It is what gets us from tragedy to triumph. It gets us through

and how a true friend can help support and love us through it all.

The amazing women in the article “The Truth in our Scars”

have been through cancer, a horrific car accident, and even being

burned with acid in Uganda during domestic violence. Yet, they are

survivors with a passion for helping others see their own beauty inside. During our makeovers with these incredible ladies, we were able to to show our readers around the world that even after all the pain, they

In “Watch Her Werk,” the stunning powerhouse boss ladies are in their work environments, mod-

eling beautiful designs and talking about work life/balance. Many hope for true balance. To support this

goal, we provide self-care tips such as women’s retreats and teach you how to manifest your mission and tap into your own intuition.

There is hope. Great hope for a future for each of us. It radiates positivity and gratitude for all the

blessings in our lives. It is in the empowering stories of others who have struggled and won that you can find that ever-inspiring hope!

CAT & NAT Talk #MOMTRUTHS

H

Interviewed by Dr. Shellie Hipsky

undreds of millions of views from around the world of Cat & Nat’s #MOMTRUTH viral videos showed Inspiring Lives Magazine that these mommas have something relatable to tell us! I had a blast shooting the cover with them and taking my team to the Cat & Nat FUN Show where these ladies get moms to let their hair down, have a good night out with friends, and escape the push to be a “perfect mom,” perpetuated in social and traditional media. Inspiring Lives Magazine loves how Cat & Nat say what they are truly thinking from a mom perspective and share it with the TODAYShow.com community and the world. DR. SHELLIE: Why #MOMTRUTHS?

NAT: When Cat and I would get in the car together each morning we would grab coffee, take a deep breath, and just talk about the night and morning we had. CAT: This is a true story: one day in the car, I looked at Nat and said, “We need to do a video series called #MOMTRUTHS!” We were sharing them online but they didn't have a name. It just felt so right because it the raw honest truth of it all, when no one was really having an honest conversation. NAT: When we would talk in the car, we saw similarities in what we were dealing with, so we realized that, as moms, we were facing the same challenges, pressures, and joys. These honest conversations became our #MOMTRUTHS, and we knew other moms needed to know they too were not alone. DR. SHELLIE: What is the most challenging part of being a modern day mom?

Photo: Alicia Thurston

NAT: With all the different parenting styles, random studies, research papers, diagnoses, and just overall judgments from everyone and their mother, it is hard to just follow your instincts and feel confident in your own choices in parenting. CAT: The pressure! The pressure of trying to do it all, be it all, and be "right" in it all. Social media is like a constant re-

minder of how you are doing it wrong, and how everyone else is so blissful and happy. DR. SHELLIE: Let’s talk “Mom Guilt” since I just experienced it today. What makes you feel it, and how do you deal?

NAT: I try to practice being OK with the kind of mom I am each and every day. I could beat myself up about every choice I make, or I could remind myself I am doing my best and that my kids are happy and so am I. That will just have to be good enough. CAT: I feel it every day in some capacity. But then I go back to the root of why we started this. If you think about what you remember of your own mom, was she happy? How did she make you feel? That is what your kids will remember. Not the hours you worked or didn't work. It’s the way you made them feel. DR. SHELLIE: What is your favorite part of being a mom? CAT: The kids themselves. I mean, they have each other, love each other, and get to do life together. To watch them grow and become people is mind blowing. There is nothing as pure as a child. True happiness, kindness, and unconditional love lies within a child.

NAT: I love having my own little team. My four kids are my people wherever I go, and whatever I do, they are behind me (and all over me). I love watching them learn new things, and I love feeling proud of them. I love being the one they turn to in life for direction, and I love leading them. I also love watching how strong I can be as a woman and how much I can manage in life. I’m proud of myself too. DR. SHELLIE: You are famous for your friendship. What makes your relationship work? CAT: For some reason, we just do. We are simpatico. It was meant to be. She is just my person.

NAT: We have each other’s back without judgment in all aspects of life every day. We are each other’s support, inspiration, entertainment and strength. This relationship is unique, it’s equal, and it’s special.

NAT: We have each other’s back without judgment in all aspects of life every day. We are each other’s support, inspiration, entertainment, and strength. This relationship is unique, it’s equal, and it’s special.

DR. SHELLIE: What are your top 5 survival tips for mommying? CAT: The truth? (laughs her infectious laugh) Ok, let's get real here. 1) Screen time: It may sound horrible, but I swear from occupying the little ones while I handle homework with the older one or just buying me a minute to make dinner, screen time is life. 2) Laughing: If you just step back and see the insanity that is called “motherhood.” I mean the embarrassing stories we could all tell, it is almost unbelievably funny (maybe not in the moment but for sure down the road). 3) Messy buns and leggings: Yup. Truth. 4) This community: Honestly being able to share the hard truth with over a million moms has been so humbling and helpful. When you share the truth, and people thank you for it, it is unreal. 5) Confidence in yourself: Just knowing you are doing a good job even though it never feels like it.

DR. SHELLIE: You just got back from a double-family trip to Mexico. What are your suggestions for traveling with kids?

“We are each other’s support, inspiration, entertainment and strength.”

NAT: 1) Don’t do it alone: Get local mom friends with kids the same age as your kids. No one gets it like another mom gets it. 2) Don’t compare yourself to other moms and other families: Your family is one of a kind, and no two households work the same. Decide with your partner what kind of family you want to be, and go with that. 3) Go out with your girls every now and then: a movie, cocktails, dinner, and a fun show (yes, The Cat and Nat FUN Show) or any other entertainment that allows you to get out of the house and remind yourself that you still matter and you deserve a break and some fun. 4) Do not be too hard on yourself: We are all doing the best we can and tomorrow is always a new day. “Let it go,” Elsa, “let it go!” 5) Ask for help: Don’t hesitate, and don’t feel bad. Hubby, grandparents, babysitters, and friends. Lean on your community. That is why they are there. DR. SHELLIE: What is it like to go on tour with your BFF? CAT: AMAZING! 12

InspiringLivesMagazine.com

SUMMER 2018

CAT: It is not a vacation; it is a re-location with lots of hiccups and tantrums and all the things that come with kids. Try and remember they won't remember any of that, they will remember being with the family and having fun. It will never be perfect, and often is harder than being home. But they won't always remember home… they will always remember that trip.

NAT: Ease up on any specific expectations you might have. The kids are little, and they can’t live up to those dreams we had of perfect photos on the beach, quiet dinners, endlessly happy babies, and romantic glasses of wine on the balconies when the kids go to sleep like in the advertisements. It will be an unpredictable time together but you will make memories. Relax, and enjoy. DR. SHELLIE: What is most inspiring about Nat? CAT: She is the most fun mom I know. Dance parties and loud music, candy, late night movie nights. Nat has taught me to celebrate the utter chaos. DR. SHELLIE: What is most inspiring about Cat? NAT: Cat is loyal, thoughtful, reliable, hard-working, fun, and smart. She is a confident mom and has a positive energy that is contagious. I just love that girl! DR. SHELLIE: What #MOMTRUTHS words of wisdom do you want to leave Inspiring Lives Magazine with? CAT: All that your kids want is you. Not the fit mom, not the Pinterest mom, not the PTA mom, not every other mom you think you should be. All they want is you, so be the happiest you there ever was. NAT: Moms—life is messy, motherhood is hard, kids are confusing, and marriage is weird. Don’t take it all too seriously. Do your best, and laugh at this tiny disaster you created— it’s all yours! n

DEAR AMERICA, Thank you for stepping forward in a huge way. I know we have a ways to go, but as Lao Tzu wisely said, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” For us to progress, we have to continue this momentum started by the March For Our Lives, because this was not just a single step. This was a leap! We cannot fall back and forget what we have done here on March 24, 2018. We cannot forget why we’re doing this or who we are doing this for. And I am thankful to say, so far we haven’t, so thank you, America. If you look at what we have done, not only have we gotten our voices heard to make a change in our laws to end gun violence, we stood together in unity with the world to create a positive impact. We marched, not only for our own family and friends, but we marched for ALL people that day. We were selfless, we were brave, we were awake, we were determined, and we still are! And if you’re fire has dimmed at all, get it roaring again because this is just the beginning! We must stay kind, courageous, and curious. We must explore what we don’t understand so we may grasp what others hold dear and respect the differences that make us so incredibly unique. We must lead with compassion, truth, and love. And I say “Love” with some hesitation because I know that it is uncomfortable for some, but it is impossible to grow in a comfort zone. And Love truly is the only path to peace, not fear or tolerance. The most successful and happy people I know love BIG. We must lead with that if we are to create a world of peace that helps itself heal and evolve to its highest potential so future generations may prosper and thrive in happiness. The March for Our Lives on March 24, 2018, was a milestone for the United States of America. It was the largest youth-led movement since the Vietnam War protests! What an honor it was to be an organizer of the Oakland event, which gathered almost 4,000 people. This nationwide march brought millions together, standing for one purpose. For me, that speaks louder than any amount of chants or speeches. It was proof that we can come together in diversity and create something powerful to change the world for the better. This march was much more than protesting gun violence. It was a chance for the people of America to stand as one for the first time in a very long time, when we desperately needed to. This march reminded many that we are all Human and inspired me to Be the Change! So I will leave you with this, America: We cannot stand alone. We are the United States. It’s time we start proving that, and one day it shall be the world. Thank you for what you have done, are doing, and will do. Genuinely and with gratitude,

MANIFESTING YOUR MISSION WITH BRIANNA BROWN

by Jearlean Taylor as told to Dr. Shellie Hipsky | Photographs by Epic Media Photography | Hair and Makeup by Takia Ross

M

y personal journey started when I was diagnosed with a rare form of vaginal cancer (rhabdomyosarcoma) at 3 years old. I was cancer-free a year after my diagnosis but left with a permanent colostomy and urostomy, so I wear two ostomy bags to collect the diverted stool or urine. “Ostomy” refers to the surgically created openings on each side of my stomach, near the navel, for the discharge of body wastes. My life has proven to be a journey of unexpected challenges. As a child, body image didn’t concern me, but as a teenager and an adult, I struggled with self-pity, depression, and low self-esteem. I was always thinking, “Why me?” I never expressed how I felt, even to my parents. My ostomy bags aren’t visible, even when someone is close to me; however, I often wondered if people could somehow tell and if they were staring.

