By: Tricia Danflous YOU’VE HEARD IT ONCE, YOU’VE HEARD IT TWICE AND PROBABLY MORE THAN THRICE – AN APPLE A DAY KEEPS THE DOCTOR AWAY. ADD IN GENEROUS SERVINGS OF BROCCOLI AND WHOLE GRAINS,WITH A GLASS OF GREEN TEA, AND YOU HAVE AMMUNITION FOR THE CANCER FIGHT. with a handful of broccoli sprouts on salads or sandwiches for extra carcinogen fighting power. If your sweet tooth is calling, try gingerbread cookies. Ginger root contains curcumin, currently under investigation as a source for minimizing the potential for ovarian cancer and brain tumors. No sweets in your diet? Sprinkle ginger on vegetables or combine with other spices for Asian-inspired dishes. Fighting cancer with super foods does not have to be challenging, tasteless or complicated. The American Cancer Society says use a color guide. Research indicates that colorful, freshly picked foods such as red raspberries, bright blueberries, red and orange peppers, purple eggplant and deep green spinach, for example, are excellent choices. Begin your cancer crusade today. Prepare a meal with one or two super foods and remember what your mother told you - an apple a day keeps the doctor away. You can celebrate a healthier you with a glass of red wine or grape juice – the resveratrol-filled choices are also weapons against cancer.
WHAT TO EAT IF YOU HAVE CANCER: HEALING FOODS THAT BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM by Daniella Chace, MSc, CN
“When my husband was diagnosed with cancer this book had a lot to do with his recovery. I learned to cook with herbs that were helpful with working with chemo and other drugs he was on at the time. The key was cooking with antioxidants to rid the body of the poison pumped in every day during the chemo regimen. Ginger is amazing and kept the nausea at bay. I still use several of the recipes today even though my husband is cancer free.” -Suzanne F.,

healthy diet, healthy weight and regular exercise are the foundation for minimizing the risk for contemporary disorders.Yes, even cancer. Although nutrition-enriched meals cannot cure or guarantee cancer prevention, increasing research indicates that a plant-based diet is significant ammunition to battle cancer. According to American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) and other studies, flavonoids, phenolic acids, antioxidants, curcumin, phytochemicals, folate, sulforaphane, calcium, and reservatol are among substances that may inhibit cancer cell development. The flavonoids and phenolic acid in apples, for example, protect cells and may slow down cancer progression. Supplements are not the answer. AICR indicates the synergy of compounds working together in food is the best. Make room on your plate for superfoods ranging from broccoli and tomatoes, to berries and walnuts. Sulforphene, found in broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables, is connected to the prevention of colon and prostate cancers especially when chewed thoroughly. Entice your family

n 2012, when recording artist, Kathy Phillips, found out she had cancer, she made a bold decision to take her fight public and use her voice to educate women on the importance of early detection. Since August 2012, Kathy has given a candid behind the scenes account of her most vulnerable moments from patient to survivor and she has done it with a smile. Throughout the process, she’s also heightened awareness on the power of caregivers, having a positive outlook, and supporting patients. “Seeing my mom pass away from cancer changed my life,” says Phillips, as she reflected on her own diagnosis. “I spent a lot of time in the Palliative Care Clinic where my mom spent her last few months, and I got to witness first hand how a negative attitude can impact the patient but also the caregiver, too.” When a loved one has been recently diagnosed or is living with cancer, it is often difficult to know how to step up and support them through the challenging times ahead. Although there is no rulebook when it comes to supporting a friend, here are a few words of wisdom from Kathy on how to be a shoulder to lean on: Be patient “Being patient is one of the most important ways you can help someone with their recovery. Remember that they’re going through a tough time digesting the news, dealing with their treatment and recovering from the surgery. Even the simplest things may seem overwhelming at first.”
Reach out to connect Don’t be afraid to reach out to check-in or make plans for the future. Kathy recommends the book, Cancer is a Word, not a Sentence as an excellent tool to help understand patient treatment and what to expect during the process. “Having cancer can make you feel alienated so always reach out,” says Phillips.
Create a support system Providing a solid support system for your loved one will help reassure them that they are not alone. “Don’t ask insensitive questions such as “So, when do you lose your hair?” If you’re not sure how to help, ask. Replenish your energy If you are a Caregiver, find time to meet with friends and have your own support system in place to help you through the journey. It’s a tough job to take on and as much as the patient needs the support, so do you.

