finally in Mexico where the last one rolled of the line in 2003.
Unusually, worldwide, the old car’s production overlapped that of its successor which started production in 1997. Although by now a front engined car based on a Golf platform, the new car strived to emulate the original design, not entirely successfully. Essentially the problem was that VW were trying to fit Golf stuff into an inappropriate body. There were problems. The retro design gave poor access to simple maintenance areas, like the front light bulbs, and there were other mechanical and electrical issues. Clearly however VW decided that another go at it was worthwhile and the latest version is about to hit the streets. And what a great job they’ve made of the design. It is modern yet harks back to the original. From the back you really can see that Porsche heritage. Even the discreet rear wing resembles that on a 993 model Carrera Targa. The whole proportion of the car has been changed as it’s
now wider, longer and lower than it was before, enhanced by a new nose. Why, it has even got vestigial running boards for that real retro feel! In a more modern twist, a buyer can choose to co-ordinate the dash panel colour with the body paint. Air-con is, as ever, available as is the now expected ‘multi-device interface’ and Bluetooth. Just the one engine initially, the highly regarded 1.4 TSI with a punchy 160bhp and the terrific DSG ‘box. A smaller 1.2L comes on stream a bit later, followed by diesels and a bigger petrol unit. The new car apparently has a fairly firm ride which seems to suggest that the more powerful engine options might be a more suitable choice for driving pleasure. No other car looks like a Beetle and that is a strong selling point. If you want a Golf buy a Golf, if you want something different in a modern yet retro body, then the Beetle is the one to buy.

Top online safety Tips from Google and CAB like a name, your date of birth, even a pet’s name…but these are easy to crack as anyone can find this sort of information out fairly easily. Do something that fraudsters won’t expect –take a line from a song, a book or a famous quote, and then use numbers and letters to recreate it. For example 2bornot2btitq’ for ‘to be or not to be…’ – the more unusual your chosen phrase the better.
Dodgy emails Has your email been hacked into lately? Have you ever had your details taken and found someone else happily helping themselves to what’s left in your bank account? Google and Citizen’s Advice have come up with top tips to avoid being scammed by unscrupulous people online.
Perfect passwords We’re always being asked to pick new passwords for things, and remembering them can become really tricky after a while. It’s tempting to pick something easy to remember,
They can be very clever, but avoid the temptation to click on links in emails claiming to be from your bank, BT, utilities or anyone. Banks never ask you for a password by email. Tempting as it is to reply and tell the senders to leave you alone, just delete the offending emails instead. If you reply they will bombard you with more and more spam as they will know your email address is active. And it goes without saying that you should never, ever, ever reply to an email with your bank details, credit card details or any other financial information.
Web security To make sure that a website is secure, look for the “https” and a padlock icon in the URL bar. It’s the only way to make sure that the details you’re typing in are secure and it’s the online equivalent of only talking to the official staff in a high street branch about your account details. Make sure that you always sign out of any sensitive websites and then shut down your browser before you go out. Leaving yourself signed into a bank account or website where there’s personal information about you is the computer equivalent of going out and leaving your front door open…just don’t do it. It also goes without saying that you should avoid using work or public computers for personal transactions wherever possible, and if you have to use them for online shopping or checking a bank account make absolutely sure you’ve logged off before you walk away. Double up your online security by using double verification for accounts like Google and Facebook. This adds another layer of security to your account, usually meaning that you have to also use a phone to sign into an account from another browser. So, t if someone guesses your password, they still can’t get access to your account. For more advice and info: www.google.co.uk/goodtoknow/
When can it be right for companies not to pay tax? “Advances in IT and ‘Cloud’ computing means that companies of all sizes can now base themselves overseas,” he said.
Global IT monster Google will pay only £6 million in tax this year on a turnover of £395 million from its UK operation. Google’s chairman Eric Schmidt says the company could pay more but British tax law won’t let him! When can it be right for off-shore companies not to pay UK tax? “It is inevitable that when it is completely legal not to pay tax many companies will grab the opportunity,” said IT entrepreneur Gary David Smith today. “What is blatantly unfair is that huge, multinational companies can distribute their tax affairs around the globe but small and medium sized companies cannot,” said Mr Smith – who is the co-founder of Prism Total IT Solutions.