16

InspiringLivesMagazine.com

I didn’t feel psychologically prepared for this life. I knew I was blessed that my cancer has been in remission since I was 4, and my parents taught me to love who God created me to be. However, my body image caused me to struggle. As a professional model today, I am grateful my ostomy bags haven’t been an issue in the fashion world. I was welltrained and ready to hit the runway when I started, but I was still scared and insecure. I hoped no one would ask me to model a two-piece bathing suit. I had to figure out how to disguise my bags and still be the fabulous fashion model I wanted to be. So I did. For fashion shows or photo shoots, I never leave home without my thong girdles to keep my bags secure and in place. My “secret” undergarments help this super model be fierce. The fashion industry has standards for size, shape, and looks, but why do we

SUMMER 2018

have to be defined by those standards? The essence of who we are is within. Models come in all shapes and sizes, and our character, personality, confidence, and self-love are what make us truly beautiful. I have been a fashion model for 17 years with two ostomy bags. My positive body image is a reflection of inner beauty on and off the runway. Modeling has helped my self-esteem and allows me to step out of my comfort zone. I love it! For me, modeling is fun, exciting, and challenging, just like life. I am 50 years old, and I won’t stop being the best fashion model I can be. For that little girl who “looks” like me, I would tell her that over 750,000 Americans are living with an ostomy, and she is not alone. Brianna, can you tell us a little about The New Hollywood and how you got started? The New Hollywood is a non-profit created to support socially conscious storytellers and change makers. Our mission is to help people through mentorship programs, goal setting, and accountability. The inspiration came from the necessity and search for a like-minded tribe, which started with women inspiring and building each other up. Now The New Hollywood has transformed into a universal platform. I didn’t want my creativity to be dictated—I wanted to give in my own way. So,

I decided to create something that helps others the way I thought would benefit them the most. I have a knack for making complicated things concise. I believe that my inconsistent job setting helped me build a lot of different skill sets, which helped me along this path. “Never before have so many tools been accessible to help you be successful, and never before has it been easier to be distracted and stay in victimhood.” We are accustomed to so many things that are normalized in society but are actually addictions, a way to feel numb and avoid facing something in our lives. Every moment is our choice, but we are being influenced without even realizing it. Many people have this illusion that we can immediately figure everything out and have all the answers, but life is not that simple. Personal development takes learning from others, listening, and being open—noticing what does and does not resonate in your life. We need to teach people that it’s ok to fall down and mess up. And like going into an algebra class, you are not going to know how to do everything in one day. As adults, we have high expectations of ourselves—we think if we don’t know it all,

rianna Brown made her way from Apple Valley, Minn., to LA when she was 19. But she began her acting journey years before, at the age of just 14, as she sought and found representation where she lived. Brown said she can clearly remember the moment when she felt inspired to act and why, telling her mother on a car ride home, “I want to be an actor because actors can be more powerful than politicians.” Looking back on her bold jump into the business at such a young age, Brown said, “I knew that if I didn’t try I would always regret it, and I did not want that to be my story.” Now, shining brighter than ever in her 30s, she has achieved the lifestyle of a successful Hollywood actress, founder of the non-profit The New Hollywood, and author of her annual guidebook Manifesting Your Mission. You will see her most recent screen work on The CW show, Dynasty, which is only one of many television shows she’s played a part in.

Is Your Past Still Negatively Affecting Your Life? by Cynthia Mazzaferro

H

ow often do you have negative or self-limiting thoughts that continue to make you feel small, unimportant, disrespected, unheard, unloved, unhappy, depressed, and dissatisfied

with life? You are not alone! Everyone has negative thoughts about who and what you are and what you’re able to be. These subconscious beliefs and memories originate during our youngest years—when we are innocent, vulnerable, and influenced by so many. Often it’s our perception, based on that time, which is internalized so we see everything through that same limited vision. The weight of these repressed, harmful memories can hold you captive, negatively impacting you both internally and externally. Some information that we experienced as youngsters is critical and helpful to our survival. It’s how we learn rules, expectations, laws, morals, and ways to stay safe. We’ve learned not to touch a hot stove, or a lit match, and to look both ways before we cross a street. Other childhood experiences of being/feeling threatened, scared, unheard, unloved, not good enough, distrustful, powerless, angry, embarrassed, and many others can have a long-lasting impact on you and your future. The brain always wants to protect you, even if that means reminding us about our failures, loss, pain, disappointments, and negative outcomes. However, this can lead to devastating and often repetitive negative patterns. Look at these amazing statistics: • We have 60,000 thoughts per day. • 80% of those thoughts are negative. • 95% of them are the same thoughts we had the day before. How we view ourselves, others, environment, and circumstances are often driven by these self-limiting and self-created thoughts and memories. We carry our childhood wounds into adulthood. Our youngest years have profound implications in our emotional and mental health because our brains weren’t

mature enough to draw accurate inferences about the stimuli we received and/or perceived. For example, if you felt unloved or that you didn’t belong as a child, you may now have relationship or intimacy problems. Or, if you frequently felt anger or resentment, you may now exhibit irresponsible behaviors or have an unsafe lifestyle today. When we experience wounds as children, we create defense mechanisms to respond to the pain, which may include isolation, avoidance, silence, submission, anger, verbal or physical aggression toward self or others, drugs, addictions, sadness, victimhood mentality, and much more. Eventually, we must disassemble these walls to address the root causes of our pain and find solutions that promote health and happiness. You are so much more than any of the untruths you’ve come to believe. Understanding why you think, feel, act and believe the way you do—without blaming someone else—gives us enlightening and motivating information that can empower you to step into your greatness and live a purpose-filled, inspirational, and joy-filled life. The past can no longer hurt you unless you give it the power to! The amazing process that I share in my book Powerful Beyond Measure allows you to identify childhood wounds and take steps to change the behavior, belief, and outcomes. As you release and heal the emotional residue from the past, learn to love yourself, and claim your inner power in the present, you can then envision and live a future of unbounded possibilities. You are Powerful Beyond Measure! To help release that which no longer serves you, download your free guided meditation, Heart Home of Healing Meditation, at cynthiamazzaferro.com/hearthomeofhealingmeditation/. THE SACRED GIFT OF

INTUITION by Darieth Chisolm

I

am so fascinated by a woman who can make a solid decision. A woman who stands in her power, in her faith, in her belief in herself and her highest desires. Decision-making is key in every successful outcome. A woman who can decide quickly, even with doubts, worries, and fears, is always one step closer to making her dreams come true. Admittedly, making solid decisions used to make me squeamish. No, sometimes, sick to my stomach. The fear that I could be making a big mistake and getting it all wrong always ruled the day. To make matters worse, when I turned to others for advice, it seemed to only complicate my decision-making process. Until one day, I learned to trust my intuition. I have discovered that our intuition engages our body, mind, and spirit for the decision-making process. When we do, it makes us feel more expansive, excited, and less nervous about the outcome of our decision. The word “intuition” originally came from the Latin word intueri, which means “to contemplate” or “to look within.” Without learning how to look within and listen to our intuition, we tend to rely solely on the limited rational mind or external input from others, which can quickly lead us astray. Many scientists and researchers are now referring to intuition as the highest form of intelligence we possess. In other words, intuition is no

longer limited to the new age world or magical thought; it is increasingly being seen as a legitimate way to make judgments and decisions. The key to mastering what I consider the sacred gift of intuition is learning to listen to it. The more attention you give it, the more powerful and accurate it will become. Meditation can help you listen to your intuition more closely because it connects you with your inner being physically, psychologically, and spiritually. Taking time to reflect and simply relax can also help it rise to the surface. Often, we run from one place to another with an endless to-do list; only when we stop running can our mind catch up. That's when it’s

time to take a moment to truly listen to your intuition and listen to your heart. Finally allowing myself to listen to myself has felt so natural. Most decisions I make these days come from a deep trust in my authentic self. Because I no longer spend my time judging myself, I am also more accepting of others. I am calm, open and much more effective. I see my strengths, and I know who I am: a loving person who desires to be more connected to others. I believe it’s important for you to discover and use your intuition. It’s like a muscle—the more you use it, the stronger it becomes. Because whatever you decide to go for this year, you are the only person you need to be to achieve what you desire. There is no more advantageous way to live than by honoring your true self. The power lies in looking in the mirror and thinking, “You know what? I really love myself.” The most important thing you can do for yourself this summer is to get in touch with who you are and be that person in everything you do on a daily basis. If you do, you’re going to experience a lot of joy and success. So let’s all stop trying to hide from our intuition and power, and the gift that it offers us. Let us always endeavor to be centered, peaceful, productive and loving, remembering to include ourselves among those we love, support, and show up for. n

GOLDEN INSPIRATION by Rachael Rennebeck Amanda Kessel is considered athletic royalty for her representation of the United States, not to mention her dominance in a male-populated sport, and this hockey heroine is only 26. Just like most younger siblings, Kessel grew up playing the role of goalie when playing hockey with her older brothers, including Pittsburgh Penguins superstar Phil Kessel, in Madison, Wisc., where she grew up. After realizing that hockey was the sport she actually wanted to play, Kessel went on to play on several male teams simply because not many females were interested in such a physical sport. For Kessel though, that was the norm. Kessel went on to play for The University of Minnesota Golden Gophers, New York Riveters, and two Olympic teams. While her goal and assist statistics continue to impress avid hockey fans, her feat in the Olympics will remain the most

known. Regulation time had ended with a 2-2 tie, and when a 20-minute overtime didn't produce a goal, a shootout also ended in a tie. Then, a sudden-death shootout ended with the United States as the gold medal winners. Kessel said that her love of the game drives and inspires her to never give up on her dreams. While she believes that pregame rituals would more distract from the game than help, Kessel enjoys pregame pump-up music like “The Middle” by Zedd, Maren Morris, or Grey to prepare her. Now that she has made a name for herself—and has the gold medal to prove her amazing abilities—Kessel stays close with her family by making frequent visits home and coordinating them with her brothers. n

Girls of Steel 3504 is an all-girls high school robotics team founded in 2010 and based out of Carnegie Mellon University’s (Pittsburgh, Pa.) Field Robotics Center with 52 team members from over 20 schools in the Greater Pittsburgh area. The team competes in the FIRST® Robotics Competition (FRC) level of FIRST® (For the Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology). Each year, FRC allots a six-week build season in which teams plan, design, build, and code a fully functioning robot to fulfill the specifications of the game, which changes each year. This competition season, Girls of Steel earned a spot at the FIRST World Championship in Detroit, Michigan! Building robots in only six weeks is difficult, demanding work, but that is what makes our mascot, Rosie the Riveter, so appropriate for our team. Rosie the Riveter is a symbol of female empowerment and a representation of the persistent fe-

male factory workers from WWII, and we wear our polka dotted bandanas and plaid shirts as a nod to her. Girls of Steel was born out of the need for more women in STEM fields. Unfortunately, the sharp decline in STEM interest among girls between childhood and adulthood plays a role in the lower number of women in STEM as adults, compared to the number of men. Undeterred by obstacles, Girls of Steel Robotics team is determined to reverse that decline. Or, as we like to call it—“Fix the leaky pipeline.” (frc.ri.cmu.edu/girlsofsteel/resources/pipeline) Outreach is our approach to the problem. Our robot demonstrations, presentations, camps, and workshops reach thousands and even attract new team members to our various FIRST programs! Over the past five years, we have hosted or attended over 275 outreach events and accumulated thousands of community service hours, all accomplished with the diligent work of high school girls. Girls of Steel Robotics has founded many FIRST programs since 2010. These SUMMER 2018

We are determined to inspire the next generation to become pioneers in STEM! We are the Girls of Steel, and we’re all about helping everyone realize that they can do it, too! n Anna Nesbitt is a 15-year-old freshman and the outreach lead, while Priya Ray is a 17-yearold junior and the electronics lead. MEMORABLE FOOD AND TRAVEL, FOCUSED ON THE EXPERIENCE

I

t all started with his love for travel and cooking. Growing up in western Pennsylvania, Jason Capps eagerly visited his grandparents in South Jersey every summer. Spending time at their restaurant was normal for him at a young age. “I remember being nine or ten, helping in the kitchen. I loved the energy and excitement, the knives, the flames, the smells. I knew I was going to be a chef with my own place someday.” His first official catering job came at 18 and was quite the production, especially for someone new to the business. “After culinary school I worked for the best chefs I could in New York City, Philly, and Charleston, SC. I eventually turned my attention back to my roots in Italian food. My mom is 100% and with Gramma Greco next door, it’s what we ate growing up.” As a father, Capps also wanted to build a legacy for his daughters. His beautiful

event villa, Bella Sera, is an award-winning venue for wedding receptions and corporate events, as well as charity and social affairs. With the construction of Bella Sera underway in 2005, Capps visited Italy to experience the architecture first hand. He loved the abundant arches, which he incorporated into the design, as well as the seasonal and local standards of sourcing food. True to Tuscan style, his latest enhancement is outdoors at the pond and features newly terraced green space for weddings, manicured gardens, waterfalls, and tented areas. Capps not only brings Tuscany to you, he also brings you to Tuscany. In 2014 he purchased two apartments inside the walls of Lucca and takes his daughters every summer to roam the country. “These journeys have been life-changing for us.” Today, his personally guided small group tours, called Ten Days in Tuscany, take place each May

and October. Capps’ trips are packed with unique experiences across rural Tuscany like truffle hunting, pasta making, wine and cheese tastings, and much more. Capps’s next project also involves his daughters, food, and of course, Italy. He’s in the final stages of planning Project Pesto, a documentary capturing their Italian experiences as a family. He plans to produce and pitch it to networks by winter. “I am so excited and grateful to finally do this with my girls.” The first episode honors his mom, who supplied the basil for Bella Sera’s famous pesto until her passing last May. n Bella Sera Catering, Venue, Bistro & BBQ 414 Morganza Road Canonsburg, PA 15317 Tuscany Tours: JasonCapps.com Pesto TV Pilot: ProjectPesto.com