internally, too. Read specific product recommendations, or consult a professional to learn how this is done. *Bentonite clay is a medicinal product and should be used with care and caution. For safe use, use in accordance with instructions. Always consult a healthcare professional to assess your individual needs.
TOPICAL USES Kills bacteria Treats eczema & psoriasis Treats acne Removes dead skin cells (exfoliates) Rehydrates and tones skin Cleanses skin Reduces sebum Shrinks & tightens pores Removes toxins and pathogens from skin Reducing the appearance of scars
To make a bentonite clay facial mask you will need to form a thick paste using clay mineral powder and apple cider vinegar (water can be used instead). In a small storage bag, add 2 Tbsps. of clay and 2 Tbsps. of apple cider vinegar or water. Seal the baggie and squish the mixture between your fingers to mix. Once mixed, check the consistency. Paste that is too thick will not spread evenly over skin, and paste that is too runny will not form a mask. Use your fingertips to apply mixture to your face and neck. Allow it to sit for 20 minutes or until the skin feels really tight. Rinse with warm water. Pat dry with a towel. Your face will feel silky smooth. After the mask, add an all-natural moisturizer to your face, like coconut oil. Suggested product: Aztec Secret, Indian Healing Clay
INTERNAL USES Removes toxic metals and chemicals following radiation treatments Promotes healthy bacteria in the digestive system Supports liver detoxification Helps colon cleansing Boosts immune system Whitens teeth, reduces tartar

hat is this amazing wonder remedy? It’s bentonite clay. This all-natural product, derived from ancient volcanic ash, can be used both internally and topically. Bentonite is not a new trend sweeping Hollywood. It has actually been used by the dazzling Queen Cleopatra of ancient Egypt and used in Grecian spas for centuries. So, what’s the secret behind this legendary healing clay? Bentonite contains negatively charged ions, meaning positively charged ions (toxins, bacteria, viruses, heavy metals, etc.) are attracted to them. These havocwreaking, positively charged ions, are bound, captured and deported from the body almost instantly. This process does double duty. Not only does it sweep the skin and body clean, it helps carry oxygen and increase blood circulation. This all-natural product has multiple uses with many-fold benefits. It is fairly inexpensive and very easy to use. Give bentonite clay a try and start healing your body from the inside out. Many people take a whole approach to healing skin by using bentonite

Rebounder Checklist: Here are some questions to ask before you purchase a rebounder. 1. What kind of warranty comes with the rebounder? 2. Is there a suggested weight limit for the rebounder? 3. What type of bounce does the rebounder have: a “soft bounce”, an “easy bounce”, or a firmer bounce? According to healthytrampolines.com, the right rebounder will give you 3G forces when bouncing with your feet never or barely leaving the mat. This is when you know you have the right rebounder that fits your weight and are getting the best results when doing the Health Bounce (see exercise 1). Some rebounders may require you to jump higher and harder, giving fewer bounces and creating a slower hydraulic lymphatic pump. 4. What type of mat does the rebounder have? Rebounders made with poor quality mat materials have a tendency to over stretch or crack. This can unknowingly cause injury to the feet, ankles, knees or back. 5. What type of frame does the rebounder have? An all-steel construction frame is best, as aluminum-made frames can bend or break. 6. Will you need to stow the rebounder away? If so, does the rebounder fold for easy storage? 7. Does the unit come with an instructional DVD to guide you through an exercise routine? 8. If you think you will need a stabilizing bar for support, does the rebounder come with one, or must you purchase it separately? 9. Always read the product reviews on various websites from individuals that have purchased the unit you are considering purchasing. 10. Check out healthytrampolines.com for more details.

INSPIRE HEALTH TIP: FITNESS IS FOR EVERY WOMAN!
If you are new to the rebounder (minitrampoline) you can stick with the health bounce. You will still get many benefits just by including this move in your health regimen. Try the health bounce for two minutes a few times throughout the day. The light bouncing motion is easy on the joints and provides an internal massage, stimulating the lymphatic system to flush toxins and circulate blood flow.
Bonus Move: DONKEY KICKS
Get into a pike position with your hands on the ground and your toes on the trampoline. Bounce by pressing your feet down and then kick your heels to your butt. Continue this motion for 30 seconds.