“Who’s to say that they are wrong if the system allows them to do this? Companies trading in the UK are still generating capital and providing employment here. What are needed are more incentives to keep UK employers in this country,” said Mr Smith – who added that Prism IT Solutions is based solely in the UK and pays tax here. “A good move would be to remove employer NI contributions for new recruits to all companies that pay UK Corporation tax to help stimulate a recovery in the economy. Taxation can be a powerful tool to help UK business and therefore its economy: there just is not enough being done right now,” he said. Google’s executive chairman Eric Schmidt seems to take a very similar view to Gary David Smith, he said: “We could pay more tax but we would have to do so voluntarily. It’s very good for us [in Britain], but to go back to

shareholders and say ‘We looked at 200 countries but felt sorry for those British people so we want to [pay them more]’ . . . there is probably some law against doing that.” It is worth noting that Google’s contribution to the exchequer has actually risen. Last year, Last year they paid £935,000 tax on £2.39 billion in revenue. “Fully-function virtual office space and remote staff working in the ‘Cloud’ has at least created a level playing field for companies of all sizes,” said Gary David Smith - whose company supplies complete IT support to more than 1000 SME’s in the UK. A spokesperson for Google commented that the company’s workshops helped online businesses to grow and that: “We comply with all the tax rules in the UK. We make a big contribution to the UK economy by employing over a thousand people, helping hundreds of thousands of businesses to grow online and investing millions supporting new tech businesses in East London.”

Use Your Website To Grow Your Business Overseas – Levent Yildizgoren
The internet provides a big opportunity for businesses of all sizes. About one third of the world population has internet access and can be reached easily. So, if you have an existing website promoting or selling your products, you can tap into to this huge global market. You may want to ask why trading overseas? Statistics from the UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) show that companies trading globally improve their productivity by 34%. They are also 12% more likely to survive than those who don’t export. The UKTI statistics also show that businesses believe that exporting leads to innovation. The main point to consider is which country and language to start with? Only 27% of the internet users speak English, and 85% of online customers prefer to make purchases in their own languages. Therefore, in order to attract these non-English speaking users for your products, you need to communicate with them in their respective languages. How do we market our products to other countries we don’t know? Contrary to the common belief, the initial market research can be done on a small budget.
It would make sense to target one of the fastest growing top 9 languages used on the internet. These languages cover over 55% of the entire internet users’ population. In order of growth rate, these languages include Arabic, Russian, Chinese, Portuguese, Spanish, French, German, Korean and Japanese. Then how do you find out if there is a requirement for your products in countries where these languages are spoken? The first method is using your Google Analytics data. This is a free product and will give you plenty of information. Here you can see your visitors’ languages and countries of residence. If you find any users data from any country other than the UK, then this could mean that your product or service has already attracted online users there. This can be a great starting point. If you have no available data, then you may use the criteria below to decide which country may be suitable for your business: • • • •
Then what about the market research without spending a fortune? Start translating your keywords for your services or products. Then setup a small Google AdWords campaign to test the target country and monitor the traffic it generates thereafter to see if it’s worth pursuing further. You can do all of these by yourself or choose an accredited translation company experienced in multilingual SEO to manage it for you. The old saying ‘there’s no such thing as BAD publicity’ - often associated with Phineas T. Barnum, the 19th century American showman. Barnum was implying that literally any type of publicity is good and no publicity at all is bad for business. Barnum was a self-publicist and never missed an opportunity to present his wares to the public. But as a business owner, would you be prepared to publicise something BAD about your company?
FREE PUBLICITY ‘Nowadays companies don’t have vast marketing budgets so PR can be a great way to get your business in the public eye for free’ said Sarah. If you have a good story then local media (radio, TV, newspapers) will be sure to run your feature. The rule here is to always consider three things when you are doing publicity.
1. 2. 3.
REAL RESEARCHED RELEVANT
‘I call this the 3Rs of publicity’ said Sarah. To put it into context, if you wanted to do some publicity about your business then the story must be With over 20 years in PR (Public Relations), our resident Business Brains, Sarah Brockwell of sarahBee marketing gives her 2 pennies on publicity.
1.
REAL: Use real life news about things like your business expanding or a new customer that you have just signed.
2.
RESEARCHED: Always include some facts and figures – quote some statistics about your industry (e.g. there are 48 high street shops in Chelmsford etc)
3.