Entrepreneurs Must Embrace Self-Care to

TRULY THRIVE by Ola Jackson

A

s entrepreneurs, many of us focus our time on growing our businesses. We prioritize and multi-task, balancing work life with family life, and our commitment to being a good friend while fulfilling community responsibilities. But too often, we fail to take our own well-being into consideration. We as women are not opting to make self-care a priority. We believe that self-care can be selfish if we ignore what we perceive as our obligations to help other people or focus on business growth. Just because we are moving doesn’t mean we are getting somewhere. The guilt-gene has consumed our bodies. Ladies, it is time to reclaim our lives. Stop letting the success of a business define you. Don’t wait for an emergency or a defining moment in your life to show you that your own self-care has been put on the back burner. Ignoring your well-being can be detrimental, long-lasting, and even life-threatening. The medical issues are not all that need our attention. What about a quiet walk in the park, turning off the television for a few hours, or removing yourself

from social media for a day so you can address your emotional well-being? I was that woman who put off mammograms, failed to make gynecology exams, missed spa appointments, and couldn’t remember when I had my last eye exam because I took on too much stuff that was unrelated to me getting closer to my own personal goals. Now, I have a routine that I think will work for you. I start each day by doing something for myself. It could be a quick 3-minute meditation, my morning prayer, or the usual workout. Your health is your real wealth, and if you are not healthy, you certainly will not be at your maximum potential to successfully operate your business. Here are some other things to try: 1. Learn the value of “NO.” 2. Own your time by allocating a time-out schedule. 3. Discipline yourself to focus on what really brings you joy. Being successful at enduring “busy-ness” is not the same as being successful at managing your business. Make it your business to include self-care as a part of your success factor. n

RETIREMENT PLANNING IS CHALLENGING… and Women Business Owners Need to go the Extra Mile by Melanie Colusci I just caught myself daydreaming about the day I retire. I’m not sure I have wrapped my arms around what that even means yet or how it will feel, but today it sure sounds nice. I imagine a perpetual feeling of being on vacation where I get manicures regularly, volunteer, and play with the grandkids. I know in this retirement dream I am living a life of leisure completely stress free. And just as quickly and easily as I was able to envision this retirement of my dreams, I’m jolted back to reality with the ding of my e-mail notification letting me know there

was some issue in my business I needed to take care of. As a wife, mother, and woman business owner I feel like I am constantly juggling the needs of my family and that of my business. There are times when it’s hard to consider the possibility of retiring let alone add another “to-do” item to my list labeled “plan for retirement.” It feels overwhelming, and who knows where to start? In addition, how do we overcome some of the challenges we were given simply by being born a woman? Here’s what I know…

SUMMER 2018

If you are age 65 today, life expectancy for men is age 84.3, and life expectancy for women is age 86.6.1 This means, statistically speaking, we have to cover our income needs for a longer period of time. Typically when it comes to taking time off to help care for children or raise a family, that responsibility often falls on the mother. In a Harvard Business Review survey conducted in 2005 of highly qualified professionals, they determined 43% of the women surveyed who have children did take time off compared to only 24% of men.2 Unfortunately that leads to either

BUSINESS

less saved toward retirement because we have less time to save it, or less income in retirement. Not only do I have to worry about saving more because I will live longer, I also have my business to consider. Who will take it over? What does a retirement transition plan look like? Is it sustainable without me? What happens to the clients? It’s important to not only plan for our individual retirement but also our business’s “retirement” from us. My business is my baby. I have nurtured, loved, and cared for my business for over 20 years. It’s hard to imagine a day when, just like my children, I have launched and handed over the keys to my business to someone else. My experience in working with other business owners is that it’s important to start creating your retirement plan both for you personally, as well as your business years in advance. I often use an analogy when meeting with clients that retiring is like climbing a mountain. A mountain climber wouldn’t create their plan to get down the mountain once they’ve reached the top. They would create their plan to get down the mountain before they even

36

InspiringLivesMagazine.com

started their journey. This is one of the challenges today. We are often so focused on working IN our business that we don’t typically set aside time to work ON our business until it’s almost too late. Don’t wait! Set aside time regularly with no interruptions so you can work on your business, which includes its retirement plan. Some of the considerations when creating your business retirement plan: • Have you identified someone who you believe shares similar values and work ethic that might be a good candidate to take over your business? • What transition period (how much time for the changeover) do you feel would create the highest probability for a successful transition? • If you have identified a successor, what sort of training/onboarding will they need? • Do you know the value of your business? If not, do you know a professional who can help with this? • How will the financial aspect (buyout) be structured? • How will you best communicate to customers/clients about the transition to help them feel confident?

SUMMER 2018

There are many aspects to making sure your business transition plan for retirement will be as successful as it can be. Take the time to think through how you envision your business’s retirement plan. Once you’ve created this vision, meet with a professional in this area to help you create and execute your plan. It’s important to first create a sound plan for you and your business to make that plan become a reality. Then you can focus on your other priorities both now and in retirement. I just hit send on my response to the e-mail that so rudely woke me from my brilliant retirement dream. I will take the opportunity now to look at my calendar and block out some time to start my business’s retirement plan. Who knows… maybe I will be off to that manicure before I know it! n 1. https://www.ssa.gov/planners/lifeexpectancy.html 2. https://hbr.org/2005/03/off-ramps-and-on-rampskeeping-talented-women-on-the-road-to-success Securities and investment advisory services offered through Hornor, Townsend, & Kent Inc., (HTK), Registered Investment Advisor, Member FINRA/ SIPC, 130 Springside Dr., Suite 100, Akron, Ohio 44333. QUANTUM SOURCE INSURANCE GROUP

CHARLES HARRIS…BEHIND THE Q

M

any of us face adversity, but not everyone has the tenacity to use those difficulties as inspiration to rise above and thrive. Charles Harris, owner and managing partner of Quantum Source Insurance Group, did just that. Charles was raised both by his father in Florida and Dallas, Texas, as well as his grandmother and aunt in the small steel mill town of Clairton, Pa., just south of Pittsburgh. Though Charles was an intellectual adolescent, he was also a stellar athlete, earning the nickname “T.D.,” short for “touchdown.” So he chose to live permanently with his father in Dallas because Texas is a mecca for high school football. There, “my father became my role model. I would watch him study at night, trying to advance his career, and he instilled in me that education came first. I wanted to be like him.” While playing high school football, Charles was scouted by some of the best college football programs in the country. But his senior year, he suffered a knee injury that sidelined him for the remainder of the season. Instead of giving up, his chose to attend a small college in Oklahoma for his freshmen year but quickly realized Oklahoma wasn’t the place for him. That’s when Charles decided to return home. “As much as I loved Dallas and spending time with my father, I always thought of Pittsburgh as home.” He transferred to Duquesne University in Pittsburgh and played football there, while earning his BA in marketing. It was tough, though. “I had a little help from my family, but mostly, I worked two or three jobs at once to pay for my education. I was determined.” Another injury during that time ended any hopes of a future in football. A few years later, Charles enrolled in the MBA program at Point Park University to help advance his career, and while

working a full time job, he studied and attended classes at night and on weekends. After finishing his degree, he held various executive roles with insurance corporations, each bringing new challenges, but enabling him to fully learn the business inside and out. “There is so much more to insurance than just products. You have to have a passion for it, for helping people.” Although he loved the business, he knew something was missing. Determined to make a real difference, Charles decided to form his own insurance agency. “I knew if I didn’t make a move, I was going to burn out in the business. I wanted to help people by forming QSIG. But I didn’t want it to just be another corner insurance agency. I had a bigger vision.” After forming Quantum Source, the adversity wasn’t over. “We needed capital to start the business, but all the lending sources I approached turned us down. At that point, I nearly gave up, but Lisa, my business partner and wife, encouraged and pushed me. That’s when I leveraged my own money to get started.” Then he had to get insurance carriers to buy into the concept and appoint the agency to do business. “That was the toughest part. Without an existing book of business, they wouldn’t talk to us.” Sheer will, determination, and hard work won out. “We decided to build it ourselves, working at our kitchen table—sometimes all night—to write insurance business. Finally, the business began to thrive. We haven’t looked back.” Charles Harris has finally found his place. “I feel like I am truly living the American Dream. To anyone out there facing adversity, don’t give up. I didn’t, and I’m finally who I wanted to be.”

Born in Vietnam in the late 1960s, Emily Letran grew up during the Vietnam War. She, her parents, and her three siblings lived in the city, so they weren’t as affected as those in the small villages, but when the Americans left in 1975, the communists took over. Letran was just 8 years old, and her mother died around the same time. “We went from a comfortable life to having very little,” Letran said. “If you seemed to have a lot, the government would come in and take your excess.” Then, in 1981, Vietnam started drafting young men for their war with China and Cambodia. “My aunt decided to leave Vietnam with her kids, and my older brother went with her so he wouldn’t be drafted. My dad encouraged me to leave, too, so I could help her take care of the family. I left, and I never saw my dad again.” The family left for Malaysia on a fishing boat. When they finally arrived at the refugee camp in Malaysia a week later—hungry because their supplies ran out after only 2 days—they built little sheds to live in and were given fresh food and water throughout their stay. They lived on that deserted island for 3.5 months. Finally, the family was able to move to the United States. A cousin had previously escaped to New Orleans, La., and they moved in with him. She started attending school at age 13. Six months later, speaking very little English, Letran moved to Riverside, Calif.