Aim for Arnica.
Arnica Montana is a natural, herbal anti-inflammatory available in chewable pill form and as a cream. You can apply the topical gel cream to the forehead to relieve headache pain. Also rub the cream along your child’s neck and shoulders to relieve tension. In a recent study in Rheumatology International, the anti-inflammatory effect of Arnica gel was found to be as effective as ibuprofen gel. It is available online and in healthfood stores.

Spritz wit h Lavender.
If your child has trouble falling asleep at night, spritz her pillow case with lavender spray. You can also apply a few drops of essential lavender oil to her pillow case, bed sheets, or blankie. At bath time, use lavender bubble bath, or pour lavender oil in to your child’s bathwater just before bedtime. Lavender promotes a sense of tranquility and relaxation. Even diluted concentrations of essential lavender oil can reduce levels of cortisol, a stressrelated hormone.
Make it Bergamot.
If your child has a low-grade fever due to a cold or the flu, rub him with Bergamot oil. Bergamot oil is a natural antiseptic, and can fight the infection, whether it is viral or bacterial. When dealing with fever, also make sure he is well-hydrated with water. Bergamot oil is available online, and in health-food stores. Note: According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, here’s when you should call the pediatrician: if your child is two months or younger and has a rectal temperature of 100.4 or higher; if he is between three and six months of age and has a fever of 101 or higher; if she is older than six months and has a fever of 103 or higher, or if she has febrile convulsions (seizure).
SHOW SOME LOVE During the early years of a child’s life, genuine love and appropriate physical contact play a vital role in their overall health and wellbeing. In fact, numerous studies indicate that children that are shown affection (appropriately) through hugs and kisses from their parents/caregivers enjoy better health and growth (both mental and physical). Human touch is powerful. Hug and kiss your children every chance you get.

P
lant foods have a particular color for a reason. The brilliant color that nature painted most plants is indicative of the prominent nutrients they possess. Some nutrients, more than others, can be especially beneficial for certain aspects of the human body. Eating a full spectrum of fruits and vegetables may be the best way to nourish and protect the various organ systems of the human body. From brain and heart, from bone to immune health, a colorful plate does much to reduce the risk of disease and support day to day growth and repair. Not only are colorful plant foods extremely nutrient-dense, they are low-calorie, helping you indulge in a guilt-free plate. How can you add more color to your plate? Simple! For the next 30 days, be color conscious. Color your plate by incorporating two to three plants foods in each meal. This will ensure you are adding an array of nutrients to each and every meal. These low-calorie add-ins provide excellent substitutions for nonhealthy items that may be occupying your plate. Add more nutrients and fewer calories to your plate with a color SWAP. Here are a few examples. COLOR SWAP
Side of French fries or chips
Side of green salad
Side of toast
Side of colorful fresh mixed berries
Glass of milk
Kale and seasonal fruit smoothie
White pasta
Green zucchini pasta (see recipe)
Mayo on your sandwich
Mashed creamy green avocado
Soft drink
Fresh squeezed watermelon juice with mint
If you color your plate for the next 30 days, you will likely drop a few pounds, up the nutritional value of meals, and increase your energy level. This 30 day trial can turn into a new healthy lifestyle habit!

ANIMAL Assisted Therapy BY: Mary Tully, Professional Animal Behaviorist

f you’ve ever observed a child’s first interaction with a dog or noticed how the simple act of visiting a zoo can instantly turn an adult into a kid again, you can probably understand why animals would make a very effective partner in a therapy program. That’s exactly the concept behind Animal Assisted Therapy, which is the practice of using animals as a form of patient treatment. Almost any type of animal can be used for this kind of therapy, from dogs and cats to cows and dolphins! So how (and why) does Animal Assisted Therapy work? Usually, the goal is to improve the patient’s social skills, emotional functions, and/or motor skills and the animal acts as a very important motivating factor — during human-dog interactions, our brains, and similarly the brains of animals, are flooded with a rush of oxytocin, a very important hormone known as the “neurochemical of love”, and traditionally associated with the nurturing of one’s offspring. It’s no wonder that interacting with an animal in a clinical setting has been shown to reduce stress, improve mood, reduce