RELEVANT: If you can tie your story in to something currently in the public eye then all the better (e.g. X Factor/Paralympics/Autumn)
WHICH MEDIA TO CHOOSE Now you just have to target the media. Your story might be strong enough for the national press but chances are, the local press will be more relevant. Find out the name of the Editor and give him a call. Tuesday afternoons are usually a good time to do this. Tell him about your story and ask if he is interested in covering it. If he is, then BINGO – you’re in. He may ask you to send a Press Release. If he does then now might be a good time to enlist the help of an expert to write a professional Press Release. Usually containing about 300 words the fee for this is approximately £150£200. You can have a go at writing a Press Release yourself and don’t forget to include photos too. If you manage to get local radio or television interested in your story then you should also speak to a PR expert who can give you some media training. Most interviews with TV and radio are live and you won’t get a second chance to make a first impression. Your message needs to be clear and concise, but don’t be nervous as it can actually be quite good fun. Don’t forget to inform your relevant Trade Press too. So if you are in the cleaning business then ‘Cleaning Matters’ is the industry mag. for you to target. The main thing to consider when choosing media is ‘what will clients read?’. There is little point getting coverage in a newspaper or magazine, which will not be read by your target audience. Newspapers and magazines will not charge a fee to publish a news feature on your business but they may try and persuade you to take out an ‘Advertisement Feature’ which is like a cross between an advert and a piece of Editorial. These can also work very well but, of course, you will need a budget.

Don’t let your business be IGNORED – get some GOOD publicity – by Sarah Brockwell
Pets
A Big Hello form Millie
What are the signs if my dog has worms?
Dog GPS transmitter It has taken way too long for these to hit the mass market. A dog GPS transmitter is a dog collar with a a GPS system that will show you exactly where your dog is at a given time. Your dog will never get lost or ever go missing again. The Garmin GPS transmitter requires a Garmin Astro 220 receiver so the whole kit can get pretty expensive but this is by far the best one of its kind I have seen to date. There are other cheaper systems that work via an SMS text message but these require a sim card, mobile phone tariff and are pretty slow. By the time you receive the location of your dog he can be quite a way away. There are some even cheaper systems that provide a forwards, backwards, left right direction to your dog with a limited radius.
It’s not easy to know if your dog is infected with worms, particularly in the early stages. However, if severely infected, your dog suffer from vomiting or diarrhoea, and will probably lose weight and condition. Heavy roundworm infections may cause a distended stomach and ‘pot-bellied’ appearance – particularly noticeable in puppies. As the larvae migrate through the puppy, pneumonia and coughing may be seen. Animals may fail to put on weight and severe infestations may be fatal. In dogs, dragging of the bottom along the ground is a sign that is sometimes seen (though this sign may commonly be caused by other conditions e.g. anal gland problems). You may even find segments in your dog or cat’s bedding – they are pale in colour, and about the size of a grain of rice. And, like roundworms, severe infections can cause vomiting or diarrhoea. It’s worth remembering though, that by the time symptoms are visible, the worms have reached maturity, and are already damaging your dog’s health. Many infestations are symptom-less, and so if you don’t treat your pet regularly, it’s fairly likely your dog will have worms, even if there are no signs.
How do I treat worms? Worms are, unfortunately, impossible to prevent. There is no preventative treatment that will stop dog becoming infected. However, there are thankfully a number of very effective products
48 PAGE | SEPTEMBER 2012 ISSUE 17 | www.Inspiredessex.co.uk
that will kill worms. By killing the worms, this will also stop them from producing eggs, or segments, that will infect the environment. Remember however, that most oral worming products are effective at the time of use – they do not have a prolonged action. It is necessary to use a worming treatment regularly – every 3 months is recommended in adult dogs.
DRONTAL PLUS for dogs and cats Millie has just been wormed and we use Drontal Plus for effective treatment of roundworms and tapeworms, a single simple dose that can be used for a all adult dogs. For adult dogs four treatments per year will form the basis of an effective worming regime. Puppies should be treated from the age of 2 weeks, every 2 weeks there after until they are about 3 months of age. With a single dose Drontal controls every type of intestinal worm normally found in cats and dogs in the UK. Drontal Plus for dogs contains pyrantel embonate and febantel which combined have a well documented synergistic effect. Drontal Plus for dogs contain praziquantel an effective and potent weapon against tapeworm. Regular routine worming is important not only for the well being of your pet but also to protect ourselves and our children as we are in close contact with our pets.