“My biggest challenge was the language,” Letran said. “I only learned some basic English at the refugee camp, so when I went to school, I didn’t know what the teacher was saying, especially for classes like history or science. So I stayed up late every night and translated everything so I would understand.” Letran also missed her home. “That’s something no one can help you with. Holidays were especially tough. We only had my aunt and my cousins, so gatherings were always small. We grew close and supported each other.” Even with these difficulties, Letran graduated from high school as the valedictorian of her class, and she pushed herself to finish her college education quickly, taking classes during high school, as well as summer classes at a junior college. “I knew I needed to help support the family. We all delivered newspapers, and I held a job during summer breaks. I was driven, so I finished undergrad in three years and went to dental school.” “I chose dentistry by process of elimination. Those were the days when doctors wore pagers, and I didn’t want to do that. I also wanted to have my own business.” After her residency in Loma Linda and three years of work that followed, Letran bought her first practice in September of 1997. She worked at multiple offices to pay off the loans for purchasing her practice. Though she was a skilled dentist, she always had to break through a barrier with a new patient. “When they would first see me, they always had questions about my background. ‘How long have you been doing this?’ and ‘Where did you get your education?’ I had to build trust with them. ere comes the sun, warmer weather, family vacations, and lots of summer fun! Alleviate the fear that summer fun will break the bank by planning now! Here are some key tips to creating a fun-filled summer for you and your family that will play in your financial favor. ESTABLISH A BUDGET Sit down as a couple and as a family. Decide what activities you want to plan for this summer together, and get the kids involved. Is a family vacation important? Will the kids attend summer camps, sporting events, or summer concerts? What about day trips or amusement parks? Remember these activities do not have to break your budget. With a little research online, you can find a wealth of information on free summer activities in the area or in your local community. Explore the offerings for free summer concerts in the park, local festivals, and church community carnivals. Think about outdoor activities that will not only be fun but will benefit your family’s health, such as walking in the park,

bike riding, and hiking trails. A ton of free kids camps are offered at the local library or community center. Shop local: think local farmers markets and farm shares or Community Supported Agriculture Organizations (CSAs). These organizations and events not only help support local farmers and businesses, but they also are cost effective, and your family will get healthy, locally grown ingredients. GET THE FAMILY INVOLVED & DONATE Search your house for unwanted, outgrown, or unused toys and clothing. They can be taken to consignment shops or donated to thrift stores or charities for a tax break. (Remember to obtain and save those receipts to claim the deductions.) This is a great way to get the whole family involved and get some healthy exercising in too! Another option is to host a yard or garage sale or get together with your neighbors to host a neighborhood or community sale. USE TRAVEL ONLINE TOOLS Online tools and websites such as priceline.com, travelocity.com, and ho-

tels.com are great resources for cost comparisons. Thinking about renting a house for the whole family rather than staying in a costly hotel? Websites such as Airbnb, Jetsetter, and Venere allow you to compare different options, locations, and price points. Also, when booking a hotel, think about locations that have kitchens to store breakfast, lunch, and snacks. Buying items in the local grocery store at your destination will save you from the costs of eating each meal out. Look for hotels that include free breakfast and snacks in the room rate. Here’s to relaxing, embracing the sun, and having a financially FIT summer! YOUR LIFE IS YOUR

SOUL ART Discovery with Artist Laüra Hollick by Cori Wamsley

A

n award-winning artist and creative spiritual entrepreneur, the founder of Soul Art Studio Inc., Laüra Hollick, sees art as a language and communion for her and the divine. She works with multiple mediums in her pursuit of reaching a higher level of consciousness, including painting, collage, costume, sculpture, photography, embodiment, ritual, dance, and most of all, herself. “I refer to my work as ‘soul art,’” Hollick said. “I love using so many mediums because they deepen my relationship with the spirit and the soul. We have such full lives, and what makes that meaningful, bearable, fun, and pleasurable is connecting with our higher selves. But we have to create to connect.” Hollick has always been creative, so she obtained a degree in fine arts after high school. But when she finished, she struggled so much on the business level. “I couldn’t figure out how I could make this my career. The first several years were really challenging. I had to create a way to connect with people so they could see and then buy.” For the past ten years, though, her business has exploded, allowing her to truly make a living as a creative. “I had to understand what it’s like to be an entrepreneur, which can be a challenge for creatives. At first, I just wanted to do art, but then I realized that was dishonoring to the art. The art wanted to make money and reach people.” When you don’t need to make money, you don’t worry about whether people can understand you. “No one was doing what I was doing at the time, so I didn’t have any guides. In other fields, there is a path, but creators have to find their way into the structures available or invent their own structures

for their business to work.” It’s important to learn from others and discover what’s out there, but your own intuition has to guide you. One of the ways that Hollick learned how to structure her business was to find out what millionaires and multi-millionaires were doing. Once she understood the structure, she made it her own. “What’s successful for one person won’t necessarily be successful for others. What you’re doing has to match your personality. When you’re starting out in a creative business, sometimes you have to imitate first and then decide how you want to do it based on what you actually like. Trying different things opens your own intuition to decide what is actually your way.” Part of Hollick’s mission is to let the term “starving artist” become extinct. “But artists can’t just expect the money to show up because they are great. Succeeding in the business requires mind, heart, cour-

age beyond the act of the creation.” Connecting with others has to be part of the art, and Hollick initially found that to be scary because she had always been shy. But when her heart told her to connect with people and focus on the art full-time, she knew she had to leave her comfort zone. “Art is interesting because it’s a new frequency. That’s what gets noticed. What’s inside has to create a bridge to the public so it doesn’t remain a hobby.” Hollick’s greatest hurdle—as well as her biggest pleasure—has been bridging her inner self with the outer world, connecting with people, and building a business with a structure for her ideas. “Connecting the elements was challenging. Now that I figured it all out, it feels like so much wants to happen at once.” Giving people an experience is Hollick’s structure. One of the unique ways she has helped people connect with her art is by hosting vision quests for people to get a

vision for the next level of their lives. Initially, she held local workshops, but today, she does them online. For Hollick’s Global Vision Quest, people gather at their computers, and she guides them through the vision quest via videos in her Facebook group. “Connection is an important part of the vision quest. You need it to amplify the vision.” Hollick sends a weekly newsletter to her email list to keep them informed about the vision quests and other events. She works on projects like the Nü Icon movie, the Yoni Art Festival, or International Soul Art Day (May 23), all of which draw attention to her art. This fall, Hollick is celebrating her 10-year anniversary working with Kevin Thom, her main photographer, with an exhibition. And she also develops quizzes for people coming to her website—to entice them to join her email list—such CONTINUED ON PAGE 104

MASTERING CIVILITY: A MANIFESTO FOR THE WORKPLACE, BY CHRISTINE PORATH

by Dr. Michele Lynn Langbein

C

ivility in the workplace is such an important topic! Atmospheres that lack civility are often toxic and result in low morale, less productivity, and a higher turn-over rate. Christine Porath’s book, Mastering Civility: A Manifesto for the Workplace, is a must read for any leader or anyone who aspires to be a leader. Because the book references much literature written about the topic, it is a great resource for anyone who does not have time to conduct the research. Porath split

DELLA, BRIANNE, AND LILA MITCHELL

her book into four sections. The first section discusses the problems that incivility can cause and the potential gains of civility. The second part encourages readers to reflect on how civil they are and suggests ways to improve. Next, Porath tackles how you can practice civility in your organization. And finally, the last section suggests ways to deal with incivility if you are the target. Mastering Civility: A Manifesto for the Workplace points out many of the behav-

iors that have become common practice but are actually impolite, such as answering a phone call in the middle of a meeting. The real world examples made me think about behaviors that could be considered uncivil such as looking at your phone or scanning the room while talking with someone. After reading the book, I did self-reflect and think about ways to apply what I read to the workplace. n

FILM REVIEW BLACK PANTHER

by Rev. Nettie Jorinda Bullitt

M

arvel’s Black Panther came to life on the big screen and immediately set records. In early April 2018, Black Panther replaced the blockbuster film Titanic as the third highest grossing film in the history of North American cinema. It then went on to become the first film to be screened in Saudi Arabia in more than 35 years. And Chadwick Boseman, King T’Challa/Black Panther, was recently named to Time magazine’s list of the 100 Most Influential People in the World. Writing for Time, Alex Fitzpatrick says that the “mega success of Black Panther signals a black renaissance,” which he calls “Afrofuturism.” “Works of Afrofuturism often portray a future in which black people use technology to become leaders of their own worlds.” Although Wakanda, the fictitious African country ruled by King T’Challa/

Black Panther exists in the hearts and minds of the peoples of the African diaspora, the various ruling clans in the film certainly represent actual vibrant African cultures. As the film premiered around the world, many audiences elegantly dressed in African clothing as an expression of and appreciation for “seeing themselves” on the screen as super heroes! “Wakanda forever!” is the rallying cry, a form of greeting and a sense of promise for those who recall, those who cannot forget, how all but one of the 54 African countries (Ethiopia) was not colonized and had their riches, people, and material stolen to enrich other cultures around the world. The wounds and scars of colonization of those 53 African countries are still raw in far too many ways. However, Black Panther, “Wakanda forever,” has become such a success, because we entertain the question, “What if?” What if Ethiopia

SUMMER 2018

was not the only African country not colonized? The opening scenes of Black Panther show the world around their country at war, in the world and with the world. The scene involves the ravages of the slave trade. Wakanda chose to cocoon herself. Cocooned for protection. Cocooned for prosperity. The growth and freedom that Wakanda experienced, albeit fictional in actuality, is genuine in spirit, and liberating to all who chose such response. Which reminds me of a quote by Viktor Frankl, psychiatrist and holocaust survivor, that I love: “Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response, lies our growth and our freedom.” Wakanda Forever. n

STONEWALL RESORT, WEST VIRGINIA ALMOST HEAVEN SUMMER ADVENTURE Hooray! It’s summer! And time for that much anticipated family vacation filled with timed fast passes, long lines in the hot sun, and $4 bottles of water and…Yikes! Can we rewind please and start again? Hooray! It’s summer! And time for that much anticipated family vacation filled with unscheduled downtime and quality family fun. Sounds better doesn’t it? You know, for years I planned big ticket “this will wow them” summer adventures for my family, only to realize through 20/20 hindsight, that it didn’t matter to my children where we vacationed, only that we were together as a family sharing quality time. I recently discovered a special place for quality family time at a “little piece of heaven” in the rolling hills of West Virginia called Stonewall Resort. The resort sits on the banks of the 26-mile Stonewall Jackson Lake authorized by the Flood Control Act of 1966 and constructed by the United States Army Corps of Engineers. It is easily accessible from Interstate 79 and is located on 1,900 acres of pristine West Virginia State Park in an area rich in history and Appalachian tradition. This “luxury” resort with a “down to earth” feel features beautiful views from its 186 rooms and 5 suites in a relaxing Adirondack style lodge. In addition to the lodge, there are 2-, 3-, and 4- bedroom lakeside cabins to rent and the onsite Briar Point Campground with electric hook up, full service bath house, boat launch, free WiFi, and picnic areas. On the summer weekend that I visited, the resort was filled to capacity with guests enjoying the wholesome experience that the resort and surrounding park provides. The lake is the focal point for fun with some of the best bass and muskie fishing in the state and pontoon and fishing boat rentals at the 374-slip marina. The resort’s Outfitter Pass provides unlimited rental sessions of kayaks, paddle boats and boards, aqua cycles, and road bikes to explore the lake for just $15 per

day. For the less adventurous sailors, from April to October, resort guests are treated to a free daily sightseeing cruise on “Little Sorrel,” the resort’s excursion boat. Land lovers in the family can hike, bike, and Segway 16+ miles of six beautifully developed trails that each feature a different adventure. For a more leisurely stroll, take a walk “over the lake” on a pedestrian boardwalk that spans 900 feet of water. The par 72, 18-hole award-winning Arnold Palmer Golf Course takes players from mountains to the water’s edge for a challenging and gorgeous round of golf. The Stonewall Lodge features three restaurants and a lakeside patio with firepits to make s’mores under the stars. The resort even provides the cutest “s’more kits” for kids of all ages with all the yummy ingredients wrapped in a colorful bandana. There is an indoor and outdoor pool, jacuzzi, fitness center, family center activity room, arcade, climbing wall, 9-hole disc golf course, 2 playgrounds, horseshoe pits, and basketball courts. Phew…so much to do…but do take time for relaxing, and visit the resort’s serene Mountain Laurel Spa that offers a full menu of pampering services, or just sit by the lake and enjoy the view. During my summer vacation at Stonewall, the resort provided an activity guide that included live music performances, a welcome reception in the Grand Hall lobby, craft time, organized family lawn games, a family movie in the resort cinema, a make your own ice cream sundae event, a cooking demo in the restaurant, and fireworks on the lake. Not that it’s necessary to leave the resort to find fun, but I did venture to nearby Weston, W.Va., and visited the cozy Lambert’s Winery for a tasting of locally made wine, the historic Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum for a super interesting tour, and The Museum of American Glass, featuring a colorful and extensive collection of American handmade glass from 1860 to the present. Wow, I didn’t need a fast pass. I never waited in a line. I felt relaxed and fulfilled, happily creating some wonderful memories. My summer adventure was truly almost heaven in West Virginia. n Almost Heaven…boating on Stonewall Jackson Lake