We have animals in our lives for so many different reasons: they comfort us, show us unconditional love, help us make a living, protect us, make us laugh, and sometimes even help us heal. So next time your dog needs to go on a walk or goes through the garbage, take a moment and remember all of the incredible things our animals do for us. I think we owe them a few. t’s a song that makes you feel alive, dance in your seat, and you can remember the words to that song despite 10 years passing. Why is it that you can remember these songs from high school but cannot recall the Pythagorean theory? One theory is that music encompasses several parts of our brain and connects both our right hemisphere melodically and left hemisphere with interpreting lyrics. The more connections, the more deep seeded and powerful the memory recall can be. Music therapy is believed by many to be a magical revelation to persons with traumatic brain injury, affected by stroke, and/or developmental abilities such as autism. Music therapy is often used by speech therapists to help those affected by speech, especially with melodic intonation therapy assisting those with word retrieval and/or fluency difficulties. Participants follow along, singing and reading lyrics challenging abstract thinking skills by discussing the non-literal language and are encouraged to creatively discuss/describe vivid mental pictures of what/who/where these stories take place for increased recall. In those who could not speak at all to those working on memory and other cognitive difficulties, music has helped those speak with greater ease. The argument can stand that if music delivers such incredible results in cases of extreme trauma, why should we not use music on a daily basis to sooth our souls and create harmony within ourselves. Without music, we cannot feel the rhythm of speech and without music there would be only walking around instead of dancing. t r AHTherapy ave you ever been so drawn in to a crafty project that you’ve lost track of time? Were you ever so focused, even for just a minute, that you forgot about everything going on around you and just concentrated on painting, cutting or gluing? Art therapy has been used for years to help children to express emotions. Many children are unable to compose the right words to convey what they feel. Many therapists find that using colors, shapes and pictures greatly help children to be more comfortable and capable with expressing themselves.
Art therapy techniques have also been used with adults to improve multiple mental and physical symptoms such as, reducing pain, anxiety, and stress. Art can be beneficial to those with mental disorders, severe or light emotional abuse, cancer, post-traumatic stress disorders, people who are bipolar, and a variety of other serious ailments. There is a difference between curing and healing. While art may not cure an illness, it can be a coping mechanism. It can calm, distract and refocus the brain and body. This allows the body’s energy to spend time focusing on letting go of stress and healing itself.

n top of coping with a life threatening disease, many breast cancer patients have to contend with total hair loss, lumpectomies, mastectomies (surgical removal of the breast), possible sexual identity issues, and intimacy concerns. A breast cancer diagnosis can be devastating—but, it doesn’t have to be. In fact, many are calling cancer their guru. Like a faithful teacher, cancer is showing women how to be strong, embrace healthy living, and live life to the fullest. Cover girl, Kayle Martin, learned to turn her feelings of being overwhelmed into positive, useful energy. Kayle was determined to give cancer the boot by forging ahead with her cowgirl mentality. For Kayle, a big part of being a cowgirl is the attitude. Growing up riding horses on a farm in rural Northern California, she had always been taught that if she fell off her horse she had to get right back on. A cowgirl spirit is branded with courage. They make no excuses and face life head on. So, after wiping the tears from her cheeks, armed with her indomitable cowgirl spirit, Kayle decided to grab cancer by the horns, one faith-filled day at a time. In addition to chemotherapy, radiation, and a unilateral mastectomy (5 surgeries total), Kayle’s very first step was changing her diet. Kayle, a

I had a very strong will to live.” She feels that she is healthier now than before she had cancer. “Everything I do, everything I put in my body and on my skin, the company I keep, everything supports my new way of life. It’s just better now!” What Kayle—two-time cancer survivor, learned and wants other women to know is you can change your life! You can be healthy and happy! Kayle looked to her own personal heroine, Kris Carr, from the award-winning film “Crazy, Sexy, Cancer” for inspiration. long time vegetarian, cleaned up her diet even more by eliminating dairy, processed sugar, processed foods, and alcohol. She dropped 30 lbs. within a matter of weeks. While working closely with her medical doctor, she also began working with a Naturopath physician having acupuncture, massage therapy, reflexology, colonics, and began gulping down wheat grass like shots of tequila. Although coping with a life threatening illness, Kayle says: “I was thriving. I felt great. I looked great. I was absolutely glowing.” But, why would Kayle say cancer is the best thing that has ever happened to her? For starters, there are more than 2.8 million breast cancer survivors in the United States--Kayle Martin is one of them. In addition to having a new and greater appreciation for life itself, a cancer diagnosis jolted Kayle into a healthier, happier, purpose-driven life. cover story A WHOLE APPROACH TO WELLNESS USING ALTERNATIVE THERAPIES A WHOLE APPROACH TO HEALING CANCER IS BECOMING INCREASINGLY POPULAR. CERTAIN INSTITUTIONS, LIKE CANCER TREATMENT CENTERS OF AMERICA®, ARE TREATING THE WHOLE PERSON BY INCORPORATING NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE, SPIRITUAL SUPPORT, NUTRITION THERAPY, AND MIND-BODY MEDICINE INTO TREATMENT PLANS. Naturopathic medicine teaches prevention and prescribes treatments that promote optimal health through the use of therapeutic methods and modalities which encourage the body to heal itself. Naturopathic methods may include clinical nutrition, herbal medicine, homeopathy, physical medicine, exercise, physical therapy, and hydrotherapy. Naturopathic physicians aim to treat each person individually, considering their physical, mental, emotional, genetic, spiritual, environmental, and social factors. Other resources a naturopath may utilize include: aromatherapy, reflexology, Ayurveda medicine, herbal remedies, massage therapy, exercise (Pilates, yoga, etc.), body work, colonics, oil pulling, acupuncture, chiropractic care, hypnotherapy, emotional counseling, and more. Many of these practices, when used consistently and under the guidance of a professional, can do much to prevent disease, promote healing, and contribute to greater overall health. It is advised that you consult with your medical doctor prior to beginning a naturopathic route.

REFLEXOLOGY Reflexology is a therapeutic treatment in which the practitioner applies pressure to the “reflex” areas on the feet and hands that are associated with corresponding organs, glands, and other parts of the body. It is believed that this technique will promote healing in specific organs via energetic pathways. Benefits: A reflexology session is typically very relaxing. It can improve blood circulation to organs, reduce pain, and encourage overall health.

ACUPUNCTURE Acupuncturists believe that each person has a vital energy, called “qi” (pronounced chi). This energy circulates through twelve invisible energy lines, also known as meridians. Each meridian is associated with a particular organ system. An Acupuncturist inserts needles into specific areas along a meridian to balance and correct any disruptions in the flow of qi. They believe an imbalance in the flow of qi throughout a meridian is how disease begins. Benefits: Acupuncture may release pain-relieving endorphins and stimulate circulation. Many people use acupuncture for sinusitis, joint and muscle pain, asthma, migraines, and to overcome negative side effects associated with certain diseases or ailments such as cancer and stroke. AROMATHERAPY Aromatherapy is the art and science of using naturally extracted aromatic essences from plants, shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, and seeds to balance, harmonize and promote a healthy body, mind and spirit. Aromatherapy can make you feel centered, unifying your physiological, psychological and spiritual processes to enhance healing. Benefits: Certain oils can work to stimulate lymphatic drainage, while others have antibacterial and antifungal properties. Certain scents can help reduce anxiety, alleviate nausea, and help promote rest through relaxation. Some oils work to rejuvenate the mind and body, sharpening memory, and energizing the body. Almost everyone, including cancer patients, can benefit from the nourishing, restorative power of essential oils.
AD THE GREEN COWGIRL (Cancer-kickin’ Green Juice recipe) * Purchase organic veggies when possible and wash thoroughly before use. INGREDIENTS: 2 cucumbers (peel first if not organic) 3-4 stalks of celery 4-5 stalks of kale 4-5 leaves of romaine lettuce small handful of cilantro small handful of parsley 1 lemon or lime (remove rind but leave as much of the white pith as possible. Did you know the pith contains bioflavonoids, which also have cancerfighting properties? Yeehaw!) 1” (or smaller) piece of ginger root
WHAT TO DO: Run all of the above through your favorite juicer (I love my Breville® Icon) in no particular order. If you are new to green juicing you may want to add a low glycemic fruit such as a pear or apple to make the taste more palatable at first. It’s best to drink fresh juice as soon as possible otherwise vital enzymes and nutrients oxidize. If you’re saving some for later, be sure to store in airtight container (such as a mason jar) in refrigerator. Drink within 24 hours.