RESTAURANT REVIEW FOGO DE CHÃO•PITTSBURGH, PA

by Tonya Edinger • Photos by Fogo de Chão I was at a networking event when the stars aligned, and I met Tracey Shearer, the sales manager at the newly-opened Fogo de Chão (pronounced foe-go dee shown) in downtown Pittsburgh, Pa. We quickly hit it off, and she invited me to attend the grand opening celebration for the new steakhouse. Upon arrival, I was greeted with, “Bem vindo a Fogo de Chão (Welcome to Fogo de Chão)!” and authentic churrascaria (basically, barbeque). I couldn’t wait to get started. We had 12 in our party, arriving at different times, so while I waited, I hit Bar Fogo, which offers authentic libations straight from Brazil. The bartender suggested I begin with their signature drink (and also the national drink of Brazil), called the Caipirinha (kai-pee-reen-ya). Other drinks there include The Flor de Fresca, consisting of Hendricks Gin, ruby red grapefruit freshly muddled with elderflower, and a house-made honey elixir. Also on tap were some mocktails; they included Pineapple Mint Lemonade and a Brazilian Limonada. Once our entire group arrived, we were led to a luxurious curtained private dining area. Our server explained the experience in detail. He let us know about the wide variety of fire-roasted meats in succulent juicy details, which include selections of beef, lamb, chicken, and pork. On the wall of our private room was a beautiful display of countless wines that could be paired with our meal, but my eye caught the restaurant’s liquor cart that boasted an exquisite bottle of Remy Martin XO, which is one of my favorites!

Customer service is extraordinary at Fogo de Chão—they treat everyone like family. We were celebrating my 28th birthday (wink wink), and I truly felt like I was at home being pampered. Gauchos (chefs) butcher, cook, and serve each cut of meat while you control the experience by flipping a medallion back and forth from green to red. This allows the roaming chefs to know whether you’re enjoying what’s on your plate or when you’re ready for more. The chefs never rush you, and are happy to accommodate special requests. Here’s a pro-tip: ask for a “butcher” guide from your server to help you navigate the menu. Picanha (pih-kahn-ya) which is the prime part of the top sirloin is the most popular cut of steak both in the United States and Brazil. Another favorite is a Brazilian specialty called Fraldinha (fral-deen-ya) which is trimmed from the sirloin, and let me tell you, this tasty goodness is marbled throughout and has a texture that just melts in your mouth. While I’m a huge fan of the fire-roasted meats, the Market Table is a vegetarian’s dream! It includes an elaborate aged cheese and charcuterie display; a variety of seasonal salads, fruits, and veggies to please any palate; and my personal favorite, the caper-covered smoked salmon. Fun fact: nearly the entire menu at Fogo de Chão is gluten free! Needless to say, everyone in my party was impressed with the high level of service, attention to detail, and family atmosphere at Fogo, and I can’t wait to return very soon! Fogo de Chão currently has 52 locations worldwide, including Brazil (where they began nearly 40 years ago!), the United States, Mexico, and the Middle East. Maybe I’ll go to Dubai for my 29th birthday. n (412) 312-5001 525 Smithfield Street Pittsburgh, Pa. 15222 fogodechao.com

SCARS by Cori Wamsley | Photography by Robert Waters, Graffight Photography

Your face. It’s what others see first. Where people look when you talk. Your expressions. Your hair, makeup, and jewelry. Everything about you and what you’re thinking, how you feel, what you want others to perceive can be read on your face. That’s why scarring or disfigurement can be particularly devastating, especially for women. Between societal pressures and our own desires, we want to present our best facade, always. But women are strong. We rise above adversity. And with our own pain comes the power to lift others up. Our light shines through. Like Japanese pottery mended with gold—the art of kintsugi—women become even more beautiful with our flaws.

FACE.

YOU’RE MORE THAN YOUR

SCARS.

was diagnosed with cancer of the salivary gland in May 2012 and had part of my jaw, temporomandibular joint, nerves and muscle on the right side of my face, and external ear canal removed. The surgeon used part of my hip bone and nerves from my right lower leg to rebuild my face, but I required many more surgeries, as well as chemotherapy and radiation. I felt like a bomb blew up the life that I worked 47 years to orchestrate. I struggled for normalcy. Before my diagnosis, I was a nurse with a double masters in nursing and business, working on my doctorate while climbing the corporate ladder. Then suddenly, I was receiving care instead of giving care. I kept asking, “Why me?” I was angry about all I lost: hearing in my right ear, reduced sense of taste, trouble standing and walking. Then, when my doctor said he couldn’t reconstruct my jaw because of the radiation I had, I told him I wanted to join a support group. But there was nothing in the U.S. So he suggested that we start a group together. I was excited. I was used to being busy—I did public speaking, clinical client consultations, spoke with CEOs, and more. Starting Face2Face Healing changed my own recovery. Personally, as I recovered, I tried to balance work and life with my son. I had to go on disability, but I got to spend more time with him. I just tried to live each day to its fullest. Life is so short, so relationships are important, as well as giving back and doing daily acts of kindness. After my surgery, I was stared at and avoided and even saw people point at me like I was a monster. It was difficult because my son was a witness. I talked to him about doing things out of kindness

and connecting in small ways. I want people to know that you’re more than your face; you’re more than your scars. Now, I don’t sweat the small stuff. Today, Face2Face Healing helps those who have facial scarring from burns, facial palsy, accidents, congenital anomalies or various other causes, and there is always something in their stories that resonates with me. It’s amazing how having that bond with someone helps the healing process. I always wanted to make an impact as a nurse and Christian, and now I’m really doing it. Whether I am speaking to an individual with disfigurement or health care providers who want guidance, my story feels like a story, but it creates an emotional response. I don’t feel like I’m doing anything that special or out of the ordinary. It’s just what God has called me to do. I want people with facial and bodily disfigurement to understand that they don’t have to hide. They can be recognized for who they are. n

didn’t know that acid attacks were so prevalent in Uganda, where I used to live, because victims usually hide. They are afraid of being condemned. Helping these women is my calling. I was attacked after I finally left my husband. I had been physically and mentally abused by my ex-husband for 7 years. He controlled what I wore, who I saw, or who I made friends with. Even with my master’s degree he kept me as a housewife. In Ugandan culture, the family must keep their daughter in her marriage, so my family made me go back whenever I tried to leave. My father finally said that I had nowhere to go if I left my husband, so I got a job so I wouldn’t have to go to my family for help. That’s when I took my daughters, age 5 and 1 and a half, and moved into our own apartment. When my husband said he wanted to see our daughters, I was afraid he would hold them captive. But he pressured me,

so I finally let him have them for a couple days. When he called me to his house to pick them up, a man there threw chemicals on my face. My girls started screaming. The neighbors came out to help, but they didn’t know what to do. I ended up losing my nose and sight in my right eye and eventually my entire facial identity. Once this happened, I finally won my freedom. No one made me go back after that. My experience helped me appreciate who I am beyond my physical appearance. Now I focus on inner strength and beauty. I discovered I had other assets, like a voice and a story that can empower and break the silence. In the United States, I give talks about abuse and empowerment. I talk to girls about exercising their rights, and I help boys understand how to treat women. Today, these stories are all over the media, and we don’t have to hide. Every abused woman is now unveiling their scars.

To help them, I started a non-profit, the Center for Rehabilitation of Survivors of Acid Violence (CERESAV). We promote human services for acid attack survivors in Uganda to help prevent them from dying in the hospital due to infections, extreme burns, or lack of support. We also advocate to prevent future attacks. To help protect victims, I spearheaded legislation in Uganda. In 2016, the president, passed a toxic chemical bill into law, which would help restrict access to concentrated sulfuric acid. n

hen I was 15, I was involved in a hit and run accident. My mom was driving me to a school picnic, and when the other driver hit us, he was speeding. After the initial impact, we hit a brick wall. The dashboard and the windshield all crashed around the passenger side, and the car was totaled. My lip was completely shredded, and I couldn’t feel it. I ended up with 241 stitches in my upper left lip, some by my eye, and some on my forehead. I was awake for the whole 6-hour surgery because I had to move my mouth around so the doctors could somehow form a lip again. It was terrifying. Just before the accident, I had started modeling, so that had to end. I became even more self-conscious than most teenagers. I didn’t go to school for months, and I had to quit dancing, which I loved. I wore a scarf around my face all day long, especially when we had visitors. After a few months I had to start getting collagen shots in my lip so they could continue doing surgeries. The shots were horribly painful. I’ve had a couple different surgeries to form the lip better and decrease the scar tissue that formed a huge bump from my

lip to my nose. I now have all the feeling back in my lip, which is a blessing. I also recently went to Cosmetic Solutions (mycosmeticsolutions.com) in Pittsburgh, Pa., and the owner, Rachel Schinosi, gave me a lip liner tattoo to define my lip. Before, it was flesh-colored. Now, I have a line, and when I look in the mirror, even when I first wake up, I feel more confident. The support of friends and family, especially my parents and grandparents, has been crucial, and I’m so blessed to have had that during such a horrific time. Today, I am a wife, mother, owner of a small business, and senior advertising executive for Inspiring Lives Magazine. It was a dream of mine to have this article written about the women who have overcome their injuries and how they have empowered others. Through the years, I have talked to many women with facial deformities who lacked confidence, and we have been able to uplift and support each other. This, along with modeling again, have helped rebuild my confidence. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that it matters more who you are on the inside than how you look on the outside. If you have confidence and treat others kindly, they don’t even notice your imperfections. n

by Karen L. Scuilli What do you see when you look at me? Do you see the pain I have endured or Do you just see my disability? What do you see when you look at me? Do you see my heart, my faith, or inner beauty or Do you stare or pretend to be kind and walk past me? What do you see when you look at me? Do you see who I have become or Who I used to be? What do you see when you look at me? Do you see my eyes full of hope and love or Do you see my facial deformity? What do you see when you look at me? I am much more than my face Just take the time and you will see. What do you see when you look at me? I often wished and prayed that I could be normal But now I realize this is the new me. What do you see when you look at me? I am stronger now, and your words or looks don’t matter Because I know that my family, friends, and God love me unconditionally.

WHAT DO YOU SEE WHEN YOU LOOK AT ME?