used as a relaxer to aid in a good night’s sleep. The fresh taste, not unlike apples, is strong but not overpowering or bitter, so it’s a great complement to breakfast toast or fruit. In most cases, chamomile is available in either German or Roman (also called English) varieties. It’s sold as crushed flowers or as a tea infusion, and one tablespoon is enough for one cup. When used over several months, it can even help chronic sleep and stomach issues. Thyme - While the sharp taste and distinct aroma might challenge some tea drinkers, the herb thyme can help reduce coughing, alleviate painful bronchitis symptoms, and relieve common sinus pressure. It works to cleanse the organs of the body, boosting the immune system and also helping in urination and menstruation. When making tea, thyme takes a little time. Use two teaspoons of the dried herb per cup, and steep for ten minutes. For the best results, drink one cup three times a day.

ow modern wellness experts recognize that besides the emotional balm a tea break can provide, some teas can heal everything from an upset stomach, to sleeplessness, to depression. Here are the best three teas to help you get through the symptoms of day-to-day anxiety: Rosemary – Spicy and fragrant, this pert-tasting herbal tea offers relief from headaches and anxiety. Its high doses of calcium and iron make it a great source of minerals, and studies even show it’s rich in antioxidants. In parts of Europe, rosemary is often used to fight indigestion. Some herbal tea users also say it helps improve blood circulation and enhances memory and concentration. Medical studies indicate it can also do much to prevent macular (optical) decay, prevent brain aging, and relieve indigestion. Rosemary tea is a simple recipe – just use one tablespoon of dried rosemary leaves for one cup of tea. Chamomile – One of the most famous teas, the oils of this gentle-tasting brew provide relief from stomach and digestive problems, including colitis. It’s

I was first diagnosed with depression when I was 16. This diagnosis came shortly after my birthday, which was incredibly difficult. I was put on medication to help relieve my suffering. My therapist suggested taking up fitness as a way to help alleviate my symptoms. At this time, I decided to start my blog, Run Therapy (www. runtherapy.co.uk) as a way to keep myself motivated. I enjoy finding and sharing inspiring fitness posts and posting my own journey. My blog grew to be my outlet. thankful for messages I receive from people saying how I’ve inspired them because they too struggle with depression. It’s fulfilling to know that my experiences can help others make positive changes within their own lives. Last October, I ran a half marathon for The Blurt Foundation (www.blurtitout.org), a charity that helps those struggling with depression. It was a way for me to fight back and overcome the illness that broke me down for so many years. Through blogging, I realized I wanted to write inspiring articles on health and wellbeing as a career in the future. I find it bizarre how depression
went from being my weakness to becoming my strength. Even though it was something extremely difficult to go through in my teenage years, it made me the happy woman I am today.”

read them everyday. Whenever you catch yourself having a negative thought, replace it immediately with something positive. Practicing these techniques everyday will eventually change the way you see and think about yourself for good and then reaching your weight-loss goals won’t seem so impossible.
INSPIRE HEALTH TIP: LOVE YOURSELF FIRST
l u f i t u a e B See Yourself
When I’m coaching a client, the very first step in the process is “changing the mind.” If you want to create change, you must begin to see your goal already accomplished. Always view yourself in a positive light. Be your own best friend. You are in control; you can control your thoughts. Change your mind and your body will follow. Use a journal to write your goals and aspirations as though they have already happened. Ex: (I am beautiful. I am confident. I am strong. I am happy).
—the power of visualization By: Robyn Lorando, RD, LDN
ACHIEVING ANY GOAL IN LIFE FIRST STARTS WITH A VISION. RESEARCH SHOWS THAT BY FIRST VISUALIZING A TASK YOU CAN INCREASE THE LIKELIHOOD OF ITS COMPLETION. isualization is a powerful tool! It can help you place positive thoughts into your subconscious and give you the confidence to carry out goals. Like any other goals, visualization and positive thinking are essential tools for successful weight-loss. Trying to eat right and exercise while thinking you are going to fail will result in just that. Nobody has ever lost weight and kept it off without first believing they could do it. Admittedly, changing the way you see and think about yourself is not easy and does not happen overnight; it does take some practice. Start with a positive vision in your mind. Envision yourself in that special outfit that you would never have worn before and imagine how great you will feel wearing it. Picture yourself reading a menu, ordering the healthy option, and feeling proud of your decision. Think of it as daydreaming with a purpose! Get rid of the negativity taking up prime real estate in your subconscious by writing down positive thoughts related to your goals. Write them in the present tense rather than future. For example, “I am happy and healthy,” or “I love the way I look and the skin I am in.” Keep these affirmations in a visible place and