FACE2FACE HEALING “People come to us in different phases of their recovery, and we offer them support,” Karen Scuilli, founder and owner of Face2Face Healing, said. Frequently, people are left emotionally and/or physically unable to adapt to their new situation following a disfigurement. Birth defects, cancer, burns, facial palsy and other neurological issues, injuries, and trauma can lead someone to confront facial and bodily differences. They may feel lonely, confused, or rejected, along with dealing with a physical change to their bodies and possibly having changes to their daily lives. Face2Face Healing was created in response to the gap between finishing medical treatment and resuming life on your terms. Its goal is to “empower the individual with disfigurement to see their inner beauty and give them back their voice.” Part of that empowerment is found in connection. Face2Face Healing creates a support network, offering those with disfigurement opportunities to meet and share their stories. Scuilli tries to personally visit new members to speak with them and their caregivers, but if they are not located in the Pittsburgh, Pa., region or surrounding area, she at least calls them. “Talking to them one-on-one makes a bigger impact,” she said, “because I’m living it, too.” The service is available to people nationally and internationally through an interactive website. Face2Face Healing offers programs, videos, and live PHI-protected video conference calls with support groups to help people heal. Even those who are not ready for others to see them can participate with the video turned off. Stories from others with disfigurement are featured on the website to help those who are new to the program. Scuilli used to be a case manager, so one of her focuses for the program is resources. She can help patients find doctors or financial assistance, as well as educational presentations locally and nationally. Many who experience the transition to life with disfigurement have financial constraints, so Face2Face Healing has resources to help with costs. Because dental care is really important, especially for cancer patients, Face2Face Healing offers Mission of Mercy Pittsburgh Free Dental Care to provide free dental care for those CONTINUED ON PAGE 104

BATTLING BREAST CANCER IN THE PUBLIC EYE: SUPPORT, STRENGTH, AND LOVE by Cori Wamsley

Not much can impact your life as quickly and drastically as a cancer diagnosis. Pittsburgh, Pa., news anchor Kelly Frey with WTAE was just 43 when she found out she had breast cancer and knew she had to hit the ground running. “I didn’t have time to curl up in a ball and cry,” Frey said. “I wanted to immediately tackle this.” She thought of her son, whose medical conditions make him completely dependent on his parents. “That helped me focus on what I needed to do. I will never stop fighting so I can fight for him.” Her diagnosis in February 2017 came soon after she felt a lump under her right bra strap, which she knew wasn’t there even a month before, let alone when she had her mammogram in August. “That made me realize not only how important a yearly mammogram is, but also the self-exams in between. With such an aggressive cancer, waiting to find out about it could have been too late to treat it.” She soon discovered that her type of cancer would require chemo, surgery, and radiation. “I also saw a breast surgeon, Dr. Ronald Johnson, the week after my cancer was confirmed. I had to see him alone because my husband was taking my daughter to see her doctor because she was sick. That’s when my diagnosis really hit me—my knees were weak, and I was cold.” “Once I was told that I needed chemo, I knew I had to go public. I had nothing to be embarrassed or ashamed about. I just had to put it out there so people knew what was going on.” Frey had no idea how she would handle losing her hair, an aspect that can make the journey even more difficult. “My faith in the Lord got me through, though. I prayed for stamina and energy for my family and kids. I was thankful that I only had to take three days off of work for chemo and two for surgery.” She laughed. “Work wasn’t always pretty, but I made it through.” But having cancer has been a journey for Frey. Her motto has quickly become, "Assume nothing." Even though she completed the original 24 weeks of prescribed chemo last August, because of the major revelation that her tumor wasn't shrinking after the first 9 weeks of initial treatment, her on-

cologist decided to adjust her game plan and add on two more chemo drugs: Herceptin and Perjeta. These chemo drugs are typically given for a year. Now, she has completed her chemo treatment and had her port surgically removed. "I know that my cancer could come back. That’s always in the back of my mind. I’m just hoping for a calm summer.” Getting through the tough chemotherapy, surgery, radiation, and mental game that comes with cancer takes a lot of inner strength. Frey said she was also lucky enough to have incredible support from her husband, parents, and friends, as well as “thousands of people I didn’t even know. Everyone should have that kind of support when they go through this. I was humbled.” “When I would get my chemo, everyone there was just like me, but some had a far worse diagnosis. Seeing all these men, women, and children with the will to live and survive and even thrive while dealing with their cancer was so inspiring to me. The treatments ravage your body, and just being around these people buoyed me. n

Beautiful

DISASTER by Donna Miller

A

few days in everyone’s life stand the test of time and will always be remembered. A few of my personal ones are the days my boys were born, the day I got married, and the day my husband died. Yes, I’ve been a widow since I was 32. On August 25th, 2016, I received the call that would rock my whole world. In an instant, the whole future I had prepared myself and my kids for had changed dramatically. Family and close friends didn’t know what to expect from me, and I didn’t know either. He had been the final piece to the puzzle I had worked on all my life. Not that I need a man to complete me, but having a husband made me feel whole. Ben was the calm to my anxiety, the goofy to my seriousness, a listening ear to my endless rants, patience and understanding to my impulsive judgements, the tissue to my tears, and so much more. I was crazy about him and so were my boys. I never thought I’d find someone who fit so perfect for all of us… but I did. May of 2016, we got married after dating 5 years. We had known each other since we were teenagers, and I always had a crush on him, not knowing he had felt the same. Ben had taken his time earning the boys respect and love and when he did, it was so beautiful to watch the interactions they would have. Their faces would light up, and at times, I felt like the third wheel. He could motivate and build my oldest son’s confidence in a way I had never seen before. My little guy thought he was the

funniest person alive. I thought he was perfect: a perfect fit for us. Our wedding was perfect, too. Our first dance together is still burned into my memory as one of my favorite moments in life. He just kept pulling me closer with that big smile that revealed his dimples and those green eyes that could melt anyone’s heart. During the summer of 2016, we made plans as many couples do. We took the kids camping, which they loved—another one of my favorite times to reflect on. I watched Ben teach my oldest how to canoe and fish while my little one played on the beach. We were looking at homes to purchase and doing things to build our credit. I had asked him about a mini honeymoon for our 1-year anniversary. We were really looking forward to our future together. August of 2016, though, all of that came to a screeching halt. I can’t say I remember the call, but I do remember falling to my knees screaming, sobbing and in disbelief. It was about 8am when the phone rang. I had just sent my oldest to school for the day, and my youngest was still hopping around the apartment with his morning Pop Tart. Immediate family and close friends all packed in their cars and headed over as soon as they heard. I decided to wait until the end of the school day to tell my oldest. I wanted him to have one last good day before his world changed like mine. Breaking the news to him was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. I felt like I held his heart in my hand and crushed it. The next few days are hazy. The funeral even seems like just a blur of people.

SUMMER 2018

Anyone who’s ever lost someone close can tell you that after the funeral is when it really punches you in the gut. I couldn’t sleep, couldn’t eat, couldn’t think. I would start a task around the apartment and get frozen in a memory of him, of when we laughed together. It was bad. Never have I had a loss this traumatic and unexpected. It really knocked the wind out of me. I was unable to take care of myself. I suddenly had this blank slate. What once seemed like a well-outlined life of love and laughter had become an empty page that I didn’t ask for. I spent about 6 to 8 months completely immersed in all the stages of grief simultaneously when I noticed our list of goals on the fridge. In that moment, I decided that I still had stuff to do. We still had goals to reach, and even though he wasn’t here with me to do them, he was still in my heart. We had come up with those goals together, and they still needed to be done. In May of 2017 (just a few days before our 1-year anniversary), I managed to buy a home and complete the list (all besides quitting smoking). Throughout that process was when I realized I’m still alive. I still have the opportunity to do those things and be with these people who I love. And yes, it hurts my heart to realize I can’t see his smile, but I can still feel his love. I carry it with my every day. I am still here. I still have time, and I now have this fight in me to make the most of it. I know now how valuable time is, and I’m looking forward to making more memories that I can feel in my heart, regardless of the storm around me. n

Reboot with Health and Wellness Retreats by Alice Beckett-Rumberger

W

hen we conceptualize work/ life balance, most of us imagine an ideal scenario where we finally have our acts fully together. Where everything is in perfect balance. We’re killing it at work. Our home-life is happy. We’re jamming at the gym. And our social life is smooth as silk. Sounds like a bit of heaven to step out of your everyday life and go on a health and wellness retreat! That’s exactly why wellness tourism is a growing industry. The idea of going on a wellness and pampering retreat used to be considered something that only the very wealthy could afford, but as our focus on health and wellness grows, so does the affordability of this self-care vacation. Why are retreats a good idea? What should you look for in a retreat? For these answers, I set out on a mission to learn more and share with our Inspiring Lives readers! The body and mind connection to health has been well-established. Evidence-based research also supports the

idea that retreats can have a longer-term benefit to your health. Taking the opportunity to focus on your well-being may be the number one reason to schedule that wellness retreat. A retreat, whether 2 days or 2 months—wishful thinking— is a time to reboot. A time to get away from the daily grind, the social overload, digital overload, or the double and triple booked schedule. A retreat is that chance to revitalize to become a part of the #bepresent movement. A time to reconnect with yourself. As many reasons to say “yes” to a retreat exist as do different types of retreats. From the super exotic islands to the urban oasis, most retreats have some core common elements. A retreat offers amazing healthy eating options and a beautiful backdrop that helps your senses unwind. Many retreats offer a variety of activities from horseback riding to yoga and meditation classes. Choosing the one for you depends on your budget, what activities you are interested in, whether

SUMMER 2018

you want a structured or relaxed schedule, and how much time are you able to go away. For me, a retreat would be in a warm, beautiful place with activities like hiking and a yoga class. I love trying new foods as well. Since I can only get away for about 5 days, I couldn’t head to far off lands. A one stop plane destination is ideal. While I plan my next dream retreat, I can also savor those moments in between with a scheduled massage and healthy lunch with no electronics! The most important part of taking that much needed retreat for either a weekend or a week is to keep those healthy lifestyle habits going when you get home! So, find a friend, or be brave and go it alone. The perfect retreat to reconnect, be present, and reap the self-care benefits is only a scheduled appointment with yourself away. What’s an ideal retreat for you? Post on social media with #InspiringLivesRetreat to let us know! n

any people struggle with controlling their stress and managing their emotions. Connecting people with the knowledge around them and helping them discover their potential is Kiria Cora’s mission. Through her conferences, workshops, and private consulting strategies and techniques, Cora, CEO of Insight Me Consulting, LLC, helps individuals and organizations reduce stress to improve performance, health, well-being, and decision-making ability. “Leaders need emotional intelligence skills to get people to follow them and create a healthy organizational culture.” Creating more coherent work cultures and building and maintaining resilience are major ways for a company to reach the next level. “Organizations and communities become healthier and are in a better position to face the growing challenges of today with greater composure and intelligence. Employees must have technical skills, of course, but interpersonal skills make a huge difference.” Companies need employees who can work with others, build healthy relationships with their team members, and direct themselves. When you can increase your awareness of the world around you, you can start living in freedom. When you increase mastery of emotional intelligence, you make optimal decisions. That’s the key to a successful relationship with yourself and others.”

Cora helps empower people to better control their emotions, which leads to long-lasting relationships both in the office and at home. “By recognizing our patterns, we can reach a higher level of awareness in the use of our emotions, which can help us achieve better results in our life. family business that Jessica Graves started in her kitchen when her kids were small has blossomed into Una Biologicals, which produces affordable, natural beauty and wellness products. “I had trouble finding products that worked for my sensitive skin and were in the price range for a young family,” Graves said. “I also wanted something clean and organic, which was tough to find in the ‘90s.” Her experience working with plants and organic farming, as well as her background in chemistry and as an herbalist, made the answer natural.