plunge!
BUT SHOULD IT BE HOT OR COLD?
By: Michele Robert Poche

OOKING FOR A WAY TO RELAX? INCREASE CIRCULATION? BOOST IMMUNITIES? WOULD YOU BELIEVE ME IF I SAID YOU COULD ACCOMPLISH ALL OF THAT WITH SOMETHING AS SIMPLE AS WATER? YOU JUST NEED TO KNOW HOW TO USE IT. Across the planet, water has been associated with healing and physical/ mental well-being for, as long as human beings have kept records. Hydrotherapy has been credited with curing everything from indigestion to cancer. Sound too good to be true? Maybe it’s time for you to give it a try. Let’s start with the basics. Soaking in a natural hot spring, mineral bath, or even your tub at home is a great way to unwind after a strenuous activity or a long day. The warm water soothes aching muscles allowing a feeling of total relaxation to (literally) wash over you.
34
INSPIRE HEALTH
Benefits of a HOT soak: Reduces the effects of stress on the body Nourishes the skin and body by flushing toxins out through the pores Dilates blood vessels thus lowering blood pressure Decreases insomnia (when timed within 2 hours of bedtime) Water can also offer mobility to those limited by arthritis and other physical ailments. While the warmth relaxes the muscles, the buoyancy supports the body reducing stress on joints and allowing for freer movement. Further, minerals found in hot springs contain natural curatives like calcium, magnesium and lithium which aid in bone, muscle and brain function … to name only a few of their benefits. Now let’s take it up a notch. While hot water therapies have always been embraced in this country, Americans are just starting to dive in to the idea of cold water plunges. Other cultures around the world have been
using them for centuries to heal, rejuvenate and promote health and vitality. Benefits of a COLD plunge: Awakens the system better than a cup of coffee Flushes the organs by contracting muscles to eliminate toxins Increases circulation Stimulates the release of norepinephrine (a stress hormone) and epinephrine (adrenaline) to energize the body The good news here is that less is more. It’s not an endurance test, so you need only expose yourself to the low temperatures for 30-60 seconds to reap the health benefits. What other physical exercise delivers so quickly? Seriously, where’s the nearest creek? Cannonball!

his vivid yellow spice—a relative of ginger that’s found in curry powder—is a powerful antioxidant that protects cells from the harmful effects of free radicals (cancer causing agents). It’s also a potent anti-inflammatory, working to calm chronic inflammation in the body often caused by stress, poor diet and lack of exercise. Both free-radical damage and ongoing inflammation are believed to underlie many diseases of aging, including cancer, Alzheimer’s, and arthritis. Turmeric’s key healing component is curcumin. Research shows many curcumin benefits. For example, it’s been shown to block the accumulation of beta-amyloid plaques, sticky substances that cause Alzheimer’s.
36
INSPIRE HEALTH
Curcumin also shows promise as a cancer fighter, helping to prevent and shrink several types of tumors in animals, including breast, prostate, and colon cancers. Human studies are just ramping up, but early results suggest similar benefits in people. Another recent study found that curcumin supplements relieve the pain, swelling and inflammation of rheumatoid arthritis better than NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs)—and with fewer side effects. In addition, curcumin is being studied for use against osteoporosis, heart disease, Parkinson’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and several other conditions. Of course, turmeric alone won’t keep you young. You also need plenty of exercise, healthy foods and time to nurture your emotional and spiritual growth. Adding more of this pungent spice to your diet can contribute to a longer, healthier, disease-free life.
Spice up your life Eat plenty of curried Indian and Asian dishes. Sprinkle ground turmeric or fresh turmeric root (available at specialty food stores) into any soup, stew and other favorite recipe for a flavorful zing. Try turmeric tea. Buy packaged tea bags or make your own by boiling water and adding a teaspoon of ground turmeric. Simmer, strain, and add milk, honey or lemon. If you’re not crazy about turmeric’s peppery ginger taste, take a turmeric or curcumin supplement (check your local health food store).