VISIONS OF THE FUTURE ARE RIGHT IN YOUR HOME

METAL

by Yvonne Phillips FSII EARTH Feng shui enhances your awareness of balance and harmony in your home or office and helps you start your day with a sense of strength and courage. A simple feng shui strategy session can lead to solutions that will resolve a conflict spatially and create a sense of balance, harmony, and well-being by shifting the items within a space or adding a few elements. Everyone can benefit from feng shui, but it is most important to those suffering from sickness or illness. I love seeing others learn and grow as I coach them through their lives every day. Their confidence and smiles tell me I have achieved my goal of “Feng Shui for Basic Everyday Living.” This approach translates to every aspect of a person’s or family’s life: health and body, spirit and mind, and relationships and career. To help even more people through feng shui, I’m working on a book, Little Red Book of Feng Shui ABC’s, to be released in the winter of 2019. Simple changes within an environment at home or work can produce enormous results. Here are some ways you can enhance your own space: • People associate feng shui with visuals and flow, subtle sound within your space also benefits everyone. For breakfast with your family, try adding soft, uplifting music to create a sense of love and togetherness while setting a tone

for your day. Just like color, sound is a frequency, a specific vibration that can immediately uplift and set your mood. • You can shift energy by using fragrance, such as a lovely bowl of oranges or diffused lemon or orange oil for a pickme-up during the day. When you eat an orange, smell it first! It enlivens the senses. • What do you see when you sit down for your lunch or evening meal? Hopefully, not a computer screen! For a simple escape, buy a lovely tablecloth or placemats. Use a crystal goblet for your fruited water. Reach for a serving of peace and harmony with your food. • Tea has a refreshing smell and taste and can revive a memory of time or space. Chrysanthemum tea takes me back to a lovely afternoon tea in Hong Kong. • Include soft throws and pillows in your living space to help transition you to sleep time and help you let go of stress. That’s feng shui for the space within! For information about how we can enhance your space, please visit fengshui-world.com or email yvonne@fengshui-world.com. Yvonne Phillips’s certifications and trainings include Feng Shui Institute International, Lillian Too Feng Shui, Red Lotus Master Course in Feng Shui, and Marie Kondo's "Tidy Your Home" training. n

Though Graves started out making the products for personal use, family and friends sharing the products quickly led to a growing business. Una Biologicals is now carried in 50+ stores across the United States, with their full line available in their Lawrenceville, Pa., boutique.

“Keeping the products as clean as possible is part of our mission. I’m making food for your skin. What you put on your

body has to be as healthy as what you put in your body.” Because your skin absorbs 60% of what you put on it, Graves creates an alternative to what you find in a drug store that smells and feels just as good. Una Biologicals is proving that organic can also be mainstream accessible. Una Biologicals offers over 90 different products, including a full line of face and body care products, as well as natural wellness products, including Headache Relief and Muscle Rub, each for under $30. “Many of our customers have sensitivities or are cancer survivors, but our products are perfect for the average person, too. No one wants products that irritate or dry out their skin. Our products don’t have paraben, sulfate, phthalates, and other chemicals that are hard on your skin. And we don’t use alcohols or perfumes. They are lightly scented with essential oils.”

WHAT IF THE NEXT EMAIL YOU SEND COULD CHANGE YOUR LIFE? by Nancy Mramor Kajuth, Ph.D.

W

hat would it mean to you to be happier? What if it took just 1–3 minutes a day at no charge to you or anyone else AND it could make someone else happier, too? If you could, would you want to start the day off in a way that creates a state of gratitude, a high level state of energy that brings you more of what makes you grateful? And would you be willing to send one email of appreciation to someone today to kick off their happiness? Research shows that giving gratitude makes you happier, healthier, and psychologically stronger; increases self-esteem, empathy, and abundance; reduces aggression; and opens the door wider in your relationships. When you start the

day with one email of gratitude and appreciation, you change the way you look at the world, reframing it more positively and letting yourself see opportunities for gratitude in every moment, your health, abundance, happiness, and your future. Before long, waking up every day ready to be in a state of happiness and appreciation, ready to find someone or something to appreciate, will become a positive habit that uplifts your whole life. And all you have to do is send one email, text message, phone call, greeting card, or photo of appreciation to someone who makes a difference in your life. Include some words of appreciation, and watch what happens! You will start noticing people and things to appreciate, shifting your awareness toward all the

good things in your life. And you can invite more people to your circle who will commit to one email a day, expanding everyone’s happiness exponentially. What do you need to start? 1. Begin today and every day with one email, text, call, photo, card, gift, or form of appreciation. 2. Follow Real Conscious Living on Facebook so we can continue to send you tips on the One Email gratitude initiative. THE TOO BUSY BODY by Victor R. Prisk, M.D.

D

id you know that sitting is the new smoking? According to research, living a sedentary lifestyle is just as injurious to our health as smoking. Add the stress of managing a business, organizing a household, or both, and you’re putting your health in harm’s way. It is so easy to say that we are too busy to treat our bodies to the healthy foods and exercise it needs. The world around us makes it too easy to consume processed foods with empty calories, scarce in nutrients. It’s also too easy to find excuses for avoiding the gym with appointments, meetings, and chauffeuring kids. Everyone has a busy schedule. We all have different priorities in life. Is being healthy a priority for you? Here are five ways to become busier for your body. 1) WRITE IT DOWN: Have you ever written down your personal priorities? Sure, you have goals for accomplishing work tasks and ways to make money, but have you set priorities for your health? Even if you have thought about it, thoughts are ethereal and can vanish. Writing down your priorities solidifies them, so start with your health priorities. For instance, to beat a family history of

heart disease, you must make time to organize a healthy diet and exercise routine. 2) BREAK IT DOWN: Studies show that daily exercise reduces our risk for cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and cancer. It is a common misconception that one must dedicate a full hour or even a half hour to exercising for it to be effective. Short bursts of intense exercise of 10–15 minutes can be just as effective as mild to moderate exercise of 30–60 minutes. One example is high-intensity interval training (HIIT). This can be 30 seconds of slow walking/cycling/elliptical alternating with 10–30 seconds of all out sprints. 3) WAKE IT UP: It is true that the early bird gets the worm. By waking up early and getting our day started with exercise, we become more organized in our thoughts while boosting our metabolism. Exercising after the fast of sleeping is a great way to mobilize fat stores, revving up our metabolism for the rest of the day. In combination with a relative carbohydrate fast up to lunch (i.e. eating leafy veggies and protein without carbs), the exercise induced fat burning machinery remains engaged.

4) PACK IT UP: To eat healthy we must prepare our meals from healthy ingredients. Shopping the periphery of the grocery store can help us avoid the overly processed foods in the middle. Eating whole fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, lean meats, dairy, and fish that we cook ourselves is the healthiest way to eat. If cooking isn’t your thing, many local chefs will do this for you. Invest in some storage containers and join the food prep movement. 5) GIVE IT A BOOST: It is hard to get all the nutrients we need from foods alone. Nutritional supplements like a multivitamin, proteins, or probiotics can help us stay on track. Protein helps control appetite and maintain muscle for metabolic currency. Some supplements like fish oil or fiber supplements can help boost our cardiovascular health. Other supplements focus on boosting our energy, metabolism, and mental clarity. Find the supplements that match the health priorities that you wrote down. n Dr. Prisk is the author of The Leucine Factor Diet and The G.A.I.N. YOUR PERSONAL SAFETY IS IN YOUR HANDS

J

ody Salerno wants women to avoid becoming victims by preparing them with lethal and non-lethal personal protection skills. She bought her first gun 4 years ago after her divorce. She had been married for 27 years and found herself alone—and vulnerable—for the first time. Though she took a class so she would feel comfortable with basic gun use, she still wasn’t ready to carry it. So she took another class, this time, in tactical gun use, where she learned to shoot around barrels and other obstacles. She was hooked. When she began shooting competitively, other women approached Jody and asked if she would teach them to shoot as well. Following her NRA certification to teach shooting, Salerno began her company, Personal Safety Alliance. “Everyone who owns a gun needs to practice to keep their skills up,” Salerno explained. “Learning how to safely use a gun and knowing when to shoot are essential life-saving skills. Practicing techniques helps you remain calm and be more accurate in an emergency situation.” That gun cannot save your life or the lives of loved ones without the knowledge and training on how to use it. Salerno herself is constantly seeking training and certifications, even with her advanced skill level. “I love training because it helps me be a better teacher.”

Personal Safety Alliance offers firearms training, specializing in training new women shooters. Salerno aims to help beginners through different skill levels so they will feel comfortable with concealed carry. “I also hold situational awareness seminars and workshops customized for people’s needs,” she added, “like realtors, in-home care-givers, or college students. Different groups need to learn skills for getting out of situations specific to their occupation or stage of life.” Though Salerno believes that a gun is the most reliable way to protect yourself, in her workshops, she talks to these groups about situational awareness, how predators choose their victims, and how to get away from an attacker, such as how to get out of wrist or choke holds. She also covers non-lethal ways that you can protect yourself. “The number of people becoming victims of violent crime is staggering. This is why learning self-defense and gun handling skills is so important. Even learning how to effectively use pepper spray can save your life.” Along with her workshops and trainings, Salerno also sells personal protection products through First Watch Personal Protection, a subsidiary of Personal Safety Alliance. ATTORNEY JESSICA QUINN-HORGAN, Founder and Attorney at Law, Law Offices of Jessica Quinn-Horgan

The legal field is still a largely male-dominated field, so as a woman, I enjoy being a mentor and a role model to new female attorneys and to my three children, especially my two young daughters. They see that women can be strong, stand up, take charge, and be a leader. My biggest challenge is not taking everything to heart. It’s sometimes difficult to stay detached from my cases. My husband says that I treat everyone’s fight as my own, which makes me a good advocate but can also be emotionally draining. I’m passionate about giving people a voice. It’s demanding, but I love advocating on behalf of people so their voices and positions can be heard. Whether in court during litigation or simply advising someone on how to get what they want, I take pride in solving problems and helping people achieve their best possible outcome. For women climbing the ladder of success, do not to settle. I used to work in large law firms but found it nearly impossible to have the career I wanted and be the wife and mother I wanted to be in the confines of that environment. Eleven years ago I took a chance and went out on my own to start a practice, and I am so glad I did. While I work long hours, I work on my own terms and have the flexibility to have a good balance between my career and family. ERIN ISSAC, DMD,

MICHELLE BUGG,

The best part about my job is doing what is best for my patients, not doing it a certain way because someone else does it that way or says it has to be done their way. I love creating an environment that’s unique and different. It keeps everyone coming back and telling their friends and family about the positive experience! The biggest challenge is getting people to understand the importance of kids’ oral health and how that can affect overall health. I’m passionate about spreading the importance of children’s oral health and taking care of all teeth (including baby teeth). I’m also passionate about empowering girls and women to be whatever they want to be! For other women climbing the ladder of success, get as much advice as you can, do as much research as you can, but take it all with a grain of salt. No one is you, and you don’t want to do every single thing the same as someone else. Be unique. Always stay true to you, and don’t compare your success to what everyone appears to be achieving or reaching on the outside. We never know the struggles others are going through or have gone through to get to where they are. We also have to make our own definitions of success and know that it’ll take time to get there. Success isn’t all about money; it’s about building something that you love, are proud of, and can leave a lasting positive mark.

My favorite thing about my job is the people. I love working with my husband and my brother, as well as our chefs, employees, and customers, who have become like family. We opened our doors shortly after I became a new mom, which was a huge challenge for me. I had to learn how to navigate a lot of new territory at once, and how to establish a healthy balance in my life. I am passionate about food! I love eating delicious food, trying different things and dining out with friends. I’ve always wanted to create a place where people could enjoy doing just that. It’s incredibly rewarding to hear about the memorable experiences customers have had at our restaurant. I want other women who are building their careers to remember to be courageous. Step out of your comfort zone and don’t be afraid to take risks, even if you are not sure you’re completely ready. Surround yourself with good people—people who inspire you, people you can learn from, and people who believe in you.

TIFFANY FLUHME,

President/CEO Fluhme Beauty One of the things I love most about the business is the ability to give young women amazing opportunities with our company. As long as they have the passion and drive, I will continue to work to give them the tools they need to experience success beyond what they could have ever imagined. Honestly, the biggest challenge in my position is learning to manage so many people. Most days I feel like my job is to keep 25 people happy and positive, and sometimes this is quite a challenge. I try to keep a positive attitude regardless of the situation and encourage our team to do the same. I am most passionate about my family—my husband and two boys. Needless to say, I am passionate about my business and the beauty industry as a whole, too. The best advice I would give women climbing the ladder of success is to first and foremost be sure you LOVE what you do. If you do not, you need to search for your career soulmate. Those who love what they do and dive into their work 150% will experience the most success. Also, if you love what you do, never ever give up. You will certainly face multiple challenges and roadblocks, but I promise you that, if you keep pushing, it will all pay off. LYDIA ELLE Vocal Icons ReImagined by Cori Wamsley

n Jess Branas’s music review from Inspiring Lives Magazine’s Winter 2017 issue, she first introduced us to the powerful voice of Lydia Elle. “Lydia has an impeccable gift that makes you addicted to love, power, and hope. And in this world, it’s a voice and word we all need to hear.” Those attending The Global Sisterhood 501 (c)(3) charity’s Global Gala fundraiser in April of this year were awed by Elle’s voice, which filled the room with passion and pain as she belted out Aretha Franklin’s “Ain’t No Way.” Her story is like many women’s: she put her dreams on hold, working a dependable job while raising her young daughter as a single mother. A move across the country, a best-selling book, and a new start as a mindset and business consultant were the bridge to the next verse in her life. This is where the dream comes in. Elle created speaking engagements that could incorporate her singing with her speaking. She also does backup vocals for Alessia Cara and others. “In LA, you do whatever it takes till you find your place.” About a year ago, she met Jovan Dawkins, multi-Grammy and

Billboard award-winning producer and CEO of Heritage Music Group, who has signed on as the producer for Elle’s upcoming project. “I plan to write songs that touch authenticity, failure, self-esteem, doubt—all the things we constantly grapple with in the human experience—and record my first EP. Enough people tell you that they made it through, and you can too. I’m speaking from the middle of it.” “I want to provide a healing experience for those who are hurting, as well as myself. I want to be with them in their moments of pain. Every time I sing, I heal a little part of myself. If I could cry every time I sing, I would. So often we try to hide our pain, but there is freedom in revealing your scars.” Failure is a huge part of success. Through her music, Elle wants to inspire so those who experience similar emotions know they are not alone in their struggles. Developing something to show an artist’s musical identity is so important. “As a singer or artist, we all have our unique influences that come out in our music CONTINUED ON PAGE 105

LEVELING UP with Gino and Emilio of Izzazu Salons

IN THE ZONE

W

hen we think about being happier each day, we can’t help but think about how both men and women look and feel about their hairstyle. Let’s face it…we wear our hair every day. Our hairstyle, makeup, clothing, and accessories greatly influence how we feel or deal with our daily lives’ balancing acts. We want to share with you the best way to recreate your salon look at home. Where did my stylist put product in my hair? On the top, scalp, root, or ends? I think this mousse, spray, or gel was…well, I’ll just plop it in all over, and see what happens. Af-

ter all, my stylist said this product is the best for this style. So you put a handful of mousse or spray way too much gel in your hair, and it looks more like a before instead of an after. This is why we created The Zone Application Technique™. The Zone™ product placement system helps our clients understand that where you put your product on the hair strands is vital to create the desired results in shampooing, conditioning, styling, and finishing rituals. Below is The Zone™ Mantra, which reminds you where the product your stylist

recommended ought to be placed for you to have the most successful results during your styling rituals. It explains what and why the numbers are located on the back of all Izzazu Brand products and can help guide you with many other professional lines as well. In summary, our Zone™ Mantra describes the starting points of each product’s application during your daily routine. Understanding the techniques your stylist uses will save you time and money and keep you empowered as you begin your day or simply go from your office look to an evening look for a function. Zone™ Mantra Zone 1: Volume (mousses, volumizing sprays) and Shampooing Rituals Zone 2: Control Frizz and/or Create Strength (smoothing balms, creams) Zone 3: Movement (molding putties, hair sprays) and Conditioning Rituals

We believe after you master your hair strand zones and the best area to apply product, you will achieve your salon look at home and begin each day happier while looking and feeling even better! Your style is our passion, Emilio & Gino

SUMMER 2018: SIZZLING FASHION & BEAUTY Styled by Teri Lynn Woodruff, Creative Transformations • Photos by Ryan Smas, B Squared Photo As the sun gets hotter, so do the summer color palettes in fashion and cosmetics this season. Expect to see designs incorporating bursts of canary yellow, tomato red, light green, bright blue and pink. Head to toe monochromatic looks are back along with mixed prints and checks. An array of lightweight sheer silk and tulle fabrics are being used to create transparent runway looks. Do you covet handbags? Oversized bags, shoulder totes, crossbody bags, and even the micro-mini clutch are not going anywhere soon. The demand for quality at-home skincare regimes and beauty products continues to be a focus for many women. Another important factor for shoppers is the number of companies that are striving to use all-natural ingredients and are implementing cruelty-free procedures in their manufacturing processes. Bare Minerals, Smashbox, Stila, Tarte, Anastasia Beverly Hills, and Urban Decay are among the top picks and are lines that you can find at retail locations such as Ulta Beauty and Sephora. JEARLEAN TAYLOR CONTINUED FROM PAGE 16 them come true. While life will happen to all of us, we have the power inside to survive and beat any obstacles. Our challenges in life build, groom, and grow us to be conquerors. I am living my life on purpose with a purpose for a purpose. Be the best version of you. It is not optional. What you are uncomfortable with can be your blessing in disguise. My life has impacted people in ways I never imagined. My goal is to inspire, encourage, and motivate the masses. I lean on my faith and keep pressing forward. This “bag” lady is on fire! n MANIFESTING YOUR MISSION CONTINUED FROM PAGE 17 needed to be more than just a goal-setting book. We needed to really inspire people to get out of their own way. I love this quote by Melinda Gates: “What we don’t measure, we don’t work on.” It’s been important in my life to notice when something is not working and really pay attention to it instead of glossing over it. Whether it’s money, relationships, or anything else in your life, if you don’t measure where growth needs to happen, you won’t improve. This guidebook is a way to really dig into that and help your mindset grow. You can find this spiral guidebook on my website at Brianna-Brown.com/shop/ n EMILY LETRAN CONTINUED FROM PAGE 39 That ended up being part of what I love about the industry. Relationship-building is what I really love, even after 20 years in private practice.” Having a family brought another level of challenges to Letran’s career. “‘Balance’ isn’t a great word for it,” she laughed. “I built my practice and spent time with my kids. Sometimes it was more of one or the other. This is why I wanted to go into coaching, because I can help people prioritize time and implement whatever they want in their lives.” In 2015, Letran officially started coaching and speaking so she could have a bigger impact. “Dentistry is just local, but a

speaker/coach can help people all over the world. It lets me serve, share knowledge, create a legacy, and inspire people to action.” Letran’s focus for her talks is high performance. “I want to help people maximize their potential to be the best version of themselves. For that to happen, you need a heightened and sustained level of clarity, energy, productivity, courage, necessity, and influence.” She helps her clients streamline their businesses so they don’t have to be there all the time. With their free time, they can pursue their passions, like giving back to the community. Giving back is also important to Letran. “We started a foundation in 2015 to hold a free dentistry day. It started out as once a year but quickly went to once a month. We help veterans and disadvantaged families, and some local labs donate services.” Plans are in the works for a mobile dentistry unit as well, which would allow her to help in other areas. The mobile unit is pricy— roughly $350K—so Letran is reaching out for donations or grants. To donate to the project, visit SmileChampions.com. Today, Letran’s children are in high school, applying to college or professional schools, so her priority has shifted slightly more to building her coaching and speaking business and developing online courses and virtual coaching. “I’m lucky to have come so far, and I still have the drive to do more. I want to make sure I can focus on serving the communities I’m in through dentistry and through helping other entrepreneurs. I want everyone to reach that higher level in life and business.” Visit DrEmilyLetran.com for more information, or pick up her free ebook at ExceptionalLeverage.com/ebook. n SOUL ART CONTINUED FROM PAGE 46 as “What type of creative spirit are you?” which is available this summer. “The transformational process of birthing dreams into reality”—making her relationship with spirit real through image, costume, and global events—inspires Hollick. She also is inspired by cultures all over the world, especially tribal cultures like those in Africa or Canada. “I love to

study people who live close to the Earth and have rituals. These people practice devotion while being in life. They make their life their spiritual path, living in a deep way and being completely grounded and expansive.” Also, colors are really important to Hollick. They speak to her and act like guiding energies. A prolific artist, Hollick produces original art and limited edition prints that are only available when they launch. Her work is on display on her website (laurahollick. com) and on her Instagram (laurahollicksoulartstudio). Hollick is also considering turning her paintings into fabrics for a clothing line, a step that makes sense since she already designs the clothes for all her photo shoots. To learn more about Hollick and be the first to know when her new paintings are available, visit her website and sign up for her newsletter. And you don’t want to miss her amazing TEDx talk “You are the Art,” available on YouTube. n FACE2FACE HEALING CONTINUED FROM PAGE 72 in need in the Pittsburgh and surrounding area. Aside from the standard offerings of the program, Scuilli also acts as an advocate for individuals with disfigurement, and she tries to collaborate with other people and organizations like the American Cancer Society or the Cancer Caring Center to help the patients. Scuilli started Face2Face Healing in July 2014 and was awarded 501 (c)(3) status in July 2015, and she has enjoyed the personal growth that comes from running a nonprofit. But she also says that she couldn’t have helped so many people without the support of her fantastic board of directors. “They give their time to volunteer,” she said, “and they have helped our nonprofit, as well as me, grow so much. I couldn’t do what I’m doing without their help.” Scuilli’s work is being recognized now in a big way. In April, she was honored with a 2017–2018 Jefferson Award for her volunteer work with Face2Face Healing. Then, in May, she was also selected as the recipient of the Jefferson Awards’ National

You have to show where you fit among the genres without boxing yourself in.” For example, Elle’s background is gospel, but she listened to a lot of pop music in the 80s and 90s and then learned opera and jazz at college while pursuing her music degree—which she accomplished with a double major in mathematics. “I just want the opportunity to tell my story in song and let people see all the influences that have touched my life. I want to put Lydia Elle’s stamp on the current industry.” What kept Elle going through her struggles and on her current path is her daughter. “I tell London every day that she is to become all that she was created to be.

But the only way I can show her how to do that is if I commit to that process for myself.” Now eight years old, London is very supportive of her mother’s book, as well as her singing career. “Sometimes I’ll be talking to someone, and she’ll say, ‘Mommy, you should give him a book.’ She’s as vested in my dreams as I am.” When she saw the video of her mother performing at the Global Gala—which she was able to watch on her grandmother’s Facebook—London commented on the video, “Hi Mom, I like your video, and I wish I was there with you. Have fun as you sing to others. Love you, London.” “I love having her support. London has her own ideas about what she wants to do and be, and because I’m doing this in such a fearless way, she is empowered to do the same with her life.” She didn’t always recognize the power of her own gift, and she wants to make sure that London knows she is meant to shine. In her book And So I Prayed…, Elle talks about overcoming the obstacles in her own life. “Many women are going through what I am. My life’s mission is sharing the lessons of my journey to help you with yours. I want to show people that your struggles unearth your strengths.” SUMMER 2018

And her foray into her music career is making a sweet ballad that we all can learn from. “I want women to know that they should never feel like it’s too late. Be open to your path not being straight.” In many industries, but especially in entertainment, we feel pressure to do it now. Success has to come this year. “But you gain so much in the process of becoming, so when your appointed time comes, you can sustain it externally and internally. Even the best fruit picked out of season will make you sick. You want to be ripe, and you want the environment to be ready. When those conditions combine, it’s your time to shine.” What makes Elle’s sound and message so appealing is the emotion behind it. When you hear her, you know that she has, as she said, “picked myself up from rock bottom and used every stone thrown my way to build my castle.” To view her performance at the Global Gala, visit her YouTube page “i am Lydia Elle.” For information about her book, coaching, and speaking engagements, visit lydiaelle.com.
